Organize your tabs with Tab Groups in Safari on iPhone

Create a new Tab Group

Touch and hold a tab, then choose Move to Tab Group.

Tap New Tab Group, enter a name, then tap Move.

Reorder tabs in a Tab Group

Touch and hold a tab in the Tab Group.

In the menu that appears, tap Arrange Tabs By, then choose an option.

Or, just drag the tab to where you want it.

Rename a Tab Group

Tap Rename, enter a name, then tap Save.

Pin a tab at the top of a Tab Group

You can customize your Tab Groups with pinned tabs in each group. The pinned tab stays at the top of the Tab Group.

Touch and hold the tab you want to pin.

In the menu that appears, tap Pin Tab.

If you’re using Safari but you’re not using Tab Groups, well, it’s time to change that.

Tab Groups, as the name implies, allows you to group a selection of tabs together and essentially set them aside for future use. For example, if you have a bunch of tabs you use for work and a bunch of tabs you use after work, you can cordon these tabs off into batches so that they don’t get in each other’s way. You can use your work tabs at work and, when you’re finished, swap them for your “after work” tabs with just one click.

You might also have different Tab Groups for different assignments at work or different school projects. Folks who share a computer might have different Tab Groups for each user. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s how to create a tab group in Safari.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on macOS

There are a couple of ways to do this. The easiest method is to make a group out of whatever tabs you currently have open. If you’re about to close Safari but think you might need to pick up where you left off when you open it later, throwing your tabs into a group can give you some peace of mind.

You can also create a tab group from scratch if there is a batch of tabs you think you might want to use later. This is a bit more time-consuming but will allow you to be more selective about which tabs to include.

To create a tab group from existing tabs

• In Safari, click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s on the left side, next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
• Pick New Tab Group With [X] Tabs .
• In the left column, look for the Tab Group subhead. Name your tab group, then press Enter.

To create a tab group from scratch

• Click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
• Pick New Empty Tab Group .
• Name your tab group, then press enter.
• Right-click a tab you want to add to the group, click Move to Tab Group , and select the tab group you want. Alternatively, you can click and drag the tab to your group on the left side.

To open your new tab group

• Click on that down arrow again.
• Click on the tab group you want.

Once you’ve got a group up and running, it’s not set in stone. You can adjust the makeup of a given tab group by clicking the arrow to its right in the sidebar’s tab group list. Right-click any tab that comes up, and you’ll have the option to remove it from the group, remove all tabs that aren’t it from the group, or move it to a different group,

You can also click the three dots just next to the arrow if you want to rename, delete, or share the group, along with other options.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on iOS

Tab Groups can sync between iOS and macOS devices, so if you create one on your Mac computer, you can still access it on your iPhone. Nevertheless, if it’s more convenient for you to create these from the Safari app on iOS, you can certainly do so.

• In the Safari app, click the tabs button on the bottom right. (It’s the one with two squares.)
• Press and hold a tab you want to add, then pick Move to Tab Group .
• Select New Tab Group .
• Name your new group.

Tab Groups allow you to collect several tabs into a set. For example, if you're researching buying a new TV, you might create a set called "TV research" that contains reviews, product pages, online retail listings, and so on.

Tab Groups don't just live on your iPhone. They're synced between any device running iOS 15 , iPadOS 15 or macOS 12 Monterey . Make a change on one device, and it's reflected across all those other places.

How to create a Tab Group in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tab button in the right corner of the location bar. 

2. Tap the middle of the bar , where it lists the number of open tabs. 

3. Tap New Empty Tab Group to create a new blank tab group or, if you want to group all the tabs you currently have open, tap New Tab Group from X Tabs (where X is the number of tabs you currently have open). In this instance, we'll create a new tab group.

4. Alternatively, when you're viewing the tab bar, tap and hold on the number of open tabs and choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group from X Tabs from the pop-up menu that appears. 

5. Enter the name you'd like to use for the Tab Group and tap OK.

2. Tap the middle of the bar, where it lists the current Tab Group. 

3. Tap the Edit button in the top right corner of the pop-up. 

4. Tap and hold on the drag handles to the far right of the Tab Group , and drag it into the position you'd like it in.

5. Tap Done.

Master tab grouping in Safari and never lose one.

Safari now features tab groups that organize your browser tabs in groups you can label and move around. It helps you reduce tab clutter, similar to how tab groups work on Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome . Here's how to use them.

To use tab groups in Safari, you need to be running Safari 15 or later. You can update Safari using System Preferences.

When you're ready, launch Safari on your Mac and open your favorite websites in different tabs. Next, click the "Show Sidebar" icon in the top-left corner of Safari to reveal the Sidebar.

In the Sidebar, you'll see the number of Tabs open at the top. Right-click the button showing the number of tabs open at the top of the sidebar and select "New Tab Group with [#] Tabs" to add all the open tabs into a single new tab group.

All the tabs will appear in a new "Untitled" tab group on the Sidebar. Right-click "Untitled" and select "Rename." Give a new name to the tab group and hit Return to save it.

Next, click the "Hide Sidebar" button in the top-left corner of Safari to close the Sidebar.

Safari will show you the tab group label at the top, next to the "Show Sidebar" button.

To move a tab into a new or existing tab group, right-click on the particular tab, select "Move to Tab Group," and choose an existing tab group name or a new tab group.

You can switch between the tab groups by clicking on the tab label in the top-left corner of Safari.

To add a new tab in any group, you can press Command+T to open a new tab or click the "+" (plus) button in the top-right corner of Safari. You can re-arrange the order of the tab groups by dragging them above or below the existing groups on the Sidebar.

To delete a tab from a tab group, hit the Tabs Overview button in the top-right corner (four squares) to see the snapshot of tabs in a group. Then, click the "X" in the top-left of the tab preview thumbnail to remove it from the group.

Tab Groups are a helpful feature for organizing and managing tabs instead of leaving several of them open. You can also  copy the links of the open tabs in a tab group to save them for later before you close all the tabs at once . Happy Browsing!

• Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
• Tap the tab button on the bottom toolbar . It looks like two cascading squares.
• Tap where it says X Tabs ("X" being the number of tabs open in this group), with an arrow pointing down . This will bring up the Tab Groups menu .

• Tap New Empty Tab Group .
• Give your new tab group a name .

Now, any new tab that you open will be in this new tab group until you switch groups. And tab groups are synced across all of your devices via iCloud, so you can pick up easily where you left off across your iPhone, iPad , and Mac.

You should make sure that you are quick to drag it because if you long-press the tab group, it will just bring up the menu to rename or delete it.

When you can't remember all of the tabs that are open in a tab group, you can view everything that is in a certain tab group just by viewing that group.

• While you're on a webpage , tap the tab button on the toolbar .
• To see what other tabs are open in other tab groups, select the tab group you want to view tabs for.
• You'll get to see a thumbnail of each tab in a tab group once it's selected.

How to use tab groups in Safari

With MacOS Monterey , Apple has updated Safari’s tab management system with a new look, more customization options, and the ability to form tab groups for managing especially busy online sessions.

How to create tab groups on iOS

We’re big fans of these changes, as they make work and research easier to manage over the long term, but the extra features will take some practice to get comfortable using. Here’s how to get started with tab groups so you can make the most of them.

What You Need

Mac computer, Safari browser

First, make sure everything is updated and you are using the latest version of Safari.

Step 1: Collect the sites you want to save.

Open Safari and start opening new tabs to visit the websites you want to collect in a group. If you are doing research on Einstein, for example, you would want to collect a number of tabs including biographies, common Einstein myths, a list of his major theories and works, and so on.

Don’t leave any blank tabs when you are finished. There doesn’t appear to be a limit to how many tabs you can put in a group, but at a certain point, too many browser tabs can become cumbersome — you may want to keep it under 20 or so.

Step 2: Turn your tabs into a tab group.

When ready, select File from Safari’s upper-left menu, then look for the option that says New Tab Group With X Tabs , where X is the number of tabs you currently have open. Select it.

Now you can name your tab — something like “Einstein,” for example — and it will automatically be saved. Any work you do in this Safari window will still count as the tab group, and the group will be updated accordingly. Close your Safari window to save your tab group for later.

When you want to access the tab group again, pop open Safari and select the Sidebar icon, just to the left of the Favorites menu. This drop-down menu will include all the groups you have created under Tab Groups. When you select the group you want, Safari will open all tabs in a single window for you to use and change Favorites to the name of your tab group.

Note the Small Grid icon to the right when you hover over a tab group — this opens up all tabs in a grid view that makes it easier to scan for the webpage you had in mind.

Alternative: Create a new tab group from scratch

You don’t have to collect your tabs first before turning them into a tab group. If you prefer to set up and name your tab group ahead of time, this is easy to do as well.

Open Safari, select File in the upper-left corner, and select New Empty Tab Group . Now, any tabs that you create while you work will be automatically added to the tab group you have made.

Step 3: Rename or delete your tabs.

Don’t let your tab groups get cluttered over time! Instead, reuse them by renaming them, or delete them when you are finished with that particular project or plan. Open Safari, then select the Sidebar icon right next to the Favorites menu.

Hover over the Tab Group , then right-click to open a menu with several choices. Here, you will see an option to Rename the group or to Delete it entirely when you are finished. Keep these options handy when your tab groups start to pile up.

Step 4: Share tab groups as needed.

In the Sidebar menu, when you right-click on a Tab Group , you’ll notice another option that says Copy Links . Choose this, and it will allow you to paste an outline-like section with the tab group as the title and a bulleted list of the web links. This makes it easy to share or email the tab group as needed.

We’ve been talking about the MacOS version of tab groups, but there’s good news: With iOS 15 updates, iPhones and iPads have very similar capabilities. Safari’s syncing capabilities will also stay in place, allowing you to access tabs you created on your Mac on other devices.

If you want to create tab groups on iOS, long-press the Tab button on Safari and select the arrow for Move to Tab Group to open the option for Tab Groups.

3. Select New Empty Tab Group to start a Tab Group with nothing in it, or New Tab Group from X Tabs to put all your currently open tabs into a new Group.

4. Give your Tab Group a name, and then press Save .

5. The new Group will appear. You can switch between your Tab Groups by tapping the Group's name at the bottom of the screen again.

To delete a Tab Group or edit its name, open the Tab Groups page and swipe left on the Group you want to change.

How to make Tab Groups in Safari on your Mac

Just like on your iPhone, you'll need to make sure that your Mac is updated to at least Big Sur 11.6 , and Safari is updated to at least Version 15.0 . You can check Safari's current version by opening it, clicking Safari in the top-left corner of your screen, and then selecting About Safari .

1. Open Safari and click the downward-pointing arrow in the top-left corner of the page.

2. In the drop-down menu, select either New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group with X Tabs .

3. The sidebar will open, and give you the chance to name your new Tab Group. 

You can open or close the sidebar by clicking the sidebar icon at the top-left of the page. This menu is where you can delete or edit the Tab Groups, or start a new one by clicking the square plus sign icon .

Alternatively, you can start Tab Groups by clicking the Safari option in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

How to use Tab Groups in Safari on iPhone and iPad

The Tab Groups in Safari allows you to manage your tabs better. You can create new tab groups for a specific research, move tabs between groups, rename it, and more. Here’s how to do all of this on your iPhone or iPad.

1) Launch Safari on your Apple device.

2) You’ll notice the address bar is now at the bottom of the app. Open a webpage, and tap the tabs icon  located next to the address bar.

3) In the page that appears, tap on the middle button to see the Tab Groups. If you opened a webpage and then hit the tabs icon, then you should see 1 Tab . If you started from the Start page, then you’ll see the option read Start Page .

4) You can now create a New Empty Tab Group , open a Private tab , or create a New Tab Group from 1 Tab .

5) When you create a new Tab Group, you can name then accordingly. To rename the group, press and hold the tab group name to bring up the menu with the Rename option. Access the tab groups menu by tapping the tabs icon on the main page. You can also delete the group from this menu, and copy links .

6) To add new tabs to this group, simply tap on the tabs button and hit the ‘+’ icon. All new tabs will be added to the group you just created.

7) You are also able to move tabs between tab groups. To do this, press and hold on a tab in a group and tap the Move to Tab Group option. This menu even lets you arrange tabs by title or by website .

8) If you want to close all the tabs in a group, then press and hold the tabs button in an open webpage and select Close all tabs .

As you can see, there’s a lot you can do with the new Tab Groups feature on iOS and iPadOS 15. You can move between different tab groups by swiping left or right on the address bar.

Use Safari tab groups on Mac

On Mac, Tab Groups work similarly to how they do on iOS, however, accessing the groups is a little different. Here’s how to use Safari Tab Groups on Mac.

1) Open Safari on your Mac computer.

2) Click on the Sidebar on the top left corner. You should now see the option to create a New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group with 1 Tab .

3) You can name the new tab group, and if you want to rename it, you’ll have to right-click on the tab group from the Sidebar . You can also delete the group from this menu.

4) Tab Groups are available from the Sidebar , and you can click and hold a group to move it around.

5) To move a tab between groups, right-click on the tab and click Move to Tab Group .

6) If you want to view all the tabs in a group on a single page, then right-click on the Tap Group from the Sidebar and select Show Tab Overview .

Sure, Tab Groups aren’t precisely a never-seen-before feature, but it’s great news that we can finally use it in Safari instead of relying on other browsers.

What’s great about this feature is that you can use it on Mac, iPad, and even your iPhone! And thanks to iCloud, anything you do on one device will automatically appear on all your other devices as well.

Before you jump into Tab Groups, here are a few things you should know first.

What Are Tab Groups?

The name is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s a new Safari feature that lets you create and group many different tabs into one batch.

They’re basically folders where you can store tabs and access them later.

That way, you can load up your shopping websites whenever you want or create a tab group for your work setup, so you don’t have to bother reopening the same tabs every time.

This feature is exclusive to Safari on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey. As soon as you update your device, you’ll be able to access tab groups in Safari,  amongst other cool features .

Where Can You Find Your Tab Groups

On Mac, your Tab Groups will be automatically saved on the sidebar menu. All you need to do is tap on the sidebar button on the top left corner of your Safari Browser. You’ll see a list of your Tab Groups, your Bookmarks, and your Reading list too.

If you’re on iPhone, you can see your Tab Groups after you press the Tab bar at the bottom of your screen. You might need to tap the  Tabs button  on the bottom right corner of your screen if you’re on a website.

How to Create a New Tab Group

There are many ways for you to create a new Tab Group, and it doesn’t matter if you’re on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can create brand new tab groups or create a tab group with tabs you already have.

How to Create New Tab Groups on Mac

• Open  Safari .
• Click the down arrow on the top left corner, next to the sidebar button.
• Click  New Empty Tab Group  or  New Tab Group with x tabs .
• This will automatically open the sidebar menu. If you want,  add a name  to your Tab Group, but it’s not necessary.

How to Create New Tab Groups on iPhone or iPad

• Open the  Safari  app.
• Tap on  the Tab bar  at the bottom of your screen.
• Tap  New Empty Tab Group  or  New Tab Group from Tabs .
• On mobile, you will be required to add a new name to your tab group.
• After you enter a name, tap  Save .

And that’s it. You just created your first Tab Group. Remember that if you choose New Tab Group with x tabs, all the tabs that you have open on Safari will become part of the same Tab Group.

How to Move a Tab to a Different Tab Group

Adding tabs to your Tab Group is simple: All you need to do is open a new tab when you’re in the Tab Group you want. But what if you made a mistake and you want to move it to a different Tab Group? Well, it’s just as easy. Here’s what you need to do:

How to Move a Tab to a Different Tab Group on Mac

• Choose which tab you want to move. 
• Right-click  or  Control-click  on the tab you want to move.
• Select  Move to Tab Group .
• Select the Tab Group where you want to move your tab. You can also create a new group by click  New Tab Group .

How to Move a Tab to a Different Tab Group on iPhone or iPad

• Long press  the tab you want to move.
• Tap on  Move to Tab Group .
• Select the Tab Group where you want to move your tab. You can also create a new group by clicking  New Tab Group .

Your tab will magically disappear from the group you’re in, and it’ll be moved to the new group you selected.

If you want your tab out of any group, select  Start Page  after selecting  Move to Tab Group .

How to Delete a Tab Groups

What’s great about Tab Groups is that you can use them for unique occasions and then get rid of them. You can sneakily plan an anniversary date with your partner and then get rid of the Tab Group after you’re done. 

How to Delete Tab Groups on Mac

• Click the  Sidebar  button on the top left corner of Safari to open the Sidebar menu. 
• Under  Tab Groups , locate the Tab Group you want to get rid of.
• Right-click  or  Control-click  the Tab Group.
• Select  Delete .

How to Delete Tab Groups on iPhone or iPad

• Tap  the Tab bar  at the bottom of your screen.
• Press and hold  the Tab Group you want to delete.
• Tap on  Delete .

Be careful when you delete a Tab Group. You’ll notice that there’s no confirmation option; as soon as you click delete, your Tab Group is gone, and all the tabs in that tab group will be closed automatically.

As of right now, there is no way to undo it, so you’ll need to make sure you’re not deleting a tab that has something important.

In iOS 16, Apple has made several enhancements to its Safari browser, including some new features when working within Tab Groups. One of these is the ability to select webpages from your bookmarks so that they appear as Favorites in the Start Page of any new tab that you open within a specific Tab Group. Here's how it works.

When it comes to adding Favorites to specific Tab Groups, you'll first need to have some webpages in your bookmarks, and have created at least one Tab Group . Then you can follow these steps.

• In the Safari tab browser, make sure your Tab Group is active by tapping the middle of the tab bar at the bottom of the screen and then selecting its name.
• Next, tap the plus ( + ) icon in the bottom-left corner to open a new tab showing a Start Page.

• Toggle on the switch next to Tab Group Favorites , then tap the X in the top-right corner to close the Customize Start Page menu.

It happens more often than you think, and most of us have difficulty keeping track of all the open tabs. The solution to this problem is to organize these tabs. You can do so by creating Tab Groups in Safari.

How to set up a Safari Tab Group on Mac

How to move tab to another tab group, view, open, and edit tab groups in safari on mac, sync tab groups across devices.

If you’re just getting started with your work, I recommend you create an empty Tab Group. However, you can also create a Tab Group that will store all the open websites in one Tab Group. Mentioned below are steps both for creating an empty Tab Group and also creating a Tab Group by selecting all the active tabs.

Create an Empty Tab Group

• Open Safari on Mac.

• Select the New Empty Tab Group option.

And, Done. You’ve just created a new Empty Tab Group. You can create multiple such Tab Groups to streamline your work.  

Create Tab Groups of all active tabs

• Open Safari on Mac. 
• Select the New Tab Group with 4 Tabs option. 

And, Done. All your active tabs have been moved to a single Tab Group. If you’d like to send one tab to another Tab Group, read along.

Moving tabs from one Tab Group to another is as easy as ABC. Just follow the steps mentioned below, and I’m certain none of you will have any trouble moving an active tab from one Tab Group to another.

• Right Click/ Control-Click the tab you want to move to another Tab Group.
• Select the Move to Tab Group option.

And, Done. You’ve sent the active tab to be a part of another Tab Group. You can head to the Tab Group and continue your work there.  

So, you’ve just created Tab Groups but have no idea where to access all the created Tab Groups from? I’ve got you covered. Read along.  

There are two methods to Open Tab Groups. With the latter method, you can not only access the Tab Groups but also copy links, rearrange, rename, delete, etc., Tab Group.  

Method 1:  

• Click on the small dropdown icon at the top left corner of your screen just beside the Toolbar icon. The dropdown menu will have all the Tab Groups you’ve created.

Method 2: 

• Click on the Toolbar icon located beside the window control buttons.
• Under Tab Groups , you can find all the Tab Groups you created.
• Right Click/ Control-Click the Tab Group to rename or delete the Tab Group, or you can also copy links of tabs in the Tab Group.

All the tabs open on your Mac in Safari will sync across all your Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, etc. To enable syncing of tabs across all your devices, follow the steps mentioned below,  

• Ensure you’ve signed in to all your Apple devices with the same Apple ID.  
• Turn on Safari in iCloud Preferences.
• Also, enable two-factor authentication on all your Apple devices.

Click the Toolbar icon → Right-click/ Control-click the Tab Group → Click Rename → Done.  

Click the Toolbar icon → Right-click/ Control-click Delete → Done.  

Click the Toolbar icon → Right-click/ Control-click Copy Links → Done. (A list consisting of all the links of the tabs in the group will be copied to your clipboard)

Back in 2003, it was almost unthinkable that Apple would bring out its own web browser, as it was a time when Internet Explorer on Mac was the best choice. However, twenty years on and Safari has become the web browser to go to when you load up macOS.

Features such as iCloud tabs enable you to open one window on your iPhone for example and load it up on your Mac. Apple is constantly bringing out new features involving tabs, such as Tab Groups in macOS Monterey.

These enable you to group up a bunch of sites in tabs, and you can also share them with friends and family. With macOS Ventura , there are even more options available that will help to boost your browsing management - with this in mind, here are a few steps on how best to use tab groups in Safari.

• macOS Ventura

1. Create a tab group from current tabs

You can create tab groups using tabs you already have open, or create an empty group and add tabs as required; we'll look at the first option first. Open the Safari sidebar and click the New Tab Group button -- this features two squares and a + symbol.

Select the New Tab Group With x Tabs option ( x will be replaced with the number of tabs you have open. Type a name for your tab group and press Enter .

2. Create a tab group with a selection of tabs

Of course, you may not want to add all of your open tabs to a group, preferring instead to create a group from just a few of them. Make sure that you not only have the Safari sidebar open, but also that the list of open tabs is visible -- just click the > button to expand the list.

Select the tabs you want to transform into a tab group by clicking then while holding Command . Click the ... button next to the first tab you selected, and click Move to Tab Group > New Tab Group before typing a name and pressing Enter .

3. Adding tabs to existing groups

When you have created groups, it is easy to open new tabs within that group and those sites will automatically be part of that group. But you may also want to move a tab that isn't in a group into an existing group or even move a tab from one group to another.

Hold Control while clicking a tab in the Safari sidebar -- or tap with two fingers -- and select Move to Tab Group before clicking the name of the tab group you want to move it to.

4. Sharing tab groups

If you are using a tab group to research potential hotels to use for your next trip, to check out different holiday destinations, or even for a work project, you may want to share a collection of tabs with someone else.

Hover over the title of a tab group in the sidebar, and click the ... button. From the menu that pops into view, select Share Tab Group and then choose the Messages option before searching for a contact and sending them an invitation.

5. Pinning within tab groups

You are very likely familiar with the idea of pinning tabs in Safari so that you can not only easily access your most frequently used sites, but also reduce the size of the tabs in question.

It's also possible to pin tabs within tab groups, helping to keep things neatly organized. It works in the same way as normal pinning. Within a tab group, Command -click a tab or tab with two fingers and select the Pin Tab option. When pinned, you cannot move a tab to another group until you unpin it.

6. Moving tabs between tab groups

If you have two or more tab groups on the go at the same time, it is all too easy to open a new tab within the wrong group. Thankfully, it is very easy to move tabs between groups. You simply need to Command -click / tap with two fingers on a tab beneath the address bar, or in entry for a tab in the sidebar. Form the menu that appears, select the Move to Tab Group option followed by the name of the group you want to move it to.

7. Using Tabs Groups with a Focus

If you have different tab groups configured for work and home projects, you can use them in conjunction with macOS Ventura's Focus feature. Click the Apple menu, select System Settings and move to the Focus section.

Select or create a focus and then click the Add Filter button in the Focus Filter section. Click the Safari / Set Tab Group option, click Choose then select the tab group you want to link to the chosen Focus. Click Add , and you're done.

8. Customizing Tab Groups

You can easily change the order in which tabs appear in a group by dragging and dropping them into your preferred positions. It is also possible to customize the start page of a tab group by selecting an appropriate background image.

Select a tab group in the sidebar in Safari, click the Bookmarks menu and select Show Start Page . Click the Options button on the lower-right of the screen and you can then choose between one of the built-in images, or select one of our own.

There is a lot to love about Tab Groups in Safari, but the feature is not the only way you can keep on top of tabs in Apple's desktop web browser. You could consider switching to a different browser, of course -- the likes of Firefox and Chrome offer their own individual methods of tab management. But if you would prefer to stick with Safari, there are some extensions that can help you out.

The first extension that's worth taking a look at is Tab Space . Although not free, it is incredibly cheap and gives you great options such as the ability to tag tab sessions, and then open them in the future with a single click. Also noteworthy is OneTab , a free Safari extension that lets you convert a number of tabs into a list which can then be re-opened individually or as a group.

How to Use Shared Tab Groups in Safari

Planning a trip or buying furniture and need to share a lot of links back and forth? Use the new shared tab groups feature in Safari instead.

Apple introduced major updates to Messages this year in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura. Features like Edit or Undo sent messages and SharePlay in Messages have blown up.

But one feature that has gone rather under the radar is Collaboration using the Messages app. The new OS updates make collaborating in various apps like Keynote, Notes, Pages, Numbers, Finder, Reminders, etc. extremely easy. One of the key apps that Collaboration has come to is Safari.

Collaboration in Safari builds upon a feature introduced last year that became an instant hit – Tab Groups. Safari now lets you share these grouped tabs with your friends, family, colleagues, etc., and collaborate on them. Let’s decipher what it all means and how you can use it.

What are Shared Tab Groups in Safari?

Before diving into what Shared Tab Groups mean, let’s have a crash course on Tab Groups to jog your memory if you haven’t been using them prominently until now. Introduced in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey, tab groups do exactly what it sounds like.

The feature allows you to group certain tabs together so you can manage the clutter of open tabs in Safari. Simply put, using these groups, you can manage different tabs, say work and personal, and put them in neat, little boxes, metaphorically speaking.

So, instead of managing different open tabs in different windows of Safari – which isn’t even an option on the iPhone – you can organize them in different groups. Switching between these tabs is then a matter of clicking a tab group.

Now, with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura, you can even share these tab groups with other people. You know how sometimes when you’re planning a vacation with friends, remodeling your home, or shopping for furniture with your partner, you’re always sharing links back and forth? Shared Tab Groups save that hassle of always having to send links.

You can simply add the link to the tab group you’re sharing with someone, and they can easily check it out. And if they come across a link that they’d like to share with you? They can do the same – add it to the tab group you shared with them. They can also remove a tab from the group.

The shared tab groups will sync across your Apple devices using the same Apple ID.

Using the latest collaboration controls, you can also chat in messages or start a FaceTime call right in Safari. And if someone adds something to the tab group, you’ll get updates in the Messages app, as well.

You also get live updates and see which tabs the other people are looking at. Let’s dive right in and see how to use it.

How to Share a Tab Group?

You can share a tab group from either your iPhone using iOS 16 or Mac using macOS Ventura. And the people you’re sharing the tab group with also need to be on the latest iOS or macOS version on their Apple devices to be able to join.

Sharing a Tab Group from iPhone

On your iPhone, open Safari. Then, tap the ‘Tabs’ icon from the bottom-right corner of the screen.

The tabs will open in a grid view. Tap the downward arrow next to ‘N Tabs’ from the toolbar.

From the overlay menu that appears, tap the tab group you want to share to open it.

When the tab group is in the grid view, tap the ‘Share’ icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

The Share Sheet will open. You’ll see that it has the option ‘Collaborate’ written there. And unlike other apps like Notes, where you can switch to ‘Send a Copy’, that option isn’t available here. Also, Messages is the only app available in the Share Sheet for shared tab groups. Select ‘Messages’ from the Share Sheet to share the invitation to the tab group.

The ‘New Message’ screen will open in an overlay window and the invitation to collaborate on the tab group will load in the message box. Enter the name of the recipient(s) you want to invite in the ‘To:’ field and tap the ‘Send’ button to send the invitation.

To view the collaboration pop-up, tap the ‘Collaboration’ icon in the top-right corner when the tabs are in the grid view.

Sharing a Tab Group from Mac

The process for sharing a tab group is the same for the Mac. The only difference is in how you access the tab group.

Open Safari on your Mac, and click the ‘Sidebar button’ from the left of the address bar if it isn’t already open.

Then, click the tab group you want to share.

Click the ‘Share’ icon at the right of the address bar.

From the pop-up menu, either click the conversation from Siri suggestions if it is available there or click the ‘Messages’ icon to share the tab group.

The Messages app will open and the invitation for the tab group will automatically load in the message box. Enter the names of the contacts in the ‘To:’ field and send the message to begin the collaboration.

You can view the collaboration pop-over from the ‘Collaboration’ icon in the right corner of the address bar.

Using the Shared Tab Groups

Once you’ve sent the invitation using Messages, the collaboration will kick off immediately at your end. When the other person taps the invite, you’ll get a notification telling you that they joined.

Using the shared tab groups is then a walk in the park. All collaboration controls will be available from the collaboration pop-over. You can see the tab(s) other participants are currently viewing as their contact photo will appear on the tab they’re viewing.

All of you can add and remove tabs from the shared tab group as you would normally do from a tab group.

You can also start a chat or FaceTime call in Safari. Open the Collaboration pop-over and click the ‘Message’ icon to chat while viewing the tabs. Messages will open in an overlay window over Safari so it’s easy to get back to Safari after you’re done chatting. To start a FaceTime call, click the ‘Audio’ or ‘Video’ options. You can also share your screen in the FaceTime video call to collaborate more closely on the shared tabs.

To manage access for the shared tab group, like removing someone, or stop sharing it altogether, click the option for ‘Manage Shared Tab Group’ from the collaboration pop-over.

Shared tab groups are a fresh breath of air and something that utilizes the potential of tab groups. You’ll do well to note that you can only share tab groups for collaboration. If you go on to share a simple tab, it’ll send that person the link the old-fashioned way.
