Napier cruise port

Welcome to the Napier cruise port guide. Napier is the one of the highlights in sunny Hawke’s bay. Check our Napier cruise port guide underneath to see where the ship is going to dock and what the best way is to get around.

Napier cruise port guide: docked

Cruise ships dock in the seaport of Napier. This is large container port Walking in prohibited in port. The only way to get out of the port is by your ship’s shore excursion bus or to take the complimentary shuttle bus from the cruise dock to the city center.

Napier’s cruise port is only about 2 km / 1 mile away from the city center and the shuttle bus service from the cruise port to the city will only take a few minutes.

Welcome to the port of Napier

Shuttle bus

There is no walking allowed in the port area, so there are only two ways to get out of Napier’s port: by one of the ship’s shore excursions busses or the shuttle bus. Most of the times Napier provides a complimentary shuttle bus service from the cruise dock to the city center. There are usually a couple of stops along the way. The main stop is the tourist information center on Marine Parade, which is right in the center of town. This is where you will find the main street, the promenade, local tour operators, tourist information and lots more.

Often the shuttle busses are also able to make a few additional stops. They might be kind enough to make a stop for you at the National Aquarium, the Museum (MTG) and the exit of the port. Check and verify all this information with your cruise line.

Tourist information

Sometimes there might be a representative of the tourist information available at the dock to hand out maps and information, but if there is not you simply hop on the shuttle bus and it will get you straight to their visitors center. This facility offers great information on Napier, but also other ports of call in New Zealand that might be on your itinerary. Alternatively they also have a little shop where you can buy some local products.

Shore excursions

The tourist information, called the Napier i-SITE Visitor Information centre, provides local shore excursions for cruise passengers. If you take the shuttle bus from the cruise dock to the tourist information you can simply walk in, see what they have available for you and book it on the spot. All the cruise tours leave from the tourist information centre. There are also other local tour operators that you will find around the tourist information that are looking for business as well. Spend some time checking out what is available before you make a decision. There is usually a nice variety of tours available.

Bicycle rental

Napier is a perfect place to get active and enjoy a bike ride. There are few places where you can rent a bike. One of the places is right across the street from the tourist information centre where the shuttle bus will drop you off. Ask for a suggested route so you are sure you are going to see the best when you are and about. Please keep in mind New Zealand drives on the left!

Public transportation

The local bus stop is on Dalton Street in the city center. Find out more information about routes and times on http://trackabus.co.nz/napierhastings/m/where/index?id=1_25002001

There are usually no or perhaps just a couple of taxis at Napier’s tourist information centre. Most people don’t utilise the taxis as a way to tour around because they are simply very expensive. If you do need one to take you somewhere, than please know the official taxi stand is on Clive Square which is about 3 blocks from where the shuttle bus (tourist information stop) lets you off. Our advice is to check if there are any taxis waiting for you at the shuttle bus stop, if not, ask the tourist information if they would call you one of to point you into the direction of Clive Square where their official taxi stand is.

Finding a proper WiFi connection in Napier will be no problem. The cruise port doesn’t provide any, but the town centre has plenty of free Wifi spots. One of the most convenient places is right but the shuttle bus drop off location. You will see there is a free hotspot available there. Additionally you will also see plenty of cafe’s and restaurants, like the Starbucks across the street from the shuttle bus drop off location, where you are able to get online.

Napier’s boardwalk

The town of Napier has a beach that stretches all the way from the cruise port to the southern parts of town. Along the waterline you will find a beautiful boardwalk with so many things to see and do. Walking it from beginning to get end will take you to the Ocean Spa, Conference Centre, Floral Clock, Tom Parker fountain, Viewing platform, Sound Shell & Colonnade, Tourist information centre, Mini Golf course, the Sunken Gardens, the Reef Garden, a skate board park, playground, Millennium Sculpture and the National Aquarium and Kiwi House.

The beach stretches all the way along the city center of Napier. It is great to have seat somewhere and go people watching, because there is simply so much activity around here. It is not a beach that is very suitable for swimming or water-sports. Most people who want to go for a swim simply visit one of the salt water pools that you will find on the boardwalk next to the beach.

Marine Parade, Napier

Marine Parade, Napier, Hawke's Bay

By Pacific Coast Online

This historic art deco city is located in the heart of New Zealand's oldest wine-making region, Hawke's Bay.

Hawke’s Bay’s destiny was shaped by a devastating 1931 earthquake and the remarkable result was the birth of the dazzling Art Deco and Spanish Mission architectural styles of Napier and Hastings. The region is renowned for its award-winning red wines, its fresh local produce and artisan food producers. Hawke’s Bay is also home to one of the world’s largest mainland gannet colonies at Cape Kidnappers/Te Kauwae-a-Māui.

The Norwegian Jewel, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, in June 2005.

Norwegian Cruise captain refused to let eight passengers who were late reboard ship

Passengers, who have since rejoined vessel, missed scheduled departure time from São Tomé and scrambled to reunite with ship

Eight cruise passengers had to scramble to reunite with their cruise ship after being left behind in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The passengers, including a pregnant woman and a paraplegic traveller, missed their scheduled departure time from the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea, about 250km off the coast of Gabon, after disembarking the Norwegian Dawn to take a local tour.

Another passenger in her 80s was reportedly late to the ship because she was receiving emergency medical treatment on the island.

The vessel, operated by Norwegian Cruise Lines, arrived in São Tome on Wednesday morning having departed Cape Town for the three-week cruise to Barcelona on 20 March.

The group’s private day excursions on the island ran overtime and, despite the efforts of the local coast guard, which motored the group to the ship before it set sail that afternoon, the captain would not allow the late guests to board.

Jill and Jay Campbell, from Garden City in South Carolina, described attempting to board the vessel after arriving late.

“We have never had an experience like this before,” Jill Campbell told ABC4 News .

“The harbour master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number. They said, ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Jay Campbell added.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way.”

The travellers’ passports were returned to them via port authorities. The group, which reportedly includes two Australians, had to leave their medication, bank cards and other belongings on board. The Campbells said they were the only members of the group with a Visa card and had paid more than $5,000 in their attempts to reach the ship.

They aimed to reboard the Norwegian Dawn in the Gambia the following Sunday but low tides prevented the ship from making the scheduled stop. The group reportedly travelled through six countries and eventually met the ship in Dakar, Senegal, the final west African port call of its journey, according to the cruise line.

“What we looked at was some type of van transportation for eight people, the quadriplegic woman included,” Jay Campbell told ABC15 . He described having to take a ferry to get into Senegal, and then a four-hour drive.

Australians Doug and Violeta Sanders were among the stranded passengers.

“It’s been the worst experience of our lives to be abandoned like that in a strange country, can’t speak the language,” Violeta Sanders told Seven’s Sunrise program.

“We have no money, our credit cards aren’t accepted.”

The 21-day cruise is due to end in Barcelona on 10 April.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said it was a “very unfortunate situation” and that it was the passenger’s responsibility to be back on board the ship no later than one hour before the ship’s scheduled departure time.

A Sydney travel lawyer, Anthony Cordato, said passengers needed to heed ships’ tight schedules.

“Terms and conditions would make returning to the ship on time essential,” he said.

“From a consumer’s perspective, it’s harsh but from a ship’s perspective, are you going to hold up the cruise for an hour or two because they were slow to get on board? Are you going to inconvenience 1,000 passengers for the sake of four?”

The cruise company said all eight guests had rejoined the ship.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3pm local time. While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.

“When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol. Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. Given that these guests were on a private tour and did not return to the ship at the communicated all aboard time, they are responsible for any necessary travel arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call, per our protocol.

“While the eight guests made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia on April 1, 2024, unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests’ disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority. We contacted these eight guests regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. As of this morning, all eight guests have rejoined the ship.”

The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Narvik, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Narvik is a port town in Nordland (northeastern Norway) with population around 19,000. The town is located on Ofotfjorden, and close to the Norway-Sweden border.

Narvik is best-known for alpine skiing, having passenger lifts, cable car (to Fagernesfjellet), signed mountain bike route. Vinterfestuka is an annual festival held in early-March. Scuba diving attracts international tourists with many shipwrecks located close to the harbour and more in the fjord. Mountain hiking-biking and fishing (in the lakes or the fjord) are other popular outdoor leisure activities. Occupation Museum has a rare Enigma coding machine (from Germany) captured during WW2 (1939-1945).

Port Narvik is well protected deep-water and ice-free seaport. It consists of 3 waterfront sections - central (with docking piers), deep-water harbor (Fagernes) and LKAB (bulk cargo port). The port handles around 16 million tons of cargo per year.

A port expansion project enlarged the containership terminal area to approx 45,000 m2 (11 acres), which is over twice the size of Norway's biggest terminal in Oslo .

In 2018, the port handled 10 cruise ship calls. For 2019, the cruise port had scheduled 22 ship calls. Land tours from Narvik can be combined with tours to other Norwegian destinations, including the archipelagos Lofoten and Vesteraalen. Among the most popular annual tourist events are "Northern Lights" (during winter) and "Midnight Sun" (during summer).

Narvik cruise terminal

For 2019 were planned the cruise terminal to be moved to downtown and the port to build LNG bunkering facility to serve LNG-powered vessels. Prior to 2019, cruise ships in Port Narvik berthed at a dedicated dock (located approx 1 mi /1,5 km from downtown) and to their passengers was offered bus shuttle service.

port of napier cruise schedule

Royal Caribbean is the latest cruise line to change course due to the closure of the Port of Baltimore.

The port’s Cruise Maryland Terminal is inaccessible because it’s blocked by the remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed into the Patapsco River after being rammed into by a massive container ship early Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson Royal Caribbean said Thursday that a ship that departed from Baltimore on March 23 and was scheduled to return April 4 will now conclude its journey in Norfolk, Virginia, instead.

Carnival Cruise announced a similar reroute Tuesday. In both cases, the companies have offered passengers free buses back to Baltimore.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, Baltimore is the nation’s 29th busiest port for cruise ships, moving about 378,000 passengers annually. Twelve ships were scheduled to dock at the port 115 times during 2024, the association said.

Baltimore’s cruise terminal is home to four cruise lines: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and American Cruises.

Port of Seattle expects record outcomes for local economy as cruise season begins

SEATTLE — The 2024 cruise season has kicked off Saturday with the first cruise ship, the Norwegian Bliss, arriving on Pier 66. The Port of Seattle said they are hopeful this will bring a boost to the economy and tourism to Seattle.

Not only are people excited for the start of the cruise season, but some business managers along the waterfront said this is crucial for their business to strive.

The Port of Seattle expects this season to bring record-breaking numbers with a nearly $900 million dollar boost to the economy and provide more than 5,500 hundred jobs.

"The jobs, people that will be put back to work. people coming to our downtown, that is the heart of why we invest in the cruise season," said Stephanie Jones Tebbins with the Port of Seattle.

The Port of Seattle is also working to become the greenest port in North America and to phase out seaport-related emissions by 2050.

Restaurants along the waterfront like ''Anthony’s Pier 66" are getting ready to welcome more customers through their doors thanks to cruises that stop here.

“It increases our sales by twofold we’re allowed to open all of our restaurants this time of year because of the cruise ships so we definitely look forward to it," said Willie Mitchell, who manages the restaurant.

The Port of Seattle said they expect more than 800,000 passengers and 275 ship calls this cruise season. Some of those passengers tell KOMO News they came early to explore what Seattle has to offer.

RELATED | Will Seattle see more cruise ships 'plugged in' for the 2024 season?

“I imagine people coming here will boost the economy because we came in a day early just to see Seattle before we boarded the ship," said Sharon Black, who was getting ready for the cruise.

The Port of Seattle also hopes to bring more passengers this year. Last year, the Port of Seattle reported they saw 1.7 million passengers, about 400,000 more than in 2022.

Industry leaders said cruise season is the driving force behind Seattle’s economic recovery at $4 million per sailing and $920 million per season.

Timeline to reopen Port of Baltimore unclear as collapsed Key Bridge cleanup begins

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 31, 2024 / 8:13 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE — A massive salvaging effort is underway to reopen the Port of Baltimore after the deadly collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The Navy has mobilized a 1,000-ton lift capacity derrick barge, a 400-ton lift-capacity revolving crane barge and a 160-ton revolving crane to help lift debris from the water, a huge undertaking in the works.

Officials say the section of the bridge trapping the cargo ship dolly weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 tons, so before the Army Corps of Engineers can start moving anything off the water, they're going to have to cut the debris into smaller pieces.

On Saturday evening, officials said demolition crews began cutting portions the collapsed bridge.

"Highly trained demolition crews are cutting the top portion of the north side of the collapsed bridge truss," officials said in an update. "Two crane barges, a 650-ton crane and a 330-ton crane are actively working on scene. The removed wreckage is scheduled to be lifted and transferred to a barge this evening as daylight allows. A 230-ton land-based crane will offload and process the wreckage at Tradepoint Atlantic and will then be taken to a disposal site."

Photos released by officials showed teams in protective gear using an "exothermic cutting torch" on sections of the steel bridge.

When will the Port of Baltimore reopen?

All vessel traffic in and out of the port was suspended in the wake of the collapse, but it has remained open for trucks. It isn't clear yet how long it will take to clear the 700-foot span of the channel of thousands of tons of debris.

The Baltimore district of the corps activated its Emergency Operations Center, which clears the way for more than 1,100 engineering, construction, contracting and operations specialists to provide support to local, state and federal agencies.

unnamed.jpg

CBS News correspondent Kris Van Cleave reports everything needs to be cleared from the bottom of the channel — 50 feet below the surface — because there is only 12 to 18 inches of clearance between the bottom of the channel and the hull of a cargo ship loaded down with containers.

"There is a lot of speculation as to when the channel will be reopened," the Port said in a statement Friday. "The fact of the matter is we do not know. Please understand that we are working minute-by-minute with our federal, state and local partners to make that happen as quickly as possible."

The port is the  ninth-busiest  in the United States, according to Census data, and handled more than $80 billion in import and exports last year, the most in 20 years. It is also home to Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian  cruise lines .

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News  report .

"The most urgent priority is to open the Port of Baltimore because it is essential to the livelihood of people here in Baltimore, in Maryland, and the economies across our country and around the world," U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen said in a news conference Wednesday.

Maryland lawmakers are drafting emergency legislation for  income replacement  to assist thousands of Port of Baltimore workers impacted by the disruption.

Four remain missing, presumed dead

Eight people , part of a construction crew filling potholes, were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Two were rescued, two bodies have been recovered, and four remain missing.

So far, four of the victims  have been identified :

  • Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 35, originally from Honduras
  • Miguel Luna, originally from El Salvador
  • Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, originally from Guatemala
  • Jose Mynor Lopez ,  35, originally from Guatemala

The bodies of Cabrera and Fuente were recovered from a submerged pickup truck. The search for bodies was paused Wednesday because divers can no longer operate around the mangled bridge debris that has encased submerged vehicles, officials said.

Federal support incoming

Maryland is receiving an initial $60 million in emergency funding from the federal government as the state works to clear the debris. The state sent  a letter of request  for relief to pay for mobilization, operations and debris recovery.

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he intends to push the  federal government to pay  for the entire reconstruction of the bridge, and pledged to work with Maryland leaders to provide as much support as possible.

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said earlier, adding that he plans to visit Baltimore as soon as he can.

The $60 million estimate made by the state of Maryland for initial expenses is, at most, just 10% of the estimated cost for response to the disaster, CBS News learned following a Maryland Congressional delegation meeting.

The Maryland delegation talked about likely costs exceeding $1 billion and a "need for an emergency supplemental" aid package from Congress.
