Yesterday was a momentous occasion at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.   Researchers from the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) and Disney Conservation released two sea turtles as part of the 16th annual Tour de Turtles migration. This education event is a highlight of the Vero Beach Resort calendar and gives guests a chance to see turtle migration from sea turtles, nesting beaches, and feeding grounds.

The two turtles released yesterday were named Madame Leota and Harriet drawing inspiration from the live-action film Haunted Mansion which made its debut in theaters this weekend.  Each year the Tour de Turtles brings together the STC and Disney Conservation who use satellite telemetry to track two female turtles and keep tabs on how they swim during migration. The turtle that swims the furthest wins the Tour de Turtles race.

“Disney’s commitment to sea turtle conservation in Vero Beach spans 20 years, and we are very proud to have recently watched our 1.5 millionth sea turtle hatchling leave the nest and shuffle its way to the ocean,” said Mark Penning, Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. “Southeast Florida hosts one of the largest nesting aggregations of loggerhead sea turtles, making up to 40 percent of the global loggerhead population. The team has recorded more than 20,000 sea turtle nests on our survey route since the program began.”

The data collected by the turtles help researchers and conservationists make informed decisions about sea turtle conservation and management.  Since the event first kicked off at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort back in 2008, STC and Disney have collaborated to monitor 29 sea turtles. This year, Disney Cruise Line also sponsored local students from Club Esteem in Melbourne, Florida to participate in the event.

To date, the event has successfully raised more than $5.1 million to support global sea turtle conservation efforts.

The Disney Conservation team has dedicated nearly 19,000 hours to studying and monitoring sea turtle nests during the summer nesting season at the coastline at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.  Those staying at the property from May to October may have the unique opportunity to observe real-time sea turtle research.

Tour De Turtles Celebrates Sea Turtles, Supernatural and Science at Disney’s Vero…

16 TH annual event features turtles named after characters in Disney’s   frighteningly fun adventure movie, “Haunted Mansion,” now playing in theaters

VERO BEACH, Fla. (July 29, 2023) – Earlier today at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, researchers from the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) and Disney Conservation released two sea turtles as part of the 16 th annual Tour de Turtles “migration marathon.” Tour de Turtles is a fun, educational event that follows the migration of sea turtles from their nesting beaches to their feeding grounds and, ultimately, provides scientific data on how best to protect their species.

The Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) and Disney Cruise Line are each sponsoring a turtle this year, whose names, Madame Leota and Harriet, are the names of characters in Disney’s frighteningly fun adventure movie “Haunted Mansion,” now playing in theaters. Not unlike Gabbie, another character in the film who enlists a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters – Tour de Turtles brings together a team of researchers from the STC and Disney Conservation annually to undertake a daunting mission – using satellite telemetry to track two female turtles to determine where and how far they swim during the migration season.

Each turtle swims to raise awareness about various threats to sea turtle survival. The turtle to swim the furthest distance will win the Tour de Turtles race.

The data collected during Tour de Turtles helps researchers, conservationists and governing agencies make more informed decisions about sea turtle conservation and management. Since the launch of the event in 2008, STC and Disney have collaborated to study29 sea turtles outfitted with satellite transmitters and released from Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. Continuing its commitment to strengthen youth education programs in port communities around the world, Disney Cruise Line proudly supported local students from Club Esteem from Melbourne, Florida, to participate in this year’s event. DCF also has directed more than $5.1 million to support global sea turtle conservation efforts.

“Disney is a fantastic collaborator,” said David Godfrey, STC Executive Director. “Disney’s commitment to conservation, passion for environmental education, and effectiveness at communicating with audiences have made the Tour de Turtles a fun and successful program since it was launched over a decade ago.”

In addition to Tour de Turtles, the Disney Conservation team has dedicated nearly 19,000 hours to studying and monitoring sea turtle nests during the summer nesting season along the five-mile coastline at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. From approximately May to October, Disney Vacation Club members and resort guests also have the opportunity to assist the team by joining outings to observe real-time sea turtle research while learning how they can take action to protect sea turtles. So far this year, the Disney Conservation team has a record-breaking number of nests along their survey route – nearly 2,000 by August, well above the average 1,500 normally counted in an entire season.

Tour de Turtles is a research and education program of the Sea Turtle Conservancy and Disney’s support is just one example of bringing Disney Planet Possible to life by taking action to make a happier, healthier planet possible for all. Madeline Soto case: Search continues for missing Florida girl after arrest made

Man killed, 6 others wounded in shootout in orlando neighborhood, a rip current statement in effect for coastal flagler region, ‘tour de turtles’ makes a splash at disney’s vero beach resort, educational event follows migration of sea turtles.

VERO BEACH, Fla. – On your mark… get set… GO!

The 16th annual Tour de Turtles officially kicked off at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort Saturday morning.

The event allows guests staying at the beachside resort to see the moment two large sea turtles are released back into the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

[TRENDING: Become a News 6 Insider ]

Disney partners with the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC), one of the oldest sea turtle conservation groups in the world, to bring the event to dozens of hotel guests and locals. Hitched with satellite transponders on their shells, each sea turtle pings back data showing just how far they swim during the migration season. Disney said that not only does the special moment raise awareness about sea turtle conservation, but also provides researchers with critical data to further protect the animals.

“We’re learning a lot of valuable information about where they spend their time so that we can protect the ocean environments they occupy, and not just afford them the same protections on the nesting beaches,” said Rachel Smith, Disney Conservation manager.

With it being Disney, each sea turtle could be considered a shell-ebrity when it comes to their names.

This year’s turtles — in honor of the release of Disney’s all-new live-action film, “The Haunted Mansion” — sported the names Madame Leota and Harriet.

Tour de Turtles is happening during a historic year for the reptiles along the Florida coastline. Disney said its teams along the coast are seeing a huge influx in the number of nests of both loggerhead and green sea turtles – two turtles that are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

“Our team at Disney Conservation, we monitor a five-mile stretch of beach just outside Disney’s Vero Beach Resort in Indian River County, and in those five miles our team has recorded over 2,200 sea turtle nests so far this year, and the previous record for our team is in the 1,600′s for the entire season,” Smith said. “So, we are well ahead of where we’ve ever been! We’re in uncharted territory.”

This week, Disney said loggerhead sea turtles broke a record in terms of new nests, just weeks after green sea turtles swam their way to a similar feat. Disney said its team and several other conservation groups are evaluating the potential environmental factors helping drive the spike in nests being found up and down the state.

“It’s probably a lot of contributing factors, but I think it’s fair to say that we can credit the long-term conservation efforts of so many different organizations that have been working collaboratively on sea turtle conservation efforts for so long,” Smith said.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act . Wildlife experts said it takes 25 to 30 years for a sea turtle to reach maturity and return to lay their own eggs after hatching, and this year could be the second generation of turtles that are making a comeback since the conservation protections started 50 years ago.

“It’s really an exciting time for sea turtle conservationists and everyone who loves sea turtles,” Smith said.

Hatchlings generally emerge from their nests through the summer and early fall months.

Some of the biggest threats sea turtles face in the wild right now include plastic pollution, along with artificial light pollution from coastal development. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, disorientation from artificial lighting causes thousands of hatchling deaths each year in Florida and is a significant marine turtle conservation problem.

“I think for a lot of the threats that sea turtles face, they can be solved by changes in individual behavior,” Smith said. “There’s so many different things that we can do to help sea turtles.”

The Tour de Turtles will officially kickoff on Aug. 1.

Disney to release turtles at Vero Beach resort to raise awareness

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Tour de Turtles returns to Disney’s Vero Beach on Saturday.

What You Need To Know

Tour de turtles event returns to disney's vero beach disney's conservation team has partnered with the sea turtle conservancy for the event disney is releasing two turtles named madame leota and harriet, named after characters in disney's new "haunted mansion" film researchers track the turtles and learn more about them during their migration.

The annual event, now in its 16th year, is a “race” to see how far and where sea turtles swim during their migration. The turtle that swims the farthest is the “winner” of the Tour de Turtles.

Disney’s conservation team and the Sea Turtle Conservancy are partnering again for the event.

The turtles are equipped with satellite transmitters, allowing researchers, and the public, to track their progress during the migration.

Madame Leota and Harriet, two turtles Disney will be releasing this weekend, were named after characters from Disney’s new live-action film “Haunted Mansion.”

But Tour de Turtles is more than just a “migration marathon.” It’s an educational initiative to raise awareness about sea turtles and the efforts underway to protect them.

Rachel Smith, conservation program manager with Disney Conservation, says the event is also a great way for researchers to learn more about the turtles.

“We’re learning a lot about where they travel to, what type of habitat requirements they have, how we can best protect them when they’re in the water and not just visiting us on our nesting beaches,” Smith said.

Through the conservation program, Disney researchers survey a five-mile stretch of beach in that area of Indian River County. So far, the team has recorded 2,000 sea turtle nests this year, which is well above the average.

Smith said there are many possible explanations for the influx of sea turtle nests on Florida beaches such as environmental factors like the availability of forage.

“We don’t completely understand all the environmental drivers, but it’s fair to say long-term conservation efforts are playing a significant role in the rebounding we’re seeing in sea turtle populations this year,” Smith said.

Smith added that she does think that public awareness is playing a big role in sea turtle recovery.

“There’s been a network of sea turtle biologists and conservationists that have been working very collaboratively towards their recovery for a very long time, and a huge portion of that, of course, is education and outreach of the public,” Smith said.

Smith credits a lot of the work researchers have been able to do to help sea turtles to the Endangered Species Act, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.

Disney’s sea turtle conservation program is also celebrating a milestone this year — marking its 20th anniversary. Since the program’s start in 2003, more than 20,000 sea turtles nests have been been recorded. And, according to Disney, more than 1.5 million sea turtle hatchlings have taken their first strokes on the beaches of the resort.

Ready … set … SWIM!

The 15 th  annual  Tour de Turtles  is shaping up to be an epic journey for our two female sea turtles, Neytiri and Ronal.

The turtles, sponsored by the  Disney Conservation Fund  and  Disney Cruise Line , began their “migration marathon” from their nesting beaches at  Disney’s Vero Beach Resort  to feeding grounds in The Bahamas, Caribbean and beyond. Through satellite telemetry, researchers from the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) and Disney Conservation Team Wildlife will track the two female turtles to determine how far they swim during the migration season.

Neytiri and Ronal, named after characters in the highly anticipated upcoming film “Avatar: The Way of Water,” are “racing” alongside other sea turtles, each highlighting a threat to turtle survival. The turtle to swim the furthest distance wins Tour de Turtles!

The data collected during Tour de Turtles helps researchers, conservationists and governing agencies make more informed decisions about sea turtle conservation methods and policies. Since 2008, STC and Disney have studied 26 sea turtles outfitted with satellite transmitters and released from Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. In addition to the more than $4.7 million directed to help sea turtle conservation efforts globally, this year the Disney Conservation Fund is supporting STC’s new mentorship and career training program – Sea Turtle TECH – a STEM program aimed at sparking passion for sea turtle conservation among local youth from diverse and underserved communities. Students attended this year’s Tour de Turtles event to better understand how these outreach initiatives play a crucial role in protecting sea turtles.

Did you know that sea turtles have been living on planet Earth since before the time of the dinosaurs? After decades of traveling the open ocean, female sea turtles return to the nesting grounds where they were hatched to lay their own eggs. Southeast Florida, where Vero Beach is located, is one of the most important turtle nesting habitats in the world.

But life is filled with danger for a sea turtle, especially a hatchling. That’s why Team Wildlife conducts daily surveys along the nearly five miles of sea turtle nesting beaches surrounding Disney’s Vero Beach Resort to identify, mark and monitor sea turtle nests, as well as determine the number of sea turtle hatchlings produced from these nests. This helps us ensure this Disney Vacation Club resort continues to be a special place for nesting sea turtles.

As part of the celebration, a larger-than-life sand sculpture was crafted by sand artisans to commemorate the weekend.
