Our Holland Bike Tours

Cycling in the Netherlands is a revelation. It is simply the most bicycle-friendly country on the planet: a haven for cyclists with more than 20,000 miles of traffic-free bike paths, all of which can be used to explore a magnificently pristine countryside dotted with postcard perfect towns and cities.

The scenery is truly impressive: acres of tulip fields, dense forests, tranquil waterways, and working, historic windmills. Water is dominant, with only about 50%  of the country being more than 1 meter above sea level, leading to the need for the country to be be managed by the world’s most complex network of dikes and canals.

The towns and cities you will cycle through are also delightful: medieval gems crammed with cafés, historic sites, and exceptionally good museums. Our Netherlands bike tours take you from Naarden to the loops of Utrecht and the city itself. We’ll then bike over to Gouda on our way to Leiden and a loop thru Delft. Next will be the loops of Haarlem and the city. With our last major city being Alkmaar and a loop around the surrounding countryside.

Here, the car is not king and the bicycle rules. A full 36% of the population cites the bicycle as their most frequent mode of transportation.  Cycle paths extend outside of cities, connecting Dutch villages, towns and cities. Many roads have one or two cycling paths that parallel them, otherwise paths are marked on the roads themselves.

The flat terrain and separation from cars makes Holland an ideal destination for beginner, intermediate and family cycling. Learn more about the LifeCycle Adventures difference.

Day 2: Gouda Loop Day

Day 3: Gouda to Leiden

Day 4: Leiden Loop Day

Day 5: Leiden to Haarlem

Day 6: Haarlem Loop Day

Day One - Utrecht to Gouda

Today you ride from a medieval university town to an ancient cheese town. Most of the riding is on scenic bike routes alongside canals and small rivers.

The Intermediate route heads south from Utrecht before heading west to the small town of Oudewater with its beautiful town center and scales for weighing witches! On leaving Oudewater, the route follows the Hollandse Ijssel river into the center of Gouda.

Leisure riders enjoy a similar day to the Intermediate riders but take a more direct route, west, out of Utrecht.

The Challenge route leaves Utrecht via the Vecht river, a picturesque waterway lined with castles and country estates. From the village of Breukelen, the route takes you up to the castle ‘de Haar’ and the historic town of Woerden. From Woerden, the route continues to Oudewater where it joins the final section of the Intermediate route for the ride into Gouda.

OVERNIGHT TOWN

Gouda produces one of the best-known cheese in the world. Gouda is also famous for its dense network of canals, the 15th-century city hall, and the beautiful stained-glass windows of the Sint-Jans church. Culinary, calorie-laden treats include Stroopwafels.

Day Two - Gouda Loops

Today’s rides head south of Gouda through typical Dutch landscapes captured by many famous painters. You ride on bike lanes alongside canals and past picturesque farms. The major attraction of the ride is the UNESCO monument of the Kinderdijk windmills: a group of 19 monumental windmills built between 1738 and 1740.

The Challenge ride takes you past the Kinderdijk windmills before heading up the Rhine Valley to the historic town of Schoonhoven where silversmiths and goldsmiths have worked since the 17th century. From Schoonhoven to Gouda you cycle along one of the most scenic small rivers of the Netherlands (the Vlist) with its many farms, hidden lanes and scenic views.

The Intermediate ride follows a similar route to the challenging ride but bypasses the town Schoonhoven taking a more direct route back into Gouda.

The Leisure ride focuses on the charming lowlands: the origin of the famous Gouda cheese. You will pass the Jongenhoeve cheese farm where you can taste homemade cheese. Note that this route does not pass the Kinderdijk windmills.

Day Three - Gouda to Leiden

Leaving the town of Gouda you enter the ‘Green Heart‘ of Holland passing canals and windmills all the way to Boskoop. Boskoop is situated on long stretches of land, divided by narrow canals and is famous for its nurseries. After riding though the lowlands, you arrive at the historic student town of Leiden.

The Intermediate route takes you through the recreational lakes to the north of Gouda to town of Boskoop with its quiet streets lined with impressive homes. From Boskoop, the ride continues through the largest floriculture area in the world situated on long stretches of land divided by narrow canals, As you ride into Leiden, you also pass the Heineken headquarters.

The Challenge route follows the intermediate route to Boskoop but from here it heads north through the windmill district to the east of Leiden through the charming villages of Rijpwetering and Oud Ade before returning south into Leiden.

The Leisure ride takes a more direct route from Gouda to Leiden but also passes through the village of Boskoop.

Leiden is a lively town known for its medieval architecture, its maze of narrow streets, and for Leiden University – founded in 1575 and the country’s oldest. Leiden is also the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn. The Museum De Lakenhal has many works by old masters including Lucas van Leyden, Jan Steen, and, of course, Rembrandt.

Day Four - Leiden Loops

For Intermediate and Challenge riders, Delft is the target city for the day. Delft is best known for its blue and white pottery which has been produced here since the 16th century. Delft is also a charming town in its own right and it is well worth taking time to explore its canals, churches, mansions, museums, markets and cafés.

Intermediate riders loop back to Leiden from Delft.

Challenge riders continue south from Delft on an extra loop that explores a rural haven that is surrounded by the skylines of Delft, Rotterdam, and The Hague.

Leisure riders take on a shorter loop that includes Vlietland: a spacious park busy with activities such as sailing, kayaking, camping and climbing.

Day Five - Leiden to Haarlem

On today’s Intermediate route, you cycle north into the heart of tulip country. The ride passes Keukenhof Botanical Gardens*: an expansive 19th-century park showcasing thousands of Dutch spring flowers. The second part of your ride turns west, arriving at the coast, where you head north alongside the North Sea. The bike path here snakes through large sandy dunes and is one of the most stunning cycle routes in the country. On reaching the beach town of Zandvoort, you head east to the medieval city of Haarlem.

Leisure follow the Intermediate route to the Keukenhof Botanical Gardens* but rather than then heading to the coast, you ride directly to Haarlem.

The Challenge route takes you west before turning north towards the Keukenhof Botanical Gardens. After a loop touring tulip country, you join intermediate for the coastal ride up to Haarlem.

*The Keukenhof Botanical Gardens are typically open from the last week in March until the second week in May. Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended.

The medieval city of Haarlem sits partway between Amsterdam and the coastal dunes. The narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful old squares are lined with gabled houses, cafés and museums. The town is also at the center of the Dutch flower industry.

Day Six - Haarlem Loops - Last Day

Your ride today showcases two different sides of Haarlem: to the east, there are the typical Dutch polders (fields protected by dikes) and, to the west, sand dunes and beaches. One highlight of the day is the beautiful Zuid-Kennemerland National Park – an area of wide open dunes and beaches. Another highlight is the fortifications of the Defense Line of Amsterdam – an intricate system of canals, locks, and fortifications (and a UNESCO World Heritage site).

On the Leisure route, you enjoy a short ride along the coast before heading back to Haarlem.

On the Intermediate route, you ride more of the coast – south to Zandvoort (one of the most popular seaside resorts in Holland) – before turning inland back to Haarlem.

For the Challenge ride, the route first heads over the Binnentoeleidingskanaal. After a loop of North Holland, you return south to join the Intermediate route back to Haarlem.

BIKE CHOICES

Hybrid bike.

Hybrids bikes, a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike

Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.

Road bikes, a racing style bike with drop handlebars

Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)

eBikes, designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills

Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.

Your Own Bike, if you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there

If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.

The first thing tourists notice when they arrive in the Netherlands is the bikes. So many bikes! Cycling in the Netherlands is a way of life and it’s a part of our culture and heritage that we love to share with visitors. And in this post, we share 15 incredible bike tours to explore the Netherlands.

So, hop on – we’re going for a ride!

Is Netherlands good for cycling?

More than 25% of the Netherlands is at or below sea level. Being a mostly flat country makes the Netherlands a great destination for a bike tour.

It’s easy and fun to explore the whole of the Netherlands from the seat of a bicycle. Out in the countryside, you can get away from the crowds and discover the most beautiful sights by bike. In the big cities, like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, you can join the throngs of daily commuters and cycle along with the networks of cycle paths. Taking a bike tour in the Netherlands offers a wonderful sense of freedom but there are lots of motorists in the cities too so do take more caution when the traffic is busy.

Netherlands bike tour: dos and don’ts

Netherlands Bike tour

  • Rent a Dutch bike for your bike tour. Our bikes are the best in the world!
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothes, preferably sportswear.
  • Use your bike lights and your bell. Safety first!
  • Take a paper map or download a digital map if you’re self-guiding. On bike tours in the Netherlands you may lose connection to the internet.
  • Carry enough water and snacks, even if you’re on a guided tour.
  • Take your bike on the train with a Bicycle Day Travel Card.

Don’t

  • Ride your bike when intoxicated. Not only is it dangerous, it’s illegal and could land you a €140 fine.
  • Leave your bike unlocked. Bike theft is common, particularly in Amsterdam.
  • Forget to pack a bicycle repair kit!
  • Cycle on footpaths!

Like the skating tour, there’s also an organized Elfstedentocht bike tour once a year that is open to the public up to a maximum of 15,000 entrants. But if you’re not around during this organized event, use the map and cycle it on your own peace.

DAY TO DAY SCHEDULE

Day 1: arrive in amsterdam.

Your cycling holiday begins in Amsterdam. Your hotel is situated in a quiet part of town right next to a large canal. The city of Amsterdam offers something for both families with children as well as people enjoying the nightlife. With so much attractions, a more vibrant start of your cycling is almost inconceivable. If you arrive on time in Amsterdam, make a stroll through the quaint town center full of cozy restaurants and terraces. Or just stay inside your hotel and enjoy a nice dinner. Just watch the characteristic mansions and magnificent seventeenth-century canals (UNESCO status). Walk on through the renowned city centre district with its dozens of canals that attracts millions of tourists annually, or admire the Rembrandt Square.

Day 2: Amsterdam – Haarlem

In the end of the morning it’s time to leave. Via quiet bikeways (you don’t bike through the busy city) you leave the capital of The Netherlands. The hustle and bustle of the city is soon replaced by a unique natural landscape: Kennemerland. In the area Kennemerland you will find a unique variety of natural beauty, such as polders, unique botanical gardens, deep forests and beautiful “veen” areas. You spend the night in the typical Dutch city of Haarlem, which is rich in art, culture, monuments, restaurants and cafes. Being one of the most beautiful old Dutch cities, Haarlem deserves to be extensively explored. In this monumental city with many attractions, you can wander around for hours without being bored for a moment. Do you fancy a morning soak art? Spend a visit to the Frans Hals Museum where you’ll find unique art from the Golden Age.

Day 3: Haarlem- Leiden

After Haarlem you go for a colorful bike ride through the famous Dutch Bollenstreek- the area where majority of the Dutch flower bulb crops grow. With her beautiful flower fields of tulips, crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths, this region is, in the spring and summer, the most colorful region of the Netherlands. After Lisse, with the beautiful flowerpark the Keukenhof, you cycle through the Kagerplassen (lakes) to Leiden. In the center of the Kagerplassen lies the picturesque island of Kaag. Once you’ve passed with the ferry, you imagine yourself in another world. The many old houses give the impression that time has stood still in this unique village. At the end of the afternoon you will arrive in Leiden, another beautiful historic city which is rich in sights. The city has much to offer. Beautiful are the seventeenth-century houses and characteristic canals. A visit to the oldest university in the Netherlands, the historic botanical garden and the Gothic St. Peter’s is definitely worth it. You stay here in a typical BW hotel in the city center.

Day 4: Leiden – Delft

After lively Leiden you continue your way again in the peace and quiet landscape with its typical Dutch lakes and water wildlife. You’ll cycle through a typical Dutch landscape with winding roads, wide ponds, historic mills, old farms and moss-green grasslands. In the afternoon the city of Delft is waiting for you. Like Leiden, Delft is a special historic town graced by beautiful buildings and plenty of picturesque canals. Next to the beautiful historic city, Delft is also known for ‘Delft Blue’, the production of special porcelain products in the 16th century. Worth a visit: the New Church, where the tombs of the royal family are displayed.

Day 5: Delft – Gouda

Today there is a very special route on the program. The route leads through the “green heart of Holland ‘, with characteristic old Dutch towns and villages, vast meadows and polders, typically Dutch dykes and fields and numerous ditches and canals. You spend the night in the cheese town of Gouda, a cozy old- Dutch town with a very authentic town center full of restaurants and terraces. Gouda is known for its fairytale town hall, stained glass windows and charming canals. The shopping street right in the city center also comes in handy.

Day 6: Gouda – Woerden (or Amsterdam)

After a delicious breakfast at your hotel there’s another typical Dutch day on your program. The typical Dutch landscape between Gouda and Amsterdam is characterized by ancient rivers, polders, beautiful lakes and swamps. If this stage is too long then we can divide this distance by booking an overnight stay in Woerden.

Day 7: Return

After breakfast, you go back home.

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Cyclingroute distances are approximate.

Day 1: Arrival in Amsterdam Arrive at the boat between 2:00-4:30pm in Amsterdam. Explore downtown Amsterdam; you'll have time to shop, visit a museum, or take a canal tour (discount tickets available; please reserve in advance). A canal tour is a unique way to see the capital of Holland from another side. Welcome drink, dinner and first briefing on board at 5:00pm. Overnight in Amsterdam.

Day 2: Cruise Amsterdam – Breukelen | Cycle Breukelen – Utrecht | Cruise Utrecht – Rotterdam (12 miles/20 km or 24 miles/39 km) During breakfast, you'll cruise to Breukelen where, following the distribution of bicycles, your first day of cycling will lead you along the beautiful and winding Vecht River with its enchanting background of imposing castles, country houses, and quaint tea rooms. There is simply no better way to start a cycle tour.

You will follow the Vecht into the center of Utrecht where you will have the opportunity to explore the Dom Cathedral tower and the beautiful center of the old village. In the afternoon you will continue by ship from Utrecht to Rotterdam, your destination for the day. Overnight in Rotterdam.

Day 3: Rotterdam – Schiedam – Delft – Rotterdam (28.8 miles/48 km) You will cycle today via the "jenever" city of Schiedam (jenever is a traditional Dutch gin) and through the Delfland area to Delft, famous for its blue pottery. Visit the beautiful city center with its small canals, picturesque streets, bridges and alleys. For many of our guests a visit to the Delftware factory is one of the highlights of their tour. Afterwards, you will cycle back to Rotterdam, where you can enjoy a short city walk in the evening. Overnight in Rotterdam.

Day 4: Ferry Rotterdam – Alblasserdam | Cycle Kinderdijk – (Gouda) – Schoonhoven (19 miles/30km or 36 miles/58 km) Today you will start your tour with the "waterbus," a fast ferry that will take you and your bike to Alblasserdam. After just a few minutes of cycling you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills. All 19 windmills have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing and are a definite highlight – you will have the opportunity to visit one so don't forget to bring your camera!

You then have the choice between a longer bike tour with a visit to the beautiful cheese city of Gouda or a short bike tour through the Alblasserwaard. Both tours end in the "silver city" of Schoonhoven on the Lek River, where you can visit a silversmith. Overnight in Schoonhoven.

Day 5: Cycle Schoonhoven – Oudewater – Utrecht | Cruise Utrecht – Haarlem (22 miles/36 km or 27 miles/44 km) Cycle tour from Schoonhoven through the beautiful "Green Heart" of Holland along small villages and quiet roads to Utrecht. On your way you can visit a traditional cheese farm and in Oudewater you can visit the Witches Weigh House. In the late afternoon the ship will sail from Utrecht to Haarlem. Overnight in Haarlem.

Day 6: Cycle Haarlem – North Sea coast – Haarlem | Cruise Haarlem – Zaandam (25 miles/40 km or 31 miles/50 km) Today you can choose from 2 bike tours. Both tours take you through the beautiful Kennemer dunes, a national park where you can spot several bird species, Scottish Highland cows and Shetland ponies. After a visit to the seaside resorts Bloemendaal and Zandvoort you cycle through the forests and the center of Haarlem back to the ship. The longer cycling tour leads to the largest steam engine of the world, the Cruquius pumping station and back to Haarlem. During dinner your ship will cruise to Zaandam. Overnight in Zaandam.

*Departure dates between Mar 27-May 1: On this day, you have the opportunity to visit the world-famous tulip exhibition park "Keukenhof" in Lisse (by bicycle or public transportation; transfers/tickets/entrance fee not included).

Day 7: Zaandam – Amsterdam (19 miles/30 km or 32 miles/53 km) From Zaandam your final day of cycling will take you to the open-air museum the Zaanse Schans (free entry), with its beautiful windmills, an Old Dutch village with traditional wooden houses, a cheese farm, and a traditional wooden clog maker. After exploring the museum you cycle through the recreational area “Twiske” back to Amsterdam. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer. If you didn’t go for a canal tour on the first day, you will have the opportunity to do so today. Overnight in Amsterdam.

Day 8: Amsterdam After breakfast: disembarkation by 9:30am and end of tour.

Please note that on the shorter routes you may not be able to visit all the highlights mentioned.

Great biking adventure

Holland is a beautiful country and there is no better way to see it and experience it than on a bike. We have never been on bike paths like they have, whether in a city or the middle of nowhere. We had great food at our lunch stops and everyone we met, passengers, crew and the locals were friendly. The boat was really nice as were the bikes. We plan to do another trip with BikeTours.

The Best Way I can Think Of to See Holland!

This tour lived up to my expectations. Holland was beautiful. The boat accommodations and staff were great! The bike tour guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and very personable. The miles per day on the bike was not for the faint of heart. Do your research and get a e-bike (electric bike) for anyone who is not used to biking. If you are an American, bring your GPS.

An enjoyable trip!

A good way to see some of the sights in southern Holland. Not enough time to see everything, but enough variety in the routes to get a sense of the culture, history and geography of southern Holland.

Lowlands Adventure

Fantastic trip. Incredible tour in a beautiful country on an extensive bicycle infrastructure. In fact there are so many bike routes that navigation was sometimes a challenge. The download navigation option would have been helpful. The planned routes through the countryside were excellent. The bike/ boat approach is a great way to travel avoiding the daily packing. The accommodations were very nice, the staff was excellent, and the bicycles were well maintained. The dinners were good though basic with small portion size (a common observation in Europe). Breakfast was a very good buffet with fixings to make a sandwich for lunch. Definitely recommend this tour.

Great tour.

Excellent Setup, great way to see Holland. Weather always a risk in Holland. It was cloudy, cold-ish, sometimes wet, and quite windy (but the following week, after our tour ended, was perfect with not a cloud in the sky.) The tour is well planned and you see different parts of Holland. We knew of course about the water ways, windmills and such, but we did not realise Holland is basically a swamp... Bikes are very good and crew on the boat and tour guides were very friendly and helpful. The soccer world cup was a bonus (being soccer mad), and provided excellent entertainment from our perspective. But I would suggest planning your social activities on/off the boat in advance as there is no entertainment - it's not a Caribbean cruise :) There are a few cruise legs in the evening so you can't really get off the boat. Food is good, the bar is good - buy an open bar ticket if you like a drop, it is cheaper that way. One surprising commission is a laundry facility on the boat, or at least dryers, and no information on an alternative off the boat. In any case, who'd want to spend 2 hours in a laundromat off the boat? They ought to have a facility because naturally you go through a lot more clothes in a week of cycling, especially if the weather is not kind to you. Most people were "senior citizens" on our tour, myself included (but I was an outlier in my family group). So bear this in mind if you look for younger company. Choose a harder tour if you have keen athletes in your family. I was with three in their 20s, all fit and eager (I'm 60+). They formed a breakaway group a few times. I decided to stay with the peloton and give chase later. I soon discovered it does not work with a peloton of one rider.

Celebrating 60

I looked forward to this trip for a long time and I was not disappointed. The tour guide was helpful; the meals had added touches; the staff serving were great; the bikes were well maintained. We enjoyed the areas we biked through, seeing a variety of different sights and places.

Cheese, cocoa, windmills, clogs, delft, tulips...

So many things to see that represent the Netherland: cheese, tulips, windmills, cocoa, clogs and delft pottery. It was amazing to see the bike culture there and that bikes have the right of way over everything! The network of bike paths was amazing too! It was a fun combination of boat and bike. Most of our meals were provided too, which was nice after a full day of riding and exploring!
