St. Kitts Shore Excursions: Trains, Boats, & Beaches

St. Kitts and Nevis is an enthralling island nation that can be visited on a southern Caribbean cruise , though it’s not as well known with tourists as its larger neighbors to the north. St. Kitts and Nevis may be small islands, but a stop there comes with a variety of things to do. When visiting the port of Basseterre on a St. Kitts cruise , shore excursions will help you experience the best part of the tiny country.

One of the best ways to see a large portion of the island of St. Kitts is on the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. It’s a double-decker train that seems like it belongs in a different era. The top level is open air and provides 360-degree views of the scenery you’ll be passing, which consists of scenic coastline, lushly green forests, sugar cane fields, and little slices of the countryside of the island. This exciting yet laid-back mode of transportation is one of the most popular St. Kitts shore excursions.

If you want to be more active during your time in Basseterre, snorkeling is a great way to do so. Opt for a Caribbean shore excursion that combine a beach break with snorkeling gear so you can relax on a pristine St. Kitts beach and easily take sojourns from the sand to glide about in the water and discover its underwater world. Or you can go on a catamaran cruise that takes you on a tour of St. Kitts and Nevis as seen from the water before stopping at a coral reef for some snorkeling.

While deciding what to do in port, don’t forget about the Nevis part of St. Kitts and Nevis. Though your ship will be moored on the larger island of St. Kitts, several of the St. Kitts cruise excursions offer transportation there. You’ll enjoy a quick and scenic boat ride across the channel from Basseterre to Nevis. Once there, you can explore the little town by its harbor, visit breathtaking beaches, do some jungle hikes, or take a bus tour around the island.

To book these St. Kitts shore excursions and others, you simply need a cruise reservation! Reserve your stateroom or suite and then pre-reserve your perfect excursion with our easy-to-use online booking platform before your ship sails away to the Caribbean.

What To Do In St Kitts On A Cruise | 9 Amazing St Kitts Cruise Excursions

St Kitts Cruise Ship

Wondering what to do in St Kitts on a cruise? From scenic railways and zip-lining, to learning about the island’s history – these are the best things to do in St Kitts.

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to spend a full week on the magical island of St Kitts . I ate (lots), snorkelled, zip-lined, explored the island’s history and drank buckets full of rum punch.

Cruise Ship at St Kitts cruise port

I know that many of you visit as cruise ship passengers, with the likes of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess Cruises, and before you reach the island you’ll be offered a variety of interesting St Kitts cruise excursions. It might feel overwhelming as there are so many great options. When deciding what to do in St Kitts on a cruise, you need to have a think about your overall cruise ship itinerary, to figure out which islands are best for which activities.

St Kitt, Caribbean

In terms of St Kitts cruise excursions, you could take a relaxing trip through the countryside on the island’s famous scenic railway, enjoy  some of the best things to do in Basseterre, take a trip up to the historic Brimstone Hill Fortress, relax at a beach club or enjoy something a little more active, perhaps zip-lining or snorkelling.

St Kitts, Caribbean

So if you only have a few hours on dry land, what excursions should you do? Well, after docking in Basseterre and taking St Kitts cruise port’s advice to “Rush Slowly”(!) here are a few suggestions of things to do in St Kitts on a cruise…

Get a flavour of St Kitts in my video and scroll down to find out some of the top things to do.

What To Do In St Kitts On A Cruise – Best St Kitts Cruise Excursions

1. ride the st kitts scenic railway.

Built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane, the St Kitts Scenic Railway now takes tourists on a sightseeing trip around this rugged and beautiful island. The 3-hour, 30-mile journey offers some of the most spectacular views of the coastline, Mount Liamuiga (the island’s dormant volcano), the old sugar plantations and small Caribbean towns.

Plus once on board, you’ll have access to an all-inclusive bar serving delicious frozen cocktails. Pina colada anyone? This is one of the most popular St Kitts cruise excursions, and it’s a fun way to see the island.

All inclusive bar on the St Kitts Scenic Railway

2. St Kitts rainforest tour

If you’re a nature lover and wondering what to do in St Kitts on a cruise, let me remind you that the Caribbean isn’t JUST about beaches! St Kitts is home to an incredible thick rainforest just waiting to be explored.

St Kitts, Caribbean

The best way to get to know it is on a rainforest trek with O’Neil who’s lived on the island all of his life. I’d honestly say this is one of the best thing to do in St Kitts if you’re visiting by cruise ship, as it’s a wonderful contrast to life at sea.

He’ll help you spot monkeys, tell you which trees will bring you luck, the plants that can cure disease and once you’re done with that – you can find a vine for your finest Tarzan swing!

O'Neil's Rainforest Tour in St Kitts

3. Arts And Crafts At Romney Manor

If you’re an artistic type, and wondering about the best things to do in St Kitts on a cruise, you’ll love Romney Manor.

Learn how to weave colourful fabrics and make traditional Batik shawls at this former plantation-turned-crafts-centre and home to world-famous crafters Caribelle Batik.

Wander the tropical gardens and take a tour of the premises, watching artists in action creating colourful throws, quilts and scarves in the traditional way.

After having a look around, head to the gift shop and buy some souvenirs. I promise that no two pieces are the same!

St Kitts, Caribbean

4. Visit The Beautiful Cockleshell Bay

Located on the south side of St Kitts is Cockleshell Bay, a charming little beach with monkeys strutting across the sand, and the delicious scents of Caribbean jerk chicken wafting from rustic barbecue shacks.

The water here is crystal clear, warm and shallow, with small waves lapping the shore. Oh and if you want to see St Kitts’s little neighbour, you can look across The Narrows (small strait) to the island of Nevis.

Cockleshell Bay, St Kitts

5. Learn About The History Of St Kitts

There are historic landmarks scattered all over the island, so it’s understandable that one of the most popular St Kitts cruise excursions is to take an island tour and learn about the past.

Once the richest of all the English colonies in the Caribbean, the island’s economy was built on rum and sugar. You’ll see evidence of this former industry as you pass old sugar plantations and chimneys.

Some, like Ottley’s Plantation Inn, have been converted into hotels and restaurants so you can get right up close to the island’s history.

Visit a plantation - one of the top things to do in St Kitts. Ottley's Plantation Inn, St Kitts

For something different, head to Brimstone Hill Fortress (a must do in St Kitts). It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 800ft up. Not only is it a great place to soak up the island’s history, you can also enjoy the panoramic views beyond the huge canons.

If you’re only visiting for a day, perhaps on of the St Kitts cruise excursions, consider booking a tour like this one , designed to show you all the key sights in a short time.

6. Relax Into Caribbean Life

After all those days on the cruise ship, let loose with a beach day! Head to Cockleshell Bay where you can take your pick of activities, including jet skiing, stand up paddle-boarding and kayaking at St Kitts Water Sports . When you get hungry, grab a bite to eat and a frozen cocktail at Reggae Beach Bar . There’s a really fun vibe on this beach, and it’s a popular option if you’re visiting for the day, as it’s one of the best beaches in St Kitts (near cruise port in Basseterre).

Beautiful beach in St Kitts, Caribbean

If you’re more excited to see what’s happening below the water, you could hop on board a catamaran with Blue Water Safaris St Kitts . This was one of my favourite things to do in St Kitts when I visited. There’s an incredible underground world you forget about, and the water is so clear. Dive in and see!

They’ll take you snorkelling with turtles and tropical fish, and even show you a very mysterious shipwreck. If you’re lucky, you might even stop off on the island of Nevis.

Blue Water Safari crew, St Kitts

7. Visit Old Road Colonial Settlement

If you’re keen to turn back the clock and see what the historic Caribbean looked like, then visiting the settlement of Old Road on the west side of the island is a must. Known as the oldest British colonial settlement in the Caribbean, Old Road dates back to 1624, when the town was founded by Englishman James Warner. He was attracted to St Kitts by the abundance of tobacco plants. There’s a nostalgic, maritime feel to the town – a big contrast to the capital Basseterre where you’ll find St. Kitts cruise port.

St Kitts, Caribbean

8. Adventure Along The St Kitts Zip Line

Along with walking, snorkelling and swimming… in St Kitts you can zip-line! Head to Sky Safari Tours and scream at the top of your lungs as you fly over the thick forest. There are 6 zip-lines in total, with the final one a race against your partner.

If you’re travelling with kids, this is one of the St Kitts cruise excursions to pick. No doubt you’ll be a lot more scared than they are! They’ll absolutely love zooming through the air.

Zip-lining in St Kitts

9. Visit Frigate Bay In St Kitts

Many who visit the Caribbean by cruise ship get bundled off on tours, but sometimes it’s nice to do your own thing. If you don’t fancy one of the St Kitts cruise excursions, hop in a taxi from the cruise port to Frigate Bay.

This fun bay is dotted with rum and reggae bars galore. Check out the best beach bars and party hotspots, including the well-known Mr X’s Shiggidy Shack. This was another of my favourite things to do in St Kitts. There’s a really local, authentic vibe, and it wasn’t overrun with people. It’s a nice place to mix with the locals and soak up some of the Caribbean spirit too, literally in some cases!

On South Frigate Bay, you can take a dip in the warm, shallow waters of the Caribbean, or head over to the northern edge, where you’ll find bigger waves, hotels such as the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, and the greens of the Royal St Kitts Golf Club. Though not far from each other, the two sides of the bay feel like polar opposites – and I’d recommend exploring both of them if you have time when you’re planning what to do in St Kitts on a cruise.

If you’re looking for somewhere delicious to eat during your visit to St Kitts, check out the best restaurants in St Kitts here .

Description

Jagged volcanoes soaring above azure and turquoise seas, dense rainforests in myriad shades of green, rolling fields of sugarcane--welcome to St. Kitts. Along with its neighbor, Nevis, St. Kitts presents an exotic landscape more common to Polynesia than the Caribbean. The islands' terrain, rich soil, and climate made them ideal locations for raising sugarcane. In fact, St. Kitts and Nevis were once the crown jewels of the Caribbean. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Spain, France and England vied for control of the islands, with the English finally winning out in 1787. Today, British and French heritage is evident on both islands. Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts, boasts fine, restored colonial buildings. Impressive Brimstone Hill Fortress, called the "Gibraltar of the West Indies," is one of the most impressive fortresses in the Caribbean.

More about St. Kitts Points of Interest

The Gibraltar of the West Indies boasts expansive views overlooking St. Kitts and Nevis. One of the best preserved military fortresses in the Americas, Brimstone Hill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The oldest sugar plantation on St. Kitts was once owned by Sam Jefferson II, an ancestor of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. The property contains ruins, petroglyphs, botanic gardens, and rainforest.

Masters of the ancient Indonesian technique of wax resist dyeing; the artisans of Caribelle Batik transform Sea Island cotton into beautiful garments that are sold in the shop at Romney Manor.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is a vintage double-decker sightseeing train that showcases an historic sugar cane route. Refreshments and live entertainment add to the adventure.

Wealthy landowners during the early estate days of St. Kitts have left behind grand homes which have been restored and filled with antiques.

Pinney's Beach is three miles long stretching from just outside of Charlestown to Cades Bay on Nevis. It is considered to be one of the loveliest beaches on this charming sister island of St. Kitts.

Once sprawling with sugar plantations, this reef-laden Caribbean gem boasts rainforests and tropical gardens that have enticed the likes of many a suitor, including the late Princess Diana.

Sailing, kayaking and rainforest walks are popular diversions for those seeking adventure.

The most notable is the St. Kitts Carnival , also known as Sugar Mas, which takes place from late December to early January.

  • Goat Water : Despite its name, goat water is a hearty stew made with goat meat, breadfruit, green papaya, and dumplings, seasoned with local herbs and spices. This dish is a staple at festive occasions and a must-try for those seeking authentic Kittitian flavors.
  • Conch Fritters : Conch, a type of sea snail, is minced and mixed with flour, eggs, and seasonings, then deep-fried until golden. Served with a dipping sauce, these fritters are a popular snack or appetizer.
  • Roti : Influenced by Indian cuisine, roti in St. Kitts is a flatbread filled with curried chicken, beef, or vegetables. It’s a favorite for a filling lunch.

Desserts in St. Kitts often feature local fruits and spices. Coconut is a favorite ingredient, used in cakes, candies, and tarts. Guava cheese, a sweet, concentrated jam-like treat, and sweet potato pudding are also popular.

Officially named the Federation of St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis, St Kitts and Nevis is a small country formed by two islands in the Leeward Islands chain of the West Indies. Basseterre, the capital city of St Kitts, was founded in the 17th century and is one of the oldest seaports in the Eastern Caribbean.

With its capital city Charlestown, Nevis Island is smaller and situated around 3 km/2 miles south of St Kitts. St Kitts Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at Port Zante in Basseterre, the capital city located on the southwest coast of the island. Due to its deep water harbor, Port Basseterre has two berths that can accommodate both large cruise vessels and cargo ships.

Sometimes, cruise ships anchor at the cargo port located a couple of miles further, and in that case, the tender boats are provided to transfer the cruise passengers ashore. On the west side of Port Zante, a small yacht marina is where the tenders normally drop passengers off when the ship is anchored.

St Kitts cruise port - Port Zante.

Port Zante is located within a short walk from the historic center of the city and the port itself is developed and offers a wide variety of facilities. Upon exiting the gangway, after several minutes you’ll reach a vast square filled with restaurants, bars, a casino, souvenir shops, duty-free stores, and international brands including Diamonds International, Effy, Harley-Davidson, and many others.

You will also find a tourist information center, restrooms, tour booths, and a taxi rank. The shore excursion meeting place is usually in the Arrivals Hall located at the terminal entrance (always double-check the tour ticket, though).

St Kitts ferry terminal is situated next to the cruise port terminal (a 5-minute walk) and provides daily ferries between Basseterre and Charleston (Nevis).

Getting Around St Kitts Port

  • Basseterre city center is only a few minutes’ walk from the cruise port and can be easily explored on foot. The port area is flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties and wheelchair users.
  • Port Zante boasts over 60 duty-free stores, selling watches, jewelry, cosmetics, clothing, and handmade souvenirs. There is also a small craft market (“Amina craft market”) where you can buy artwork and handicrafts made by locals.
  • Public transportation is available, however, taxis are the best way to explore the island. I always suggest checking with the tourist information center for guidelines on taxi rates.
  • Transportation used in the Caribbean is usually minivans or mid-size buses with little space for storage.
  • The official currency in St Kitts and Nevis is the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD; currency symbol – X$). 1 USD equals 2.70 XCD. US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted. Check in advance if your change will be given in US dollars.
  • Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport is the only airport in St Kitts and is located 3.5 km/2.2 miles (a 10-minute drive) north of the cruise port.

Upon exiting the terminal area, you’ll find yourself on Bay Road street filled with numerous shops, restaurants, and a few historic landmarks. Basseterre’s historic old town is located a stone’s throw from there. To get there, turn left after you exit the terminal and in a couple of minutes you’ll reach an old, arched 19th-century building housing the National Museum , where you can enjoy exhibits on local history and learn about St Kitts’ rich cultural heritage.

After you pass through the archway, walk straight and you’ll come across Berkeley Memorial , a green iron clock tower standing in the middle of the Circus Square , a small yet busy roundabout that used to be the site of slave auctions back in the past. If you continue to walk along Fort Street, north of Circus Square, you’ll stumble on another architectural gem – Saint George with Saint Barnabas Anglican Church with a stunning bell tower, built on the site of a former Notre Dame Catholic church dating from the 17th century.

Do not miss this unique sightseeing tour on the “Last Railway in the West Indies”, the only and last operational railway in the Caribbean! Enjoy the Caribbean countryside and learn all about the history of St. Kitts on a 30-mile circle route by train and a small sightseeing bus.

The railway was constructed in the early 20th century to transport sugar cane from St Kitts’ sugar plantations to the sugar factory in Basseterre. The railway tour normally takes 2h 45 minutes (2 hours by train, 45 minutes by bus) and takes you around the eastern part of the island.

You’ll ride for approximately 30 km/18 miles on double-decker railcars allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views from the top. The bus portion includes around 20 km/12 miles on small, air-conditioned sightseeing buses.

This tour is one of St Kitts’s highlights and allows you to take in the stunning views of the coast, mountains, forests, villages, farms, canyons, and bridges. You’ll see landmarks such as St. Paul’s Village, Brimstone Hill Fortress, and Old Road Town. It is a scenic train ride and stops at sights are not included.

A ride from Port Zante to the departure point of the railway takes only 10 minutes. This tour is not wheelchair accessible, as the buses and train don’t have a lift and there are steps to be managed. Also, buses cannot take wheelchairs and scooters as they are small/mid-sized.

The fortress was constructed by African slaves between the 17th and 18th centuries and sits on a steep volcanic hill providing stunning views of the island’s countryside, coastline, and nearby islands.

Fort George Citadel is one of the areas you can explore and here you can visit Fort George Museum displaying exhibits and interesting historic artifacts. You will hear stories of the soldiers, slaves, and local people, and watch a short video about the fort’s history in an air-conditioned room.

If you are familiar with St Kitts, then take a trip over to his sister island Nevis! From the Port Zante pier, there is only a 5-minute walk to the ferry station from there you can take a 45-minute scenic boat ride over to Nevis.

The ferry pier in Nevis is located at Charlestown , the capital city and birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. The ferry from St Kitts to Nevis departs around ten times per day (usually once per hour) and there are several different companies offering ferry rides. You’ll need to select a specific return time when buying a round-trip ticket. The ferries are quite small, so don’t wait for the last ferry, and make sure you plan your day according to your ship schedule.

6. Island Sightseeing

If this is your first time in St Kitts and you want to get to know the island, make sure you start your day on a guided tour of St Kitts and learn the history and lores of St Kitts. Many of these tours will make stops at several landmarks providing you with the opportunity for great photo stops.

One of them is Timothy Hill located at the southern end of the island where you can see the stretch of land that separates the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean (on a clear day you can also see the island of Nevis in the background).

Timothy Hill Viewpoint is located only a 10-15 minute drive from the St Kitts cruise terminal and what you’ll see there is absolutely breathtaking! The area is quite busy and you’ll see many locals selling stuff and offering pictures with wild monkeys (agree on the price first!).

Timothy Hill viewpoint in St Kitts

Another famous landmark and a frequent stop in sightseeing tours is Romney Manor , located 25 minutes drive along the west coast toward Brimstone Hill Fortress. Romney Manor was a plantation house owned by the great, great, great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson.

Nowadays, a part of the estate has been transformed into a gorgeous, European-style garden filled with Caribbean tropical plants. Romney Manor is also home to Caribelle Batik and in the museum, you can see artisans demonstrating the batik process.

You can do sightseeing by bus, ATV, or dune buggy  – depending on your preference, physical shape, and budget. Some of the tours also include stops at Brimstone Hill Fortress and Basseterre highlights.

If you are a beach person, you should definitely consider spending some time at one of the island’s gorgeous beaches. Below is the list of the best beaches in St Kitts:

  • South Frigate Bay – One of the most popular beaches in St Kitts, this white sandy paradise offers calm waters making it ideal for snorkeling activities – look out for sea turtles and colorful sea life, and don’t forget to bring snorkel gear. South Frigate Bay is located south of Basseterre, around a 10-minute drive from Port Zante (5.7 km/3.5 miles).

South Frigate Bay - St Kitts

  • North Frigate Bay – At this beach located north of South Frigate Bay, the waters are a little rougher as it is located on the Atlantic side. • South Friars Bay – This golden sandy beach is located on the Caribbean side of Saint Kitts, south of Frigate Bay, approximately 15 minutes drive from the port of Basseterre (8 km/5 miles). Here you will find the renowned Carambola Beach club, restaurants, and rustic beach bars as well as water activities available for rental. This is a popular beach for cruise ship passengers due to its calm, pristine waters and one of the best snorkeling on the island (you will find an abundance of marine life in the southern part next to the Shipwreck Beach Bar).

South Friars Bay, St Kitts beaches

  • North Friar’s Bay – This beach is not really for swimming or snorkeling as it is located on the rough Atlantic side, north of South Friars Bay. This beach doesn’t have any amenities but is ideal for long walks along the beach and scenic views of the shore. It is located approximately a 12-15 minute drive from the port.
  • Cockleshell Bay Beach – This gorgeous white sandy beach is located on the southern tip of the island facing Nevis, approximately 20 minutes drive from the St Kitts cruise port (16 km/10 miles). On Cockleshell Beach, you will find local restaurants, bars, and facilities available at a fair price. Snorkeling is possible at this beach, however, it is not considered to be great.
  • Dieppe Bay Beach – If you are looking to experience a black sand beach at a tranquil location, then make your way to the northern part of the island. There are no amenities available at the beach, however, swimming and snorkeling are quite enjoyable. Arthur’s restaurant is nearby if you are looking for something to eat and drink. This beach is located a 40-minute drive from the port.

Duration 3 hrs

This scenic rail tour runs in a complete circle around the island allowing visitors the opportunity to see the entire country by rail and by road. No trip to this two-island federation is complete without the experience of traveling on the new St. Kitts Scenic Railway, one of the most interesting train rides in the world. This one-of-a-kind narrow gauge railroad was built almost a century ago to deliver sugar cane from the fields to the sugar mills in the capital city of Basseterre. This still operational railway now provides a fascinating way to see the island from the comfort of double-deck railcars built specifically for touring the island of St. Kitts. All guests will have a seat on both levels of the railcar. The upper level features a spacious open-air observation deck with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The lower level provides air conditioned comfort with expansive vaulted windows. Island ambiance is evoked with comfortable rattan furniture, complimentary specialty drinks, island music and a colorful narrative. The railway hugs the northeastern coastline with fields of sugarcane from the shoreline up to the mountains. The volcanic mountain ranges rise nearly 4,000 feet above sea level coated with lush green rainforests. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Your conductor will point out old sugar estates, sugar mills and windmills while giving insight in to the island’s unique history. Your experience is complimented by a scenic drive along the southern coast. Enjoy excellent vistas of Brimstone fortress, the British "Gibraltar of the Caribbean", Middle Island where an ancestor of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson’s is buried and the neighboring island of Nevis. A truly unique experience!
