7- EL TOQUE

There is always a good atmosphere at El Toque, with a charming and friendly staff. Some of the dishes have an oriental touch and are delicious. It would be something like a fusion of modern cuisine with Asian influences. The veal steak is highly recommended, but if you want to try the jewel in the crown, don’t leave without ordering the mini hamburgers.

For less than 3 euros you can choose from a good variety of tapas. If you can, go early and hungry. It is not uncommon to see queues of people waiting for a table to become free. The terrace is very pleasant, although if you prefer there is also room inside. On the downside, it is not particularly close to the center. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a short walk.

Visit Estepona Orchid House 

El Orquidario, the Orchid House in Estepona, is a striking presence in the middle of Estapona’s historical center along the Calle Terraza and one of the best things to do in Estepona (one of the BEST cities in Southern Spain to visit).

The building itself is a surprising piece of modern architecture surrounded by the town’s typical apartment blocks, making for an interesting juxtaposition between old and new.

Curvaceous and sporting a glass ceiling made up of three domes – the highest reaching 30m high, the lowest 6m – it is home to a 17m high waterfall, 5000 plants and 1.300 species of orchids from all over the world. There’s also a vertical garden!

Entrance is free for children up to 4 years old, €1 for children from 4-11 years old and €3 for adults. Be sure to follow El Orquidario on Facebook to stay up to date on any events such as concerts or exhibitions that might be taking place there.

Marvel at Torre del Reloj

This clock tower is the only surviving part of the former Los Remedios church, originally built in 1473 and destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.

A neo-classic dome was added to the clock tower in the 18th century and now looks over the Plaza del Reloj , which is one of those idyllic little places you stumble upon on a leisurely evening walk.

Visit Dolmenes de Coromínas (Archaeological Museum)

This underground museum chamber situated in Los Pedegrales is home to five original dolmen stones.

To this day, no one is completely certain why they were built or what purpose they served, though most archeologists believe they were funeral structures, i.e. tombs of some sort.

The Dolmenes de Coromínas is a great museum for children, as the wonderful setting of the Pedregales Park will invite you to linger. Admission is 4 euros for children and adults.

How to get there: By car, follow the Avenida Andalucia up towards the Poligono Industrial , if you’re coming through the city, or take the motorway in the direction of Algeciras (not to the toll road!).

Both roads will lead you to a big roundabout next to the Poligono Industrial ; from there, follow the signs to Los Pedregales. For bus tours, visit the local tourist center for offers.

Follow the Avenida de Andalusia in the direction of Genalguacil (MA 557). Turn left at the Peñas Blancas sign about half an hour outside of Estepona, then left at the sign for Lose Reales . 

Have fun in a water park near Estepona

If you’re looking for something a little more exciting than the beach and want to enter the cool waters in an exhilarating fashion, head to Aquamijas water park in Mijas.

Just an hour’s drive from Estepona in the direction Malaga, Aquamijas offers a full-day’s worth of sliding and splashing fun for the whole family. Get your tickets online for great discounts!

How to get there: By car, follow the AP-7 and A-7 in direction Malaga; take the exit Fuengirola/Coín/Cambio de Sentido, then follow the Calle Virgen de Fátima to the Mijas Water Park. 

Go Karting in Estepona

If your feet are starting to tire from walking along the Estepona seafront promenade, why not burn some rubber participating in adventure activities instead?

Head to Kart & Fun close to the Feria grounds and decide who’s going to get the next round of drinks based on who wins the race.

With a track of more than 1160 meters, you’ll be sure to get your adrenaline pumping go-karting in Estepona. 

How to get there:

By car, follow the Avenida Juan Carlos in the direction highway, then head off straight from the roundabout, past the gas station; follow the signs to Kart & Fun. By bus, take the L1 to Parque Calvario and walk from there following the signs to Recinto Ferial.

It’s one of the best outdoor activities in Estepona.

Do a day trip to Gibraltar

If you want to hear a wild mix of Spanglish , meet cheeky monkeys and wind down the day with a traditional English pub dinner, then head to Gibraltar for the day.

A trip to Gibraltar is one of the best things to do near Estepona and should be a must-do on your 1 week Andalusia itinerary .

Park your car in La Linea and walk into Gibraltar to save time on traffic jams and parking – both of which can be a nightmare around here.

Do a day trip to Nerja and Frigiliana

For picturesque beaches and a laid-back holiday vibe, head to Nerja and Frigiliana, two lovely little beach towns near one another.

Go on a Day Trip to Marbella

Dinner: Have a sardine espeto at the beach, Estepona

The Chiringuito El Madero on the Playa la Rada is famous for its sardine espetos .

Grilled on a skewer above a typical fisher’s boat right outside the restaurant, you can watch as this delicious, Andalusian fish specialty is prepared for you.

How to get to Estepona

By flight: The nearest airport to Estepona is Malaga airport. From here you’ll have direct bus transfers when traveling from Malaga to Estepona. – Book airport transfers here

By Bus: From Malaga airport, take the L79 to Estepona; it goes every two hours and up to seven times a day during the summer; it takes around 1hr and 50 mins, at €11,10 a ticket. – Buy tickets upfront here

By train: There are no train lines to Estepona; the nearest train station is in Fuengirola, about 20mins from Malaga’s Plaza Mayor , 40mins from Estepona. – Book tickets here

How to get from Malaga to Estepona:

The best way to get from Malaga to Estepona is either by bus – see options above – or by car. By car, follow the AP-7 from Malaga and take exit 155 after about 50mins.

For better roads and less traffic, you can opt to take the tollway; prices range between €3,50 and €5,50 depending on the season.

How to get from Seville to Estepona:

By car, follow the E-15/AP-7 direction Sevilla for duration of 2hrs and 40mins; take the A-381 and E-5/AP-4 to Avenida de las Razas , then exit from E-5/A-4 to Sevilla; continue along the Paseo de las Delicias and Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo to reach the centre.

Alternatively, take the AVE City train from Malaga to Sevilla; the trip is around 2hrs, starting €24,65 depending on the season. – Book train tickets here

How to Get from Malaga to Estepona

By Car: Get on E-15/A-7/AP-7 from Av. Mercado and C/ José Luis Morales Marín for 6 minutes. Then follow the  E-15/AP-7 to Av. Juan Carlos I for 18 minutes. Take exit 1070 A from E-15/AP-7. Finally, Follow Av. Juan Carlos I to C. Sierra Cazorla in Estepona for 4 minutes. Get your hire car here.

Alternatively, a bus runs from La Carolina , Marbella to Estepona with a duration of 51 minutes. Buy tickets upfront here

How to get from Cadiz to Estepona

Follow the scenic route along the E-15/AP-7 from Estepona’s Avenida Juan Carlos I, then follow the A-7 and A-381 direction Cadiz.

After about an hour, take exit 24 from A-281. Then follow A-389 and A-2003 to the city center. 

How to Get from Madrid to Estepona

The fastest way to get from Madrid to Estepona is to fly to Malaga and book an airport transfer from Malaga to Estepona. View flights here.

It takes a similar amount of time to get the train from Madrid to Malaga (2 hours, 26 minutes) and then catch the L-526 bus to Estepona. Get your bus tickets here and search for trains here .

Where is Estepona?

So, where is Estepona, you ask? Conveniently located between Marbella – home to the rich and the famous – and Casares , one of the beautiful white villages in Spain, where wine is sold on many a local’s doorsteps.

Getting Around Estepona

Estepona is a relatively big town but if you’re just going to be exploring the center, then walking or biking is the best option – this will give you time to take it all in.

If you’re looking to head further out, towards the port, the mountains, or the Selwo Aventura area, you can do so by bus or car. A taxi to Sonora Beach in Selwo will cost you around €18.

Hello there!

I have never used any myself, so cannot give any comments based on experience, but I believe that last year there were two.

Tapas Tour Louisa, and Tourvenir.

Perhaps someone else can give information, or even our friend Google!

On New Life in the Sun on Channel 4 there was a lady who moved to Estepona and renovated a lovely house and she was running tapas tours that looked good, I think she is the lady mentioned in Turista's post above.

I messaged Louisa at Tourvenir asking about the tapas tours & cookery lesson as there is nothing on the

Tourvenir website. Unfortunately she said she was now living back in the UK.

Such I shame as we were planning to do it when we go next month.

Can anyone else help regarding Tapas tour?.

I'm on a ferry about to tackle the Bay of Biscay and then drive to Estepona.

But by the weekend I can suggest some places you could go to, a DIY tapas tour for you.

Ah, just realised I'm too late, this is a thread that has been resurrected after your dates.

I think you are fine as far as #4 goes Tourista.

It’s a shame that Louisa at Tourvenir didn’t put something on the website to let people know they were wasting their time reading it and sending messages and emails without a reply. As it happens we quite easily made up our own tapas tour to a few places while we were there.

We are due to go in June so would welcome your tapas tour suggestions Turista 😄 it’s a shame Louisa is no longer doing the tours as it would have been nice to do the tour with others. You never know maybe someone else will start one up 🤞

El tipico Andaluz but be careful how much you order and go inside and look at all the different hams.

What’s it like living in Estepona?

Louisa travelled the world and considered many options before choosing the town of Estepona – on Spain’s Costa del Sol – to be her future home.

In this interview Louisa tells us all about Estepona, why she chose it as a base, and everything good (and not so good) about living in Spain.

Hi Louisa! Thank you very much for doing this interview. How did you end up in Spain Louisa?

For many years I travelled with world with my work, spending quite long periods of time in other countries. I was an independent organisational change consultant for global organisations, such as Nestle. A few years ago, my elderly mother became infirm. I wanted to spend more time with her (she was my only close family), so I decided to open a B&B and holiday flats in Brighton.

For years, every time I returned to the UK, I liked it less and less. I no longer identified with the culture and felt like I did not belong there. When mum died, I had nothing to keep me in the UK. It was a matter of where I would relocate to, as I had wanted to leave for years.

I considered a lot of countries including Germany, Canada, France, Portugal, Bulgaria and Greece. Top of my list was Germany, as I had spent a lot of time there and had an active social network. I rejected it in the end as the area I knew well had changed a lot after Merkel came to power. I had sufficient points to move to Canada without a job but decided against it due to the weather. I really love Antibes in France, but property there was extremely expensive and although my French is fair, the time I spent working there led me to believe that would be hard to become part of the local community. Portugal didn’t feel right. Bulgaria looked good initially, but the language and culture were just too different. I rejected Greece, as I was not interested in the mainland and the islands were often deserted in off season with no flights.

Although I had been to Spain many times, I did not seriously consider it initially. This was because many of the places I had visited were too commercial. I had been to Marbella many times but, did not want to live in a city with all of the associated social issues. I had loved living in Brighton, but after a while hordes of homeless people, overflowing bins and anti-social behaviour on the streets starts to grate.

Private health insurance in Spain

You’ll need Spanish private health insurance to apply for all Spanish visas. We recommend Innoinsure . Their insurance policies are comprehensive and meet all Spanish Visa requirements. And you can buy your policy online using foreign credit/debit cards.

Why did you end up choosing Estepona as your base? And what’s it like? (what kind of town is it, what’s the demographic, etc)

I looked online and thought Estepona worth a look. I found a buying agent (they work for free and remove all the hassle), and he made me 15 viewing appointments in one day. Between viewing 5 and 6 I saw what was to become my house in the distance and said to the estate agent who with us ‘If that was for sale, I would buy it’ she replied ‘It is the house of a friend of mine, I have a key. Would you like to look?’ I stepped through the door and it felt like home. I did not commit to buying at the point. This happened when I went shopping for milk. I was staying in an apartment in the old town and could not find a shop that sold milk. In the end I did something I never do when abroad, which is go into an Irish bar. I was desperate for a cuppa, so in I went to ask where I could buy some milk. My decision was made when the girl behand the bar said ‘Que?’. She did not speak any English and at that point I knew that I had found the real Spain.

Estepona is a small town, originally a fishing village, that has had a lot of investment over the past few year. Although there are pockets of expats, the old town where I live has predominantly Spanish residents.

You mentioned something about “pitfalls” or hardships when you came to Spain. Can you elaborate?

The pitfalls are not knowing what questions to ask, which meant quite a few surprises. For example, I was not prepared for the previous owners of my house to expect to stay on after completion to remove their furniture! It is not knowing what’s ‘normal’.

Things like getting utilities transferred or connected can be a real challenge. I waited weeks for the internet to be installed only to be told a neighbour refused to have another cable across the front of their house.

What (if anything) do you feel you most had to adjust to when coming to live in Spain?

Mainly the level of administration and paperwork required to do anything official. Even though I hired a lawyer and a gestor, processes are often slow, complicated and frustrating if you are used to streamlined systems.

It can be challenging adapting things like eating and socialising times. Here people breakfast at around 11, lunch 3-4 and start dinner at 9.30 to 10.

One of the most positive things no one told me about is just how lovely, welcoming and helpful the Spanish people are. I had Spanish friends in the UK, but en mass, the Spanish are mainly wonderful – like everywhere there is always an exception to the rule!

What’s your daily life like in Estepona? How do you keep yourself busy?

I have just started renovating my house Casa Florestos , which is being turned into 3 apartments, ultimately for tourist lettings. I plan to open the house to the public for a local charity on a couple of weekends this year when the house is finished. It is probably the most photographed house in Estepona and so many people are interested in looking inside.

Soon I am launching a walking tours business in Estepona old town, called Touvenir . All the walking tours involve food, drink and a souvenir. I am working with a local person, who has lived in Estepona for many years.

How is your Spanish? Did you learn Spanish before coming to Spain?

I have met many people who have been here for decades and still do not speak Spanish. I am not a natural linguist, but am learning as I think it is vital to have a good command of the language of the country you live in.

How do you feel about the locals? Has living in Spain been a favourable experience? Do you have any tips (do’s and don’ts) for foreigners looking to settle here?

For me, moving to Spain is the best thing I ever did. I love Spain and the Spanish culture.

Learn Spanish. Don’t shout at people in English or lose your temper if people do not understand you. I see this all the time and these people often have the cheek to complain that Spanish do not speak English. This is Spain and the national language is Spanish.

Don’t complain about how different it is in Spain to home. All things, people and places are different. Get over it or go home.

Getting work is hard and most work is poorly paid. Be realistic. Have no expectations and you will not be disappointed.

If you start a business, find out the rules and make sure you adhere to them. I know people who let holiday accommodation illegally and when they get found out, they will get a huge fine. Breaking the rules is stupid and risky as a foreigner .

All the provinces and cities have their distinct culture and language. What stands out for you in Estepona?

The friendliness and helpfulness of the people here. Just wonderful!

Cost of living. Do you own a home or do you rent? Would you mind disclosing how much you pay in rent and how much your utilities come to on a monthly basis?

When I bought my house, the existing utilities provider charged extortionate prices. It was a bit of a fight to switch, but I did and saved a lot of money. I do not think my bills are relevant as my house is big and I live alone, so most of it is unoccupied right now. In general, I find Spain cheaper than Brighton where I last lived in the UK, but Brighton is not a cheap place to live. People who complain about the cost of living here, have often been in Spain for a while. Comparing costs in Spain now with what things used to cost years ago in the UK is like comparing apples with oranges. When I first arrived, I noticed that some things were very expensive in Spain, like wood, garden furniture and linen. Other things like tapas and a glass of wine are cheaper. On balance I find it cheaper to live, but maybe this is because I like wine and tapas and rarely buy the other things!

Do you have a car or do you take public transport?

I use taxis, as I live in a pedestrian area. Everything I need is in walking distance and I have a bicycle for longer distances.

What’s your favourite local dish?

Grilled sardines fresh off the boat in Estepona port.

Do you have any regrets at all? Would you do it all over if you had to do it again? Would you have changed anything?

No, I regret nothing and would make the same decision again.

How romantic that your parents honeymooned in Estepona! It is such a beautiful place and it just keeps getting better. The new Paseo Maritimo is a delight and there is huge investment flowing into the town. I hope to open the accommodation in September 2021 and would like to meet you in person.

Longer term lets up to 3 months are rare in summer outside Airbnb. Nothing much is available for 3 months plus before September. You can try Becky in a couple of months. 0034677139021.

I guess you will eventually be living in Gib anyway, unless you have a Spanish visa. Accommodation prices there are high, from around £1000pm for a small studio flat.

I love this post! As a Canadian looking to get a vacation property in Spain (not to live full time) I am in LOVE with Estepona. My parents honeymooned there in 1976 and my husband and I did in 2014 and came back in 2016 and 2018 … only to miss our planned 2020 0r 2021 trip due to Covid. We will be back! I’ll look to see if you are taking bookings for your suites by then.

Estepona Tapas Tour

Great night out with Natasha. She was very knowledgeable of the area and blended in lovely with our family of 6. Was really accommodating with our various dietary requirements and allergies (nut allergies and vegetarians). Natasha helped us explore different tapas and we found some new favourites.

Had a fabulous day learning to cook an authentic Spanish paella, in an amazing and truly unique setting. We also we made Salnorejo - a popular traditional cold tomato soup that was absolutely divine, and for dessert we made crème caramel - all thoroughly delicious, and washed down afterwards on a gorgeous roof top terrace, with as much Cava as we wanted. Our family has used Tourvenir twice. The free morning walk, where we were introduced to restaurants - this was a nice tranquil tour where we heard a bit about various restaurants in the centre of Estepona. The second event was a home cooking class with tapas. Louisa and Elvira - we enjoyed it a lot and we have already done several of dishes again. It was a nice atmosphere and all of us including two teenage boys had a great time. It has been easy to communicate with Louisa in regard to planing and organising and the price level is fair. My daughter (18yrs) and I had a brilliant time at the Tapas Cookery Class and Lunch. Louisa was super friendly and Elivira was a superb knowledgeable teacher, great recipes and ingredients. It was a great class. Got to watch, learn and taste the recipes and then had our own private kitchen to do the recipes hands on ourselves. Enjoyed comparing flavors with our friends ( the other team) at the end while enjoying drinks and great conversation with Louisa.
