A day trip from Athens to Ancient Olympia might not be one of the first activities that come to mind when visiting the Greek capital.

However, even though Ancient Olympia is undoubtedly a less popular destination among some international travelers, it really is a must for those that are intrigued by the rich history of ancient Greece and who want to witness one of the most extraordinary historical places.

Located on the western coast of the Peloponnese, Ancient Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the location where this tradition came to life nearly three thousand years ago.

Its historical significance and marvelous natural beauty will make a day trip from Athens to Olympia one to remember from your next vacation in Greece.

What Is Olympia Greece Famous For?

Olympia is most known for being the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the home of the famous stadium where this longstanding tradition made its first appearance.

The Olympic Games, however, were much more than an athletic competition. Ancient Olympia was one of the most important religious sanctuaries in the country.

In fact, the Olympic Games themselves were part of broader religious festivities that were held in honor of Zeus and Pelops – the mythical king of Olympia.

Pilgrims would visit ancient Olympia every four years to worship the Olympian Gods and watch the games. It is said that for the duration of the festivals, the wars and conflicts throughout Greece would cease to respect what was later named the Olympic peace.

Getting to Ancient Olympia from Athens

The Peloponnese region generally is not very well connected with mainland Greece.

Nevertheless, this should not prevent you from planning an amazing day trip from Athens to Olympia.

Below, you will find all the information you need on how to get to Olympia and our recommendations for the best way to do it.

How Far Is Ancient Olympia From Athens?

The distance between the city center of Athens and the town of Olympia is approximately 300 kilometers (or about 186 miles ).

Whether you are planning to rent a car in Athens or drive your own car to reach Olympia, it is certainly the fastest way to get there. Besides, traveling by car will also allow you to visit some wonderful locations.

epidavros ancient theatre

There are two ways you can reach Ancient Olympia from Athens by car.

  • The highway connects Athens, Corinth, Patra, and Pyrgos. Olympia is located very close to Pyrgos and you will have no problems getting there by following the signs. This one is the fastest route. The highway is relatively well-maintained. The journey will take around 3,5 hours .
  • The highway connects Athens, Corinth, Tripoli, and Arcadia. If you choose to take this route, make sure to follow the signs and exit the highway just before you reach the end. This option will take you on a longer journey (about 5 hours ) since the road is not great, but the scenic views you can witness along the way are definitely worth it. If you have the time, you can also stop at Epidaurus and Mycenae.

Athens to Olympia by Bus

You can also travel from Athens to Ancient Olympia by bus. Local buses (or KTELs as they are called in Greece) depart from the bus terminal named Kifissos.

Unfortunately, Kifissos is not very easy to reach. You must take a taxi or a bus from the city center. Read our detailed guide on how to get around Athens to learn more.

Buses between Athens and Olympia usually run twice a day (yet we advise that you check the schedules beforehand) and the trip lasts a little less than 6 hours .

Niki Vlachou, the Olympia Guide

Travelers from all over the world use our services.

Having graduated in 1997 from Greece’s school for tour guides, I started offering guiding services for many areas all over Greece, in Greek, English and French. A few years afterwards, in 2002, I was lucky enough to start working and collaborating with Rick Steves. Eventually that led into meeting him in person and accompanying him to some of his travels throughout Greece, helping him update his travel guide books. Talking and collaborating with the "guru of traveling" could be nothing else but an inspiration and great lesson for me, but at the same time a big responsibility to carry out, since a lot of people contact me after his recommendation.

One of the highlights of my career was when BBC chose me to be the official Olympia expert in the live broadcasting of the ceremony of the lighting of the Olympic torch for the 2012 Olympics in London.

It is my privilege and pleasure to be able to guide visitors and show them my country that I love and respect. The Greek heritage and culture is very fascinating, and that is what I'm always trying to disseminate to my guests during the few hours that we share. Niki

It is my privilege and pleasure to be able to guide visitors and show them my country that I love and respect. The Greek heritage and culture is very fascinating, and that is what I'm always trying to disseminate to my guests during the few hours that we have to share.

What we offer, we offer local private and small group guided tours of the archaeological site and museum of ancient olympia..

Once in Olympia, the highlights to visit are the Archeological Museum (also called the New Museum) and the Ancient Olympic Games site.

In the Ancient Olympic Games site , among several other remains of important buildings, you will see the gymnasium and the palaestra, the round Philipeion, the workshop of Phidias where the gold and ivory statue of Zeus was built, the temples of Zeus and Hera, the altar where the Olympic torch is being lit in the modern days and last but not least the ancient Olympic stadium. The seating capacity was about 45000 people and this is where the ancient Greek athletes competed to win the precious olive wreath that was one of the greatest honors in ancient times. You will have the chance to actually run through the original track in the footsteps of the ancient Olympic victors.

In the archeological museum are housed all finds that were excavated from the archeological site. Bronze and clay offerings (tripods and figurines), armor, vases, the tools and cup from Phidias's workshop, the gorgeous Hermes by Praxiteles, the Nike by Paeonios and the very impressive and very well preserved classical statues from the pediments of the temple of Zeus, etc.

For the guided visit with a licensed tour guide of the site and the archeological museum you will need approximately 2,5 hours and then you can spend more time on your own to take pictures.

Alternatively, you could visit the archeological museum on your own after you enjoy the guided tour of the archeological site with your guide, for which you will need approximately 1,5 hour.

Our partners

We have a wide list of partners and associates., rated 4.9 out of 5, here's what our guests have to say.

After visiting sites in Greece both with and without a guide, I must say you are doing yourself a disservice (and wasting your time and money) if you forego the guide at ancient ruins. Having a family of readers and self-starters, I initially was ignorant about the benefits of a licensed guide for us. Having Niki take you through the museum and the archeological ruins transforms the experience COMPLETELY. She truly has the right stuff--personable, expert knowledge, frank, clear communicator--to make you understand what you are looking at.

Dana Sherry

Found Niki's company based on the review in Rick Steve's book. I booked a group tour in Ancient Olympia. It was fantastic. Small group, very personal service, excellent guide, informative, good price.

Niki is a brilliant guide who absolutely brought Olympia to life for us and our teenage son. She was able to answer every question (and there were plenty!) and we learnt far more than we ever could have done on our own or as part of a larger group. She was brilliant at engaging with a teenager and this made such a difference to him and us. As a result Ancient Olympia was the highlight of our two week trip to Greece. Thank you Niki.

MORE ABOUT OLYMPIA GREECE

One of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, Olympia is located on the western side of Peloponnese. This was the place where the ancient Olympic Games were organized and this is why an entire sanctuary to god Zeus was constructed next to the athletic installations to honor the gods before the beginning of the games. The spirit of the ancient Olympic Games inspired their revival in modern times. Next to the ancient site is a traditional village with lush greenery and many tourist facilities.

One of the most important archaeological sites of Greece, Olympia is located on the western side of Peloponnese, in mainland Greece. This was the place that gave birth to the ancient Olympic Games, where all Greek city-states would send their representatives. The Olympic Games were suspended in 394 AD by the Byzantine emperor Theodosius as a pagan ritual. They started again many centuries later, in 1896, after the idea of the French baron Pierre de Coubertin. The most characteristic sights of Olympia Greece are the Ancient Stadium, the temples of Zeus and Hera and certainly the Archaeological Museum, with impressive exhibits and findings from excavations in the region. Things to do in the region include hiking and cycling.

  • Discover the charming coastal town of Nafplio , visit a loom weaver and try your skills in a ceramics workshop .

  • Admire ancient Greece’s most sacred site, the Oracle of Delphi , discover a beautiful abandoned village and watch one of the last tanners and bellmakers of Greece at work.
  • Embark on an off-road adventure to reach a wonderful natural site with a hidden waterfall , where you’ll have a swim and a specially cooked Greek lunch just for you.
  • Discover local Greek life in the South , through different generations of people who open their homes and workshops .

Day 1: Mycenae & Nafplio tour

The fabled Homeric city of Mycenae , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of one of the oldest civilizations in the world, is where you’ll start your adventure into antiquity, by walking under the famed Lion Gate into ruins that are part history, part myth. While you’ll be literally walking in the steps of King Agamemnon, your expert guide will reveal every story, myth and legend that hide behind the imposing ruins of the citadel.

After visiting the site of Mycenae, you'll then head towards the historic seaside city of Nafplio, where a scrumptious lunch awaits you in one of the best tavernas in town only locals know of. This romantic, picturesque town, the old capital of modern Greece, is crowned by Venetian fortifications and embraced by a beautiful seafront.

You'll visit local craftspeople, including a potter and a weaver at work in their workshops, to discover how they carry the traditions of the past into the present. You’ll also see a number of other local crafts and goods and a confectionery where the traditional Greek almond cookies are still made the way they were generations ago.

From Nafplio, your trip will take you through the beautiful Peloponnesian countryside towards the site of ancient Olympia ; along the way, you’ll stop at a beautiful honey farm , where you'll learn the secrets of the world-renowned Greek honey firsthand from a working beekeeper. You’ll also see her mother making “diples”, a traditional dessert drizzled with honey, cooked just for you in an outdoor kitchen under the trees! You'll spend the night near Olympia.

Day 2: Ancient Olympia tour

The next morning belongs to ancient Olympia , the most important athletic, religious and political centre of the ancient Greek world. Here, your top-rated guide will let you into the secrets of the temples, the training area and the original stadium where the Olympic Games were born, and held for centuries. The visit of the archaeological Museum of Olympia is also not to be missed, as it holds world-class masterpieces and treasures like the breathtaking statue of Hermes and the infant Dionysus, by Praxiteles .

Children are always welcome on our ancient Olympia tour, and in case we have little participants, we'll have the opportunity to take part in some hands-on practice at archaeology, with an excavation simulation that is both educative and fun! Alternatively, we'll leave ancient Olympia to visit a nearby trend-setting olive farmer to discover revolutionary new techniques in homeodynamic olive oil production and to sample some incredibly tasting and top-quality olive oil.

Then it’s time for an unusual off-road adventure and an exciting lunch break: after an easy guided walk through a stunning gorge , you'll discover two impressive waterfalls where your lunch will be served, right by the river picnic-style, with homemade local specialties cooked by local women. For the bravest among you, you’ll have the chance to swim there too!

After leaving the waterfalls, you’ll travel to one of the most picturesque seaside villages of Greece, Galaxidi , to spend the night in a charmingly restored 19th century ‘arhontiko’ mansion with an enchanting courtyard.

Day 3: Delphi tour

We'll start the day tour of Delphi and the area by exploring Galaxidi, once a thriving port and home to some of the most powerful families of seafaring merchants in the Mediterranean. Then we'll head to the regional capital of Amfissa , where Greece's last handmade bell-maker will show you how livestock bells have been forged by hand in his family for generations; then you'll stroll through the cobbled streets of the old leather-tanning district. Here, in one of the last remaining tanning workshops in Europe, you’ll see what a tanner’s working life was, almost unchanged from a century ago up to today, and listen to the tanners’ stories – father and son – to understand what life is like today in this part of Greece.

You’ll then enjoy your lunch under the shade of the large plane tree in the town square, where you will taste local delicacies prepared for you by women of the village.

After lunch, we’re off to visit the site of Delphi , sacred oracle of the ancient Gods. There you’ll marvel at the beauty of the ancient monuments, including the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the Athenian Treasury . You’ll have plenty of time to soak in the magical scenery, after which it’ll be time to visit the Delphi museum , where some of the finest examples of ancient Greek art are on display – including the world-famous bronze statue of the Charioteer of Delphi .

The drive back to Athens concludes your Grand Tour of ancient Greece’s most celebrated landmarks, places of beauty and power, whose cultural influences are still felt today.

Ancient Olympia

Sunset in Ancient Olympia Greece

Nowhere in the world there is a site that has more relevance on today’s world than Olympia.

Introduction

Olympia is still in our lives with the lighting of the flame and the torch relay, ceremonies that every year will bring back memories of this tour.

Despite the damage by the earthquakes and the floods, the site is worth your visit. The setting is magical, making it the most beautiful major site in the Peloponnese. Both, the archaeological museum and the museum of the ancient Games are among the finest in Greece, making your visit to Olympia a must. There is no modern equivalent for ancient Olympia – a religious and at the same time an athletic centre. Men travelled from every part of the ancient World to compete in these Games and the winners became legends. Over 50,000 spectators came to watch the Games every four years and support the athletes. The area was buried under the alluvial deposits of the two rivers until its discovery in 1852. Since then, millions of people visit Olympia every year and admire its wealth and importance in antiquity. A visit to the original site of the Olympic Games is a moving experience. Running in the original stadium is an unforgettable one. If your visit to Greece is short and does not allow you to join a longer tour, take our ONE DAY TOUR TO OLYMPIA and visit the huge, but walkable, sacred ancient site.

Ancient Olympia has cultivated ideals. The importance of taking part in the Olympics was a great honour, being an Olympic winner was even greater. The ancient Greeks visited the sanctuary of Olympia every 4 years. Join one of our tours and visit it once in your lifetime.

Join one of the tours below and visit the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia: * 2 days Argolis (Mycenae, Nafplion, Epidaurus & Olympia) * 3 days classical tour to Epidaurus, Nafplion, Mycenae, Olympia & Delphi * 4 days Classical tour as above & an extra day to visit Meteora * 4 day Monday’s special classical tour, o/night in Nafplion * 5 day Monday’s special classical tour & Meteora,  o/night in Nafplion * 5 days Classical tour as above & an extra day to visit Meteora * 7 day Grand tour of Greece

The history of Olympia

In the beautiful valley of the river Alpheios, in the Peloponnese, lies the most celebrated sanctuary of ancient Greece. Dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods, it sprawls over the southwest foot of Mount Kronion, at the confluence of the Alpheios and the Kladeos rivers, in a lush, green landscape.

Olympia became the most important religious and athletic centre in Greece.

Its fame rests upon the Olympic Games, which was held every four years to honour Zeus. The origin of the cult and of the festival went back many centuries. Local myths concerning the famous King Pelops, and the river Alpheios, betray the close ties between the sanctuary and both the East and West.

The earliest finds at Olympia are on the foot of Mt Kronio, where the first sanctuaries and prehistoric cults were established. A large number of pottery sherds of the Final Neolithic period (4000 BC) were found on the north bank of the stadium. Traces of occupation of the three periods of the Bronze Age were identified in the greater area of the Altis. A great tumulus of the Early Helladic II period (2800-2300 BC) was discovered in the lower strata of the Pelopion, while several apsidal structures belong to the Early Helladic III period (2150-2000 BC).

It is believed that in 1200 BC the region of Olympia was settled by Aetolians under the leadership of Oxylos, who founded the state of Elis. The first sanctuary dedicated to local and Pan-Hellenic deities was established towards the end of the Mycenaean period. The Altis, the sacred enclosure with its shady oaks, planes, pines, poplars and olive-trees, was first formed during the 10th and 9th c.BC, when the cult of Zeus was probably established. Olympia was subsequently devoted exclusively to worship and for many centuries had no other structures except for the Altis, a walled precinct containing sacrificial altars and the tumulus of the Pelopion. The numerous votive offerings, mostly figurines, bronze cauldrons and tripods were placed outdoors, on trees and altars. The first figurines representing Zeus, the master of the sanctuary, date to the Geometric period.

In 776 BC, Iphitos, king of Elis, Kleosthenes of Pisa and Lykourgos of Sparta reorganized the Olympic Games in honour of Zeus and instituted the sacred ekecheiria, or truce. Soon the quadrennial festival acquired a national character. The great development of the sanctuary began in the Archaic period as shown by the thousands of votive offerings – weapons, figurines, cauldrons etc – dating from this period. This is when the first monumental buildings were constructed – the temple of Hera, the Prytaneion, the Bouleuterion, the treasuries and the first stadium.

The sanctuary continued to flourish into the Classical period, when the enormous temple of Zeus (470-456 BC) and several other buildings (baths, stoas, treasuries, ancillary buildings) were erected, and the stadium moved to the east of its Archaic predecessors, outside the Altis. The countless statues and precious offerings of this period were unfortunately lost, as the sanctuary was pillaged several times in antiquity and especially under Roman rule. In the Hellenistic period the construction of lay buildings, such as the gymnasium and palaestra, continued, while in Roman times several existing buildings were refurbished and new ones built, including hot baths, luxurious mansions and an aqueduct. Many of the sanctuary’s treasures were removed and used for the decoration of Roman villas.

The sanctuary continued to function during the first years of Christian rule under Constantine the Great. The last Olympic Games were held in 393 AD, before an edict of Theodosius I prohibited all pagan festivals. In 426 BC Theodosius II ordered the destruction of the sanctuary. In the mid-fifth century AD a small settlement developed over the ancient ruins and the Workshop of Pheidias was transformed into a Christian church. In 522 and 551 the ruins were devastated anew by earthquakes, the Temple of Zeus being partially buried. In subsequent centuries the Alpheios and the Kladeos overflowed and together with landslips from Mount Kronios buried the site deep in mud and sand. Olympia remained forgotten under a layer of debris 5-7 metres deep. The area was dubbed Antilalos and it is not until 1766 that the ancient sanctuary was re-discovered.

In 1829 the French Scientific Expedition of the Peloponnese partially excavated the Temple of Zeus, taking several fragments of the pediments to the Museum du Louvre. Systematic excavation began by the German Archaeological Institute in 1875 and continues to the present. During this last decade U. Sinn, Prof. of Classical Archaeology at the University of Wurzburg and member of the German Archaeological Institute, and his team researched the southwest building, while Dr. H. Kyrieleis, former director of the German Archaeological Institute, and his team excavated the Prehistoric buildings of the sanctuary. Several monuments of the site are currently under conservation and restoration.

The archaeological site of Olympia

Olympia, site of the ancient Olympic Games. Hand-colored halftone reproduction of a 19th-century illustration

The archaeological site of Olympia includes the sanctuary of Zeus and the many buildings erected around it, such as athletic premises used for the preparation and celebration of the Olympic Games, administrative buildings and other lay buildings and monuments. The Altis, the sacred enclosure and core of the sanctuary, with its temples, cult buildings and treasuries, occupies the centre of the site. It is surrounded by a peribolos, or enclosure wall, which in the late fourth century BC had three gates on its west side and two on the south, and is bordered on the east by the Echo Stoa, which separates the sacred precinct from the stadium. The enclosure wall was extended in Roman times and two monumental entrances were created on its west side.

The Classical Temple of Zeus and the earlier Temple of Hera dominate the Altis. East of the Heraion is the Metro?n, a temple dedicated to Cybele, the mother of the gods, and behind this, on the foot of Mount Kronios, a row of treasuries dedicated by Greek cities and colonies. To their west lies the Nymphaion, a splendid fountain dedicated by Herodes Atticus. South of the Heraion and over the remains of the prehistoric settlement of Olympia is the Pelopion, a funerary monument commemorating the hero Pelops. Also within the Altis are the Prytaneion, the see of the sanctuary officials, and the Philippeion, an elegant circular building dedicated by Philip II, king of Macedon. Southeast of the Heraion was the great altar of Zeus, a most important monument entirely made of ashes and therefore now completely lost. The remaining space inside the Altis was filled with numerous altars and statues of gods, heroes and Olympic winners dedicated by Greek cities or wealthy individuals, such as the Nike of Paionios.

Outside the sacred precinct of the Altis, to its south, are the Voulefterion and the South Stoa, the southernmost building of the greater sanctuary and its main entrance from the south. West of the Altis and separated from it by the Sacred Road is a series of buildings for the sanctuary personnel, the athletes and the distinguished visitors: the gymnasium and palaestra, exercise grounds, the Workshop of Pheidias which in Late Antiquity was transformed into a Christian church, the Greek baths with their swimming pool, the Roman hot baths, the Theokoleion or priests’ residence, the Leonidaion or officials’ quarters, and the Roman hostels.

East of the Altis lies the stadium where the Olympic Games were held. The stadium of Olympia, where the ancient Olympic Games were held, and the massive temple of Zeus, are some of the attractions of the site. The best way to get the most out of your visit is to actually race in the stadium like the athletes used to do and feel the vibes! South of the stadium was the hippodrome, of which no trace remains as it was swept away by the Alpheios river. South of the hippodrome is a group of mansions and baths, including the famous House of Nero, built by the emperor for his stay at Olympia during his participation in the games.

In the video Prof. Hale speaks about the sanctuary and the history of Olympia, a place that is still in our lives.

Olympia cannot be visited as a day trip organized on a tour bus. It is outside the mileage and working hours of a bus driver and the only way to visit it in a day trip is by hiring a self-driven car or a taxi, or by taking our private day trip, preferably with the extra expense of a local guide. There are a lot of amusing myths and interesting stories about ancient Olympia and the Olympic Games that the tour guide will talk about.

Possibly in Italy or in Turkey this would be just a "nice to have" tool, since most of the archeological sites are almost intact, but in Greece, at least in Olympia and in Delos if it was available, the Olympia back in time glasses are a must, for kids and adults. Highly recommended, without them I suppose most of the visitors would be disappointed by the visit and would appreciate only the museum, which is clearly enjoiable in itself. I would recommend also the Back in Time initiative to arrange the same tool for the other Greek archeological sites. Read more Written May 17, 2023

  • traviss301 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A Whole New Perspective on an Old Place The VR headsets provide a unique way to see what Olympia may have looked like. The audio was informative, but I do wish there was a little more information. Each location has audio to go along with it and most of the sites have an option to listed to more information, which is great for families with kids who want different amounts of detail (our 4 kids range from 10-17). It held the interest of our 10 year-old and slowed her down so the rest of us weren't rushed through. But if you really want to dig into the details, I'd suggest a live guide. The staff at the store were very friendly and made sure everything was working for us before we took off. We also showed up earlier than we had reserved the VR headsets and it wasn't a problem--we were able to pick them up and begin early. I hope they continue building and expanding on the idea; my kids preferred the VR headsets to the iPads at the Acropolis. Read more Written April 15, 2023
  • Hope022 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles It made such a difference. It was great! We rented the Visual/Audio guide in Olympia and what a difference it made while we visited the excavations. As you approach each site, the earpiece you wear begins to explain what the place was like in Ancient Greece and the glasses actually show you (in motion) athletes exercising, the Statue of Zeus being built in the original workshop, entire temples, and you can even hear the echo of your voice in the ancient echo temple. Fabulous! Read more Written October 27, 2022

  • jennid710 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Do this tour! Fantastic! Whole heartedly recommend this tour. It allows you to see reconstructions of what the site would have looked like, and provides information about what you are seeing. The headsets are very easy to use and the staff at the pick up point were lovely. It really was so simple! Be aware, the pick up site is not at the Olympia site. However, it’s very close (a 3-4 minute drive away) and we did still need to buy a ticket to access the site. Read more Written August 7, 2022
  • BubblesDuck 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly Recommend If you’re on the fence about renting these headsets, do yourself a favor and do it. Like so many other ancient ruins throughout Greece, it’s hard to envision what the structures looked like when they were built, not to mention the size and scale. The VR headsets solve this problem. Were it not for these headsets, our stop in Olympia would have likely been disappointing. The VR headsets not only guided you along a GPS-enabled route that provided audio info, the 360-degree visuals helped show what the area looked like when the buildings were standing. We were unsure what the visuals might be, but we were pleasantly surprised that they were true-to-life and weren’t cartoon-y. A number of other visitors within the ruins were interested in the goggles, as they were frustrated and having trouble envisioning what each structure looked like. The goggles are purchased in town, prior to going to the site. The goggles were so helpful that they helped us envision all of the ruins at our next stop on our trip in Delphi. The owners of the business were great. We didn’t know we needed to reserve the headsets if we wanted to start our self-guided your at 8 a.m. We called, and the owners dropped what they were doing and scootered to the stop to open up and accommodate us! Looking forward to seeing this company expand to other historical sites throughout Europe! Read more Written July 17, 2022

We added the “Olympia back in time” VR headset tour which really improved the experience. You could stand in front of each ruin and see what it looked like in ancient time, including athletes running around. The VR shop is in town so stop there first to pick up and head to site. • Katherine W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent way to tour an ancient site I would like to thank this company for an excellent experience and request that they hurry to offer the same at all major Greek archeological sites! We later on our trip went to explore ancient messini and commented all the way around how wonderful it would be if only we could have 3d glasses there as well. It adds another level of interest- seeing the colours and heights and noise of how the Greeks would have lived then. We particularly enjoyed seeing the complete buildings in relation to one another around the site too at Olympia. We look forward to this company's expansion. 5 star.
