Avalanche in Sikkim News Live Updates: Seven tourists were killed and a dozen injured after an avalanche struck the Gangtok-Nathu La road in Sikkim on Tuesday afternoon. “All tourists & tourist vehicles have been accounted for. The rescue operation has been called off. Details of recovered tourists will be shared later,” a statement from the NDRF informed.

According to BRO, the avalanche struck 14th mile on Jawaharlal Nehru Road connecting Gangtok to Nathu La pass at approximately 12:15 pm. An estimated 20-30 tourists were feared to be trapped under the snow along with five-six vehicles after the avalanche. “By 3 PM, 14 persons were rescued and taken to nearby Army medical facility. However, seven persons succumbed. The other seven persons were administered first aid and returned to Gangtok,” the Army said in a statement.

Nathu La, one of the most important Himalayan passes in the country, is situated on the border with China and is a major tourist destination because of its scenic beauty. It is over 55 kilometres from Gangtok.

The East district has been experiencing rainfall and snowfall in the higher reaches since Friday, a weather official said. Forecasts and nowcasts on rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning have been issued, he said. 

In the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Tuesday, 50 mm rainfall was recorded by the Gangtok weather station, he added. (PTI)

? Sikkim's East District, which witnessed a massive avalanche that claimed several lives on Tuesday, ranks ninth in landslide density and risk exposure among all districts in the country.

? According to the Landslide Atlas of India, released by ISRO's Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre, Sikkim witnessed 1,561 landslides between 2011 and 2017, with most falling in the category of event-based landslides triggered by earthquakes or heavy rainfall.

? Sikkim's South District ranks eighth across the country in terms of landslide density and risk exposure. (PTI)

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang condoled the deaths, and said that he was praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.

"My heart goes out to the bereaved family and friends in this hour of grief and I pray that the departed souls rest in eternal peace," Tamang said. (PTI)

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he was deeply distressed by the news of the avalanche and expressed grief over the loss of lives.

"My thoughts are with the victims of this terrible tragedy, and their families. Wishing all the best to the teams involved in the rescue mission," he said in a Facebook post.

Sikkim: CM announces 'Visit Sikkim 2022' to boost tourism

GANGTOK : ‘Visit Sikkim 2022’, a declaration on year-long tourism promotion and marketing for Sikkim, was declared by Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay on Monday. The CM laid focus on having tourists in Sikkim for the whole year, instead of otherwise practised season-based tourism endeavour.

Good News : ‘North Sikkim Is Now Open For Tourists and Visitors’

Gangtok, 29 Nov : The Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has officially declared that, starting from December 1, 2023, tourists and visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Lachung-Yumthang axis.

In a press briefing, Department Secretary Prakash Chettri provided insights into the current state of tourism in the region, particularly in the aftermath of the floods that occurred on October 4th.

Chettri emphasized that the northern parts of Sikkim are currently experiencing the best season for tourism, assuring that everything, from transportation to accommodation, is now operating seamlessly with top-notch hospitality facilities. Although the Lachen-Gurudongmar route is presently inaccessible, the Secretary announced plans to make it accessible in coming time.

People of 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal and 32 Assembly seats in Sikkim will cast their votes the same day as voters of 102 Parliamentary constituencies across 21 states will exercise their polling rights in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election which has also begun today

Voting has begun for Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim on Friday. Polling began at 7:00 am and will end at 6:00 pm, according to the Election Commission of India. The closure of polling time might differ constituency-wise.

People of 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal and 32 Assembly seats in Sikkim will cast their votes the same day as voters of 102 Parliamentary constituencies across 21 states will exercise their polling rights in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election which has also begun today.

Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assembly Elections Latest Updates

• Voting for the 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal and 32 seats in Sikkim has commenced.
• Sikkim reported over 36.75% voter turnout for 32 Assembly seats and the lone Lok Sabha constituency by 1:00 pm, an official reported.
• Over 37.39% voter turnout was recorded in Arunachal Pradesh by 1:00 pm.
• Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu urged all “eligible voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers”.
• “As Arunachal Pradesh votes today to elect representatives for the eighth State Legislative Assembly and 18th Lok Sabha, I appeal to all eligible voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers. Let us overwhelmingly participate in this vibrant festival to enrich democracy. I also call upon the youth and first-time voters to take part in the elections,” the Arunachal CM wrote in an X post.
• The BJP won 41 seats in Arunachal Pradesh in the 2019 Assembly polls, and subsequently, seven MLAs of other parties, including the Janata Dal-United, joined the BJP.

• Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Thursday issued an appeal to voters to exercise their democratic rights.
• Reminding the significance of each vote, Kumar said that there have been instances when one vote has mattered in a critical contest.

"In the last two years, the Election Commission and its employees have worked hard to ensure a peaceful and simple voting experience. I would like to appeal to all to cast their vote," he said in a video message.

• Besides Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, assembly elections will also held in Odisha (in the fourth phase). Check full election schedule here.
•  The polling on Friday will kick off the world’s largest democratic exercise that will span the next six weeks and see nearly a billion citizens exercise their franchise.
• In terms of span, this will be the longest general election since India’s maiden Lok Sabha polls which lasted four months – from October 1951 to February 1952.

Assembly Election 2024 LIVE: An estimated 67.95% of the 4.64 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the peaceful polling for the 32-member assembly in Sikkim on Friday, officials reported. For the lone Lok Sabha seat, the turnout slightly exceeded 68%. This turnout was 10% lower than the 78.63% recorded in the 2019 assembly polls.
