Top 10 active ATP Tour players with 500 career wins: Who joins the Big Four on the list?

Rafael Nadal after winning US Open

  • October 18, 2019

We know the Big Four of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are on the list of active players with more than 500 career wins, but who else features?

Marin Cilic became the 10th active player to reach that milestone this week, but we bet it will take you a while to get the names of the other few of the players on the list.

Here you go…

10. Marin Cilic – 500 career match wins The Croatian is latest member to join the 500 club as his victory over Ivo Karlovic at the Kremlin Cup was his 500th win on the ATP Tour.

A smiling Marin Cilic

“It would definitely mean that I’ve had an amazing career. I’ve been on the Tour for many years and, more or less, every season has been quite consistent from me,” he said. “I’ve played a lot of matches and there’s always an opportunity to learn from every match. That’s the nice part of tennis.

“I’m aware of [the milestones] when I achieve them and it’s a huge satisfaction that the work is showing itself in the results. Overall, my goal is to be the best I can be.”

9. Stan Wawrinka – 510 career match wins Stan The Man reached his 500th career win at Roland Garros earlier this year and has notched up a few more wins since then.

The 34-year-old turned pro in 2002 and he reached a high of No 3 in the world, but has struggled with injury during latter stages of his career.

Of course, he is a three-time Grand Slam winner having won the Australian Open (2014), French Open (2015) and US Open (2016).

8. Tommy Robredo – 533 career match wins The Spaniard started playing professional tennis way back in 1998 and he is still going strong at the age of 37.

Robredo became the fifth Spaniard overall after Rafael Nadal, Manuel Orantes, David Ferrer and Carlos Moya to join the elite club when he notched up the 500-win milestone back in October 2014.

He has won 12 ATP Tour titles and reached No 5 in the world rankings back in August 2006, but wins are hard to come by these days as he is yet to register a victory on the ATP Tour in 2019.

7. Richard Gasquet – 537 career match wins The man with the one-handed backhand was tipped for big things early in his career, but he sadly never reached the heights everyone expected him to reach.

Richard Gasquet celebrates

“I’m happy I did it in Monte-Carlo 16 years after my first victory,” the Frenchman, who turned pro 2002, said when he achieved the milestone. “There are very few players who have achieved this… I certainly am among the worst of players [to achieve it].”

6. Fernando Verdasco – 544 career match wins Interesting fact, Verdasco joined the elite 500 club after Gasquet and Robredo, but he is now ahead of them in terms of wins.

The Spaniard, who has been playing on the ATP Tour since 2001, notched up win No 500 at the Madrid Open in May last year.

The 35-year-old has seven titles to his name with a career-high ranking of No 7.

5. Tomas Berdych – 640 Former Wimbledon finalist Berdych was considered as the best of the rest for a long period as he often came up short in Grand Slams due to the likes of Messrs Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.

The Czech, who turned pro in 2002, reached the milestone in February 2015 and declared: “It feels great. I need to make sure I keep my body fresh so I can make another 500.”

But sadly he has struggled with injury in recent years so another 500 wins seems to be out of reach.

4. Andy Murray – 669 career match wins Former world No 1 Murray also notched up his 500th career match win in 2015 as he became the first British player to do so and was the 46th player overall at the time.

Andy Murray pointing

“There’s different ways of judging the success of someone’s career, but winning 800-900 matches is something that’s happened very rarely and a difficult thing to do – so it gives you something to aim at,” he said.

Eight hundred match wins are a long way away now as he has been hampered by injury in recent years, but he seems to be hitting his straps again following a successful hip operation at the start of 2019.

3. Novak Djokovic – 884 career match wins The reigning world No 1 turned pro in 2003 and 10 years later he became the 40th Open Era player to pick up 500 career wins.

He achieved the feat during the third round at Roland Garros in 2013 and at the time he was a six-time Grand Slam winner with his best yet to come.

Since then he has notched up another 384 match wins and added another 10 Grand Slams to his tally. Pretty impressive stuff.

2. Rafael Nadal – 967 career match wins The Spaniard no doubt has his eyes set on the 1,000 career match wins milestones and he is likely to reach it during the early stages of the 2020 season.

It took him 605 matches to win 500 matches with the important victory coming at the Barcelona Open in 2011.

At the age of 24, he was the second-youngest player to reach 500 career wins with Bjorn Borg top of the list as he was 23 when he achieved the record.

“This is the consequence of years of hard work,” he said. “The only negative thing is that I have already been on the circuit nine years.”

Roger Federer applauding

The Swiss got to No 500 back at the 2007 Monte Carlo Masters and with the win he also went past the $30m mark in career earnings.

“Two incredible numbers,” he said at the time.

In April 2007 Federer had 10 Grand Slam titles and just over $30m in prize money to his name, fast forward to October 2019 and he has 20 majors and have earned more than $126m in prize money.

Venus Williams loses at Indian Wells in her first match since the US Open. Naomi Osaka advances

I NDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Venus Williams played a match on tour for the first time in about six months on Thursday, and the 43-year-old owner of seven Grand Slam titles gave away the lead and the last 10 games in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 loss to qualifier Nao Hibino at the BNP Paribas Open .

Williams hadn't competed anywhere since a first-round exit at the U.S. Open on Aug. 29. That 6-1, 6-1 defeat against Greet Minnen was the American's most lopsided loss in 100 career matches at the major tournament she won in 2000 and 2001.

When Thursday's defeat ended with Williams getting broken for the seventh time in 12 service games, she walked to the net to congratulate Hibino, then left the court with a smile and a wave as much of the sparse crowd stood to applaud.

Williams, once ranked No. 1 and now outside the top 450, won her most recent Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2008 and has played sparingly in recent years, in part because of injuries. Her most recent appearance at Indian Wells came in 2019.

She still can offer stinging serves and big backhands, but her performance this time was filled with mistakes, including 10 double-faults.

The match was interrupted by heavy rain after they completed just two games in windy and chilly conditions Wednesday night. When play resumed about 14 hours after the suspension, the sun was out, the temperature rose above 70 degrees (20 Celsius) and Williams no longer needed the long-sleeved white top and black leggings she used the night before.

The 80th-ranked Hibino, who came into this match with an 0-3 career record at Indian Wells, will meet No. 17 seed Veronika Kudermetova in the second round.

On Day 2 in the desert, with a packed scheduled because of the previous night's weather, winners included four-time Grand Slam title winner Naomi Osaka, 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu, 2018 Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki and 2022 Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins. Next for Collins is a matchup with No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who edged her in three sets at the Australian Open in January, while Osaka's 6-3, 6-1 victory over qualifier Sara Errani allowed her to move on to face No. 14 Liudmila Samsononva.

Among the men, three-time major champ Stan Wawrinka was edged 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2 by 63rd-ranked Tomas Machac, and Gael Monfils, qualifier Lucas Pouille, Borna Coric and 19-year-old American Alex Michelsen won.

There was rain at night again, halting play for about 2 1/2 hours, before resuming a little past 9:30 p.m. local time.

Rafael Nadal was supposed to play in his first tour match since January on Thursday night, but he withdrew from the tournament on Wednesday.
