Live reviews
Everything Pharrell Williams touches seems to turn to gold, musically speaking, not least of all N.E.R.D, the mega-platinum selling hip hop-rap-pop crossover band that he fronted for over a decade. The band formed from Williams and Chad Hugo (aka production superduo The Neptunes) teaming up with drummer Shae Hayley in 2001, and since then their hit singles such as 'Rockstar', 'Maybe', and 'She Wants To Move', show the funky soulfulness of their bass-driven beats and have firmly secured their popularity.
For all their slick production and genre-hopping creativity, what makes N.E.R.D truly incredible to see live is the sheer, bouncing energy they bring, feeding off their audience to create an electrifying gig experience. Their songs are unmistakably catchy and guarantee to set crowds a-hopping, such as the set staples from their first album 'In Search Of...', such as the uplifting 'Run To The Sun', and the dirty basslines of 'Lapdance'.
When I saw N.E.R.D a few years ago at Brixton Academy, London, they were nothing short of incredible. The hyped-up atmosphere and the musical force of a full live band, teamed with Williams' charisma as a frontman, made the show one of the most fun and exciting I have ever been to. As an extra-special ending to their set, the band invited hundreds of female fans up onto the stage to groove alongside them for their encore, and you could tell it was out of the pure love of the energy from playing live and interacting with their audience. Seeing N.E.R.D live will more than likely surprise you, and certainly will never be a disappointment.

Nowadays Pharrell Williams is known for being a hot-shot, chart-topping producer or the genius behind ‘Happy.’ However, in 2000, he was part of a group known as N.E.R.D. Taking the production know-how he and childhood friend and musical partner-in-crime Chad Hugo had from their other project, The Neptunes, they got into the studio and dropped four albums that spawned a number of hits including ‘Lapdance,’ ‘Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom) and ‘Spaz.’ They have played around the world and also supported Kanye West and the Gorillaz on their tours.
Because of the high energy that N.E.R.D. bring to the stage, they can play any venue and still come up with the same result. Whether playing the smaller clubs in their Virginia Beach hometown or an outdoor stage by the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight, they bring the party wherever they go. The show brings the band, a DJ set up and Shay Haley, who serves as N.E.R.D.’s third member. With the combination of rock beats, a funky bass and turntables, it’s hard to throw the group into a genre, but at this point, that doesn’t really matter because even the wallflowers who hard bust a move get their grooves on to N.E.R.D. And while Pharrell might not have been donning that infamous cowboy hat, he’s got so much swag that any other accessory would be a bonus.
When No one Ever Really Dies, better known as N.E.R.D performed at UC Riverside’s annual Heat Music Festival, they attracted a ton of people to their stage; including me, and it was definitely a worthwhile experience.
Unlike the rest of the crowd, I really didn’t know their songs, especially since it was my friends idea to come to this set, in fact I didn’t know any of their songs. BUT…they really knew how to hype up the crowd, even though most of the crowd were already fans of N.E.R.D. The duo, consisting of Pharrell and Chad Hugo, had a large hype group that seemingly covered the entire stage. With little effort, they got the crowd moving for their song “Spaz,” swinging their arms and rapping along with them. They kept the energy going while performing “You Know What” and “Rockstar.”
In retrospect I’m really glad that I saw them live, because when I went back to listen to their studio sessions it just wasn’t the same. The amount of excitement that they add to their live versions really takes the songs to a whole different level. Also, the performance was truly in Pharrell fashion, giving everything he’s got because it’s what he loves doing most.

Pharrell confirms new N.E.R.D. albums are in the works
The award-winning producer shared he's done a dozen new tracks for The Neptunes side project in Paris
Pharrell Williams has confirmed he's working on new N.E.R.D. music.
Pharrell said he's recently "ended up doin’ 12 N.E.R.D records" in Paris in a new interview with Tyler, The Creator for GQ magazine. He described the new material for The Neptunes side project band with Chad Hugo and Shay Haley as having "big choruses, but you know, out of nowhere, I’ll just come out of nowhere with the three-bar, crazy-nuts chords that go three-bar to four-bar to eight-bar."
"This is like that feeling that I felt when we made [2001 album] 'In Search Of…'", Pharrel continued, referring to the group's debut LP, which preceded their chart-topping 2003 album 'Fly or Die'. "I won’t sit here and tell you that they were hits. I knew it was different, and I knew there won’t be nothing out there like this. But I’m talking about the feeling."
The award-winning artist also described what sounds fans can look forward to on the in-progress productions: "I want to use chords I never used before, and not just the dreamy ones. The ones that I’ve never done, that I fuckin’ hated. But using them in ways to get to other chords where the changes are such a release. And then, lyrically, the harmonies here…all the songs just have rainbow harmonies."
N.E.R.D.'s most recent releases are the 2018 singles 'Don't Do It' with Kendrick Lamar and 'Lemon' with Rihanna and Drake. The Neptunes (Williams and Hugo) released a single with Jay-Z called ' Entrepreneur ' in 2020.
Earlier this spring and summer, Pharrell collaborated with Virginia gospel choir Voices Of Fire for ' Joy (Unspeakable) '. He also worked with Kaytranada and Aminé's joint project KaytrAminé on the ' 4EVA ' single.
In February, Pharrell was announced as the late Virgil Abloh's successor as Louis Vuitton Men's Creative Director . Last year, he linked up with Calvin Harris, Justin Timberlake and Halsey on the ' Stay With Me ' single and with Tyler, The Creator and 21 Savage on ' Cash In Cash Out '.

N.E.R.D. Teams Up With PLEASURES for a Range of Collaborative Graphic Tees
Arriving just in time for pharrell’s something in the water festival..
It’s a big week for Pharrell as he’s just a day away from hosting his annual Something in the Water music festival in his hometown of Virginia Beach where artists like Kid Cudi , Lil Wayne , Lil Uzi Vert , Kehlani and more have been tapped to perform. And to stir up some excitement over the festival, he’s partnering with various brands to create special merchandise like this forthcoming N.E.R.D. x PLEASURES range of graphic tees.
The capsule is titled “Tape You,” which makes perfect sense considering that a bulk of the imagery that is tossed onto the various tees reference throwback technologies that were often used during the prime era of N.E.R.D. — the hip hop/rock band that was comprised of Pharrell , Chad Hugo and Shay Haley . Two of the tees are designed with cassette tape graphics that are being held by robotic hands and feature the band’s name written on tape while a PLEASURES hit rests on the bottom. The back of these pieces feature speckled details and an additional PLEASURES hit. The other duo of shirts is emblazoned with an old computer that features the back of a man’s head on the screen and N.E.R.D. branding up top while the back is adorned with the brand’s signature brain logo.

2024 SEC Women's Tournament scores, results, bracket: South Carolina wins title after brawl with LSU in final
The gamecocks remain undefeated on the season.
South Carolina won its second consecutive SEC Tournament title after a 79-72 win over LSU. Emotions were running high throughout Sunday's game, and they culminated in a brawl late in the fourth quarter that saw multiple players ejected for leaving the bench.
"We've always talked about it. Never leave the bench," South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said after the game. "Never get too high with the highs or low with the lows. It is hard when you're playing … your emotions get the best of you. It's unfortunate that the players who were ejected can't be part of the celebration."
During the incident, South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso shoved LSU's Flau'jae Johnson. Cardoso was consequently ejected for fighting and will not be allowed to play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
South Carolina freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley led all scorers in the title game with a career-high 24 points, going 8-of-12 from the field and hitting four 3-pointers. Aneesah Morrow led LSU with 19 points.
The championship win means South Carolina will be entering the NCAA Tournament with a perfect 32-0 record. Only nine teams have ever been crowned national champions after an undefeated season.

For years, a mysterious company has been buying farmland on the outskirts of Silicon Valley, eventually putting together a plot twice the size of San Francisco.
At every step, those behind the company kept their plans for the land shrouded in secrecy. Conor Dougherty, an economics reporter at The Times, figured out what they were up to.
On today’s episode
Conor Dougherty , an economics reporter for The New York Times.
Background reading
Tech industry investors spent roughly $900 million buying land to build a dream city in a rural part of the Bay Area.
In Solano County, Calif., a who’s who of tech money is trying to build a city from the ground up. But some of the locals whose families have been there for generations don’t want to sell the land .

This International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023, join UN Women and the United Nations in celebrating under the theme DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality .
Women make up only 22 per cent of artificial intelligence workers globally.
A global analysis of 133 AI systems across industries found that 44.2 per cent demonstrate gender bias.
A survey of women journalists from 125 countries found that 73 per cent had suffered online violence in the course of their work.
From the earliest days of computing to the present age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, women have made untold contributions to the digital world in which we increasingly live. Their accomplishments have been against all odds, in a field that has historically neither welcomed nor appreciated them.
Today, a persistent gender gap in digital access keeps women from unlocking technology’s full potential. Their underrepresentation in STEM education and careers remains a major barrier to their participation in tech design and governance. And the pervasive threat of online gender-based violence—coupled with a lack of legal recourse—too often forces them out of the digital spaces they do occupy.
At the same time, digital technology is opening new doors for the global empowerment of women, girls and other marginalized groups. From gender-responsive digital learning to tech-facilitated sexual and reproductive healthcare, the digital age represents an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate all forms of disparity and inequality.
This 8 March, we are calling on governments, activists and the private sector alike to power on in their efforts to make the digital world safer, more inclusive and more equitable. Facing a multiplicity of global crises, we have a chance to create a better future—not just for women and girls, but for all humanity and all life on Earth. Join us.
Get started today by sharing visuals, messaging and more from our IWD social media package . And tune in to the UN Observance of International Women’s Day at 10 am ET on 8 March.
