It was his birthday and his band played Happy Birthday To You for him after the first song, Belief!

After the intermission, he covered Tougher Than The Rest by Bruce Springsteen, saying that it was one of his favourite songs of all time.

It was a good setlist: he played some songs that he doesn't usually play, like Waitin' On The Day, Born And Raised or In Your Atmosphere.

Before playing Changing, he said that to finish the song he thought about Irish people in a pub singing it together, and that every time he sings it he thinks about Ireland.

He and all the band were really great.

WHAT A MAGICAL EVENING OF PURE MUSIC & ART!

The Viejas Arena at the SDSU campus is simply a fabuous venue- and on a perfect cool night in San Diego, the sold out show was an artistic masterpiece- the setlists were spot on. The artsy colorful 3D Backdrop, that I believe Mayer himself was a key designer in its creation, blended beautifully with the video montages displayed above it.

Speaking of the video special effects- subtle, colorful, real-time gems, shadow effects in a stacatto pattern of the guitar neck, I've never seen anything like it in 40 years of concert outings. The crowd was captivated- a long 30 minute intermission appeared relatively early in the show.

I've been going to John Mayer shows since 2002 and though I am obviously a biased super-fan, I can honestly state that this production is-- far and away-- much more amazing than what I saw at the Forum just two years ago.

JM is continuously expanding horizons, getting more creative-- and has the crowd in stitches laughing when he chats up his latest insights & specific San Diego references... I just wish I had the whole show on video so I could watch it again and catch every little thing I missed!

My Husband and I were blown away at the complete show. John is a master of master's at playing the guitar. I still can't get over how amazing it was to watch him get into playing and what we heard. It made so much of a great difference seeing him in person play. His band is extremely talented with the gifts they brought to the stage too. This year we've seen 4 concerts so far and John Mayer was the best! I hope he continues to perform for many years because we'll see him every time if he comes to Phoenix or Tucson (where we live). John spoke to the crowd and made us laugh during the show. They even dropped confetti on the main floor during their encore - it was so cool!! No other band this year we saw live did as much for the crowd entertainment as John Mayer.

John Mayer Extends First-Ever Solo Acoustic Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Earlier this month, John Mayer embarked on his first-ever solo acoustic tour. He’s a month into now and already craving more. On Monday, the singer announced a second North American leg adding 17 new dates to the initial 19.

“As a dear friend once told me, “never block a blessing.” Something very special is happening out here and I want to keep it going – It’s too good for my soul. Thank you for making it such an incredible run so far…,” Mayer wrote on social media.

The new dates pick up on Oct. 3 at Madison Square Garden and extend through Nov. 10 with a final show in Los Angeles. JP Saxe will join for support on the new stretch making stops in Boston, Tampa, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and more. Mayer also promises that European dates are on the way.

General sale for the new dates begins Friday, March 31 at 9 a.m. local time.

The solo tour marks the first time in Mayer’s 20-year career that he’s hit the road without accompaniment. Each gig will feature full acoustic sets from Mayer, as well as “special performances” on electric guitar and piano.

Jojo siwa promised them pop stardom. they say they were ‘thrown in the trash’, biden's meeting with muslim community leaders on gaza was disastrous, chappell roan lectured at harvard and kissed olivia rodrigo all in one day.

Solo Tour 2023. Just like the early days. I’ll be playing old songs. Newer songs. Songs you haven’t heard yet that I’ll be road testing – all on acoustic, electric, and piano. Hope to see you there… John pic.twitter.com/mjuIGvLvqQ — John Mayer (@JohnMayer) January 26, 2023

Gig review: John Mayer treats fans to hits and Taylor Swift tune at solo show in 3Arena, Dublin

Gig review: John Mayer treats fans to hits and Taylor Swift tune at solo show in 3Arena, Dublin

A recent picture of John Mayer on his solo tour which reached the 3Arena in Dublin, on Friday. Picture: Danny Clinch

John Mayer, 3Arena, Dublin

A couple of songs into John Mayer’s set on Friday night in the 3Arena, in a moment of rare, relative hush, someone shouts ‘Last Train Home’.

Mayer has just picked up the guitar for his next song but he pauses. “I like that request,” he says. “Can I have the 12 string?”.

It’s a sign of what’s to come for the night ahead. It’s the final night of the 46-year-old's solo acoustic tour, which he's brought across the US, Europe and Japan.

“I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone,” he wrote when announcing the shows on his Instagram. “A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I’d feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again."

John Mayer performs at the 3Arena in Dublin on Friday night

Indeed, in the intervening years, a lot has changed. The Connecticut-born musician started off in much the same way as Ed Sheeran. A man and his guitar, writing love songs. His first gig in Ireland was a solo affair in Whelan’s in 2003. It would be 16 years before he’d stop off here again, this time in 2019 with a full band and an entirely different sound.

Over the years, he’s moved away from acoustic, drifting into blues and rock, sharing a stage with accomplished musicians like Eric Clapton and BB King, swapping his baggy jeans for suits and leather. At the height of his fame, he picked up Grammys for his best-known release, Continuum , and was romantically linked to everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Katy Perry and Taylor Swift (the latter was just 19 when she met the then 32-year-old, and had some choice words to say about him on the near seven-minute 'Dear John').

So, a lot has changed. But tonight, in a pair of chinos and denim shirt, he seems entirely at ease alone on stage interacting with a fully sold-out 13,000-capacity amphitheatre, playing a mix of hits, fan favourites and deep cuts from his eight studio albums.

He plays older favourites like 'In Repair' and 'Neon', having fun with a near two-minute riff on the latter that proves to be a highlight of the night. Someone requests 'Vultures,' a song usually played on an electric guitar that shines with a full band. But Mayer gives it a go on the acoustic he currently has in his hand, forgetting the words at one point and inviting the crowd to sing.

Another request comes from the front row with a very big sign they have been throwing up all night. It's for 'Paper Doll', a song rumoured to be a response to Taylor Swift's 'Dear John' ballad, and one he rarely plays live.

"Sometimes I ignore requests I really don't want to play," he says, "But I have to appreciate the sign." He gives us one verse and a chorus before moving on, seeming the most uncomfortable he's been all night as he sings, "Was it just too far to fall / for a little paper doll?".

Throughout the night, he moves seamlessly from one instrument to the next, picking up an electric banjo, a double-neck guitar, a harmonica. At one stage he sits at the grand piano switching from its keys to an electric guitar to deliver 'Changing.'

Despite the randomness of the setlist, the crowd knows almost every word, and we sing along in earnest, the night culminating in Mayer delivering a cover of Tom Petty's 'Free Fallin', and the crowd, a standing ovation.

"Dublin, thank you," he smiles. "I love you so much. Be well. Take care of yourselves. I'll see you soon."

His next shows are at the Sphere in Las Vegas, where he’ll play four nights with Dead & Company, moving in after U2 wrap up their residency. For fans lucky enough to secure a ticket to Friday night's show, it felt like a rare intimate gig with Mayer before he returns to much bigger things.
