National Zoo in DC: 6 tips for your visit

These are six of our top tips for visiting the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC. One of the best things about visiting the National Zoo is that unlike other zoos in the United States this one is completely free . It might not be the biggest or grandest zoo in America, but this zoo definitely packs a punch!

Top Tips for Visiting the National Zoo in DC

1. Don’t drive or park at the National Zoo

Regular parking right now costs over $20 per visit. Not only is it expensive but spaces are extremely limited. Even if you are willing to pay, if you show up on a really busy day there might not be anywhere for you to go!

A much better option for getting to the National Zoo is to take the Metro ‘s red line. A bonus hack for this is to always walk downhill. When traveling to the National Zoo, use the Cleveland Park station, you’ll walk downhill to get to the zoo entrance. When you leave the zoo, walk downhill to get to the Woodley Park station. This is especially handy if you are traveling with strollers. Nobody wants to push those up a big hill!

2. Use free shuttles to get around the National Zoo

Most visitors don’t realize until they arrive, but the National Zoo is actually built on a huge hill. So, when you are walking around in the zoo to get from exhibit to exhibit you’re actually walking up and down hill the entire time. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes!

The National Zoo runs a shuttle throughout the day. So if you’re at the bottom of the hill, and you’re tired, just wait at one of the shuttle bus stops and let a bus drive you back to the top of the hill. The zoo shuttle is completely free.

3. Know where to park your stroller

If you are visiting the National Zoo with kids you will probably have at least one stroller. A stroller makes things super easy because you can pack everything you need in it. There are exhibits that encourage you to leave your stroller outside. We recommend you have another small bag with all of your valuable items so, you just take with you as you leave your stroller at the designated stroller parking.

4. Skip the zoo food

Food at the National Zoo has improved tremendously over the past few years, but the best places to eat are outside the zoo. If you’re organized you can bring your own lunch and or eat at restaurants nearby like Nando’s or Duke’s Counter . Duke’s located right across the street on Connecticut Avenue from the front gate of the National Zoo and is a great place for lunch. There are about ten restaurants located on Connecticut Avenue near the zoo so there are plenty of options.

5. Visit the National Zoo early in the morning

Unlike Smithsonian museums that are located on the National Mall which open at 10:00 a.m., the National Zoo is actually opens early. The grounds open at 8 a.m. and the exhibits open at 9 a.m. One of the great things about getting there early is that it’s usually cooler in the morning and the animals are more active in the morning hours than they are in the afternoon.

If you want to see animals, we definitely recommend going at dawn or at dusk. Midday is hot and its when the animals take their naps. One good thing about visiting the National Zoo during the summer though is there are misters throughout the zoo that are super fun for kids. There is also a splash pad that’s easy to miss. Check it out near the sea lion exhibit.

6. Check out the special events

The National Zoo hosts special events throughout the year. The best known is ZooLights which takes place every year between about Thanksgiving and January 1st. ZooLights is great because it gives you a chance to see the zoo at night. It is all lit up, it’s beautiful, it’s also cold. So, bring hand warmers, and maybe a thermos of cocoa.

The Zoo also has events like Breakfast at the Zoo in September and have Boo at the Zoo in October. You can trick or treat at the National Zoo. This is definitely an experience you’re not going to want to miss if you’re around for it.

National Zoo wild night zoo venture tour

Did the 3 hour evening tour + dinner. We were on an electric vehicle with 4 other people, which was a good sized group. There were about 15-20 other people all up in different vehicles so it was great being in the zoo without crowds. Our guide was interesting and knowledgeable, gave us snacks for the animals in the walk through enclosures. We just saw the animals that were on the tour track, which is only part of the zoo. But it was evening, when a lot of the animals go to bed. The snacks and dinner served were really nice. Would recommend.

Hi Allison, Thank you for your feedback. As the WILD Night ZooVenture Tours are fairly new it is great to hear that you enjoyed the experience. We look forward to seeing you again in the zoo.

Where do I begin... From start to finish the Canberra National Zoo and Aquarium was absolutely amazing. It was the first time for us at this zoo and it's just set out so nicely compared to our zoo in our state. Everything is just easy to find, even the animals. We did a Wonders of Wildlife Experience on our last day and could not highly recommend this enough. It was worth every cent! We literally got to feed Lions, Tigers, Bears, Lemurs, Meerkats, Giraffes and even pat a Cheetah! Just to name a few things. The staff were so nice, friendly and knowledgeable, but a big shout out has to go to our tour guide for the day Will, who was absolutely amazing, accommodating, entertaining, knowledegable and helpful! If you do this experience, do yourself a favour and request Will to be your guide, as you will not be disappointed. The Canberra Zoo and Aquarium should pay him whatever he asks for, because he is an absolute asset and star! :) We love our animals and this was hands down one of the best experiences we have done and I recommend this to anyone that loves animals and experiences just as much. It will not disappoint! Visit the Zoo and Aquarium if you are in Canberra.. you won't regret it! Thank you again Canberra National Zoo and Aquarium. We will be back again! :)

Hi, We appreciate your wonderful feedback. I will be sure to pass on your kind words to Will. We are so glad you had such an incredible time here and look forward to seeing you in the future.

We bought the WOW package and WOW it was. Such a bucket list experience being up close to the animals and seeing what the keepers do each day. Will definately do it again.

We had the most amazing experience at the National Zoo & Aquarium in Canberra. Going behind the scenes and getting up close with such beautiful animals was an absolute dream. Our guide Jake made the experience beyond anything we could have ever asked for, we adored him! The genuine love and care the keepers have for the animals was beyond evident. This zoo heavily contributes to conservation efforts and actively works to raise awareness of prevalent issues affecting these animals. Overall, the zoo itself is so beautiful and considerate of the animals. We could see this in the well thought out and large enclosures, as well as how passionately the keepers spoke about the zoo, the animals, and conservation. Not to mention, all the incredible encounters and experiences they offer. The WOW tour exceeded expectations and was a phenomenal day. I can’t recommend this zoo enough, just going there without booking an encounter or tour is such a great experience!

Hi Abby, Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We are so glad you enjoyed your WOW tour and that the day was such a good experience. I will be sure to pass your kind words onto Jake. We look forward to seeing you here in the future.

The National Zoo and Aquarium is the best zoo in Australia! It’s the highlight of Canberra. It has plenty of parking out the front and an overflow car park for busy days. The zoo itself is huge and has many different species. The enclosures are FANTASTIC! I found myself remarking to my dad many times throughout the day just how good the enclosures are set up, with lots of space and things to encourage the animals to engage in natural behaviours. Watching the rhino play in the mud was very cool! The Sri Lankan leopards we’re definitely a favourite for me. Sometimes they were hard to see but it was great fun to look through the foliage and try and find them, or come back later in the day and try again. The glass/Perspex areas in the enclosures were great to feel like you are close to the animals, and get some pictures through, too. The white lions are a highlight, and we did the feeding encounter. This was a great way to get up close. I also did the sun bear encounter, which was brilliant! I also did the Meet the Cheetah Cubs encounter and this was amazing!! Being in the enclosure with three cheetah, and being able to pat them and hear them purring was very special. I like the decor of the Rhino Bistro and the playground was good. My dad and I are both very much adults and we thought it was cool! There was lots of shade from the heat and shelter from the rain - we experienced both in the one day! All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. They were all more than happy to stop for a minute or two and speak to us, or just a friendly hello. This was very much appreciated and made us feel very welcome and at home. As a zoo which promotes kindness to animals, vegan options (more than just chips!) in both cafes would be great! More places to fill water bottles would’ve been good too. The gift shop could’ve sold more named items, like mugs, T-shirts, hoodies, beanies etc. with the zoo name/logo on it. Then when I use or wear them I could promote the zoo again! :) All in all, the zoo is an amazing place and I always recommend it to people. Being so big it can take a while to get around and a lot of energy, but it’s really worth it.

Hi, Thank you for your kind words. We are so glad you and your Dad enjoyed your Greet-the-Cheetah Cub experience. Additionally, the feedback regarding the Rhino Bistro and Gift Shop is much appreciated. We look forward to seeing you here again sometime.

My husband, parents, & I did the W.O.W tour & thoroughly enjoyed every part of it. Our guide Jess was enthusiastic & very knowledgable, & the provided morning tea/lunch was lovely. We were lucky enough to meet or feed every animal we encountered, & it was all in all an amazing day! I would highly recommend doing a tour or visiting the zoo to anyone that is interested.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate you taking the time to let us know. We are so glad you enjoyed your day with us on the WOW tour and I will be sure to pass on your kind words to Jess. We look forward to seeing you here in the future.

Zoo promises a wild night out with new packaged tours.

The National Zoo and Aquarium is staying open after hours this summer for its first packaged night tours, offering guided drives around the zoo, with gourmet dinners and drinks.

Backed by the ACT Government via the COVID-Safe Tourism Co-Investment Program, the Wild Night Zooventure program is due to begin in early in January and adds another innovative strand to the zoo’s offering which already includes its award-winning Jamala Wildlife Lodge.

Available to about 50 patrons on the night, the Zooventure offers guided tours in specialised electric purpose-bought vehicles, including a 14-seater bus, buggies of varying sizes, a Can Am Maverick rally vehicle, a H1 Hummer and it’s mini look-alike, the six-seater wingman.

Guests can choose their own vehicle when booking.

The zoo is bringing in a chef to prepare gourmet dinners including a children’s menu, and guests will be able to make two African Sundowner stops, with the opportunity to enjoy canapes and a drink in front of the animals.

At the completion of the animal tour, children will be able to undertake a hayride to the zoo’s renowned playground, which features more than 50 activities and in excess of 50 replica animals, most full size and many that children can play on.

The zoo says that with Jamala guests enjoying their dinner at uShaka Lodge at the time, the Wild Night ZooVenture participants will virtually have the zoo to themselves.

Not all animals will be out and about in the evening but the zoo is promising other activities to make the night a real adventure.

Animals that guests can expect to see include some zoo favourites such as the meerkats, giraffe and cheetah, as well as the rhino, dingo, deer and elk, zebra, ostrich, koala, tree kangaroo, Tasmanian devils, kangaroos and wallabies.

The zoo says the Zooventure is one of very few genuine zoo night tours in Australia.

After a disrupted year due to the pandemic, the zoo like other tourism attractions in the ACT, is looking for ways to broaden its appeal and diversify its offering to the public.

Did you know there are exciting opportunities to visit the zoo at night?

Sunset safaris.

national zoo night tour

Experience the zoo while the sun is setting – some animals will be settling down to sleep, while the nocturnal animals will start their nightly activities. Join our guides who will inform you about animals, nature, the environment and ecology: the fantastic hearing abilities of bat-eared foxes, the role jackals play in the ecosystem, the hunting strategy of cheetahs, the intricate social interactions of wild dogs, the conservation crisis that rhinos are currently experiencing and other intriguing facets.

Please meet your guide at the National Zoo’s service entrance in Boom Street, Pretoria, by no later than 18h30. He will accompany you to your venue (see below) and then take you on a one-hour walking safari. On return to your venue, the braai fires will be ready for you to eat and enjoy the rest of the evening. Please vacate the premises by 23h30.

The National Zoo will provide a venue with table-and-bench units (except at the Hippo Lapa), braai stands and charcoal. Please provide your own food, drinks, other refreshments as well as crockery and cutlery.

Sunset Safaris take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 September to 31 March.

national zoo night tour

Zoo Camps are similar to the Sunset Safaris listed above with the important difference that you may camp in the zoo for the night.

Please meet your guide at the National Zoo’s service entrance in Boom Street, Pretoria, by no later than 17h30. He will accompany you to your venue (please see below) and allow you to set up your tents and other camping gear. He will then take you on a one-hour walking safari. On safari, the guide will inform you about animals, nature, the environment and ecology: the fantastic hearing abilities of bat-eared foxes, the role jackals play in the ecosystem, the hunting strategy of cheetahs, the intricate social interactions of wild dogs, the conservation crisis that rhinos are currently experiencing and other intriguing facets.

On return to your venue, the braai fires will be ready for you to eat, enjoy the rest of the evening and settle down for the night. Please vacate the premises by 7h30 the next morning.

The National Zoo will provide a venue with table-and-bench units, braai stands and charcoal. A lawn will be available for your tents. Please provide your own food, drinks, other refreshments, crockery and cutlery as well as all camping equipment, such as tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, etc. Do not forget breakfast the next morning. Electricity is available to boil water – please bring your own kettle or urn.

Zoo Camps take place on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 September to 31 March.

We have the following venues available for your consideration:

Farm Yard Lapa

The Farm Yard Lapa is a large thatched roof facility (8.5 m x 15 m) on the zoo’s farm. It is available for groups between 45 and 90 people. It has 10 table-bench units which are movable, allowing a group to arrange the area to their liking. An adjacent roofed area allows for braaing even in the event of rain. A bonfire stand is available – please bring your own wood. The large lawn on the farm makes this an ideal area for larger groups, especially those who would like to camp for the night. Electric lights and plugs are available.

A block of toilets is situated on the western side of the farm, about 150 m from the Farm Yard Lapa. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Farm Yard Lapa may be booked for both Sunset Safaris and Zoo Camps.

Farm Yard Barn

This barn (8.5 m x 12 m) is also situated on the zoo’s farm and is available for groups between 15 and 30 people. It has 4 table-bench units as well as a bonfire stand – please supply your own wood. The braai stand is outside, but may be moved into the barn in the event of rain. Electric lights and plugs are available. The lawn is ideal for camping.

A block of toilets is situated on the western side of the farm, about 150 m from the Farm Yard Barn. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Farm Yard Barn may be booked for both Sunset Safaris and Zoo Camps.

Anteater Nest

This venue is situated next to the zoo’s giant anteaters from South America. It covers an area of 4.5 m x 11 m, has 3 table-bench units and is available for groups between 15 and 30 people. The braai stand is outside. Electric lights and plugs are available. The lawn is ideal for camping.

A block of toilets is situated close by, about 150 m from the Anteater Nest. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Anteater Nest may be booked for both Sunset Safaris and Zoo Camps.

This thatched roof lapa is situated next to the zoo’s hippo enclosure and has a unique atmosphere. It covers an area of 8 m x 14 m and has a table top as well as a braai stand. Please provide your own camping chairs. Electric lights and plugs are available. It is available for groups between 15 and 30 people.

A block of toilets is situated close by, about 50 m from the Hippo Lapa. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Hippo Lapa may be booked for Sunset Safaris only.

Apies River Arena

This area is next to the famous Apies River. As this open lawn does not have any shelter, the nearby owl house may be used as protection from rain. It has 3 table-bench units as well as a braai stand and is available for groups between 15 and 30 people. Electric lights and plugs are available.

A block of toilets is situated next to the lawn. No showers or other washing facilities are available.

The Apies River Arena may be booked for Sunset Safaris only.

Booking a night visit

Please note that you need to book the number of people, the type of activity and the venue simultaneously, e.g. “12 adults and 6 children for a Sunset Safari, using the Hippo Lapa” or “9 adults and 8 children for Zoo Camp, using the Anteater Nest”.

The National Zoo, part of the Smithsonian institution, boasts a 163-acre zoo, with more than 400 species of animals. The zoo is part of the larger national park, Rock Creek. As with all other Smithsonian institutions, admission to the Zoo is free. The zoo is famous for its panda pair of Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. The zoo is funded mainly by tax dollars and has more than 2 million visitors a year.

The zoo was founded in 1889 by famed American naturalist William T. Hornaday, who was concerned by the disappearance of native species of the United States, mainly bison. His dream was to create a place where breeding of these endangered species could take place so native animal species wouldn’t be lost. The Zoo continues his wishes by having a large animal breeding program.

Interesting Facts

  • The Zoo operates a 3,200 acre conservation facility in Virginia, where between 30 and 40 endangered species are enrolled in breeding programs.
  • The panda Tai Shan, on loan to the Zoo from the Chinese government, is returning to China in early 2010.
  • The zoo’s original collection of animals came from places such as circuses and did not really begin to become large until World War II.
