How to Change the Safari Download Location in iOS 13 and iPadOS

The introduction of a built-in download manager for Safari in iOS 13 and iPadOS was a welcome move by Apple. Finally, you can download files without messing around with the Share Sheet or relying on third-party browsers or file managers.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados Featured

However, the default location where Safari’s download manager copies your files over to can be a concern. All downloads are saved to iCloud Drive, which means that any files you download are also re-uploaded to iCloud. But thankfully, you don’t have to stick with the same location indefinitely.

Whether you are simply looking to change folders in iCloud Drive or want to download your files directly to local storage instead, you can do that quite easily. And there’s even the possibility to use third-party cloud-storage services in place of iCloud Drive, which is just fantastic.

Switch Folders in iCloud Drive

By default, Safari downloads your files to a folder labeled ‘Downloads’ within the root of iCloud Drive. However, you can switch the downloads location to another folder in iCloud with minimum fuss.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and then tap Safari.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 1

Step 2: Scroll down to the General section, and then tap Downloads. On the subsequent screen, tap Other.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 3

Step 3: Select a new location within iCloud Drive. However, it’s always a good idea to create a sub-folder within the selected location to prevent confusion over downloaded files with any other items further down the road.

Tap the folder-shaped icon to the upper-right corner of the screen to insert a sub-folder. After you are done naming the folder, tap Done.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 5

Step 4: Tap Done again to save your changes, and then exit the Settings app.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 17

Subsequent downloads will now be saved to the newly specified location in iCloud Drive. To move any existing files within the older Downloads folder to the new location, use the Files app .

Use Local Storage on iPhone or iPad

Alternatively, you can use the local storage on your iPhone or iPad to store Safari downloads. That will stop your device from uploading files back to the cloud, and works as a neat alternative if iCloud Drive is running low on storage . Furthermore, re-uploading sizable downloads to the cloud can take a toll on certain network connection speeds. Hence, keeping your downloads purely in local storage can also help resolve that issue.

To switch the download location to local storage, tap Safari in the Settings app, tap Downloads and then select On My iPhone/On My iPad.

By default, Safari’s download manager will automatically create a Downloads folder within On My iPhone/iPad. However, you can switch to a different pre-existing folder, or even create a new one by using the Other option.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 9

Once again, you need to make use of the Files app to move your older downloads from iCloud Drive to the new location should you want to.

Move to Alternative Cloud Storage Service

Rather than saving to iCloud Drive or directly to your iPhone or iPad, you can instead make use of major third-party cloud storage providers such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive to serve as Safari’s go-to location for downloads.

Provided that you’ve already installed and signed into the relevant cloud storage apps on your iPhone or iPad, you then need to activate them via the Files app . After that, you can specify any one of them to work as Safari’s default download.

Step 1: Open the Files app, and then tap the ellipsis (three-dot) icon to the upper-right corner of the screen.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 16

Step 2: On the menu that shows up subsequently, tap Edit. Next, activate installed cloud storages by turning on the switches located alongside each listed service.

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 12

Step 3: Pick a cloud storage service to work as Safari’s new download location by visiting the Safari Downloads screen (Settings app > Safari > Downloads).

Safari Change Download Location Ios 13 Ipados 15

By default, Safari’s download manager will create a new location within the selected storage service and automatically label it as ‘Downloads.’ However, you can switch to a different folder or create one easily using the Other option just like with iCloud Drive.

Download Like a Pro

Safari’s downloads manager was a much-needed addition to both the iPhone and the iPad. A functionality that’s long been overdue, but better later than never. And kudos to Apple for giving us the flexibility to choose easily from among multiple storage locations.

So, what’s your preferred location for downloads? Do drop in a comment and let us know.

Next up: Getting tired of using Safari all the time? Spice up your experience online with these nine alternative browsers instead.

Google Drive not Syncing (Mac)

Google Drive not Syncing (Mac)

safari download google drive

There most likely causes of Google Drive not syncing on Mac is some kind of error in the synchronization process or a bug in the app. There are many possible causes for syncing errors that could cause Google Drive to not work on Mac, but dealing with such an error is typically very easy.

Google Drive is a very useful app that rarely experiences any significant errors or other issues. Even if you are having any difficulties with it, resolving the problem would typically take nothing more than a restart of the app or of your Mac. Still, if you are having any issues with Google Drive on your Mac, be sure to read the following lines to learn how to take care of them.

To force Google Drive to sync on Mac, you need to first sign use your Google account to sign in to the Drive for desktop. Next, click on the Google Drive icon located in the Menu bar and select the gear icon to access the “Preferences” menu. From there, choose the sync mode that fits your needs.

If Google Drive on your Mac is not syncing, it may be due to insufficient storage space. Check if you have enough storage space in your Google Drive account to ensure that the folder can sync your files properly. This is a common reason why the Google Drive folder may stop syncing on Mac.

If your Google Drive is not syncing, try restarting the sync process by exiting Google Drive from the system tray icon and then reopening it from the Start menu. This can help Google Drive find unsynced files and sync files that are missing.

If some of your files did not get properly synced in Google Drive, you can force a re-sync by clicking ‘Start sync now’ in the Drive menu in the top-right. This will ensure all your files are synced properly.

Google Drive not Working on Mac

The reason Google Drive is not working could be due to a problem in the syncing process, but note that Google Drive won’t directly open if you click on its Dock icon. To open Google Drive, use its menu bar icon from the top like we’ve shown below.

If you haven’t worked with this app before, opening Google Drive can be a bit confusing at first because double-clicking its icon in the Application folder or clicking its icon in the Dock will open the app, but won’t automatically show you the Google Drive interface on your screen. To see the Google Drive app interface, you need to click the app’s icon that should appear in the menu bar at the top. From there, you can click the Settings menu, go to Preferences , and make changes to the way Google Drive functions on your Mac.

safari download google drive

If you already knew this and the problem you are facing is that Google Drive won’t start on your Mac, or it won’t let you access the files you’ve stored in it through Finder, then you may need to reinstall the app or perform any of the other fix methods we will show you in a bit.

Google Drive not working on Mac Fix

Possible methods to fix this issue are to restart Google Drive, delete its cached files, and reinstall it. Another commonly used fix for when Google Drive is not working on Mac is to run its Google Drive script.

Use the following suggested fixes in order to resolve your Google Drive problem.

Restart Google Drive

  • Select the Google Drive icon shown in the menu bar.

safari download google drive

  • Restart your Mac – once the machine boots back up, Google Drive should start automatically, unless you’ve changed its settings so that it doesn’t launch on startup.

safari download google drive

Delete Google Drive cached files

  • Press Command + Space to open Spotlight and copy-paste in it the following line: ~/Library/Application Support/ .

safari download google drive

  • Restart the computer and check if the Google Drive problem is now solved.

Reinstall Google Drive

  • First, you need to quit Google Drive – click its icon from the menu bar, click the Settings button, and select Quit .
  • Next, go to your Applications folder and drag and drop the Google Drive icon to the Trash/Bin, after which empty the Trash/Bin.
  • Restart your Mac, open Safari, and go to Google.
  • Type Download Google Drive, click Download Drive for Desktop, and download the Google Drive .dmg file.
  • Open the file when it downloads, double-click on the .pkg in the window that opens, and follow the prompts to install Google Drive.

Run the Google Drive script

  • Open Finder and go to the Applications folder.
  • Find the Google Drive icon, select it, and right-click it.

safari download google drive

  • Restart your Mac and see if Google Drive is working normally now.

Disconnect and reconnect your account

  • Select the Google Drive icon in the menu bar and click the gear icon .

Google Drive Preferences

  • Next, you should be automatically prompted to sign in to Google Drive. If the prompt doesn’t appear, click the Google Drive icon in the menu bar, click the Sign in button, and proceed to sign in with your Google account.

Check the Date and Time settings

For some reason, incorrect date and time settings could sometimes cause Google Drive to be out of sync. Here’s how to fix this:

  • Open the Apple Logo menu from the top-left and click System Preferences .

Time & Date

  • See if the Set Date and Time Automatically option is enabled and if it’s not, enable it now and restart your Mac.

How do I reconnect my Mac to Google Drive?

To reconnect your Mac to Google Drive, you can try restarting the Google Drive app, your Mac, and/or your router, if the problem is related to failed syncing. You can also try to reconnect your Mac to Google Drive by reinstalling the app.

Your Mac should automatically connect to Google Drive, so if there’s a problem with that, you should first try to simply restart Google Drive, as shown above. If this doesn’t work, you can also try restarting your Mac. It may also be a good idea to check your Internet connection, because an issue with it may be what’s preventing your Mac from connecting to Google Drive. If you are using Wi-Fi, you can try shutting down your router, waiting for a couple of seconds, and then turning it back on to see if your connection to the Internet comes back. If this doesn’t help, and you are certain that the problem is related to your connection to the web, you should contact your Internet provider for further assistance.

Hi, I am having the same problem, and I am sure is a synchronization issue. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with macOS Monterey V12.3.1, and I have Google Drive for Desktop. It use to work very well, but I am having problems because the folders that I put “Available offline”, have many missing elements, and they appear if I go to the Google Drive web, and open the missing folder or file on the web, then immediately the file appears in my Google Drive for Desktop. This has never happened before and this problem started about 2 months ago. Any suggestion I will appreciate. Regards Juan

Hi Juan, we will do some more testing and try to replicate the problem, thank you for the feedback.

I have this problem as well. It becomes frustrating working with a team and we do not see files after knowing they have been put in a folder. Only going to Google Drive web version and navigate to the folder or file, does it show up on the desktop version. iMac mid 2015 with macOS Monterey V12.6

On an M1 MacBook Air running macOS 12.5.1 I was not able to launch Google Drive. Icon would just not show up in the menu bar, and nothing would show up in the Activity Monitor either. Following the steps in this article I ran the script and immediately saw the issue. Google Drive was not able to create the DriveFS folder in my user library application support folder, but did it in the system library application support folder instead. I created that folder manually and Google Drive started working. Hope this helps someone else.

Deleting that Library folder worked for me. (Monterrey Desktop.)

I”d restarted and reinstalled GD multiple times with no success. Thank you!

I have a 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 chip and Google Drive use to appear on my menu bar. Now when I go to the menu bar, it’s disappeared,. I’ve tried rebooting, reloading, but can’t seem to get GDrive online.

Hi Martina, My Google Drive had not been working, I think since macOS took over the folder locations. I have two Google Drives corresponding to two accounts. There was no Drive icon showing in the menu bar. Among other things I tried starting Google Drive manually from the applications folder. It then flashed on and off in the menu bar several times before disappearing. Anyway your suggestion from above to “Delete Google Drive cached files” mostly solved the problem. Everything is working now as expected though I have had one of the accounts, but not the other one, crash. That resulted in an Apple window explaining the reason for the crash (I didn’t note the details). Everything is working again so maybe it will be good from now on. One other observation is that when the location change occurred the behavior seemed to change from mirroring to streaming without any input from me. Is this normal? Lastly, great job on the article. Don’t know how you figured all this out. Also, wording is unambiguous, a rarity now for technical articles.

Thank you Martina – your instructions are the clearest and most relevant I’ve found.

My Google Drive for desktop always works for my own personal gmail account, but when connecting to my work account through another gmail address, the sync doesnt load, so the files do not load. I tried everything in the article with no change. Any ideas please? The work account used to work until a month ago. It loads the files on the browser but fails to sync to the desktop on my Imac Pro running MacOSVentura 13.1.

safari download google drive

Google Drive announced today that it has moved the drive location on my iMac to ‘Locations’. Fine, expect now when I open that location all I get is the spinning wheel and “Loading…”.

All my files are synced, nothing is available offline. I have tried deleting the cache and uninstalling/reinstalling Google Drive but no joy. It’s totally boned.

If anyone can help I would be really grateful.

safari download google drive

Dan, I’m having exactly the same problem after Google Drive changed the drive location too… can’t access any of my files but everything is synced. Have you figured anything out?

safari download google drive

Thanks for your article, I have a Macbook Pro 14″ 2021 but and am experiencing many problems with syncing, this explanation helps partly, but the drive is not syncing properly yet. It is striking that people at my team with an older Mac sync well

Where to Find Downloaded Files in Safari on a Mac and How to Manage Them

After downloading a file, it's not always easy to find where it saved. Here's how to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

While browsing the web in Safari, it’s common to need to download files from different websites. But sometimes it can be a challenge to find where these Safari downloads are saved.

Below are several ways to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

How to Download Files Using Safari

There are different ways to save items from Safari to your Mac , depending on the type of item you want to save. While some items in webpages can’t be downloaded, files, images, software, and apps often come with a dedicated download button. Otherwise, Control-click or two-finger tap an item to save or download it.

It’s best not to download software or apps if they aren’t from a trusted source.

Where to Find Safari Downloads on a Mac

Unless you’ve chosen otherwise, items that you’ve downloaded from Safari automatically go to your Downloads folder. To find this, open Finder and click Downloads from the sidebar or press Cmd + Option + L .

You can change where your downloaded files save, if you want:

  • Head to Safari > Preferences .
  • Click the General tab. Go to File download location , then choose from the popup. Select Ask for each download if you want to be in more control of each download.
  • If you want to select a specific destination, click Other and select your desired folder.

File Download Location Options on Safari Preferences

Use the Downloads Button in Safari

Quickly access your downloads in Safari by clicking the Downloads button, a downward arrow enclosed in a circle icon on the top-right of the Safari window. Note that this won’t appear unless you’ve recently downloaded an item.

Downloads List on Safari

Open the Downloads Stack in the Dock

Another way to immediately access your downloaded files is through the Dock. Your recent downloads are often found on the right side of the Dock in a stack. Hover over it to preview the contents or click to expand it.

Open the Downloads Folder in Finder

As we already mentioned, you can also find your Safari downloads using Finder. This is a valuable utility to locate items on our Mac. Simply click the magnifying button on your menu bar and type "downloads," or go to your Dock and click Finder to open the Finder window.

You can usually find the Downloads folder in the sidebar, under Favorites.

How to Manage Your Safari Downloads

There are several ways to manage your in-progress or completed downloads in Safari. To perform these actions, open the Downloads menu in Safari itself. Here’s what you can do:

  • Pause Downloads: If you’re currently downloading, click the stop button beside the file name to pause the download, then click the resume button to resume it again.

Magnifying glass in Downloads

  • Remove a downloaded item: If you want to remove a single item from the list, Control-click the item and select Remove from List . You can also remove all your recently downloaded items by clicking Clear in the top right of the popup.

Remove Download from List on Safari

By default, Safari automatically deletes downloaded items after a day. If you want to change this:

  • Go to Safari > Preferences .
  • Click General , then go to Remove download list items . Choose from After one day , When Safari quits , Upon successful download , or Manually .

Manage Your Safari Downloads

There is a lot of content you can download on the web, and simply knowing how to download it is usually half the battle. But once you’ve done that, you can use the tips in this guide to find and manage your Safari downloads with ease, even customizing your download preferences to get fuller control over where your files save and when they get deleted.

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I fixed my issue by clearing all cookies (not the history) on both Safari and Chrome.

Google Chrome works fine and so does Firefox so I'm assuming it's not an OS bug but a Safari bug.

How to download from Google Drive

All you need to know about downloading from Google Drive

Google Drive

Google Drive: How to download files online

Google drive: how to download files online without an account, google drive: how to download files on windows, google drive: how to download files on mac, google drive: how to download files on android, google drive: how to download files on iphone and ipad.

Google Drive has experienced huge success thanks to the fact that it offers a generous 15GB allowance for free, and is integrated with a number of other Google services like Google Maps and YouTube .

It’s also the standard cloud storage choice for Android users, among a number of workplaces and educational establishments, many of which have issued Google-built Chromebooks as their hardware of choice.

Your reasons for wanting to download something from Google could vary, and you may not even have a Google account, but that shouldn’t be a problem as you won’t need to create one to download something that someone with a Google account has sent you.

  • Read our full, in-depth Google Drive review to learn more about the platform

If you’re logged into your account and you want to download your own content or something that someone has shared with you, there’s a simple process that can be accessed in a few different ways.

It starts with selecting the file you want to download. If you want to download more than one item that are next to each other, you can click and drag your mouse to highlight them all. If you want to cherry-pick specific files, you can use the Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) keys and hit each one that you want.

You can either right-click and press download, or press the ‘three dots’ icon and press download. A single file will automatically download to your computer, but if you select more than one, Google Drive will begin to zip them to help reduce their overall size and, as such, speed up the download - you can check this progress in the bottom right corner. Once complete, the zipped folder containing multiple documents will start to download.

If you don’t have a Google account but you want to make a copy of something that someone has sent you, you’ll need to make sure that they’ve given you the right permission to download the file.

How you download the file will depend on what sort of file it is. For view-only files like PDFs and images, you’ll find a ‘Download’ button in the upper right-hand side corner. For Google-compatible files like Docs, you’ll need to find ‘Download’ in the ‘File’ menu.

If you’ve been given access to an entire folder, you can either download files individually or use the ‘Download all’ shortcut button.

If you prefer not to have to navigate to your browser every time and log in to your Google account, then the desktop client may be better suited to your needs. After downloading it, you’ll need to sign in just once and then it’ll handle all the syncing for you.

Your Google Drive files will actually appear in your File Explorer windows just as if they’re stored on your computer, and you can choose to either set up a specific folder on your hard drive or create a new drive for the Internet-connected account. The latter provides the best clarity if you’re unsure which documents belong where.

You don’t need to download files if you’re using the desktop client so long as you have Internet access, because any changes you make will be automatically updated. That’s the key benefit of opting to use the software rather than relying on an Internet browser .

If you’re expecting to be without Internet connection, for example you’re preparing for a flight, then you can select certain files or folders for offline access by right-clicking on them. Any changes you make will be updated once you regain Internet connection. Online-only files are displayed with a cloud graphic overlaying the thumbnail; anything that you’ve made available for offline use will remove this cloud icon.

The Mac software works very much like its Windows counterpart, and after setting it up your files will reside in Finder. You can choose whether to have them in a folder with your other local work, or to have Google Drive presented as an external drive to help distinguish things.

The same applies in terms of Internet connectivity: any changes you make are updated automatically and the desktop client is automatically set up to be online-only to save space on your machine. You can choose to right-click individual files and folders for offline access if you need it, though. These will be made clear by a small green tick displayed on the thumbnail; online-only files don’t have a graphic overlaid on their thumbnail. This can be confusing for anybody using both Windows and Mac because they’re both slightly different, so it’s something worth paying attention to before you find yourself without a connection.

On a smartphone or tablet, select the file(s) you want to download - note that you cannot download folders, but you can download their entire contents individually. To select more than one file, press and hold.

The next step is to press the ‘three dots’ menu then ‘Download’. You can choose to save it where you want and share it accordingly.

If you don’t need to download a copy of the file and you just want to make it available offline, then there is a separate option to do this from that same ‘three dots’ menu.

The process for iPhones and iPads is exactly the same as it is for Android devices though there are some styling tweaks that make each version look slightly different.

Still, selecting your file(s) and downloading or marking them as available offline in the ‘three dots’ menu remains.

How to download files and webpages directly to google drive in chrome.

We’ve all downloaded files from the web to our computer.

Quick Links

Install and set up the save to google drive extension, download a file directly to google drive, save a webpage directly to google drive.

We’ve all downloaded files from the web to our computer. However, if you’d rather download files directly to your Google Drive account, there’s an extension for Google Chrome that allows you to do just that.

Google's Save to Google Drive extension allows you to save downloaded files directly to your Google Drive account, as well as save webpages to Google Drive as images, HTML files, or even Google documents. If you’re using the Google Drive desktop client for Windows or macOS, you can save downloaded files directly to your local Google Drive folder and they will be uploaded to your Google Drive account automatically. However, using the Google Drive client uses space on your computer, which isn't ideal if you're low on space. The Save to Google Drive extension can also be useful If you’re using Ubuntu Linux, which does not have an official Google Drive client.

NOTE: The Save to Google Drive extension saves files to the Google account you are signed in to in Chrome. So, switch to the Google Chrome profile that corresponds to the Google Drive account you want to save files to before using this extension.

We’ll show you how to install, set up, and use the Save to Google Drive extension in Chrome for Windows, but it works the same way on Chrome for macOS and for most common Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu.

To install the extension, visit the Save to Google Drive extension page in Chrome and click “Add to Chrome”.

01_clicking_add_to_chrome

A confirmation dialog box displays asking if you want to add Save to Google Drive. Click “Add extension”.

02_clicking_add_extension_dialog

A button for the Save to Google Drive extension is added to the toolbar to the right of the address bar.

04_selecting_options

The options for the extension display on a new tab. By default, the extension is set to save files to the main My Drive folder in your Google Drive account. To change this, click “Change destination folder” in the Save to Folder section.

05_clicking_change_destination_folder

On the Select a Save to Folder dialog box, navigate to and select the folder in which you want to save files by default and click “Select”.

NOTE: You can still change the Save to Folder for each file you save to Google Drive. If you want to save most files to the same location, this setting makes it quicker to save files to your predefined location.

06_select_a_save_to_folder

The Save to Google Drive extension also allows you to save a webpage as an image of the entire page (default), an image of the visible page, raw HTML source, a web archive (MHTML), or even as a Google Document. In the HTML pages section, select the format you want to use when saving webpages. If you’re downloading Microsoft Office files or comma-separated files, you can automatically convert these files to Google Docs format, by checking the “Convert saved link to Google editor format” box.

07_save_page_as_options

Once you’ve made your selections, click the “X” on the Options tab to close it.

08_closing_options

To save a downloadable file to your Google Drive account, right-click on a download link and select “Save Link to Google Drive” from the popup menu.

16_selecting_save_link_to_google_drive

The first time you save a file or webpage to Google Drive using the extension, a dialog box displays asking you to allow the extension to access and use the information listed. Click “Allow”.

10_clicking_allow

The Save to Google Drive dialog box displays and the downloaded file is saved to your Google Drive account either to the main My Drive location or to the folder you specified.

17_saving_file_dialog

You can also change the name of the downloaded file to whatever you want by clicking “Rename”.

18_clicking_rename_for_file

19_clicking_apply_for_renaming_file

Click “Close” to close the Save to Google Drive dialog box.

20_clicking_close_for_file

21_file_in_google_drive

To save a webpage to your Google Drive account in the format you chose on the Options page, click the “Save to Google Drive” button on the toolbar.

Once the file is uploaded, you can click “Rename” if you want to change the file name.

12_clicking_rename_for_web_page

Change the name of the file (leaving the file extension alone) in the Rename box and click “Apply”.

13_clicking_apply_for_web_page_rename

You can change the location where the file will be saved in your Google Drive account by clicking the “(change)” link, which opens the Options tab again. If you click “(change)”, the Save to Google Drive dialog box automatically closes. If you’re not changing the location, click “Close”.

14_clicking_close_for_saved_page

Due to security restrictions, when saving webpages using the Save to Google Drive extension, you cannot save chrome:// pages, such as chrome://extensions or chrome://flags, or Chrome Web Store pages.
