Moroccan Desert Adventure: River Canyons & Camels

It was an unforgettable tour and the amount of things we could see and do in only one week was unbelievable. Even though we spent a big part of the time driving, there were enough stops in between and I also got this strange feeling that time was passing more slowly on this trip, simply because we experienced so much. In the car, we could watch the scenery from the windows and people when driving through towns and villages. We could also take naps in the car, all in all it was a relaxing trip despite being full of adventure as well. Karim was a great guide, not least due to his humor and smiling. I also saw that he was good at dealing with different people within our group. He seemed to know almost everyone personally wherever we went, chatting briefly with people on our way. A few negatives though, a tiny part of the overall experience. We stopped 2-3 times shops for traditional handicraft (e.g. pottery) which I disliked as I'm not into shopping and found these stops too commercial. A stop at a place for making argan oil products was also too sales driven for my taste although I thought it was interesting to hear about the production process. Some of the women on the group bought something there, so they probably had a more positive view. There was also one stop at the end of the 4x4 excursion in the desert to listen to local music, which I think nobody particularly enjoyed. If you are going to Morocco for the first time, I would highly recommend this tour.

Toubkal Trek (3 days) Tour

Toubkal Trek (3 days)

Amazing trek! Definitely not easy but well worth. I went as a solo traveller with no issues. The first day was a little hike up a peak overlooking Imlil which was nice but could easily be skipped. Instead, I would spend that day going up Toubkal. I spent an extra night in the refuge because going up and down Toubkal in 2 days is quite intense, and I would recommend breaking it up (1 day ascent to refuge, 1 day up to Toubkal and back, 1 day return from refuge). Make sure you have hiking shoes too because it is steep, slippery and rocky. All the transport to and from Marrakech, food, water and accommodation was all sorted out provided without issue. My guide Ibrahim was an absolute legend and very nice, always looking out for me and willing to accommodate my wishes. Always felt safe and cared for.

Originally I had planned to go on a completely different trip with another company which was cancelled at short notice for Covid reasons. Almost simultaneously I received an e-mail from you advertising a range of trips and the Toukbal mountain trip was a perfect fit - one call later and your very helpful team had put the wheels in motion to see whether I could attend and in a couple of days I was booked on with some very helpful guidelines on what was required. Having just finished this excellent break I would like to say a big thank you to all in Explore - your business has had a tough 2 years and I am absolutely delighted that I booked with you. I doubt that I will do this trip again because the positive memories are so strong that they could not be repeated - but I will absolutely recommend the trip and your company to anyone and everyone. And I will now start looking through your brochure to see what I can do in 2022.

The best experience you can have in Morocco. Mustapha, our guide was the coolest, friendliest, kindest, most knowledgeable and accommodating person and he made our entire trip the best it could possibly be. We felt so safe and relaxed, leaving us to soak up the scenery and surroundings at ease and in great company. It was pure magic from start to finish and exceeded all expectations. An incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience that myself and my Mother will remember for the rest of our lives. Thank you so very much!

3 Days Sahara Adventure (Fes / Marrakech) Tour

3 Days Sahara Adventure (Fes / Marrakech)

Our 3 day Sahara adventure far exceeded our expectations! We were family of 5, 2 teenagers and 3 adults and everyone had an amazing time. Our guide Ali was personable, knowledgeable and made us feel welcome and well looked after. You cover a lot of ground in 3 days and you see some incredible sites which would not be possible without booking this tour. Our mini van was incredibly comfortable and Ali was a fabulous driver. The first night was spent at a desert camp and I highly recommend upgrading your accommodation, our glamming tent was luxurious and well worth it. The second night was spent in a more traditional Riad in the mountains and was equally as fabulous. We ate some incredible food along the way, learnt a lot about Morocco, its culture and traditions and its people. Upon our arrival in Marrakech Ali gave us a list of recommendations for things to do and places to go which have been amazing. As a family we would highly recommend this wonderful experience and enjoyed every moment of it. Thankyou Ali and Tour Radar for this unforgettable adventure.

I am not the kind of person who takes the time to write a review but in this case an exception is definitely necessary. Expectations were very much exceeded in every possible way. Our guide Mohammed was beyond amazing and can't express just how much I would recommend this tour/company/guide to anyone thinking of doing so. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable on all things local as well as Morocco in general and makes the seemingly longer drives go by in a flash. Worth every cent and then some.

Morocco 9 Days From Marrakech Desert and Imperial City

During our recent trip to Morocco, our experience was elevated by the exceptional service provided by our driver. From the moment we embarked on our journey, his professionalism, expertise, and genuine warmth made our exploration of Morocco truly unforgettable. The tour covered a diverse range of destinations, from the bustling streets of Marrakech to the serene landscapes of the High Atlas mountains and the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. We especially enjoyed our time in Erg Chebbi and the luxurious camp where we spent the night in the desert...

Ali was an incredible guide and I would thoroughly recommend booking with Morocco Joy Travel. We travelled with our 2 kids (8 &9) and Ali made it such a wonderful adventure for our family. He was so warm and kind, knowledgeable and thoughtful. We opted for the luxury accommodation and it surpassed our expectations. There was a lot of driving but the vehicle was very comfortable and Ali was so knowledgeable and a pleasure to tour with. We are left with wonderful memories of sunsets, fossil digging, sand dune exploring, camel riding, drum playing, spectacular scenery, delicious meals…thank you Ali…we cannot wait to visit again!

Things to know

The Atlas Mountains stretch for 1554 miles through North Africa. Heat of the desert combined with big peaks, luscious valleys, winding rivers, and vast forests creates an exquisite backdrop for a hiking trip.  The most popular summit of Atlas is Toubkal—at 13,671 ft, it’s the highest peak in the whole of North Africa. At 5,900 ft above sea level, you can find a small village Imlil, a good base for attempting to summit Toubkal as it lies at the end of the tarmac road, and is a natural place to hire mules for the trek. Traditional Berber villages of Imlil valley, the ease of access, and spectacular vistas overlooking miles on end of jagged peaks on one side and desert valleys on the other make this area a real must-do for avid hikers. Find out more about the best trails for hiking in the Atlas Mountain from Mohamed Toudaoui, mountain and desert guide.

Heart of Moroccan mountain tourism and the highest peak in North Africa

atlas mountains guided tour

This adventure will lead you to the highest peak in North Africa in only three days. As you head along the Ait Mizane Valley, you’ll d iscover rivers, traditional villages, pastoral shrines, and jaw-dropping vistas. The summit offers breathtaking 360° views over the surrounding green valleys and Anti-Atlas and the Sahara, as well as other summits in the area.

After arrival in Marrakech, your tour guides will transfer you to the little village of Imlil. Here you will be able to explore the village, meet some Berber people, and spend the night in a guesthouse.

Moroccan kasbah in Atlas Mountains, Morocco, Africa.Imlil is best known as a base for trekkers and mountaineers. As a village it is situated in a stunning location for Toubkal, this is the stopping off point for 90% of walkers or trekkers looking to climb the highest mountain in North Africa.

Begin your trek by heading along the Ait Mizane Valley, first passing the village of Armed and then heading to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Continue and cross the flood plains along old traditional mule tracks, and head up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. You’ll eventually reach the pastoral shrine symbolized by a white-painted boulder — the burial place of the king of the Jinns, which attracts hundreds of pilgrims every year. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Toubkal Refuge (3206m/10,500ft), your stop for the night.

Walking : 4-5 hours

Armed village in Morocco

Early in the morning, attempt to summit Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The route takes you up the south cirque, crossing a stream above the refuge. The hike is relatively straightforward, but the ice and the altitude will make the going quite difficult on occasion. Don’t doubt for a second that your efforts won’t be rewarded — the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile! Panoramas from the summit are unrestricted in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north, and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara! Retrace your steps down the mountain and head back towards Imlil before your guides transfer you back to Marrakech.

Hassan Errami

Amazing planning by Hassan to organise the trek to the peak of mount toubkal for me and my friends. Omar service and hospitality at the guest House was fantastic, with some amazing food. Rashid was a great guide throughout the whole trek. Overall it was a fantastic and unbelievable experience. Me and my friends thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of getting to the peak.

My dad and I went to Morocco and was able to have Hassan as our tour guide. He was very nice and by the end of the trip, he was like a brother to me. Having him as a guide made our experience so much better as we felt more integrated in the unique culture of Morocco. This made me want to come back again soon and if I return, I am for sure having Hassan as my tour guide again!

We had Hassan as a guide for 8 days.I could not have asked for a better guide or experience. Hassan made this a trip of a lifetime by showing us places & sites we would never have found on our own. Highly recommend this company.

I found this company in a Morocco travel blog with good reviews. Now I can return the favor to those who are traveling to Morocco. Excellent service, good price. They are 100% focused on customer satisfaction. They were all the time taking care of us and adapting the tour to our needs. Guide was excellent and his knowledge about the country, culture, people and traditions was excellent. Many thanks Hassan for such a nice experience in your country. Special thanks to our driver…. He made us feel safe and comfortable. Highly recommended company.

A rich experience as an adventure in the mountains of Moroccan high Atlas, lots of views in a special nature with a smooth climate, friendly people who are always ready to provide help , thank you Trekking Holidays Morocco, hope you try it fellas !!!

What you get on this adventure:

  • An experienced, English speaking, tour guide from Morocco with extensive knowledge of the area
  • Hot beverages
  • Accommodation in gites and camps
  • Mule to carry your staff
  • Transfer to and from the trailhead

What’s not included:

  • Transportation to and from Marrakech
  • Accommodations before and after your adventure

These hiking adventures are for intermediate hikers with previous experience with long-distance hiking and very good fitness.

You can expect to hike anywhere between four to eight miles per day. You might encounter an occasional steep descent and challenging switchback or loose footing. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude could make hiking quite difficult at moments. Keep in mind, the weather in summer can be very hot, and quite cold and changeable in the winter months.

Additional training recommendations include hiking for three days per week at least 12 weeks prior to your trip. Start with short hikes about one hour in length with a light daypack. Also, the altitude can really catch people off guard, so for a 72-hour period before your trip begins, ensure that you are consuming sufficient amounts of sodium and fluids.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

  • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 25-40L bag)
  • Hiking poles — optional
  • Crampons – during winter months, can be rented
  • Ice axe – during winter months, can be rented
  • Ski goggles – during winter months, can be rented
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Lightweight hiking boots or shoes
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Hiking pants
  • Hiking socks
  • Fleece jacket
  • Warm, down jacket
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Rain pants (depend of the season)
  • Comfortable shoes for camp
  • A three-season sleeping bag and mat
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

These tours include all meals on the trail. You can expect typical Moroccan dishes, such as tagine and couscous. Fresh produce and meat are usually bought in the mountains. Picnic or salads are usually served at noon, and warm cooked meals in the evening. If you have any dietary restrictions, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

You will be provided with safe drinking water while you’re in the mountains. We recommend you bring a flask or thermos to fill up with hot water or traditional mint tea as it will keep you warm and replenished throughout the day.

Group sizes and prices:

  • For this group adventure, the max guest to guide ratio is 6:1 with up to 12 people per group.
  • The cost per person decreases as the group grows, so it’s the perfect opportunity to hike with friends and family!
  • It takes a minimum of 2 people for the tour to operate.

Trekking in Atlas Mountain can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements.

Min. age requirements:

  • If you are older than 17, you’re good to go.
  • Minors younger than 17 may be permitted to join the hike on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

If your group has hikers under the age of 17 , contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

To get to Marrakech, most people fly into Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, just under 3 hours away, or into Marrakech Menara Airport. From there, you can rent a car or take a shuttle service.

Once you and your guide agree on the details of your itinerary, your guide will suggest the best place to meet in Marrakech. From there, you will head to Imil where your adventure begins!

In 2023, Ramadan will take place from 10th March to 8th April. While this is an interesting time to travel, you should expect that some restaurants will be closed. Your dinner will most likely be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

You will also have to spend you free time differently as activities might be limited during the day. However, the nights are very active as the fast ends at sundown.

57hours is committed to providing safe outdoor adventure experiences. We require all guides using our platform to have a COVID-19 safety plan and to make the details of that plan accessible to travelers. In most cases, group sizes will be reduced, guides will avoid overcrowded locations, and other safety measures will be met depending on the location and activity.

We also expect clients to respect local regulations and take measures to protect themselves, guides and the communities they’re travelling to. For more information on COVID-19 measures in Morocco, please refer to the official Visit Morocco website .

Please contact us if you have any questions or require further information. We are happy to provide you with the most up-to-date information!

Registration for an adventure with your guide requires a 30% non-refundable deposit. The balance of program fees will generally be due 90 days prior to the starting date of the program. It is your responsibility to adhere to the fee payment schedule. Late payment will result in cancellation of program reservations and forfeiture of all fees paid.

  • Only 10% of the total amount should be paid as a deposit upon booking. This deposit is non-refundable, but can be transferred to another 57hours adventure anytime in case the dates don’t suit you. This can be done by the end of the year.
  • Another 20% needs to be paid by the end of this year.
  • The remaining balance is due 3 months (90 days) prior to departure.

If you cancel the Booking anytime prior to thirty (30) calendar days in advance of the trip contemplated by the booking, you are entitled to a refund in the amount of fifty percent (50%) of the total amount paid when Booking.  After that deadline, you are not entitled to any refund.

In some cases, if you are required to forfeit your spot, you may find an acceptable replacement in which case your deposit and fees would transfer to your replacement without penalty.

Climb jbel toubkal, the highest mountain in north africa., sip tea on the veranda of les mouflons, a climber’s hut on the flanks of jbel toubkal., visit the port city of essaouira, famous for its fortified medina, “old city”— a unesco world heritage site..

In Morocco, the Atlas Mountains rise against the burnt-orange sunset, violet rays radiating across the wide desert plateaus, bleached white beaches, and pastel medieval buildings. As you walk across the sand, through the busy markets bustling with wild sounds, colors, and smells, through small mountain hamlets seemingly carved into the peaks, you can feel the antiquity of the land beneath your feet. To travel to Morocco is to be overcome by the strength and power of the landscape, the history, and the people.

The Atlas Mountains Trek begins in the walled imperial city of Marrakesh , founded in the eleventh century. The wall surrounding the city spans nearly 12 miles, with 200 watchtowers spread across its length, alternating between red and pink hues. To begin our journey, we travel to the mountain hamlet of Imlil, with its green terraced farms, renowned as the perfect spot to begin any trekking trip through the Atlas Mountains. Next we lead you on a hike to the Adrar Tamalroute , an 8900 ft summit. The following two days are hikes to two rugged mountain huts preparing for the ascent of Toubkal (13,671 ft), the highest mountain in North Africa. Afterwards, we travel to Essaouira for two nights of pure bliss watching the sunset over the Atlantic and the western shores of Africa . Enjoy beach walks, relaxing and shopping in the markets full of local treasures. A morning shuttle to Marrakesh on day 10 wraps up this amazing journey.

Complete Guide For visiting the Atlas Mountains

Atlas mountains

Atlas mountains, Morocco, Africa

Planning a trip to Morocco? Don't miss out on discovering the Atlas Mountains!

Stretching some 2,500km (1,600 miles) across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, the mighty Atlas Mountains are a series of mountain ranges created by the violent collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates roughly 80 million years ago. The massif forms a barrier between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara. Fortunately, the most important part of the Atlas Mountains is located in Morocco as it is enriched by three massifs: the Anti Atlas, the Middle Atlas, and the High Atlas that attracts most of the visitors. Many come to climb Djebel Toubkal , the highest peak of the Atlas Mountains, which rises to 4,167 meters.

Shared between the three Maghreb countries, the Atlas Mountains are among the must-see places in North-Africa. No matter what country you are going to, be sure to visit it. Magnificent landscapes, canyons, oases, and rivers await you.

Suffice to say, the Atlas Mountains are one of the world’s most fascinating regions to travel through . Most people come here to trek, discover Berber villages, take beautiful hike , and walk from one remote village to another. If this is what you intend to do, and you are in process of planning the perfect Morocco trip, then let this complete guide share everything you need to know in preparation for a journey to this stunning region.

This massif takes its name from a deity from Berber and Greek mythology. According to the Greek myth, the giant Atlas is condemned by Zeus to support the celestial vault on his shoulders. Petrified by Perseus thanks to the head of Medusa, the giant is transformed into a mountain range. Herodotus reports in a work on the Berbers that the locals consider the mountain as the column that supports the sky. The word Atlas thus seems to come from the Berber word assalas meaning “beam”.

At the heart of the myths and legends of the Mediterranean, the Atlas Mountains are to be discovered both for the diversity of cultures and landscapes they shelter and for the experiences and sporting activities that can be practiced there. Swarmed with fertile plateaus, old desert and eroded mountains, canyons, and freshwater basins, The Atlas Mountains has everything to amaze visitors. The massif has a number of unique sites to visit . On the Moroccan side, we can thus evoke the Ait Bouguemaz valley, the national parks of Ifrane, Khenifra, and Tazekka, but also the national park of Toubkal in the High Atlas and the Paradise Valley not far from Agadir.

To discover the Atlas Mountains, you can obviously opt for guided day tours. Accompanied by a local guide, you can learn more about the region, its peculiarities, and its history. Usually, a one-day guided tour focuses on a unique and special site in the Atlas. Among the most popular excursions, we can, for example, include the Imlil Valley, the Ouzoud Waterfalls, the Paradise Valley, or the village of Tamatert.

2. 4×4 excursions to the Atlas Mountains

If the Atlas Mountains are best viewed from the ground, admiring them from the skies is sure to be memorable. A hot-air balloon flight, but also by helicopter, offers you a different and spectacular perspective on this natural monument. Fortunately, there are quite a few such tours and the prices aren't as high as you might think at first.

A one-hour hot air balloon flight from Marrakech is appx €200. From the skies, you will observe the Moroccan countryside, as well as the valleys and hills of the desert. Since these flights often take place at dawn, the rising sun will tint the landscapes with beautiful colors of gold, orange, red, and yellow. There is no doubt that this experience will leave you with lasting memories !

4. Mule riding in the Atlas mountains

Mule riding in the Atlas mountains

Mules are a part of Berber life and they are vital for transporting supplies up the mountains and to remote communities, and also for carrying the occasional tourist as not all Atlas visitors are accomplished hikers!

Fortunately, it is possible to discover the Atlas Mountains in many different ways and one of the best is obviously an excursion or ride on the back of a mule. These adventures are excellent for gently discovering the landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. Accompanied by a guide, rides start in Imlil village and may head in any direction towards Azzaden, Imnane valleys, peaceful rivers, waterfalls and ponds.

5. Mountain biking and cycling in the High Atlas Mountains

biking in the High Atlas Mountains

cycling in the High Atlas Mountains

Same as walking tours, biking is a great way to explore the Atlas Mountains. Many mountain bike trails cross the entire Moroccan Atlas. In winter, we will favor the south of Morocco. This region will delight you with its arid mountains, oasis valleys and desert. In summer, the Berber High Atlas is open to cycle hikers. You can then cross high passes, follow the bed of the wadis, travel through hidden green valleys. In short, regardless of the time of year, you will find what you are looking for in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains!

6. Quad or buggy Atlas Mountain expeditions

Quad Atlas Mountain expeditions

Quad Atlas Mountain expeditions

Do you want to combine thrills and discover fantastic landscapes? Then quad or buggy excursions are made for you! As with the 4×4 outings, many quad or buggy excursions are organized to easily discover the Atlas Mountains. Most of the outings starts from Marrakech and follow the same route. You will then discover the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, with part of the excursion in Agafay desert.

You will travel through the Berber countryside, passing by orchards, meadows, eucalyptus forests and the desert. As a backdrop, the Atlas Mountains will catch your eye. You will be able to admire them at each of your stops. Some guided quad expeditions even offer to drink tea in a typical house, obviously with the snow-capped mountains as companions. In addition to the Berber villages, most excursions make a detour to the magnificent Lake of Takerkoust.

The massif is as you know quite vast. Thus, it is home to many villages and towns and therefore many places to stay. Sleeping in the Atlas Mountains will allow you to multiply the visits, on foot, by bike, or by other means in the mountains. But above all, you will be able to enjoy its unique atmosphere, its landscapes, and its serenity. Far from big cities, closer to the heavens, you can take the time to discover, contemplate, and let yourself go.

In Morocco, there are several places that we can recommend to you. From these accommodations, you can easily explore several exceptional sites in the Atlas Mountains. Here is our selection:

1. The Kasbah Bab Ourika

Nestled in the Ourika Valley, the Kasbah Bab Ourika is an ecological and authentic hotel. Open year-round, it offers all the services and facilities for exploring the surrounding Atlas Mountains. This establishment is ideal for an adventurous stay in style.

2. L'Amandier

Located in the Ouirgane Valley, Amandier is a luxurious hotel just 45 minutes from Marrakech. As for the Kasbah Bab Ourika, exceptional views of the mountains await you. The uniqueness of this place lies in its exceptional facilities: an infinity pool, comfortable rooms with beautiful views of the peaks, spa, and restaurant.

What is the best time to travel to the Atlas Mountains?

Although the area is vast, covering some 2,500km (1,600 miles), the best times to visit the Atlas Mountain is Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) especially if your primary purpose is hiking. Summer is sizzling hot at most of the sights we covered above, while winter can be rainy, or snowy, depending on where you go, however, this can be a great opportunity to skiing in Toubkal National Park and Oukaïmeden from January to March. Note that during peak periods, prices tend to be higher and tourist sites are likely to be crowded.

Ramadan is the month of fasting, it is a very important period in Morocco, where you will experience distinctive aspects of the culture that are only apparent once a year. Muslims fast from all food and water from dawn until sunset. When it is time to break the fast you will hear the evening call to prayer, which is announced through a loudspeaker, however visitors during that time should at least be aware of it and are likely to experience some effect from it such as monuments and shop opening time changes...

The Atlas Mountains, located south of Marrakech, are the highest mountain range in North Africa.  Separating the Sahara desert from the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlas Mountains offer breathtaking views and a chance to experience traditional Berber culture.

During my first trip to Morocco, I spent several days driving through the mountain range exploring the small Berber villages, staying in traditional kasbahs and soaking in the stunning landscapes. The Atlas Mountains are a truly unique travel destination and I knew that I wanted to return.

But during my most recent trip to Morocco, I didn’t have as much time, so my friends and I chose to take a day trip to the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech instead.

At first, I was hesitant about cramming such an epic experience into just one day, but I’m glad I did because it was absolutely worth it!

If you’re short on time or looking for a convenient day trip from Marrakech, I highly recommend taking a guided tour to the Atlas Mountains.

Not only will you get to see some of the most beautiful views in Morocco, but you’ll also have the opportunity to learn about Berber culture, sample traditional cuisine, and even hike to a stunning waterfall if you’re feeling adventurous!

In this post, I’m gonna talk about my awesome experience on this one-day tour and why it became my favourite day during my recent trip to Marrakech.

My Atlas Mountains Day Trip From Marrakech

Day trips from Marrakech

My friends and I booked this guided day trip to the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech.

The tour lasted half the day and we were back in Marrakech late afternoon with time to shop in the souks and relax in our riad before our dinner plans that evening.

Our tour started bright and early, with a comfortable minivan picking us up from  Jemaa el-Fna Square in Marrakech. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, giving us interesting facts about the landscape and history of the Atlas Mountains throughout the drive.

The Drive Through The Atlas Mountains To Imlil Village

Day trip to atlas mountains marrakech

The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads and stunning views of the countryside.

I love these roads through the mountains as the views are unreal, with awe-inspiring natural scenery and charming local villages dotting the landscape.

Along the way, our guide made sure to stop at some of the best viewpoints for photos and to stretch our legs.

Visiting A Women’s Co-operative In The Atlas Mountains

Moroccan women making argan oil

Our first stop of the day was at a women’s co-operative in the Atlas Mountains.

Here, we learned about traditional Berber techniques for making argan oil and other products such as soaps, creams, and shampoos.

The women were very welcoming and showed us how they extract the oil from the nuts of the argan trees that grow abundantly in this region. They also showed us how to tell the difference between real argan oil and cheap alternatives.

Fake argan oil is one of the biggest tourist scams in Morocco , so it was great to learn from the experts themselves.

We then had a small breakfast consisting of mint tea, argan oil, olive oil, honey, almonds, and freshly baked bread thoughtfully prepared by these skilled women.

After purchasing some souvenirs and supporting the local women, we continued our journey towards Imlil village.

Atlas Mountains Trekking To The Imlil Waterfalls

Atlas mountains waterfall

We stopped for a while in Imlil village and spent some time preparing for the hike. There was a small shop where I bought some water and had an espresso before heading off.

The trek wasn’t long or too strenuous, it took around an hour. However, it was really hot so I was glad  I had bought that extra bottle of water.

The hike was super enjoyable. It took us past local houses and farms, through lush green vegetation and crystal clear streams. We even saw some goats climbing up steep rocks and a friendly cow!

Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area, pointing out different plants and wildlife along the way. He also told us about the history of Imlil village and how it has changed over time.

At one point we had to cross the stream on a sketchy-looking wooden bridge, our guide assured us that it was safe and we all made it across without any problems but it did provide some entertainment as we all hopped over.

Hiking in Atlas mountains Marrakech

Finally, we reached the beautiful Imlil waterfalls. The view was absolutely breathtaking with the cascading water falling into a natural pool below.

We took some time to relax, take some awesome Instagram pics and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The waterfalls aren’t huge and definitely not as impressive as the nearby Ouzoud Falls , but they are much more secluded and the energy here is so much more peaceful.

Imlil Waterfalls. These small falls can easily be visited during a day trip to Atlas Mountains from Marrakech

Some locals had a little stall selling freshly squeezed orange juice next to the waterfall, so we treated ourselves to a refreshing drink before starting our journey back.

I also filled my empty water bottle with fresh water from the falls. The water comes straight from the melting snow on the mountains so it is crystal clear and freezing cold!

Lunch In Imlil Village

After leaving the falls we continued to hike for around another 40 minutes. We hiked through some gorgeous meadows filled with wildflowers, they looked like something from a fairytale! We also had some epic views of Mt. Toubkal , the highest peak in North Africa.

Atlas mountains Morocco

Once we arrived back in Imlil village, our guide took us to a local restaurant for lunch. We enjoyed a delicious traditional Berber meal while chatting with our guide and learning more about the local culture. I had a delicious vegetable tagine and some freshly baked bread.

The restaurant had a lovely terrace with views over the village and the mountains. We spent some time on the terrace but my friends and I decided to eat our meal inside the restaurant as the heat of the afternoon sun was overbearing.

After lunch, we headed back to Marrakech. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I highly recommend adding this day trip to your itinerary when visiting Morocco.

The beautiful scenery, the friendly locals, and the delicious food make for an unforgettable experience. It was definitely my favourite day trip during my stay in Marrakech.

The Best Day Trips From Marrakech To Atlas Mountains

Waterfall atlas mountains

Here are some of the best tours to the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech that I recommend.

Many tours are available that also include camel rides. However, please don’t be tempted to partake in these activities. Camel riding can be unethical as the camels are not always treated well.

We told our guide ahead of time that we didn’t want to do a camel ride and they were happy to remove this activity from the tour itinerary.

Where To Stay In Marrakech

Relax at riad Marrakech

When choosing where to stay in Marrakech, there are two areas to choose from: the medina and the new town.

The medina is the historic heart of Marrakech, where you can find traditional riads and bustling markets. It’s perfect for those looking for an authentic Moroccan experience.

On the other hand, the new town offers a more modern atmosphere with luxurious hotels, restaurants and shopping centres. This area is great for those seeking a bit more comfort and convenience during their stay.

I have always stayed in the Medina but I’ve visited the new town and it definitely has its own charm.
