About babymetal.

BABYMETAL is a Japanese female heavy metal band, formed as a sub-unit of the idol group Sakura Gakuin in 2010. The frontwomen of the group, SU-METAL and MOAMETAL, are backed by a powerful group of musicians called the Kami Band. The band’s original sound fuses metal with J-pop elements, combining catchy melodies with chaotic guitar riffs, and elaborate live performances. The band released their self-titled debut album in 2014, which topped the Japanese charts and gained fans around the globe. This international success was soon followed by successful world tours as well as the release of two more albums, Metal Resistance and Metal Galaxy, both of which also went to number one in Japan. BABYMETAL has earned praise from some of the biggest names in metal music, such as Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. They have also won several awards, including the Metal Hammer award

"I'd cover Metallica's St. Anger": Babymetal talk touring, collaborations and opening the door for Japanese metal

C losing in on a decade since the release of their debut album , Babymetal have evolved from a WTF curio to a crucial part of the metal firmament. Across their four records, the band have moved away from their original ‘J-pop meets speed metal’ pitch to incorporate everything from nu metal and hip hop to folk, symphonic and power metal, earning them millions of fans around the world.

The addition of Momometal in 2023 brought the band back up to a trio, and November’s sold-out UK shows showed just how potent this new era is set to be for Babymetal. With Download on the horizon, Hammer took your questions for the trio and prayed to the Fox God that we’d get answers…

Why do you think your music appeals to so many different generations and demographics?

Exbuk, Instagram

Su-metal: “We are professionals, not bound by boundaries. We strive to perform to the best of our ability. Because so many different people are involved, I believe that no matter what angle you look at what we produce, it works, and that the reactions of people who grew up in different [creative] fields create something new and interesting. We are OK with changing and being criticised. This is how we’ve grown as a group, so I think a lot of people find us interesting.”

Momometal: “If I were to listen to Babymetal for the first time without knowing anything about us, I’d think that it’s the kind of music that would immediately catch your ears. This is especially true for people who are listening to metal for the first time. I was like that! Because there are so many catchy phrases and melodies, I feel like getting more and more addicted to it, wanting to listen to other songs as well.”

Hammer: Do you think Babymetal opened the door for more Japanese metal bands?

Su-metal: “Some people say that Babymetal’s music inspired them to become interested in Japanese culture and listen to other Japanese bands’ music, so I’d be happy if I could be a bridge between all kinds of music.”

If you could put your music into a videogame, what type of game would it be? Face Time Police, Facebook

Moametal: “ Megitsune and METALI!! are full of Japanese elements. How about a game in which a ninja who escapes from the land of ninjas becomes an ordinary citizen, and goes on a quest to become an office worker or a teacher or something, and aims to be the best in various professions? Gimme Chocolate!! is perfect for the pastry chef scene!”

Momometal: “I’m sure that the combat type game would definitely suit us. Please have Divine Attack at the climax! Also, I don’t know if this could be a videogame, but maybe one where you could create your own favourite band village. We could make a big metal village, Babymetal village! And sometimes there could be events, like festivals [in the village]. I’d love to play a game where you could customise your own costumes and stage sets.”

What’s the best day you’ve ever had on tour, and what made it special?

Leon DT, Facebook

Su-metal: “It’s hard to choose just one day because I have so much fun every day, but the most memorable day this year was the first show in January after the sealing of our live activities. When I heard the cheers of the audience for the first time in two years, I realised, ‘I’m back, I can stay here. How precious this place is to me.’

Before that, we had rehearsed a lot, but even if we sang and danced to the same song, the enjoyment was completely different. I realised how much fun live performances are, and how irreplaceable they are. I feel like it led me to value our everyday shows even more.”

Momometal: “The shows in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada [in October 2023 with Dethklok], were amazing! Our fans were waiting and the excitement we felt was incredible. The Toronto show was outdoors, so during Monochrome the phone lights really worked well. It was so beautiful, like stars, that I clearly remember the view.”

How many hours do you practise choreography?

Ronan B, Facebook

Moametal: “We don’t actually practise every day, but maybe six days a week! Ha ha! The three of us work on our choreography of new songs, and prepare and check the other songs together. Momometal and I work on mastering them. Other than that, I try to expand my range of dances by doing dances other than Babymetal – our dancing is very important. I would be very happy if everyone who supports Babymetal thought our dancing was also special [to the art we create].”

What’s your favourite song to perform?

Caballero_official98, Instagram

Su-metal: “Oh! MAJINAI is fun to perform. It’s really tiring, but we often dance in a circle and look at everyone’s faces in the crowd, and it’s fun to hold hands and go around.”

Momometal: “Lately, it’s been METALI!! It’s our first song since becoming the newly reborn Babymetal, and even people who don’t know this song get excited at our live shows, both in Japan and overseas, so it’s really exciting to perform. I forget how tired I am during this song. I can’t help but have fun!”

If you could cover any metal song, what would you choose?

George A, Facebook

Su-metal: “ Nightwish ’s Storytime .”

Moametal: “I can’t choose just one! Metallica’s St. Anger … Ah! Bring Me The Horizon’s Mother Tongue is also good. Slipknot’s Psychosocial too! But Electric Callboy’s We Got The Moves also seems to be suitable for Babymetal. It’d be fun to do Måneskin’s Mammamia . I can’t stop dreaming. This kind of delusion is a reward.”

Momometal: “ Lost by Bring Me The Horizon! I got to see BMTH live for the first time at NEX_FEST; I couldn’t take my eyes off the performance during this song. There is a contemporary [dance] movement in the music video, so I’d like to combine that kind of choreography with the song.”

How has the touring experience changed for you over the years?

Moametal: “The tour schedule, which became harder as I grew older, is quite demanding. I have to take care of my body and mental health every day, especially while travelling. But I’m so happy that there are people who are asking and waiting for us, and every time [we play somewhere] the venue gets bigger. There are many different things happening out there [globally], but I just hope for a world where everyone can enjoy music.”

If you were hosting a Babymetal festival, what bands would you invite? Maya1zm, Instagram

Su-metal: “I have a dream of holding a festival that brings together female vocalists such as those in Evanescence, Nightwish and Arch Enemy.”

Moametal: “Metallica! They are on a world tour, so I’d like to invite them to Japan and welcome them with our omotenashi – Japanese hospitality. I’d also love to meet Rob Halford again, so Judas Priest. I want to invite Red Hot Chili Peppers, going across genres, and I want to meet Dragonforce for the first time in a while! I definitely want Bring Me The Horizon, who invited us to their festival too.”

Momometal: “Yungblud, Willow Smith and [Japanese girl-group] Atarashii Gakko!”

What’s been your favourite country to visit, and why?

Sudasu23, Instagram

Su-metal: “I love all countries and each has its own good points, so I can’t choose the best. I’m in Germany right now, and the live audience is so enthusiastic and I feel so happy to be able to eat my favourite schnitzel.”

Moametal: “It’s hard to choose – the people in every region are so kind and you fall in love with them right away. We’ve performed a lot in the UK and Germany, so they feel like a second home. I feel relaxed in those countries.”

Momometal: “Oslo, Norway! We kicked off our EU and UK tour there, so we were able to do a little sightseeing, and the cityscape was beautiful, stylish and wonderful. Of course, it was extremely cold and there wasn’t much sunlight even during the day, but the air was strangely warm. The cute decorations as it was Christmas season warmed my heart. I was impressed by how fluffy and delicious the potatoes were, and how thick and fresh the salmon was. I definitely want to go again!”

Here is a riddle for you all to consider: What is cute as a basket of puppies, addictive as a bag of chocolates, and as entertaining as a Chinese finger trap (maybe even more). The answer is BABYMETAL.

I was referred to their YouTube channel by a friend. Then the magic truly began. I was watching their music videos day and night, (in a non-creepy way, considering SU-METAL is older than me by a lot) and then I was compelled to learn Japanese, which in my mind is serious dedication. I then continued to watch their lives on YouTube (most in horrible quality), reviews, and dance covers made by other fans. I am glad I am not the only stalker on the Internet. I then asked myself a question: "It would TOTALLY be worth it to go to one of these, right?" I then begged my relative who lives abroad to let me go to the BABYMETAL birthday celebration of YUI-METAL in Paris, and later MOA-METAL's in Cologne.

I completely blew all of my summer's spending money, but to me, nothing was more worth the money than to see those girls and Kami-Band in the live performance.

When I finally got to the floor of both of those theatres, I had a huge adrenaline spike. It was hard for me to even breathe. The music fusion of J-Pop and Metal, the in-sync-ness of the whole experience, the fans. It was too much to absorb. I would recommend the BABYMETAL experience to anyone who wants to go on a fox-ride of an adventure, like the one I am experiencing now. But to put it shortly, I'll say this: BABYMETAL is coming. And you are next.

I'm a huge fan of BABYMETAL and was looking forward to the show. Although the quality of their actual performance was pretty good, I took issue with a few things that night. First of all, the line to get into the venue (Regency Ballroom) was over three blocks long and it moved very slowly. It took us over an hour to get inside. Fortunately, we got in a few minutes before the show started, but the place was very crowded (it was sold out) and difficult to see the stage. My girlfriend is only 5'2" tall, and she could not see the band at all. They should raise the stage a bit to help with this problem. It did not help that the ventilation is quite poor--it got very hot and stuffy with all those hundreds of people. It felt like a health hazard! Not fun to stand around in all night! The show itself was only about an hour and a half, which is short in my opinion, especially since there was no warm up band. They never played some of my favorite songs as a result. They did one encore. I had never been to the Regency Ballroom, and I don't think I will go back unless they improve some of the things I mentioned. The next time I see BABYMETAL, I will be more choosy about the venue!

This was my first time seeing Babymetal. Our Tucson, Arizona show was decent, and I was very excited to see the act. However, I felt a little underwhelmed when the show was over. I think my biggest complaint was the set length. The set list was only about an hour long. At the end, they just left the stage. No encore, no "we love you guys, Tucson is the best!", nothing. The crowd stayed around for a minute, wondering, "is this really it?" I kinda felt jipped. The saving grace for the event was the opening act. I'd never heard of Avatar before this show, and I didn't YouTube any of their music prior to the show. I thought they were a little silly at first, with the outfits and face paint and voice style and everything, but in the end, I enjoyed Avatar a lot. Sadly, more than the Babymetal act. Would I see Babymetal again? Yes, but I'd be going in with lowered expectations. Would I see Avatar again? Absolutely, and with deserved high expectations.

A great show!!

It was far from flawless, there were sound problems throughout the night and it seemed to take the sound engineer a while to sort the levels out but as a show it was spectacular with a walkway from the main stage to a separate small stage in the middle of the floor. The lighting was on a huge scale, reminiscent of the likes of AC/DC and Iron Maiden, with plenty of Rammstein-esque pyrotechnics.

The audience were a complete mix, from metal-heads and J-pop lovers and everything in between with an age range of five to 75 and from many nationalities. I counted at least 10 different national flags!! The one thing most noticeable, though, was that everyone was there to enjoy themselves and it was evident from the Kami Band as well as the girls themselves. At the end of the last song, Road to Resistance, all three seemed reluctant to finally leave the stage.

For an evening of pure fun and enjoyment Babymetal are very hard to beat.

Sold out/general admission so we were almost 2 hours early (to have dinner and get in line). But the line was already around the entire building. There was the craziest diversity: anime girls in full costume followed by tattooed death metal guys in Megadeth t-shirts followed by conservative Asian dad with 6 year old girl in pigtails and then the wife and I (who just had to see it in person after seeing their videos on youtube). The people watching was great. It turned out to be a real high octane show that fully held my attention the entire time. It was worth our time. The band kicks ass. The girls are amazing. It was unlike anything we have ever seen. Great time.

greg-lee-6’s profile image

First time I'd been privileged enough to see the girls perform, when they were dancing in front of the red wall, just blew my mind took me back a long time to bands back in the 70s/80s. Wembley is a great place because although so many other fans there, you still felt really close to the girls which added to the memory. The four men playing the instruments were the work force making the girls what they are brilliant...dazed after the concert was over, I only had about 60, miles to drive, I forgot the route it took us nearly 2, hours or more to get home, but didn't we all remained entranced by the sound & sights in front of that redwall

damon-hazell’s profile image

So the Babymetal concert was a fantastic show. The songs, the choreography, the lightshow, all were brilliant. I didn't even really mind the addition of two new dancers that much. The Kami Band was of course excellent.

However, missing one member of the original line-up (Yui) made the show feel distinctly un-Babymetal-like. The 'kawaii' that made the act so endearing in the first place is missing without the trio of girls. Not that they can't be allowed to grow up, but they're a team, and the interaction of the three of them is noticably missing.

Overall, very worth the trouble to see. Just...different from earlier Babymetal.

Equinoqs’s profile image

All of the videos I've seen for Babymetal are good, but they don't do the band justice. The girls are great, full of energy and put on an awesome show, and the guys playing the instruments are very talented as well.

It was a very heavy, intense concert.

The only downside to my experience was I picked a bad place to stand and had a hard time seeing them. But that was my own fault. When you go to their show, you definitely want to be able to see them while they're performing.

I would highly recommend everybody see Babymetal live. I know I'll be eagerly waiting for their next tour!

dan-markowski’s profile image

Stunning, amazing, breathtaking... I don't know which word to use to describe it the best. Such a great and professional performance from Babymetal, I just can't praise them enough. The feel you get from seeing them perform in person has a completely different vibe to it than just listening to them on Youtube. Everyone in crowd was going wild, everyone there shared the same love for the band and that made it even better!

timaster7878’s profile image

Fantastic show! The lead singer is a pretty good singer and does NOT lip synch! The girls are fun to watch and full of energy. The backing metal band is spectacular!

It was great to see a wider variety of fans than at a standard metal show. I also loved seeing all the standard fans embracing such a novel idea.

Would definitely see them again!

BABYMETAL Announce North American Co-Headline Tour With DETHKLOK

Facebook icon

THE BABYKLOK TOUR TO COMMENCE IN AUGUST

The other one concept album available now  .

Japanese metal band BABYMETAL have announced a co-headline tour with DETHKLOK, the on-screen heavy metal band and stars of Adult Swim’s “Metalocalypse,” and support from virtuoso guitarist Jason Richardson. BABYMETAL’s first time back to the US since before the pandemic, the 29-date Live Nation-produced BABYKLOK TOUR will kick off August 30th in Houston, TX, hitting Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and many more (full dates below) before wrapping October 11th at Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater. The tour will support their recent, first-ever concept album, THE OTHER ONE.

TICKETS:  Tickets will be available starting with a CITI presale (details below) beginning today at 12:00 PM ET. An artist presale will begin at 1:00 PM local time and include VIP package options for both artists. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on sale beginning Friday, April 14 at 10:00 AM local time. More information is available at thebabykloktour.com .

PRESALE: Citi is the official card of the BABYKLOK TOUR. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning today at 12:00 PM ET until Thursday, April 13 at 10:00 PM local time through the Citi Entertainment program. For complete presale details visit www.citientertainment.com .

Last year BABYMETAL was “sealed” from the world after a successful 10-year journey. In April 2022, THE OTHER ONE restoration project began to recover the BABYMETAL we never knew existed within a virtual world called the METALVERSE.
