Machynlleth from above, Mid Wales

Must do in and around Machynlleth

In Machynlleth, you’ll meet people who are passionate about art, nature, wholesome food, sustainable living, cycling, and even comedy. Here is travel writer Emma Gregg 's pick of things to do in Machynlleth and around the Dyfi Valley.

Machynlleth is truly a gem - a rural market town with a quirky, eco-friendly vibe nestled within the beautiful UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere . There's loads to do and see just wandering around. There are plenty of antique stores, alternative lifestyle shops and galleries featuring local artists and craftspeople. There's a bustling market on Wednesdays and even an annual world famous comedy festival .

Owain Glyndŵr Centre

Crowned by a splendid Victorian clock tower, Heol Maengwyn is Machynlleth’s high street. It’s sprinkled with useful shops, galleries, cosy cafés and, on Wednesdays, market stalls, a tradition launched by royal charter in 1291. It was also the site of national hero Owain Glyndŵr’s 1404 parliament - the original Senedd. The Owain Glyndŵr Centre is the local history museum that tells his story.

MOMA Machynlleth

MOMA Machynlleth is an intimate museum of modern art in a Victorian town house and a former Wesleyan chapel, The Tabernacle, has a hefty collection of local treasures. Its white-walled exhibition spaces show contemporary Welsh paintings, prints, sculpture and photography. Arty types refuel over top notch coffee and cake at Y Tabernacl Coffee Shop .

Machynlleth Comedy Festival

If you're looking for laughs you probably wouldn't think of heading to a comedy festival  in the ancient capital of Wales. But we'd absolutely recommend that you do. Over the May bank holiday every year, the cream of comedy talent - rising and established - descend on Mach to try out new material, experiment with new formats, and generally have a fine old time. Look out for shows in usual places, like on the Corris Steam Railway, or in local gin distilleries. Book your tickets now: Machynlleth Comedy Festival .

The Centre for Alternative Technology

In 1974, long before green principles became mainstream, a small group of eco-enthusiasts created the Centre for Alternative Technology (or CAT, as it's affectionately known) in an old slate quarry, three miles north of Machynlleth. It was unique, and inspired a generation. Today, the centre’s beautiful School of the Environment runs excellent day courses, postgraduate courses and distance learning on practical topics such as earth ovens, composting toilets, raw food, upcycling, traditional crafts and harnessing renewable energy.

Food that puts Mach on the map

The most famous restaurant in the area is undoubtedly the two Michelin star restaurant, Ynyshir . The 30-course feast combines produce from the shores of Dyfi with the intense flavours of the Far East. In the words of food blogger Lowri Haf Cooke, who visited all nine of Wales' Michelin star resturants , ' expect the unexpected and enjoy a transcendental trip to remember '.

Ynyshir food and chef Gareth Ward

Ynyshir's sister restaurant Gwen , has also opened on the high street of Machynlleth. The ten course menu of meat, fish and local produce is cooked over a fire in an open kitchen in front of just eight diners. The cosy bar serves smaller meals and a good selection of wine.

Also in the centre of Mach is The Wynnstay , a traditional pub that serves a delicious Sunday lunch; Tŷ Medi , a vegetarian and vegan cafe that creates tapas and Mexican dishes; and Popty Clai  (Clay Bakery), a bakery that bakes fresh bread and cakes.

If you are travelling from Mach in the direction of Talybont it is worth popping into the community hub and cafe, Cletwr - an enterprise owned and run by the community. The shop there sells Welsh products including Teifi Coffee , Ty'n y Gors meats and Purple Moose Brewery beer.

RSPB Ynys-hir Nature Reserve

If you’re a fan of BBC  Springwatch , you’re sure to enjoy the Welsh woodland and wetland reserve where it was filmed several times. At Ynys-hir  you might even make some seasonal discoveries of your own. Spring brings carpets of bluebells and trilling wood warblers, autumn brings ducks and other water birds can be seen from the hides all year round. Follow the trails to explore the lowland wet grasslands, reedbed, and saltmarsh habitats.

Falconry Experience Wales

In the wilds of the Dyfi Valley UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Falconry Experience Wales  is one of several sites in mid Wales where you can learn about birds of prey. Run by experienced falconers, it’s a place to get close – very close – to captive-bred owls, falcons, hawks, eagles and red kites, discovering how to handle them and taking them out to fly over the hills.

Mountain biking in the Dyfi Valley

Machynlleth is the perfect launch pad for an adventure on two wheels, thanks to Dyfi Mountain Biking , an enthusiastic group of local volunteers. They’ve waymarked three routes called Mach 1, 2 and 3 along roads, lanes and bridleways, and created CliMachX, an exhilarating off-road forest trail with rocky jumps and a massive final descent.

Dyfi Osprey Project

The  Dyfi Osprey Project , a love-nest for ospreys, is the work of dedicated conservationists, whose first big success – three healthy chicks – featured on BBC  Springwatch . While the migrants are in residence (roughly April to September), you can view them through scopes, binoculars or live on screen. A two-storey observatory with views over bird, mammal and insect habitats is also open for visitors.

Corris Mine Explorers

There’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained at Corris Mine Explorers , based at Corris Craft Centre . Kit up in a hard hat for a fascinating tour of an abandoned slate mine, take a boat trip through an underground maze while listening to tales from long ago in King Arthur's Labyrinth , or get messy at a hands-on craft session making pottery, candles, chocolate or wooden furniture.

Corris Railway

The  Corris Railway is a narrow-gauge railway, lovingly restored by local railway enthusiasts. They have one of the prettiest steam locomotives in Wales, specially built in 2005 to a classic Kerr, Stuart and Company design. On a 50-minute round trip, it puffs through the former slate-mining region between Corris and Maespoeth, stopping for a tour of the engine shed and workshops.

NO trains will run between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth for two weeks from Saturday as work is carried out on a bridge.

Rail replacement buses will run between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth from Saturday, 21 October until Friday, 3 November – which includes half-term week.

The road replacement has been scheduled so that an ‘active travel path’ can be built under the rail bridge in Machynlleth.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “Thanks to a Welsh Government Active Travel grant, access for pedestrians and cyclists is set to be improved with the re-opening of a redundant archway.

“It is proposed to open the ‘filled’ archway and strengthen the structure with a reinforced concrete lining.”

The rail replacement service will run all day for 14 days from 21 October and also early and late services on 16 and 20 of October.

The buses will stop at Aberystwyth bus station, Bow Street station car park, bus stop on Princess Street in Borth and in front of Machynlleth station.

Transport for Wales confirmed: “Works are being undertaken to reopen the railway bridge arch in Machynlleth to pedestrian and cyclists to improve active travel routes in the town.”

Storm Ciarán: Communities across Wales hit by travel disruption

  • Storm Ciarán
  • Thursday 2 November 2023 at 7:15pm

Trainlines across north and mid Wales were closed and ferries cancelled after Storm Ciaran battered the UK.

Campers at a caravan park had to be evacuated due to flood water and although the worst of the weather passed by Thursday evening, a severe flood warning remains in place in Tenby.

Kiln Park caravan park near Tenby has already evacuated residents for fear of danger to life due to warnings of severe flooding.

Ross Akers, NRW’s Duty Tactical Manager, said:  "As Storm Ciarán continues to move across Wales there still remains a risk of significant flood impacts, and we are urging people to be aware of the weather forecasts and be prepared.

“We’re expecting to see very heavy rainfall in North and Mid Wales later today (Thursday) and this rain will fall in places in North Wales that experienced flooding during Storm Babet.

“Our teams are doing all they can to reduce the risk for communities. But if there is flooding we want to make sure people are doing all they can to keep themselves safe too.

"We urge people to keep away from swollen rivers, and not to drive or to walk through flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and can contain hidden hazards. Allow extra time for any journeys as driving conditions will be hazardous.

“Take care when out and about today – especially if visiting the South and Mid Wales coasts.

“Making sure you know what the situation is like where you live is really important. You can check your flood risk and the latest flood alerts and warnings on our website which is refreshed every 15 minutes.

"Keep an eye on @NatResWales on X (Twitter) for the latest information and listen to weather reports and local news for details of any disruption in your area.”

But what other disruptions are expected?

Heart of Wales Line - Trains will not run . Passengers are advised not to travel on this route

Conwy Valley Line – Trains will not run . Rail replacement services will be in operation, but please check before travelling

Cambrian Line - train services between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury will run at a reduced 2 hourly frequency

Trains on other routes may also be subject to short-notice delays and cancellations.

Restrictions are in place on the M48 Severn Bridge in both directions due to strong winds.

Britannia Bridge , which crosses the Menai Strait between Anglesey and Bangor, has issued a speed limit of 30 mph for all vehicles.

All sailings have been cancelled on Stena Line between Fishguard and Rosslare due to poor weather conditions.

A spokesperson said: "Due to forecast adverse weather conditions, Stena Line has cancelled sailings on its Rosslare - Cherbourg route today. Provided the weather improves, this service is due to recommence tomorrow."

Welsh Government

Go-ahead for new Dyfi Bridge

The proposed new Dyfi Bridge on the A487 north of Machynlleth, has been given the go-ahead by Welsh Government Transport Minister Ken Skates.

This was published under the 2016 to 2021 administration of the Welsh Government

New Dyfi Bridge

The £46 million scheme will improve road safety, strengthen links between communities, provide active travel opportunities and build resilience against flooding, as well as improve transport connectivity to help stimulate further economic development in this part of Wales.

The current Dyfi Bridge is a 19th century stone narrow bridge with poor visibility and no footways. The river Dyfi frequently floods, severing communities on either side of the bridge, with these incidents likely to increase because of climate change. The bridge’s closures can impact on the community’s ability to access key services such as healthcare, education and public transport in Machynlleth and beyond.

The new development will be a viaduct across the floodplain and a river bridge across the Afon Dyfi approximately 480 metres upstream of the existing bridge. The project will support the Welsh Government’s work on the mid-Wales Growth Deal which is currently being developed.

The scheme will include traffic calming and improved drainage on the A493 immediately north of the bridge to protect the existing cottages, and there will be a flood bund constructed to protect the Dyfi Eco Park from river flooding.

The removal of large scale traffic from the 19th century bridge and provision of a walking and cycle path will improve active travel opportunities increasing the attraction of Machynlleth and surrounding area as a tourist destination.

Ken Skates said:

The A487 is a key route between North and South Wales linking Gwynedd, Powys, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. It is also an important local route providing access to the amenities and services of Machynlleth. We are already making improvements further north with the Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass and it is clear to me that action needs to be taken to improve this section of the A487 so that there is a safe and reliable route linking the communities around Machynlleth, including better and more reliable access to bus and train services in the town. The new route is good news for North and Mid Wales and will bring many benefits including enhanced protection against flooding. With climate change increasing the risk of flooding it’s important that we provide protection for homes and businesses and this scheme will contribute to both. This vital infrastructure will also complement the work the Welsh Government is doing to support the mid-Wales Growth Deal to develop new economic opportunities in this important part of Wales. Tourism is important for the Dyfi Valley and the removal of heavy traffic from the existing listed stone bridge allows for more walking and cycling opportunities which will be excellent not only for local people but for tourists too.

The next stage will include detailed design works and further ground investigation work. Construction could begin in summer 2020, subject to the statutory process, with completion by summer 2022.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 29, 2024 / 5:01 AM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

Ohio mother who left toddler alone when she went on vacation is sentenced in child’s murder

An Ohio woman whose toddler died after she left her alone for more than a week while she went on vacation was sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday, the Cuyahoga County prosecutor said.

Kristel Candelario, 32, pleaded guilty last month t o aggravated murder and endangering children in connection with the death of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn, last year.

Candelario left for vacation June 6 and left Jailyn alone. She visited Detroit and Puerto Rico, the prosecutor’s office said.

When she returned on June 16, she found Jailyn dead and called police, authorities said.

Jailyn Calendario mom mother sentencing court legal law child death

Jailyn died of starvation and severe dehydration due to pediatric neglect, Dr. Elizabeth Mooney, the deputy Cuyahoga County medical examiner, said in court Monday. The manner was ruled homicide.

The child was extremely dehydrated and emaciated, weighing 13 pounds, 7 pounds less than in her last doctor's visit less than two months before, Mooney said.

Mooney, who conducted the autopsy, called Jailyn's death "one of the most tragic and unfortunate cases I’ve had in my career thus far." She said the child could have suffered for possibly a week.

In a statement Monday, prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley called Jailyn “a beautiful baby girl who was taken from this world due to her mother’s unimaginable selfishness.”

Candelario told the court Monday that “every day I ask forgiveness from God and from my daughter Jailyn.”

She also asked forgiveness from her other daughter and from her parents.

Jailyn Calendario.

Candelario’s attorney, Derek Smith, said that no one was trying to excuse her behavior but that Candelario was struggling emotionally and was overwhelmed as a single mother of two children.

Candelario had tried to harm herself earlier in 2023 and she had been placed on antidepressants, which she stopped taking without tapering down in dosage as required, which can cause side effects, Smith told the court. Candelario was "not thinking clearly," he said.

“I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through,” Candelario said through an interpreter.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Anna Faraglia told the court Monday that Candelario had left Jailyn alone for two days immediately before she left on vacation.

"The thought of this child dying every day while she's having fun — humanity can't stomach that," Faraglia said. "And those are the actions that need to be punished. She abandoned her daughter and left her for dead."

In sentencing Candelario, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Brendan Sheehan noted that the police and the medical professionals involved called it one of the most horrific cases they’d ever seen.

“It stunned people across this world, because it defies one of the basic human responsibilities,” Sheehan said. He called it “the ultimate act of betrayal.”

Planning to travel with a pet? Be mindful of these airport pet policies in NY

machynlleth travel news

Are you planning on traveling with a pet?

Airports throughout New York advise pet owners to check with their specific airline to make sure all guidelines are followed, as each airline establishes its own policies . But the airports themselves also have their own set of rules and regulations.

Here's what to know about the varying policies regarding pets in some airports throughout the state.

Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport

Pets are allowed inside the airport if they are traveling with their owner, but should not be brought into the terminal to greet arriving passengers, said Monroe County deputy director of communications Meaghan McDermott.

Designated pet relief areas are located outside of the airport and in each of the concourses.

JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Airports

Port Authority New York/New Jersey airports like John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark follow U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines.

"No person shall enter any Port Authority of New York & New Jersey operated area, public landing area, public ramp and apron area, public passenger ramp and apron area, or public cargo ramp and apron area of the air terminal with any animal except a service animal ... or one properly confined for shipment," a Port Authority representative said in a written statement.

In designated pet relief areas, animals can be on a leash but elsewhere in the terminal, they should be placed in an airline transport-approved carrier.

Syracuse Hancock International Airport

Animals except for service animals or animals being used for law enforcement purposes are not allowed inside the airport unless they are being transported on a plane, according to a Syracuse Hancock International Airport representative. If that's the case, those animals need to be on a leash or in a crate.

The airport also has multiple pet relief rooms located outdoors and one inside Terminal A .

TSA PreCheck adds 8 new international airlines to its program

machynlleth travel news

Eight new international airlines have joined the TSA PreCheck program, allowing eligible passengers flying to destinations like Tahiti or the Bahamas to enjoy a faster airport security screening process, the Transportation Security Administration announced Thursday.

The recently added airlines include Air Premia, Air Tahiti Nui, Air Transat, Bahamasair, BermudAir, Iberia, La Compagnie and New Pacific Airlines.

Enrolled passengers can use the TSA PreCheck lane when flying these airlines from one of the more than 200 airports throughout the U.S. and its territories, or if they're connecting on a domestic flight after returning to the country from a foreign airport.

The recently added airlines bring the total airlines participating in the Trusted Traveler Program to almost 100, the announcement said.

"About 99% of TSA PreCheck passengers wait less than 10 minutes in dedicated lanes at airport checkpoints nationwide," the TSA said. Membership for TSA PreCheck lasts five years, and takes a five-minute-long online application and 10 minute in-person interview to enroll.

In December, TSA added four airlines  – Norse Atlantic Airways, Lynx Air, Starlux Airlines and Fiji Airways –to its roster.
