If you decide that you are not up to the task, and you are rooming with someone else, they are not going to turn the ship around to bring you home, and neither is it good for the crew morale to have someone who is discontent. If hired, you will need to sign a contract of employment, with stipulations specific to Royal Caribbean. For example, in some cases, depending on your location and the ship's location, you may need to fly to the nearest airport, which will be at the your expense for the first contract. "The company covers the cost of repatriation after your contract is concluded as long as you satisfy the basic requirements of your assignment."

They also want to ensure that you have the emotional intelligence required to stay balanced while prioritizing your health and wellbeing. "We understand the importance of health and wellbeing, and we provide the resources to help our employees live their happiest and healthiest lives. We offer a variety of health services at your fingertips, with a clinic, fitness classes, chiropractor and more, all on-site." So consider what you would do to endure any hardships that you could anticipate being committed to the long run. Discuss how you would manage this lifestyle for such long durations at a time.

So encountering such a situation might prove rare, and if you aren't working in hospitality, often hearing out a customer's concerns, empathizing with them, and letting them know you will reach out to the appropriate party who can address their concern is sufficient. But look up their code of conduct and their core values, and customize your answer according to your position. Not only do cruise ship employees live in very tight quarters, but unless they are working directly with the captain or are entertainment, they often have to share accomodations with others. "Depending on your position you may share your cabin with a fellow crew member. Because space is limited onboard, cabins and bathrooms are relatively small compared to land-based accommodations, but don't worry there are plenty amenities for you to enjoy when you are off duty." Knowing that such confined quarters can be difficult for many individuals, your interviewer needs to know that you have a full picture of what this aspect of the lifestyle looks like. There are various YouTube videos out there that offer the full scope of the life of a cruise ship employee. Do your homework and come prepared to assure your interivewer that you have what it takes to thrive in such a living arrangement.

I have sailed on many cruises over the years, both internationally and domestically. I have sailed on large ships and small ships, luxury cruise lines and budget cruise lines. I have been on cruises that ranged from three nights to two weeks long. I have experienced all different types of cruising including river cruising, ocean cruising and even ice cruising! My favorite type of cruise is definitely an international ocean cruise - there's nothing quite like sailing through the open seas on a beautiful ship!

I have had experience in a number of different roles, all of which have helped me develop the skills I need for this role. I have worked in customer service, so I am used to dealing with people and resolving any issues they may have. I have also worked in a role where I was responsible for training new employees, so I am comfortable teaching new concepts to others. There are many important aspects to my job, but the most important would have to be teamwork, communication, and organization. Teamwork is essential in my job because so much of what we do depends on cooperation between team members. We need to be able to rely on one another to get the job done correctly and on time. Communication is also key, both within the team and with our clients. We need to be able to keep everyone updated on what is going on, what needs to be done, and when it is due. There are a few things that I would do in order to deal with an unhappy passenger. The first thing that I would do is try to find out what is wrong and see if there is anything that I can do to help. If the passenger is simply not happy with their seat or their experience on the flight, then I would do my best to move them to another seat or help them with any issues they may be having. If the passenger is angry or aggressive, then I would try to calm them down and explain the situation. In some cases, it may be necessary for me to

If you have been on a cruise you have probably seen a member of staff called the Cruise Director on board.  You may be wondering who they are and what they do on board the ship.

To answer these questions I interviewed a cruise director who has worked on multiple Royal Caribbean ships and surveyed past cruisers about how the cruise director affects their cruise experience.

Both ocean and river cruises have Cruise Directors onboard. They are sometimes referred to as ‘Cruise Hosts’.

The cruise director is usually one of the most recognizable members of the cruise ship crew.

What is a Cruise Director?

A cruise director is a high-ranking member of the cruise line staff who oversees the entertainment and activities happening on a cruise ship.

The cruise director’s role is front-facing and the cruise director spends a lot of their day interacting with guests. 

I asked past cruisers in my Facebook group if they remember seeing a cruise director on their last cruise. 57% said yes they remember seeing them onboard.

The most common way to become a cruise director is by working within the entertainment teams onboard and progressing up to the role of director.

What do Cruise Directors Do?

Cruise Directors host events, present theatre shows and are in charge of onboard announcements.

They also hold port talks and have many safety responsibilities.

A big part of the Cruise Director’s job is to be the friendly face of the cruise line. They often act as go-betweens, bridging the gap between guests and the cruise line itself.

When passengers have questions or need help the Cruise Director is often the person that they will ask.

Is the cruise director in charge of the entire cruise.

Some people think the cruise director is in charge of everything but it’s a misleading title. The Cruise Director’s boss is the hotel director and they are the person who’s in charge of the overall cruise .

Cruise Directors Make Onboard Announcements

Cruise directors make announcements across the ship on a tannoy system.

I personally can’t think of anything worse than having to do this, I used to work in a supermarket where I lived in constant fear of having to make a tannoy announcement.

That said, Cruise Directors are well-practiced in this skill.

The announcements can vary but common themes include:

  • The Cruise Director may let the guests know when the ship is expected to arrive and when they will be able to disembark.
  • On occasion, the Cruise Director may also let guests know about the weather and conditions in the port.
  • It is the job of the Cruise Director to read out the schedule of daily events.
  • A typical Cruise Director’s announcement may say something like ‘Tonight we have trivia in the lounge at 4 pm, live music by the pool at 5 pm, and a welcome drink with the captain at 7 pm.’
  • The Captain may also make announcements on the ship’s tannoy.

Cruise Directors Host Onboard Events

Events around the ship may be hosted by the Cruise Director or another member of the entertainment team.

On some larger ships, there may be an Assistant Cruise Director, who is the Cruise Director’s second in command.

Cruise Directors do spend a lot of their time socialising with passengers, it’s part of the job!

Do You Spend a Lot of Time Talking to Guests?

A huge part of the job is talking to the passengers and it’s hard to find enough time for it because people usually want to see the Cruise Director and want to talk to them and chat.

You want to talk to as many people as possible, but you also need to get the rest of the work done and so sometimes you have to think really hard about when you do your other work.

Theatre Shows Are Hosted by The Cruise Director 

The Cruise Director will usually host the evening’s entertainment in the theatre. Pre-show they will come out onto the stage and introduce the show.

This is particularly impressive if you are cruising on a cruise line where multiple languages are spoken. On cruises with MSC and Costa, the Cruise Director will often do the introductory speech in 6 or 7 languages.

I am continually impressed by people who speak multiple languages, I only speak English – and I still struggle with that sometimes!

I took a cruise onboard the Costa Smeralda and only 4% of the guests spoke English. The Cruise Director spoke multiple different languages. Find out how I got on on that cruise here:

Cruise Directors Host Other Events

Other events that may be hosted by the Cruise Director include things like trivia, game shows, and parties.

The cruise director will usually host a Q&A with the captain if the ship has one, if there are any celebrities on board they’ll also host the Q&A with them.

There is a common misconception that the majority of a Cruise Director’s job is mostly interacting with the passengers.

Is Your Role Mostly Interacting With Passengers?

The front-of-house side of the job is such a small part of the role. Take the theatre shows for example. You’re on the theatre stage for either 30 seconds or 10 minutes depending on how much you talk and then you go off stage. You do loads of other stuff whilst the show’s happening and you come back at the end of the show.

It May Be The Cruise Director Who Hosts Port Talks

On some cruise lines, the Cruise Director will be responsible for providing information about the ports of call.

On a river cruise line, this is almost always the job of the Cruise Director.

Ocean cruises work slightly differently as they may have a member of the excursions team or a local guide speaking about the destinations you will visit. On occasion, you will find the Cruise Director doing this.

Cruise Directors are Responsible For Safety and Security

The Cruise Director has a big role to play when it comes to safety and security.

They need to be constantly kept up to date with regulations and rules so the job includes quite a few meetings!

The priority of all cruise lines is to keep the guests safe. All crew members are responsible for playing different roles in any emergency, and the Cruise Director is no different.

Cruise Directors Spend a Lot of Time Planning Pre-cruise

Cruise Directors are in charge of a large team and are therefore responsible for organising and planning upcoming events.

What Behind The Scenes Preparation Do You Make For a Cruise?

We plan the cruises about a month before. There’s still flexibility to change things but we have a nice structure so we know roughly what is happening and what people need to prepare for. For example, big events in America – like the Super Bowl require a lot of pre-planning.

Are There Cruise Directors on River Cruise Ships?

On most river cruise lines you will find a person who has a role similar to that of a Cruise Director. They’re not always called a ‘Cruise Director’ but will usually perform similar tasks.

On a river cruise, the Cruise Director may be supported by a small entertainment team or 1 or 2 other staff members.

Cruise Directors on river cruises will oversee the entire cruise operation and will be available to answer passengers’ questions at almost any time.

Unlike ocean ships, there aren’t really any staff areas on river cruise ships, which means that the Cruise Director is almost always available to passengers.

How do You Become a Cruise Director?

To become a Cruise Director most crew members start working at sea as a member of the entertainment team then work their way up to Assistant Cruise Director, then Cruise Director.

A person must have experience working at sea before becoming a Cruise Director. 

Working in industries such as hospitality, tourism, business, and management is also useful.

Some Cruise Directors will come from land-based jobs in hotels/restaurants before transferring into the cruise industry.

Cruise Directors work long hours and are away from home for months at a time so any potential Cruise Directors must be used to this way of life.

This is the reason why most Cruise Directors are recruited from within the cruise line.

What Skills do you Need to Become a Cruise Director?

Cruise directors have to be outgoing, fun-loving and have great organisational skills. They must have great communication skills and be happy to talk to guests all day, every day.

Organisation is a big part of being a cruise director, great time management skills are a must.

Cruise Directors must also be adaptable to the situation at sea can change with very little notice.

Unexpected sea days are one thing that cruise directors have to be prepared for .

On smaller cruise lines, like Azamara, the Cruise Director may be part of the entertainment team too.

When I recently sailed the cruise director had her own singing show. She was very good!

When I sailed on Azamara Onward, during one show the cruise director Eric SKATED around the dance floor in a sparkly dress – Yes, you read that right!

How do You Deal with Unexpected Sea Days?

I always made sure I had an emergency day planned out because we wouldn’t find out about an emergency sea day until maybe three hours before the guests did.

Problem-solving skills are also important as the cruise director is often responsible for implementing a ‘plan B’ when things don’t go to plan.

As a result, staying calm in stressful situations is important.

Getting a job as a cruise director is hard and competitive.

Once a person has a job as a Cruise Director they’ll usually work on different ships within the cruise line.

They may complete a contract on the Marella Discovery , then move to the Marella Explorer for example.

Some Cruise Directors may also change the company once they have been in the role for a while.

A cruise director must be able to function and thrive on a small amount of sleep (I wouldn’t be much good at this one!)

How Much Sleep Do You Get Per Night as a Cruise Director?

Sometimes you’re up really early in the morning, sometimes you’re up really late at night. Most of the officers actually have a nap in the afternoon, we call it “International Nap Time. “

If you call a senior officer in International Nap Time it better be an emergency because they really want their sleep. I never really went in for International Nap Time, because if I nap in the afternoon I don’t wake up again. So I would say about five to six hours sleep on average.

How Much Do Cruise Directors Make on Average?

The average cruise director earns between $56K and $70K per year.

The amount depends on experience. The cruise line they work for also affects how much a Cruise Director will earn.

Cruise Directors don’t have to pay for accommodation or meals onboard so they get to keep the majority of the money they make.

What Other Perks Do Cruise Directors Receive?

In addition to salary, Cruise Directors receive a number of other perks:

  • Accommodation on the ship free of charge
  • Meals onboard
  • (Usually) transport home and to the ship
  • Discounts, often on cruises and/or shops onboard

Cruise Directors live onboard during their contract so are usually able to save quite a high percentage of their salary.

I have met a couple of crew members who work onboard while saving money for a house deposit or other expenses. Many crew members also send home their salaries to support their famil ies

7 Questions with a Cruise Ship Hotel Director

An interview I did this summer with Gio, the Hotel Director aboard Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas.

Doug: Let’s talk about your background. How did you get from Italy to Majesty of the Seas?

Gio:  I am from Naples in Italy. I am a Hotel Director; I worked on Shoreside Hotels all my life. As well, I was happy and lucky to join Royal Caribbean a number of years ago. I have been delighted to work on a cruise line such as this one and the company itself.

Doug: How was it going from a land side hotel to sea?

Gio:  In general, the basic objective is the same that you know we have to take care of guests and we have to deliver the ‘wow’, and we have to do everything possible to ensure that the guests have a fantastic vacation.

Of course, onboard we call it a cruise vacation, and on land they call it land vacation. It is basically the same. The difference is here is that you know you are really on a floating hotel that encompasses a number of activities that we would have also on land. Here you go from one destination to another. In addition to having a fantastic hotel product, we also give the opportunity for our guests to visit other destinations.

I mean, here, we go to Nassau, we go to our own island Coco Cay. We go to Key West. In Europe on other ships that I have been on, and namely the Splendor of the Seas and so on. They go from Venice all the way to Ephesus in Turkey; passing by the beautiful Croatian Coast and touching onto the lovely Greek islands.  It is a spectacular way, really, for people to go on a vacation. They get the best service in the world onboard, as well as seeing all of the spectacular destinations.

Doug: That is one cool thing about a cruise vacation, is you unpack once and go anywhere you want to go. The ship takes you there; it is your floating hotel for 7 days, 3 days, 4 days, however long your trip is. Let’s talk about your job here, because when people think of Hotel Director, their mind automatically thinks of hotel room or managing the staterooms. Your job is far beyond that.

Gio: Yes indeed. Our main job really here, which is the main difference between land based hotels, is that you know you’re also responsible for the Evacuation Control Center. We are the ones if there is an emergency; you know we are the ones. The Hotel Director is the one that coordinates once the Master of the Vessel or the Captain gives the order to evacuate.   You are the one really with all of your team that, you know, assists the guests in gaining access and going to their muster stations.

Basically, the most important thing is the safety of the guests and crew alike. Then comes the other part of it which is the one that we have been trained for all of our lives, throughout our life. Namely food and beverage. We are responsible for the food and beverage operation. The housekeeping operation, and casino, and so on.

I mean the ship is, in a way, divided into three main sections: the Navigational Deck, Engine, which is really the motors and so on of the ship, then of course the services which I am responsible for; all services onboard.

Doug: It is a floating business. You are in charge of guest satisfaction. You are in charge of the food operations. You are in charge of making sure the ship makes money.

Gio: Onboard revenue, yes. Absolutely, I mean we are responsible to coordinate. We have some fantastic managers here onboard the Majesty of the Seas. Their main objective, really, is to deliver a fantastic service to our guests. Then, of course, you know we need to, like any business, an ongoing concern is a going concern. We try to assist the guests in whatever they need to be happy onboard.

Doug: Being a shareholder myself, I have to say you are doing a great job with financial right now. [laughs].

Gio: Thank you very much. Thank you very much.

Doug: How many crew are underneath you? How many people do you oversee?

Gio: Well, we have 860 approximate crew members onboard here. We have over 640 crew members that report directly through their division heads to me.

Doug: It was recently announced that this ship is no longer going to another cruise line, and that it’s staying with Royal Caribbean. Of course, this ship is the oldest ship in the fleet. I think it was launched in like 1992. It is going under a major renovation next April 2016 and then moving up to Cape Canaveral a little bit after that. Are you excited about the renovation? What are we going to see on here?

Gio: Absolutely, that is tremendous news really. The entire crew and some of our current anchor society members are very, very happy. I am also delighted of the news that Michael Bailey, our president, announced to us that we would not be closing down for business as a Royal Caribbean ship, the Majesty of the Seas. It will go through a very important renovation program, in May 2016.

We will have a couple of new venues for example like Sabor Taqueria Restaurant which is you know as you know a Mexican-flavored type of cuisine. Then we will have an Oriental-Japanese inspired food venue which is called Izumi on deck 11. We will also be installing some slides; water slides up on the upper deck in order to give to our families; the kids, which is really a family ship. They will have a number of fantastic additions. Of course, there is the room factor which is the high speed internet throughout the ship which we are very delighted about.

There will be soft furnishing changes and so on. You know the ship will be tremendous. We will add all of these facilities. We will also have the cartoon characters onboard. I think it is going to be spectacular.

Doug: Very nice. In closing here I want to ask you why should someone sail Majesty of the Seas in your opinion?

Gio: Well, Majesty of the Seas prides itself in the most spectacular personal service that our crew members are able to deliver. Primarily because, you know, they feel proud to be part of the Majesty of the Seas and the Royal family as a whole like we all are. That is, we are not the biggest ship in the fleet, but we definitely have a big heart.

"A male director had me in his office, by myself, and was asking me about this movie he wanted me for, and then, completely out of the blue, asked me this inappropriate question," she shared. 

"Honestly, I’m not even sure he’s still working anymore," she admitted, declining to name the individual or expand on his commentary. "It’s not something I like to reflect on."

"But I will say what he said was nothing to do with acting," the " Bring It On " star continued. "And it wasn’t that what he said was just ‘a bit off’. It was totally improper. And I remember sitting there and knowing that something was wrong, but with no idea what I should do." 

Dunst told her mother about the incident and says there weren't any more issues. 

"That was the end of it. She withdrew me from the process and told them I wouldn’t be making the film," she revealed.  

A representative for Dunst did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Who Will Pay for the Baltimore Bridge Collapse?

Disputes over liability and the cost of claims could take years for insurers to resolve and result in billions of dollars in payouts.

On the day the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed, President Biden said the federal government would pay the “ entire cost ” of rebuilding it, which some suggest could run to more than $1 billion. Washington will foot the bill so the bridge and nearby port can reopen “as soon as humanly possible,” he said.

The hope is that much of the cost will be recouped from insurers, but determining who is ultimately on the hook for the deadly disaster is set to become one of the messiest and most expensive disputes of its kind. Rebuilding the bridge, repairing the cargo ship that hit it and compensating companies for the disruption at one of the nation’s busiest ports may take years to resolve.

“We’re not going to wait,” said Mr. Biden, who plans to visit Baltimore on Friday to survey the damage.

The legal wrangling began this week when the shipowner, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and the ship manager, Synergy Marine, both based in Singapore, filed a petition in U.S. District Court to limit their liability to $43.7 million. They cited an 1851 law that allows a shipowner to cap financial damages mostly to the value of a ship after a crash, if the owner is determined not to have been at fault.

Claims against the ship’s owner and manager must be filed to the federal court in Baltimore by Sept. 24, a judge said.

Experts in maritime law and insurance said determining liability was particularly complex because of the many parties involved, from shipowners in Asia to insurers in Europe to companies around the world that move goods in and out of Baltimore. Numerous lawsuits are expected, and the six deaths caused by the disaster add a grim layer of complications.

“You can’t just necessarily settle with one party and make it go away,” said Franziska Arnold-Dwyer, a senior lecturer in insurance law at Queen Mary University of London.

Investigators are still determining what caused such a catastrophic failure on the cargo ship, the Dali; why the massive vessel appeared to lose power and propulsion before hitting the bridge; and whether negligence was involved. The answers will have implications for who is liable for damage that may cost insurers and reinsurers up to $4 billion, according to industry experts.

“You’re looking at historic, record losses” for maritime insurers, said Sean Kevelighan, chief executive of the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group. The higher estimates could exceed the roughly $1.5 billion paid out after the Costa Concordia crisis in 2012, when 32 people were killed as the cruise ship ran aground off the Italian island of Giglio .

Losses are accumulating, with the Port of Baltimore, a top destination for car shipments , largely closed. Officials said this week that they had opened a channel around the wreckage for limited traffic. A full reopening of the port is expected in late May .

Very little is known about the owner of Grace Ocean, a Japanese businessman named Yoshimasa Abe, except that he is very wealthy.

Most of his known wealth comes from his fleet of more than 50 vessels, including container ships, bulk carriers, tankers and refrigerated cargo ships. They are owned by two Singapore-based companies, Grace Ocean Private and Argosy Pte., that Mr. Abe controls through an offshore company. VesselsValue , which compiles shipping data, estimates that those ships, including the damaged Dali, are worth a combined $2.9 billion.

Shipowners often borrow large amounts of money to buy their fleets. There is little public information about Mr. Abe’s debts, but in 2010 Grace Ocean borrowed $250 million from Mitsui & Company, a Japanese trading firm.

Mr. Abe is also the majority owner of two Chinese shipyards on islands off the coast of Ningbo, according to Sayari and WireScreen , companies that compile and analyze corporate data. Combined, the two shipyards can repair more than 200 vessels a year.

It is unusual for foreign companies to control Chinese shipyards, especially in recent years as industry consolidation in the country has favored state-owned companies, said Matthew Funaiole, who has written about Chinese shipyards for the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. “There’s really not much space for there to be foreign ownership,” he said.

Among the 68 member companies, schools and associations focused on ship repair that belong to the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, a trade group, three are foreign-owned shipyards, of which Mr. Abe has a majority interest in two.

Mr. Abe did not respond to a request for an interview or answer written questions about his business. “Out of respect for the investigation and the legal process we will not be making additional public statements,” Jim Lawrence, a spokesman for the Dali’s management company and for Grace Ocean, said in an email. He confirmed earlier that Mr. Abe owned Grace Ocean Investment Limited, a company based in the British Virgin Islands that owns both Argosy Pte. and Grace Ocean Private.

If the shipowner is found liable, its insurer, a mutual association called Britannia P&I Club, will cover the first $10 million of claims, which could include coverage for loss of lives, debris removal, property damage and cargo damage. The Dali was carrying products including paper, U.S. soybeans destined for China and some hazardous materials, according to Concirrus, a marine insurance data provider, and DG Global, an agricultural exporter with goods on the ship.

Beyond $10 million, the 12 clubs including Britannia that make up the London-based International Group of P&I Clubs, which collectively insure about 90 percent of the world’s oceangoing tonnage, would share the cost of claims of up to $100 million. For claims above $100 million, dozens of reinsurers will cover costs up to roughly $3 billion.

The $3 billion figure is so widely known that it could become a target for businesses making damage claims. “There are some reinsurers expecting the worst,” said Hugo Chelton, a managing director at Howden Re, a reinsurance broker.

The global reinsurance industry ended last year with $670 billion in capital, according to Aon , an insurance broker. Though the bridge damage promises to be costly, it is not likely to be among the largest payouts reinsurers have faced recently. Hurricane Ian, which hit Florida in 2022, caused more than $50 billion in insured losses.

Sridhar Manyem, an analyst for AM Best, a ratings agency for insurers, said the potential losses from the bridge collapse did not seem large enough to do long-term damage to any insurers or reinsurers. “It should not affect their balance sheets,” he said.

While a significant share of the claims may be directed at the ship’s insurers, other businesses affected by the bridge and port closure could make claims on other policies to cover their losses, adding to the insured losses caused by the incident.

Scott Cowan, the president of International Longshoremen’s Association Local 333, the union representing Baltimore dockworkers, said on Tuesday that nearly 2,000 workers were still doing jobs at the port, like unloading cargo that arrived before the bridge collapsed.

Mr. Cowan said union leaders had asked for help from the federal and state governments. “The longer the channel’s closed and the longer we’re out, the bigger the problem is going to be,” he said. Many jobs at the port are considered daily hire jobs rather than full-time positions, so they will last only as long as work remains to be done.

Government funds for companies whose operations have been disrupted may not be fully recouped from insurers, said Oscar Seikaly, chief executive of NSI Insurance Group, an insurance broker.

In recent years, when Washington has stepped in with emergency aid after a commercial disaster, taxpayers have later largely recovered the costs, although the international scope of claims in the Baltimore bridge collapse will add complexity to the process.

Representative Dan Meuser, Republican of Pennsylvania, said he was outraged that Mr. Biden had immediately offered to use federal money to pay for the bridge’s reconstruction without considering other sources of funds, including from the owners and insurers of the Dali.

“Insurance payouts could potentially cover the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge without any taxpayer dollars being spent,” he said.

Robyn Patterson, a White House spokeswoman, said the responsible party or parties must be held accountable, but added, “We’re not waiting to get started on this critically important infrastructure project.”
