*UPDATE: The El Galeon & Nao Victoria are currently sailing outside of Florida, and will return to St. Augustine in September 2015

For centuries 'ghost ship' folklore has haunted those who dare to make a living from the sea. The fear of phantom ships was a very real part of maritime heritage, and to this day persists in the culture of modern sailors. Pirates, bloody mutinies, deathly plagues, and other unexplained occurrences have shaped the very fabric of nautical history. As St. Augustine's ORIGINAL and most historically authentic Ghost Tour company, we're proud to be the exclusive local tour operator to have been granted special access from Spain to bring our tour guests on this unforgettable night-time ghost tour. Explore this important genre of St. Augustine's history on board these enchanting ships with us...

Tour information:

Many Spanish expeditions were sent to survey the American coasts in the 16th century. These explorations were soon followed by numerous expeditions for trade and for populating the newly discovered areas. More and more supplies and equipment were delivered to the New World. In time, the ships that were used for exploration were insufficient for the increasing volume of traffic between Spain and America, and it became necessary to design and build a new type of ship with more cargo capacity, defense capabilities and better maneuverability. It was during this period that Spanish galleons arose. It was the captains of the Spanish navy, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Álvaro de Bazán, who designed the definitive long and relatively narrow hulled galleon for Spain in the 1550s.

El Galeon Andalucía

El Galeon Andalucía, San Juan Puerto Rico

Currently docked in Old San Juan until January 31, 2016, El Galeon is open daily for tours. If you have the chance, take the time to check it out and step back 500 years and see what life was like sailing the seas in the 16th &17th century’s.

The ship is open to visitors daily from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm with five of the six decks available to tour.

El Galeon is 500 ton galleon that is about 160 feet long with a 32 feet beam. The ship has four masts that hold 6 sails for a total of 11,000 square feet. The ship can average speed around 7 and typically has a crew between 15 to 35 people.

Ignacio Fernandez Vial designed the replica for the Nao Victoria Foundation and it took 17 months to build and was launched in Spain in November 2009.

We visited the ship the other day and loved the experience. The weather was on the windy side so the ship was swaying a little, but that just added to the experience, though my wife was not too thrilled about the movement…

El Galeon Andalucía, San Juan Puerto Rico

The ship is filled with history and being able to stand on the deck and wander around this tall ship really gives you a perspective on how life would have been back in the day. The attention to detail is evident in every part of the ship, from the Captains Wheel to the numerous cannons that protected the ship from pirates and enemies.

You can roam around the ship and take as long or as short as you want, with most areas open to the public. The only negative I will say is that the area on the top deck with the Captains Wheel was roped off and you had to pay an extra $5 if you wanted a photo at the wheel. That dissapointed me.

El Galeon Andalucía, San Juan Puerto Rico

Having said that, there is plenty to see on the ship and it’s not everyday that you have chance to stand atop of a tall ship and imagine sailing the seas.

Residents tour El Galeon, appreciate Spanish culture

The el galeon, a colonial-era spanish galleon replica, provides residents tours to teach more about pensacola's ties to spain and the spanish culture..

Fighting 40-knot winds and 10-plus-foot waves on its way to Pensacola from Fort Lauderdale, El Galeon finally docked at Plaza de Luna and opened its hatches to locals Sunday for tours throughout the vessel.

The Colonial-era two-masted Spanish tall ship replica is similar to the one that Tristan de Luna, governor of Florida in the 16th Century, sailed when he arrived in 1559 to what would later be named Pensacola Bay.

"The visit of El Galeon is extremely helpful in order to understand our history," said Maria Davis, Honorary Vice Consul of Spain for Pensacola. "It is vitally important that every American understand and appreciate their history in order to know who they are and how they came to be. Our history, the good and the bad, binds us together into a great nation."

Davis, who organized El Galeon's visit, was also the key player in bringing the Spanish training ship Elcano to Pensacola in May. In addition to the community's Spanish ties, it's the culture that Davis has an interest in sharing.

"This is very important to Pensacola and to Spain," she said. "This ship shows a little bit of what Spain went through to come here in 1559."

Marlette: Big plans Bowden would be proud of

Capt. Manuel Murube, 45, said despite the difficult sailing conditions along the way, he and his 19-member crew are excited to be docked in Pensacola to show people the replica vessel and teach a bit of the galleon's history.

"It is a great pleasure to visit Pensacola," Murube said. "Sailing conditions in this kind of boat can be hard but we are happy to be here."

Touring the ship with her 6- and 8-year-old boys, Pensacola resident Jennifer McCarthy, 41, heard about the ship's arrival last week and was excited to show her children as a hands-on way to learn more about history, Spanish culture and Pensacola's Spanish ties. Being able to see the ropes and pulleys, and have them climb the stairs connecting the decks, she said it was informative for the children and the history sank in better because it wasn't on TV or in a book.

"It's good for children to have parents who take them to do stuff instead of watching TV all day," McCarthy said. "Plus, this is fun to bring that international flair and diversity to Pensacola."

Walking through the ship's decks, tour guide Jose Manuel Ambrosio, 29, explained that in the 16th century, galleon cargo ships were used to haul items back and forth between Spain and America. A full-scale reconstruction, El Galeon is 170 long and 125 feet tall with a 30-foot beam. And similar to its operation in the old days, the masts and anchors are still operated by ropes and pulleys.

Spanish ties reinforced with Elcano visit

Modern additions to the replica include a walk-through museum area with plaques and displays featuring the history of the ship and replica artifacts such as cannons and ammunition. There is also a TV area in the cargo hold where tourists can sit and watch a film of how the El Galeon was constructed and its 40,000-nautical mile history.

While many parents brought their children for tours, adults enjoyed the historical aspects of the ship as well.

Locals Oliver Quack, 48, and Carlos del Sol, 56, recently visited a Spanish exhibit in Sante Fe that included various Spanish artifacts and said the history there and here in Pensacola are similar, and that historical connection is one they've come to appreciate.

"We wanted to see this because this is the beginning of Pensacola and Florida in the United States," Quack said. "It's something fun to do... and how often do you get to see a 16th century galleon!"

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
