'A damaging blow to our city': Council Leader's statement on further bus cuts

First bus picks up passengers in Sheffield

Travel South Yorkshire today announced that First Group South Yorkshire will no longer provide a number of bus services across the county because they are no longer profitable enough to run.

As a result, several routes are now under threat and there are significant timetable changes across the city and the region.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is working hard to retain as many of the bus services as possible, which will need to be supported through additional funding.

In response to the news, Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Once again the people of Sheffield and the surrounding region have been hung out to dry by Government, allowing private transport providers to reap the benefits whilst the public pick up the costs when the services are not profitable.

"When we’re working hard to implement important sustainability schemes such as Active Travel and the Clean Air Zone, cuts to public transport such as this undermine our intentions and the wider environmental and connectivity plans we're striving towards.

“The latest bus cuts deliver yet another damaging blow to our city, our economy and most importantly our residents. Buses are a crucial element to transport in Sheffield, helping people get to school, go to work, to reach our hospitals, make their important appointments, see their family members and much more. As we work towards our goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2030, it is more important than ever that there are sustainable and greener public transport choices to tackle climate change and improve air quality. This crucial work is hindered by yet more service cuts.

“As a Council we have no direct control over the bus services within our city but I wish to assure every resident that we are doing all we can to urge the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to limit the effects this could have. The Authority has already been forced to step in and offer additional public funding this year, when school bus services were under threat just before students returned to school. And once again it is faced with another momentous challenge – keeping our county moving without appropriate support from Government. We welcome the actions of the Authority for stepping in and we will continue to discuss how to progress this matter, lobby for better bus services, and ensure the best value for money.

“I hope at some stage we reach a point where we as leaders across South Yorkshire are not expressing regret and calling for more support from the Government but instead able to confidently provide the services the people in our region deserve.”

See the Travel South Yorkshire website for the latest information about local bus services and updated timetables.

Face coverings from 19th July 2021

Face coverings do assist in reducing the transmission of coughs colds and other viruses.  From 19th July 2021 face coverings cease to be required in law on public transport and become a matter of personal responsibility.  A number of our customers are elderly and vulnerable and we do want and need them to return to using bus services.  We therefore earnestly ask all of our loyal, socially responsible dedicated customers to consider carefully the needs of their fellow passengers in making their personal decision on whether or not to wear a face mask.

New staff appointments - Operations Manager and Workshop Team Leader

We are proud to announce two internal promotions:

Paul Cobb, who started with TM as a driver, progressing to Traffic Officer and Interim AOM becomes Operations Manager.

Dan Smith, who started as an apprentice in the old TM is now our new Workshop Team Leader, running the workshop.

The passion and vigour which Paul and Dan bring to TM will help us build the company, post pandemic to a strong dynamic bus business.

Carver Street permanent closure

Services 30/30A will now operate along Rockingham Street towards Crystal Peaks & Plumbley, due to the permanent closure of Carver Street. These services will stop at Rockingham Street RS1 (37027614).

Our response to the COVID 19 pandemic

At TM Travel the safety of our colleagues and passengers is of paramount concern.

This is why, we have:

(i)    offered our drivers gloves and hand sanitiser

(ii)   reviewed and enhanced our cleaning regimes for buses

(iii)  sourced screens for our buses - which you will now see appear

(iv)  provided vehicles with capacities to allow our customers to adhere to social distancing

(v)   worked closely with local authority partners to focus our resources where they are most needed

You, our loyal customers have done a lot to help us but can we please ask:-

(i)    you to consider the time you are travelling. Capacity on buses is under a lot of pressure and we  do want to be able to offer it to as wide a cross section of our customer base as possible

(ii)   to pay with exact fare wherever possible

(iii)  to practise social distancing as far as possible on the vehicle

Together we can and we will beat this evil virus.  We really do appreciate the support of each and every one of you.

New website launched

Welcome to the new TM Travel website. Our website is your one stop shop for all information regarding our services, including school services.

First Bus MMSY

Government funded £2 flat fare initiative extended to October on bus travel in South Yorkshire, some other fares will change from 28th May

  • The Government funded £2 Flat fare remains in place until October.
  • Popular 3 in 7, 5 in 7 and 10 journey tickets offer total flexibility for travel.
  • New Tap on Tap off ticketing technology big switch on in the summer will simplify payments and can help speed up boarding times, journeys, and reliability, and is flexible and accessible for anyone with a physical digital bank or credit card.
  • £300k investment by First South Yorkshire in Tap-on Tap-Off technology to take another important step to pave the way for an all-operator integrated system in the future.

First South Yorkshire announced back in January that a fare revision would be deferred until March in line with the aspirations of the Mayor, the SY Mayoral Combined Authority, local councillors, and bus users to set out through the Enhanced Partnership to deliver more reliable services, improved bus priority measures and to introduce fare initiatives such as the government funded £2 Adult flat fare offering.

The last time First South Yorkshire’s commercial fares were revised was back in March 2022 and a lot has happened since then, with the inflation backdrop and increased costs that the business has tried to absorb, for as long as it can.

The business constantly monitor’s the travel patterns of its customers and adapts a ticketing portfolio in line with how people are travelling and aim to provide a seamless, easy way to pay for bus travel.

People will see a slight increase in cost to some fares but there are some great value tickets

that are flexible and designed to fit around how people travel. For example, with the Sheffield 5 days in 7 tickets, a person will pay less than the current rate for a day ticket.

For people that travel several times in a day or week, our Day, Week and 4-week tickets remain in place and are available to buy using a contactless payment, First Bus App or in cash from the driver. All details can be found on our website at https://www.firstbus.co.uk/sheffield/news-and-service-updates/news/new-fares-28-may

More and more people are now downloading the First Bus App to buy and store tickets on their phone, meaning you’ll never have to worry about losing a ticket or forgetting your change again. Its super easy to scan each mobile ticket when you hop on board, and you’re ready to go.

Coming this summer, the big switch on of ‘Tap on Tap off’ ticketing technology to simplify bus travel

The new ‘Tap on Tap off’ technology will be available this summer and is designed to help simplify how customers pay for their travel. The Tap-On Tap-Off contactless system guarantees customers ultimate flexibility on the fare paid.

Existing options to pay with cash or TravelMaster smartcards remain unchanged.

How the new Tap on Tap off system will work ,

Tap the card reader next to the driver on entry with a digital bank or credit card, the system will then charge for a single journey or customers who make several bus journeys will pay a capped adult day or weekly price depending upon how often they travel. On exiting the bus, Tap off using the card reader on the hand rail next to the doors.

Mike Watson, Interim Managing Director at First South Yorkshire said; -

“It has been 14 months since our last fare revision, and within that time a lot has happened to influence financial costs to the business to which we have tried to absorb.

“We constantly review the changing travel patterns of our customers and know that flexibility is important for people when buying bus travel. Our flexible 3 in 7 and 5 in 7 tickets along with day, week and 10 journey tickets remain the most popular travel options, all available on our app and from the driver.

“We have invested over £300k in Tap-on Tap-Off technology that is due to go live in the summer and provides another important step forward in simplifying journeys and to pave the way for an all-operator integrated system in the future”

“It is crucial, that for us to improve bus provision across the South Yorkshire region, we need to work together in partnership. We can then aspire to see better services, more demand and confidence returning from people wanting to use buses as their preferred method of travel”.
