1,500 kilometres from the Portuguese coast, nine islands spring up out of the Atlantic Ocean. Highlights - Azores

The Azores are very like Scotland, with their green pastures, meadows and lakes reminiscent of the Highlands. But the Azores are actually in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. These nine islands enjoy a temperate climate thanks to the Gulf Stream and are among the treasures that have prospered in this vast body of water. Below, we tell you what to do in the Azores .

Highlights - Azores

Essential - Azores

An Atlantic archipelago less often visited than Madeira or the Canaries, the Azores are paradise for nature lovers and those who enjoy calm destinations that aren't too touristy. Here is some useful information to help you prepare for your trip to the Azores .

Essential Azores

Explore Azores

Five sites to visit in the Azores

cruise azores portugal

Enjoy a geothermal tour - São Miguel Island

São Miguel is home to the financial capital of the Azores: Ponta Delgada . It has the memorable Portas do Mar leisure area and promenade, the lovely romantic António Borges Garden and São Brás Fort: a reminder of its past as a key stop-off port on Atlantic routes. But São Miguel is also famous for Furnas Valley . With over 20 thermal springs, this area is one of the biggest geothermal towns in the world. It would be impossible to miss out on the Sete Cidades volcanic lakes and Lagoa do Fogo . The views of these lakes with craters edged by fields and lush vegetation are truly striking.

Get a photo of São Lourenço Bay - Santa Maria Island

Get a photo of São Lourenço Bay - Santa Maria Island

81 kilometres south of São Miguel, Santa Maria is known for its hilly terrain and incredible São Lourenço Bay. The bay looks like half a crater and is a sea front unlike any other covered with terrace-grown vines. From afar, they look like they are tumbling into the sea. A photogenic spot! Once on Santa Maria, it's worth taking a detour to the little village of Anjos and the Ermida Senhora dos Anjos Chapel. This is where Christopher Columbus is meant to have attended mass during his return voyage from America.

Hike in the volcanoes - Faial Island

Hike in the volcanoes - Faial Island

Faial may be nicknamed the "Blue Island", but it is still volcanic. There is nothing like a hike to see this for yourself. In the west of the island, the Capelo Peninsula is the starting point for a path that goes around the Cabeço Verde volcanic cone with views of the other cones like Cabeço do Fogo and Morro de Castello Branco. Along the path, the Furna Ruim lava cave (55 metres deep) and the view of Capelinhos Volcano are sure to make an impression. Indeed, the volcano was the last to erupt in the Azores from 1957 to 1958!

Tour Horta - Faial Island

Tour Horta - Faial Island

Having explored Faial's volcanic side, it's time for a tour of its capital, Horta . Now a calm little town, it used to be an important trading post between the 16th and 18th centuries. Caravels and other galleons amassed in its port as they prepared to cross the Atlantic. Everyone knew about Horta: not stopping here brought bad luck to sailors, as its marina indicates. It is covered with frescoes painted by all those who wanted protection during their voyage. The Scrimshaw Museum has a collection of sculptures depicting whaling scenes: a reminder that the Azores were also a key hunting ground in the 19th and start of the 20th century.

Admire the view of the Caldeira - Faial Island

Admire the view of the Caldeira - Faial Island

This must be one of the most bucolic walks in the Azores. With its highest point nearly 1000 metres, the Caldeira is a must-see natural site on Faial. There is a path around it that allows you to see the bottom 365 metres below. With vertical walls covered in short vegetation, it offers a stunning panorama on one side. On the other, the viewpoint on the hill covered with blue hydrangeas (in the right season) and the gentle slope towards the ocean is absolutely amazing.

Get away from it all. Simply that - Graciosa Island

Get away from it all. Simply that - Graciosa Island

Nicknamed the "eighth Canary Island", Graciosa (the "Gracious") is the northernmost island in the central Azores. It is also one of the most unspoilt and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve . Here, the vines and fields are surrounded by low walls made of basalt. This black rock is everywhere: in villages and in nature. Timeworn cliffs, screes, peaks...it contrasts with the fields, the surrounding natural environment and the clear water which, in the sunlight, takes on turquoise hues.

Enjoy a special swim - São Jorge Island

Enjoy a special swim - São Jorge Island

A cliff emerges from the water. This is what São Jorge looks like, being 54 kilometres long, 6.9 kilometres wide and 1000 metres tall. People often feel that the island's slopes — covered with pastures and hydrangeas in the right season — seem to drop straight into the ocean. But what makes São Jorge really amazing is its fajãs : flat expanses of land on the sea front and the cliffside. They are the result of lava flows going into the sea or landslides. They also have natural pools tempting you to swim in an extraordinary natural setting.

Go and see Portugal's highest peak - Pico Island

Go and see Portugal's highest peak - Pico Island

Often hidden in the clouds, Mount Pico appears in all its glory when the mist does clear. This volcanic cone is 120,000 years old and the highest peak in Portugal. It reaches 2351 metres and dominates picturesque landscapes including the expansive vineyards edged by drystone walls which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Access is via a red-earth path. The colour contrasts are striking and hikers are sure to feel fulfilled by their achievement!

cruise azores portugal

Unique features

Green and grey. Nature and mineral surroundings. Visitors to Pico don't always initially understand the landscape when they go to the island's vineyards . They contain currais , as the locals call them: low stone walls that protect the vines from sea winds and spray. This method dating back to the 15th century reflects just how ingenious and careful successive generations of growers have been in their work. The landscapes were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Essential phrases

Hello/Good evening: Bom dia / Boa noite Goodbye: Adeus Welcome: Bem-vindo Excuse me/Please: Desculpa-me / por favor Thank you: Muito obrigado Yes/no: Sim / Não How are you?: Como vai você ? Very well, thanks, and you?: Muito bem, obrigado, e você ? My name is...: Chamo me...

Fish is abundant in the Azores and is cooked all ways. Whether grilled, in a matelote or a soup, it is always fresh and delicious. The tasty tuna also deserves a special mention. Octopus and seafood are very much appreciated too. As for meat, on São Miguel Island, they make one of the most delicious and unusual dishes: cozido das furnas . This is a kind of stew with pork, cabbage, chicken, veal, sausage, lard, turnip, carrots, potatoes and chilli. Everything is cooked by putting the pot into a hole dug in the ground and covered with earth. Geothermal energy does the rest!

Myths and legends

The Azores are among the islands that encourage the wildest of theories about the location of the legendary Atlantis mentioned by Plato in his writings. Some say Madeira, the Azores, the Canaries and Cape Verde are actually the visible summits of this continent submerged during a volcanic eruption. In Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, Captain Nemo suggests Atlantis is in the Atlantic Ocean. However, there is no proof these hypotheses are accurate.

cruise azores portugal

In the spotlight

Until 1893, the town of Horta on Faial Island was mainly visited by sailors stopping off before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. However, from 1893, it became renowned thanks to the arrival of the first underwater telegraph cable connecting it to Lisbon, then to the United States, until 1969. This played an important role during the Second World War.

cruise azores portugal

Book. Stormy Isles traces the life of a young woman aged 20 in the Azores between 1917 and 1919, who is torn between her aristocratic education and feminist aspirations. Through this poetically written portrait, Azores author Vitorino Nemésio gives us insight into life on the archipelago and its magnificent landscapes at the start of the 20th century.

Music. The viola da terra is the typical Azores instrument. It looks like a guitar, except for the two little hearts that replace its cousin's usual rosette. The instrument is associated with saudade: Portuguese music known for its melancholy tunes.

Facts and figures

São Miguel Island is home to the only two European tea plantations: Chá Porto Formoso and Chá Gorreana. The old machinery at the latter attracts visitors and tastings showcase the subtleties of this tea produced in the Atlantic region.

Anyone that knows Ponta Delgada well wonders why cruise ships don’t call at this port more frequently. Is there much to do? Yes. Have you been to Ponta Delgada and didn't find anything appealing to enjoy? Could it be that you missed something? That's not surprising.

There are many things to do on the lovely island of São Miguel, where Ponta Delgada cruise port is. But, and this is a big but, most cruise lines rarely offer several of the most extraordinary attractions.

The port of Ponta Delgada (in the Azores, Portugal) is the gateway to a good number of stunning sites located between 3 and 28 miles (4,8 and 45 km) from the cruise piers and terminal.

Cruisers who like a stroll close to the port will discover a few charming sites near the piers. But you have to travel inland to enjoy spectacular landscapes. And unique gastronomic delights. For one-of-a-kind experiences, you must venture out to sea.

Ponta Delgada is a cruise port of call usually visited in Transatlantic and European Atlantic itineraries during the Spring-Summer season. As many as 149,000 passengers and over 140 cruise ships visited Ponta Delgada in 2019.

Ponta Delgada is very safe. The area around the port has a very pleasant character, is very clean and well maintained. The local population is friendly, polite and speak English very well. For those cruising with families, there are just a few exciting things for kids to do. Cruise passengers with walking difficulties will find it simple to wander around in Ponta Delgada on your own.

Where is Ponta Delgada cruise port

Ponta Delgada is in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, far from other cruise ports. Funchal (Madeira) and the other islands in the Azores are the only ports close by. The cruise port in Ponta Delgada is 900 miles (1450 km) West of Lisbon and 2570 miles (4,136 km) East of New York.

Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, Ponta Delgada is on the South Coast of the island of Sāo Miguel and, with a population of around 68,809, is the largest city of the Azores. The Azores is an archipelago with nine islands and Sāo Miguel, often referred to as the emerald green island thanks to its flora, is the largest. The island is 35.8 miles (62 km) long, and its maximum width is 9.8 miles (15.8 km).

Cruise ships dock in two distinct areas, both close to the historical downtown of Ponta Delgada. If you have been to Ponta Delgada before, you may be under the impression that cruise ships always dock by the Terminal Maritimo , which is where ships moor most of the time.

However, when more than two cruise ships call at Ponta Delgada it is possible to dock at the long pier (parallel to the city) that is also a breakwater.

The Terminal Maritimo , also known as Portas do Mar (Sea Doors), is on a modern complex with cafes, restaurants, and shops. It has a long pier for two large ships and is around 700 feet (200 meters) from the main avenue of the historical city.

This avenue along the harbor (Portuguese: Avenida do Infante Dom Henrique ), leads to the main square and heart of Ponta Delgada, another 700 feet (200 meters) farther west.

The breakwater pier is 0.85 miles long. It is used primarily by cargo ships and occasionally by cruise ships. It ends by an old fort (Forte de São Brás), and next to another major square in Ponta Delgada.

When cruise ships dock at the industrial pier, passengers are prohibited to walk to town if cargo is being unloaded. The good news is that a shuttle bus will be provided. The main cruise terminal is so close to the old city that a shuttle bus is not needed.

Cruise terminal services and amenities

Do not expect to find any amenities or services at the industrial pier. Except for cruise excursion buses and a few taxis. By contrast, cruise passengers will find in Terminal Maritimo the following services and amenities:

Be aware that cruise passengers will have to pass by x-ray scanners at the terminal to re-enter the ship.

Things to do in Ponta Delgada cruise port

The island of Sāo Miguel has quite a few highlights. But when cruisers ask "What is there to do in Ponta Delgada?" whale watching is undoubtedly the most spectacular experience you must enjoy in Ponta Delgada. Surprisingly, it is seldom mentioned and rarely offered.

Amazingly only a couple of cruise lines offer whale-watching excursions. It is mindboggling considering that the best time for whale-watching in the Azores is between May and September, precisely when cruise ships call at Ponta Delgada.

For those that are not thrilled or feel intimidated to encounter massive whales on a small boat, there are many scenic sights to marvel at and experiences to enjoy. Here are the top things to do on a cruise to Ponta Delgada:

  • Enjoy whale and dolphin watching
  • Marvel at Sete Cidades crater lakes
  • Visit the active geysers at the Furnas Valley
  • Explore Ribeira Grande town
  • Walk around Ponta Delgada historical center
  • Stroll through the Terra Nostra botanical gardens
  • Discover a pineapple plantation
  • Tour a tea plantation
  • Drive a 4WD through off the beaten track sites
  • Savor a cozido (stew) cooked in hot springs
  • Taste Azorean wines and cheeses
  • Shop for local handicrafts and gourmet delicacies

Luxury Cruises to the Azores

Discover the wild landscapes and rugged green coastline of the awe-inspiring island of Sao Miguel on an Azores cruise. A remote archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores are part of Portugal and are a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and those seeking rest and relaxation. The diverse topography of these islands provides plenty of outdoor activities, including whale watching, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Hike through volcanic craters, admire picturesque villages, and visit historical sites by the seaside on your visit to Ponta Delgada and its surroundings.

On an Azores cruise, you'll have the opportunity to explore the quaint cobblestone streets and centuries-old Portuguese plazas of Ponta Delgada. Step into the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres church to see its ornate, Baroque-style interior, or explore the beautiful Palace of the Governors, which was once the home of wealthy aristocrats. For sweeping views of Ponta Delgada and the Atlantic Ocean, take a cable car ride up to Monte Brasil. Uncover centuries of prized Portuguese culture and rich history on a luxury cruise to the Azores with Celebrity.

Azores Cruise Highlights

Awe-inspiring architecture.

Ponta Delgada's architecture represents many layers of Azorean maritime history and culture through its churches, historic homes, and squares. Walk through the plaza at the iconic Portas da Cidade (City Gates), a symbolic entrance to Ponta Delgada dating back to the 18th century. Explore the Parish Church of Sao Sebastiao with its beautiful tiled exterior, created in the baroque style. Then stroll along Rua de Santa Ana to see some of the oldest homes in Ponta Delgada.

Dramatic Nature

Soak in the Azores’ magnificent landscape at sites like the natural hot springs at Furnas, where you can relax in the therapeutic waters and even try food cooked in the thermal vapors. Hike the Caldeira das Sete Cidades, a volcanic crater that’s home to two lakes—one blue and one green. Pay a visit to the Gorreana Tea Plantation, the only tea farm in Europe, and learn about the tea-making process while enjoying views of the radiant, deep green valley below.

Azorean Culture

Due to their remote Atlantic location, far from mainland Portugal, and history as a stopping point for ships traveling between Europe and the Americas, the islands of the Azores have developed a unique culture. Make sure to try traditional local dishes like Cozido das Furnas, a meat and vegetable dish slow-cooked in the steam of a volcanic crater, and Queijadas da Vila, a cheesecake tart.

Your Azores cruise will sail to Ponta Delgada, a culturally-rich city full of historic Portuguese churches, baroque architecture, and dramatic natural surroundings. The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

cruise azores portugal

Praia di Vitoria, Terceira, Azores, Portugal

Praia da Vitória, in Portugal’s Azores archipelago, was one of two ports established when the island of Terceira was first settled in the mid-1400s. (The other is the island’s capital, Angra do Heroísmo.) Its small historic center has cobblestoned streets lined with ornately designed churches and imperiós , or shrines to the Holy Spirit, that are found only on Terceira. During the summer months, the town’s volcanic beaches are packed with sunbathers, and you can join diving and snorkeling trips to nearby reefs and shipwrecks. Praia da Vitória is also a great base for exploring the rest of the island. On the south coast, historic Angra do Heroísmo is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with 16th-century Portuguese architecture. Adventurous visitors can take a hike into Algar do Carvão, a lava tube in the center of the island with delicate cave formations and an underground lake. And wine lovers should plan a trip to the Wine Museum, in Biscoitos, to learn about the history of Azorean wines and how they are made today—samples, of course, included.

Cruises from/to Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal

Ponta delgada, azores, portugal cruise port.

Ponta Delgada is a city on the island of Sao Miguel, which is part of the Azores. The Azores are a part of Portugal and offer idyllic farmlands where cattle are raised and cheese and milk are produced. The islands are also rife with mountains and Ponta Delgado features the crater of a volcano. The land wasn’t settled until 1444 when Portuguese settlers first arrived. Over time, the island’s fresh fish and delightful produce made it a favorite for sailors making their way to and from Portugal. Summarized below are a few of the best activities to experience when cruising to Ponta Delgada, Portugal:

  • Take a drive to see the two lakes formed by the craters of volcanoes. One is a deep blue and the other is green.
  • Sit a spell and have some tea at a tea plantation on Sao Miguel. There are a couple of places that offer not only the beverage, but a tour of their factories as well.
  • Visit a market where you can find some of the local cheeses produced here, along with fresh pineapples that are harvested on the island.
  • Head to Blue Talassa for a chance to go whale watching – you might also see dolphins swimming along the coastline.

Cruising the World One Port at a Time

Best Things to Do in Ponta Delgada, Azores on a Day in Port

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: September 2, 2022

Almost every transatlantic crossing, except Queen Mary 2, (what I’ve named the “Atlantic Express”) pays a call at Ponta Delgada, on the island of Saõ Miguel, in the Azores.

More times than not, I hear people asking the ship’s shore excursion desk what are the best things to do in Ponta Delgada.

Here’s what I recommend to do in Ponta Delgada while visiting this middle of nowhere island!

What to do in Ponta Delgada Azores

While cruise lines constantly try to devise new and exciting shore excursions, it can seem pretty limited at first glance. An island in the middle of nowhere of which most people aren’t familiar. Surprisingly, there is actually quite a bit to do in Ponta Delgada.

What to Do in Ponta Delgada Azores

There’s a lot to see, taste and do in Ponta Delgada even from right where you dock. If you have mobility concerns, there’s a elevator to get from the embarkation level to the plaza and shops level.

All the restaurants offer free wifi with a meal. Great place to catch up with email and FaceTime. In addition to grabbing lunch, there’s a pharmacy, souvenir shops and clothing stores.

Walk a little ways past the port. Then cross the boulevard and climb up the narrow street to the cathedral. This is an easy uphill stroll to do in Ponta Delgada while the rest of the island is very hilly. Nice spot just to sit and relax and look out at the harbor.

If you decide to take a bus tour and head out into the verdant countryside, you will see some spectacular scenery. In the spring, colorful red and violet azaleas, yellow and deep purple-colored pansies are in bloom all around.

Where are the famous Hot Springs in Ponta Delgada?

First stop on your island tour might be to Caldeira Velha, a boiling hot sulphur spring. Watch your step. Seriously. Innocuous little puddles are actually small boiling cauldrons. Avoid those at all times. Saõ Miguel is bursting with incredible natural wonders. Definitely, not what you’d expect to do in Ponta Delgada. Or see!

Back on the bus. Another beautiful drive at dizzying heights. I had to close my eyes as we climbed higher and higher weaving along  narrow switchbacks. If there was a guard rail, I couldn’t see it from the bus window.

When you finally reach this point, you’ll forget about the cliff-hugging road to get here. This is highest lake on the island; the crystal blue water of magnificent Lagoa do Fogo, (Fire Lake).

Set in the crater of an extinct volcano, the lake was formed after an eruption in 1563. Thus the name Fire Lake. The lake is slightly less than 100′ deep but extends nearly two-miles across. We were so lucky to have sunshine up here. At this elevation, fog and mist are the rule, not the exception.

Ponta Delgada and Pineapples

Another interesting, and tasty, place to visit is the Arruda Pineapple Plantation! Yes…pineapples!

cruise azores portugal

Believe it or not, despite the pervasive fog and endless mist, Saõ Miguel is known for its pineapples! Go figure. Weather in the Azores is nothing like Hawai’i where you’d expect to find the best pineapples. But wait til you try one of these.

You’ll be handed a pamphlet about pineapple growing and go on a short tour of the greenhouse (a very short tour!) with an even shorter explanation on growing pineapples in the Azores. Apparently it has to do with the volcanic soil, similar to the abundance of lush lemon trees in Sicily under the gaze of Mt. Etna, I’d guess.

It’s a quirky little tour, but worth a visit. Be sure to buy a little souvenir bottle of pineapple liqueur to bring home.

Time to head back into town. Take note of this three-arch structure. It’s the threshold to Ponta Delgada, the Portas de Cidades.

What to do in Ponta Delgada

Built in 1753, these were once the official Doors of the City of Ponta Delgada and located on the waterfront. The iconic structure was moved to Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square in 1952 when this area was developed.

Just takin’ a rest…

cruise azores portugal

Time for a late lunch. Or an early dinner if your ship is docked through the evening. I walked to Restaurante Adega Regional from the harbor.

cruise azores portugal

No reservations needed, especially at this early dinner time. First up, a bottle of chilled Azorean wine. Along with pineapple plantations, the Azores have become a prominent wine producer.

Vineyards thrive in the volcanic soil as well as from the ever-present warming winds and high humidity caused by the Gulf Stream.

cruise azores portugal

White wines from the Azores are made primarily from Arinto grapes. Smaller quantities are produced using Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico grapes. The Verdelho that I had was semi-sweet and went very well with my dinner, and especially with the cheese.

From wondering what in the heck to do, to realizing that your day went by in a blink. If your ship leaves the island before sunset, head out on deck for sailaway. The coastline of this volcanic beauty of an island is worth battling the wind to get a good photo.

I’m already looking forward to my return. Now that I know the best things to do in Ponta Delgada, I can head out in search of more adventures in the Azores.

I still remember those beautiful stone sidewalks from my first stop there. Later we took a tour of the island but it’s the sidewalks I remember best.
