From 2011-2013, AMALIE Arena had more than $62 million in improvements that have clearly revolutionized the industry and made it the premier entertainment venue in the state of Florida.

With a wide array of venues spread throughout the United States, it can be difficult to find one that distinguishes itself from the others. That is not the case with the renovated AMALIE Arena, Florida’s premier entertainment venue and home of the three-time Stanley Cup champions, Tampa Bay Lightning.

Boasting unique features like lightning-throwing Tesla coils, the 11,000 square-foot Budweiser Biergarten with incredible views of the city and a massive five-manual, 105-rank digital pipe organ, AMALIE Arena consistently ranks among the very best venues in the United States. The best part? This is only the beginning. A new era in Tampa Bay has arrived and it’s time you be a part of it. Our owners are committed to providing fans with a world-class experience at every game, concert and event.

The doors to the 670,000-square-foot AMALIE Arena (originally called the Ice Palace) first opened on October 12, 1996 with its first event, the Royal Hanneford Circus. The Circus was followed shortly thereafter by the first Lightning game played on October 20, 1996. The Lightning won 5-2 over the New York Rangers.

The arena has hosted numerous high-profile events including the 1999 NHL All-Star Game, the 2007 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2008 NCAA Women’s Final Four, the 2009 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2012 Republican National Convention, the 2012 NCAA Men's Frozen Four and more.

In 2002, the building was renamed from the Ice Palace to the St. Pete Times Forum as part of a new partnership with the St. Petersburg Times.

From 2011-2013, the publicly-owned AMALIE Arena underwent a $62 million transformation that was privately funded by Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment owner and chairman, Jeff Vinik.

On December 31, 2011 the St. Petersburg Times changed its name to the Tampa Bay Times, and the arena was unveiled as the Tampa Bay Times Forum to follow suit.

In August 2014, local Tampa Bay Company AMALIE Oil entered an agreement for the naming rights to the arena.

Big night for Tampa Bay sports fans

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Thursday was a big night for sports in the Tampa Bay area.

The Tampa Bay Lightning took on the Florida Panthers in game three of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Bolts fell to the panthers with a final score of 5-3.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also made their first-round draft pick. They were number 26 in the draft and have 7 total picks.

Graham Barton, Center, from Duke, was the first-round draft pick for the Bucs.

The Bolts nation is sad after this loss, but said they are still proud of the team and will root for them on Saturday.

Before the Bolts’ game, the energy was electric from the crowd.

“We’re home, baby, we are home! The Tampa Bay Lightning is home, go Bolts!” Amy Gallasteguy said.

“We’re ready to show that we own Florida, we own Florida! We run it here, Tampa Bay!” shouted a big group of fans.

Some of the fans said they have been cheering for the team for decades.

“I am the top fan, I’m the loudest person in this arena every time I get in there,” Gallasteguy said.

Fans were hopeful that playing at home would help turn the luck in their favor.

“We’re at home now, we’ve been down two before in the first round, so we’ll be alright,” another fan said.

“It’s a great environment and great community, look around, these are our people!” shouted a group.

At the same time, over at Raymond James Stadium, fans got ready as the Bucs made their first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

“I think it looks like we’re going for defensive player, maybe a defensive end, or something like that,” Brandon Lee Wagner said, before the team selected Barton. “It seems like a good pick, I’m sure they’ll make whoever they go with a good pick, a good addition to the team.”

“I think we kept a lot of the key players, which is a good thing, and I think if we build off of that, we can do beautiful things, like a Superbowl win,” Arden Dittmer said.

The Bucs will make seven picks in the draft.

“I’m looking forward to it, it’s a nice little preview before the season,” Wagner said.

“We’ll be alright, it’s one of those things where you have to go with what you need and whoever’s available. So, I believe we’re going to do good,” Dittmer said.

Both Bucs and Bolts fans said cheering for their teams is a family tradition.

“I was rooting for the Lightning in diapers, I mean, it’s just something that came naturally,” a fan said.

A tradition that some have passed to their grandchildren.

“Huge, everything they have is hockey. They get jerseys for Christmas, they know all the players names, all of the players’ names, and numbers,” a pair of grandmothers at the game said.

Breakaway Music Festival Tampa: Guide to parking, lineup, tickets and more

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

Get ready, electronic music lovers. Breakaway Music Festival is finally making its debut in Tampa this weekend.

The multi-stage festival takes place at Raymond James Stadium from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

What is Breakaway Music Festival? And why is it coming to Tampa?

Breakaway Music Festival is an immersive live music experience that debuted in Columbus, Ohio, in 2016. The goal was to bring world-class DJs and electronic dance music to underserved markets.

“It’s not Chicago, New York, Los Angeles or Miami, but anything in between,” said co-founder Zach Reuben.

There are now 11 Breakaway Music Festivals across the country, plus 9 additional stops on the Breakaway college tour. Over 100,000 fans attended in 2023.

Breakaway Music Festival has been eyeing Tampa for a while, Reuben explained, thanks to the city’s young population, growing workforce, large colleges and corporate headquarters. Breakaway Music Festival fills a void left in the market when Sunset Music Festival announced that it would not take place in 2024 .

“It obviously worked out for the better that it didn’t return, but it kind of was independent of our planning,” Reuben said.

Breakaway Music Festival’s lineup

The festival features two stages and a silent disco. The lineup includes a diverse range of genres, include EDM, pop, house, bass and four-on-the-floor music.

Illenium and Kaskade headline Friday, joined by ACRAZE, GUDFELLA, Ian Asher, Matroda, Night Tales, Ravenscoon, ROSSY and Said the Sky.

Saturday’s headliners are Zedd and SOFI TUKKER, with performances by ALLEYCVT, Crankdat, Deerock, Dion Timmer, Calcium, it’s murph, Moore Kismet, Sara Benyo, TroyBoi and ZUEZEU.

Three local DJs will be heading from the Ritz Ybor to the stage at Breakaway: Pushman, Myr and Taylorlace. Over twenty other local artists will perform at the silent disco.

Some ticket packages include hotel stays, shuttle services and local discounts. Visit breakawayfestival.com/tampa to learn more and purchase tickets.

The Ritz Ybor will be hosting the official Breakaway after parties starting at 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Matroda, Taylorlace and Pushman will appear Friday, with Crankdat, Myr and Wilco Beats performing Saturday. Purchase tickets ($25) and reserve VIP tables ($150) at www.theritzybor.com .

Both Breakaway Music Festival and the official after parties are 18+.

Weather this weekend

Breakaway Music Festival takes place outside, so pack sunscreen and make sure to visit the on-site water stations. The forecast calls for highs in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s. Rain is unlikely to occur in Tampa on Friday or Saturday.

The festival is a rain or shine event. Should severe weather interrupt the festivities, refunds will not be given. Updates will be announced at the festival and on social media.
