Janet Jackson's 3-night concert run signals more big shows for the renovated Blaisdell Arena

H ONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The last time Janet Jackson was in Honolulu for a concert was in November 2019. Since then, the city has done $9 million in improvements to the Blaisdell Center Arena, where opened a three-night concert run Friday.

“She’s phenomenal,” said Jackson fan Eugene Davis as he waited to get in. “I expect nothing else but her being absolutely phenomenal.”

“This is my first time! I’m excited,” said one woman in a group of five friends who traveled to Honolulu from all over the continental U.S. for the concert.

Jackson’s “Together Again” concerts are the biggest concert events in the arena since the city completed the renovations last November. The facility has new lighting and electrical systems, redone railings and restrooms, and more backstage.

“Everything was new flooring, new walls, new paint and everything,” said city Enterprise Services Director Dita Holifield. “That was important, so that when the Janet Jacksons of the world come, they are taken care of at the level that they’re used to.”

“They did a beautiful job backstage and it’s super special,” said promoter Rick Bartalini of Rick Bartalini Presents, which is putting on the Jackson concerts. “It’s easier for us to take good care of them and make them feel welcomed and that’s really important to me, and has been throughout my whole 20-year career doing concerts.”

The renovations were a much cheaper options for the city than the nearly $800 million ground-up redevelopment that was canceled in 2020. Despite much anticipation for the world-class venue, then-mayor Kirk Caldwell said the city could barely afford the rail line, and couldn’t afford such an ambitious entertainment project.

Those who live in nearby high-rise condos are fine without it.

“We just got a bite to eat across the street at the Symphony, and now we’re getting excited to get into the show,” said Dan Viola, a live DJ who flew in from Maui for the concert.

“Here specifically on the campus, with the condos, there’s no doubt that the Kakaako residents and that the Kapiolani-Ward residents, and then of course the eateries and the businesses are all booming because of all the people coming in for our events,” Holifield said.

And the Blaisdell renovations are still underway. The city is spending $34 million dollars more on the concert hall, which has been home to the Hawaii Symphony, ballet performances and Broadway musicals. It’s now closed for upgrades and will reopen in February of next year.

Promoters are already anxious for the next A-list act, a country music star that’s a secret until next week.

“We have a big show announcement on Tuesday at 6 a.m. for an artist that’s been around for 20 years that’s never ever played in Hawaii,” Bartalini said. And he added that the concert will be at the Blaisdell Arena.

Janet Jackson opened the first of three nights of concerts Friday at the renovated Blaisdell Center Arena.

Live In Concert In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour

Product Description

Live from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, superstar Janet Jackson performs an electrifying concert featuring songs from her latest multi-platinum album, "All for You," plus many other hits from her distinguished career. HBO original airing was a ratings smash - watched by over 12 million households!

With unflagging energy--and the help of prerecorded backing tapes--Janet sates her audience with her impressive array of hits, from "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "Nasty" to "Trust a Try" and "Together Again." There's no doubt Janet's performing instincts have been co-opted by a generation of up-and-comers, but Live in Hawaii shows Janet's not about to abdicate her throne. --Kevin Filipski
