Flights to Miami for less than $100? Cheap airline tickets to nab this Spring and Summer

24 hour round trip flights

Sometimes you just need to get away.

This spring and summer, there are a plethora of destinations with affordable roundtrip airfare, from bustling cities to sun-soaked beach paradises – both domestic and abroad. Think Puerto Rico, Ireland or Las Vegas.

Travelers should start looking at prices at least three to four months in advance for domestic trips, and the best prices generally will be one to two months before the departure date, according to travel app Hopper.

International trips require more planning, with flights to Asia and Oceania booked between five and seven months in advance. However, people going to Europe or elsewhere can wait until three and six months for the lowest rates.

As always, flexibility allows for better deals. Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday could save travelers up to 30% compared to a weekend trip, Hopper said.

How to Book a Long Layover and Get More Travel in One Trip

Scott Keyes

Scott Keyes

August 6, 2023

Layovers are a nearly inevitable part of traveling internationally, which means many travelers often find themselves with a few hours to spend in an airport in between flights. While these short layovers might be a small inconvenience, longer layovers (9+ hours) can actually be an opportunity.

Adding a long layover, also called a stopover, in between flights is one of the easiest ways to see more of the world in one trip, and you don’t have to be a super savvy traveler to do it.

Why should I add a long layover?

Few things are worse for travel lovers than having to pass quickly through a destination you’d otherwise like to visit. With a little time and flexibility, adding a long layover into your journey is easy. Rather than being stuck at an airport for 8+ hours, you get to explore a new destination. Plus, there are other benefits.

A long layover breaks up an otherwise long flight, even helping to cut down on jet lag. In many cases, a stopover flight is also cheaper than a direct flight. And, it might be cheaper still if you create your own itinerary rather than booking it all one one ticket (we call that the Greek islands trick .)

Here's an example: if you’re flying from Boston to Sydney, Australia, you might see round-trip prices around $1,267.

flight search from boston to sydney.

But if you want to hang out in Los Angeles for a bit, you can book roundtrip Boston to Los Angeles for $197, and then Los Angeles to Sydney roundtrip for $710—unless, of course, you snagged a Going deal from LAX direct to Sydney for $477.

flight search from boston to LAX.

The difference is $360, which is a significant amount and allows you to break up the long flights and see a new city.

flight search from LAX to Sydney.

‍ Some other routes where it might make sense to add a long layover:

  • Between North America and Africa, layover in a European hub like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or London
  • Between Australia and the East Coast of the US, layover in San Francisco or Los Angeles
  • Between North America and Europe or the UK, layover in Iceland or another large European hub like Zurich, Barcelona, or Amsterdam
  • Enroute to a smaller destination in Southeast Asia, layover in a larger hub like Hong Kong or Bangkok

What are the different types of long layovers?

Layovers come in all shapes and sizes (and lengths!). One type of long layover is a layover imposed by the airline, meaning you’ve bought one ticket and a layover is part of the itinerary. In these cases, the layover might only be a few hours or it could be a full day or more.

To take advantage of this kind of layover, simply choose an itinerary with a long stopover on the same ticket. Take that Boston to Sydney flight, for example—if you did want to book it all on one ticket, you could choose a flight with a 19-hour stopover in Hawaii even if shorter flights are available.

The other main type of layover is one you choose to create by booking two separate tickets.

Airlines that offer free stopovers

Some airlines offer free long layovers as part of an incentive program to bring new travelers onboard while increasing tourism traffic to a destination. Everyone wins!

  • The Icelandair layover program is an excellent option; they’ve built a whole campaign around it. If you’re flying between North America and Europe or the UK, you can layover in Iceland for up to seven days—at no extra cost for the flight. (Read our guide to Icelandair's business class. )
  • Qatar Airways will allow a Doha stopover for up to two days, and they’ll even give you a hotel for one or two nights. Just check their website ahead of time to see if you qualify for visa-free entry into Qatar.
  • You can also get a free Portugal stopover with TAP Portugal for up to five nights in Lisbon or Porto, or stay in Helsinki for up to five days when you fly round-trip with Finnair between Europe and Asia.

>> Read more about these stopovers paid by carrier.

Airlines that offer free layover hotels and tours.

Some airlines will offer free hotels if the layover is forced by their schedule. It’s called STPC—Stopover Paid by Carrier—and it’s offered by airlines such as Turkish, Royal Jordanian, and China Southern, among others.

  • For  Turkish Airlines , if you’re flying economy through Istanbul and you have a layover over 10 hours (or 7 hours for business class), you can take advantage of the STPC—but only if there is no available earlier flight to the same destination.
  • On  China Southern , if you have an 8- to 48-hour stopover in Guangzhou, you’re entitled to a transit hotel. This allows you up to 72 hours of visa-free transit, but there are a series of conditions involved (for example, you have to be from one of 53 nations outlined on the  China Southern website ).
  • Royal Jordanian  offers free hotel, transit, and meals for layovers of 8-24 hours if no same-day connection is available.

If you’re searching flights and you find a great deal with a really long stopover, do some digging to see if the airline offers a STPC. Sometimes the info is buried on their website.

If you’re a bit shorter on time, some airlines and airports offer free or cheap transit tours from the airport. You can do this at Singapore Changi, Seoul Incheon, Doha International, Tokyo Narita, Taiwan Taoyuan, and Istanbul Atatürk (to name a few).

  • At Seoul Incheon you can hop on a guided tour around Songdo Hanok Village in Incheon, or visit Jeondeungsa Temple (the oldest temple in Korea). The airport website has a  long list of transit tours —all you have to do is pay the attraction entrance fees (or any extras, like meals).
  • Singapore Changi offers a  free heritage tour  through Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam, or you can join a city sights tour with stops in Merlion Park, Marina Bay Sands, and the Esplanade.

Make sure you read the full tour details. Registration for tours tends to be restricted to certain hours throughout the day, and in the case of longer tours like the ones from Singapore Changi, you’ll need at least 5.5 hours to spare.

How to create and book a long layover in between flights:.

Start with Google Flights , and make a general search for your final destination. Let’s say you’re headed to London from New York City. You know you might be able to stop over in Iceland on the way there or back. If you’re flexible on dates but know you want to go sometime in May, first search for flights to and from London to find the best dates. Then search for flights to and from Iceland to get an idea of when those flights are the cheapest.

low price calendar on google flights.

Once you have found the dates that offer the lowest prices across the Atlantic, move to a multi-city search. You’ll need to create three searches:

  • You could do NYC to Iceland, Iceland to London, London back to NYC
  • Or you could do NYC to London, London to Iceland, Iceland back to NYC

Play around with the order and dates to find the best possible combination.

multi-city search on google flights.

Google Flights packages this up nicely so that you can easily see the price for two or more separate tickets, but you may need to go to multiple websites to book.

booking multiple flights on google flights.

You could also book a cheap open jaw flight (for example, NYC to London and then Paris back to NYC) and then book a separate flight (or train) ticket that gets you from London to Paris.

Things to consider when choosing a layover city

Before you rush off to purchase that stellar deal, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Make sure the city is easy to reach from the airport . You’ll want to ensure you can get into town easily via public transit, like in London or Amsterdam. If it’s an obscure airport on the outskirts of town, chances are this could be difficult and you’ll lose a lot of time (or money) to transiting between the city and the airport.
  • Consider hubs/cities that encourage long layovers . E.g. the ones listed above with free tours or hotels that help you save money on your long layover.
  • Choose cities/countries that do not require a visa . Check to see if a visa is required. In some cases, like Doha, you can easily get a transit visa specifically for the stopover, but you’ll want to avoid places like Russia that require an expensive visa.
  • Consider how the stopover jives with the rest of your trip . If you’re planning a winter trip to the beaches of Thailand, do you really want to stopover in chilly Frankfurt and have to lug a bunch of extra cold-weather gear?
  • Know what to do with your luggage . If your stopover is an overnight one, you’ll have the option to check the bag all the way through or pick it up during your stopover. If the stopover isn’t a full day and you’ve booked on one ticket, you may have to collect your bags after the first flight or leave them checked through, unless you’ve made separate bookings. If you’ll have your bags with you on a shorter connection, make sure the airport has storage facilities for your baggage. You don’t want to be pulling a heavy suitcase around cobblestone streets as you’re sightseeing. If the airport doesn’t offer storage, see if there’s a hotel or hostel in the area that will hold your luggage for a small fee.
  • Check customs regulations ahead of time . If your baggage isn’t checked all the way through, keep in mind that customs regulations vary per country. Here’s a hypothetical situation: if you’re bringing dairy gifts from Europe to friends in Australia but you have a layover in Guangzhou, make sure your bag is checked the whole way through. Dairy isn’t allowed through customs in China, so you’ll have to surrender all that delicious cheese if you’re rechecking your luggage.

Read some of our layover guides:

  • The Layover Guide to Seoul
  • The Layover Guide to Istanbul
  • The Layover Guide to Frankfurt
  • The Layover Guide to Amsterdam
  • The Layover Guide to Doha
  • The Layover Guide to Panama City

How much time to allow for a layover

If you’ve got a shorter layover, you need to decide if journeying beyond the airport is really worth your time. In general, leaving the airport requires a layover of at least 9 hours, but the minimum time varies by airport. Here are some things to think about when deciding the minimum time you need for a layover.

  • Will you need to go through immigration? Deplaning and going through immigration could take up to two hours, especially in the busiest hubs. In general, you'll need to go through immigration any time you land in a new country, though there are some exceptions, such as when you're traveling within the  Schengen Area . For example, if you're traveling from Paris to NYC with a layover in Zurich, you will not have to go through immigration on your layover in Zurich because you are traveling from a country in the Schengen Area (France) to another country in the Schengen Area (Switzerland). However, if you were starting in Dubrovnik you would have to go through immigration on your layover in Zurich because you'd be traveling from a non-Schengen country (Croatia) to a Schengen country (Switzerland). Here's a handy list of which countries are within the Schengen Area.
  • How long will it take you to get to and from the airport? You’ll need to figure out ahead of time how easy it is to get from the airport into the city. Cities with excellent transit systems (like Amsterdam and London) make it easy to get back and forth, but if there’s no rail system available, you’ll need to check for traffic delays. Trying to get back to the airport via bus during rush hour is not the best idea.
  • How long will it take to get through airport security? Allow yourself at least 2-3 hours before departure back at the airport to recheck your luggage (if necessary), get through security, and find your gate.

Here’s how that looks in practice, if you’re flying from New York to Istanbul with an 8-hour stopover at London Heathrow.

Immigration is usually pretty efficient, but this airport is one of the largest in the world, so there very well could be long line-ups. Heathrow also has baggage storage facilities, but you’ve checking luggage all the way through, so you don’t need to allot for time to store and retrieve your luggage. Budget 2 hours.

Fortunately, the Heathrow Express runs non-stop to Central London (Paddington) every 15 minutes, and the journey itself is only 15 minutes. + 30 minutes minimum roundtrip

At the latest, you’ll want to arrive back at Heathrow two hours before your flight. This will give you enough time to make it through security and find your gate. + 2 hours

Total time: 4.5 hours, but if you’re cautious, you might want to bump that to 5 hours to account for delays.

Time remaining to explore London: 3 hours.

If you were arriving at a different London airport, like Stansted, you’d have to allow for a longer direct train journey—up to an hour—which would reduce your time in London to a point where you might find it less stressful to simply stay at the airport. It really depends on what you’d like to do with your time.

Don’t forget to think about the time of day, either. For example, if your layover is between 6am and 2pm, you’ll have some ideal time for exploring the city, but a layover from 11pm to 7am is a whole different story. Unless you’ve planned the layover to break up two long flights, crash at the hotel and start out fresh the next day, you may want to stick to a daytime layover.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the closest to Miami’s city center and is where most major airlines fly into. If your goal is to have a short commute from the airport to the city center, then this airport is the best option, but keep in mind that it’s also one of the busiest airports. Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, on the other hand, is smaller and not as crowded, but it has fewer options of airlines that fly there, and it’s a 40m drive to Miami’s city center.

I’m taking a cruise from Fort Lauderdale. Which airport should I fly into?

Passengers for cruises departing from Port Everglades should fly into Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Not only is it the closest airport to the cruise ship port and the city center, but the airport partners with the cruise lines to aid passengers in transit from the flight to the cruise. Those services include a cruise line employee who will meet you at baggage claim, as well as transportation to and from the cruise.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Florida

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Florida flight deals.
  • If you’re planning a beach vacation to the Sunshine State, keep in mind when searching for flights to Florida that some airports are closer to the beach than others. Key West International Airport (EYW) is one mile away from the nearest beach. Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is 3.5 mi from the coast, and Miami International Airport is 12 mi from the famous Miami Beach.
  • If budget is on your mind when planning your trip but you'd like to book your ticket with a major airline, search for flights to Florida that land in Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, Tampa International Airport (TPA), or Palm Beach International Airport.
  • Orlando is famous for Disney World, but if you're not traveling to Orlando for the resort, you should consider one of the other two main airports in the city. Those are Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) and Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB). Keep in mind that both airports serve fewer airlines, most of them operating budget flights.
  • Travelers flying into Florida for Daytona racing events should look for flights to Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB), which will be the closest airport. Alternative airports include Orlando International Airport (MCO) (1h), Orlando Sanford International Airport (1h), and Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) (2h).
  • If you’re planning to travel with your dog to Florida, be aware that dogs are only allowed on specific dog beaches. Top-rated dog beaches include Causeway Islands in Sanibel, Peanut Island in Riviera Beach, and Crescent Beach in Saint Augustine. The closest airports to each one of these beaches are Fort Myers Airport (RSW), Palm Beach International Airport, and Jacksonville International Airport, respectively.

Top 5 airlines flying to Florida

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

I hate their constant delays! It’s as if I cannot confidently make plans for timing when I'm traveling with them. I slept through it, so all I can say is it was good.

Did not wait long for wheelchair and attendant to arrive after checking in. Wheeled down to plane Was greeted with a smile when entering the plane Choice of snacks was very limited to 2 items. Seats are uncomfortable. My butt was sore after the 1st hour of flying. Needs better cushioning at seats.

Did not wait long for wheelchair and attendant to arrive after checking in. Wheeled down to plane Was greeted with a smile when entering the plane Choice of snacks was very limited to 2 items.

One hour delayed departure resulted in problems with planned ground transportation at my destination.

No WiFi No TV Bag of chips I guess it could be worse.

I really liked the way snacks and drinks were available throughout the flight!!! The flight attendants were also all fantastic!

From bag drop to boarding, it was great. In-flight is a little different. The seats were a little uncomfortable for that long of a flight. The rest of the cabin crew except for Eva was wonderful. Eva was not friendly at all. I've had to personally encounter her twice in-flight. First time was when I had to go to the lavatory in the back of the plane, and since it was the first for me to board such tiny plane, I didn't know we were using the crew toilet. She was giving me an attitude while telling me where and how to open it since it's not the regular push to open type of door. The second one was when I had to throw trash then use the lavatory again. I asked where to throw them, and unfortunately she was the only crew in the back doodling on her phone, she had to point it out to me with an attitude then told me to wait on the carpet, which I understand because I didn't realize that, but she could have been nicer. After all, I'm a paying customer, and assisting a passenger who isn't knowledgeable about the aircraft is one of the things she's there for. The rest of the experience and crew from bag drop to in-flight were excellent except for her.

Boarding process on JetBlue is an absolute disgrace. I can’t believe they can’t figure out a better way to board everyone. They called people with disabilities, mosaic and group A all at once and it was a disaster

The flight itself was fine.. the customer service was amonst the worst I’ve seen. When booking my flight, I selected my window seat as I always do because when I’m flying alone so I can rest against it without worrying about falling asleep on anyone.. Then when it came time to check in, there was no record of my seat selection and the only window that was left cost me an extra $74. I called and they said there was a glitch when I booked the first time and there was nothing they could do about it.. Meanwhile the only reason I was flying JetBlue was because I had a $50 credit from the last awful flight we had that was delayed for four hours… So it actually cost me more to use that credit. Never flying with them again.

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

For a 22 minute flight all you expect is for it to be safe and comfortable

Good movies, iffy pay WiFi, food ok- on time though and that was great!

Some of these FA’s need attitude check. Snarky bitches

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

I was not able to buy food in the flight. They refer to include your Credit card in the APP, and if you are not from USA (i have a credit card form Canada) it is not possible

The plane boarded and deplaned twice before the crew timed out. Flight was 7 hours late departing. Horrible experience!

Over two hours wait to get wheelchair assistance from arrival to the departure gate for LA was unreasonable even though there appreared to be heavy demand.

Everything was very good. Boarding and takeoff were on time and organized. Had a good flight

Horrible. Flight was delayed and very bumpy. I was super unhappy

No meal on a cross country flight? SFO-MiA is pretty much the definition of a coast to coast flight. No meal provided. Sky high wi-fi rates too. Stop nickel and diming your customers.

Absolutely filthy flight and not equipped for a trans US

Overall okay. Ipgrades ate worthless anymore. Wish I’d not been so loyal To them for so many years. Platinum many years. Gold for life. Usually 20th-30th on upgrade list.

The male steward shoved me hard when i sleeping on the isle, woke me up the only way incan descripe it was Violently. I wanted to cause a scene but was able to putnmy anger innch check, i want complain to AA

Good over all but my flight from. Miami to Barbados the airplane was very dirty like I have never seen before. It looked like that plane hasn’t been cleaned in a long time and I fly about one time a month.

Overall a fiasco. My first flight was delayed so late that I would have missed my connection. I had to cancel the flight and reschedule for the next morning. I took over half an hour to retrieve my luggage. I already paid $30 for checked in luggage for the flight I didn't take. When I checked in for my new flight on app I paid another $30. I went to the kiosk for my luggage tags and was charged $40. (My baggage didn't make it on the connecting flight but was delivered at 10:00 that night.) Later that day I requested a refund of the baggage fees. I received an email stating my refund was complete in the amount of $234.62. I didn't realize that meant my return flight was canceled until I tried to check in at the counter. They had refunded the wrong thing. It costed me $381.10 to book a new flight home. At least my baggage made it home with me.

First of all , lucky I caught our flight changes and we actually flew into chicago then Fort Myers

Everything was very good EXCEPT the food, on a five and a half hour trip. They only gave to us was snacks in first class. They didn't give us pillows or blankets.

Flight was delayed due to crew not being there, besides that it was a normal flight.

Actual CLT experience was rough. I've never seen the airport as bad in regards to security lines and wait. (For not being a holiday) A lot of folks missed their flight this morning. Spirit is fine. But wasnt offered a beverage somehow. No worries but some how I missed it.

Flight from Tampa to Houston was canceled. SPIRIT rebooked me and they double booked my seat. Conclusion I COULD NOT TRAVEL TO HOUSTON. I MISSED MY GRANDDAUGHTER BIRTHDAY. I would not recommend this company. I will file a complaint. I will never consider SPIRIT as an airline . It’s a faker.

My flight was cancelled and I am stranded in another state

The crew was great but it felt gross how spirit charges you for every little thing. Picking your seat should be free (first come first served). Beverages and food I get. But picking where I sit? Gross.

Horrendous. Wish they would have just shot me in the leg instead.

I was denied my flight bc of my 2lb chihuahua, despite having sent in correct documents to board.

Flight always gets delayed. Sat in the plane for over an hour before take off with no air con, still had to pay full price for snacks/drinks.

The airlines delay the flight 1 day and we refuse to take that option instead we need to take a bus ride, now we are expecting for refund the money, it was a horrible experience.

Spirit cancels my flight and I have been stuck here at the airline since March 3rd 2pm and still here everything is close they didn’t accommodate me with a room or nothing they rebooked my flight for 7:25pm to New Orleans then from New Orleans to Fort Lauderdale I Wang Arrive Homw Until The 5th of March I am missing work I hav e kids to get home to and I am currently stuck with no food nowhere to stay no renter cause everything close I spent all my money and I’m very disappointed trying to get home I’m very very mad frustrated and very disappointed

It would have been no e to have the option of a mid day flight and not super early or super late in the day.

There was no wifi, there was no usb charger on the planes Frontier lowered the weight limit on suitcases from 50 to 40 pounds Frontier now charges for a seat...really? If i don't pay for a basic seat, do i stand the whole flight? Frontier now charges for the carry on, just like for the checked suitcase The bundle pricing is way over priced.

Bought seats on the flight and they were supposed to be 2 and a jumpseat. Plane clearly changed and it was a regular 3 seat row. Asked for a refund and was denied. If I wanted to sit next to someone else I wouldn't have bought the seats..

Flying frontier reminded me of flying with my family in the 80’s in all of the worst ways possible. From poor customer service to little to no technology. The plane was dirty old and also stuck in the 80’s. From their seatbelts to not having anywhere to charge our phones the seats and the equipment I wasn’t sure if I was being punked or thrown back in time. Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again.

Everything was on time and smoothly run. All employees appeared happy and enjoying their job. The delay in take-off was unrelated to anything in Frontier’s control. I wish there were a caffeine-fee, sugar free soda drink option besides water. There are multiple zero sugar caffeine free options.

Everything was on time and smoothly run. All employees appeared happy and enjoying their job. The delay in take-off was unrelated to anything in Frontier’s control.

I like that the flight was not overcrowded, and I felt had space to spread out a little more. The flight was smooth for the most part no major turbulence. The crew was pretty good accommodating and professional.. the fellow passengers were cool as well… all good! Snacks always makes things better, but of course there were no snacks.

Be prepared for crowds and chaos upon arrival at the Orlando airport

Frontier is a mess. Kept changing flights and times on me. Ridiculous. Charged us twice for annual Discout Den membership.

Frontier system that tracts what you’ve paid for is horrible. I brought bags, tried to upgrade the weight of bag. Did it via the text service on their site. Got to the airport and they had no idea what was going on. Ended up paying way more than I was supposed to

5 MINTUES LATE TO THEIR CHECK IN AND THEY WACK ME 200.00 BUCKS FOR RE BOOKING FEE AND PUT ME ON ANOTHER FLIGHT. @ THE BOARDING GATE IWATCH THEM BOARD MY ORIGINAL FLIGHT RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME- TOATL SCAM!

Same-day flight change and standby

Learn about same-day flight changes and standby

Same-day flight change allows you to confirm a seat on a different flight on your day of departure on any American Airlines or American Eagle ® flight where eligible seats are available. Your new flight:

  • Must have the same departure and arrival airports
  • Can only be confirmed within 24 hours of departure of the desired flight

You can change your trip on aa.com or at the airport.

If you still want to try for a different flight, same-day standby lets you stand by for an earlier American or American Eagle ® flight (with the same route on your day of departure). Unlike same-day flight change, same-day standby doesn’t guarantee a seat on a flight.

Same-day standby allows you to fly on an earlier American or American Eagle ® flight on your day of departure if seats are available. You can request to be added to the standby list on aa.com or at an airport kiosk. Same-day standby does not guarantee a seat on a flight.

If you’re standing by for an earlier flight on your departure day, you'll stay on your original flight until you're confirmed on the earlier flight.

You can guarantee a seat on a different flight if same-day flight change is available. If it’s not available, you may be able to stand by for an earlier flight with same-day standby.

The standby policy applies to travel within and between the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean or Canada on American or American Eagle ® .

Customers who receive complimentary confirmed same-day flight changes

Request same-day flight changes on aa.com or at the airport.

  • Payment for extended holds is processed immediately.
  • You must extend the hold for all passengers in the itinerary.

The option to extend your hold is only offered on select routes and is subject to availability. It is only offered to customers traveling on American Airlines marketed and operated flights and American Eagle® services operated by Envoy Air Inc., SkyWest Airlines, Inc., or Republic Airline Inc.

No. You can’t make changes to the itinerary once it has been held using the extended hold feature.

If you’ve had a change in plans, you can cancel your existing hold and choose new flights. You would need to purchase the extended hold product again for your new itinerary (subject to availability).

In many instances, credit cards and conventional insurance such as auto, homeowners and health do not cover prepaid or added expenses associated with changes, interruptions and cancellations to your travel plans, and filing a claim could increase your premium cost. Most U.S. health insurance benefits are also reduced when traveling out of network, and may not cover the cost for overseas health care. In addition, medical transportation back home could be costly. Trip insurance can help protect your trip investment and may cover gaps left by other plans. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

Learn about different seat options in the Main Cabin

When you book a flight operated by American, you'll see the seat map after you choose your flights.

Go to “My trips/check-in” from the homepage and enter your name and record. From there, you can choose seats. If seats are unavailable, check back later or you can change seats when you check in.

If you're unable to choose seats when you book, check back closer to departure or we'll assign you a seat when you check in.

American Airlines withholds some seats until the day of departure to allow our airport personnel to accommodate passenger needs. If you are unable to reserve a seat at the time of booking, you may get your seat when you check in for your flight.

Seats may become available closer to the day of departure; you can visit aa.com frequently to check the available seats for your flight.

American makes every effort to reseat passengers in the same seats. When this isn’t possible, we’ll attempt to seat you in a like seat. We appreciate your cooperation when special circumstances won’t allow us to reseat you in your original assigned seat.

Preferred seats are standard legroom seats that are more favorably located throughout the Main Cabin.

Preferred seats are complimentary for:

  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum and Gold members
  • AirPass ticket customers when traveling on your AirPass
  • one world ® Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby members and companions traveling on the same reservation
  • Full-fare customers*
  • Active U.S. military passengers traveling on a military fare
  • AAdvantage AAnytime and Business Extra award ticket holders

*For travel ticketed in booking code Y on or after August 30, 2017, you'll no longer get complimentary Main Cabin Extra or Preferred seats. This includes AAnytime awards booked in Main Cabin.

Voluntary changes to paid seats are not refundable.

How to change or cancel an Allegiant Air flight

Allegiant Airbus A320 Bozeman

Booking a flight on discount carriers can save you a lot of money. But, before booking with Allegiant Air , you should understand the Allegiant cancellation policy.

Despite other airlines virtually eliminating change and cancellation fees during the pandemic , Allegiant still has very restrictive policies. Here's some helpful information to help avoid unnecessary fees.

Sign up for our daily newsletter for more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox.

Allegiant refund policy

24 hour round trip flights

Since all of Allegiant's flights take off or arrive at an airport in the United States, the airline must offer you a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking and it's more than seven days before your departure.

But, outside of that, Allegiant policy does not allow for any refunds.

Related: 6 ways to improve your low-cost flight experience

Allegiant cancellation policy

You can still recover some value if you need to cancel an Allegiant flight, though. Based on the Allegiant Air cancellation policy, customers who cancel an Allegiant flight can receive a voucher to use toward a future flight. However, you must cancel more than seven days before departure and pay a fee to obtain a voucher.

Flights are normally subject to a $75 fee per segment (not per passenger) to make changes or cancellations. However, Allegiant has temporarily decreased this fee to $25 per segment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even so, you'll still incur two cancellation fees to cancel a round-trip flight on Allegiant. And the voucher you receive is only valid for travel for up to one year from your original booking date.

Related: Allegiant announces Allways Rewards, a brand new loyalty program for leisure travelers

Avoid change and cancellation fees with Allegiant's Trip Flex

As noted above, you'll normally need to pay a change fee of up to $75 per person each way to change or cancel an Allegiant flight more than seven days before departure.

But, if you purchase Trip Flex when booking your flight, you can change or cancel your reservation once without any fees (up to one hour before departure).

Trip Flex is available as part of bundles that Allegiant sells along with your ticket, but you can also purchase it as a stand-alone option during the booking process.

24 hour round trip flights

Based on the typical Allegiant fare and the fee per segment to cancel, you'll want to determine whether Trip Flex makes sense for you. If you need to purchase other add-ons such as a personal item or a seat selection, then the additional cost to purchase a package with Trip Flex may be minimal.

Related: Allegiant used to love flying used planes; now it's betting big on new jets

24 hour round trip flights

Trip Flex allows you one free change to your trip. That means you should be able to change both segments of a round-trip flight, but you'd need to change both at the same time. Trip Flex could save you up to $150 on a round-trip flight if the airline returns to the $75 per segment price to change a flight.

One other item to be aware of is that Allegiant notes in its terms and conditions that all bundle purchases are nonrefundable. In addition, changing flights may require you to repurchase portions of your bundle.

Finally, keep in mind that the policies are different if you buy a vacation package itinerary. In particular, you'll typically need to change or cancel at least 72 hours before your scheduled departure, even if you'd purchased Trip Flex. If you change, you'll need to pay any increase in airfare, hotel and auto rental rates.

Related: Allegiant grows in Austin and Nashville with route expansion

Bottom line

The Allegiant refund policy is simple; the airline only offers refunds if you meet the requirements within 24 hours of booking. And the Allegiant cancellation policy isn't much better. The average Allegiant fare is generally under $100. So, a $75 cancellation or change fee per segment would wipe out most, if not all, of the value of your ticket.

If you think you may need to change or cancel an Allegiant flight, purchasing Trip Flex or a bundle when booking may be in your best interest. Before the pandemic, a change fee of less than $100 seemed like a deal. Now, these are some of the highest cancellation fees out there.
