Zavier Simpson is back in the NBA. The former Michigan basketball captain signed a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday night. Simpson’s father, Quincy, reposted the report on social media.

Simpson had been playing with the G League’s Motor City Cruise in Detroit, averaging 20 points and 9.2 assists per game over 32 starts.

The 27-year-old point played at Michigan from 2016 to 2020. He was a three-year starter and two-time captain and left as the program’s all-time winningest player, a record since broken by his former teammate Eli Brooks.

Simpson has one prior stint in the NBA, having appeared in the final four games of the 2021-22 regular season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He scored 17 points in one game and dished out 11 assists in a another, finishing with averages of 11 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.3 rebounds.

He signed a training camp deal with the Detroit Pistons last summer but did not make the team. He’s also played for the affiliates of the Thunder and the Orlando Magic, in addition to a brief stint in a pro league in Puerto Rico last April. He was undrafted out of Michigan after helping the Wolverines reach the national championship game (in 2018) and two Sweet 16s under head coach John Beilein. Simpson’s senior season, Juwan Howard’s first as Michigan’s head coach, was not completed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Grizzlies play in Orlando on Saturday night and visit Detroit on Monday. Memphis, which has dealt with a slew of injuries, is 24-39 and in 13th place in the Western Conference.
