Beach in Thailand

Krabi holidays

  • Accommodation

That quintessential Thai image of a brightly painted longtail boat moored in turquoise water? It’s likely to have been taken from one of Krabi’s trademark karst islands. The province stretches along Thailand’s southeast coast, graduating from a thick jungle interior to blonde beaches that taper gently into bathwater-warm water. More than 150 limestone islands disperse out into the Andaman Sea, topped with frothy clumps of jungle and fringed with mangroves.

Things to see and do in Krabi

Krabi town and surrounding hills.

Krabi Town rests on the banks of the Krabi River and, despite its collection of cafés, trinket stalls and hotels, has managed to retain its ambience as a traditional fishing port. With its own airport, the town acts as a transport hub, supplying boat trips, snorkelling tours and diving expeditions. Overlooking the town is Khao Khanap Nam, a pair of hills that rear above the water like two sharks.

Krabi

The best way to see the paintings is on a guided canoeing tour, where you can paddle from island to island. To reach most sites (many of which are now protected), you navigate coastal mangrove forests and float through winding cave tunnels. As well as the paintings, many caves have twisting formations of stalagmites and stalactites.

Outlying islands

Many of the other islands also warrant exploration, which you can do by traditional longtail boat on a private tour. Koh Kai (Chicken Island) is named after its poultry-shaped rock formation and, at low tide, you can wander along a sandbar to nearby Tub Island. A curve of healthy coral lies off the island’s west coast, where you’ll often see shoals of striped angelfish and sandbanks studded with starfish.

For some of the best snorkelling and diving, travel farther south to the Phi Phi National Marine Park, particularly Ko Phi-Phi Leh island. Here, you can swim in crystal-clear water under the gaze of sheer limestone cliffs.

For something more active, Krabi is one of the best places in Thailand for rock climbing, with a range of routes from beginner’s level to the more advanced. Take a guided lesson at Railay Beach and you can try rappelling, abseiling and top-rope climbing — all with views across the Andaman Sea.

Phang Nga Bay

Limestone karst, Krabi, Thailand

Much of the bay falls within Ao Phang Nga National Park and has stayed free from development. You will see the occasional stilted fishing village — good places to stop for a freshly grilled seafood lunch.

Some areas of the bay can get busy, so it pays off to take a private boat tour out to the lesser-visited regions (of which there are many). Cruising between the vertical limestone cliffs, you can stop to venture into the water, seek out hidden lagoons or stroll along the secluded coves. Many boats come equipped with kayaks for you to use to explore caves or the coastal mangrove forests.

Best time to visit Krabi

Krabi enjoys a year-round warm, tropical climate. January to March tends to be the driest season with calm seas and moderate temperatures — although this is also the busiest. Late March to April can be occasionally a little cloudy but much quieter. Rainy season is from May to October, although if you’re prepared for a few showers and cooler temperatures, hotels are very good value and the beaches peaceful.

  • Entrance fee is 400 ($12,54)

Susan Hoi is not only a fascinating beach, but is the home to an incredible amount of  SEA crustacean shells and fossils. Due to the unusual landscape of the beach, it has been dubbed the Fossil Beach. Be prepared to have your mind blown by the ancient remains of the ocean’s creatures and the now dried up plates of what used to be a swamp.

The Susan Hoi site is found within the Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park and captivates people worldwide who know about its existence. There are said to be only two other places like it in the whole world! The fossils date back to forty million years ago, making this one of the most outstanding places to add onto our three-day itinerary in Krabi.

Susan Hoi, Krabi

Susan Hoi once used to be a thriving large freshwater swamp, hosting an immense amount of creatures and critters within its banks and surrounding vegetation. Once the swamp dried out, the layers of shells that were left behind created huge rock slabs. These rock slabs are now humorously called “shelly limestone,” and they rest on layers of lignite .

The unique beauty of one of the most gorgeous Krabi landmarks is unforgetable and will surely have you thinking about what life on earth could have been like 40 million years ago.

Krabi Night Market

  • The entrance to the market is free!
  • No Krabi trip itinerary would be complete without the famous Krabi night market!
  • This is a must-see place if you are spending the Weekend in Krabi, as it is hosted on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

Krabi Night Market, Krabi

The Krabi Nightmarket is by far the most important shopping experiences to have during your Krabi vacation! Over 50 stalls get put up, and you will find everything from street food and clothing to culinary items and home decor. The store holders are friendly and very well organized, so you won’t have to deal with bad service. Just be prepared for the noise, as this is a place that truly showcases the confident and boisterous nature of the Thai people.

You will be surprised by what you may come across, and you are sure to be somewhat charmed by the way that the locals put together this event.

Phra Nang Cave Beach

  • This beautiful beach is found in Ao Nang.
  • You can easily find resorts and hostels nearby that would make for the best place to stay in Krabi.

You can escape into the eerie and yet curious cave of the sea princess in Krabi and witness the way that the locals pray and worship her. There is a shrine where you will find countless incense sticks, photos and spiritual paraphernalia that has all been placed in her honor!

  • An incredible island found near Krabi and accessible by ferry.
  • A place that has well preserved the old ways of Krabi, Thailand.
  • Entrance into the village is free!

Embark on a journey and humbly explore the old village of Koh Klang. The village is a mere 26 square-meters, and it is entirely made up of indigenous plant life, rivers, canals, mangrove forests, and peaceful beaches. The inhabitants of this island are natives, and they live in a way that has not been tainted by the west, maintaining their roots and keeping to the ways of the old.

The name Koh Klang means “middle island,” and it has been given this name because it is between two wide estuaries. On the east, you will find the Krabi River, where it will take you a short five-minute ferry ride to get back to Krabi.

Koh Klang, Krabi

Most tourists don’t go to Koh Klang. This is because it is native land and does not offer a lot in the way of mainstream tourism with no major attractions or must-see sites. The only exciting sightseeing wise will be of some amazing rural landscapes. However, it does offer something that other places in Krabi may not- an authentic looking glass into the ways of the ancient Thai natives.

The people of Koh Lang live simply as a way of life, and they enjoy the harmony and simplicity of it all. This is a wonderful way to appreciate other lifestyles, and broaden our understanding of cultures and people.

Mu Ko Lanta National Park

  • The Mu Ko Lanta National Park is a huge part of Krabi’s nature conservation!
  • The park was established in 1990, so it is relatively new.
  • Entrance fee is 200 ($6,26) for adults and 100 ($3,13) for children

Mu Ko Lanta National Park consists of several gorgeous Thai islands! The park boasts rugged hills that roll over the Andaman sea, covered in thriving plant life and providing spellbinding views.

You can venture into the dense rainforests and discover the neverending bliss of Krabi’s vegetation, breathing in air that is thick with life and an earthy scent. You can even find massive mangrove forests, as the Mai Ngam, South Mai Ngam, and Ngu islands are absolutely covered in them!

Mu Ko Lanta National Park, Krabi

Taking a turn for the unusual, you may also come across nomadic sea gypsies called the Chao Le that live in the forests and islands of the national park. They are said to set boats adrift during the full moon of June and November, as it is a tradition of theirs to draw in good luck.

Mainly what you’ll find during your great adventure at Mu Ko Lanta National Park is outstanding and private white sand beaches, jaw-dropping viewpoints, hidden walking trails, and some incredibly impressive ancient caves.

Insider Tip: Like at the National Mosque, dress conservatively to skip the queues for robes.

The province of Krabi is renowned for being a safe place for both extensive and short visits. The locals are incredibly friendly, and most travelers don’t experience any kind of threats or mishap during their stay. With this in mind, we would still love to cover some safety tips in our Krabi itinerary to make sure that everything goes smoothly during your island adventure!

Pickpockets are all over the world, and Krabi is no exception. Be sure to watch your belongings and don’t let strangers get too friendly with you out of the blue. This should not be a major issue, but it is something to remember and stay cautious of.

Of course, behave sensibly when partying and when walking about at night. Keep friends and travel companions close when going places on foot at night, and stay away from suspicious alleyways.

Although crime happens everywhere, the main danger in Krabi doesn’t come from the people, but more from mother nature herself. Beach safety is something to be aware of, as the ocean can become rough during the monsoon season from May to October.

Otherwise, rip tides aren’t lethal but are better to be avoided. Remember to also be careful of mooring boats! Thankfully, Krabi’s marine life species aren’t poisonous, so there are no threats from the creatures of the sea.

25 Best Things to Do in Krabi, Thailand

Krabi is the most relaxing part to be in all of Thailand , it is a province that has the most stunning scenery imaginable, beautiful white beaches that stretch on for miles, a jungle and over 200 islands just of the coast. Krabi covers quite a large area so a lot of the attractions require a fair bit of traveling but when everywhere you look is beautiful it is no hardship at all.

The best time to visit is between November and April as the weather in the South of Thailand can be unpredictable but with many places now opening all year you will always find something to do.

The airport in Krabi is offering more routes and more frequent flights than ever before so come and explore the best things to do in Krabi !

1. Escape From It All At Railay Beaches & Caves

Railay Beach, Krabi

Here you will find stunning white sand, breath taking views and fantastic limestone cliffs. When you arrive at Railay you will not find any roads or cars because of its cut off location, just a few long tail boats and a couple of bars to spend your evenings in. If you want to really feel away from the world this might just be as good as it gets.

Try this half day rock climbing tour on Railay Beach (includes hotel pick-up & drop off and a professional guide/instructor).

2. Rent Your Own Boat Or Hire A Guide

Krabi Boat

There are roughly 200 islands sitting just off the Krabi coastline, some are small rocks jutting out of the sea, some are quite a lot larger but still remain uninhabited and some are large islands with many inhabitants living a normal life. You can rent a boat from Krabi town or Ao Nang and explore the islands on your own if you are a keen sailor. Alternatively you can rent a boat that comes with a guide so that you can relax whilst everything is taken care of. Where to stay

With so many great places to stay in Krabi, it’s definitely a place you’ll want to spend more than just a couple of nights in. On the mainland, Krabi Town is home to the best markets in the province and offers a glimpse into authentic city life in Thailand. What to eat

Kua Kling is a popular southern Thai dish

Located in southern Thailand, Krabi is a dream destination if you’re a fan of fiery curries. Local specialities such as gaeng tai pla might look unappetising due to their appearance but prove to be a fiery-hot dish with a depth of flavour that’s unlike anything you might be used to. Gaeng som is another spicy curry speciality in the region, but there’s also more to Krabi than soupy curries. Kua kling is a hot, dry type of curry that’s an 11 on the heat scale, while khao mok gai is a biryani-esque dish that might just become your new favourite. Keep an eye out for hoi chak teen . The shellfish is famous in Krabi, and it’s the perfect finger food to be eaten alongside an ice-cold beer.

Where to eat

Sample seafood at the Walking Street Market in Krabi

If you’re a fan of bustling night markets, you’re in luck. While the islands might have their own local markets, if there’s one you should visit in Krabi, it’s undoubtedly the Walking Street Market. Held on Fridays to Sundays, this weekend night market is well worth rearranging your schedule for when you’re in Krabi to make sure you don’t miss it. Held in Krabi Town, this market in the centre of the city comes alive at night, where the usual sois and shops are transformed into row after row of freshly cooked food, hand-crafted souvenirs and the latest in Thai fashion. Of course, there are local eateries that are worth checking out, too, as well as heaps of Western restaurants all over Krabi, but the night market is the number one culinary experience in the province. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

The Tiger Cave Temple is surrounded by ridges of limestone mountains

As we’ve already mentioned, the night market is the big one, but Krabi Town has much more to offer than just that. The Tiger Cave Temple, located a few minutes away from the centre of town, is a 1,247-step climb up a mountain that rewards those who make the effort with stunning views of the town and the river. Visitors might also be interested in taking the 2-minute ferry across to Koh Klang, a Muslim-populated island just a short hop from scenic Thara Park. With its rustic setting, agricultural spaces and lack of development, it makes for an interesting look at Thai rural life that’s a far cry from what you may have already seen on your trip.

Away from Krabi Town, Ao Nang is probably the best place to base yourself for beach-related activities. As well as the gorgeous Ao Nang Beach, others such as Nopparat Thara Beach and the beaches at Railay are just minutes away, meaning you’re sure to find one that’s just right for you. As well as bars and restaurants, Ao Nang is also a great place to book tours and excursions, such as diving trips and island tours that are well worth your time.

Maya Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Thailand

Arguably the most famous of all of Thailand’s islands, there’s plenty to see and do at Phi Phi. The big one is Maya Bay, which was made famous thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Hollywood flick The Beach. It’s a gorgeous bay surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs and home to a gorgeous stretch of soft, white-sand beach. There are plenty of beaches, bars and clubs to keep you busy on Phi Phi, and it’s probably the best place to party in the province, too. Try a night at the Reggae Bar, famed for its boxing ring in the centre of the bar – brave punters can enter the ring and trade blows for glory, a medal and that all-important free cocktail bucket.

For a more calming island experience, try Koh Lanta. Much larger than Phi Phi and with more beaches and natural spaces to explore, it has a bit of a reputation of being a “hippy” place, so you’re bound to have a relaxing time. That said, there’s still a vibrant nightlife scene here, too, as well as plenty of cultural experiences to be found. Take a trip to the districts of Sala Dan and Lanta Old Town; the teakwood shophouses are a throwback to a forgotten time and host a range of souvenir shops and restaurants serving fine fare.

Krabi travel blog: When is the best time to go to Krabi?

Krabi is located in the hot tropical region of Thailand where outdoor temperatures rarely go below 27 degrees Celsius. This region has only two main seasons: The dry season (from December to May) and the rainy season (from June to November).

audley travel krabi

The best time to visit Krabi is in late January to March, when the outdoor temperatures are acceptable, quite pleasant, the sky is clear and avoid the peak months of Christmas and New Year. In contrast, many visitors prefer to come in the rainy season, simply when Krabi is very cool and also less touristy.

Krabi travel guide: Getting to Krabi

If you going from Vietnam, there is currently no direct flight to Krabi but still have to transit in Bangkok. From Bangkok, there are many ways to get to Krabi such as plane, train or bus. In the above ways, the plane and bus are more popular because the train looks quite bad but more expensive than the bus. During my last trip, I took a Nok Air flight from Bangkok to Krabi, when return to Bangkok I took the bus.

Read more: Bangkok to Krabi — How to go to Krabi from Bangkok?

I fly with Nok Air, the airline I think is very good because of the quality of service, cheap price and free checked baggage up to 15kg, they also serve a light meal. Nok Air is based at Don Muaeng airport, but if you fly with this airline, you can refer to the article on how to getting around Bangkok to know how to go from central Bangkok to Don Mueang Airport. If you buy cheap tickets of Nok Air to Krabi, the ticket price is only 1,000 Baht. In addition to Nok Air, there are many other airlines with routes to Krabi such as Air Asia, Thai Airways, etc. You should check the fare often and early to hunt cheap tickets.

Krabi-island-thailand3

If you traveling by plane, you will landing at Krabi Airport, about 20km from Krabi Town and 25km from Ao Nang Beach. To getting from the airport to the above two locations, the best way is that you take the shuttle bus with the corresponding fare of 90 Baht to Krabi town and 150 Baht to Ao Nang, the shuttle buses park right outside the door of the airport terminal. Note that when you come to Krabi and want to take the boat to Koh Phi Phi island, you can buy tickets of the travel agency right at the airport, then take the bus to the ferry pier. The bus from the airport will not go straight to the pier but take you to the travel agency office in the center of Krabi, from here you take a break for a while, close to the departure time of ferry they will take you to the pier by Songthaew.

audley travel krabi

Bus in Thailand is big car, very convenient and good service, bus tickets can be bought in advance via the website https://12go.asia/en , priced at over 600 Baht and can be reserved seat. Return from Krabi by bus you can buy tickets directly from your hotel at 600 Baht/way. There is air conditioning, warm blankets on the bus, free snacks are two boxes of milk, water and cakes. It takes about 12 hours to traveling, departure time you can free to choose, in the middle of the road they also serve a free meal. Although the meal is not very good for me because of Islam food is not suitable, but I appreciate their service quality, completeness and comfort. When taking the bus, I choose the night bus running from 4:40pm and arrive Bangkok at 5pm, sleeping on the bus to save a night at the hotel.

How to get to the bus station

  • If you take the bus from Bangkok to Krabi, you will have to go to Bangkok Southern Terminal, also known as Sai Tai Mai (with the location on the map on page https://12go.asia/ ) located quite far on the other side of Chao Phraya River from the city center, by taxi (cost about 200 Baht) or take the bus number 28, 35, 66, 146, 507, 511. To get to Krabi bus station you can take Songthaew for 60 Baht to Ao Nang or Krabi town.

  • If you take the bus from Krabi to Bangkok, you can take Songthaew from Ao Nang or Krabi to the bus station (the bus always runs on the road, so you can stand and wave or ask your hotel helps you). When the bus arrives in Bangkok, it will usually drop off at Mochit, the bus station is close to Chatuchak market, you can take the bus from the station to catch the Skytrain (about 2km from the bus station) into the city center or if you are familiar with the bus, you can take a bus go straight to the hotel (bus 515 to Khao San and Rachatewi BTS station).

Krabi blog: How to get around Krabi?

The most convenient means of transportation on the island and getting around the main areas is by motorbike. You can rent a motorbike right at your hotel at the price of 150 Baht/day, very cheap, add more fuel, you can riding comfortably. If you buy a tour, usually the tour agents will pick you up at the hotel, and after the tour they also will take you your hotel.

audley travel krabi

When getting from Krabi airport if you buy bus tickets to go to the pier to get to Koh Phi Phi island, the bus will take you to Krabi Town first and drop you right at the transport company office, then the bus continues take the others to Ao Nang. You stay here for a while until before the ferry runs, they will have Songthaew to take you to the pier (free). Ferry tickets to Koh Phi Phi you can buy at the airport is also OK, price at 400 Baht/way and round-trip is 700 Baht but the return ferry trip will take you to the wharf in Krabi Town. If when you return from Phi Phi and you stay in Ao Nang, you should only buy one-way tickets for the departure trip, and for the return trip you can buy right on the island only 300 Baht/return-trip that go straight to Ao Nang. There are Songthaew or minibus at every pier, you can bargain freely, do not hear any people, they often say incorrectly.

audley travel krabi

To traveling between the islands in Krabi, you just go to the piers in Ao Nang, Krabi or islands in this area, if you travel between the remote islands, you will go by high speed boat (ferry), and the near islands, the bays then take the longtail boat. For longtail boat, you just buy a ticket of around 100 Baht/way to the nearby islands and bays. When return, you also take these longtail boats. Details of each island will be mentioned below.

Krabi travel blog: Where to stay in Krabi?

beach villa krabi thailand

Krabi has two main areas, Ao Nang and Krabi town (about 20km from each other). Ao Nang is more bustling in town (in the evening in the town, only has the night market is noticeable) but hotel room rates will be a bit more expensive, but actually wherever you stay, you have to rent a motorbike to getting around, because these areas are very wide, the beach is also long, so walking only around the area you are staying and can not going far. You do not have to hesitate because wherever you stay, there always will be shuttle transfer service of the travel agents pick up at your hotel.

In Krabi Town

You can choose stay at Hotel Sleep Whale Express ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) that is rated 9.0 scores on Booking.com with beautiful and very clean rooms, room rate is not too high, decorated in modern style with full amenities of the best hotel, prime location because it located only 200m from Krabi night market, 300m from Vogue shopping mall. There are coffee, tea, hot water, hairdryer and private bathroom. On the ground floor, there is a separate bar area serving cafe and restaurant. Alternatively you can choose many other rooms in Krabi Town on Booking.com or Agoda.com .

audley travel krabi

Ao Nang has a lot of hotel options that stretch all along the coast, but the best location is that you should choose hotel on the main road that runs perpendicular to the beach, where tourists often choose to swim and catch boat to getting to Railay beach. The Nine Hotel @ Ao Nang ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) with the room is quite nice, given a high score on Booking.com, only 5 minutes walk to the beach, clean private bathroom. Other hotels in Ao Nang you also can booking via on Booking.com or Agoda.com .

Stay on Phi Phi Island or Railay Beach

Railay Beach thailand guide

In addition to the two main areas above, tourists come to Krabi often choose to spend a few nights on Koh Phi Phi island or Railay beach. On Phi Phi island, the room rate is a bit higher than in Ao Nang, the hotels are located near the pier, so it is quite convenient. I stayed at the Marine House hostel ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) , the room rate is good on the island, like a stilt house, a beautiful clean wooden room, a 5-minute walk to the pier. And Railay beach is an isolated area you have to take a boat if you want to stay here, this area many visitors like because there is a beautiful beach to watch the sunset.

Krabi trip blog: What to eat in Krabi?

In Krabi Town in the evening you can go to the night market for eating and drinking, during the day there are also quite a lot of restaurants open with pretty good food right near the night market area near the lake. In general, the food in Krabi are similar to those in Bangkok, the most popular is still Pad Thai.

krabi food

If you stay in Ao Nang, you will have to ride a little far away if you want to have many options and cheap. In general, Western food, fast food such as Mc Donald, KFC, Burger King have a lot on the main street in Ao Nang, but traveling, after get boring with local food, then you should eat fast food. The streetfood stalls in Ao Nang you can find on the main street perpendicular to Ao Nang Beach (at the end of Ao Nang Beach, turn left), passing Mc Donald is a short distance is an area with quite a lot of restaurants on the right. Another area is near Wang Sai Seafood , a row with lots of good streetfood restaurants and good prices, but this area is mostly bustling at night.

Krabi travel blog: What to do?

Traveling to Krabi is still mainly going to the beach, taking island hopping tours or you will go to Koh Phi Phi island and taking tours there. Krabi or Ao Nang tours you can book in advance via the website of Klook or buy from your hotel. The most popular tour in Krabi that people often buy is the 4 Islands Tour, in addition to many other tours such as Hong Island, Koh Phi Phi Island, etc. Some tourist attraction in Krabi as below.

Krabi Town and around

Tiger Cave Temple: In Krabi Town during the day you can go to some tourist places such as Tiger Cave Temple about 30km from Krabi Town, to reach here you will have to climb the top of the mountain with 1300 steps to see a temple and a quite large Buddha statue that formerly was a cave with footprints of tiger, from the top of the mountain, you can see whole majestic and peaceful scenery of Krabi. Come here to watch the sunrise to see the beauty of Krabi mountains.

Tiger-cave-temple-in-Kanchanaburi,kanchanaburi travel blog,kanchanaburi day trip,kanchanaburi blog,kanchanaburi travel guide

Hot Springs and Emerald Pool: In addition you can visit the hot springs and blue pool, one of the specialties of Krabi, but to getting to Emerald hot spring and Tiger Cave Temple you will have to go quite far. In town there is also the longtail boat service on the Krabi River, the river is located at the edge of the town but also near the center.

audley travel krabi

Fossil Shell Beach: About 8km from Ao Nang beach, this beach has many ancient fossils, the entrance fee is 200B/person. Nearby there is a restaurant called 7HEAVEN ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) built as a fun playing and staying complex, quite nice, which is also suitable for watching sunset, but the food here is also quite expensive.

audley travel krabi

Krabi Town: In the daytime in Krabi town (the center of the town) is quite peaceful, before I go, I thought Krabi was just a small village, but when I came here, it was different, quite bustling, many shops, especially there are many nice hostels combine cafes. In the evening you can walking around the lake (which looks like a long but quite small and narrow river), duck pedal boat, explore the crowded and interesting night market. The roads in the town are as wide and as many vehicles as the medium-size cities, it’s gentle and quiet.

audley travel krabi

Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang is a large area with beaches stretching for many kilometers, restaurants, hotels or resorts are often concentrated here. You can imagine the beach in Ao Nang is similar to Mui Ne beach in Vietnam, but it seems more concentrating and Mui Ne is more spread.

Some main beaches in Ao Nang:

Ao Nang Beach: The main beach in Ao Nang, a gathering point of tourists and is the most bustling spot in Krabi. The beach is quite beautiful and there are many eateries, with a pier to take longtail boat to get to Railay beach.

audley travel krabi

Nopparat Thara beach: Located on the upper part of Ao Nang, a bit more peaceful and quiet than Ao Nang beach, in the afternoon when the tide recedes, you will see shallow white sand beaches and you can reach the very beautiful limestone mountains nearby. At this point, you will have to walk to the shallow beach, so you can leave your motorbike at the beach embankment without having to worry.

audley travel krabi

Railay Beach : This is a beach located in the South and isolated from Ao Nang. To getting here, you have to take a speedboat or longtail boat, the fare is about 100B/way and can be bargained, coming to Railay you can play, sun bathing, swimming and come back to Ao Nang at anytime because there are many longtail boats ready to take you to Ao Nang. This area is also known as Railay Village because here is actually a village in Krabi, with rocky mountains, caves, thrilling activities like climbing. The beach is more beautiful in Ao Nang and especially Railay is the only place to watch the sunset fully because the sun is not obscured, so that is why the Western backpackers love to come here to relax. In Railay, there are many sports such as skydiving, kayaking… For skydiving tours, you must be present before 9 am to start, the tour price is 1000 Baht including lunch. Near Railay beach, there is also Ton Sai beach which is also very beautiful, if you like you can take a boat to the beach to have fun.

audley travel krabi

Koh Phi Phi

The island is so famous and a highlight destination when traveling to Krabi, where the hotel price and all living costs are more expensive than in Krabi or Ao Nang. From Koh Phi Phi, you can buy tours to visit nearby beaches, islands such as Bamboo Island, Long beach, Monkey Island, etc. On the island, it is always bustling, vibrant, especially at night filled with bar, fire dance performance, pool party extremely fun. During the day you should try climbing the island’s highest mountain to reach the Viewpoint points to see the whole island. There are 3 Viewpoint points according to the higher level, the ticket for all 3 viewpoints is 30 Baht.

Tours in Krabi

In Thailand in general or in Krabi in particular, they are mainly strong on private tours, that is, you come to Krabi to play, visit the beaches in Ao Nang, in addition you have a multitude of tour options to explore the sea, islands in this land. It can be mentioned here as 4 Islands Tour , Hong Island Tour, Krabi Nature & Adventure Tour, …. All about the tours you can find on Klook . Phi Phi Island is the largest and most famous island in Krabi, you can buy a daytrip to explore Phi Phi or take a ferry and spend a few nights on the island.

Discover all tours and activities in Krabi here.

I just experienced the 4 Islands Tour, the tour pick up me from the hotel at 9am and returned at 3pm, generally they would take you to some islands near Krabi by Longtail boat, not much special things compare to the island tours in Vietnam like Binh Ba island tour or Cu Lao Cham island tour. These islands are very small, not so beautiful, you can snorkeling to watch corals, corals here are also quite beautiful, and the beach is normal (maybe because of I had been to the Maldives, so I see any island is ugly now, LOL!). Anyway, with the tour price of 600 Baht/person with pick up and drop off service and have fun for all day like that is too good already.

What’s a better way to start your trip in a new city than enjoying the panoramic view over the surrounding wilderness after an exhausting hike?

Everyone has their way of fighting the fatigue of flying. In my case, I always prefer hiking, which guarantees a good night’s sleep at the end of the day.

The hike to Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint is not a difficult one, but it does take some time – around 2-3 hours for a return trip.

And the next stop on our Krabi itinerary is on the way back from Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint, so plan for a long day out.

There are plenty of free motorcycle parking lots at the entrance in front of the luxurious resorts. Don’t ride past the gate, if not, you’ll be charged a parking fee for a distance of 5 minutes’ walk.

There is no entrance fee to this hike, but the ranger at the counter will repeatedly remind you to tip them before and after you do the hike.

The Surreal View Of Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint Over The Vast Rainforest In Krabi.

Like other hikes, there are steep and plain parts on the trail. For some steeper parts, they’ve built staircases to make your hike easier.

It’s all dirt trail on the hike, and wearing a sandal is no doubt a bad idea. The dense jungle blocks off any winds that could be cooling you off, so make sure you bring plenty of water to hydrate yourself!

When you’re approaching the peak, there are signboards pointing to a waterfall and a lake. You may want to avoid these as they are not all that attractive.

At the peak, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view at a few hundred meters above sea level. Just make sure you don’t stand on the dangerous cliffs barred off from visitors.

Never risk your life for a photo, just enjoy the view from the vantage point.

If you have the time, stop at Tubkaek Beach , located right just after leaving Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. This is a very quiet, long beach with amazing views on the limestone hills budding from the sea surface in distance.

The Krabi Shell Cemetery is located 17 kilometres from Krabi town centre, which makes a great detour on your way back from the Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. That’s if you’re staying in Krabi town.

The road leading to the entrance of Susan Hoi is intercepted at the main road connecting Ao Nang Beach and Krabi Town.

With the shell fossils dating back to 25-40 million years, it’s a great place for those who’re interested. But if you’re not into these things, you’ll probably want to pass on this attraction and head straight back into Krabi town.

The entrance fee to Susan Hoi is 200 Baht per entry.

On your way to the next point, don’t forget to grab some snacks or drinks from the Family Mart or 7-Eleven. They’re spread out across the town like mushrooms, you find them literally everywhere.

Wat Kaew Korawaram is absolutely the most elegant temple in Krabi. Located right inside Krabi town centre, the temple is easily accessible to visitors staying near the pier.

The staircases leading to the temple from the main road are decorated with naga sculptures, giving it a classic Thailand Buddhist temple appearance.

Upon reaching the temple, you’ll notice several dozens of information boards depicting the stories of Buddha – the birth of Buddha, how Buddha achieved enlightenment , and more.

The only downside is that some of the details and explanations are in the Thai language only.

While you’re there, take a moment and appreciate the architecture of the majestic temple. The entrance to Wat Kaew Korawaram is free of charge!

Wat Kaew Korawaram

Now we’re talking about one of the most popular beaches in Thailand – Ao Nang Beach. This well-trodden beach is often the spot to be for sunset views.

And despite the crowds, there’s no reason to miss Ao Nang on your Krabi itinerary.

On your way to Ao Nang Beach, you’ll pass by dozens of vibrant stores before reaching the parking lot.

While the beach is always filled during evening hours, it’s totally possible to find a spot for yourself on the massive stretch of beach.

Head into the bustling streets and alleys of Ao Nang when the sun goes down as this is when the nightlife begins.

Hundreds of restaurants serve cuisines from all around the world on the wide budget range. Need cheap eats? Head over to the night market.

Bars, pubs, and souvenir stores are spread throughout Ao Nang, so you’ll surely enjoy your night there!

Ao Nang Beach!

Day 2 – Island Hopping

After a fun night in Ao Nang, get ready for an epic day. Your second day in your Krabi itinerary will be an unforgettable one.

Today, we’re going island-hopping! You’ll get to see some gorgeous islands, and even pay a visit to the infamous Railay Beach.

Walking along the Krabi pier is a great way to start your day. Facing east, you could catch the sunrise from the mangrove forest on the opposite side.

The famous crab sculptures and several decorations were placed along the pier and every morning, it welcomes dozens of morning runners.

On your way back to your hotel, grab a sandwich from the Family Mart nearby or quickly stop at a cafe or restaurant of your choice in the area.

It’s going to be a busy day so load up on coffee and grab that bite to eat and let’s get started!

The Famous Crab Sculptures In Krabi.

A trip to Krabi wouldn’t be complete without an island-hopping tour. This very coast is surrounded by dozens of breathtaking uninhabited islands, crystal-clear waters and limestone hills.

It’s extremely easy to book a tour in Krabi. The easiest way would be booking with your accommodation manager, who usually has some discounts.

Most tours you will find will either be for 4 islands or 7 islands.

While I was staying in Baan To Guesthouse in Krabi, I went on the 7 Islands Sunset Tour for 900 Baht (discounted from 1,500 Baht).

There are also different tours like the 4 Islands Tour (which is more well-known to visitors), kayaking tours, rainforest discovery tour, and more.

There is honestly not much difference between the 7 Islands and 4 Islands tours.

BONUS –  Booking ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out on the tour, and get the best price too! And just for NOMADasaurus readers, if you use the Klook discount code  “NOMADS10”  on the website when checking out, you’ll get $10 off your first booking!

Both are going to provide you with a full-day tour. The 4 islands tours will allow you to spend more time on each island. But you get to see more on the 7 islands tour.

It’s all up to you whether you want to spend more time racing around between the different islands or relaxing on the beach!

For the 7 Islands Sunset Tour you can expect an itinerary similar to this:

The tuk-tuk will pick you up at 12 pm and bring you to Ao Nam Mao Pier. There, you will register yourself and collect the snorkelling mask.

Snorkeling With The Fish In Chicken Island.

You’ll then be directed onboard the longtail boat to start your day.

Throughout the day you will be visiting Tup Island, Thap Island, Chicken Island, Poda Island, Ma Tang Ming Island, Si Island, Phra Nang Beach, and Railay Beach (which technically isn’t an island).

You will get to walk between Tup Island and Thap Island , which is connected by the shallow beach on foot. You’ll also get to snorkel with the fish near Chicken Island , chill on Poda Island , visit Phra Nang Cave Beach and finally feast on a buffet dinner while watching the sunset in Railay Beach .

Railay Beach is one of Thailand’s most famous. Framed by limestone cliffs and dense jungle, Railay Beach is popular among rock climbers and photographers.

For some tours on your Krabi itinerary, you may also get to go night snorkelling to see the phytoplankton before heading back for the fire show at the pier at around 8 pm.

Sounds cool, right!? Book a 4-Island tour here!

An alternative option is booking a day tour to Koh Phi Phi . Koh Phi Phi is a great day trip, as it includes all the highlights like Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, and Maya Bay.

We would recommend spending a few days in Koh Phi Phi and taking your time seeing Maya Bay and the Koh Phi Phi town center.

But if you’re short on time and you’d rather visit Koh Phi Phi as a day trip from Krabi, you can do that. Any Krabi island hopping trip should include Koh Phi Phi for sure!

The View You Get From Tup Island, Surrounded By Nothing But Pristine Beaches And Crystal-Clear Seawater. Well, And Boats And Other Visitors, Of Course.

After returning back to the Krabi province after a busy day exploring the islands you will find the nightlife is starting to pick up.

Krabi is home to countless bars, swarmed by foreign visitors every night to spend the last few hours of the day. If you’re staying in Ao Nang Beach, then, of course, you should spend the night there.

I never visited all of the bars in Krabi Town, but there’s one particular bar that I highly recommend – Booze Bar . The staff are friendly and they have live music and lovely vibes, all you could ask for in a perfect bar.

Day 3 – Caves and the Emerald Pool

Most of the accommodations in Krabi do include breakfast in your stay, but if they don’t, they probably have a café to fill your morning tummy.

Today, we’re gonna rent a motorcycle to have fun around the outskirts of Krabi. If it’s not your thing, it’s pretty easy to get a tuk-tuk in Krabi to get to wherever you want!

You can also save a bunch of time by booking today’s activities as part of an all-inclusive tour ! Perfect if you’d rather not run the risk of riding a motorcycle without insurance or a license when you visit Krabi.

You might want to know that this is way more physically demanding compared to Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint.

I’m not trying to scare you. But trust me, you’ll be thanking yourself after reaching the top, enjoying the magnificent view of the temple sitting upon the ragged limestone hill.

At the base, there are several attractions like an artificial waterfall, cafeteria, and temples.

But the main attraction lies on the top connected by the 1,200-step staircases (Note: due to its physical demand this is not for all travellers.)

Visiting in the morning is a better idea as the weather is usually cooler and the sunlight isn’t as harsh as the scorching tropical sun in the afternoon.

It takes around 20-40 minutes to get to the temple on top.

If you’re worried about dehydration, bring a water bottle with you. But note that there is a water station at the temple on top to refill your bottle.

You’ll have to take off your shoes to visit around the temple, and you could easily spend 30 minutes up there on the view alone.

Also, be extra careful of the aggressive monkeys. Don’t touch them, and don’t go near a mom with babies. And definitely don’t feed them.

Limestone Views Krabi

Over the years, Emerald Pool has become one of the must-visits in Krabi for no other reasons than it’s simply wonderful. Minerals in the water make the colour absolutely spectacular!

Located inside Thung Teao Forest Natural Park , there are several hiking trails surrounding the emerald pool too. But for now, let’s go straight for the pool.

Due to the tourist crowds, it’s wiser to pay this attraction a visit in the morning. So, it’s all up to you if you want to interchange this with Tiger Cave Temple.

With an entrance fee of 200 Baht, you are allowed to soak yourself in the crystal pond for as long as you want. The entrance closes at 4.30 pm.

Next up, Klong Thom Hot Springs is located near Emerald Pool, so I highly recommend you arrange both of these attractions on the same day on your Krabi itinerary.

The hot spring itself is extremely small and difficult to accommodate the number of visitors daily.

So, the authorities have decided to build an artificial pool near the hot spring and drain part of the water there for more people to enjoy.

The artificial pool is located before the authentic hot spring. So, if you’re visiting in the non-peak hours you could possibly enjoy the hot springs surrounded by gigantic tree roots.

It’s advised that you shouldn’t soak yourself in the hot springs for more than 20 minutes at a time.

The entrance fee to Klong Thom Hot Springs is 160 Baht, plus 10 Baht for your motorbike parking.

Chao Fah Night Market is one of the most enjoyable night markets in all of Thailand. Hundreds of tables and chairs are arranged by the pier, fenced by dozens of hawker stalls.

You can go over all the menus of every stall, but you won’t notice much difference other than the design. Choose the one you like, and order whatever you want, and they’ll arrange a seat for you.

There are milkshake stalls there, which I recommend. (Krabi has much better milkshakes compared to Phi Phi Islands and Phuket, honestly.)

The highlights here are, of course, seafood, since Krabi is a coastal town. And they’re surprisingly affordable here too. You can get a big plate of clams for under 200 Baht!

You could also choose to attend the Blue Dragon Cabaret show , which is one of the more popular and most famous attractions in all of Thailand.

There are other Ladyboy shows throughout Thailand but this is worth a watch on the last of your 3 days in Krabi itinerary.

Krabi Thailand City Guide

Now that you have a pretty good idea about what you’re going to do with your 3 days in Krabi itinerary, let’s help you travel to and around Krabi and find the best accommodation and food!

The best time to visit Krabi and the rest of Southern Thailand is generally during the dry season, which spans from November to April.

During these months, Krabi experiences pleasant weather with clear skies, warm temperatures, and lower humidity. Travel guides would recommend these months for exploring the region’s renowned limestone cliffs, pristine beaches, and vibrant marine life.

While the peak tourist season occurs from December to February, offering optimal conditions for various outdoor activities like rock climbing, island hopping, and snorkeling, visitors can still enjoy nice weather in the shoulder months of November and April.

However, you should always check the local weather and be mindful of potential variations in weather patterns, as occasional brief rain showers can occur even during the dry season.

If Krabi is your first destination in Thailand, then there’s good news – there is an international airport in Krabi.

Inside the Krabi Airport, you’ll have to choose between taking the shared van or private transfer to your accommodation.

In my case, I took the shared van, which is surprisingly comfortable with leather seats and a well-air-conditioned interior.

It took around 30 minutes to reach our hostel, and yes, they drop you right at the doorstep. The price? Only 90 Baht!

In some cases where you’re travelling in Phuket first, then consider taking the shared van from the bus terminals to Krabi. There are two bus terminals in Phuket.

It takes 3 hours to reach Krabi by bus. The only downside is that the bus terminal is rather far from most accommodations.

You might need a cab to get to your hotel, or you could walk, which I did! The shared van costs 140 Baht.

What if you’re staying in Ao Nang? Well, it’s pretty similar.

From the airport, catch the shared van to Ao Nang, which costs slightly more at 110 Baht. From Phuket, just tell the receptionist that you’re going to Ao Nang. It’s pretty straightforward as Ao Nang and Krabi are so close.

For travellers, the most popular place to stay would be near the Chao Fah Park Pier. There are plenty of shops, marts, hostels, and hotels – and of course, night markets.

Since there are not that many attractions inside Krabi Town, renting a motorcycle is the easiest way to visit the nearest attractions like the Emerald Pool, Ao Nang, Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint, and more.

Renting a motorcycle when you visit Krabi is almost effortless and is reasonably priced at around 200-250 Baht per day.

This price excludes petrol, which is pretty cheap as well. Chances are, you can rent a motorcycle from your hotel or hostel.

If a motorcycle is not your thing, then your options would be either private cabs, tours or GrabCar.

Tours are pretty common when you visit Krabi due to its popularity among Chinese, Russian and Korean tourists. So booking a tour is trouble-free.

Baan To Guesthouse definitely has one of the most strategic locations for those who visit Krabi. Within a 5-minutes’ walk, you’ll get to Chao Fah Night Market, the pier, and plenty of amazing cafes and restaurants, like 89 Café .

I highly recommend this café, even though it’s a little pricey, the foods are top-notch and will never disappoint you.

They have one of the cheapest prices for double rooms in Krabi, and the on-site restaurant is perfect for breakfast. The host was extremely friendly as well, and we gladly rented her motorcycle for 250 Baht per day.

The rooms were basic, a little bit warm, so I suggest getting an air-conditioned room.

I hope you enjoyed reading this 3 days Krabi itinerary. Krabi Thailand is a wonderland for those who love nightlife. But it’s also perfect for those who enjoy travelling at a slower pace.

In short, Krabi Thailand has something for everyone. Three days in Krabi are enough for most people to take in the essential attractions.

But if you’re opting to stay longer, Krabi is a great spot to sit back and relax!
