Campus Visits: Southern California College Visits

Are you California dreaming on a rainy spring day? Southern California (SoCal) attracts college applicants from all over the world thanks not only to its great weather, beach access, and celebrity sightings, but also to its world-class research institutions and top-ranked liberal arts colleges. The Los Angeles region, in particular, is a great destination for spring break or summer college visits since you can bundle together a number of schools in just a few action-packed days. Are you hoping to spend the next four years on the West Coast? Then this post is for you!

As with all campus visits , it’s key that you plan ahead as tours and info sessions book up fast—especially in the summer months! If you want to connect with a current student or professor while you’re on campus (something we strongly suggest you do!) you need to reach out well in advance to make these connections and coordinate the logistics.

CAMPUS VISITS: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SAMPLE ITINERARY

Day 1: la rivals campus visits.

Drive 12 miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to kick off your time in SoCal with a tour of UCLA —the largest university in the UC system, and the most selective (along with UC Berkeley ). At UCLA , campus tours last 90 minutes and are led by current students to highlight academic programs, resources and student life. The campus is known for its green spaces, world-renowned arts program, and vibrant student life. Because UCLA follows the quarter system, students are able to explore a variety of courses during the condensed 10-week terms. Given its size (over 30,000 undergraduates) freshmen often find themselves in large lecture classes. But by joining one of the many on-campus organizations, Greek life, or a club team, you can easily create smaller pockets of community on campus.

After your campus visit to UCLA, head 20 minutes south to its athletic rival, USC , where you can attend a student-led or self-guided campus tour seven days a week. USC offers another opportunity to attend school in downtown LA—though its 226-acre campus and recognizable brick buildings provide a distinctive community within the city. The undergrad enrollment hovers around 20,000, but the average class size is closer to 26 students, so there are still many opportunities to get to know your professors. USC also offers Academic Department Presentations , a great opportunity to learn more about specific undergraduate schools and courses of study. Ask your tour guide about the Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study —part of USC’s “Renaissance Ideal.” The Academy is a place to explore interdisciplinary learning and critical thinking, core tenets of USC’s academic mission. While you wait for the tour to begin, read more about the Freshman Profile and Admission Information here .

After your first day of college tours, caffeinate with a latte from famous coffee roaster, Blue Bottle Coffee, not far from the USC campus. Then head to the Santa Monica Pier to enjoy the sunset, visit the small amusement park, and grab dinner at one of the many restaurants nearby. Don’t forget to write down your reflections and notes after each campus visit!

Day 2: The Liberal Arts in LA Campus Visits

We always recommend touring a variety of colleges to determine which school’s culture, size, curriculum, and location feels like the best fit. On your second day in LA, visit Occidental College to see if you can picture yourself at a small liberal arts college. While you’re walking around this picturesque campus and vibrant Quad, you might not even remember you’re in the heart of LA (in fact, it’s frequently featured in movies about college life). Oxy takes pride in being a racially and economically diverse college community, with nearly half the student body composed of domestic students of color or international students. On-campus institutes like the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute reflect Oxy’s emphasis on social change and community-based learning. Registration is open for campus visits and on-campus information sessions, so book your session in advance. Before you go: check out some of Oxy’s Virtual Events to get a feel for the campus culture and gain a unique perspective of the college experience from current students.

After your info session, explore one of LA’s greatest cultural sites with a trip to The Getty Center, designed by architect Richard Meier. Soak in the panoramic views of LA and tour the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum—best known for its European paintings, extensive photography collection and rotating temporary exhibitions.

Day 3: The 5Cs Campus Visits

Finish up your whirlwind SoCal college tour by driving 30 minutes east of LA to Claremont, a quintessential college town with restaurants, shops, green space, and students on every corner! The Claremont Colleges, composed of seven independent institutions (5 undergraduate and 2 graduate programs), operate as a single consortium. Students are able to enjoy the benefits of a small college but draw on the resources of all campuses throughout their four years.

Each institution has its own governance and campus culture—and selectivity! See acceptance rates, below, and consider booking tours at two or more of the colleges to compare and contrast.

  • Pomona College (Acceptance Rate: 8.62%): One of the leading liberal arts colleges in the country with an undergraduate enrollment of 1,764. Half of Pomona students do research with faculty during their time on campus.
  • Scripps College (Acceptance Rate: 35.14%): A small women’s college with an emphasis on leadership and student participation. Scripps is a top producer of Fulbright students every year.
  • Claremont McKenna College (Acceptance Rate: 13.34%): A private liberal arts college with an emphasis on government, economics, and international relations.
  • Harvey Mudd College (Acceptance Rate: 17.96%): A selective engineering, science, and mathematics college.
  • Pitzer College (Acceptance Rate: 16.57%): A prestigious liberal arts college known for its programs in social sciences and environmental studies.

To close out your SoCal campus visits, put on your hiking boots and head to Hollywood! The Mt. Hollywood Trail (a three-mile loop starting from the Griffith Observatory’s parking lot) is a popular destination on the weekends and culminates with a view of the iconic Hollywood Sign. Take a deep breath and soak up the sun—this could be your home for the next four years!

Depending on your time, interests and school range, we suggest amending the itinerary above by adding (or replacing) campus visits to  Loyola Marymount University , California Institute of Technology , Chapman University , UC Irvine , and Pepperdine University

Days 4-5 Bonus Campus Visits

If you have extra time, head two hours up the coast to Santa Barbara. Here you can see UC Santa Barbara , located just steps from the Pacific Ocean, or Westmount College , a small Christian liberal arts college in Montecito.

In our Campus Visit Clusters series, we are highlighting different regions of the U.S. each week with our suggested itineraries. We’ve covered Boston and now SoCal. Next up: NorCal!

How to Make the Most of a 2-Day Los Angeles College Tour

How to Make the Most of a 2-Day College Tour in Southern California-Mothers Beach

College touring in California? Then plan on getting a taste of all the delights California has to offer. Who knows? Your student may decide to attend a college or university there and you’ll be making a main course of California. Or, quite the opposite, the campus experiences may leave you hungry to see more schools. But at the least, make the most of your combined college tours and vacationing without biting off more than you can chew. Here’s how we tackled the last leg of our California college tour in Southern California. From Marina Del Rey to Redondo Beach, USC and UCLA, we covered some ground in our 2 day college tour blitz in Southern California.

Riviera Village Redondo Beach, CA

How to Make the Most of Los Angeles College Tours

College tours and info sessions are not nearly as appealing as surfing, hiking, biking and eating in Southern California. So a plan is important. Southern California college tours have to be planned not only around personal and campus tour schedules but around wicked unexpected traffic. We expected some traffic on our San Francisco college tours, but in SoCal, we planned around traffic. If San Francisco traffic is a challenge, then Los Angeles traffic is a game. For instance, our hotel was only 18 miles from USC but we our GPS said it would take 92 minutes.  We left 2 hours early.  You can’t be afraid of being too early.

It Never Rains in California.  Not.  My husband is a USC Trojan so it almost goes without saying that we would take a tour of that campus and attend the info session. For 2 hours in the slanted blowing rain, we sloshed around campus looking for cover so we could hear our guide evangelize about the rewards of being a student at USC.  Across town, our tour of the rival UCLA, had the unfair advantage of better weather and an entire village dedicated to students.  Moral to the story: bring rain gear, even to sunny Cali.

Another key college touring tip: try to visit campus while school is in session so you get a real feel for the energy of the school and always make an appointment. This is especially vital when traveling cross country to visit schools. And by all means, factor in enough time to be on time.

And, while we’re talking about the potential for my son to travel thousands of miles away from home for college, of course I have to think about what would happen if my son were to get sick. I checked into  Medjet , an emergency evacuation membership and their key difference is that they will send you to your hospital of CHOICE and others send you to the nearest hospital.  Great for  college  kids who are miles and miles from home.

MARINA DEL REY:  A Central Location in Los Angeles

Marina Del Rey is a growing tourist area because it is centrally located in LA, near the airport and near the beaches. It’s equal distance from USC or UCLA and there is plenty to do (and eat!) in the area.

Home Base: Hilton Garden Inn Marina Del Rey

The Hilton Garden Inn lobby is cozy with a rock wall fireplace and warm hues of brown and blue. The layout is a bit funky, with a section connected by an outdoor walkway that looked like it had been added at a later date.  Our room which was facing the street was noisy. (Conveniently there are earplugs on the nightstand.)

2-Day Los Angeles College Tours-Marina Del Rey is a prime location for touring LA colleges

I would have preferred having a suite or one of their king suites with a wall partition but they were occupied.  Our single room with two queen beds felt a little crowded since I was traveling with my son and his friend but it was only for two nights. Book your hotel ahead of time so you can get the room you want.

How to Make the Most of a 2-Day Los Angeles College Tour. Marina Del Rey shuttle saves you from driving!

Marina Del Rey has its own shuttle to cart people around within a 1 mile radius.  Text the address where you want to be picked up and voila they appear.  One mile is enough distance to take you from the hotel to the library, great food, paddleboarding, kayaking and shopping.  The boys did some stand-up paddleboarding in the bay, which was a great learning experience because the water was so calm.  Mother’s Beach is well known for its wave-free water, making it super baby and toddler friendly.  The parks offer free wi-fi and free festivals in the summer.

How to Make the Most of a 2-Day Los Angeles College Tour. Mother's Beach

Bikes are available for rent at the hotel and a short bike ride away is Marina Village, a kitschy landmark village of shops and seafood.  It hasn’t changed much since I biked near it 20 years ago but there are big plans to renovate the entire area.  It’s still a lovely walk and favorite tourist stop.  There is a water taxi that will take you to 8 different stops on the bay for $1.

Killer Shrimp

Having lived in LA in the 90s, I remember Killer Shrimp from back in the day, It used to be a whole in the wall in a strip mall, serving shrimp in a delicious bouillabaisse 3 ways: with rice, bread or pasta.  We always ordered a bucket of Coronas and sopped up the sauce with loads of bread.

Now it’s a whole new huge brand with an expanded menu, a 24 hour cafe next door and a gorgeous view of the water.  The staple menu item is still their signature Killer Shrimp in bouillabaisse but I will go back for the outstanding crab claws that they just added to the menu.  Oh–and the bread pudding.

Unique fact: Killer Shrimp has one employee whose job is to dole out the spices into baggies to have ready for the chefs. Now that’s some dedication to the right balance of spices!

Join our Private Disney FB Group for more tips! JOIN HERE

If you are visiting Marina Del Rey in your boat, you can dock and dine at Killer Shrimp . It’s like  free boat parking while you eat in the restaurant.

REDONDO BEACH

Beach Boys, surfers, bike paths and palm trees – that is Redondo Beach.  After days of college tours, too much driving and unpacking, our reward was 2 days at the beach. Every beach has its own personality and Redondo is known for being family friendly, casual and relaxed.  Riviera Village has sweet shops and coffee stops. North Redondo, where we stayed is close to the freeway but about 5 miles from Manhattan Beach and 10 miles from the sands of Redondo Beach so plan accordingly.

Making the Most of a 2-Day Los Angeles College tour

Home Base: Hilton Garden Inn Redondo Beach

Because of the way the city of Redondo Beach is shaped, our Hilton Garden Inn was not on the beach; we were technically closer to Manhattan Beach than Redondo. The hotel offered a shuttle to Redondo Beach and within a 3 mile radius but only on weekdays. However, the Redondo Beach train station is a three minute walk from the hotel. We did not have time to explore the train but I would stay there again just for that access.

HGI is bright and clean and bustling with groups and business travelers. The breakfast buffet ($14.95) looked fresh and plentiful and the HGI sports bar’s happy hour featured $ 3 drinks and $5 appetizers.

We did not get to sit outside or enjoy the pool because of rain and uncharacteristic cold weather.  Speaking of rain, adjoining rooms make rainy days easier to enjoy. You can relax in your room without being on top of each other.  The price for the rooms made that decision easy too – $129-$149/night.

Unique feature: For $20 (free for suite guests), the Hilton Garden Inn Redondo Beach has a special brand of scented Greek toiletries for those that are serious about their scents.  I still don’t get the connection but the front desk gave me several samples, with enthusiastic endorsements. I tried it all and I am not a fan. The shower gel, shampoo and body lotion were too perfumey for me.

Laundry Service:   I tried a new service in Redondo, albeit a little too late into the trip: a 24 hour laundry service to pick up and deliver our laundry for $ 1.65 per pound. But be forewarned, there’s a 10# minimum. I recommend the idea but this service still has a ways to go in the folding department.  Having laundry done can help with lightening your packing load. Hey, I’m all for saving money on baggage fees.

Marina Bike Rentals

Our fun activity was to get bikes with Marina Bike Rentals.  The owner is a retired police officer who has been renting bikes to tourists for 28 years.

Major and I mean MAJOR perk: Marina Bike offers free parking. No time wasted looking for parking and quarters to pay for parking.  The bikes are well tuned and there are several types to choose from: cruisers, road bikes, cruisers with speeds, etc.  We logged miles from Torrance, Redondo Beach village, the Redondo Pier, and the Fisherman’s Wharf Village.

Biking is a fantastic way to see a city up close and it’s likely you will find unplanned treasures.  We happened on the local Farmer’s Market and where we tasted guava and Cara Cara oranges.

Kincaid’s Redondo Beach

Kincaid’s reminds me how nice it is to have a fancy dinner and get dressed up a bit more. The restaurant is partnering with Le Chef Bakery, Newport Meats and Kenter Canyon Farms for seasonal produce from local and regional growers.

Hands down, the calamari was the best I’ve had anywhere, light, tender and crispy,  like my mother-in-law makes it. The teens chose Lamb Chop and Seafood Risotto, and if the clean plates were any indication, they loved it! That the beauty of dining out while traveling with teen boys: no to go boxes!

Can’t decide between the steak and seafood? Go with the dinner combos like Grilled Smoked Sirloin & Jumbo Prawns or Filet Mignon & Petite Lobster Tail.

Redondo Year-round: Visit Redondo has all the event and festival information.  If you’re fortunate enough to visit in December, don’t miss the Holiday Boat Parade, a local tradition for over 50 years.

Suggested College Tour Itineraries

college tours map

Here are some suggestions for schools to visit, grouped by region, to get you rolling. Each list includes 5-6 schools that offer a range of sizes, settings and selectivity to help imagine the possibilities.  We also suggest others worth considering and why.

Cities currently covered include Boston, New York City, Syracuse, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Click on the Continue Reading link below to see our suggestions, or try our College Tour Planner to build your own custom campus tour itinerary.

Suggested starting point

  • Boston College
  • Northeastern
  • Boston University

These popular Boston area schools represent a good mix of size, setting and admissions selectivity.  All are easily accessed via public transportation, and given their relative proximity you can squeeze in two campus visits a day if necessary.

For a taste of smaller schools in more rural locations, consider driving to western Massachusetts to visit Amherst , Williams , Hampshire College , Smith or UMass Amherst .  If you're interested in engineering, check out Olin , UMass Lowell and WPI , and if you're interested in entrepreneurship visit Babson .

Boston campus visits itinerary

  • Sarah Lawrence

Though we've contained the list to schools in NYC, it's easy to venture out into upstate NY, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania if you're game.  If you're interested in visiting Ivy League schools, both Yale and Princeton are within relatively easy reach by car, bus or train. Cornell is four hours away, but if you head up that way you can also visit Colgate and Hamilton to give you a taste of small, medium and large schools in rural settings.

New York campus visits itinerary

  • Syracuse University
  • Ithaca College
  • Hobart and William Smith

The schools on this list offer a great mix of size, setting and selectivity. If environmental science and forestry are your thing, check out SUNY ESF , and if you have time to venture to Rochester, check out the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology .

San Francisco

  • UC Berkeley
  • UC Santa Cruz
  • University of San Francisco
  • Santa Clara University

Most of the San Francisco Bay area schools tend to be larger in size, but offer great variety in terms of locale/setting. Three popular University of California campuses are within two hours: the more rural, bicycle-friendly Davis, the urban, progressive Berkeley, and the earthy-crunchy Santa Cruz.

Los Angeles

  • Claremont Colleges
  • UC San Diego

These popular Southern California schools offer a good mix of size, setting and selectivity. You'll need a car to see them all, but in certain situations it's still very possible to squeeze in two campus visits a day.  The Claremont Colleges— Pomona , Claremont McKenna , Pitzer , Harvey Mudd and Scripps —are particularly interesting to visit because of their setup as a consortium with distinct campuses but shared classes.

If you're interested in STEM fields, be sure to check out Caltech and Harvey Mudd. If film or animation are your thing, check out Chapman University , Cal Arts and Loyola Marymount in addition to USC and UCLA.

Hollywood Los Angeles Pixabay Public Domain

California, out of all of America’s states, has always been the idyllic paradise where dreams are sought and found, and Los Angeles is its grand centerpiece. Los Angeles is a tourist’s ultimate dream with a plethora of fascinating, exciting, and luxurious attractions for student groups large and small to enjoy.

Tinseltown, the city of golden opportunity, cinema, celebrities, and the white sands of the expansive, blue Pacific. Hollywood remains a Los Angeles landmark of the film industry with the iconic Hollywood sign, the TCL Chinese Theatre, and the host theater of the Academy Awards, Dolby Theatre. Take a tour of the Sunset Strip or of the celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. Look into the making of your favorite films at Universal Studios, Warner Bros., or Sony Pictures.

Los Angeles does not, however, begin and end with Hollywood. This sun-soaked metropolis has everything from 40,000-year-old tar pits at La Brea to the most luxurious and high-end shopping district at Rodeo Drive. Relax on the 75 miles of sandy coastline, walk along the boardwalks, people-watch at Venice Beach, or surf the waves with the pros. Visit Walt Disney’s original theme park creation at Disneyland to ride the thrilling coasters, themed attractions, and to meet your favorite characters like Cinderella and Mickey Mouse. Experience the nature and wildlife of California at Griffith Park and the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Catch a Lakers game, see a concert at the Orpheum or the Staples Center, or see a movie sitting in the Hollywood Forever cemetery.

There is no shortage of attractions or fascinations in Los Angeles with ten major regions to explore including Hollywood, the Valley, Westside, and Santa Monica. Stop by the tourist destinations and then seek out hidden gems, local hotspots, and cultural landmarks in the City of Angels.

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Berkeley: My family’s weird COVID-era college tour

Even in the best of times, a college-tour road trip feels like gambling with your nest egg. On every campus, you and your kid half-listen to the guide, scan the sky for portents and tell yourselves that you have an edge. Or that nobody does.

So what are those trips like now, with COVID still afoot, campuses deserted, tours canceled and admissions policies in flux across the land? I can tell you, because on April 5, after a year of canceled trips and virtual 11th grade, my family set off to see some colleges.

In the course of a 1,100-mile spring break journey, we drove and traipsed our way through 11 California campuses, often tiptoeing on the fringe of forbidden territory. It was a marathon, without the cheering masses.

We hit the road on a Monday — my wife, Mary Frances; me; and our 16-year-old, a.k.a. the Applicant, whose first college application deadlines are in the fall.

Because Mary Frances and I are over 50 and the Applicant works as an aide with young students, we all had one vaccine shot under our belts. Still, we stayed masked when we weren’t eating or in the car, and we resolved to keep our distance from others. This was easy, especially at first.

A building and students on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

We began with one of the state’s youngest campuses: Cal State University Channel Islands , founded in 2002 on the grounds of the former Camarillo State Mental Hospital in Ventura County.

It was a gorgeous campus, with splendidly preserved and updated Mission Revival buildings, but so empty and quiet you could hear the wind rustling palm fronds from 100 yards off.

Too quiet. Nearby a notice warned that access was “restricted to authorized persons only.”

What to do? We asked a campus security officer for directions to the bookstore, bought a pen and notepad, strolled past a dry fountain, a dolphin sculpture and the vast, locked library, then did the rest of our inspection by car.

We read several warnings like the one at Cal State Channel Islands over the following days and may have overlooked one or two others.

Pride of Madeira flowers in front of a building at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Though residence halls were beginning to repopulate at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo , UC Santa Cruz and elsewhere (with extensive COVID testing programs), most UC and Cal State students were still studying remotely.

None of the campuses I checked (except tiny Westmont College) had resumed on-site tours. They all have virtual offerings, so anyone considering a college trip this summer should check campus websites and social media accounts carefully and repeatedly.

Apart from their COVID testing sites, every college seemed either asleep or just waking up. And at just about every one, we’d spot a family or two like ours, furtively crossing a quad, stocking up on merch, steering clear of security.

At Stanford's Cantor Arts Center, a banner advertises an exhibition called "The Melancholy Museum."

Though five of the 11 campus bookstores were closed, we’d often find students scattered on the nearby lawn ( UC Santa Barbara , for example) or staging cap-and-gown graduation photos ( UC Merced and Cal State Fresno ). If the store was open, we pounced, because they’d usually be staffed by friendly undergrads (UC Davis and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).

Either on campus grounds or neighboring streets, we’d find undergrads, alumni, staff, faculty or friends to tell us things (UC Davis, Stanford and UC Santa Cruz, for instance).

Thanks to a few hours of advance work (and sites such as College Navigator and niche.com , which gather and organize data that many schools conceal behind websites), we had a spreadsheet showing every school’s undergrad enrollment, last year’s admission rates, typical GPAs and test results for those admitted, tuition and fees, and financial aid details.

And thanks to my memories of Cal State Fresno and Mary Frances’ of UC Santa Cruz, the Applicant had all the anecdotes a teenager could stand.

Students walk through Sather Gate on the UC Berkeley campus.

As we continued north, the campuses seemed to get busier — a bit less Edward Hopper, a bit more David Hockney — perhaps because spring break was winding down or because restrictions were loosening throughout the state.

Yet we found easy parking at each campus.

I have to type that again. Easy parking. Frequently free. Also, because we had no official appointments or tours, we could show up when we chose, glean what mattered and bail when we saw fit.

Day by day, the Applicant got bolder about roaming, asking questions, thinking aloud. Assumptions fell. Discoveries arose. Shapes replaced abstraction.

“Reminds me of an Italian villa,” said the Applicant, appraising Westmont College in Montecito.

At Stanford, we marveled at the uniform architecture and grass, no blade out of place. At Berkeley (“Closed to Visitors,” said a campus notice), we saw a lawn as disheveled as Boris Johnson in a headwind and joined the foot traffic between Telegraph Avenue and the school’s Sather Gate.

“I like how urban it is,” said the Applicant, a city kid.

Under the redwoods in Santa Cruz, a trio of deer drew within five feet of us. In San Luis Obispo, we misplaced the car for half an hour. In Davis, we admired the blend of bikes, town and gown.

By week’s end, we had covered about 27 campus miles on foot — a marathon indeed.

“Now we know where all the bathrooms are,” said the Applicant. We also have a substantially rearranged leaderboard.

Berkeley, which no longer seemed so daunting, moved up. So did my alma mater, Fresno.

Stanford, UC Santa Cruz and Cal Poly SLO held their positions.

UC Merced remained a dark horse, but we give that largely isolated campus credit: It was the only one to have devised and staffed a drive-through tour route.

Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara and Westmont have slipped a few notches. For the moment.

Despite the many limits and few people, this turned out to be a priceless excursion, a chance to examine our expectations and compare notes on diversity and privilege, among other things. By mid-June, as the reopening continues, trips like this will be even more rewarding.

Of course, we can’t guess which school or schools will reciprocate the Applicant’s affections. One of those we just saw? Someplace farther south or out of state? A community college?

To complicate matters, the University of California and many elite private colleges have decided to pay less attention to SAT and ACT scores, setting off a historic surge in freshman applications, followed, of course, by a surge in rejections that reached many 12th graders just as we were planning our great adventure.

Meanwhile, hundreds of private schools, Cal State campuses and community colleges are angling to snag students searching for a match.

As for our Applicant, who knows? Whatever comes, we’ll always have this strange spring and those 1,127 miles.

They have a nice pool and patio area at the HGI. For dinner you could drive a mile south to Manhattan Beach , and have dinner at one of the many restaurants around the Pier and beach. The Kettle is a local favorite.

http://thekettle.net/

I don't have any suggestion for the Claremont College, perhaps the college has suggestions.

I believe that there is a Doubletree which is part of the Hilton family near the Claremont Colleges. Geographically Claremont is an outlier from the other campuses so its hard to stay one place and be close to all of them.

You could even use Santa Monica as a base for USC , but traffic on that route can be bad (mainly east on I-10 from Santa Monica). Closer options to USC would be to stay in downtown LA. Hilton & Marriott properties there include the Hilton Checkers, the older downtown LA Marriott and the new JW Marriott at LA Live. USC is just south of downtown LA on the 110 freeway. You didn't state your travel dates but there's also a new light rail train that will be commencing service on April 28, the Expo Line, which will travel from the 7th St. Metro Center in downtown LA (near Hilton Checkers and the older downtown LA Marriott) and also from the Pico/Chick Hearn station (near the JW Marriott at LA Live) down to USC.

If it were me, I'd probably do Santa Monica for UCLA and Pepperdine first, then USC (downtown LA if you want to be closer) and then Claremont. Or reverse that. The other major four-year colleges your travels will bring you close to would be UC Irvine which is an excellent school in its own right, and LMU (Loyola Marimont University) which is near LAX. Or, if you have an interest you could even go to San Diego to see UC San Diego and San Diego State U.

I agree with MachThree. His suggestions for where to base yourselves are very good.

Do stay the night in Claremont, DoubleTree is the closest hotel to the Claremont Colleges, it is clean and well run. The rooms are very small, but it should be fine for a night or two.

You might want to have a look at Occidental College in Eagle Rock and Whittier College while you are here.

For Malibu, you can take the freeway (405 to 10 to PCH) off hours (after 9 am should do it), plus you'll be going against traffic.

For Claremont Colleges I would try to get Hotel Casa 425 in Claremont if possible.

There is a Marriott Residence Inn in Bev Hills if you have enough points.

For Claremont, Hilton Points there is the Double Tree Claremont Hotel.

Some thoughts:

- Palm Springs will be very hot end of May/mid-June. I mean terribly, uncomfortably hot!

- Most private colleges end mid-May. The schedule for campus visits may be different when the schools are closed, but I'm sure a look at their websites will tell you anything you need to know about that.

- The UC's will have classes into June, but finals week is June 9 to 18th (including graduations) and there may not be tours during that time.

Have a great visit.

Thanks for information about colleges too. My child's "dream school" is USC but the area around it is her parent's nightmare - that's why we're pushing Pepperdine and Claremont colleges, plus I think her chances for a large scholarship are much better at those schools. Just like we have to pay for this trip with points, we have to pay for college with scholarships!
