Meeting the gorillas in Rwanda, an island escape in Panama, climbing glaciers in Chile and much more. Check out 24 top ecotourism destinations to visit in 2024!

I asked 20 of the best travel bloggers out there for their #1 tip for the top ecotourism destinations to visit in 2024, and the best month to visit such destination. Wow, quite some wanderlusting going on here!  Ready to pack your bags?

MEETING THE GORILLAS IN RWANDA

Rwanda’s long dry season (June to September) is the most popular time to visit, but the shorter dry season (December to February) allows you to savor the country’s splendid ecotourism locations and offerings and avoid crowds. The #1 attraction here is the Mountain Gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, which were made famous by late primatologist Dian Fossey. There are 10 habituated gorilla families open to tourist visits, so trekking permits are limited to 80 per day. Being surrounded by mamas, babies, and massive Silverback gorillas is an experience you’ll never forget. But there are many other ecotourism attractions in Rwanda.

From the cultural immersion of Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (which employs hundreds of former poachers) and the stunning scenic vistas of Lake Kivu to tracking Chimpanzees and monkeys in Nyungwe Forest National Park and wildlife safaris in Akagera National Park, Rwanda has a ton of options for nature and wildlife lovers. “The land of a thousand hills” has come a long way since the 1994 genocide: the benefits of ecotourism include fueling political stabilization, dramatic infrastructure improvements, and impressive economic growth.

A WILD EXPERIENCE IN SABAH, MALAYSIA

Sandakan in Sabah – in the Malaysian part of Borneo – is one of the top eco tourism locations and home to one of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, Sukau Rainforest Lodge. This is where you can see how eco-lodges work for real – they make use of everything from rainwater, used cooking oil, to the electric engine for the motorboats – all without sacrificing any comfort for guests. In fact, they have also won 19th Malaysia Tourism Awards 2014/2015 for Best Hotel Services (3 Star & Below). Its location on the bank of Kinabatangan River (at 560km, the second longest river in Malaysia) means relatively easy access to the floras and faunas of Borneo, including the orangutans, Bornean pygmy elephants , proboscis monkeys and rare birds like the hornbills, in their own natural habitat. In fact, you might not have to go far to see a Bornean pygmy elephant as they have a trail inside the compound of the Lodge itself!

The Lodge is open all year round but the best times to visit are anytime between January and October, so if January is too short of a notice for you, you still have 9 months to plan for a trip of a lifetime.

NEW ZEALAND, ONE OF THE BEST ECOTOURISM DESTINATIONS

February is the best month to visit New Zealand as the weather is going to be warmest and the most settled of the year. New Zealand a.k.a 100% Pure New Zealand is a must visit for millions thanks to the beautiful nature around the activities. If you want an example of ecotourism activities you can do while here, a tour of Fiordland’s Milford Sound, kayaking in Abel Tasman National and Whale Watching in Kaikoura are three of the top highlights of the South Island.

Heading up to the North Island, watching the seals sunbathing by Cape Palliser is fun and you have to visit a kiwi at Zealandia or Kapiti Island. You’re obliged to hike Tongariro National Park a.k.a Mt. Doom and before I carry on too much I’ll finish off with seeing the natural wonders of Wai-O-Tapu. Check out this New Zealand North Island itinerary !

And if you like glamping, check out these 12 luxury treehouse cabins you can sleep in – one of them is in New Zealand!

COSTA RICA: ECOTOURISM AND ADVENTURE TRAVEL

When considering a destination for an eco-friendly vacation, Costa Rica is a must. Costa Rica is a rugged country known for its beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and biodiversity. About a quarter of Costa Rica is protected jungle, alive with wildlife including a variety of monkeys, exotic birds, and frogs. The country offers both cloud forest and rainforest, both interesting and breathtaking.

A deep respect for nature is evident wherever you travel. This respect is evident at hotels and resorts throughout the country, which offer sustainable ecotourism and are rated the ICT’s Certificate of Sustainable Tourism (CST) program. Many hotels and resorts serve organic food; landscape their grounds with lush tropical plants and flowers; and conserve and recycle their resources.Different types of ecotourism options include excursions to one of the country’s volcanos (including Poas and Arenal); daytime and nighttime nature hikes; whitewater rafting; tours of the country’s coffee region;visiting the white-faced Capuchin monkeys; birding; and visits to the thermal hot springs. For the best weather, visit between mid-December and April, Costa Rica’s dry season.

For a different kind of experience, you can also  volunteer  and help with the sea turtle conservation or volunteer with local coffee growers who practice sustainable farming.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, ECUADOR: EVERY TRAVELER’S DREAM DESTINATION

For us, the absolute best ecotourism destination is the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.  This group of islands is at the top of every traveler’s dream destination list.  Being both geologically unique and geographically remote, these islands have spawned voyages of discovery.  The islands of the Galapagos are so isolated the animals have evolved into whole new species, something Charles Darwin observed on his voyage.  Visitors can retrace his footsteps and check out the amazing wildlife.  One of the best places for ecotourism, the Galapagos archipelago is so unique and surreal that it was recognized as the very first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

ECOTOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN SUMATRA

Situated in the northern region of Sumatra, Indonesia, only a short 1-hour flight from Asia’s hub of Kuala Lumpur, lies one of the most bio-diverse places in the world – The Gunung Leuser National Park. Home to the second largest concentration of orangutan, as well as many other endangered species like the Sumatran tiger and rhinoceros, the Gunung Leuser National Park has become a sanctuary for these creatures, and the people of this region have become their guardians.

Locals practice responsible tourism that aims to protect the forest and its inhabitants. Many of the rainforest regions of Indonesia are destroyed by deforestation and although some are protected from logging under federal law, illegal logging practices still occur. Tourism acts as an alternative income for many people here who have moved away from illegal means of income. By visiting the region and participating in eco-tourism activities such as trekking, tree planting and water rafting you are supporting the guardians of the Gunung Leuser, and you have the chance to get up close with the beautiful orangutans that call this place home.

JAMAICA: SEXY BEACHES AND MUCH MORE

Jamaica is predominately known for its gorgeous turquoise blue water and white sand beaches, however very few people know that Jamaica is one of the top ecotourism destinations in the Caribbean. The amount of things you can do in Jamaica  that don’t cause harm to its ecosystem is endless! You can go bamboo rafting on the gorgeous Martha Brae River, hike the UNESCO World heritage site, Blue Mountains, relax on undeveloped beaches like Winnifred Beach, explore Jamaica’s largest wetland ecosystem at Black River, or discover Jamaica’s diverse plant and species at Cockpit County.

Jamaica is pretty much sexy all year around, however the best time to visit is in April. In April, Jamaica is not overcrowded with tourist, it barely rains, and you can still get the benefit of things costing less than in the high season! The island of no worries and ultimate relaxation is one ecotourism destination you don’t want to miss out on in 2017!

AN ISLAND ESCAPE AT BOCAS DEL TORO, PANAMA

Bordering Costa Rica, Bocas del Toro, on the northern tip of Panama is one of the top 10 ecotourism destinations in the world. Beautiful islands with gorgeous beaches, sailing, snorkeling and other outdoor pursuits are easy to arrange with many tour operators that offer island tours and other eco adventures. I stayed at the uber cool La Loma Jungle lodge which is an amazing chocolate plantation with wonderful wooden tree houses that exude a total sense of place and eco cool. The farm to table approach and exciting food selections were simply spectacular – worth the experience when visiting this area.

SORSOGON, PHILIPPINES: VOLCANOS AND GIANT WHALES

As a favorite “hangout” place of typhoons and other natural calamities, it is quite hard to predict exactly when is the best time to visit the Philippines specifically the Bicol Region. Safe to say though that April and May are the best months to pursue that Bicolandia trip – the official summer season of the country! Sorsogon is where are most ecotourism destinations found in the Bicol region. If you love mountains and courageous enough to climb an active volcano, there’s Mt. Bulusan. Just within the area is the Bulusan Volcano National Park, which is now becoming a favorite destination for foreign travelers due to the fact that’s an eco tourism park and to the number of activities that you can do! You can go kayaking, camping, trekking and even try to learn how to cook local cuisine.

Did you know that the Butanting (Giant Whalesharks) are found in Donsol? They are well taken good care of and an indie film shot ten years ago was the Philippines entry to the Oscars in 2008. Whale shark watching tours are available. Another one of the best eco tourist attractions in Sorsogon is the Buhatan River Cruise. You can also do waterfall hopping!

NICARAGUA: AN UP AND COMING DESTINATION

Nicaragua is an up and coming destination that has been on travelers’ radars for a few years now. It’s even better than more popular ecotourism destinations such as Costa Rica and Panama, as it’s less crowded, rather undiscovered and it’s still much cheaper to travel within this pristine country. One of the best places to take advantage of sustainable activities is in Ometepe, which at first glance can seem too popular. There’s a long list of ecotourism activities available here; grab a kayak and float through the isthmus where you’ll see tons of animals, bugs, and flowers without ever crossing a soul.

Many initiatives are being put into place to make sure the wildlife is protected and I was quite impressed by Nicaragua’s green philosophy, availability of recycling bins, eco-responsible initiatives and the people’s desire to keep their country safe. Although Nicaragua can be enjoyed all year round thanks to changing temperatures in each part of the land, May is a great month to come, as it’s right between the dry and the wet season. You’ll get to see the greenery awakening without the more negative side of having endless rainfalls.

RAJA AMPAT, INDONESIA: A PRISTINE DESTINATION

Raja Ampat is an archipelago of islands, located just off the tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula in Indonesia’s West Papua province. It is an unmissable ecotourism destination as it is pristine, because it is difficult to get to, but entirely worth the effort. The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International claim that 75% of the world’s marine species live here in the islands. Raja Ampat is one of the most beautiful destinations in Indonesia and one of the greatest ecotourism places in the world. It is very popular with divers and has a lot to offer any traveler wanting to see somewhere that is off the tourist track. Any time of the year is good to visit as the climate is equitable, and while there might be some rain in June, it is short-lived.

NO NEED TO GO FAR AWAY: THE UNITED STATES

Ecotourism destinations in the United States are plenty all over the country. Not many people realize indeed that the US is one of the top ecotourism destinations in the world! June is a great month to discover the National Parks or to go on a road trip through the wild spaces of America. It’s not too cold and not too hot, and the most famous places aren’t overcrowded with tourists yet. For a special experience, why don’t you try glamping? It’s a great way to get in touch with nature with all the comforts of a luxury hotel.

ICELAND: INSPIRING SCENERY AT EVERY TURN

Iceland is one of the top ecotourism countries in the world, and visiting during July means taking advantage of the midnight sun. With 24 hours of daylight, you can truly make the absolutely most of each and every day!

In terms of ecotourism options, exploring Iceland’s landscapes is the main attraction here. It is one of the last untouched destinations left on earth, and the scenery will take your breath away. Between waterfalls, glaciers, dramatic fjords, volcanoes, cracked lava fields, gushing geysers and geothermal lagoons, Iceland is a country defined by its outdoors, and there is inspiring scenery at every turn. There is naturally a lot of opportunities here for adventure, and you can try your hand at anything from white water rafting, to horse riding, caving, quad bikes, or strapping on crampons and climbing a glacier if that takes your interest.

FINLAND, WHERE ALL TOURISM IS ECOTOURISM

In Finland, ecotourism isn’t really a thing. That is because all tourism is ecotourism – respect for nature and the environment has been part of people’s minds for decades. Most of my Finnish friends take solace in nature when daily life gets too much – as a result, there’s wonderful nature on every city’s doorstep and plenty of national parks all over the country. The best month to enjoy nature is July, when days are at their longest, the weather is warm and there’s plenty of sun, but winter also has its magic. A wonderful place to enjoy Finnish nature without having to travel too far from the city are the Helsinki islands , there are over 300 to choose from!

ECUADOR, WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE

Ecuador, one of the smaller yet most diverse countries in South America. The country, located by the Pacific ocean and straddling the equator, boasts a wide range of eco-systems and possibilities for visitors to learn about the environment while at the same time becoming more aware of their impact on it. There are several inspiring ecotourism projects in the country. I have been able to visit Kichwa Ecolodge in Yasuní National Park, the park which is considered to be housing more diversity in flora and fauna than anywhere else on the planet. This is an extremely rewarding experience, as you combine ecotourism and community-based tourism.

Some additional ecotourism options include, but are not limited to, visits to rainforests such as  Casa Divina Lodge in Mindo and visits to some indigenous tribes like with Napo Wildlife Center in Yasuni National Park. Many eco travel companies have had the Smart Voyager sustainable tourism certification for over 10 years. I was lucky enough to work with Metropolitan Touring, a company that is leading the way in the sustainability work. Metropolitan Touring owns and runs Finch Bay Hotel and the yachts La Pinta and Isabela II, all having the Smart Voyager certification and offering wonderful experiences in the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. Because of its location, Ecuador can be visited all year round. I invite you to discover a mega-diverse country perfect for ecotourism.

SINGAPORE: A GREEN CITY ESCAPE

Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay has become one of the most talked about man-made garden in the whole of Asia. These 101-hectare gardens consist of the stunning man-made ‘SuperTrees” that not only light up beautifully at night but serve as water catchment points when it rains. Some have equated this garden as ‘Ávatar in real form”, due to the surreal mystical design of the Supertrees and the quirky artsy design of the park with its exotic sculptures and plants. This tourist spot is very popular all year round and hosts tons of concerts and festive activities, but the month of August is a good month, as it is the month Singapore celebrates its independence, so you might just catch some fireworks in the nearby vicinity.

GALICIA, SPAIN: AN OFF THE BEATEN PATH ECO DESTINATION

September is a great month to explore the North West region of Spain. The crowds (that are never too large there, thank god!) are gone and the weather is still awesome due to its location by the Atlantic Ocean and Cantabric Sea. Nice temperatures and lower prices will welcome you in Galicia. But why did I pick this region? Well, Galicia is home. The place where I was born and bred and the one I return to in between my travels around the world. And believe me, I would have definitely changed that should it was not a dream destination.

Lacking the big hotels and tourism complexes other areas in Spain are filled with, the development of tourism is still at a good pace in Galicia. People have finally understood sustainable ecotourism is the way to go and all the efforts entrepreneurs are making go towards an environmentally friendly tourism. The best example is St. James Way, a pilgrimage that comes from the Middle Ages that has been bringing hiking enthusiasts to Galicia ever since. Slow tourism, locally produced food, Galician managed initiatives and a great natural environment make the rest. It’s not a case that a road trip around Galicia is one of the best road trips in Spain ! But hey, it is not just me the one who thinks Galicia is a place that should be topping this list of top ecotourism destinations for 2017. Read what other Galician bloggers have to say about Galicia and its hidden jewels here .

MAI CHAU, VIETNAM: AN ENCHANTING VALLEY

Last year I spent an entire month in Vietnam, visiting the whole country from south to north. It wasn’t always easy, but Vietnam is a beautiful country that will reward you with some breathtaking landscapes. One of my favorites ecotourism spots in Vietnam is Mai Chau, a village located 130 km north of Hanoi. This is an enchanting valley made of paddy fields and lush green hills, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. And if this wasn’t enough, there’s a reason more to visit Mai Chau. Mai Chau Ecolodge must be the most beautiful ecolodge I’ve ever seen, no kidding. It’s so beautiful it doesn’t even seem real.

September is a great month to visit northern Vietnam; the weather will be nice and cooler than in the middle of the summer. It’s the perfect time for some hiking or biking around Mai Chau and the surrounding valleys.

When in Vietnam, make sure to visit the charming city of Hoi An, it was my other favorite destination: here it’s a full list of the best 15 things to do in Hoi An .

PORTUGAL: A DESTINATION FOR ANYONE

Even if Portugal is good to visit any time of the year, October is one of the best months to do so. Reason number one: almost no tourists! Besides that, the weather in Portugal in early autumn is just perfect for longer hikes as the temperature is very moderate. Let’s not forget that Portugal is famous for its 300 sunny days per year, so odds of getting cloudy or rainy days on your vacation here are pretty low. If you visit Portugal at the very beginning of the month, pack your swimwear, too. The sea and small lakes will be warm enough for a nice dip.

Make sure you also visit Lisbon , it’s a beautiful city that will charm you with its narrow alleys and azulejos.

MAGICAL ENCOUNTERS IN APO ISLAND, PHILIPPINES

Swimming with turtles in Apo Island was one of the best travel experiences in my life, and the highlight of my recent trip to the Philippines. Apo Island is a magical island, one of the top eco tourism places in the country for sure. The coolest thing is, you don’t need to scuba dive in order to meet these magical creatures. Snorkelers will be able to swim and meet the turtles just a few meters away from the shore.

Stay At Atmosphere Resorts, one of the best eco-luxury resorts in the Philippines. The hotel takes great care in protecting the environment and giving back to the local communities, leading the way in the country. Atmosphere Resorts is located in Dauin, Negros Oriental, and organizes day trips to Apo Island several days a week. Apo Island is just 30 minutes away by boat: this is the best and easiest way to get to the island and live one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

DESERT ADVENTURES IN JORDAN

Jordan in November is an excellent month to visit as the scorching summer sun has turned into pleasant fall weather. Jordan’s varied landscapes from pine forest’s in its nature reserves, to desert landscapes in Wadi Rum leave something for everyone. While Petra, the Dead Sea and Jordan’s Roman ruins may be the countries popular draws, it features several ecotourism sites. Fenyan Eco-Lodge should not be missed for the eco-adventurer. Completely solar powered and featuring candle-lit rooms, guests are treated to an amazing meal and spend the evening gazing up at the stars. Fenyan Eco-Lodge is accessible by hiking 16 km through the Dana Biosphere Reserve or by vehicle. Jordan is a top leader in ecotourism in the world and offers programs that benefit the local community and helps to preserve its natural wonders.

ST. JOHN, USVI: ECOTOURISM IN THE CARIBBEAN

When I see the term “ECOTOURISM”, my mind is immediately transported to St. John, USVI. 3/5 of the Caribbean island is protected from development (preserved as a National Park) and St. John is the site of the first eco-resort in the world (Maho Bay). Other eco-resorts are now found on St. John and the island remains dedicated to protecting the surrounding reefs and water.

In addition to being a pioneer of ecotourism around the world, St. John is committed to non-commercial tourism; the island has no high rise building, no airport (you must arrive by water), and no large cruise dock. St. John does not have the hustle and bustle of nearby St. Thomas and that is exactly the way the residents, visitors, and I love it. Although St. John can be visited any month of the year, November is ideal because hurricane season is over (although hurricanes usually skip St. John anyway), humidity has decreased, and the island is entering holiday fever phase.

CHILE, NOT JUST FOR MOUNTAIN LOVERS

December is summer in Chile , a perfect time for those in the northern hemisphere to head south. Chile can be divided into four different ecotourism areas: North and the Atacama Desert, Santiago and the Central Valleys, Lakes and Volcanoes district and Patagonia. In the north, the bohemian San Pedro de Atacama is a perfect jump off point to explore the geysers, salt flats, flamingoes and volcanos of the region. Near Santiago, wine tasting, skiing, and hiking in the Andes are on tap. Heading to the lake district, there are plenty of areas to get off the beaten path including Pucon, the world heritage site of Chiloe, and the azure waters of Chile Chico.

Finally, and probably most famously, is the Chilean Patagonia. Here, you can undertake numerous ecotourism trips including cruises on iceberg busting vessels, galloping through the pampas on horseback or hiking in the Torres del Paine National Park (TDP). In particular, the W-Trek in TDP is an awe-inspiring hike with gorgeous views and accommodation from camping to 5-star luxury ecotourism options. Being one of the best countries for ecotourism in South America, Chile most certainly has something for you.

AUROVILLE, INDIA, AN EXPERIMENTAL TOWNSHIP

Image via Flickr by devaiah pa

Not one of the most-known eco tourist destinations, Auroville is however an experimental, very interesting township near Puducherry in Tamil Nadu, India. Popularly known as the City of Dawn, it was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (known as ‘the Mother’) and designed by architect Roger Anger. The ideology behind the creation of Auroville was ‘a universal town where men and women from all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all politics and all nationalities.’ Aurovillians run a huge variety of projects ranging from schools and IT to organic farming, renewable energy, and handicraft production employing nearly 4000-5000 villagers from nearby villages.

It is one of the destinations promoting ecotourism projects like no other in India. The economy is self-sustained and there are a variety of volunteering programs in alternative healthcare, ecological practices, building maintenance, renewable energy, etc which keep on happening in the township. The best time to visit Auroville is in December because of the comfortable weather and to get the chance to welcome the New Year with global citizens united by the common thought of ‘human unity’.

Great article, the information in this article is really very useful

Thursday 1st of March 2018

Seems like this post is using a pretty broad definition of ecotourism. I mean, a city park in Singapore is ecotourism? Some resort islands in Panama? (And why is Portugal on this list?)

The term ecotourism is originally used to refer to wilderness experiences that support conservation efforts and sustainable development. It doesn't really mean 'countries with nature in it'. Though this list did point me to a few interesting things.

Tuesday 27th of March 2018

Hello Mark, sorry for the late reply. It is, you are right. This post was made by asking to 24 people what it was the ecotourism destination they had visited and that they prefered, and each person has a different view of what ecotourism means. For some people it might be a green area in a urban city (Singapore is actually very sustainable!), for otehrs it might be a destination where they hiked in the mountains.

Ecotourism examples around the world: the 10 best places to visit and adventure

The word ‘ecotourism’ is thrown around a lot more these days. But what is ecotourism? Why is it important? And where can you find these ecotourism destinations?

eco-tourism-examples

What is ecotourism?

Over the upcoming years, you’re probably going to hear about ecotourism more and more. Not sure what it actually means? Let’s clear that up! The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as:  ‘Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.’

Put simply, it's about travelling to destinations where we make a positive long-term impact on the environment and the local communities.

These ecotourism places tend to not be the typical tourist hotspots. Mass tourism is the opposite of what we’re getting at here. Ecotourism is usually on a small scale , so that the negative impacts of travel are minimised as much as possible.

Why is ecotourism important?

Travelling is great! We all love to hop on a plane, explore new cultures and discover hidden gems. But all of these things are contributing to the destruction of our planet. Completely stopping travel isn’t a solution, but we can actively choose to reduce the impact that our travel has on the planet.

Ecotourism is important because it promotes this awareness . It encourages people to learn about and conserve our diverse landscapes, wildlife and cultures .

Hopefully we’ve convinced you that ecotourism is the way forward. If so, here are some of the best ecotourism destinations to visit.

Top 10 ecotourism examples

eco park tourist places

Costa Rica is one of the most well-known examples of ecotourism . It’s a tropical destination boasting rainforests, cloud forests, countless beaches, volcanoes and mountains . Nature and the ‘pura vida’ lifestyle, meaning pure life, are truly at the heart of Costa Rica.

Evidenced by the fact that over 25% of the country is made up of national parks , wildlife reserves and protected lands.

Corcovado National Park is almost the epitome of ecotourism. Being one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, Costa Rica is keen to protect it. To do this, they’ve limited the daily number of visitors and you must have a guide to visit.

You can also get involved in ecotourism in Costa Rica by volunteering! You can learn about a sustainable and eco-friendly way of life on this ecological farm.

eco park tourist places

Iceland is a dream destination for so many of us. That’s a good and a bad thing for Iceland. With the number of tourists increasing each year, they’ve seriously had to consider how to keep tourism sustainable and responsible.

But it’s also up to us as the traveller. Instead of staying in big hotels, opt for one of the many eco-friendly accommodation options. Doing a tour? Choose one where you’ll be travelling by bike, horse or hiking.

Iceland has an abundance of geothermal energy, which is used to heat water in houses and hotels. It can also be harnessed to create natural spas like the Blue Lagoon.

eco park tourist places

You might have never heard of Palau before, but this little island in the Pacific Ocean is revolutionising ecotourism .

If you visit Palau responsibly and sustainably, you’ll be rewarded. Palau has introduced an app-based rewards system where you earn points every time you help to preserve its fragile ecosystem.

Some of these things include signing the Palau Pledge upon arrival, wearing reef-safe suncream, eating sustainably-sourced local food and learning about Palau’s culture.

Every time you tick something off the list, you’ll get closer to unlocking an exclusive activity such as diving. Ultimately the main reward is knowing that you’re truly caring and helping a culturally-rich and magnificent place on earth.

Galapagos Islands

eco park tourist places

The Galapagos have played a vital role in educating the world about our world, inspiring Charles Darwin to come up with the Theory of Evolution . This research and education is still an integral part of the Galapagos Islands today.

These islands off the coast of Ecuador are invaluable, so steps have been taken to protect it. These include a $100 conservation fee, limiting the number of visitors and planning boat routes so there aren’t too many people in one place.

Fun fact: The Galapagos Islands were the first place added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Galapagos Islands are truly magical and probably somewhere you’ll want to spend longer in. If that’s the case, consider teaching for a non-profit organisation to extend your time and help the community. Find other ecotourism job opportunities .

eco park tourist places

Kenya is arguably one of the best ecotourism examples in Africa . The government even created an organisation called ‘Ecotourism Kenya’.

Their work involves promoting sustainable tourism that will conserve Kenya’s natural environment and improve the livelihoods of local communities .

Being home to 54 national parks,  over 1 million tourists every year visit Kenya in the hopes of catching a glimpse of ‘The Big 5’. This has encouraged the government to stop illegal poaching, ban single-use plastics and plastic bags whilst promoting sustainable tourism .

What better way to learn about a place than fully immersing yourself by volunteering? There are over 150 volunteering opportunities on Worldpackers in Kenya, including farming , social media help for an NGO and providing social work .

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most incredible places in the world. If you have the chance to visit, do it, and do it sustainably!

Luckily there are plenty of countries that you can visit the Amazon from - Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

However, the survival of the Amazon and its indigenous groups largely depends on the success of ecotourism. In 2021, the Amazon saw the highest rates of deforestation yet. Despite increasing awareness of climate change, deforestation isn’t decreasing.

Ecotourism is needed to educate people around the world on the global importance of the largest rainforest in the world. The income from tourism is also vital for the survival of indigenous people and conservation projects.

There’s nothing like disconnecting from the world and surrounding yourself in nature. Volunteering in the Amazon is the perfect way to do this, whilst contributing to its conservation. Check out these awesome opportunities in the Amazon in Peru and Ecuador .

Bhutan is one of the best ecotourism examples in the world, albeit an expensive one!

Since 1991, Bhutan has been charging visitors a daily Sustainable Development Fee. Originally $65/day, it has now jumped to $200/day in 2022 . Whilst this seems like a lot of money, the extraordinary outcomes prove that it’s worth it.

The money is used on projects such as offsetting Bhutan’s carbon footprint from tourism, supporting community education, organic farming and upskilling workers in the tourism industry .

It has led to Bhutan being the first carbon-negative country in 2017 . The country takes in more carbon dioxide than it produces!

Slovenia needs to receive more recognition for its efforts in ecotourism. 60% of the country is covered in forest and 54% of its land is protected . Tourists flock to Slovenia to see its natural beauty, whether it’s to hike one of its spectacular mountains, or to row across Lake Bled.

They’ve also made it easier for you to choose sustainable options. If an accommodation or tourism service has a Slovenia Green Label , you know that you’re helping to preserve local traditions and protect the environment .

Green camping or glamping in Slovenia is also a great way to get close to nature and support conservation efforts.

In 2020, Chile was named the World’s Leading Nature Destination . It’s not a surprise, as it is home to 41 National Parks, 45 Reserves and 17 Natural Monuments.

A large part of Chile's conservation efforts is down to the founder of the clothing brand North Face and his wife. They purchased land and then donated it back, which has led to the creation/expansion of 15 national parks, 2 marine national parks, and over 44 million acres of land and sea being protected.

Some great ecotourism destinations to visit in Chile include Huilo Huilo, one of Chile’s most popular waterfalls; and Chiloé Island, where the local community is working hard to build sustainable tourism.

There are over 100 Worldpackers volunteering opportunities in Chile . It’s a great way to practise your Spanish, learn about the culture and help a community.

Norway is one of the most breath-taking places on earth. It’s home to picturesque fjords, glacier lakes, snow-capped mountains and endless beaches . It's an ecotourism haven.

And the Norwegian government wants to keep it that way. They’ve done a great job at preserving their coastline by regulating hunting, fishing and oil companies .

Many activities in Norway have ecotourism at the heart of them. There are plenty of ways to immerse yourself in nature, whether it be river rafting , caving , dog sledding or hiking .

Norway can be an expensive place to visit, so why not exchange your skills volunteering in return for free accommodation?

How can you travel more responsibly?

Everyone has a part to play in ecotourism. It’s up to the governments of countries to promote and fund it, but it’s also up to us to actively make responsible choices .

Here are some things you can consider when booking your next trip:

  • Visit places where less tourists go
  • Stay at local and eco-friendly accommodations. Green Key  is a great website to find these
  • Eat local with local ingredients
  • Respect the environment - stay on paths, don’t leave rubbish, avoid touching wildlife
  • Opt for walking, cycling or public transport instead

The Best Destinations for Ecotourism in the US

Footbridge across Merced River, on The Mist Trail, Yosemite National Park, California

Now more than ever, travelers are aware of their environmental impact and the measures they can take to reduce it. That’s why ecotourism, wherever we choose to go, can and should be central to our travel plans. If you’re looking for the most sustainable places to visit in the United States , here’s our pick.

Ecotourism provides a means of accessing the world’s most remarkable places without destroying what makes them so special in the first place. By way of conservation, alternative energy, sustainable practices, awareness and environmentally sound methods, you’re now free to take that vacation with a clear conscience.

Alaska has been leading the way when it comes to environmentalism, and with more than 100 national and state parks, plus dozens of threatened or endangered species in the state, this comes as no surprise. Ecolodges, which run solely on alternative power sources, have emerged throughout, and many ecotourism operators offer ecotours and adventures to explore the vast tundra, colossal glaciers, soaring mountains and pristine wilderness of the majestic landscape. Big, remote and wild – Alaska calls to naturalists.

Denali National Park and Preserve is one of many protected spaces in Alaska

Hawaii has been practicing sustainability for millennia. So, for residents and Natives who hold fast to the notion of malama ‘aina (to care for the land), staying green comes easy. A long-time member of the International Ecotourism Society, Hawaii offers more than just ecofriendly beach activities, such as surfing , snorkeling , kayaking and scuba diving . You can also learn about ancient sustainability methods at Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, hike to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park or learn about Hawaiian culture at a hula festival. Ecolodges are aplenty, but if you’re looking for a hotel that satisfies all of your travel needs, check out Culture Trip’s curated selection .

Go kayaking on the Wailua River in Kauai, Hawaii

Green travel is as much a part of the Californian culture as açai bowls and staying fit. The western state, which already has hundreds of thousands of green jobs, has shifted the tourism landscape. For example, about 95 percent of Yosemite National Park is protected from urban activity, while efforts to decrease emissions for the other 5 percent include hybrid shuttle buses and green concessions. Meanwhile, in Palm Springs, you can go on eco-friendly excursions to the San Andreas Fault , Indian Canyons and Joshua Tree National Park.

It’s easy to make your stay in California eco-friendly, especially with sustainability-focused hotels like those we’ve curated here .

When in California, take an eco-friendly tour of Joshua Tree National Park

The Pacific Northwest has always been a pioneer in the green movement. Surrounded by miles of natural beauty, there is plenty to explore by foot, and with efforts to support its growing cycling population, Oregon has made way for tons of trails and bike routes – so there’s no need to start that engine. Amity Vineyards, a sustainable vineyard since 1991, produces three “eco-wines” that are both organic and sulphite-free. Portland offers ecotours of its surrounding area and is also home to Hopworks Urban Brewery, an eco-pub that operates under the motto of reduce, reuse and recycle.

For somewhere to stay, we’ve handpicked the state’s best boutique hotels – many with a firm focus on sustainability.

Oregon is home to several eco-friendly wineries

While it’s home to wildly diverse terrain, including Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, Montana has been targeted for natural gas drilling in recent years. However, in places such as Missoula, Whitefish and Bozeman, efforts have been made to bring the region back on the eco-track. Hotel Terra Jackson Hole , the first LEED-certified hotel in the state, uses water conservation systems, alternative energy and 100 percent organic towels, mats and bathrobes. And the Grand Teton Lodge Company, which owns several luxury ecolodges across Montana, purchased wind credits to conserve energy and diverts half of its waste by reusing and recycling.

If you’d like to keep your carbon footprint down while touring the Treasure State, you’ll find a wonderful range of eco-friendly cabins and cottages in its most beautiful towns .

Pack your hiking gear to explore Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana

Traveling in Colorado as an ecotourist is hardly a challenge. In a region where diverse landscapes are ubiquitous, residents are understandably keen to preserve the state’s natural beauty. Many Colorado attractions and lodgings are dedicated to the LEED Certification Program, with the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver being the first gold-certified museum in the nation. Element Denver Park Meadows has implemented energy conservation and recycling practices, while local tourism companies offer eco-friendly adventure activities – whether that means rafting through river canyons or exploring Rocky Mountain National Park .

For more great accommodation options in the state, browse our selection of the best hotels in Colorado for every traveler .

The Colorado River is an excellent place to go rafting

At Mount Rainier National Park, ecotourism is king. Stay at Adrift Hotel , a certified Social Purpose Corporation on the Washington Coast, for an eco-first approach to boutique hospitality. Hiking , rock climbing and kayaking are popular eco-activities, while a visit to Seattle offers visitors the chance to sample sustainably sourced produce, such as seafood, coffee and beer. There are some fantastic places to stay in the Emerald City – we’ve rounded up the best boutique hotels and the best pet-friendly hotels in case you can’t bear to leave your best four-legged friend at home.

Mount Rainier National Park is a top ecotourism site popular with adventurers

26 Amazing Ecotourism Destinations to Visit

Sustainable travel and ecotourism destinations

Last Updated on: Jul 16, 2023

Whether you want to sail to see the proboscis monkeys of Borneo, spend time volunteering in the universal city of Auroville or stay amidst the Canadian Rockies, you have to keep in mind about sustainable travel options. This blog has 26 great ecotourism destinations across the world that you might consider visiting.

With more and more people travelling and overtourism being the order of the day, we as travellers need to look for ways and means to protect and preserve the world we live in. Although travelling and eco-friendliness do not often go hand in hand, somewhere the stakeholders have to find a balance. This is where ecotourism comes in, which is mainly directed to support the conserve the ecology and the wildlife.  And no tourism can be sustainable without the involvement of the locals.

I had asked a few travel bloggers about their favourite ecotourism destinations to visit. Here is what they recommended. The places wait once the world is again ready to wanderlust!

Ecotourism destinations around the world

Ecotourism Destinations in Asia

Sabah, malaysia.

Tunku Abdul Rahaman Marine Park at Sabah

Sabah is one of the best ecotourism destinations of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Borneo itself is one of the eco-diversity hotspots and in Sabah, you will find one of the oldest rainforests in the world. I was amazed to know that they are almost 140 million years old . With a vast area of rainforest, Sabah is the home of some endemic species that are not found anywhere else, an abundance of marine life and some of the best nature experiences that you can probably have.

There are as many as 6 national parks in the small state of Sabah – Mt. Kinabalu, Crocker Range and Tawau Hills and 3 marine parks (Turtle Island, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Pulau Tiga). Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park comprises of 5 islands and is one of the most beautiful ecotourism destinations of Sabah.

You can visit the Mari Mari Cultural Village, where the houses, costumes and traditions of the 5 ethnic groups of Sabah are on display. Borneo’s Proboscis monkeys are one of the greatest attractions of the region and you can take a river cruise at Kilas River to see them. Visit the Sepilok Orangutang Centre, which is a rehabilitation centre for the injured, displaced and orphaned orangutans. Kinabalu Park and the Sabah Tea Gardens are also some of the interesting ecotourism destinations that you can visit.

pillars of Sabah 2.0 at Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

My favourite, however, was the Pillars of Sabah in the heart of Kota Kinabalu town. In this project, 30 Sabahan artists came together to highlight 30 threatened wildlife found in Sabah and its rainforests. 30 endangered species were painted on the pillars, thus spreading awareness on the protection of wildlife.

You may choose to stay at Kota Kinabalu. If you want to get an experience of the tea gardens, then Sabah Tea Resort is a great place to stay.

Thimpu, Bhutan

Explored by Dagney from Cultura Obscura

Golden Buddha at Buddha Point Thimphu - ecotourism destinations in the world

Thimphu, Bhutan is one of the best ecotourism destinations for sustainable travel. Bhutan is actually the only country in the world with a negative carbon footprint. The country produces 1.5 million tons of carbon, but due to all of the greenery, over 6 million tons are absorbed. Additionally, no animals can be slaughtered for consumption in Bhutan, which also cuts down on the country’s methane levels.

As the capital, Thimphu is the cultural heart of the country. There are many places to visit in Thimphu for eco-conscious travellers. Those looking for environmentally friendly activities can enjoy a hike at Kuenselphodrang Nature Park before marvelling at Buddha Point or can head to the Takin Preserve to spot the Bhutanese National animal. Alternatively, head to the Textile Museum or Choki Art School to learn about the importance Bhutan puts on preserving local handicrafts, which means almost nothing is imported into the country.

Put your feet up at Chh’a Bistro & Bar, an eco-friendly cafe serving delicious local food.

Indians can easily travel to neighbouring Bhutan via Phuentsholing or Gelphu, however, non-Indians normally need to arrange a tour and must fly into the country via the Paro airport. From Paro, transport to Thimphu can easily be arranged.

Koh Tao, Thailand

Explored by Lee from The Travel Scribes

Koh Tao Reef Thailand

When you think of Southeast Asia, eco-tourism isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. While the region plays host to millions of travellers each year, you’ll usually find that the countries in this region are more focussed on hospitality than having an impact on the planet. Not so on the small island of Koh Tao nestled in the Gulf of Thailand.

This tiny Thai outpost, also known as Turtle Island, punches above its weight when it comes to eco-friendliness. Known as one of the world’s ‘cheapest places to learn to dive’, Koh Tao  is leading the efforts to regenerate the ocean and practice sustainable diving and snorkelling in its waters. Led by a collective called Eco Koh Tao, they practice coral restoration, create artificial reefs and even have a comprehensive ‘adopt a coral’ program, to help restore the sea to its former glory. More than that, the island was one of the first to entirely ban single-use plastics – no plastic straws or shopping bags to be found here, where hotels and stores work together to provide better solutions for visitors.

Most people converge on Koh Tao from nearby Koh Samui or via ferry from Chumphon, journeying to the island for the diving but there is a lot more to do than just don your scuba gear. Koh Tao has some great laidback bars, a number of beautiful beaches and some stand-out snorkelling experiences, like swimming with blacktip reef sharks in Shark Bay. Trekkers will also enjoy a hike to John-Suwan viewpoint, to get sweeping views of the archipelago.

Jyrgalan, Kyrgyzstan

Explored by Stephen from Asia Hikes

Jyrgalan Kyrgyzstan

From Soviet-era coal mining community to economic dead-end, the small community of Jyrgalan in Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kol oblast has reinvented itself in recent years as an ecotourism hub popular with independent travellers. From anywhere in the village, travellers can strap on a backpack or saddle up a horse to head out for adventures of a day, a week, or longer; time and pack size are the only real limits, and money spent here stays within the community and contributes to local projects.

Jyrgalan is the starting point for horse treks and hiking in summer – everything from day trips to Kok-Bel Waterfall or Turnaly-Kol lake to massive trips like the epic week-long Ak-Suu Transverse Trek across a succession of sparkling mountain lakes. In winter, the village is popular as a base for backcountry freeride skiing – snowcats, snowmobiles, or old-fashioned skin-ups are available for hire; most days can be arranged to tour untouched powder in a variety of landscapes (and skill levels).

Six guesthouses in Jyrgalan provide beds for visitors – the original on the scene and still the best facilities are at the Ala-Kol Guesthouse. Any of the others in the village, while smaller, still provide a comfortable welcome and a friendly family vibe for visitors.

Jyrgalan is an easy Marshrutka minibus ride from the trekking hub of Karakol – the #331 makes the trip in an hour and a half three times per day.

Lahaul and Spiti Valley, India

Explored by Suruchi & Tashi from AllGudThings

Lahaul Spiti Valley - ecotourism destination in India

Lahaul Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh is the extension of mesmerizing landscapes of Tibet with challenging terrains and adventurous hairpin bend roads. It is a dry desert with the towering Himalayas in the background and the emerald green River Sutlej and Spiti feeding the area. The valley has absolutely calming vibes and is a visual treat for every tourist, traveller, photographer, and adventurist.

Throughout the Valley, one can see delightful signage’s telling the name and sparse population of a village, ranging from 20 to 500. The terrain is extremely harsh and an eco-sensitive zone. Villagers remain snowbound for almost 6 months (i.e. winters) in a year & valley is maintained by Border Roads Organization (BRO) throughout the year.

Lahaul Spiti is a nature’s paradise and is one of the best ecotourism destinations in India. It is a place to relax and enjoy the changing colours, terrains & the beauty of Himalayas. Apart from this, spend time with the lamas in the Tabo, Dhankar & Key monastery, listen to the stories of the valley from locals, relish their local cuisines, drive to the surrounding villages like Gue, Dhankar, Hikkim, Kibber, Chicham, Tashigang, Langza and Pin Valley and also check the moon lake – Chandratal.

At Kaza, enjoy local Thupka & momos in the main market & visit Café Dezyor for Tandoori, Tibetan, & European cuisines. Their Pizzas and jacket potatoes are our favourite. At Batal, enjoy Kadi Chawal at Chacha Chachi Dhabha or at the other shacks around.

There are multiple homestays at Nako but we always prefer to stay at Knaygoh Kinner camps too because of its location. Baba’s / Phunstok’s Homestay or Tabo monastery in Tabo, Pema Homestay or Hotel Deyzor at Kaza and Tenzin Camps at Chandrataal Lake are our recommendations.

Aryan Valley, India

Explored by Jitaditya from The Travelling Slacker

Dah Bima Aryan Valley Sustainable travel destination in India

For me, sustainable travel means something that involves the native population. It can’t be sustainable unless it is rooted in local culture and the locals can make a living out of it. This is why I consider the Dah- Hanu and nearby villages of Ladakh to be a great sustainable travel destination.

There are several villages inhabited by Brokpas on the banks of Indus, which can be reached with a 5-6 hour bus ride from Leh. I stayed in a homestay in Dah Village, run by a local family, set amidst a vineyard. Apart from local history and culture, do explore local food and wine too. They even make jam out of apricot and mulberry and sell to the tourists.

The Brokpas are a Dardic community that still maintain their unique culture and ancient religion, while they are surrounded by dominant Muslim and Buddhist areas on all sides. Some people consider them to be the last pure-bred Indo-Aryan community although there are many conflicting theories in this regard. This is why nowadays the area is also called the Aryan Valley .

Daluyon Beach and Mountain Resort, The Philippines

Contributed by Elsa Jose from Travelling Quote

Daluyon Beach and Mountain Resort in Philippines, eco friendly travel destination

Daluyon Beach and Mountain Resort is a multi-awarded resort located in Palawan, Philippines, the place recognized locally and internationally as a green and ecotourism destination.  As one stay on Daluyon Resort, the feeling is so overwhelming that, finally, you found a paradise that is really well-cared of amidst the modernization of the world.

Plan a trip to Palawan by booking a travel going to Puerto Princesa City as the destination.  From its airport, the travel is about two hours to the resort.  Daluyon Resort will be the one to handle all your transportation.  A van would pick you up from the airport and nothing to worry about.

The best thing to do in Daluyon is sitting on the terrace of their cabana and see the waves, feel the wind, hear the whisper of the birds, smell the cleanliness of the place and drinking the whole view from the mountains to the sea up to the shore, feeling the embrace of the tropical trees.  You just stand there and you would be grateful that you had a chance to experience all of these.

And when you settle your mind and convince yourself that you are not in a dream, your stomach will growl and you can proceed to their Pawikan restaurant that offers local cuisines and international foods.

There is so much more of Daluyon Resort, so much exploring to do so better stay longer to feel the magic of being one with nature.

Pondicherry, India

Explored by Debjani Lahiri from The Vagabong

Auroville Pondicherry ecotourism destination in India

Pondicherry, fondly known as “Pondy” is one of the most beautiful ecotourism destinations in Southern India. It was a former French colony that is a perfect amalgamation of the traditional South Indian and French architecture, making it a dreamy escape that offers the best of both worlds. Quaint boulevards of White town which mainly boast the French influence in their architecture and themed chic cafes and restaurants have a perfect laid back charm of the city. What appealed me was the simplicity and elegance which this city has.

Apart from known for its stunning beaches, adventure activities , niche homestays, laid back ambience and quirky boutiques; Pondicherry is also famous for Auroville, a community of Eco-dwellers. The model township built with a massive effort of long term afforestation over acres and acres of parched barren land a few years ago. Today, Auroville has several communities and projects focused on reforestation, water conservation and sustainable living.

Matri Mandir is the meditation centre which is a beautiful dome-shaped building erected right in the middle of Auroville. There are many eco-friendly communities running inside Auroville which supports volunteering opportunities in terms of organic farming and sustainability projects. Sadhana Forest is one such conservation project which aimed at reforesting 70 acres of barren land with Indigenous Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. You can also learn organic farming and enrol for a yoga session here.

Auroville Bakery, Tanto Pizerria, Garden Cafe, Bread and chocolate Bakery are some of the best places to eat.

There are many Airbnb and cosy homestay in Pondicherry in White Town area. For a guest house stay in Auroville, it is recommended to send a mail well in advance to [email protected]

Ecotourism destinations in Europe

Camp Adventure, Denmark

Explored by Derek and Mike from Everything Copenhagen

Camp Adventure Denmark Europe

It can be a challenge to find an ecotourism destination that is also highly accessible.  Camp Adventure , located about an hour south of Copenhagen, offers a delightful forest trip for people of any age or accessibility level.

The highlight of Camp Adventure is the Forest Tower, a stunning structure that rises 45 meters (147 feet) above the forest floor. On a clear day, you can see as far as Copenhagen and Sweden. But the tower lets you slowly ascend above the tree-tops, experiencing views that only birds get to experience. The tower is also an architectural masterpiece, with a spiral ramp that sits within a helix structure.

The tower sits about a kilometre inside the forest, and you follow a wooden-decked path from the parking lot. This makes the trip both wheelchair and stroller accessible, making a pleasant hike in the woods accessible to everyone. And starting in 2020 you can enjoy glamping at Camp Adventure. You can rent a yurt that is perched on a deck above a lake, offering views of both the forest and the night sky.

Camp Adventure also has a climbing park, offering ten courses for all ability levels. The park ranges from net climbs and barrel crawls to zip lines and ropes 25 meters above the forest floor. The zip line itself is the longest in Northern Europe and is a thrill for anyone who tries.

The mission of Camp Adventure is to make nature accessible to all, and they offer visitors to Copenhagen the chance to easily and memorably experience the natural beauty of Denmark.

Texel Island, Netherlands

Texel Island Netherlands Europe ecotourism destinations

Texel Island is the paradise in Europe – no, I’m really not exaggerating. Its just 8km x 21km. Its relatively unknown and its not really very easy to reach. So yeah, it is still a paradise!!!! Shhh… It’s a secret.

Within the island, the Texel-hopper buses are zero-emission and have a unique concept. There are 2 routes, one permanent route that connects the major villages and ferry point, and another that goes into the smaller villages runs only those villages where someone calls & reserves! No energy is wasted unnecessarily at all!!!

That said, the best way to enjoy this island is definitely by bikes. Bike rentals are available as soon as you descend the ferry. Electric bikes are best if you’re not a regular biker. The island is made for cycling. It has a dedicated cycling path all over the island that extends as long as 140km!

Sheep-rearing is the main occupation of the people here and cycling through the island, you’ll spot sheep, cows, pigs, ponies, horses, ducks, swans and much more. The western & northern coast of the island is filled with marshlands and its such a rich ecosystem, filled with several types of birds, jellyfish, seals and more. It is necessary to take a guided walk through this marsh to understand this ecosystem and to do some mind-blowing bird-watching!!!!

Hiking in the GSA Biosphere ecotourism destinations in Europe

Nature is what makes Scotland so attractive! There are many nature reserves and even two national parks to discover, but one of the best places to immerse yourself in Scotland’s natural beauty in an eco-friendly way is the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere.

Located in the south-west of Scotland, this ecotourism destination is a UNESCO-designated area that includes protected nature zones, inhabited areas and many towns. The Biosphere’s mission is to create a connection between people’s everyday life and the importance of environmental conservation. As such, it offers many opportunities for locals and visitors alike to learn about the local flora and fauna, eco-friendly activities and how to get involved in sustainable action.

The aim is to make sustainability an integral part of the economic and cultural development of the region. And spending a  weekend in the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere  shows that this strategy is working!

The GSA Biosphere has trained locals to become tour guides and start their own nature-based tourism businesses. Visitors can explore the region on e-bikes, go kayaking or paddle-boarding on the pristine waters of Loch Trool, experience the dark night skies and stargaze with a Dark Sky Ranger or go on guided hikes in the Galloway Hills.

I recommend basing yourself around Glentrool and Newton Stewart to have easy access to nature activities. Driving from Edinburgh takes approx. 2.5 hours. For an eco-friendly accommodation option, check out the Creeside Escape Sheperd’s Hut with view of the Galloway Hills.

Driving Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria

Ecofriendly Travel Destinations – Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Eco-friendliness doesn’t often go together with travel. Cars and air travelling have a rather negative impact on nature and can have a catastrophic impact on our planet long term. So, what can we do promote eco-friendly and sustainable travel and is it possible at all?

We believe that small, baby-steps are the way to do that. It’s better to have 1000s of people doing small things, which help to decrease the impact on nature travel has than a few people doing big things.

When we visited Austria, we did learn exactly that – promoting eco-friendliness and showing people that it can save money too was a great approach.

Driving Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria is a must for every tourist spending holiday in the stunning country. There is a fee to enter the road, but the owners came up with a great idea to make it a little bit more eco-friendly. There is a lower entry fee for electric cars! They are actively promoting visitors who use electric-powered cars and explain how traditional cars are impacting nature – a brilliant way to make travel a little bit more eco-friendly.

So, when you choose the next holiday destination, try to find one or two activities which are promoting ecotourism destinations – we all can do our bit to protect this beautiful world.

Turtle Bay Kenya ecotourism destination

Kenya’s iridescent beaches are some of the most alluring in the world. The lukewarm waters of the Indian Ocean crash on to powder-soft sand and palm festooned beaches, it is a tropical paradise to rival anywhere in the world. But if you scratch the surface, paradise is in trouble and this is where the first Eco Hotels in Kenya are starting to make a difference.

On a bad day, some beaches in Kenya are littered with plastic rubbish; bottle tops and flip flops vying for space with shells and crabs. Kenya’s coastline is a key breeding point for turtles, and whales, sharks, dolphins, rays and all manner of tropical ocean life traverse our shores.  Keeping our beaches and oceans clean is of paramount importance.

Turtle Bay Beach Resort has a prime spot on one of the best beaches in Kenya, Watamu . and it has been graded an eco-hotel.  They work alongside Watamu Turtle Watch to actively protect nesting turtles in Watamu. In collaboration the patrol the beach to safeguard nests, rescue and rehabilitate turtles, and work to educate local fisherman.

Turtle Bay strives to make every aspect of their hotels eco-friendly, from the water they use and how they sewerage it, to the materials they buy for renovations and the product they buy for their kitchens. Turtle Bay uses mostly renewable materials, buys local, and reuse and recycle where they can.   They run an active community programme for educating local people; areas covered include sustainable crops to grow, conservation, renewable materials and energy sources.

Turtle Bay is just one of a number of Kenyan hotels that give back to the community and consciously work to keep their pristine environment alive. If you fancy visiting Kenya then I can highly recommend a few, all of which are in prime spots along the coast – Sands at Nomads and Maji Beach.

The Kenyan coast in a 60-minute flight, 6-hour train journey or 9-hour car journey from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. Alternatively, you can fly into Mombasa.

Ankazoberavina, Madagascar

Lemur on Ankazoberavina - ecotourism destination

Ankazoberavina is a tiny eco jewel in the Indian Ocean, only an hour’s boat ride from the touristy island, Nosy Be, north-west of Madagascar mainland. The paradisiac island is privately owned and houses a sole luxury eco-resort. There are two packs of lemurs living on Ankazoberavina which will start lurking around the dinner table as soon as the fruit comes out for dessert. A couple of these lemurs have been saved from unethical animal tourism activities by the owner, Max. They totally adore him, and if you are lucky, they will come to sit on your lap too. But only on their own premises, as they are wild (but used to humans due to their past) animals and live freely in the island’s wild jungle together with the other animals.

Though the island is tiny, there are plenty of activities for those who want more than chilling on the beach with a  good travel book . You can snorkel with green turtles straight off the beach. In the right season, you can spot tiny baby sharks taking refuge in the mangroves or baby turtles hatch on the beach. Both Max and his staff are highly educated on the wildlife on the island and assure that no humans interfere in their natural behavior. Other than a couple of jungle walks and natural pools, you can join snorkeling trips to nearby islands, scuba diving, whale watching and even snorkeling with whale sharks at the right time a year.

Lamu, Kenya

Explored by Lisanne from Africa Originals

Lamu Kenya

Lamu, a small Swahili coastal town in Kenya, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that you shouldn’t miss when visiting Kenya. Lamu’s architecture is one of the oldest and best-preserved in east Africa.

No motorized vehicles are allowed in the old town; fast and heavy transportation is done by the many donkeys you’ll find standing around. This makes it the perfect place to discover by foot, just walk around and soak in Lamu’s rich culture. If you get tired, find a waterfront restaurant with seating upstairs, watch the hustle and bustle in the port while you enjoy some typical Swahili dishes.

While you’re in town, visit the Lamu Museum and learn about its history, or visit the old Lamu Fort. For relaxation, spend a day on the 12 km long Shela Beach, you can get there by foot or take a water taxi from Lamu. As the day comes to an end, treat yourself to a magical dhow sailing tour at sunset. These are just a few of the many things you can do .

The easiest way to get to Lamu from Nairobi is by plane. There are direct 1-hour flights and indirect flights with a stopover in Mombasa. The airport is situated on Manda Island, a short boat ride away from Lamu town.

Sleep in style by renting an apartment in the old town. It’s easy and very affordable to find a local chef to prepare the freshest and most authentic Swahili dishes for you.

Livingstonia, Malawi

Mushroom Farm treehouse Livingstonia - eco-friendly travel destination

Perched high above Lake Malawi and the Rift Valley Escarpment lies the historic town of Livingstonia. Originally known as Kondowe village, the settlement was reformed into a town by Scottish missionaries in the late 19th century. They established a university, a technical college and a hospital, all of which still function today and offer a much higher level of service that what is generally available in towns of this size in Malawi.

Grassroots, community-based tourism has developed here in recent years. Since Livingstonia is rather remote and the only road into town is in terrible shape, a stay here appeals mostly to young backpackers who don’t require too much luxury. The best of the accommodation options is probably the Mushroom Farm Eco-Lodge. It’s completely off-grid and offers a variety of affordable options, including safari tents, A-frame huts and one cosy treehouse. The attached restaurant is fully vegetarian and serves a delicious mix of international and Malawian cuisine .

A portion of the revenue from the eco-lodge is invested in community projects, including a kindergarten for local children and an adult literacy program. The lodge also trains young men from the area to work as tour guides, taking guests to nearby attractions such as the Chombe Plateau and the Manchewe waterfalls and caves. Manchewe, just two kilometres from the eco-lodge, is the tallest waterfall in the country. The head chef at the lodge, who is also a self-taught electrician, is working on a project to provide free electricity to Livingstonia by setting up a hydro-powered generator at the base of the falls.

Nuarro Lodge, Mozambique

Explored by Joss from Little Green Globetrotter

Sunset at Mozambique

Nuarro Lodge, located on the Nanatha bay in Mozambique, is perfect for those looking for an eco-friendly travel destination. They offer accommodation for a range of budgets and meals are local, fresh and delicious. Nuarro generates all its own electricity and clean water with renewable energy, it was built with sustainability and environmental impact in mind, it employs local staff and part of all the room and activity rates go to the local community. The owners also set up a charity to fund projects for the community, including the building and provision of a local school, medical centre and community centre.

Tourists can take an insightful cultural tour of the village, including the school and mosque, with a local member of staff to learn more about life here. There is a huge amount on this stunning stretch of Mozambique’s coast to enjoy!

The clear waters and nearby reef make for spectacular diving and snorkelling; sports enthusiasts can wake up to beach-side yoga and try kayaking, paddle boarding, and mountain biking; wildlife lovers will enjoy bird watching, bush drives and whale watching with knowledgeable guides (between the months of July and November pregnant humpbacks come here to birth their calves); and those looking to relax will enjoy a massage, setting sail in a traditional dhow, and soaking up the natural beauty of the area from the comfortable beach bar lounge. If you’re planning on travelling in Mozambique , make sure Nuarro is on your itinerary.

Ecotourism destinations in North America

Big island, hawaii.

Explored by Noel from This Hawaii Life

Wind Farm at Big Island Hawaii

Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii is one of the best ecotourism destinations you can travel for a sustainable vacation and feel good about your footprint on the island. There are many local initiatives that help to make the Big island and eco-friendly destination starting with a ban on plastic bags throughout the island with many residents re-using their own bags for shopping credit. There is a focus on eco-tourism around the island to include nature tours and hikes, soft tourism, a focus on agricultural tourism like coffee, macadamia and cacao farms all across the island and even adventure tours that encompass light impact activities like hiking, biking, snorkelling, surfing, kayaking and a variety of other water sports.  You can even DIY your own tours to historic and cultural sites like Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Place of Refuge or Honaunau and other national parks like Kalohko-Honokohau National Historical Park or Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site.

The Big Island also is one of the first locations worldwide putting a ban on sunscreen that is high on oxybenzone which is toxic to tropical fish and coral reefs. This ban will take effect at the beginning of 2021. Meanwhile, the island also relies on alternative energy like solar panels and solar water heaters, Geothermal, biomass plants for gas and studies on wave energy and thermal energy for future alternative energy on the island. So plan a visit soon and know that residents and visitors alike can benefit from tourism in ecofriendly fashion.

Mount Engadine Lodge, Canada

Mount Engadine Lodge, Canada - eco friendly travel destination

Mount Engadine Lodge is an all-inclusive accommodation tucked in amongst the mountains in the Canadian Rockies. Further away from the crowds in Banff and Canmore, it has been named one of the top hidden gems in Canada and for good reason. The vistas are incredible, the food is delicious, and there is no shortage of adventure and relaxation. There is a sauna onsite, hiking and biking trails nearby, and snowshoe and cross-country ski trails in the winter. Wildlife can often be viewed from the lodge as the meadow is a natural animal corridor.

They boast a variety of accommodation options and prices from luxurious cabins, rooms in the lodge, glamping tents, and a more rustic yurt camping option. They have partnered with an all-natural company to outfit their accommodations with comforters, linens, towels, and toiletries from the local company Rocky Mountain Soap Company. To improve their ecological footprint, they are part of the Ecostay Reforestation program.

Included in each of the accommodation options are breakfast, a packed lunch, an afternoon tea, and dinner. Locally sourced when possible, the breakfast and dinner are done family style and the afternoon tea is served from 2:00-5:00 pm. The afternoon tea features their famous charcuterie and a delicious dessert.

White Sands National Park, New Mexico

Explored by Margherita from The Crowded Planet

White Sands National Park New Mexico

White Sands is the most recent national park in New Mexico, having been established in December 2019. For this reason, and also considering the fact that it’s in a very remote location in southern NM, it’s far from being overrun with tourists – visit in the offseason, and you may very well have the place to yourself!

The park is famous for its stunning, blindingly-white gypsum sand dunes, the last remnant of an ancient sea that used to cover this part of North America. Things to do in White Sands include hiking along marked trails between the dunes – trails range in distance from less than one mile to 5 miles, and some of the shorter trails also include boards with info about the white dunes and the surrounding Chihuahuan desert.

However, those who really want to escape from it all and immerse themselves in the white sands environment should definitely consider spending one-night backcountry camping. To do so, it’s necessary to head to the visitor centre to get a permit – then, you can drive to the Backcountry Camping trailhead, pack your gear, and head off. The trail is about 2 miles long – you’ll be issued a permit for a specific site, but you may have to hike for a bit to reach it. The upside is that you’ll be spending a wonderful night under a magical starry sky – and more than likely, there will be no one else in sight.

The campsites have no facilities, so make sure you leave no trace when you pack up in the morning, to preserve the beauty of this wonderful, unspoiled place.

Belize eco-lodge stay

Western Belize is a great destination for people looking for a low-key, eco-friendly vacation. The region, known as the Cayo District, is home to numerous eco-lodges in the jungles surrounding the small town of San Ignacio. In fact, staying in an eco-lodge is one of the most popular things to do around San Ignacio . These jungle lodges are perfect places to relax in a sustainable yet luxurious way. For a dreamy escape, Table Rock Jungle Lodge offers impressive amenities without the carbon footprint that many hotels and resorts create. To be mindful of the environment, each individual cabana utilizes commercialized fans powered by solar energy for cooling. Electricity and WiFi are also limited on the property, so it’s the perfect opportunity to unwind and escape the busyness of everyday life. Much of the food prepared at the restaurant at the lodge is grown on the property and the water from the faucet used for washing is collected rain water. There is so much to do on-site, like tubing and canoeing on the Macal River, hiking the grounds at the lodge, or exploring the orchards on the property, you’ll have plenty to do to keep you entertained.

Chapada diamantina, brazil.

Explored by Mario from Rest & Recuperation

Chapada Diamantina Brazil ecofriendly travel destination

There is a place that I recently visited that made me love nature even more: the Chapada Diamantina in Brazil .

A Chapada in Portuguese is a highland . In this case, almost as big as Switzerland, located in the heart of Bahia State. This Chapada is called Diamantina because the area was rich in diamonds. Luckily, from the environment’s point of view, miners are no longer spoiling the mountains to find the precious stones. After a period of intense coffee production, nowadays the Chapada Diamantina is preserved as a niche tourist destination.

The starting point for every excursion in the area is the town of Lençois, where all miners used to begin their journey in the past. This beautiful village is at the very entrance of the highland and has some great and happy vibes that only a Brazilian tourist destination can have.

Stay at Odara Hostel and let the restaurants on the main street inspire you. If you are undecided, go for Lampiao, always a good choice.

In Lençois you will find all the offices of the companies organising what is the main activity in the Chapada Diamantina: trekking . My suggestion is to try one of the multi-day hikes in Vale do Pati. Four days are enough to see all the most beautiful natural wonders in the valley while staying at locals’ houses and eating their great food will be a once in a lifetime experience.

Uvita, Costa Rica

Uvita in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the best ecotourism destinations in the world. It has many national sustainability policies and has made ecotourism a priority. One of the best places to visit in Costa Rica that exemplifies this is the laid-back town of Uvita.

Uvita is on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, just an hour south of Manual Antonio on a well-paved highway. The main beach in Uvita is in a protected park – Ballena Marine National Park. It’s a marine park, where thousands of humpback whales migrate every year. It’s also a fantastic place to go surfing and diving. All the tour operators in the area are passionate about conservation and protecting the area for future generations. While diving with a local shop called Mad about Diving, I learned that they had started a nonprofit coral restoration association to reestablish corals in the area.

There are several places to stay in Uvita, but if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option in town, check out Karandi hostel. It has a beautiful outdoor garden with many herbs that guests are welcome to use for cooking. If you want to eat out, Sabor Espanol is an excellent Spanish style restaurant with locally sourced seafood. For a quick option after the beach, try El Hornito for delicious Argentinan style empanadas.

Giant anteater in Guyana

Guyana isn’t exactly a South American country with much name recognition. But it’s a great ecotourism destination with eco-friendly lodges and remarkable wildlife.

While much of the country is covered in pristine jungle, the Rupununi region in the far south is where the rainforest stops and huge stretches of grassland begin. Here, practically all of the remote scattering of lodgings is committed to sustainable, eco-friendly tourism, with a large focus on protecting the endemic wildlife.

One of the best is Karanambu Lodge. The owners have spent the past half a century working to rehabilitate giant river otters, which have historically been caught and turned into pets – or used for their pelts. If you’re lucky, they might have one on-site, which you can watch being taken down to the river for its breakfast.

But it’s not just the otters that make Karanambu one of Guyana’s unmissable tourist attractions . It’s also a location known for another large and breath-taking creature: the giant anteater. During our visit, we headed out into the grassy plains and followed a local cowboy out on foot to a grassy mound where an anteater, some two metres in length, slumbered in the shade.

Luckily for him – and us, Karanambu’s sizeable private reserve ensures that they remain protected and able to be appreciated by tourists for many years to come.

Humpback Whale Watching and Near Deserted Beaches in Nuquí, Colombia

Contributed by Adam McConnaughhay from CartagenaExplorer.com

Humpback whale watching in Nuqui Colombia ecotourism destinations

One of the few countries in the world with coasts on two oceans, Colombia is also among the countries with the highest biodiversity in the world.  From the stunning Chicamocha canyon, to the Amazon rainforest, to the lush mountain jungle and waterfalls of the town of Minca , it has no shortage of ecofriendly travel destinations.

However, probably the neatest ecotourism destination I have visited here in Colombia is the area around the little town of Nuquí on the Pacific Coast.  The area is most well known as a place to go whale watching.  Every year from June to October, humpback whales migrate to the warmer waters to mate and give birth.

Even if you can’t make it during whale season, Nuquí is worth a visit.  The nearby Guachalito Beach is beautiful.  I saw maybe 3 people all day along the long stretch of beach.  You can also hike to nearby waterfalls and visit the nearby Utría National Park.

The area is very remote, one of the reasons why it’s such a great ecotourism destination.  You can arrive on charter flights out of Medellín before taking a boat out to one of the Eco hostels and lodges outside of town.  I stayed at Piedra Piedra, located on a rock just above the beach, but La Joviseña is another popular option and El Cantillo offers a more higher-end experience.

Other than these small eco-lodges there isn’t much else, but you’ll get some excellent fresh fish for your meals and have lots of time to enjoy the tranquillity of being away from it all.  That makes it undoubtedly a great eco-friendly travel destination.

Ecotourism destinations in Oceania

Coral gardening at barefoot manta, fiji.

Contributed by Josh Shephard from The Lost Passport

Around the world coral reefs are bleaching and dying at an alarming rate due to ocean water temperature rise. While most of the world seems to stand back and watch it occur, some are taking action into their own hands.

A small team of marine biologists at Barefoot Manta Resort in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands have been focusing their efforts on coral gardening for the past few years. A reef that was not only impacted by temperature rise but demolished by a massive tropical cyclone, has seen a full recovery. What was once almost a coral graveyard has been returned to a self-declared sanctuary for marine life, home to one of Fiji’s diverse ranges of native fish species and a healthy population of majestic Manta Rays.

Barefoot Manta is located on Drawaqa Island in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands region. It is about 3 hours north of Nadi and can be easily reached by the Yasawa Flyer , an island-hopping purpose-built catamaran which runs a daily loop throughout the islands.

Barefoot Manta Resort is the only accommodation on the island. There are dorm rooms for budget-conscious backpackers, basic private bungalows in the mid-range, and glamping beachfront tents for those comfort-seeking flashpackers.

How many of these have you visited? I am sure there are many more beautiful and incredible ecotourism destinations around the world. Do let us know about the favourite eco-friendly travel vacation you had in comments below.

8 eco-friendly destinations where sustainability is priority

Mar 31, 2022 • 7 min read

Deciding to adopt a sustainable tourism ethos doesn’t mean vowing never to take another flight or to only travel to off-the-radar locales. Instead, invest your wanderlust in places that are rolling out initiatives to minimize the impact of tourism on the environment.

In many ways, travel can be a force for good, so kick-start your eco-friendly escape with one of these dynamic destinations doing their bit for sustainability; from hotels committed to reducing energy consumption, to pioneering tours and activities designed to give back to local communities and help wildlife thrive. These are some eco-friendly destinations you can visit in 2022.

Climber on the Cima Rocca, via ferrata with view of Lake Garda, Riva and Nago-Torbole, Trentino, Italy, Europe

Lake Garda, Italy

While the lavish shores of Lake Como may attract high-profile celebrities like George Clooney, when it comes to A-list environmentally-friendly hotspots, bigger is better! Not only does Lake Garda , Italy’s largest lake, have a direct rail connection from Milan , allowing visitors to leave their cars at home (or in the rental depot), it is also home to one of the country’s greenest hotels.

The beautiful Lefay Resort and Spa offsets 100 percent of its CO2 emissions, and 60 percent of its energy comes from renewable sources. Hi-tech design materials minimize heat and energy dispersion, and the roof is covered with vegetation to reduce sight pollution and promote local flora and fauna. De-stress with a massage at the spa, the first in Italy to be given Ecocert’s Ecological Spa certificate.

The Points Guy:  8 sustainable travel tips from expert green travelers

Arosa, Switzerland

Arosa is home to Hotel Valsana , Switzerland’s first hotel to be heated by an “ice battery” – an energy recovery system that reuses surplus heat energy that would otherwise have been lost to the surrounding environment. This charming alpine resort village is helping the environment in other ways, too. Several hotels have electric car charging points, and there’s even a charging point in the center of town that is free to use.

The area has also been given Alpine Pearl status – recognizing its “green mobility” and eco-conscious practices – by the tourism association of the same name. This EU-funded organization was set up to promote and support communities going above and beyond when it comes to sustainable tourism.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

A visit to the remote Galápagos Islands tops many people’s bucket list, but this same isolation, though incredibly attractive to travelers, can also require a motorcade of gas-guzzling transport options to get there. The good news? Several properties – such as the Pikaia Lodge – are going all out to protect this fragile environment and offset the environmental cost of getting there.

Believe it or not, this innovative carbon-neutral hotel is made with steel, chosen due to the ease with which it can be recycled. The walls are covered with lava stone collected from areas approved by the Galápagos National Park Service and the doors and furniture are made from sustainable teak.

First-timer's guide to the Galápagos Islands

The hotel has its own reforestation program (10,000 endemic trees have been planted so far), and water comes from rooftop rain harvesting systems.

The majority of tour operators here come with environmentally-conscious credentials, but be sure to do your research before booking and, where possible, travel in a small group so as to have as little impact on the wildlife and natural environment as possible.

A number of Bahamas properties are taking a more proactive approach to protect the environment. Take Kamalame Cay  on Andros  island, which encourages guests to dine on lionfish (an invasive species which preys on indigenous fish and disrupts the local ecosystem) or The Other Side hotel, which is entirely solar-powered.

At Tiamo Resort , all products used are carefully vetted to minimize the risk of pollution, with rooftop solar panels used to help heat water. And to ensure continued support of local communities, the Tiamo Resort recruits all of its employees from the Bahamas.

How to choose an island in the Bahamas

Coastal buildings at Pangulasian Island Resort

Pangulasian Island, Philippines

Pangulasian Island in the Philippines is a paradisiacal bolthole for those in search of an eco-friendly escape. This private island resort is dedicated to supporting the local people through economic initiatives. One such enterprise is teaching local women the traditional art of weaving, the products of which are then bought by and sold at the hotel.

There's also a wide-reaching nature conservation program that oversees twice-monthly coastal clean-ups, measures to protect against illegal fishing, the installation of Eco Reefs (to help resuscitate damaged marine environments) and mooring buoys (to avoid continued anchor damage on coral reefs) as well as a turtle conservation program.

The best beaches of the Philippines

Join in the efforts to protect new-born hatchlings as they make their first dash for the ocean and further your knowledge with an expert-led talk on wildlife and conservation.

And to keep this ecosystem in and of itself thriving, the staff here are also encouraged to submit proposals for environmentally-friendly initiatives, which are then trialed by the resort.

Werfenweng, Weissensee, Styria and Vienna, Austria

Werfenweng is a beautiful lakeside town that is changing the face of sustainable tourism. Anyone arriving at the train station (visitors are encouraged to leave their cars at home), can make use of a complimentary pick-up service, and purchase a Werfenweng Card , granting you access to many of the town's green initiatives including e-cars, novelty buggies and bikes.

And Werfenweng isn’t alone. In Weissensee , Hotel Gralhof  relies on a green energy wood chip heating system and has a fully organic kitchen, and the Styrian holiday resort of Ramsau operates the Ramsau Bioniere initiative, a selection of hotels, farms and guesthouses that display a commitment to reducing waste and energy consumption and championing organic produce.

Vienna is proof that being a green capital city needn’t involve compromising culture – in 2019, the Mercer Study voted it the world’s most liveable city. There are 2000 parks in the city, and the new Green Taxi scheme saw 370 hybrid and gas-powered taxis rolled out. Vienna also has more organic farmland than any other city (over 800 hectares and three city farms), 120 bike share stations and a network of cycling trails totaling 1300 kilometers.

Cascade waterfalls in the valley of Vall de Nuria in the Pyrenees Mountains in Catalonia, Spain

Catalonia, Spain

Catalonia is the first entire region to obtain the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification, a scheme backed by Unesco and the GTSC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council), in recognition of the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature in this region. And it’s easy for visitors to go green here; look for businesses with an EU Ecolabel, a certificate that spotlights environmentally-friendly, high-quality products and services.

Some of the region's most outstanding attractions include various former coal, lead and salt mines that have been turned into renewed cultural and environmental areas.

Walk in the fossilized footsteps of dinosaurs in the old open-air coal mines of  Fígols-Vallcebre Fumanya , now a designated paleontology site. Another great area is the Cardona Salt Mountain Cultural Park ; after the mine closed in the 1990s the park now offers visitors the chance to learn about the region's unique natural geology.

Costa Rica aims to become the world’s first carbon-neutral country, and has been pushing a bold agenda to meet this goal. Almost all of its electricity comes from renewable resources, and the UN was so impressed with conservation efforts that it made the country’s former president, Luis Guillermo Solís, a special ambassador to their World Tourism Organisation.

His next project is an environmentally friendly makeover of the world’s favorite caffeine fix – coffee. It’s Costa Rica’s biggest export, but also the biggest source of CO2 emissions. The Coffee Institute of Costa Rica has joined forces with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop a process that traps gas produced by decomposing coffee waste and uses it to power combustion engines.

As more and more travelers seek to reduce their environmental impact, ecotourism has emerged as a popular way to explore nature responsibly. This type of travel prioritizes practices that minimize negative effects on the environment and benefit local communities. In this article, we’ll delve into ecotourism’s main benefits and highlight some of the world’s top places for eco-conscious travelers.

What Is Ecotourism

Ecotourism is a form of sustainable tourism that promotes responsible travel to nature while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and supporting the well-being of local communities. It is mainly characterized by its focus on conservation, education, and community involvement. Ecotourism activities typically include visiting natural areas such as national parks, wildlife reserves, and forests and can contain activities such as birdwatching, hiking, and wildlife photography. The primary goal of ecotourism is to provide an immersive experience for visitors to appreciate and learn about the natural world, while at the same time contributing to conservation efforts and local economies.

Benefits of Ecotourism

Traditional tourism often prioritizes profit over environmental and cultural sustainability, leading to negative impacts on local communities, ecosystems, and cultural heritage sites. For instance, Bali, Indonesia, has suffered from significant over-tourism in recent years, resulting in environmental degradation, overcrowding, and strain on the island’s infrastructure. Similarly, native Hawaiians have been calling for tourists to respect their culture and the environment by avoiding certain sacred sites, such as the summit of Mauna Kea. Additionally, the high volume of visitors to Machu Picchu in Peru has led to littering, overcrowding, and damage to the ancient ruins, prompting the Peruvian government to limit the number of daily visitors and implement other measures to protect the site.

However, ecotourism offers a more responsible and sustainable alternative that can mitigate these issues. By focusing on reducing pollution and waste, educating travelers about conservation efforts, and supporting local economies, ecotourism not only protects the environment but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the places being visited.

Another significant benefit of ecotourism is its potential to educate travelers about the importance of preserving nature and protecting wildlife habitats. It allows visitors to learn more about the environment they are visiting while assisting with conservation efforts, like beach cleanups or tree planting initiatives. These educational experiences can also inspire travelers to adopt positive behavior in their everyday lives, such as by making a more conscious effort to assist with conservation and sustainability.

In addition to environmental benefits, ecotourism can also bring positive impacts to local communities. It can create jobs and income opportunities for people living near tourist destinations, supporting local economies. By participating in ecotourism activities, travelers can also encourage governments, businesses, charitable organizations, and others to take conservation efforts seriously.

Furthermore, ecotourists have the opportunity to learn about a culture’s customs, beliefs, and food habits, which helps to broaden their perspectives and understanding of different ways of life. Also, tourists in areas that have not historically been tourist hotspots can help locals learn new skills, such as hospitality or language skills.

Top Ecotourism Destinations for Responsible Travelers

Now that you know how ecotourism can make a positive impact on the environment and local communities, it’s time to explore some of the world’s most breathtaking and responsible travel destinations.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands, located off the coast of Ecuador, are a once-in-a-lifetime ecotourism destination. Designated as the first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islands boast an exceptional ecosystem that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Rocky shores of the Galapagos Islands.

Galapagos is home to a variety of unique species, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies, among others. Due to their isolated location, the animals have evolved into new species over time, making the Galapagos a living laboratory of evolution. Actually, the flora and fauna found here have played an important role in educating the world about our planet and inspiring Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution. The protected waters surrounding the islands offer visitors the chance to swim with sharks, sea turtles, and sea lions, among other marine life.

Although tourism once threatened the islands, they are no longer listed as ‘in danger’ thanks to strong management and continued stewardship from the government, NGOs, and the local community, who work to build the most sustainable tourism sector that has ever existed. However, all visitors should be aware of the possible by-products of irresponsible tourism, such as contamination from boat oil, the introduction of non-native species, and overconsumption of the freshwater supply, and take measures to ensure they don’t unwittingly harm the land.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one experience that combines lodging and tours, the Galapagos Safari Camp is a great choice. This eco-lodge offers deluxe tented accommodations in the midst of the island’s natural landscapes and also provides a range of guided tours and activities to explore the Galapagos. Another option is the Santa Cruz II , a luxury expedition vessel that provides a comfortable base for exploring the islands with daily guided excursions and activities, including snorkeling and kayaking.

The Amazon rainforest is an ecological marvel that has millions of species of plants and animals, including some that have yet to be discovered. It is a biodiverse wonderland that covers an area of 5.5 million square kilometers and is spread across nine South American countries. The Amazon has been called the lungs of the planet because it produces over 20% of the world’s oxygen. In addition, it acts as a natural carbon sink, helping to regulate the Earth’s climate.

Amazon rainforest

There is something for every type of traveler in the Amazon. Adventure seekers can embark on a jungle trek, canoe down the river, or try their hand at piranha fishing. Wildlife lovers can spot exotic species such as jaguars, pink river dolphins, and giant otters. Cultural enthusiasts can learn about the indigenous tribes that call the Amazon home and their way of life. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, they can take a leisurely boat ride down the river and enjoy the breathtaking views.

Aerial view of the Amazon rainforest, Brazil.

Historically, ecotourism in the Amazon was primarily led by indigenous individuals who sought to replace more destructive forms of tourism and educate visitors about local customs and practices. Today ecotourism is a powerful tool in the battle to protect the Amazon rainforest from deforestation, illegal logging, and climate change. This sustainable tourism practice can offer a viable source of income for local communities, thereby reducing their dependence on activities like logging and farming that can be detrimental to the forest’s health. Moreover, ecotourism can help to facilitate cultural exchange and understanding by supporting local businesses and employing native guides, which may ultimately help to prevent conflict between indigenous communities and outsiders.

For a truly immersive experience in the Amazon rainforest, consider staying at one of the many eco-lodges in the area. The Napo Wildlife Center , located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, offers comfortable accommodations and guided excursions that allow visitors to explore the surrounding jungle while supporting the local community. Alternatively, the Uakari Lodge in Brazil offers a unique opportunity to see the critically endangered red uakari monkey, while also practicing sustainable tourism. Another option is the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Peru, which offers luxury accommodations and various activities such as wildlife watching, rainforest canopy walks, and visits to nearby native communities.

Costa Rica is a well-known ecotourism destination that offers visitors a chance to experience the pure life or “pura vida” lifestyle surrounded by nature. Over 25% of the country is dedicated to national parks, wildlife reserves, and protected lands, showcasing the country’s commitment to conservation.

Swamp area in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica.

Corcovado National Park is an absolute paradise for nature lovers, earning the title of “the most biologically intense place on earth” by National Geographic. This 400 square kilometers park is a treasure trove of biodiversity, boasting 13 different ecosystems within its boundaries, from lowland tropical rainforests to highland cloud forests, mangrove swamps, and sandy beaches. And if that isn’t enough to get you excited, the park is home to a spectacular array of wildlife, including four different monkey species, sloths, anteaters, and collared peccaries. Keep your eyes peeled and you may even spot whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals offshore. Corcovado is also home to endangered species like the Baird’s Tapir, jaguars, and Harpy Eagles, making it an ideal destination for wildlife photographers and environmental explorers.

For those who want to do more than just sightseeing, Costa Rica offers plenty of opportunities to get involved in ecotourism through volunteering. Visitors can volunteer with local coffee farmers and learn about sustainable farming practices, contributing to the country’s efforts toward sustainability. Sea turtle conservation programs are also a popular option for volunteers, where they can participate in the protection and conservation of these majestic creatures.

Eco travelers can choose from a variety of lodging options, including eco-lodges, boutique hotels, and sustainable resorts. The Pacuare Lodge offers a unique experience with its remote location accessible only by rafting down the Pacuare River, while Lapa Rios Ecolodge provides ocean and rainforest views from its private bungalows. For those seeking a luxurious getaway, the Nayara Resort Spa & Gardens offers a range of amenities such as hot springs, spas, and private villas surrounded by lush gardens.

Kenya is a true gem when it comes to ecotourism in Africa. With its diverse natural landscapes ranging from the famous Masai Mara plains to stunning mountains, pristine beaches, and offshore coral reefs, Kenya offers an unparalleled experience for eco-travelers. The country boasts 54 national parks, which attract over a million tourists every year, making it one of the most popular destinations for ecotourism in Africa.

Masai Mara, Kenya.

One of the main attractions for tourists is the opportunity to experience grassland safaris and get up close and personal with some of the world’s most impressive animals such as giraffes, lions, and rhinos. However, with this increase in tourism comes the responsibility to protect the natural environment and the wildlife that inhabits it. The Kenyan government has taken an active role in protecting its natural heritage by stopping illegal poaching, banning single-use plastics, and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

To further promote sustainable tourism, the government has established an organization called “ Ecotourism Kenya .” This organization is dedicated to promoting responsible tourism that conserves Kenya’s natural environment and improves the livelihoods of local communities. By partnering with local communities, the organization ensures that they are involved in the tourism industry and reap the benefits of a thriving tourism sector while also preserving their cultural heritage and natural resources.

In addition to the wildlife and natural landscapes, Kenya’s cultural diversity also makes it a unique ecotourism destination. Visitors can explore and engage with the traditional lifestyle of the Maasai people, learning about their rich history and customs. They can also participate in community-based tourism activities such as beadwork, pottery, and traditional dances.

For travelers on a budget, there are many affordable options, such as camping in public campsites or staying in budget-friendly guesthouses like the Wildebeest Eco Camp or the Karen Camp . Additionally, for those who want a more authentic and immersive experience, there are community-owned lodges like the Maasai Mara Wilderness Conservancy or the Ol Pejeta Conservancy , which feature excellent opportunities to interact with local people, learn about their cultures, and participate in conservation efforts.

Nestled in the majestic Himalayan Mountains and flanked by India and China lies Bhutan, a land steeped in ancient traditions and shrouded in mystery. For centuries, Bhutan had isolated itself from the rest of the world, but today, it is renowned as one of the best examples of ecotourism destinations.

Punakha Dzong, the administrative center of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan.

Bhutan’s focus on history and nature allows visitors to experience sacred Buddhist sites and wildlife parks teeming with unique species such as the Himalayan black bear, takin, red panda, and Tibetan wolf. The country’s emphasis on sustainability and preservation of its natural and cultural heritage is a testament to Bhutan’s dedication to environmental conservation.

Since 1991, Bhutan has implemented a daily Sustainable Development Fee for tourists, which was originally 65 USD per day, but has risen to 200 USD per day in 2022. Though the fee may seem steep, the incredible outcomes that it has produced are worth the cost. The money collected from the fee is used for funding projects such as offsetting Bhutan’s carbon footprint from tourism, supporting community education, organic farming, and upskilling workers in the tourism industry.

If you’re planning a trip to Bhutan, you’ll find a range of accommodations to suit your preferences. The Amankora Resorts presents unparalleled Himalayan views and top-notch amenities in a luxury setting. If you’re looking for an eco-friendly and affordable option, Gangtey Lodge is a great choice. This lodge seamlessly blends modern comforts with traditional Bhutanese architecture, all while prioritizing sustainable tourism practices.

A journey to Bhutan may come with a price tag, but the value of experiencing its distinctive environment and culture, all while contributing to its conservation, is truly priceless.

Iceland is a shining example of ecotourism in Northern Europe, with a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. As the cleanest energy consumer in the world, taking 75% of its usage from renewable sources, Iceland is a global leader in environmental policies.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Iceland

The breathtaking landscapes of Iceland are the main attraction for eco-tourists. This is one of the last untouched destinations on earth, with inspiring scenery at every turn. Between waterfalls, glaciers, dramatic fjords, volcanoes, cracked lava fields, gushing geysers, and geothermal lagoons, Iceland is a country defined by its outdoors. Visitors can enjoy a range of adventurous activities such as white water rafting, horse riding, caving, quad bikes, and glacier climbing, all while maintaining a sustainable and responsible approach.

The tourism industry in Iceland has grown rapidly in recent years. Despite this growth, the industry remains committed to responsible tourism, ensuring that visitors can experience the beauty of the Aurora borealis, Blue Lagoon, and Gulfoss waterfalls without harming the delicate ecological balance.

Aside from its natural wonders, Iceland has a wide selection of lodging options for travelers. The Ion Adventure Hotel with its prime location and contemporary design, guarantees a memorable stay. Alternative accommodations include hostels like Kex Hotel or campsites such as Skjol , which offer a spacious and comfortable atmosphere at a reasonable price.

Norway is a top ecotourism destination that boasts some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world. From picturesque fjords to snow-capped mountains and endless beaches, Norway’s scenery is truly breathtaking.

Jotunheimen National Park, Norway.

One of the must-visit destinations in Norway is the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed area that features a beautiful blue fjord set against a backdrop of majestic mountains. Here, visitors can witness the true wonder of nature, with diverse wildlife and a series of offshore islands at Lofoten, where eagles, seals, and porpoises can be spotted.

For adventure seekers, Jotunheimen National Park is a haven, with towering peaks, vast glaciers, and pristine lakes, offering the perfect opportunity for activities like hiking, kayaking, skiing, and cruising through the fjords. The park is also home to rare species such as the arctic fox, reindeer, and wolverine, making it an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

Norway’s impressive sustainable policies have played a significant role in preserving its natural beauty. The government has implemented strict regulations on hunting, fishing, and oil companies. Furthermore, Norway has become one of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council pilot destinations. Inclusion on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s model list means that Norway has met rigorous sustainability criteria across all aspects of its tourism industry, from environmental protection to community development and cultural preservation.

Norway has a lot to offer in terms of natural beauty, so it’s worth considering extending your stay to make the most of its majestic landscapes and scenery. For sustainable accommodation, we recommend Juvet Landscape Hotel , which is located in the beautiful natural surroundings of Valldal. For a bit of an upscale experience consider staying at the historic Hotel Continental in Oslo, which offers a sophisticated ambiance with state-of-the-art facilities.

Remember to travel far and wide, but to leave behind only footprints and happy memories.

Preserving Paradise: Amazing Eco-Tourism Initiatives in National Parks To Know About

  • National parks are crucial for conservation and sustainability, preserving fragile environments, vulnerable wildlife, and historically significant locations.
  • Eco-tourism plays a key role in supporting national parks by limiting environmental impact, avoiding overcrowding, and contributing to the local economy.
  • Conservation efforts behind the scenes at national parks, such as community involvement and wildlife protection, are essential for preserving unique ecosystems and species.

National parks are widely considered one of the greatest examples of conservation around the world. Preserving fragile environments, vulnerable wildlife, and historically significant locations, national parks are a critical part of sustainability and ecological health.

The national park system started in 1872 with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in the US. From this simple start, thousands of national parks all over the world have come into being. While these parks' very existence is a great first step in protecting these landscapes, it's what happens next that really makes a difference.

National parks have played a key role in the expansion of eco-tourism, a form of tourism focused on limiting adverse environmental impact, avoiding overcrowded areas, and positively contributing to the destination. Paying to visit a national park, thereby supporting its mission and conservation, is just the start of the ways guests can be eco-friendly while visiting national parks .

As much as the visitors do by going to the parks, it's what's happening behind the scenes that makes a difference. There are plenty of examples of sustainability and eco-initiatives in US national parks , but these efforts can be found in parks all over the world. Here are just a few examples of the major conservation efforts going on behind the scenes at some of the world's favorite national parks.

Owned By The People - Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

There are a number of ways that national parks are preserving their environments. Perhaps one of the most interesting examples of ecotourism in national parks can be found in Scotland at Cairngorms National Park. Cairngorms National Park is a haven for outdoor activities, facilitating hiking, water sports, and winter activities depending on the time of year.

About Cairngorms National Park

  • Location: Scotland, United Kingdom
  • Entrance Fee: FREE
  • Hours: 24/7 (excluding Christmas Day)

What really makes this park special, however, is who manages this natural playground. Most national parks are managed by the state or national government, or by a designated park service that works with the government.

Cairngorms National Park, however, knows that part of preserving the environment is preserving the integrity of the surrounding towns. That is why, instead of being managed by the state, this national park is owned by the people.

According to the park’s website, the Cairngorms National Park Authority “work[s] with partners, business, land-owners, and communities to develop long term plans for the Park.” Effectively, this park is managed by the people of the nearby towns, instead of solely by a separate entity.

Why does this matter for ecotourism? One of the many popular tips in most guides on eco-tourism and eco-travel include investing in the local economy.

By giving the power of the park over to the people, visitors can rent gear from locals, follow paths that the locals deem safe for the region, and generally visit in a way that is not disruptive to either the natural landscape or culture of the area.

Saving The Nēnēs - Hawaii's National Parks

National parks are designed to preserve sensitive and unique ecosystems, including all varieties of plant and animal life. While many know the story of the gray wolves of Yellowstone National Park, there are a number of far less well-known species that exist today only because of the conservation efforts of the national park system.

Such is the case with the Nēnē goose in Hawaii. There were once nine native goose species in Hawaii , living in isolation on the islands. Due to human encroachment, loss of habitat and food, and the introduction of non-native predators like dogs, eight of those species have disappeared.

Thankfully, devoted efforts of the two national parks in Hawaii have been able to save the Nēnē. Both Haleakalā National Park on Maui and Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island have worked tirelessly to monitor and protect the native Nēnē population.

The Nēnēs once roamed all of the Hawaiian islands, numbering in the thousands. By the 1940s, only around 30 individuals remained . These birds were moved to the protected lands of the national parks, where they could remain undisturbed.

Today, while the population is still considered vulnerable, numbers are steadily increasing, and the odds of spotting one of these once critically endangered birds on one of Hawaii’s many secret and scenic hikes are ever-increasing.

About the Nēnē Goose Recovery

  • Original Number of Native Goose Species in Hawaii: 9
  • Current Number of Native Goose Species in Hawaii: 1
  • Low Count of Nēnē Population: ~30 birds
  • Current Count of Nēnē Population: ~1,400 birds
  • Where to See the Nēnē: Haleakalā National Park, Maui and Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Big Island

Migration Highways - Banff National Park, Canada

Once considered a " waste of taxpayers' money ," the wildlife migration bridges of Banff National Park are now hailed as one of the most successful conservation projects in national parks anywhere in the world. They are so successful, in fact, that they have been recreated not just in other national parks, but in high-traffic areas outside of parks as well.

What exactly are migration highways ? They are, for all intents and purposes, a bridge that goes over or a tunnel that goes under a road. What makes these bridges and tunnels unique, however, are the travelers they are meant to provide access for.

Like a pedestrian bridge over a major highway, migration highways are designed to allow native wildlife a way to cross the roads without having to brave the traffic.

Related: A Safe Passage For Utah's Wildlife: The 1-80 Wildlife Overpass And Its Role In Conservation

Atop these bridges is a recreation of the natural habitat, making it a comfortable place to cross.

The benefits of this ecotourism initiative are numerous. First and foremost, these bridges reduce unfortunate wildlife-vehicle encounters. Banff National Park was particularly interested in reducing bear-car collisions, which have been reduced by 50 to 100 percent in areas with the bridges .

Additionally, these bridges help ensure that the entire environment stays balanced, giving wildlife populations equal access to all parts of the park.

The success of this two-decade-long project has not gone unnoticed. Numerous other regions, inside and outside national parks, have prevented countless vehicle deaths with these bridges. Today, watching from the road and leaving these wildlife crossings alone is one of many easy ways tourists can be eco-friendly while traveling to national parks like Banff.

About Banff National Park’s Migration Bridges

  • First Migration Bridge Installed: 2000
  • Number of Migration Bridges in Banff National Park: 6 overpasses and 38 underpasses
  • Animals Using Banff National Park’s Migration Bridges: Grizzly Bears, Red Foxes, Elk, Moose, Boreal Toads, Lynx, Wolverines

With these eco-tourism initiatives, national parks around the world are helping preserve the environment and make the world a more hospitable place for both humans and nature.

Eco-Tourism Destinations Around The World That Should Be On Your Bucket List

From malaysia and philippines to sweden and iceland, here is a round-up of some of the best eco-tourism destinations around the world..

By: Ipsita Kabiraj Published: Jun 24, 2022 11:40 AM IST

Eco-Tourism Destinations Around The World That Should Be On Your Bucket List

Most of us are growing increasingly tired of living in concrete jungles and choosing eco-tourism destinations around the world to rejuvenate ourselves. While these places offer travellers clean air to breathe and calming environs full of lush greenery to relax in, they also serve as one of the best ways to spread awareness about the conservation of natural resources. By Ipsita Kabiraj.

According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), eco-tourism or sustainable tourism can be defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.”

As an eco-tourist, one can immerse themselves in pristine locations while taking part in the maintenance and protection of the region. Ecotourism also boosts employment by empowering locals with opportunities. It acts as a catalyst in encouraging conservation by garnering financial aid and allows economies to thrive without exploiting the local wildlife.

Being at one with nature doesn’t mean going slow and silent. Some of the best eco-tourism destinations in the world are a haven for adventure seekers as well. Swimming with sharks, adventure caving, snorkelling or witnessing the great migration — there’s no dearth of fun in eco-tourism.

And, the best part is you can do all this with reduced impacts of travelling and tourism on the environment, and without harming animals or ecosystems in the process. Such experiences are carefully curated for eco-travellers to experience the on-touristy untapped versions of the environment, while also enabling them to leave the place better than they found it.

Here are some of the best eco-tourism destinations around the world

Gothenburg, sweden.

Eco-tourism destinations: Sweden

This is the second-largest city in Sweden and is considered one of the top eco-tourism destinations globally. A majority of the former industrial port town’s public transport today runs off renewable energy, and over 90 per cent of the hotels are eco-certified. The city is surrounded by thick forests and offers vast breathing spaces in the form of parks, meadows, expansive cycling tracks as well as hiking routes.

Gunung Mulu National Park, Malaysia

Eco-tourism Destination

The national park is nestled on the island of Borneo in the State of Sarawak and is famous for its extensive cave networks and rich biodiversity. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to lofty peaks, deep gorges and serene rivers. The place is home to one of the unique geological formations in the world — like the Pinnacles — which are a forest of spires made of limestones. One can engage in activities such as hiking, adventure caving and canopy walking. Tour guides also engage visitors to take part in conserving the gorgeous natural resources of the park.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Eco-tourism destination: Galapagos island

Besides being one of the world’s richest destinations for biodiversity, this archipelago of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean is also famously home to a host of unique iguanas and lizards. The islands have a delicate ecosystem, comprising thousands of species of endemic and unusual plants and animals. The authorities practise low-impact tourism — only a limited number of visitors, accompanied by a registered guide, are allowed access on a day-to-day basis.

Interesting fact: Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was inspired by a visit to the Galápagos back in 1835.

Donsol and Peleliu, Philippines

Eco-tourism Destination

The metropolis of Donsol facilitates sustainable tourism by only allowing a limited number of tourists to sign up to swim with whale sharks, as locals try to preserve their population in the region. One can also experience scuba diving with manta rays. Similarly, Peleliu, another eco-tourism destination located to the east, is the best for kayaking. You can come across spinner dolphins and stingless jellyfish.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Eco-tourism destinations in the world: Serengeti National Park

Often considered a celebrity hotspot (with visitors including actor Will Smith, football star David Beckham and former US President Barack Obama), the Serengeti National Park is the oldest game reserve in Tanzania . The country has gone a long way in protecting its habitat by designating 25 per cent of its land for conservation.

Home to colossal herds of animals like zebras, gazelles and gnu, it is also the only place in Africa where land-animal migrations still take place. The unforgettable experience of witnessing the great migration should definitely make it to your bucket list. The local guides go out of their way to lay emphasis on the importance of wildlife preservation and ensure visitors cause the least disturbance to the ecosystem.

Þingvellir National Park, Iceland

eco park tourist places

Pronounced ‘thingvellir’, this national park is one of the most iconic (and visited) places on the Icelandic mainland. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers breathtaking views of mountains on three sides, Lake Þingvallavatn at one end, and lava fields dotted with lush grass on the other. You will have to see it to believe it.

To balance the tourist footfall, the park, which is managed by the environmental agency Umhverfisstofnun, focuses on the use of sustainable resources to maintain the region’s ecological purity as much as possible.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Eco-tourism destination: Great Barrier Reef

Arguably the world’s most famous and largest coral reef ecosystem, the Great Barrier Reef , has been under threat for a while now due to pollution, excess fishing and global warming.

The good news is that this home to diverse marine life, including 4,000 types of molluscs and 1,500 species of fish, is now on a slow path to recovery. The islands along the reef have taken it upon themselves to practise ecotourism in limited ways that help boost the economy and fund further conservation .

Koh Kong, Cambodia

Koh Kong Cambodia

Cambodia is one of the popular eco-tourism destinations in South East Asia. The province of Koh Kong, located near the border with Thailand , is a hidden gem and boasts of dense mangrove forests, crystal-clear rivers, tropical islands with virgin beaches and rich biodiversity, including several threatened species.

While here, visitors can enjoy the pristine location by opting for eco-friendly hotels and sustainable restaurants, as well as engage in activities such as day trekking, kayaking and snorkelling.

Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica

Eco-tourism Destination

With tons of eco-tourism activities, Costa Rica is a haven for conscious travellers. The country has also reserved a quarter of its landmass as protected land, national parks and reserves. The Monteverde (meaning “green mountain”) cloud forest reserve is home to several endemic animal and plant species, accounting for more than 100 species of mammals, 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles, as well as 400 species of birds.

The Burren, Ireland

Eco-tourism Destination

The place derives its name from the Irish word “Boíreann” meaning a rocky place. One of the unique locations on the island nation, The Burren is home to 70 per cent of Ireland’s native plant species and boasts of a rugged, moon-like landscape and a diversified ecosystem.

Formed millions of years ago, it is also one of the largest and most accessible Karst regions in the world. The Burren Ecotourism Network works to ensure the sustainable development of its communities, environment and heritage. The Burren National Park offers some great adventure activities like guided walking trails, imparting education about nature and a glimpse of some stunning wildlife.

Sundarbans, India

Eco-tourismt spots: Sunderbans

One of the largest mangrove forests in the world, the delta of the Sundarbans is formed by the confluence of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. It is spans India and Bangladesh.

One of the most far-flung destinations in the world, the Sundarbans National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its plethora of exotic flora and fauna. Home to the majestic Royal Bengal Tigers, the river labyrinths are also the natural habitat of beautiful kingfishers, estuarine crocodiles, the endangered endemic River Terrapin and other animals.

Visitors can explore the creeks on boats and support the locals in conserving nature by going plastic-free and buying local produce like honey and jute products.

Thimphu, Bhutan

Eco-tourism: Thimphu

The mountainous Asian paradise that is one of the best eco-tourism destinations is Bhutan’s capital city Thimphu. Located in the lap of nature, the place is surrounded by the striking Himalayan mountains and beautiful rivers, making it seem right out of a postcard.

Owing to its high sustainable and environmental standards, Bhutan received an honorary mention by World Population Review in its list of happiest countries in the world in 2022. The country has so much greenery that all the carbon it produces gets easily absorbed.

Thimphu is also the cultural capital and offers a wide range of sustainable activities like hiking at the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, soaking up views at Buddha Point and seeing the national animal, takin, at Takin Preserve. One can also visit the Textile Museum or Choki Art School to learn about the ways Bhutan preserves its indigenous handicraft.

Eco-highlight: Nature conservation over mass tourism

On Lord Howe Island , a two-hour flight from Sydney , 75 percent of the island’s vegetation remains intact and a marine park protects the diverse underwater life. The island is progressing towards Eco Destination certification and limits the number of visitors to 400 at one time to prevent overcrowding. The island is a haven for over 130 permanent and migratory bird species. Seabirds nest here in their hundreds of thousands, and this special bird bonanza is best experienced on a tour with respected nature guide Ian Hutton OAM.

Top 10 Destinations for Ecotourism in Europe

eco park tourist places

The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as: “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.”

Although mostly associated with any form of tourism that involves nature, Ecotourism is more than that. Ecotourism is, first of all, about sustainable travel and minimizing physical, social and behavioural impact.

More and more destinations are available to us; they are easily accessible and affordable to more and more people. With international flight prices being sometimes as low as the price of a local bus ticket, it’s no wonder! Unaware of the impact that these trips can have on our environment, we are drawn to start and complete our travelling bucket list sooner rather than later.

Ecotourism is also about the experience of both visitors and hosts. What we leave behind is a very important aspect of our travels. We travel because we can, because we want to, because it’s our dream, but do we provide any value to our hosts other than contributing financially?

Does promoting ecotourism defeat the purpose of having a low environmental impact? Maybe, if you think of tourism as being one of the industries that have the worst environmental impact and a very high carbon footprint. Ecotourism is the good side of tourism because it protects natural habitats and pristine ecosystems. It also helps the economy but not at the expense of the local environment.

There are a lot of great destinations for Ecotourism all around the world and this is a list of the best ones in Europe.

1. Boginj Lake - Slovenia

eco park tourist places

Slovenija is the Europe's top ecoturism destination. In 2016 this country was the world's first green destination. Slovenija has a lot to offer, from breathtaking mountains to crystal clear lakes. No to mention it's 60% covered in forests.

Triglav National Park, Bohinjsko Jezero 4265 Slovenia

Boginj Lake gives you the feeling of landing in a magical place, almost unreal, with its crystal clear waters and surrounded by mountains.  There is no right season or time to visit, the view is stunning no matter the season. Trails around the lake can sometimes be busy, but 100m up, on what is marked as the "hunter trail" you can have a better experience, that of hiking above one of the most beautiful places in the world. The usual route starts at Ribcev Laz and goes all the way up to Vogel cable car station, after crossing the Savica river. It will take you 3 hours to get back to your starting point, but that's if you don't stop for any photos or to admire the surrounding beauty.

Where to stay

For a complete eco-tourism experience, stay at the Bohinj Eco Hotel , the first ecological hotel in Slovenia. The hotel's restaurant serves Slovenian and international cuisine, as well as special vegetarian and low-calorie dishes prepared with eco-certified ingredients of local origin.

2. Lake of Fire - Azores

eco park tourist places

Lake of Fire or "Lagoa do Fogo" is a lake formed in a crater in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.

Miradouro da Serra Barrosa Agua de Pau, Sao Miguel Portugal

Lake of Fire is your perfect ecotourism destination if you are into stunning views and hiking. And since you're reading this, you probably are.  The weather changes very quickly so if you want to take that perfect photo, better hurry, because it can get cloudy and dark really fast. Works the other way around too: if you're disapointed of arriving just to see some foggy mountains and no lake, give it an hour or 2 and the view can completely change. Swimming is forbidden here, but a 40 minutes drive from here can take you to Caldeira Velha where you can relax at the thermal baths.

Enjoy a relaxing stay at Santa Barbara Eco Beach Resort and get direct access to the beach, a beach bar, a swimming pool and a restaurant. The hotel offers various options for guests wishing to take a relaxing break. It is possible to rent bicycles and cars and the area is popular for surfing and bodyboarding.

3. Lake Prags - Italy

eco park tourist places

There's so much beauty in this country, it's almost unfair for the others. There's no going wrong with visiting this country, because no matter where you are, there's always something to see.

39030 Braies Italy

Lake Prags, or Lago Braies is part of the Italian Alps and offers a stunning scenery: Dolomites mountains reflecting in a clear, blue water. Walking around the whole lake is a must and it takes up to an hour one way, which makes it the perfect destination for hiking for all ages.  In the summer or on weekends it can get really crowdy, so make sure you visit during the off-peak season for a worthy experience. This place has also become one of Instagram's influencer's top spots.

To get the full experience, rent a rowboat right at the entrance. It doesn't come cheap at £23/hour but it's worth every penny.

You can stay only metres away from the lake at Hotel Lago di Braies and make sure you book a room with a view of the lake. This hotel gets bonus points for available free bikes and free permits for fishing in the lake!

4. Itinerari d'Entremesaigues - Andorra

Andorra Itinerari d'Entremesaigues ecotourism destination

Andorra is a microstate, located between France and Spain and most of it is mountainous. It takes about half an hour to walk from the capital, La Vela, to get to the beginning of a trail that takes you to Escaldes-Engordany.

Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror, Escaldes-Engordany AD700 Andorra

Itinerari d'Entremesaigues offers you fantastic views of the river and mountains. It takes about 1.5 hours to hike a 4km long trail with a 280m height difference. There are many routes you could take and that's the beauty of this place.

The valley was once home for various agricultural and farming practices and you can still encounter ruins of shepherds huts, concentraded more on the Pleta de l’Estall Serrer and the Tancat de Graus area. They used to be a temporary refuge for sheperds, like a second home. Also, The Bordes (barns made of dry stone) are a statement of what once used to be a territory dedicated to agriculture. They served as a shelter but also as a place to keep farming essentials.

With the increase of tourism in the valley, many refuges have turned into places where hikers could rest for one night. Claror, Perafita, Fontverd, Riu dels Orris and L’Illa in the parish of Encamp are in the valley and Prat Primer, Els Agols, Ensagents and Montmalús are in the buffer zone.

Hotel Arbella is a fabulous and cyclists friendly hotel, only a 14 minutes drive from the starting point for Escaldes-Engordany. or 10 minutes to the capital city, La Vela.

5. Connemara Ireland - Conemara National Park

eco park tourist places

Ireland is the land of legends and fairy tales. There's beauty everywhere you go, and you might feel tempted to believe that you could encounter a magical creature somewhere around the corner.

Galway County, Ireland

Opened all year round, Conemara National Park is spread through 2000 hectares of woodlands, mountains and grassland. There is a lot to discover here, so make sure you plan to spend at least 3 days here.

Start your trip from Galway, a small but vibrant city and go through Maam Cross and the wooden town of Maam. You will find beauty everywhere around you and Maam Cross is one of hikers favourite spots for taking incredible photos. It is also very popular among cyclists.

A shorter route for those with less time on hand is starting from Clifden, then going to Sky Road all the way to Inagh Valley. Sky Road is one of the most popular places in the area and it offers stunning views from the highest point car park. The road is very narrow and it can be challenging to drive close distance from a car coming from the opposite direction. Especially if you're afraid of heights.

Add Kylemore Abbey to your itinerary and be amazed of one of the most beautiful castles in all Ireland.

Stay at the Glenlo Abbey Hotel and dine like never before at The Pullman Restaurant aboard the Orient Express, a historic Pullman train where the carriages have been transformed into a restaurant.

6. Nera Gorges - Romania

Best ecotourism destination Nera Gorges landscape

Romania is a place of untamed beauty and wilderness. The quality of the roads has always been an issue here, but that somehow proved to be good thing when it comes to nature preservation. There's plenty of remote villages and stunning mountains to visit.

Nera Gorges National Park, Caras-Severin County, Romania

Following the path of the Nera river, Nera Gorges are the perfect nature escape. It's not easy to get here, mostly because the quality of the roads is not the best. But once you start this journey it will all be worth it. To hike the whole route, it will take a full 8 hours and it can be exhausting. Most experienced hikers would normally take a camping gear with them and camp at Vogiun's Shed. Start in Carbunari, a small old miner's village and make your way down through the narrow abrupt path to the Devil's lake. The lake is so blue that it almost looks unreal and legends say it got it's name from a deal with the devil made by a shepherd.

One of the most spectacular views is probably the Tunnels, which no one knows when or by whom they were built. There are three tunnels you have to go through if you want to go ahead and finish the hike and one of them is often flooded.

Finish the hike in Sasca-Romana, but before that, there will be one more obstacle to cross: a suspended moving bridge that terrifies tourists.

To get the full experience, camp somewhere along the river. It's free and very much worth it. If the weather doesn't allow it, check-in at La Vechea Moara (translates as The Old Mill) and get the experience of living like a local.

7. Egirdir - Turkey

egirdir lake view

Many people travel to Turkey to visit Istanbul or Cappadocia, but the majestic country has tons of interesting places . Eğirdir is one of them.

Isparta, Lake District, Turkey

Eğirdir is a place where sports, history, and tradition meet. Surrounded by a beautiful lake, the small town has been a must-visit spot for those who love trekking, ancient ruins, beautiful mountain scenery, and traditional old villages. St. Paul's trail crosses Eğirdir. The ancient path is full of history and you need more than a month to finish it and it offers everything hikers love. If you like ancient history, the ruins of Sagalassos are very close to the lake. The ancient Roman city was founded in 1200 BC. The remaining structure includes an amphitheatre and a carpet of flowers that grow every end of April while she's wandering around. Sagalassos is just one of many ancient ruins surrounding Eğirdir, such as Adada, Antioch, and Men Tapinagi. If you love nature and particularly lavender, apples, and roses, you will love Eğirdir. The production of such products is iconic in the regions. Çayköy village, in Eğirdir, is full of apple trees and you can spend time in a traditional Turkish teahouse. Another magnificent spot in Eğirdir is the Kovada National Park, a majestic place of a picnic at the lake or you can continue a little further to Çandır Canyon National Park crossing by castle ruins and old trading routes. Both places are sumptuous to be visiting biking. Do you fancy skiing? The Davraz Ski resort at Mount Davraz offers amazing trails for alpine skiing, ski touring, Nordic ski, snowboarding, hiking, climbing, and paragliding a fraction of the cost in other places such as European countries. We could spend hours writing about all the fantastic activities you can do in Eğirdir, cooking classes, sailing, and canoeing climbing the Sivri mountain, water sports, fishing, visiting traditional villages, nomadic markets, oak forests, cannons, rose fields, relaxing in traditional Turkish baths, go mushroom picking.

Just a few steps to the lakefront, Fulya Pension is a family-run guest house, located on the St. Paul trail where you can enjoy fantastic views over the lake.

8. Lysefjord - Finland

Lysefjord view from above

Everyone knows Finland is mostly famous for its fjords - a deep, narrow and elongated sea or lakedrain, with steep land on three sides. Norwegian fjords were formed during several ice ages by the giant glacier tongues.

Ryfylke area, Rogaland county, Norway

Lysefjord offers a spectacular view from above 740m of sea level. To get there you will need to climb no more and no less than 4444 steps. It will normally take around 2 hours and yes! it will be exhausting. This is the world's longest wooden staircase.

Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) is a must-see plateau and offers an incredible view towards the Lysefjord, one of the best views in Norway. It takes around 2.5 hours to get there from Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. There is also the option of enjoying the view from a different perspective, by going on one of the Fjord Cruises available.

In 2018, Lysefjord received the certificate of Sustainable Destination, to celebrate the continuous efforts of fighting the battle of reducing the negative impact tourism has on the environment. Everything here seems to be in direct harmony with nature.

Stay at the closest location to the Pulpit Rock, at Preikestolen BaseCamp and get up early for the hike of your life! A variety of popular activities are available in the area around Preikestolen BaseCamp, including hiking and fishing.

9. Gozo - Malta

Gozo port

If Paradise was a place on earth, Malta must be it! Malta has eveything you can hope for: unique landscapes, clear sea water and amazing food. The Maltese are famous for their hospitality and everyone speaks english there because Malta was part of the British Empire for 160 years.

Gozo Island, Malta

Gozo aims to become an eco-friendly island by 2020. EcoGozo is a vision the people of Gozo have for the transformation of their island into a sustainable reality.

Gozo is easily accessible by ferry from Cirkewwa port and it takes around 30 minutes.  Once you reach the port of Mgarr, try to get further away from the crowded areas around the port and discover the real beauty of this island. The Gozitans do not identify as being Maltese and some might take offence in being called that. They have their own dialect that maltese don't understand.

One of the most interesting things to visit here are the Xewejni salt pans, belonging to the Cini family who have harvested sea salt for over 150 years.

The number one tourist attraction in Gozo was The Azure Window, or Dwejra, until 2017 when it collapsed due to centuries of pressure and erosion from the ocean.

Botanica B&B is absolutely stunning! It offers spacious rooms, a pool and an outdoor garden. If you find yourself willing to escape this piece of Paradise and enjoy a night out, it will only take a 5 minutes stroll to the city centre.

10. Bristol - United Kingdom

bristol view of the bridge

South West region, England

Bristol is the top eco-tourism destination in the UK and was voted European Green Capital in 2015. With more than 450 parks in this city, it has more parks for its size than any other British cities.

The best time to enjoy the treats of Bristol is during the summer months when you can take part in numerous free festivals that happen here every year. One of the best is the International Balloon Fiesta, held normally in August.

Bristol has a lot to offer: from amazing street art and a good variety of places to enjoy delicious vegan food to rolling green hills and thick forests. It also has it's own currency, called the Bristol Pound, which seems to be a great solution to encourage residents to shop local.

Cycle your way through the city on excellent and long cycle lanes and get the full experience.

The Beech House is an exquisite and stylish apartment complex, less than 20 minutes’ walk from the city centre and  10 minutes away from the University of Bristol.

It is a pioneer in the fields of drama, arts, theatre and literature with several Nobel laureates contributing to its culture. Life Stories by Veena Patil

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most. While places have taken care of themselves, here’s my podcast, which I consider to be a great platform, through which I can share some interesting stories I live and love on a daily basis with all you wonderful people out there. I hope you enjoy the journey... Let’s go, celebrate life!

Getting there (location)

The 40-acre forest reserve that hosts the Aboretum which belongs to the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council who leased it to a mining firm in the early twentieth century for surface mining but later given to another company known as African Products Department for rubber and cocoa plantations in 1917.

After the company left, two British bought the park on which they built a guest house in 1935. The guesthouse is currently serving as the official residence for the Vice Chancellor of the University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies; an institution established by the Okyehene, Amoatia Ofori Opanin II .

In 1946, the facility was then acquired by the Plant Genetic Resource and Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) which has been managing it ever since.

The forest reserve has some of the rare tree species including Garcinia Kola, known locally as Twepea, reputed for its health benefits. Garcinia kola is said to be used in many tropical countries to fight infectious diseases and also known to possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

Other tropical tree species found at the centre include Okure, mostly used for dugout canoes as well as the Alpha and Omega trees used for the local sponge (sapowie).
