Vornado Recalls Steamfast and Brookstone Travel Steam Irons Due to Fire, Burn and Shock Hazards

The power cord can become damaged near the cord bushing, which can lead to overheating of the cord, posing fire and burn hazards. In addition, cord damage near the bushing can result in exposed copper wires, posing a shock hazard.

Recall Details

This recall involves dual voltage Steamfast brand Home and Away Travel Steam Irons with model numbers SF-717, SF-720 and SF-727 and with date codes between January 2008 and March 2017, and Brookstone Steam Bug Travel Steam Irons with model number 606335. The model numbers and the production date codes are printed on the back of the irons. Steamfast or Brookstone are printed on the white irons.

The recalled Steamfast and Brookstone irons can also be identified by the length of the cord bushing. The recalled irons have a gray or black cord bushing that extends less than one inch from the enclosure along the power cord.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled irons and visit the Steamfast or Vornado website to register for the recall and receive a refund of $19.99.

Vornado has received 50 reports of incidents, including 38 reports of the iron’s power cord smoking, sparking, burning or other signs of overheating and 12 reports of cord damage. No injuries have been reported.

The Steamfast Mini does not win any awards for its power or its performance. Its only claim to fame is the fact that it is both travel and budget-friendly . Read on to find out if this tiny iron is the right option for you.

Performance Comparison

Ironing Performance

The Steamfast Mini is not only small in stature, but its power output is minimal as well. It simply cannot compete with the larger, more powerful full-size options in our test suite. It removed most shallow wrinkles in linen and cotton but struggled with polyester and silk. The glide across cotton and linen was not very smooth, requiring additional effort when working with these fabrics. It stuck a little when working with silk, too, struggling to get all the wrinkles out. Polyester required a significant amount of pressure and additional heat to remove wrinkles, and some remained. We also noticed water dribbles when ironing synthetics.

Steam Output

We were not expecting much when we tested this tiny steam iron , and we were not surprised by the results. The Mini features just four small steam holes at the top of the soleplate, which is far less than what most of the options in our test suite come equipped with. Compared to many other models we tested with up to 400 steam holes, we're not particularly surprised that this iron lets off some of the lowest amounts of steam of any we've tested. It's not the least steam, though, despite having the fewest escape points for said steam.

We already mentioned that the Mini doesn't pack much of a punch in the power department, and this was confirmed in our heating test . The average temperature of the soleplate hit just 288° Fahrenheit. This is rather low compared to the larger options in our test suite. The heat is also not dispersed evenly, resulting in a 60° difference in temperature from the top of the soleplate to the bottom.

The Mini does not come with water spray or steam blast. It is also challenging to maneuver around buttons, pleats, and other hard-to-reach places, making detail work difficult. Additionally, the nose doesn't get very hot, further limiting its detailing ability.

Ease of Use

The Mini may be minimal, but that does not make it user-friendly . The 7.5 foot long cord wraps around the handle, which is convenient, but the cord feels rather bulky when compared to other small appliances. That being said, anything shorter would hinder your ability to work with larger items. It is also worth noting that you need to wrap the cord around your wrist while ironing to keep it from dragging and wrinkling up your fabric. The rounded rubber edge on the handle offers some grip, and the decent-sized groove between the handle and the base allows you to hold it in whatever way feels most comfortable. As for filling it up, the soft rubber plug is easy to open, but the small hole makes spilling inevitable.

Should You Buy the Steamfast SF-717 Mini?

The Steamfast Mini gets a majority of easy jobs done, as long as you're willing to put some elbow grease into the process. It is compact and travel-friendly with a nice handle, and those are genuinely its only redeeming factors. While this mini steam iron has a mini price tag to match, it is only a good value if you plan to travel with it.

Perfect for crafting, especially pressing fabric squares for quilting. No more burned finger tips from a big iron. Also perfect for those tiny corners that a big iron can't get into. I'm making masks for donation and this iron is the perfect solution for pressing the seams and pleats. It heats up fast, is lightweight, easy to fill for steam ironing, and isn't bulky and in the way when not in use. It has a nice long cord and fits nicely in my hand.

Light weight and cute

I like the smallness of the iron and the fact that it is light weight, but it seems to sputter and spit out water and I've tried several ways to stop it but could not. So I now iron dry and use a spray bottle and that works well.

I DONT IRON. lol. but i AM into patches lately on my clothes.

So i got a ton of patches and went to town on my stuff. problem is it takes awhile, maybe its the weight of this , not sure, but i ironed a patch onto a tee shirt and i had to go over it quite a bit. but the end result was great. it does stay on. but as for ironing clothes i'm sure this would rock. might just take longer because of the size.

Affected products

This recall expansion involves Steamfast brand lightweight handheld Home and Away Travel Steam Irons: SF-717, SF-720. The model numbers are printed on the back of the irons. Steamfast is printed on the white iron.

The company previously recalled units manufactured before April 2017.

The power cord can become damaged near the cord bushing, which can lead to overheating of the cord, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. In addition, cord damage near the bushing can result in exposed copper wires, posing a shock hazard.

As of November 28, 2023, the company has received 5 reports of incidents in Canada, including 1 report of a burn. In the United States, the company has received 74 reports of incidents and 2 reports of minor shock.

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.
