The ultimate day trip from Seville to Tangier

Daytrip to Morocco

Day Trip from Seville to Tangier

Many facets of the culture of southern Spain come from the Moors. As such, a day trip from Seville to Tangier will only serve to deepen your understanding of this culture, as well as provide you with an adventure! The day starts with a drive through the beautiful Andalusian countryside, passing by Alcornocales Natural Park before arriving in the port town of Tarifa . Morocco is so close to here, that even on a cloudy day you can see your destination waiting just across the Strait of Gibraltar.

The next phase in the journey is another memorable moment, you are given your tickets and shown the way to customs to exit Spain and get on the ferry to Tangier. Don’t forget your passport! The ferry crossing saves you much time in Morocco because you actually clear customs here. The long queue takes most of the journey, but you can pass the time looking at the window searching for dolphins on the water. No less than three different species of dolphin live in the straight of Gibraltar!

Arriving in Morocco

Upon arrival in Morocco, your chauffeur awaits! This is where the day trip from Seville to Tangier really begins. A local guide and driver meet you at the port and give you a quick driving tour of Tangier, passing by many palaces and mansions. The prince of Saudi Arabia, along with many more of the rich and powerful of the world have palaces in Tangier.

Daytrip to Tangier Morocco

Cape Spartel

After passing through all the quarters of the city, you make your way to the beach. The first stop is Cape Spartel lighthouse. This lighthouse is the most northern in Africa, a fact sure to earn you bragging rights when you can say you’ve been there. Below the lighthouse, on Cape Spartel, lie the Caves of Hercules. The cave has two openings, one to sea and one to land. The sea opening is known as “The Map of Africa”. It is believed that the Phoenicians created the sea opening which is in the shape of Africa when looked at from the sea as a love letter to their homeland. This cave is such in legends. It was once believed to be bottomless and linked under the water to St Michael’s Caves in Gibraltar . What’s more, the caves get their name from the myth that Hercules stayed here whilst completing one of the twelve tasks needed to prove he was a god.

On the way back into town on this day trip from Seville to Tangier, you will have the opportunity to go for a camel ride. For many people, this is the highlight of the whole trip. Trooping along the beach by camelback. There is no better way to make you feel like an important trader reaching the far side of the desert than this! But don’t worry if you get scared, being so far out of your comfort zone fills most people with a slight trepidation.

Rock the Kasbah

Tangier used to be one of the most decadent cities on earth, and the palaces on the outskirts of the city attest to that. However, it was the old Kasbah that drew the rich and famous before. This area of town can be thought of as a Moroccan New Orleans, it’s where Monet lived and worked for a while, Keith Richards and William Boroughs have sought inspiration from its opulent labyrinth of streets, and the Clash even wrote a song about it! This former fortress citadel is today a tantalizing maze of crumbling paint and happy children running about, gently teasing at its former glories.

It’s just by the main gate into the Kasbah that our day trip from Seville to Tangier stops for lunch, in a picturesque three-story restaurant, lavishly decorated and bestowed with unbeatable views from its rooftop. Moroccan cuisine centers around couscous and tanginess. Simple, slow cooked, dishes which let the spices do the talking.

Walking Around the Market

After lunch, your day trip from Seville to Tangier progresses by continuing the walk through the old town and heading to the medina. The old town market is as alive today as it’s ever been. As you walk around the medina, be sure to take your time to take in all the sights, and sounds, and smells, which the bustling market bestows upon you.

day trips from spain to africa

After your guide has finished showing you around the market, you will be given free time to go off and explore and even try your hand at bartering. This writer loves a good spot of bartering, something about the challenge of trying to get what you want for is little as possible just makes good sport. As you go around, looking for bargains of your own, don’t forget to start with a price lower than you’re expecting and slowly work your way up.

Daytrip to Morocco

Once you’re done bargain hunting around the historic market, your guide will escort you back to the port where you will hop back on the ferry, search for more dolphins and then excitedly tell your driver waiting in Tarifa all about you day trip from Seville to Tangier as you’re driven back to you hotel.

Are the tours from Seville to Tangier running end of August 2022? Interested for 3 people. Thanks

Hi Petrina,

Sure! The ferry from Seville/Spain to Tangier has started and we run day trips and longer tours from Seville to Morocco and even to Marrakech, the desert, and the mountains in the south. I will pass you more information by email.

' data-srcset=

Is the ferry now running? I’d be interested in a trip in June 2022 for one adult and one teenager. Please provide details.

The ferry between Morocco and Spain is still not working. If you wish to go to Morroco the only way would be to fly. If you decide to do that the options will be flying to Tangier, to Casablanca or to Marrackech and I can arrange your trip there. I would suggest spending at least 2 days. If you have more time a longer trip would allow you also camel ride in the desert, a desert safari and camp overnight too. I hope this helps.

' data-srcset=

I’m interested in the day trip from Sevilla to Tangier on March 2022. 3 adults. Please send me the details. Thanks

Morning Erika,

For now, the ferry from Spain to Tangier is not operating. It is likely that they start in 2022. I would suggest you contact us at [email protected] later in January to see if there is any update. If not, the best alternative would be to take a flight and have a 2-3 day trip or have even a longer stay in Morocco… It is worth a trip! 🙂

' data-srcset=

Hi Mahsa, I would like to request the same detailed email that you sent to Charlie in the previous reply. I am interested in visiting from spain next July. Thank you

Thanks for getting in touch. For now, the ferries are not operating. For 2022 it seems they might start again so that I would suggest you contact us again. Right now the only options would be to fly there which is perfectly possible but then I would suggest you spend at least 2 days and if more than even better since we can visit more sites in Morocco apart from Tangier or Chefchaouen. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi Bridget,

Let me know how many days you have to plan to spend in Morocco so that I can guide you more. I will pass you the details of the day trip from Seville to Tangier with a camel ride shortly too.

Modes of Transportation

Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Algeciras to Tangier, which takes around 70 minutes and of course you will enjoy incredible ocean views on the day tour!

Another option for getting to Morocco is by air. You can find direct flights from major Spanish cities, such as Malaga, to Moroccan destinations like Tangier or Fes. The flight from Malaga to Tangier takes approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes. This can be a convenient and fast option if you prefer flying over sailing.

Organized Tours

If you prefer a more structured experience, organized tours are available that provide transportation from Spain to Morocco , as well as a guided itinerary for your day trip. These tours often include transportation by ferry or bus and offer stops in popular Moroccan destinations like Tangier, Chefchaouen, and Fes.

Always consider the time difference between Spain and Morocco when planning your day trip. Morocco is one hour behind Spain. This means you’ll gain an hour when you arrive in Morocco and lose one hour when you return to Spain.

Organized tours may include optional extras like a camel ride or even a walking tour on the Chefchaouen day trip.

Spain Departure Points

For the fastest and most convenient day trip to Tangier from Spain , you can take a ferry from Tarifa, Spain’s southernmost point. The Tarifa-Tangier ferry is the fastest crossing available, taking only about 30 minutes, and gets you directly to the city of Tangier.

Another option for your day trip to Morocco is to start your journey in Algeciras. The ferry from Algeciras to Tangier Med is a bit longer compared to the one from Tarifa, taking about 70 minutes. However, it offers an alternative for those who are located near this city. After reaching Tangier Med, you can easily access the city center by car or taxi.

If you’re departing from Malaga, your best choice will likely be a ferry to Melilla, a Spanish enclave in Northern Africa. From there, you can continue your journey to Morocco by land. Although not a direct connection like from Tarifa or Algeciras, this route offers an opportunity for those who would like to explore more of the region.

day trips from spain to africa

Seville is another popular starting point for a day trip to Morocco. In this case, you might want to first travel to one of the previously mentioned departure points like Tarifa or Algeciras. This option allows you to mix your Moroccan adventure with some sightseeing in the south of Spain.

Note: No matter which departure point you choose, it’s important to plan ahead and book your ferry tickets in advance to ensure a smooth journey to Tangier.

We recommend booking your ferry from Tarifa to Tangier with Ferryhopper , where you can easily compare prices and crossings displayed in one place, as well as get the latest ferry information before you book.

If you’re road tripping Spain , park in the car park next to Tarifa port. There are no height barriers but there are entry barriers and CCTV, so we think the port would be a safe place to leave a vehicle.

There is a bus service that heads along the main N-340 road from Tarifa, so you may be able to get there by bus from your campsite or hotel rather than leaving a vehicle in the port car park.

Once on the boat, you must get your embarkation document (which the ferry operator’s ticket office will give you) stamped, so don’t forget your passport, which you need to present with the document.

If you don’t do this you will be denied entry at Tangier Ville (not to be confused with Tanger-Med [sometimes referred to as Tangier Med] which is one of the main car ferry routes from Algeciras to Tangier) and have to go back on the ferry to get your document stamped.

Day Tours to Tangier from Tarifa

Your Spanish hotel or accommodation may also offer sightseeing tours, day trips and excursions to Tangier, as do some companies along the road to the ferry port in Tarifa.

You can also book a guided tour to Tangier online in advance. We recommend this best-selling Tarifa to Tangier full day tour , which gets great reviews and includes your round trip ferry ride, a traditional Moroccan lunch with mint tea (what else!), and a walking tour of all the main sights including the kasbah, the medina, and souk.

If you want a milder taste of Africa, try a Spain Morocco  day trip to Cueta , a Spanish enclave on the African continent, just a boat ride from Algeciras.

What to expect on arrival in tangier.

Tangier Morocco is a raw, noisy, disorganized, and in-your-face city!  You will be harassed as you come through the port by locals who say they are tour guides, taxi drivers, restauranteurs, hoteliers, and so on.

Many will try to enter into conversation and become your ‘friend’. They will often follow you for some distance, then demand money for guiding you. Be firm, stop, look them in the eye, and say that you have arrangements in place and don’t need their help, or simply say no, or “ la ” in Arabic. Then move on.

If you do want a day tour guide, it is far better to book one through a recognized organization, or your hotel if you’re staying overnight. This means your tour guide will be accredited, knowledgeable, and will speak English.

We recommend this highly rated Tangier full day grand private tour , where you’ll explore the old and new city of Tangier with an expert guide, and learn about the civilizations that have helped shape the port city. You’ll also get to visit the fantastic Caves of Hercules, inhabited since Neolithic times, and wander the maze-like streets of the Medina.

Check out our  Morocco travel tips  for more advice on what to expect when you visit Morocco.

How to Take a Trip from Tarifa to Tangier

Where to Stay in Tangier

If you decide to stay in Tangier, we highly recommend  Mimi Calpe , a European-style boutique hotel with a Moroccan vibe.

The hotel is stylish but retains a Moroccan feel. There is a stunning pool on the roof terrace, with fantastic views of the city and ocean. Breakfast is a little sparse, as is the Moroccan way, but more will be provided if you ask.

The hotel is ideally situated for both the Medina, marina, and new town, and it’s about a 15 minute walk from the port.

Want to stay connected in Morocco? In our detailed guide to SIM cards in Morocco , we share everything you need to know about buying and using Moroccan SIM and eSim cards.

What to Do in Tangier

Tangier is a very walkable city, with most things you will want to see within a 30 minute stroll. Use a navigation app to help you find your way around or a paper map from your hotel.  Be prepared to get lost, it’s all part of the fun!

If you’ve got a bit longer then you can head to the beach for an extra day, if you’ve got  one week to spend in Morocco  then take day trips to Chefchaouen and Casablanca.

How to Visit Tangier from Tarifa

Wander The Medina

Head for the walled Medina where you will find shops and cafes lining the twisting alleys and small squares. This is a great place to wander and observe local life. Mopeds are often driven at speed down narrow streets so be aware of your surroundings and keep to the sides where possible!

The atmosphere in the Medina is friendly but this is essentially a souk, a huge marketplace, and you will be asked to purchase if you show any interest – it is easier to only look at things you really want to buy!

Haggling is expected here, so if you do want to buy something enter into the spirit of it and enjoy. Don’t haggle for something you don’t really want only to walk away, this will not be appreciated.

After a bit of shopping, head for Place Petit Socco where you can drink mint tea and while away a few hours people-watching in the square.

You should also visit the marvelous  American Legation in the Medina, It’s the only American national historic landmark on foreign soil and has served as a symbol of American engagement with the Islamic world and North Africa since the early days of the republic.

The building is beautifully preserved and well worth a visit for around €2. There are fantastic letters from the United States Ambassador about being given lions as a gift, which really highlights the different cultures and what life might have been like in Tangier several hundred years ago.

Just outside the eastern walls of the Medina is Place April 9, 1947 (or Grand Socco to locals) where you can buy a chicken pastilla, a sort of delicious chicken pie encased in sweet and sticky pastry like a combination of puff and filo with nuts and spices. Eat your Moroccan lunch sitting on a bench in the small park and watch the colorful and noisy Tangier life go by.  Two pastillas and two bottles of water will cost the equivalent of around €2.

How to Take a Trip from Tarifa to Tangier

Head for the Kasbah

At the other end of the Medina and at the highest point of the old town is the Kasbah, a lovely little maze of streets, small boutique-style shops, and cafés. Much of this area has been renovated and there are some incredible sea views from the old battlements.

If you prefer a sit-down lunch, then head for the terrace of  El Morocco Club  where you can eat in the shade of the trees planted in the small square. This area has a laid-back vibe and has clearly been developed to appeal to tourists.

Visit the Kasbah Museum which was the residence of Portuguese governors in Tangier between 1471 and 1661. It is now home to a collection of archaeological artifacts and is well worth a visit. The museum is open every day except Tuesdays.

How to Take a Trip from Tarifa to Tangier

Take a Ride on the Bus

Try the relatively new  Tangier hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus  which will take you to the Kasbah, the Medina, the modern part of the city as well as the famous Caves of Hercules and Cape Espartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.

Hit the Beach

Located in an ideal place, the Municipal Beach of Tangier is the most lively beach in the city with calm waters and fine sand, perfect to make the most of the sun and the water activities on offer, as well as take a camel ride.

For something a bit more secluded, you’ll find a usually deserted beach near the Caves of Hercules. This is a pebbly beach, and not so good for swimming, but it’s a good spot for sunbathing, and you can also enjoy a bite to eat in one of its beachfront restaurants.

day trips from spain to africa

Sip a Coffee at the Gran Cafe de Paris

The Gran Cafe de Paris in Place de France is one of the oldest cafes in Tangier and is part of Tangier’s bohemian history. The cafe opened in 1927 and was a place of inspiration for many known artists and writers like Jack Kerouac and Tennessee Williams. They gathered and enjoyed coffee and smokes whilst discussing literature and life.

It is also known as a meeting place for spies, predominantly during WWII, where secrets and information would be shared.  It’s unlikely that it’s been decorated since then though and is a bit grubby and tired with odd loo arrangements. Nevertheless, you should go and people watch!

How to Take a Trip from Tarifa to Tangier

Where to Eat in Tangier

Eat at  Anna a Paulo  a cozy Italian restaurant in the new town. The food is excellent, with a number of dishes having a Moroccan fusion feel and the wine list extensive. Expect to pay close to European prices for dinner and drinks.

For a more budget option, eat at La Table du Marche, an upmarket cafe at the new marina. The food is excellent, with particularly good burgers and salads, but don’t expect alcohol to be served here. Dinner will cost around €30 for two with bottled water.

Should You Take a Day Trip to Tangier?

Tangier is a city of many facets. To enjoy the vibrant and colorful city you have to accept the less than palatable aspects of rubbish and poor hygiene, some harassment and begging along with visible poverty. It is worth it to experience a culture so different from our own and to meet the overwhelmingly warm and friendly Moroccan people.

To take a trip from Tarifa to Tangier, you need no longer than two days and could easily see most of Tangier in a day trip. We would definitely recommend a trip if you’re staying in Tarifa, especially if you’ve never ventured to North Africa before.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need a visa to visit morocco.

Most travelers who want to visit Morocco can do so without applying for a visa, as long as your trip does not exceed 90 days. All travelers must arrive with a passport that is valid for at least six months from the time you enter Morocco and have completed the mandatory embarkation card. You can check whether you’re from a visa-exempt country with the Kingdom of Morocco Ministry of Foreign Affairs .

Is it safe to travel to Tangier from Tarifa?

Although you may experience a small amount of hassle, travel in Morocco is fundamentally safe. You’ll notice a heavier-than-Europe police presence and may see some of Morocco’s tourist police, or Brigade Touristique , who are there to help and keep you safe.

What should I wear in Tangier?

Although close to Spain and Europe as the crow flies, Tangier is a typical North African port city before it is a tourist town. Be respectful of their Islamic culture and wear long pants or a longer dress, and avoid strappy tops. Hot pants and crop tops will get you unwanted attention.

Can I use Euros to pay?

Some hotels may accept euros, but it’s easy to get dirhams from an ATM or money broker on arrival. The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, meaning you cannot buy it outside of the country.

Can I take my car?

Yes. It’s easy to temporarily import your vehicle into Morocco – make sure you take your vehicle registration documents with you, and if you’re in a hire car, check with the rental company that they’re happy for you to take their car to Morocco. Once in Morocco, there are lots of places that you can get to within a day or so, including Chefchouen, the Blue City, Fez, and Meknes, as well as a whole load of small towns along the Atlantic coast. Day Trip to Morocco from Spain: Full Day Itinerary

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain

During our summer road trip through southern Europe, we heard about a day trip to Morocco from Spain that we could do. We knew straight away it was a trip we had to factor into our route. So, after a bit of research, we added the Spanish town of Tarifa to our itinerary. Located at the southernmost end of the Iberian Peninsula, this charming town looked more inviting to us than Algeciras, another popular ferry port. This guide outlines all the details on how to plan a trip to Tangier from the port of Tarifa.

Where is Tangier, Morocco?

Tangier is a large port city in Morocco located across the Strait of Gibraltar, where Africa meets Europe. At 27km (17 miles) from the Spanish coast, it’s one of the most popular Morocco day trip destinations from Spain. If you book the fast ferry, you can be there in an hour. So that is another reason why visitors choose to visit for the day.

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain

Is Tangier worth visiting from Spain?

Yes. I mean who wouldn’t want to step foot in Africa for the day if they could? Morocco had always intrigued me as a country and knowing we could do a day trip from Spain had me so excited. The thought of strolling through the old medina, eating some traditional Moroccan food and admiring the architecture was enough to convince me to book a trip. With a lot of things to see and do , you can fill your day or take it at your leisure depending on your interests.

Is Morocco safe?

Since taking the trip, I’ve been asked if it is safe for tourists to visit Morocco. At no point did I feel unsafe, but I should note I was travelling with my boyfriend. One thing we didn’t like was the constant pressure to explore the old medina with a guide. It was more of an annoyance than a safety concern, and I’ll give more details below. But it’s something to think about when planning a trip.

How do I get to Morocco from Spain?

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain: Tarifa Old Town

From the Spanish town of Tarifa. We chose to stay in Tarifa not only because it’s the closest spot to Morocco from Spain, but it also looked like such a charming town. The whitewashed streets are full of restaurants, history and a laid-back vibe. Algeciras is another port in Spain offering a day trip to Morocco, and although it’s larger than Tarifa it didn’t seem to have the same vibe.

day trips from spain to africa

I also recommend heading to  Bar El Francés   for either lunch or dinner while you’re there. It is a tapas bar and restaurant with the most amazing affordable food. If it doesn’t look like your kind of eatery some of the best tuna fishing takes place out of Tarifa. You’ll see it on many menus around town, and it’s a must try.

The Ferry Crossing – to Morocco from Spain

There are many companies offering ferry crossings. But for a day trip, I recommend taking the fast FRS Ferry  from Tarifa to Tangier Ville. The journey time is only one hour which frees up your time to explore more. We took the 11am ferry out and the 8pm ferry back, but there are several crossings daily.

day trips from spain to africa

Due to the time difference, you gain one hour on the way to Morocco and lose an hour returning to Spain. For example, we left Spain at 11am and arrived at the port at 11am local time as Morocco is one hour behind. On our return journey, we left Tangier at 8pm and arrived in Tarifa at 10pm local time, just in time to head out for a Spanish dinner.

We arrived at the ferry terminal 45 minutes before our sailing time. As soon as you board the ferry, join the line to have your passport checked and stamped by Moroccan customs. The queue forms quickly as every passenger has to go through this process before disembarking. We could still see some passengers waiting on arrival. There is also a café and snack area onboard, so after clearing customs, we enjoyed a drink while making the crossing.

Ferry Port Tour Guides

When we exited the ferry into the port, I’d read we’d encounter locals trying to sell us different guides and tours… WOW, there were a lot! I felt like we were prepared to handle them but, a word of warning they’re relentless and will follow you. I recommend picking up a guide once you’re inside the old medina or arranging one before you travel . The locals at the ferry terminal have extremely inflated prices, and I’m not sure how much value for money they provide. There are also options to bundle areas like the medina and Hercules Caves together in one tour. In hindsight, this is what we should have done.

What is there to see and do in Tangier?

Tangier is full of old Moroccan charm and in one day you’ll really get a sense of the culture and country.

day trips from spain to africa

The Old Medina

The Old Medina was hands down the highlight of the day for me. Strolling through the narrow and compact streets gave me major Aladdin vibes. I loved how colourful everything was and also the alleyways, courtyards and details of the architecture. Being the old, fortified area of the city there is a real sense of history and culture.

We fully expected to wander these streets on our own after shaking off the guides at the port. But we picked up a local guide just as we were making our way to the entrance of the medina. He was pretty persistent and full-on but having him show us around turned out to be the best thing that happened. He was very friendly and explained the history and meaning behind a lot of the buildings and highlighted things that would have passed us by otherwise. The guide did try to take us to a few shops owned by his friends but a simple ‘no thank you’ was exchanged and that was the end of it, no hard sell like other places I’ve experienced in the past. It’s a good idea to pick up some souvenirs or locally crafted items in this area.

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain - Medina Homes in Tangier

We did go back to the medina towards the end of the day but we were hounded by people again. Everyone was trying to give us another tour around and it became too much. We paid someone a minimal amount to leave us alone. So, I recommend having a guide in this area and making sure you see everything you want to while they’re with you.

Tangier City

After exploring the old medina, we continued to check out the city of Tangier. They’re pretty close to each other so it’s a natural way to explore on foot. It has the feel of a typical city with office blocks, bars, restaurants and shopping with a little bit of mayhem thrown in. We stopped to enjoy a coffee at Gran Café de Paris, a bustling spot on a busy corner. I’d read about it before our trip, and it’s a nice place to take a break and do some people watching.

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain - Tanja Marina Bay

After strolling along the main street, we took a walk to the Corniche de Tanger. It’s a promenade area running parallel to the city beach with lovely tropical landscaping. It’s also a pedestrian-friendly area and leads right along to the Tangier Marina Bay.

Tanja Marina Bay

day trips from spain to africa

In the bay of Tangier is a relatively new marina development called Tanja Marina Bay. It’s a huge urban marina with a shopping complex, restaurants and some incredible views looking back towards the old medina, the beaches and the city. We had a walk around and sat down for some ice cream and soaked in the views. It has a completely different vibe to the old city, and it’s worth checking out. This splash of modern architecture and leisure scene is the type of thing I’ve seen in Dubai, and it brings a nice blend of old and new to the city.

Where to Eat a Traditional Moroccan Lunch?

As we were only exploring Tangier for one day, I wanted to try out some authentic Moroccan tagine for lunch. I did some research beforehand as I have to find somewhere that will cater to a gluten free diet. I’m glad I did as our guide took us to a small local haunt and unfortunately, they could only offer me a salad.

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain - Gluten Free Tagine, traditional Moroccan Lunch

Rif Kebdani is located in the old medina vicinity, it’s both a tourist and local favourite. Although it looked to be a bit higher in price the reviews and gluten free options made it a clear winner for us. We were not disappointed. The decor was charming, and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We ordered the lamb and vegetable tagine. They also recommended their shrimp avocado salad which was delicious, and Will tried out some of their desserts. I recommend trying them out.

What should I wear on a day trip to Morocco?

day trips from spain to africa

Morocco is a Muslim country, so for women keeping your shoulders and knees covered will make you feel more comfortable while you’re visiting. I decided to wear a midi-skirt and a t-shirt with a pair of open-toe sandals. We visited during August, so the temperature was pretty hot. But it was important to me to keep cool, stylish and respectful during our day trip. I didn’t experience any unwanted attention, but I was with my boyfriend which likely helped. If you are a solo female, I highly recommend dressing modestly.

Day Trip to Morocco from Spain - Laura & Will

So to wrap up, would I take a day trip to Morocco from Spain again, specifically Tangier? The short answer is no, I feel like we saw all we wanted to in Tangier and I’m so happy we experienced it the way we did. A day trip is the perfect amount of time, and it has reaffirmed how much I’d love to explore other areas of Morocco on my future travels.

Thanks for reading, I hope this has been a useful guide to planning a day trip to Morocco from Spain. Do you know of any more things in Tangier that should make it onto this list? Have you visited Tangier already? Let me know in the comments below or find me on  Instagram .

Hi, thanks for this helpful blog post! Would there be parking in Tarifa (especially near the boat departure) if we drove a car in?

27 February 2023 at 19:45

Good question! I did see parking at the port but I’m not sure if anyone can park there or what the fees are. Tarifa is a small town, so I’d recommend finding a public parking area in town as a backup just in case. It’ll be easy to walk to the port. Enjoy your trip 🙂

Thanks for sharing, my wife and I are traveling to Europe for the very first time in NOV-DEC to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We’re starting in Portugal, then Italy, Spain and we decided to cut our Madrid stay short by 2 days and are considering an overnight trip to Morocco, though we’re still not 100%. We prefer Airbnb but in Morocco are leaning towards a hotel for one night. Any thoughts on that? Also, do you recommend a site or someone for a day trip tour in advance?

13 September 2023 at 11:19

Hi Hector, firstly congratulations on your 25-year wedding anniversary! It sounds like you have a great trip planned. I recommend staying in a riad, a traditional Moroccan home that has been converted into a B&B type accommodation. They’re usually cheaper than hotels and offer a unique stay and glimpse into an aspect of Moroccan life. In regard to the day trip tour – what type of activities or things would you like to see?

4 October 2023 at 15:11

Hi, thank you and thanks so much for your reply! Apologies for the delay in my response.

We honestly want to see what the city is all about, visit the Medina, shops, good coffee shops and restaurants etc. Not really looking to leave the city unless the right opportunity presents itself.

When it comes to breathtaking views and geographical wonders, few places rival the stunning views from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. The phrase “Can you see Africa from Spain?” often sparks curiosity and wonder. The short answer is…yes! You can see Africa from Spain.

This November my family and I took a trip to Spain and we were able to see Africa and Morocco from across the Straight of Gibraltar. We stayed in Ojen, which is just north of Marbella and we were able to see Africa because of how high in the mountain we were.

In this blog post, we’ll take you on a virtual journey exploring various locations in Spain that offer a glimpse of the African continent. From bustling cities to serene coastal spots, each vantage point has its own unique charm and perspective.

It also happens to be incredibly well located when it comes to day trips in the region.

Whether you’re looking for pristine beaches, Andalusian mountain towns or Moorish history, the sparsely populated areas near Malaga are filled with cultural and natural gems that are well worth leaving town for a day to see.

The ever popular Gibraltar takes about three hours to reach but the attractions there are more than worth the travel time.

The spectacular Cuevas de San Miguel are a must see on your visit, as are the Mediterranean Steps to reach the top of The Rock from where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas and views all the way to Africa.

Calle Real is also a popular stop-off for people looking for some retail therapy where you can indulge in everything from designer to souvenir stores.

Nerja, Spain

A mere hour away from busy Malaga, you’ll find the magical seaside resort of Nerja, home to everything from stunning beaches to the surreal cave networks.

One of the most beautiful and unique beach towns reachable in a day, Nerja features a mixture of sandy beaches and rocky headlands overlooking the sea that are a pleasure to explore.

What makes the coastal destination stand out however is the network of captivating, treasure island-like caves peppering its shores, which can be visited on tours or at your own leisure.

3. Marbella

Costa del Sol’s most popular and well-known city is the sunny, beach-filled Marbella.

Before hitting the numerous beaches, be sure to spend a few hours wandering the winding, hilly streets of the Old Town.

The nearby Puerto Banus is popular for nightlife and those seeking a little luxury although the best beaches are right by Marbella itself and include the buzzing Bounty Beach and the tranquil Playa Real de Zaragoza.

4. Frigiliana

Frigiliana, Spain

The picture-perfect whitewashed Spanish township of Frigiliana is only an hour away from Malaga and draws countless visitors a year to its cobbled streets flanked by white, terracotta-tiled houses.

The main pastime here is leisurely strolling the labyrinth of alleys and pathways stumbling across charming boutiques and cafes.

If you want to soak up some history, then head over to the ancient fortress and then spend the afternoon exploring the Mudéjar historic quarter.

The surrounding countryside here is centered on artisanal culture and fresh produce so be sure to enjoy the excellent wines, tapas and shops you’ll find in town.

Recommended tour : Half-Day Nerja and Frigiliana

Ronda, Spain

A visually stunning cliffside city that is literally built on and around the dramatic El Tajo Gorge, Ronda is one of the most unique day trips from Malaga.

Filled with ornate bridges connecting different parts of the cliffs offering truly breathtaking views of the gorge below, Ronda is a favorite among photographers.

Aside from the incredible views, Ronda is also home to Spain’s oldest bullfighting ring and a collection of fascinating churches such as the Iglesia del Spiritu Santo and the Iglesia de Santa Maria La Mayor making the city the perfect mix of culture, history and nature.

Wine enthusiasts will want to visit the winery known as Bodegas La Sangre de Ronda, where you’ll have the chance to try delicious wines and learn about their role in the region.

Recommended tour : From Malaga: Day Trip to Ronda and the Pueblos Blancos

Cordoba, Spain

Cordoba is without question one of the most beautiful and most interesting cities in Spain thanks to its historical and religious heritage.

The eclectic mix of cultures sets it aside as decidedly more diverse than other places in the country and makes for some fascinatingly different areas of town.

The famous historic center is the Jewish Quarter, with its reputation as one of the largest World Heritage Sites on Earth.

Other unmissable sights are the 14th Century Synagogue, the Cathedral and of course the Great Mosque of Cordoba.

This monument is an incredibly significant landmark in Western Islamic culture and is home to monumental halls, gorgeous stained glass and impossibly intricate mosaics.

7. Antequera

Antequera, Spain

Antequera is widely known to be the heartland of Andalusia in terms of both location and culture.

Found in the middle of a rural plain, the city is home to stunning Moorish and Spanish architecture that is epitomized in the region’s most famous attraction, the Antequera Dolmens.

The prehistoric site is also known as the Sistine Chapel of Ancient times and is a spectacular archaeological visit.

The city itself offers mouthwatering authentic Andalusian food, a fascinating historic center and incredible views from the higher points in town.

If you want to do something a little more active, head out to the stunning landscapes of the Karst region and explore the various hiking routes in the El Torcal nature reserve.

Home to the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world, the Jewish Quarter of Santra Cruz, the Plaza de España and more, there is no shortage of historical attractions to keep you busy, not to mention that they’re all architectural works of genius.

Asides from this, the city’s overwhelmingly Spanish personality is instantly infectious and you can enjoy all Seville has to offer like tapas, flamenco and lively parties in the plazas usually side-by-side with charming locals.

11. Costa Tropical

Costa Tropical, Spain

Stretching out from Nerja and continuing all the way to Motril is the lesser known alternative to Costa del Sol, Costa Tropical.

With a delightfully diverse range of beaches, fishing villages and rocky cliffs, the 60km stretch of coast is an enchanting drive full of stops on the way.

The subtropical climate attracts sun-seekers and the villages attract travelers searching for a little culture, but all the destinations feel sparsely populated and tranquil.

Some of the most popular sites include the quaint fishing village of La Herradura and the picturesque whitewashed town of Salobreña.

12. Granada

Amongst many other things, Granada is famed for its beauty, proximity to La Sierra Nevada mountain range and its Moorish influence.

The Alhambra Palace is in fact one of the finest and most ornate palace complexes in the world that also contains the beautiful and UNESCO listed Generalife Gardens.

Other highlights in town include the attractive Arabic quarter, full of meandering streets and Moorish buildings, or the lively district of Sacromonte.

Here you’ll find buzzing plazas, live flamenco shows and even free tapas in some of the more popular squares.

13. Tangier

Tangier, Morocco

A stone’s throw way from Spain, across the Strait of Gibraltar you’ll find one of Morocco’s most attractive cities, Tangier.

Historically a port city, it’s grown into a thriving cosmopolitan hub full of explosions of color and culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to book your ferry ticket in advance.

It’s not required to have a booked ferry ticket in advance but it definitely doesn’t hurt. Purchasing your ferry ticket ahead of time ensures availability on the particular ship and in most instances, the time that you prefer to depart. Although buying a ferry ticket is possible at the port, it’s risky if you’re aiming to be in Tangier at a specific time.

If you are driving and bringing your car onto the ferry, you should definitely not wait to purchase your ticket until you arrive at the port. The ferries themselves are large and there’s plenty of room for passengers but there is limited space for vehicles . Having a ferry reservation prior to boarding is the best way to go.

→ 🤝 Don’t worry about logistics and book a guided tour to Tangier instead ←

Day Trip to Tangier

Travelling to Morocco from Spain is quite uncomplicated in terms of requirements. For anyone taking the ferry from Tarifa to Morocco, it’s required to travel with a valid passport that doesn’t expire in the next six months. You will also need to make sure there is an empty passport page for the stamp you will receive from the border crossing officer. If applicable, do not forget any additional documents which support your permanent or temporary residency situation.

The last major item you’ll need to be aware of is proof of accommodation in Morocco. This means you need to be able to show the law enforcement agents that you have already booked your hotel or stay in advance. It is technically also required that you have a return ticket already booked upon entering Morocco. If you are travelling with a loose itinerary and do not have a designated “leave date” then some further questions may be raised by the authorities.

The Tarifa ferry to Tangier is pet friendly . Taking your dog with you is possible as long as you follow the ferry operator’s rules. These regulations may include requiring your dog to wear a muzzle or be placed in a kennel area provided by the ferry. Since it is a short ferry ride, leaving your dog in the car is also possible. It is strongly recommended you have your dog’s pet passport ready if anyone happens to ask for it.

A pet passport may include a vaccination card, official animal ID or certificate of good health. This set of documents can be easily obtained at a veterinarian office in Spain before departure, if you do not have one already prepared. There is usually a limit of 4 or 5 pets per passenger but it does depend on the ferry company you book with.

tangier morocco ferry

You do not need a visa for visiting Morocco for less than 3 months (or 90 days). This applies to citizens of the U.S., Canada, Australia, UK and EU . Although a temporary tourist visa is not required, you will still undergo a quick processing procedure aboard the ferry. You’ll simply queue up for the officer to leave a stamp in your passport. You do not have to have anything ready upfront as long as you have all the documents in order per the previous section. The entire process is straightforward, convenient and handled during the ferry ride .

If you are interested in taking your rented car to Tangier from Tarifa and you rented it in Spain, you’ll need to ask the rental car company if it’s allowed. Morocco and the ferry operator will primarily be concerned with the fact that you have the rights to bring the rental car into Africa but they don’t set the rules. If the company you rented the car from permits the travel, they’ll issue you a set of documents as proof.

Unfortunately, most rental car companies will not allow you to bring a car from Spain to Africa. If you are interested in the possibility, definitely ask the company during your rental process. More on this below, but the more common scenario is to leave your car rental in Tarifa and board the Tarifa to Tangier ferry as a foot passenger. An additional alternative is to browse for a separate car rental in Tangier so you have a ride ready once you arrive at the Tangier City Port.

If you are not taking your own car or rental car onto the Tangier ferry, you can leave it in Tarifa while you’re visiting Tangier. There is a designated parking lot near the ferry port in Tarifa for passengers to leave their cars long or short term . However, the lot is small and fills up quickly. It should not be the only option to rely on if you’re planning on leaving your car in Spain. There is plenty of street parking in the vicinity which is a mix of both paid and free spots. If you have the time, drive around until you find a free spot, especially if you are staying in Tangier for more than a couple of days.

Be mindful of any possible “no parking” signs and don’t be shy to ask a local if parking is allowed in a specific spot. People will help you out! We personally left a rental car in a neighbouring street by the ferry port and returned to our car in the same shape we left it in with zero tickets.

Arriving in Tangier

Even though it’s a short one hour ferry ride, the journey from Tarifa to Tangier means you’ll land in a completely different country and continent . There are a couple of things to know beforehand which will make your arrival and time in Tangier as smooth as possible. These are a few helpful pieces of information on what to expect when arriving in Tangier.

Particularly when disembarking the ferry, the easiest way to get to your hotel or Airbnb is by walking . In fact, it’s highly recommended to choose a place to stay that’s near the port or within a 15 minute walk to save yourself the hassle of obtaining transportation. This is assuming your hotel or host does not offer transportation. If they do offer a pickup from the port, it’s a great opportunity to take them up on the offer for a small fee if you do not feel like walking.

One of the most common ways to get around Tangier is by taxi . The main reason is, they’re very affordable if you compare them to taxi prices in Europe. Unlike Europe, they can be a bit more confusing to navigate due to different types of taxi rides. There is a solo taxi which is just for you or your party. Then, there is a shared taxi which often takes place in a bigger SUV or van. This is essentially exactly what it sounds like – a shared taxi ride with other passengers. These taxis will of course be less expensive but involves more communication about who is paying what amount, which direction you’re headed and when.

You may see many buses running through Tangier but they can be quite intimidating to use as a foreign traveler. The timetables are often out of date and also in Arabic , which makes taking the bus less straightforward than in some other countries. Unless you receive assistance from your host, hotel or a guide, it’s not the easiest way to get around Tangier.

ferry to tangier

Arabic and different variations of Arabic are the official languages of Morocco. Additionally, French is also spoken by more than half of the country’s population. If you’re like us, Arabic is a bit harder to learn but getting by with a few French phrases is manageable. Take the time to study up and learn a handful of words or sentences in both languages. It’ll make your initial “landing” in Tangier a bit easier and the locals will appreciate your effort.

Immediately upon stepping foot in Morocco, you’ll notice people approaching you for all sorts of things. Since they’ll notice you are getting off the ferry as a tourist, the most common question you’ll get from the greeters is if you need a ride to your hotel. If you choose to entertain one of these offers, it’s absolutely critical you agree to a price for the car or taxi ride beforehand . Taking a taxi ride without agreeing to the price upfront leaves you to the possibility of being scammed or overpaying by a great deal.

In addition to being offered a ride, you’ll also be offered tours and guides. There are so many benefits to exploring a city like Tangier with a guide, but you need to make sure they’re legitimate. If anybody is asking for cash upfront , this is a dead giveaway that the offer is not valid. The most assuring way to book a tour, activity or guide is with a reputable service or with your hotel. Greeters targeting tourists can be very persuasive and persistent. You’ll need to continue on with your way and politely decline their offers, even if it takes a while! A general rule of thumb is to not give anyone a reason to demand money from you. For example, if you allow a potential taxi driver to hold your bags while you’re negotiating a fee with them, they may already expect a tip.

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, 1 day ceuta, spain itinerary: visit europe….in africa.

Last Updated on February 19, 2024 by Talita

As a Spanish city located in Africa & surrounded by Morocco …. Ceuta is kinda weird. But that’s exactly why you should visit! Keep reading here to get an itinerary with all you need to know to visit Ceuta. Including maps, crossing the famed Strait of Gibraltar, accommodation, attractions, what to do…and more!

Fact: there is one part of Spain that shares a land border with Africa

Fun fact: the city is called Ceuta, it’s Spanish yet located in Africa and surrounded by Morocco…. and it’s a pleasant & easy place to visit!

Besides visiting just for the weird geopolitical situation, a trip to Ceuta will also give you the chance to:

  • Take a ferry across the famed Strait of Gibraltar
  • Set foot on the “African” continent
  • Wander through the city’s 1,000+ year old city walls and fortresses
  • Experience a unique mix of Spanish & North African culture

How to use this Ceuta travel itinerary

As you’ll see below, our detailed itinerary is just for 1 full day in Ceuta – beginning with us arriving the night before via ferry, staying a single night, spending the next day seeing the city, and then catching the ferry back to the Spanish mainland later that evening.

Technically, this could be done as a day trip from mainland Spain since the ferry is only about 90 minutes each way. But I’d vote spending the night if you can.

Beyond this short itinerary, we’ll also give some alternatives for what to do if you’re extending your stay in Ceuta or your trip overall by heading to nearby destinations (you’ll find them at the bottom of the article).

City of Ceuta

   Ceuta Fast Facts

The What and the Where: Ceuta is an autonomous Spanish city and enclave that’s physically located on the African continent. It’s situated on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast and is just a short 8.7 miles (14 km) ferry ride away from the Spanish mainland.

How big is Ceuta? Pretty small! Just 7.14 square miles (18.5 square km) with a population of around 85,000.

What is Ceuta’s currency? Ceuta is technically a part of Spain and thus uses the Euro, just as Spain does.

What language do people speak in Ceuta? Spanish, just as they do on the Spanish mainland.

1.5 So, is Ceuta….Spanish? Or Moroccan? As you can imagine, this is a bit of a complex topic.

As far as political borders go, Ceuta is 100% a part of Spain. They speak Spanish, its citizens can move freely throughout Spain and the rest of the European Union, and there’s only a loose border control for people crossing from Spain to Ceuta (or vice versa).

But as far as geographical location, Ceuta is very much in Morocco and northern Africa. Ceuta is not physically connected to Spain by land at all and the only thing it shares a border with (besides the sea) is Morocco (with a 5.2 mi/8.4 km line separating the two).

Some people call Ceuta “Spain’s African Gibraltar” (Gibraltar is another strange geopolitical entity as a British territory physically located in Spain).

Back of Gibraltar and Spanish Coast

View from the top of Gibraltar’s famous “rock”

As you might expect, the city’s borders are heavily fortified – consisting of 10-foot barbed wire fences ringed with searchlights, movement sensors, and guard towers. Which also means that cross-continent immigration is a sensitive topic….so be cautious if you bring it up to anyone during your trip.

As if Ceuta isn’t unique enough on its own, there’s one more city in this exact same geopolitical situation — the Spanish enclave of Melilla. Melilla, like Ceuta, is also located on Morocco’s Mediterranean Coast. It’s about a 4-5 hour ferry from Málaga .

Naturally, Ceuta and Melilla have a pretty interesting background. They’ve been under Spanish control for more than 400 years (there were under Portugal’s before that), were once used as ports to fight piracy, and are where Spanish dictator Francisco Franco launched his civil war campaign in the 1930s.

Because of all this history, when Morocco became independent from France in 1956, Spain wouldn’t give the cities up.

Spanish flag in Ceuta

Obviously, there’s debate from both sides. In an overly simplified way, Spain’s argument is that the city has been Spanish since before Morocco was officially a country. And Morocco also makes territorial claims stating that Ceuta and Melilla are still colonies and thus should be returned.

Either way, it’s a unique, slightly messy situation.

   When to visit Ceuta

Ceuta has pretty nice weather all year round, but it can get pretty hot in the summer. We went in December and, though it got a little cold at night, it was a major upgrade from our Swedish winter.

How long to stay in Ceuta

We personally felt we were able to do most of what we wanted to do in Ceuta with just one day. But if you wanted to spend some more time hiking the nearby mountains, taking a day trip to Morocco , or spending time at the beach or pools (if you’re there in the summer), you could easily extend your stay another day or two.

   How to get to Ceuta

There are 3 ways you can get to Ceuta:

#1) Take the ferry from Algeciras, Spain to Ceuta

#2) Take a HELICOPTER from Algeciras to Ceuta (yes, really!)

For just over the cost of taking the ferry (35 euros one way), you can take a helicopter from Algeciras, Spain to Ceuta.

Here’s the schedule for the 35 euro price (it’s 50+ euros all the other days):

From Algeciras to Ceuta — FRIDAY — 14:30-14:40 or 15:35-15:45

From Ceuta to Algeciras — SUNDAY — 19:30 – 19:40

Unfortunately, we found out about this option only after we’d already arrived. Otherwise, we definitely would have taken the helicopter one way and the ferry the other!

You can book the helicopter here: www.helity.es (click the upper right button to change the website’s language to English)

#3) Cross overland through Morocco

We don’t have any personal experience with this, unfortunately, but we know it can be done.

   How to get around Ceuta

The city is pretty compact so you can get to many places on foot. Within the center, there are also plentiful buses. For places outside the city center (like the San Isabel II overlook), you’ll probably need to take a taxi.

We’ll specify how to get to individual places in our itinerary below.

Where to stay the night in Ceuta

There isn’t a ton of accommodation options listed online for Ceuta.

But since we knew we were going to be arriving late, we wanted to stay somewhere close to the ferry terminal (even if it was a bit far from the city center).

So, we stayed at Pension La Puntilla (which also ended up being the cheapest accommodation we could find) and paid about $40/night for a private double with a shared bathroom.

Cheap hotel in Ceuta

It was a pleasant enough place and likely your best option if you are on a budget. Plus, the owner was really nice and helpful!

If you want to stay somewhere a little bit nicer and closer to the center, Hostal Plaza Ruiz also looks to be a good choice.

What to do in Ceuta (Ceuta 1 day itinerary)

Here’s a peek at the map with our recommended 1 day itinerary with 7 stops in Ceuta (you’ll need to click to zoom in and out on the map to see all the stops more closely):

Ceuta Itinerary Map

(Click the image above or here to see a live version of the map )

Stop #1: Visit Ceuta’s tourist office

Your first stop of the day will likely be a tourist office so you can pick up a map and ask any questions you might have. There’s one tourist office near Plaza de Africa and another near the port (you’ll see signs for both of them, or you can check the map above).

Stop #2: Walk the Royal Walls

A short walk from either of the tourist offices is Ceuta’s most famous landmark — their old city walls! They are completely free to visit, so explore as much as you like.

There’s also a museum which you can visit for a small fee, and there are signs along the walls where you can read more as you go.

Ceuta Canals Spain

Stop #3: Wander through the center of Ceuta (from Plaza de Africa to Plaza de los Reyes)

Your next step will be to get yourself to Plaza de Africa (either ask around or follow the signs — it’s just a few minutes on foot from the walls.)

From there, follow the main road (“Gran Via”) which will be on your left if you’re looking at the Plaza’s cathedral.

After a few minutes down this bustling thoroughfare, you’ll hit Plaza de la Constitución on your left. While here, feel free to pop into the central market if you like or take a selfie with the giant Hercules statue.

Continue down the same street as before (which has now turned into the pedestrian-only Paseo del Revellín), passing the “Dragon House” until you reach Plaza de los Reyes.

Stop #4: Soak up the sun in Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo (Maritime Park of the Mediterranean)

If you turn left onto any of the roads off Plaza de los Reyes and head straight, you’ll find yourself at this park of pristine saltwater swimming pools, abundant plant life, and other entertainment (including a restaurant and a casino).

If it’s winter, a visit here might not be the best use of your time because the pools are all drained (although we still visited and had a good time strolling through the gardens). But if it’s summer or warm enough, I think it’d be a great place to spend a hot day outdoors.

The entrance fee for us was nothing (probably because was winter so you couldn’t swim anyway ), but otherwise , I think the fee is about 5 euros for adults.

Here’s what the maritime park looks like with water:

Stop #5: See Europe from the San Antonio overlook and hike around Ceuta’s fortress on Mount Hacho

For this stop, you’ll first need to get to El Mirador de San Antonio (San Antonio overlook).

From Plaza de la Constitución, you can take bus #1 (right next to the taxi stand) to the end of the line. If you take the bus, just tell the bus driver “el Mirador de San Antonio” so he can show you when to get off. But even with the bus, you’ll still have quite a lot of walking to do uphill to get to the overlook.

Unfortunately, we don’t have more details about how this bus works since we didn’t actually take it. We meant to, but after waiting at the stop for 20+ minutes without it coming, we decided to stop wasting time (especially with our ferry to catch) and just took a taxi from the taxi stand next door.

The taxi driver used the meter and it cost us 3.50 euros to get to the overlook.

Once you make it to the overlook, look straight across the water to see Europe and British Gibral:

Gibraltar from Ceuta lookout

That chunk of rock behind us is Gibraltar and Europe!

Then turn around and take in the view over Ceuta (although your Ceuta views will get even better as your adventure continues):

Ceuta Bay Spain

Now, it’s time to get up to that fortress. Unfortunately, the fortress itself is an active military base so you can’t go inside. But you certainly walk around the outside.

Once you exit the parking lot of the overlook, head left up  towards the hill. After a few minutes walking, you will see a steep, narrow road on your left that heads toward something that looks like a cell phone tower.

Follow it up and up and up. Then, you’ll find a trail hugging the fortress that looks something like this:

Ceuta’s fortress on Mount Hacho Walls

Make your way along fortress wall (accompanied by some wonderful views of Ceuta down below), until you find a paved road that starts heading back down.

Ceuta’s fortress on Mount Hacho

We followed this paved road (you’ll see lots of turn  offs — just keep walking down and you’ll find your way) all the way to the coast opposite of the side of the city you came from (the road you want is called Calle Recinto Sur – you can find it plotted on the map). We followed Calle Recinto Sur all the way back to the center. There were some great coastal views on the walk (although it was a little long), but it looked like there were also bus stops for bus #1 all along the way.

Apparently, there’s also a reasonably priced restaurant at the top of Mount Hacho, but we didn’t see it.

On the other side of the mountain, there’s also another fort (called Fort of El Desnarigado) that has a military museum. We aren’t entirely sure how to get there or if it’s worth going to, but if anyone out there has been, let us know!

Stop #6: Head to Benzu and San Isabel II Overlook (Mirador de Benzu/Mirador de San Isabel II)

The final places we wanted to visit while in Ceuta were the Benzu and San Isabel II Overlook.

Unfortunately, buses don’t go out there so you’ll need to take a taxi. We took a taxi from Plaza de Los Reyes and negotiated a rate of 20 euros for an hour driving with some “tour” info along the way.

Our taxi driver only spoke Spanish (which was fine for us because we both speak Spanish), but you may need to ask around or expect to pay slightly more if you need an English speaking driver.

Along the way, we asked our taxi driver plenty of questions about life in Ceuta and he gave us some history and background on things as we drove by.

If you don’t speak Spanish but don’t care about this extra info and just want to get to the overlooks, just tell your driver “ Mirador de Benzu” and “ Mirador de San Isabel II” (or show them on your map). He or she should know where to go and can maybe take you for a cheaper price.

Ideally, we would have liked to visit these overlooks during the day…but they were still quite lovely at night!

Stop #7: Pick up your bags & make your way to the port before you miss your ferry back to Europe!

Likely, you can ask the same taxi driver who brought you to the overlooks to just drop you off directly back at your accommodation without an extra fee (as long as you are still within the agreed-upon time limit).

From there, grab your bags and make your way to the port to catch your ferry (or take the helicopter!) back to Algeciras.

Have more time in Ceuta? Ceuta itinerary alternatives

If you have more time in Ceuta, you can add these alternatives to your itinerary. Or, feel free to change up our 1 day itinerary with some of the activities below.

Reminder: You can see exactly where all the alternatives are by marking the boxes in the live map at the top of the article.

  • Hit up the beaches

Ceuta has 13+ miles (21 km) of coastline….which means there’s plenty of beaches for you to visit!

Some of the best ones include: La Ribera, San Amaro, El Chorrillo, and Parque de San Amaro (this one is great if you want to go windsurfing).

Alternatively, you can also spend the day relaxing and swimming in the saltwater pools of Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo (stop #4 in our itinerary above).

  • Get active on the García Aldave Mountain

On García Aldave Mountain (where the San Isabel the II overlook is located), there is an abundance of trails for hikers and mountain bikers.

Since we visited the mountain at night, we weren’t able to explore any of them ourselves. So, if you’d like to explore the trails yourself, your best bet is to get ask about them in the tourist office. This Lonely Planet link here also gives a bit more info about visiting the mountain.

  • Learn at the museums

There aren’t that many museums in Ceuta because the city isn’t that big, but there are a few you can visit like The Revellín Museum (or the Ceuta City Museum), Military Museum of the Legion, or The Royal Walls Museum.

Looking for your next stop? Where to go before or after Ceuta

Obviously, Ceuta isn’t super well-located for continued travel. The easiest places for you to go to/come from Ceuta would be Morocco or Spain.

Morocco — Tangier, Tetouan, or the blue city of Chefchaouen would be the closest cities of interest. From one of these, you could likely find transportation to your next stop in Morocco.

Spain — the only city in Spain connected by ferry to Ceuta is Algeciras. But from Algeciras, you can easily take a bus to Gibraltar or Málaga (and from Málaga , you can get basically anywhere else in southern Spain including the classic Andalusian cities of Granada, Seville, or Cordoba).

Seville — if you are further exploring Spain’s Andalusia region, you shouldn’t miss a visit to Seville. You can even visit Seville in one day!

Madrid — if you are passing by Madrid during your travels around Spain, check out this great article with 2 Days in Madrid Itinerary !

   Bonus tips for visiting Ceuta

  • English isn’t widely spoken, so it may be wise to brush up on your rusty high school Spanish. Otherwise, the people in the tourist office speak English and can surely help you with whatever you need.
  • Be a smart, safe traveler. We felt perfectly safe while in Ceuta, but we heard there were some places in Ceuta you wouldn’t want to visit at night. Overall, Ceuta is poorer than the rest of Spain, so just be aware of your surroundings. Read more of our travel safety tips here .
  • Get your visa. Do you need a visa to visit Europe’s Schengen area? Then you’ll also need a visa to visit Ceuta.
  • Book your accommodation in advance. Like we said, there aren’t a ton of options for accommodation in Ceuta. So, the best thing you can do is book in advance. Click here to check and compare prices and availability for accommodation in Ceuta.
  • See our 6 Days Ceuta, Gibraltar, and Málaga itinerary . Seriously, it’s a great itinerary and if you’re in the area, you’ll won’t want to miss it!

Gday! My bro and I followed your one day itinerary with a few additions as we had a couple of days in Ceuta. We walked from the port, stopped off for breakfast in Plaza de Africa and headed off on a route which took us all the way around to the easternmost point of Ceuta (following the main road which had a lovely walking lane all the way) and back round to the central cuidad. Thanks guys! Happy adventuring! 🙂

Hey Elliot – glad to hear the itinerary helped! Since you spent a few days there, if you have any other recommendations beyond what’s here, feel free to drop them in 🙂

hello – great article. I’m looking at the helicopter option and I can’t find prices less than 80euros. thanks

Hello! Thank you for your comment! Yeah, following this website helity.es, that’s about the price I can find as well. As far as I know, that’s the only helicopter option I can see from Europe to Africa. And to be honest, it’s pretty cheap for a helicopter ride that is also used as transportation to another continent. Maybe they have promotions for future dates? Good luck with your search!

10 fun day trips from Rota, Spain to include in your trip

May 8, 2023 | Posted in: Spain

Quite a few years ago, I spent a holiday in Rota in the province of Andalucia in Spain . While the town itself was rather small and there weren't that any things to do in Rota, it did make for a great base. Here are tips for 10 day trips from Rota.

4. Gibraltar

5. sierra de grazalema natural park, 6. jerez de la frontera, 9. fuengirola, 10. marbella, don't forget travel insurance, 10 fun day trips from rota spain.

day trips from rota spain

If you’ve only got one day, however, you’ll need to prioritize. Sevilla is the capital city of Andalucia, and there is so much to see.

Fans of architecture generally love Sevilla. There are some amazing examples of Mudéjar architecture (buildings influenced by the mixing of European and North African styles) including the stunning Alcazar, the king’s royal palace.

Sevilla is also brimming with Gothic buildings, such as the spectacular Catedral de Sevilla (Europe’s 3rd largest cathedral, and the largest Gothic church in the world!), beside the Alcazar. The Sevilla belltower is called the Giralda and it’s a pretty amazing blend of Muslim and Renaissance architecture, right next to the Gothic cathedral. It’s the former minaret for the mosque that used to be stationed where the cathedral is.

As well as sight-seeing though, it’s a good idea to make time to meander through Sevilla’s narrow winding streets. Walk past artisanal shops, gushing fountains and extravagant plazas, all buzzing with life.

The Triana district has stunning hand-painted ceramics, the old town area of Barrio Santa Cruz is home to the medieval Jewish quarter, and Macarena (the neighborhood, not the extremely catchy song!) has some fantastic markets.

Cádiz

The sea is such an important part of life here, as it surrounds the city almost entirely. The seafood is to die for, with thriving fish markets, and the beaches are beautiful. Playa de la Caleta in the old town is a great spot to see the sunset from, but there are over 76 beaches in total so plenty to choose from if this one is overcrowded!

One of the best things about Cádiz is its relaxing, free and easy-going atmosphere. The pace of life here is calm and un-rushed, the residents being mostly liberal and tolerant. Every spring, the entire city throws an enormous party with the Carnaval de Cádiz. Costumes, music, face-paint, theatre and political commentary make this one of the most exciting festivals in Spain.

cities near rota spain

Spanning both sides of the mountain gorge is the famous Puente Nuevo, the ‘new bridge’, built about 200 years ago. This is Ronda’s main feature and an impressive sight. A fun walk takes you down through the lush green valley to the river Guadalevín, where nature-lovers may spot lesser kestrels, crag martins and endemic Spanish fir trees.

The town’s main export (which may not go down quite as well with the nature-lovers) is bull-fighting, which was basically invented here at the end of the 18th century. You can explore the world-famous bullfighting museum and bullring, which is still used today.

Located on the southern coast of Spain, Gibraltar is a small peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean. It’s a totally one-off place, with a unique cocktail of cultures that can be found nowhere else on the planet.

It’s not a part of Spain, but a British overseas territory – a visit to Gibraltar can feel like a trip to a seaside resort in the south of England, with its red telephone boxes and fish and chips. Or it would do, if it weren’t for its sweltering heat, Palladian architecture and wild Barbary macaques!

One of the most recognizable features of the landscape is the immense and overbearing Rock of Gibraltar that looms over the town at its base, and there’s a helpful lift to get you to the top. You can also take a tour of the rock or go dolphin watching in Gibraltar.

The people here speak both Spanish and English, and often swap languages mid-sentence!

Traveling here from Rota takes about 1 hour 40 by road, and of course, you’ll need your passport to leave the country and British currency.

Sierra de Grazalema

You won’t find it teeming with tourists – in fact, the reserve is a total hidden gem. What you will find are tree-topped peaks, lush mountain streams, oak forests, dramatic gorges, and charming, authentic villages. And vultures.

There’s the deep Garganta Verde canyon with its network of cave complexes, including one cave with the largest bat population in Spain! The small village of Zahara is another must-see for its magical white buildings nestled on the side of the mountain, overlooking a stunning man-made lake.

It’s a wonderful park to visit if you’re planning a break in your itinerary from the town experience, and one of the best places for outdoor pursuits, from canyoning, hiking, kayaking to mountain biking and caving.

day trips rota

Sherry translates literally as ‘jerez’ in Spanish. It’s a fortified wine made from grapes that grow near the city, and you can book informative sherry tours at any of the many bodegas (wineries) which have brilliant reviews. These don’t tend to run in August however when the industry mostly closes down for a month.

This city is home to a particular breed of Spanish horses, and you can see these at shows at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. For motorcycling enthusiasts, there’s also an annual motorcycle Grand Prix at the world-famous Circuito de Jerez, where off-season Formula One races are also held.

córdoba

It was once the largest city of Roman Spain, and the center of the western Islamic empire so it is bursting with history and unique architecture. Its crown jewel is an extraordinary building called La Mezquita, which is now one of Spain’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It also features hundreds of ‘arcos’ (arches) and these arcos are supported by columns of jasper, marble, onyx and granite.

Originally a huge mosque built over 1000 years ago, the building is now the city’s cathedral although Muslims have been lobbying the church to allow them to pray there for years. It is an impressive sight and alone is worth the trip to Córdoba.

tarifa

Tarifa’s beaches are world-class. The fact it sits at the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean means the coast has a one-off quality here. It’s a great spot for water sports with high surf, and the huge expanse of white sand is simply dreamy. You also could see dolphins, orcas and sometimes even sperm whales.

For a bit of history, check out the village of Bolonia which you can find nearby, where the Roman ruins of the 2000-year-old Baelo Claudia site stand testament to the region’s fascinating past.

fuengirola

A huge amount of recent development makes this town a fairly crowded tourist destination, and it’s hard to imagine that it used to be a humble fishing village. Today, visitors are pulled in by its seven kilometers (five miles) of sandy beach, great shopping facilities, good local food, and popular bars.

It has an interesting past, and one relic of this is the 10th century Sohail Castle. In ancient times, the town of Fuengirola was known as Suel, which later changed to Suhayl, hence the name of the castle. Today, you can see and visit the castle, which also hosts music concerts and performances.

marbella

However, as well as the sand, sea and nightlife, Marbella is a beautiful network of white lanes decked out with blooming flower-boxes, and has a hidden side that is well worth exploring. With the picturesque Sierra Blanca mountains as a backdrop, it is simply beautiful, especially out of season.

Marbella’s ancient walled historic town districts are almost exactly the same as they would have been back in the 16th century. A great area to wander through Castilian Renaissance plazas and past buildings with beautiful facades and fresco murals.

If you do want to embrace Marbella’s inner chic, make sure you get to the Golden Mile (although it’s actually four miles in total!). Here you can enjoy luxurious villas, five-star hotels, top restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.

Plan for the best, prepare for the worst. Travel insurance has you covered in case (part of) your trip gets canceled, you get sick or hurt abroad, and sometimes even when your electronics break or get stolen. I always make sure I'm covered every trip I go on.

Don't have travel insurance yet? Check out SafetyWing. They offer super flexible plans that you can even sign up for while you're already on your trip. On top of that, they were the first travel insurance to cover COVID, and when I got COVID, they reimbursed all of my expenses without making a fuss. Their customer support team is great and I can personally recommend them.

I would consider staying in Rota, Sofie, but Seville makes for a great sleepover too. Really enjoyed my time there recently. Wrote about it here:

I definitely want to get back to Seville one day. Maybe even combine it with the south of Portugal.

Becky Padmore says

It looks like a great town to visit, cute lizard shot!

It is, and thanks! We saw lizards there all the time and as you can see they even managed to sneak in through a little crack in the door:-)

Jessica of HolaYessica says

I lived in Sevilla for a while and visited some of the quiet towns around it (but not Rota specifically). I’m much more a city girl, so I’m not sure I’d stay in a small town, although they are lovely to visit. If you didn’t stay in Sevilla long enough to eat some of its amazing tapas, you definitely have to go back to see more. The food is so good (and so cheap!) there.

In definitely need to go back to Sevilla. I feel like I haven’t experienced it as I should’ve. Might be something for a Spanish road trip.

Escape Hunter says

I’ve seen Sevilla and Cadiz from the air. Would love to return and thoroughly visit them and photograph the attractions.

I’d love to go back some time as well to take the time for both places.

15 Epic Day Trips From Marbella (A Local’s Top Picks)

This expert local list includes the best trips from Marbella. All of them are less than 2 hours one way, so you can make the most of the day out!

I love a day trip from Marbella because I can visit anywhere from small but charming whitewashed towns to important national parks.

Marbella is a beautiful destination, and there’s no doubt why many travellers decide to visit it – its pretty old town, golden sand beaches, and vibrant atmosphere are some of the few reasons that make Marbella worth visiting.

However, if you’re staying in the city longer than a weekend, I highly recommend going on day trips from Marbella to some of the many incredible destinations inside and outside Costa del Sol.

Some of my favourite excursions from Marbella are:

  • Granada (best for a cultural day trip)
  • Mijas Pueblo (best for discovering one of Andalusia’s white villages)
  • Parauta and Sierra de las Nieves (best for a day in nature)

Wondering about other epic day trips from Marbella? Let’s dive in!

The best day trips from Marbella

1. fuengirola.

seafront promenade fuengirola

• Distance: 30 minute drive

Fuengirola is one of the closest towns to Marbella, which makes it an easy day trip.

The best thing to do in Fuengirola is to visit the beach because it’s where you’ll find some of the best beaches in Costa del Sol .

Fuengirola has plenty of beaches, and the most popular is Fuengirola Beach since it’s close to the centre. However, you can also find quieter beaches like Carvajal Beach, which is just outside Fuengirola town.

Apart from spending a day on the beach, other activities to do in Fuengirola include visiting Sohail Castle , seeing the Mosque, and exploring the town centre.

Sohail Castle is the main attraction in Fuengirola. Walking on the walls of this castle is amazing because you can enjoy beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.

If you’re planning to visit the castle in the summer, check online if there is any event going on. The castle sometimes hosts concerts and live performances.

If you’re visiting Fuengirola with kids, you want to check out Fuengirola’s Zoo (called Bioparc Fuengirola ) and Aquamijas Water Park.

Overall, there aren’t many landmarks in the town, so you might want to spend the other half-day of your day in Mijas Pueblo . If you don’t have a car, the M-122 bus, which you can take at Fuengirola bus station, goes from Fuengirola to Mijas Pueblo.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Fuengirola : The easiest way to go to Fuengirola from Marbella is by car. The car journey only takes 30 minutes via AP-7. Alternatively, you can also get the L-60 bus towards Fuengirola from Marbella Center.

2. Mijas Pueblo

a view from Mijas Pueblo viewpoint at sunset

If you’re looking for a traditional Pueblo Blanco (whitewashed town) to visit from Marbella, Mijas Pueblo is a fantastic option.

Mijas Pueblo is a charming town between Benalmadena and Fuengirola in the mountains. The town is known for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, boutique shops and restaurants, and picturesque whitewashed streets.

One of the must-see attractions in Mijas Pueblo is Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, a chapel with a cave shrine. Even if you aren’t religious, the chapel is definitely worth a visit for its beauty.

Next to the chapel, you’ll also find a stunning viewpoint overlooking the coast. It’s my favourite place to watch the sunset.

During your time in Mijas, don’t miss the opportunity to try “almendras garrapiñadas” (caramel almonds), a traditional snack in Malaga and its towns. You’ll usually see street vendors selling these.

In my opinion, Mijas is one of the best villages near Marbella and also an excellent place for nature lovers, as there are a few hiking trails with scenic views.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Mijas Pueblo : The fastest way to go there is by car. The car journey only takes 30 minutes via AP-7. You can also access Mijas Pueblo by public transport, but you’ll have to take two buses and walk.

3. Estepona

beach promenade in Estepona, Spain

Estepona is one of the best destinations for a day trip from Marbella. Not only is it close, but it has a wide range of activities to do.

Start your day in Estepona by visiting Estepona Orchid House , a modern glass dome home to a botanical garden with orchids, other flowers, and a waterfall. It’s a lovely place to wander around and take photos.

Then make your way to Estepona Old Town . It won’t disappoint you! It’s considered the most beautiful old town in Costa del Sol – whitewashed buildings, flower pots, plaques commemorating local poets and many other minor elements that make it so special.

After a walk with stops on the way to take photos, visit Plaza de las Flores de Estepona and enjoy some tapas on an outdoor terrace.

Other activities to add to your day trip are going on the street art route to see impressive murals across the town or walking on the beach promenade to contemplate the coastal views and see interesting sculptures.

For a family activity, check out Selwo Aventura , a safari with over 2000 animals and adventure activities such as taking the zipline, archery, or walking on suspension bridges. Selwo Aventura is about 15 minutes before arriving at Estepona by car.

Although it’s considered a family attraction, it’s for any traveller who loves animals. I’ve been to Selwo Aventura a few times, and I can say it’s much better than Selwo Marina in Benalmadena.

zebras at selwo aventura, estepona

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Estepona : The easiest way to get to Estepona from Marbella is by car. The car journey only takes 30 minutes via AP-7. Alternatively, you can take the L-79 bus from the Marbella bus station. The bus journey takes over an hour.

A panoramic view of Casares, Malaga, Spain.

• Distance: 45 minute drive

Situated on a mountainside in the Sierra de Ronda, Casares is one of the best towns near Marbella. The town is home to historic buildings, museums and beautiful mountain views.

Start your day trip to Casares by visiting Casares Castle, a historic building built in the 9th century which served as a fortress for the Moorish rulers of the time. You can learn about the influence of the Moors in the town and enjoy the stunning countryside views.

Then, if you want to know more about the town, head to the Ethnohistory Museum, which is built in an 18th-century palace with a wide collection of artefacts that tell the history of Casares.

In addition to these activities, wander the centre of the town to discover other pieces of architecture like Arco medieval Arrabal, a Medieval arch, pretty streets and viewpoints.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Casares : There are two options to travel from Marbella to Casares. The first option is driving 45 minutes via AP-7, and the second option is taking the L-77 bus, which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

malaga port view

• Distance: 50 minute drive

One of the best day trips from Marbella is Malaga. There are many things to do in Malaga in a day – from visiting beautiful historic buildings to enjoying the food scene and relaxing at the beach.

Alcazaba de Malaga is an unmissable attraction. This impressive fortress palace dates back to the 14th century and was influenced by the Moors in the Spanish Peninsula, especially in the south of Spain.

Walking through the Alcazaba is an experience – its jasmine-scented gardens, beautiful fountains, detailed architecture, and panoramic views make it one of the best landmarks in the city.

Other historic buildings to check out during your day trip to Malaga are the Roman Theatre, Gibralfaro Castle and the Cathedral of Malaga. However, if you don’t have much time, choose Alcazaba over Gibralfaro Castle because it has much more to see!

If you love museums, two important museums to visit in Malaga are Picasso Museum Malaga and Carmen Thyssen.

In addition to these cultural activities, you can also try traditional dishes like “boquerones al limón” (fried anchovies with a splash of lemon) and wine in El Pimpi Bodega, walk on Muelle Uno (Malaga’s port), which is home to shops and restaurants and hit La Malagueta Beach.

The best way to end your trip to Malaga is to watch the sunset from Gibralfaro’s viewpoint, but if you don’t feel like walking the hill, head to one of the many rooftop terraces across the city. Valeria Terrace is my go-to!

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Malaga : There are two options to travel to Malaga from Marbella. One is getting the Avanza L-307 bus which takes 45 minutes and leaves you at Malaga bus station. The second option is driving via AP-7 or the old road, which takes you through the coast.

6. Parauta and the Bosque Encantado

Couple at the Kiss me in Parauta bench.

• Distance: 1 hour drive

If you love visiting off-the-beaten-track destinations, I highly recommend visiting Parauta . This small village located in Sierra de las Nieves is charming in all the senses.

Its cobblestone streets with white buildings, Moorish arches and natural surroundings make it a special day trip from Marbella.

Although I love wandering its streets, my favourite part is the Enchanted Forest (Bosque Encantado), a 3.5 km hiking trail where you can find wooden statues like fairies, dwarfs and other creatures. It’s a good place to visit with kids.

The best time to visit it is November when you can see the beautifully golden brown leaves and spot chestnuts.

Since Parauta is small, you can also visit other nearby villages like Juzcar and Igualeja.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Parauta : The only way to travel to Parauta from Marbella is by car. You’ll have to drive via A-397.

a view of gaucin, one of the charming towns in malaga spain

Gaucín is a pretty village nestled in the mountains of Malaga and a fantastic half-day trip from Marbella.

This is a place to visit slowly and admire the incredible views and few landmarks the town has to offer.

Castillo del Águila (Eagle’s Castle) is the main attraction in Gaucin. This 10th-century historic building and its ruins can be visited for free, and it overlooks the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. Another important building is Ermita del Santo Niño.

After visiting all the sights, stop at the central square for some tapas.

It won’t take you more than half a day to explore the town, so it’s worth adding a nearby town on the way, such as Casares.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Gaucín : There isn’t public transport to Gaucín from Marbella, so the only option is driving. The car journey takes approximately 1 hour.

8. Gibraltar

top of gibraltar, one of the best things to do in gibraltar

• Distance: 1 hour and 10 minute drive

Marbella isn’t very far from Gibraltar, so you may want to tick off another place during your visit to Southern Spain. It’s a fun Marbella day trip for all ages.

Gibraltar is a very interesting destination to visit, and despite its small size, you’ll be amazed by its views, history and culture.

First, there are two languages in Gibraltar: British English and “Llanito”, a mixture of Spanish and English. Second, it belongs to the UK, although it’s situated on the Spanish Peninsula. Third, its location makes Gibraltar a place rich in culture which has been influenced by Spanish, British, Maltese and Moroccan people.

An unmissable thing to do in Gibraltar is to go to Top of the Rock and Upper Nature Reserve Park, where you can see Gibraltar’s monkeys (macaques), go to St Michael’s Cave , walk in the Mediterranean Steps and get a breathtaking view of Spain, Gibraltar and Africa from one single point.

Other activities to do in Gibraltar in a day include wandering the city centre, home to many high-street shops and restaurants, visiting Sacred Heart Church and going to Catalan Bay – one of the most vibrant areas in Gibraltar.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Gibraltar : The car journey from Marbella to Gibraltar is 1 hour and 10 minutes drive via AP-7. Other transport options are getting two buses – Marbella to Algeciras and Algeciras to Gibraltar. While you might want to drive there, you can also take a private tour to Gibraltar .

A view of the main bridge in ronda spain

Nestled in the mountainside, Ronda is a popular day trip from Marbella and Malaga. This town is unique in many ways. Its rich in culture old town, its picturesque views of Tajo de Ronda (Ronda’s Gorge), and its wine culture make it a fantastic day trip.

Despite being a town, Ronda is home to many attractions, and although it’s possible to visit Ronda in a day , it’s also a great place to stay a few days and soak up its vibrant atmosphere. I’ve been many times but never actually stayed, so it’s on my list!

If you’re visiting Ronda for a day, your itinerary will be packed with activities.

Start the day by exploring the old town of Ronda. Here’s where you can find most attractions, including Palacio de Mondragón, a 14th-century museum that used to be a royal residence.

Nowadays, this palace is home to the Archaeological Museum of Ronda, the perfect place to learn about the first human settlements in Andalucia and contemplate pieces of pottery and other objects.

After this, enjoy a meal with a view at Hotel Don Miguel and taste Ronda’s wines. This place is magical and one of my favourites to eat while contemplating the views of Ronda’s Bridge. Alternatively, opt for a wine tour and explore some of the best wineries in the province of Malaga .

Complete your day trip by watching the sunset in Tajo de Ronda, one of the most romantic places in Costa del Sol.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Ronda : You can either drive via A-397, which will take you approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes or take the Avanza L-304 bus from Marbella bus station. Also, you can book this full-day Ronda tour from Marbella .

juzcar the smurf village in spain

If you’re looking to visit a unique town, you need to visit Júzcar, known as “pueblo pitufo”, which is translated as Smurf Town.

Juzcar was a whitewashed town. However, the town was painted blue after filming the Smurfs film. Although locals could have repainted their houses in white, they decided to leave them in blue. Since then, it has become a popular town, and many tourists visit it every year.

One of the best things to do in Juzcar is to go on the Smurf graffiti walking route, in which you can see 14 different graffiti of Smurf characters as well as statues of Papa Smurf and Smurfette. This is a great route to take with kids.

During your visit to Juzcar, stop by the central square to enjoy some tapas and visit El Jardon or La Torrichela viewpoints.

On top of these activities, if you love hiking, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful hiking trails in this town, so it may be something else to add to your itinerary.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Juzcar : The only way to travel from Marbella to Juzcar is by car via A-397. Something important to know is that the road to Juzcar isn’t great, so my advice is to only drive there if you’re an experienced driver.

11. Setenil de las Bodegas

Setenil de las bodegas whitewashed town in cadiz

• Distance: 1 hour and 20 minute drive

Situated on the border between the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz, Setenil de las Bodegas is a picturesque whitewashed town that has become a popular day trip destination in recent years.

Although I think there aren’t many things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas, what makes it special is that some buildings have been built into the rock which overhangs above the river Guadalporcún. These two streets in Setenil are common spots for photos and food, as there are plenty of small tapas bars.

During your trip to Setenil, it’s worth checking out the viewpoints across the town. There are many of them, and each one offers a beautiful bird’s-eye view.

Since it’s a very small town, you’ll want to visit other nearby places like Ronda, Olvera, and the ruins of Acinipo on the same day to make the most of your day out.

setenil de las bodegas viewpoint

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Setenil de las Bodegas : The only way to get from Marbella to Setenil is by car. The car journey is between 1 hour and 20 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes.

12. Sierra de las Nieves

sierra de las nieves in malaga

An excellent day trip from Marbella for nature lovers is Sierra de las Nieves National Park . This natural park has plenty to offer, including discovering unique flora and protected wildlife like the golden eagle, the wild cat and the otter.

Hiking in Sierra de las Nieves is a true experience, and there are scenic trails for all levels and ages. If this is your first time exploring Sierra de las Nieves, check out the AllTrails app for route suggestions or go to the visitor centre for some advice from a ranger.

In Sierra de las Nieves, you can also explore beautiful white towns.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Sierra de las Nieves : You’ll need a car to travel to Sierra de las Nieves from Marbella. The journey takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

A sign that reads Mar Mediterraneo Tarifa, Southern Spain

If you love water sports, surfing in particular, Tarifa is the best day trip from Marbella for you.

This coastal town in the province of Cadiz is known as one of Europe’s best places to surf. The wind conditions are just perfect for practising this sport.

However, if you aren’t into surfing, there are many other fantastic things to do in Tarifa, such as exploring the town centre, horse riding on the beach, and visiting Baelo Claudia, an archaeological complex 30 minute drive from Tarifa.

The beaches are gorgeous, but I’ve found them too windy every time I visit Tarifa, so I prefer other coastal towns to spend a day at the beach.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Tarifa : Drive via AP-7 and Autovía del Mediterráneo/A-7 for about 1 hour and 20 minutes or take the Avanza L-530 bus, which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

olvera, a whitewashed town in the province of cadiz, spain

• Distance: 1 hour and 40 minute drive

Olvera is a hidden gem town in the north of Cadiz with impressive views, picturesque whitewashed and cobblestone streets and a few architectural buildings.

Start your day in Olvera by visiting Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, a Neoclassical church that dates back to the 18 th century.

There’s a lot of history behind this church as it used to be a former church with a Mudejar and Gothic style, which was demolished by the orders of the Dukes of Osuna. Another landmark to add to your list is Olvera Castle.

Olvera is also an amazing town for anyone who loves photography because there are plenty of photo spots, including the Olvera sign.

If you’re after the best views of the town, go to El Peñon Sagrado Corazón. Here, you can enjoy beautiful views of Cadiz, Malaga, and Seville mountains.

Last but not least, the town is known for its high-quality olive oil production. If you love olive oil, there’s no better place to go on an olive oil and tasting experience.

Although Olvera is an excellent day trip all year round, spring is my favourite season to visit this enchanting town, as this is the time when you’ll find the streets decorated with bright geranium flowers.

You can definitely spend at least half a day in Olvera, but you can visit nearby towns on the same day. For example, you can also add Arcos de la Frontera or Setenil de las Bodegas to your itinerary.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Olvera : The fastest and most convenient way to travel to Olvera from Marbella is by car. You’ll have to drive via A-355, A-357 and Carretera de Antequera/A-384. I wouldn’t advise taking public transport because it’ll take you too long and you’ll have to switch multiple buses.

15. Granada

granada city centre

• Distance: 2 hours drive

Granada is one of my favourite day trips from Costa del Sol because of all the historical buildings and monuments you can visit in one day.

While you won’t see everything in one day in Granada, you can definitely discover some of its main attractions.

The most well-known attraction is the Alhambra, and it’s one of the top reasons to visit Granada . This palace and fortress complex is one of a kind – its stunning Moorish architecture, manicured gardens and history will make you fall in love with it. I’ve visited Alhambra more than three times and been amazed by it every single time!

On a day trip to Granada, you can also visit the Cathedral, walk in the Albaicin neighbourhood and end your day at the San Nicolás viewpoint. It gets very busy, but the views and atmosphere are worth it. You can enjoy live flamenco while admiring the Alhambra.

🚗 How to get from Marbella to Granada : The quickest way to travel to Granada from Marbella is by car. The car journey takes 2 hours. You can also travel to Malaga by bus and get the train to Granada from there.

Frequently asked questions about day trips from Marbella, Spain

How do i get from marbella to morocco.

You’ll have to drive to Tarifa, take the ferry to Tanger, and then from Tanger to Morocco. An alternative option is to book a guided tour, but the journey will be the same duration or even longer.

Can I make a day trip to Gibraltar from Marbella?

Yes, it’s actually very easy to go on a day trip to Gibraltar from Marbella, especially if you drive there. However, other options are taking the bus from Marbella to Algeciras and then Algeciras to Gibraltar or booking a guided tour.

Conclusion on the best day trips from Marbella

There are many incredible places to visit near Marbella, so if you have time, go on one of these day trips.

My top advice is to rent a car , especially if you want to go on more than a day trip because it’s difficult to access some places without a car or it takes you much longer to get to them.

Another option is to check tours which take you to one or two places on the same day so you can see as much as possible. Of course, the downside is you won’t get to spend as much time as you want in certain places. This is something that happens with tours most time.

On another note, you might have heard it’s possible to visit Morocco from Marbella, and although this is true, I wouldn’t recommend going on a day trip from Marbella to Morocco because you’ll spend most of your time travelling rather than exploring.

If you want to go from Morocco to Marbella, spend at least two days in Morocco to enjoy everything the city offers and maximise your trip.

Another mentioned day trip is Tangier, but it takes about 3 hours (one way) from Marbella, so again, I don’t recommend it.

Top 12 Day Trips From Malaga, Spain

Get a taste of Andalusia in Nerja, Ronda, Antequera, and Marbella

day trips from spain to africa

Malaga , a mid-sized city in Spain's southern Andalusia region , offers a just-right combination of culture and beach—plus, it's the perfect starting point to explore southern Spain. The city's major airport and convenient bus and train stations make traveling around Andalusia as simple as checking the times, booking the tickets, and starting on your Spanish adventure. Renting a car is also a good option and in many cases the best way to make a quick trip to these towns.

You can take organized tours to Morocco, Seville, and Granada, and there is a direct train to Osuna, where HBO's Game of Thrones  was filmed.

There are ferries to Morocco from Malaga , but the voyage takes about eight hours. It is quicker to take a bus to Tarifa, about a two-hour drive from Malaga, and get a ferry from there; these ferry routes take only about 35 minutes. The only city you can reach on a day trip from Malaga is Tangier, so consider a longer Morocco tour from Spain .

A day trip from Malaga to Morocco is virtually impossible if you are traveling without a group and guide. But Morocco warrants a longer stay than a day, and you could certainly plan that by yourself (the country is a lot more tourist-friendly than it used to be).

Granada's proximity to Malaga makes it a perfect day trip from the city. It's about an hour-and-a-half drive, and it is easy to reach Granada from Malaga by bus (there are no trains), or you could take a guided tour or rent a car and drive yourself. Granada welcomes tourists, so you could easily visit Granada independently, without a tour.

But one big advantage of a guided tour is the visit to the Alhambra. It's always included on a guided tour and is the high point of the trip. If you are not on a tour, you will most likely have to wait in a long line to get in, and the tour lets you jump the line.

Nerja, a bit less than an hour's drive from Malaga, is a popular beach town on the Costa del Sol, but its caves set it apart from the other coastal towns of Andalusia. The caves stretch for about three miles. The caves of Nerja are one of the most visited sites in Spain. Its beachfront promenade sits high on a promontory and affords spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding Sierra Almijara, Tejeda, and Almira Mountains.

Ronda is about a 1.5-hour drive from Malaga, is a little off the beaten path, making a guided tour an especially good option. Ronda is the birthplace of bullfighting and has a great winemaking tradition, but it's most famous for the centuries-old bridges over the Tajo Gorge. It's also got those iconic whitewashed Andalusian houses, a hallmark of southern Spain.

Ronda is small and easy to get around by yourself. If you have a car, the drive to Ronda is interesting, particularly if you drive via Marbella.

The bus and the train both take just under two hours each way. That's a lot of travel time in one day and requires making sure you get your logistics just right. With four hours in one day taken up by travel, you want to make sure you get the earliest bus or train you can. A guided tour is also probably a little quicker, as is driving yourself.

Seville is the most popular city in the south of Spain, but it takes about two hours to get there from Malaga, and that makes it a very long day trip. It's really best to make it at least an overnight trip from Malaga because of the distance. If you are attempting to do it in a day, a guided tour is your best bet. You can get there on the train in about two hours or on the bus in about three. Driving would also take about two hours.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, let alone Spain, Seville is a vibrant magnet for flamenco, bullfighting, tapas, and renowned architecture. If you are not taking a tour, find a walking tour to really get a good glimpse of the city along with some commentary about what you're seeing.

Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is most famous for being the birthplace of sherry. It is also well known for its horse shows. If you can stay the night, Jerez is also good for flamenco and, yes, tapas. As is true across Spain, this is a late-night activity. Stroll through old Jerez along its cobblestone streets and take in its Baroque churches and typical Spanish plazas.

Getting to Jerez by train takes about four hours, and that makes it impossible to visit for just a day unless you drive yourself, which still takes about 2.5 hours. Unless you really are squeezing it into your itinerary, it is best to stay overnight.

The world's been talking about Osuna since "Game of Thrones" was filmed there. Keep an eye out for the old university and bullring, which played the parts of Dorne and Mereen. The "Thrones" connection is its main attraction, so if you're not a fan, this is a candidate for skipping.

You can get to Osuna from Malaga on the train in about two hours or you can drive, which is a bit quicker; you can get there in your car in about 1.5 hours.

Cordoba is a popular city to visit in Andalusia, after Seville and Granada—but its beachy old town and one of the world's most important historical mosques makes it an important stop for visitors. It's full of whitewashed houses and buildings amid patio gardens bursting with blooms, a quintessential postcard of Andalusia. Islamic, Jewish, and Christian cultures all merged here to form a true Spanish experience.

You can drive to Cordoba from Malaga in about two hours, and that's pushing it for a day trip since there is so much to see here. Taking the train, which zooms across the distance, takes less than an hour and is the best option.

Visit Gibraltar , it's a territory of the United Kingdom. You can take dolphin- or whale-watching tours , too, and don't miss a trip up to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, where you will get a spectacular view of Africa.

The best way to get to Gibraltar from Malaga is by bus. It takes about three hours and deposits you right at the border of Spain and Gibraltar, and then you walk across the border. Pretty cool.

If you want to experience what medieval Spain was like, Antequera is just what you're looking for. It's 30 miles from Malaga and a perfect day trip. Its architecture reflects its Roman, Moorish, and Baroque Spanish heritage. You can get there from Malaga via the bus, which makes several trips every day, as does the high-speed train. Both take less than an hour. If you're driving, it's about a half-hour away from Malaga.

Andalusia is most famous for its whitewashed villages, with these iconic houses in sparkling white with red-tiled roofs marching up and down the twisting, narrow streets of many of the towns. They form a perfect canvas for the cascading blooms all along the street and on the patios.  Frigiliana is one of the best examples of a typical whitewashed town, and it is an easy hour's drive from Malaga. You can also get to Frigiliana on the bus but you must go through Nerja to do that. The whole trip takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

If you want glam, Marbella is the place you want to be. It has nightlife, spectacular golf, stunning beaches, and upscale shopping. And if you want some history with your luxury, walk around the Marbella's Moorish Old Town, where you'll find interesting boutiques and charming restaurants around the Plaza de los Naranjos.

If you're driving, it takes about 50 minutes from Malaga. If you're taking public transportation, you can catch a bus to Marbella at the Malaga Airport about every half hour, and it takes about 40 minutes to get there.

American Airlines flight headed to Spain diverted to Boston over windshield crack: Reports

day trips from spain to africa

A Spain-bound American Airlines flight from New York City made an emergency landing at Boston's Logan International Airport Wednesday night "due to a maintenance issue".

American Airlines Flight 94 took off from JFK Airport in New York City a little before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, according to FlightAware , and was headed to Madrid, Spain when it was diverted to Boston just two and half hours into the flight, landing at Logon Airport at 10:03 pm.

In a statement to USA TODAY, American Airlines said that the flight was diverted "due to a maintenance issue," and that it landed safely at Boston, where the "aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team."

CBS News, citing the Massachusetts State Police, reported that the flight was diverted because of a crack that appeared in the windshield. The state police did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for more information.

No one was injured in the incident and passengers on board the flight will re-depart for Madrid on a replacement aircraft, said American Airlines. The flight to Madrid is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EST Thursday from Boston, according to FlightAware.

Customers were forced to spend the night in Boston though the airlines provided hotel accommodations overnight.

American Airlines apologizes for inconvenience over diverted flight

The airlines also apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.

"We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," said the statement.

Recent airplane incidents

Wednesday's incident is the latest in a string of incidents that has reignited the debate on airline safety, especially with jets manufactured by Boeing. The issue first came to the forefront when an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon, to Ontario, California, made a dramatic emergency landing on Jan. 5 after a piece of the fuselage burst off at 16,000 feet.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew onboard deplaned safely in Portland but the flight, which was operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet, highlighted safety concerns with many airlines grounding several of their Boeing jets .

The aircraft in Wednesday's incident was a Boeing 777-200 jet, according to FlightAware.
