Thank you for your interest in Uni High. Our 2024-25 application period has ended.

Please check back next fall for information about the 2025-26 admissions year and  feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions.

The typical point of entry for Uni High is 8th grade, but we accept students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades on a space-available basis.

University Laboratory High School (Uni High) is a public high school affiliated with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We enroll about 300 students in grades 8-12. Students are admitted via an application process and any student who is/will be a legal resident of Illinois by the first day of school can apply.

We are located on the University of Illinois campus at the corner of Springfield and Mathews in Urbana. As a public school, Uni does not charge tuition. We do have student fees (they were approximately $850 last year) and fee waivers, and students buy their own books. We are proud that no student will be unable to attend Uni because of limited financial resources.

- Most students enter in 8th grade, but there are a few transfer openings each year for grades 9-11. - There is no tuition and we have income-based fee-waivers for all fees. - We’re proud of our unique curriculum! - We have a small enrollment – about 310 students total in grades 8-12. - We offer students the freedom and independence of an open campus. - We offer unique, interesting, and challenging classes. - We offer many fine arts, sports, and club experiences.

We love to see applications from passionate, creative risk-takers who have done reasonably well in school. (Everyone makes mistakes.)

Current 6th and 7th graders can apply for next year’s 8th grade (subfreshman) class. Current 8th - 10th graders can also apply as transfer students for a limited number of openings. Uni students are motivated students who want to learn and are open to learning and exploring in many different ways. They will be able to handle the freedom and responsibility of an open campus, and they are flexible in their expectations of school. Our students are often looking for non-traditional approaches, more independence, a smaller environment, and a safe place to take risks. We offer extra help in math and writing for students who want it.

Uni ensures all students will receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Students with limitations and disabilities are encouraged to apply as we accommodate 504 Plans and work with home school districts with Individualized Education Plans.

No standardized test:  There is no required standardized test. Admissions decisions will be based on the application (which will be online), letters of recommendation, writing samples, and transcripts from last year and this year. The application:  The application link will be available in early January. Applicants will complete and submit the application online. The application is designed to be filled out primarily by the student. There is a parent statement to be completed by a parent or guardian, and students may need assistance getting recommendations and transcripts. Writing assessment:  The student questionnaire portion includes several short and long essay questions.

Fees:  There is a $35 application fee, and waivers are available. Please contact  [email protected]  if you need assistance with the application fee.

Uni always tries to build a class of incoming students that represents the surrounding communities. We do not consider home school districts, family relationships, or affiliation with the University of Illinois. The admissions process is name-blind (the committee NEVER sees the applicants’ names throughout the process).

There is no magic formula for admission. We look at the whole application. Requirements:  There is no “cut-off” GPA. You do not need straight As; less than perfect grades will not keep a student out of Uni. If you don’t participate in organized activities, that’s fine with us. If you do, that’s good too. If you’ve won awards - great. If you haven’t - that’s not a problem. A committee of teachers will look at your whole application and think carefully about your place at Uni High.  We can only accept about 65 8th-grade students each year. We typically have many more qualified students whom we would love to accept, but we just don’t have room. We try to invite students who are open to new experiences, are excited about learning, and who are flexible and likely to enjoy both traditional and non-traditional classes. Please remember: Admissions decisions are final. There is no appeal process.

Uni has a non-AP, all-honors curriculum. While we require a certain number of credits in traditional high school subjects, we also offer a changing array of electives. Classes range from traditional lecture- and test-based classes to completely hands-on active learning classes. As a laboratory school, our one constant is that things change.

Our teachers are experts in their fields and decide what they will teach. The curriculum can change from year to year based on research, experience, student feedback, and experimentation. Check out our curriculum  here , but keep in mind that it’s always changing. The graduation requirements are  here . In addition, some students may do independent study projects or take University of Illinois classes for college credit starting their Junior year. We do not teach AP classes or give AP exams at Uni.

We offer classes in French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. Uni students are required to complete two years of World Languages. Please click and read the details about how students are assigned to language classes. Due to our small enrollment and small class sizes, students are not guaranteed enrollment into their first choice language.

More information about our language program

Uni has a wide range of extracurriculars, athletics, and fine arts opportunities, and students can propose their own clubs at any time.

Fine arts:  Uni’s Fine Arts programs include visual arts, theater, chorus, orchestra, madrigals, and jazz band. About 70% of Uni students participate in the arts. Athletics:  All of our sports have a “no cut” policy, so anyone can participate in any sport, even if they have never tried it before. Find out more about athletics  here . Clubs:  Any student at Uni can propose a club to the Student Council at any time. As students graduate and new students begin, the variety of clubs changes. There are usually about  50 clubs   at any given time. We also have student government at every grade level and an elected Student-Faculty Advisory committee.

If you’d like to find out more about Uni, we recommend signing up for one of our prospective family meetings through our inquiry page .

Our prospective family meetings will be held both in person at local libraries and through Zoom. Zoom links will be emailed one day before the meeting.

The meetings feature a PowerPoint with additional information about opportunities at Uni as well as more information about the application process. Each meeting will have some time for questions and answers at the end and will last approximately one hour.

The primary entry point for University of Illinois Laboratory High School is 8th grade. Applicants for grades 9-11 are accepted on a space-available basis. We do not accept new students for 12th grade.

More information for transfer students

Applicants who have been homeschooled are welcome to apply to Uni. The general guidelines for 8th grade (subfreshman) and transfer (9-11) applications should all be followed; homeschooled applicants will complete the same application.

The University | Beautiful. Urban. Distinct.

We think our campus is inspiring, but don't just take our word for it! Continually recognized as one of the Most Beautiful College Campuses (Forbes), Cincinnati is an urban campus with green space to spare. We think you'll agree with the New York Times that the University of Cincinnati has the "most ambitious campus-design program in the country."

The true beauty of the campus extends beyond the built environment to our diverse academic settings, cutting edge laboratories, open green spaces, and winding pathways, all of which have been designed to both arouse intellectual curiosity and prompt a healthy social culture. People thrive on our campus because it is a place where they can learn, problem solve, collaborate with one another, or simply have meaningful and memorable college experiences.

The City | Big-city adventure, small-town charm.

In the city of Cincinnati, you'll never be bored! Whether you are looking for professional opportunities, creative inspiration, or simply a great place to make memories with friends, you are in for something special in Cincinnati. It is a city in the midst of an exciting urban revival and a place known for its love of the arts, passion for sports, and its seriously impressive local food.

As the center of culture and commerce for a region of more than two million people, the Queen City is an important hub of the Midwest. It's our source for professional opportunities, celebration, and culture. Our backyard is home to nine Fortune 500 companies and lays claim to one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems in the nation. Inhabitants of Cincinnati experience big-city amenities while enjoying a small-town friendliness and collaborative feel that is characteristic of the Midwest.

The Students | Making an impact.

The typical University of Cincinnati student is, in fact, not typical at all. That is what makes each and every student on campus so special. Our students push boundaries, challenge ideas, and make a way for themselves on campus and beyond.

The University of Cincinnati is made up of a large and diverse community where tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff come together each day to learn and live with one another. We have more than 44,000 undergraduate and graduate students across multiple campuses and our faculty and staff here empower them to challenge and change the world.

The Experience | Greatness lies beyond the classroom.

Experiencing Cincinnati means more than simply sitting in a classroom. This may be where you start, but the experience you have at the University of Cincinnati will propel you forward to whatever future you can imagine for yourself. Experiential learning drives us here at Cincinnati. From co-ops nearby to service learning overseas, we learn by doing and our students and faculty bring that real-world knowledge back onto campus where it informs our classrooms. It is part of our culture here and that experience is one our students keep with them and build upon forever.

‘Men, actions have consequences:’ University of Virginia expels fraternity for hazing

Meanwhile, in an unlisted YouTube video, in the account of the Pi Kappa Alpha Memorial Headquarters, Justin Buck, the organization’s executive vice president delivered a solemn message, ostensibly to the fraternity membership.

“Men, actions have consequences,” Buck said. “For the first time in its history, the Alpha chapter at the University of Virginia has had its charter suspended and revoked — the chapter was also expelled from the University of Virginia for a minimum of four years.”

Neither Buck, nor the university provided initial details about the hazing activity.

“The action was taken following the confirmed, abhorrent and detestable hazing activities by individuals,” said Buck.

In a statement, university deputy spokesperson Bethanie Glover said, “Pursuant to Adam’s Law, details regarding the chapter’s hazing behaviors will be posted on the University’s Hazing Misconduct Website , in the coming weeks.”

Adam’s Law, named in honor of Loudoun County student Adam Oakes who died in 2021 of alcohol poisoning following a fraternity party, became law in April 2022, after being signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

According to Glover, “The Policy, Accountability, and Critical Events unit in Student Affairs initiated disciplinary action against individual students for the alleged involvement in hazing.

Buck said the fraternity will continue to feel the effects of the wrongdoing.

“We will have a constant reminder of the embarrassment which these men have caused our fraternity,” Buck said, in the video. “That is why the fraternity fully supports the individual pursuit by the University against over 20 men, many of whom will be facing expulsion from the university.”

Buck said the fraternity will be pursuing civil litigation against its UVA-based chapter’s president, new member educator, the new member education team, and others who “were directly involved and responsible for violating the terms of their membership agreement, as well as for financial and reputational damages.”

The university said three other fraternities have been suspended — Kappa Sigma, Theta Chi and Sigma Alpha Mu, as investigations continue.

When StuVi I opened in fall 2000, the campus residence transformed BU. The 18-story building at 10 Buick Street provides apartment-style residences to 800 juniors and seniors. It was the first part of BU’s John Hancock Student Village (StuVi), which also includes Agganis Arena, the Fitness & Recreation Center (FitRec) (both opened in 2005), and another high-rise dorm, StuVi II, opened in 2009 at 33 Harry Agganis Way home to 960 students. StuVi II comprises two towers: the 26-floor north tower provides apartment-style residences for juniors and seniors. The 19-story south tower is home to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in suite-style settings. With their spectacular views of the Charles River and the Boston skyline and proximity to FitRec, Nickerson Field, Agganis Arena, the BU Shuttle, and nearby shops, StuVi I and II soon became BU’s most sought-after addresses.

In the video above, StuVi I resident Akwasi Antwi (CAS’25) and StuVi II denizen Yadira Cabrera (COM’24) take us on a tour of their respective apartments and the many amenities (music rooms, spacious study lounges, and more) that make each building special. Take a look and find out why so many Terriers proclaim “West Is Best.”

Life Goals and Their Changes Drive Success

New Study from University of Houston Indicates If You Can Dream It, You Can Be It

By Laurie Fickman — 713-743-8454

  • Health and Medicine

“Where is my life going?” “Who do I want to be?”

teen-goals-newsroom.jpg

As future-thinkers, adolescents spend significant time contemplating these types of questions about their life goals. A new study from the University of Houston shows that a s people grow from teenagers to young adults, they tend to change the importance they place on certain life goals, but one thing is certain: The existence of high prestige and education goals, as well as their positive development, can drive success.

“Adolescents who endorsed higher levels of prestige and education goals tended to have higher educational attainment, income, occupational creativity, occupational prestige and job complexity after 12 years,” reports Rodica Damian, associate professor of psychology in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology . The paper’s first author, Andreea Sutu, is a former graduate student of Damian’s. Also on the team are former UH assistant professor Kevin Hoff and Sif Einarsdóttir of the University of Iceland.

No prior studies have investigated associations between life goal development and educational or occupational outcomes.

rodica-damian-newsroom.jpg

Damian and colleagues found that goals fluctuate – some dreams and goals of youth fall away while some, related to family (like being close to your relatives), relationships (like having good friendships or a romantic partner) and community (like being involved in your neighborhood or helping others) stay strong. These goals might become even more significant as people get older.

“Life goals are expected to change over time and these changes are expected to have consequences for future life outcomes, including occupational outcomes,” said Damian. “By understanding how changes in life goals relate to educational and occupational outcomes (above and beyond adolescent levels), we show how changes within individuals may also predict desired educational and occupational attainment.”

The study examined how life goals developed with age and how adolescent levels of goals, and their development through young adulthood, related to educational attainment and occupational outcomes in young adulthood. The study used two nationally representative samples of Icelandic youth followed longitudinally across 12 years from late adolescence to young adulthood.

“ For educational attainment, the strongest effects were found for education goals. Both initial levels and slopes of education goals were positively associated with educational attainment in both samples,” said Damian. “This indicates that adolescents with higher education goals, and those who showed a more positive change pattern in education goals, had higher educational attainment in young adulthood.”

Education and prestige goals emerged as the most consistent predictors of later income and that changes in these goals across time were the most consistent predictors of later occupational prestige and complexity.

“Our work highlights the importance of better understanding sources of goal development in adolescence and young adulthood. Overall, our focus on life goal development, educational attainment and occupational outcomes informs theoretical and practical understanding about the importance of life goals for real-world outcomes,” said Damian.

Recognizing the critical need for broadband to bridge the digital divide

Gallardo

Purdue economic development expert explains how the technology is key to unlocking opportunity

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — For urban and rural communities, the digital divide is more than just the lack of access to high-speed internet — it’s a disconnect from economic and social ties as well as opportunities in a fast-changing society.

Roberto Gallardo, Purdue University’s vice president for engagement, has spent the past decade analyzing local and regional community economic development, including the use of technology. He notes that the U.S. government’s plans to invest $42.5 billion in the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program will help narrow this divide by ensuring a growing number of Americans can connect to fast internet, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.

“The federal program recognizes that in today’s interconnected world, high-speed internet access is not a luxury; it’s a necessity,” said Gallardo, who was named in October 2023 to lead the newly formed Purdue Broadband Team . “It is an essential component to workforce training and regional development, helping rural communities to thrive.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Purdue Center for Regional Development leads effort for Indiana’s Digital Equity Plan
  • Purdue launches broadband team, effort to increase high-speed internet access, adoption and use throughout Indiana
  • Purdue, IU to collaborate on analysis of Indiana’s $500 million economic development efforts

Gallardo, who also serves as director of the Purdue Center for Regional Development, has garnered the attention of top federal officials for his regional economic development expertise. The Federal Reserve Board in January announced Gallardo was selected to join its Community Advisory Council for a three-year term. The Federal Reserve plays a crucial role in managing the U.S. economy and financial system, aiming to promote stability, growth and prosperity.

“As a member of the CAC, I’ll be able to provide ground-level perspective, advice and recommendations to the Fed on relevant policy matters and emerging issues, such as broadband and rural economic development,” said Gallardo, who serves in a similar capacity for the regional Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago.

In 2016 Gallardo developed the Digital Divide Index, a dataset that provides a reliable way to measure the gap between the haves and have-nots of digital access and use. Gallardo said the tool is intended to serve policymakers as a pragmatic resource.

The index scores include both broadband availability/adoption and socioeconomic characteristics.

Gallardo said the Digital Divide Index has been requested more than 150 times since 2020 by government entities, nonprofits and institutions of higher education to help with planning as well as research.

Gallardo said the digital barrier goes beyond the lack of infrastructure. It also means communities, especially in rural areas, are disconnected from economic and social ties and opportunities in the 21st century.

“Those constraints can limit any community’s ability to overcome economic struggles. The disconnect is an underpinning to persistent poverty,” Gallardo said. “As a leading research university and land-grant institution, Purdue is well positioned to find more effective and equitable solutions for the ever-increasing digital society and economy.”

Research bandwidth

During Gallardo’s tenure at the helm, the Purdue Center for Regional Development has taken on multiple economic development projects for state and federal governments. Three current projects have a combined value in terms of more than $3 billion in potential maximum grants awarded. The PCRD’s job is to document the impact of these programs and tell stories from these government grant programs.

One such program is the state of Indiana’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative.

The PCRD and the Indiana University Public Policy Institute are collaborating on a four-year project to examine the economic and community impact of the first round of the $500 million READI grant program.

NSF Engines

At the federal level, the PCRD was awarded a one-year contract from the National Science Foundation to establish the framework and process to evaluate the impact of the NSF Regional Innovation Engines competition. The NSF Engines grant program is intended to stimulate innovation-driven economic growth in selected U.S. regions, with special attention to underperforming or disadvantaged regions. The 10 recipients have the potential to receive up to $160 million over the next decade.

Build Back Better

In addition to the NSF Engines project, the PCRD is part of a team evaluating the impact of the Biden administration’s $1 billion Build Back Better Regional Challenge, which aims to boost economic recovery from the pandemic and rebuild American communities, including those grappling with decades of disinvestment. The program is administered through the Economic Development Administration, an agency in the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Broadband’s role in a pandemic-changed world

Gallardo said after the COVID-19 pandemic struck, online activities — from e-learning to remote working — became crucial. Without adequate and reliable connectivity, Americans quickly learned the value and necessity of high-speed, reliable internet.

But even before the global health crisis, Gallardo said there was not only a digital divide, but also a lack of understanding of the value and necessity of broadband.

“There was a disconnect, a lack of awareness. But when COVID hit, it changed everything. It literally accelerated 10 years’ worth of awareness work, at the minimum,” Gallardo said.

The Purdue Broadband Team is part of Purdue President Mung Chiang’s “ABCD” plan to better serve the state through four initiatives: Airport for the Greater Lafayette region, Broadband for rural counties, a Hard-Tech Corridor for central Indiana and Purdue@DC, which brings unique capabilities to the nation’s capital.
