Internationals: England set to tour New Zealand in July 2024 – report

Steve Borthwick's first tour as England head coach will be to New Zealand, according to reports, while Ireland return to South Africa. England are set to face the All Blacks in a Test series in July 2024 after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Steve Borthwick’s first tour as England head coach will be to New Zealand, according to reports, while Ireland are set to return to South Africa.

England are poised to face the All Blacks in a Test series in July 2024 after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

2024 July internationals

Due to the Rugby World Cup , there will be no traditional July tours next year, but the Times reports that Borthwick will face the challenging task of battling the All Blacks in New Zealand in 2024.

Borthwick takes charge of his first Six Nations campaign next year before four warm-up matches ahead of the Rugby World Cup. After the 2024 Six Nations, a trip to the land of the long white cloud follows.

England’s last tour to New Zealand was back in 2014 when Stuart Lancaster coached the side to a 3-0 series defeat.

Prior to that, England lost both their Tests against the All Blacks in 2008 but claimed a 15-13 win over New Zealand ahead of the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

The July internationals in 2024 could consist of just two Tests, according to the newspaper, in order to lessen the load on the players after the Rugby World Cup.

While England head to New Zealand, Australia are set to host Wales in a two-Test series with an option of a third match against the Wallabies or an emerging nation from the area.

South Africa is set to host Ireland for the first time since 2016, when a then-Joe Schmidt-coached side defeated the Springboks at home for the first time.

The report adds that France will head to Argentina that July while Italy will head to North America to face the United States and Canada. Finally, Scotland are set to play in the Pacific Islands, where they will likely front up against any of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.

Nations Championship

After the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour, it is reported that the Nations Championship will come into play which will see the traditional tours come to an end.

If instigated, Test teams will face multiple nations across July and November in a league format rather than a touring one.

The 2024 Six Nations takes place between February 2 and March 16, with the northern hemisphere's best looking for silverware after the autumn's Rugby World Cup.

Last time out, Ireland achieved their first championship since 2018 and completed the Grand Slam. France were second - losing only to the champions - while Scotland threatened a title challenge, England and Wales faltered, and Italy footed the table.

Since then, there's been the small matter of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, with Ireland and Les Bleus heavily fancied, but suffering quarter-final exits over the same weekend to New Zealand and South Africa respectively. Scotland failed to make the quarter-finals for the second World Cup in a row, while Wales and England found themselves on a much kinder side of the draw but out to Argentina (quarters) and South Africa (semis).

England to play in Japan in June 2024 - their first Test in the country

22 June 2023 22 June 2023 . From the section English Rugby

England players form a huddle

England will travel to Japan next year for a historic first Test match between the two sides in the country.

Steve Borthwick's team will face the Brave Blossoms on 22 June 2024, with the venue to be confirmed.

The teams have met three times, with the last match a 52-13 win for England in last year's autumn Tests.

England - who face Japan in the group stage of this year's World Cup - toured the country in 1971 and 1979 but the games did not have Test status.

"This is a landmark occasion for our two rugby nations," RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said.

JRFU president Masato Tsuchida added: "We are delighted to welcome England to Japan next year."

England will face Japan in Nice on 17 September in the countries' opening games in Group D of the World Cup in France.

Six Nations 2024: Scotland v England - Finn Russell ready for blitz from visitors

england rugby tour 2024

23 February 2024 23 February 2024 . From the section Scottish Rugby

Scotland captain Finn Russell (left) in training

Finn Russell says Scotland cannot get caught up in "history and emotion" as they bid to complete a historic four-in-a-row in the Calcutta Cup on Saturday.

It would be the first time in more than half a century that Scotland would have won four consecutive Tests against England. That run included a Rugby Football Union centenary game, however. The Scots have not beaten England in four straight championship games since 1896.

"It's about having belief in ourselves and trust in the work we've put in," says the co-captain and fly-half.

"At times, we will be under pressure and it will be tough, but we can have belief and confidence in ourselves and hopefully we can take some of the chances that will be out there.

"A learning from the World Cup was to not go into our shell when we come under pressure. There were chances against South Africa that we never saw on the pitch because we went into our shell a little bit."

Russell has parked the sense of injustice he felt after the Six Nations loss to France last time out, when Scotland were denied a winning try in controversial circumstances.

"We want to get ourselves back on track," he said. "The last few seasons, we've won three out of five games, so we're looking to progress and get more than that this season.

  • Furbank an 'attack-minded' selection
  • Listen: Can Scots continue Calcutta Cup dominance?
  • Trio return for Scots against England
  • Furbank and Lawrence start for England

"So it means winning the next three games, which is no easy feat. We're not satisfied beating one or two teams in this competition. Our expectation and goal is to keep progressing year-on-year after the disappointment against France."

As ever, the preamble to the Calcutta Cup largely revolves around Russell and his unique brand of brilliance. The Bath fly-half will be playing against England for the ninth time.

He lost his first three and has won his most recent three. Sandwiched in between have been the remarkable 25-13 victory - and the famous Russell pass - in 2018 and the even more remarkable 38-38 draw at Twickenham that featured another masterclass from the fly-half in an unforgettable second half.

Russell has won four of his past five Calcutta Cups and has drawn the other, so England will have plans for him.

Like South Africa did in France, England will deploy a blitz defence. The Irishman Felix Jones was on the Springbok coaching ticket at the World Cup and he is with England now, plotting what he hopes will be Russell's downfall, no doubt.

"I'm not sure what England are going to do - fly out of the line and take me out, or if they are going to try to shut me down from the outside, but that's something we will have to figure out in the game," he said.

"We have to be able to adapt. Myself, Sione [Tuipulotu] and Huw [Jones] have to be on the same page. The more aligned we are, the better it will be.

"If they try to shut me down, that might mean we have to go through Sione or Blair [Kinghorn] or somebody else further out to create chances.

"The 10 controls a lot of the attack, but it's not just down to me to create things. We will be looking to use other boys."

Russell was unaware that his rival captain Jamie George suffered a terrible sadness last week when his mother passed away. He had supportive words for a man he holds in high regard.

"I got on really well with Jamie on the Lions tour in 2021," he recalled. "A great man, I'm really sorry to hear that. I'll give him a text now to send my condolences.

"That's a tough thing to deal with. It's terrible for him, but I hope him and his family are OK."

Russell also had words of admiration for George's team, which is a side in transition.

"The World Cup showed how good they can be," he suggested.

"They've won their first two [Six Nations] games and are getting back to where they should be as one of the best teams in the world. Maybe we've had the rub of the green the last few years, but it can change so quickly in sport.

"We can't look back on the last few games and say it has turned in our favour. It's a huge challenge and we have to be at our very best to beat them. We have to be ready for anything."

Highlights of the match between France and Ireland in Marseille in the opening round of the Guinness Six Nations.

ENGLAND BATTLE PAST ITALY IN ROME

A lacklustre start from the visitors paired with a dynamic first-half showing from the hosts saw the Azzurri head into the break 17-14 to the good.

Tries from Paolo Garbisi and Tommaso Allan were the highlights of a sprightly showing in Gonzalo Quesada’s first Test match in charge.

However England remained in touch through a combination of the boot of George Ford and some brief pockets of energy and drive that allowed Elliot Daly to crash over the in the corner in between Italy’s two tries.

It was enough to keep England in touch heading into the interval and they did not look back after the restart.

An entrepreneurial try from Alex Mitchell was the perfect start before Ford kicked England clear and off to a winning start in the Championship despite Monty Ioane's late try.

AZZURRI BURST OUT OF THE BLOCKS

Italy started brightly and gave the visitors an early warning sign with some quick ball that caught Maro Itoje offside, with Allan on hand to slot over the ensuing penalty with just five minutes on the clock.

The Azzurri continued to push for further reward from their quick opening, Paolo Garbisi’s searching cross-field kick a sign of Italy’s expansive ambition, but it was just too long to set Monty Ioane free from English grasps.

The hosts had to wait just two minutes to breakthrough, as Lorenzo Cannone broke the line before offloading to Alessandro Garbisi who dotted down under the posts for his first Guinness Men’s Six Nations try, Allan adding the extras.

That try seemed to spark England into life, with Steve Borthwick’s men responding to the early deficit with new vim and vigour to their attack.

That soon drew a penalty which Ford duly despatched, and the visitors were then had Daly over the try line with 20 minutes on the clock.

If the scorer was a familiar face in English white, it was two new names who were at its heart as Ethan Roots created space out wide with a big carry which Tommy Freeman took full advantage of with a superb darting run to break the line and feed Daly.

Yet just as it seemed England had found their rhythm in Rome, Italy struck back with their second try of the game with a slickly executed move.

Soft hands through the line drew in the English defenders, leaving Juan Ignacio Brex swathes of space to play in Allan, who ran home under the posts before converting his own try.

ENGLAND RALLY AND RESPOND

Just like after Italy’s first try, England responded well, this time marching straight down to the Italian try line with Freeman somehow held up before Ford eventually slotted home another penalty.

Ford’s boot continued to keep England in touch, with the fly-half knocking another one over to ensure England went in at the break with just a three-point deficit.

That pair of penalties proved a crucial platform, as England started the second half well and were ahead for the first time in the contest after just five minutes.

They had the instincts of Mitchell to thank, as the scrum-half spotted the space in the Italian line from the back of a ruck and shrugged off a tackle before diving over.

That score opened up a period of dominance for the visitors, with Ford slotting home another penalty from distance to extend England’s lead to the value of a converted try.

With their advantage in hand, England were able to control the contest in a way they simply weren’t able to in the first-half thanks to relentless Italian pressure and the gap was further widened by another Ford penalty 13 minutes from time.

Italy looked to respond and prevent a contest that at times looked set to promise so much from fully slipping away from them, and a yellow card for Daly for a trip offered a glimmer of hope with five minutes remaining.

Ioane duly took advantage with the clock deep in the red, running clear to dot down and seal a losing bonus point with the aid of Paolo Garbisi's conversion.

england rugby tour 2024

NEWS: New England coach Steve Borthwick’s maiden tour will be to New Zealand in 2024 for a test series against the All Blacks.

England have not played in New Zealand since 2014, when Stuart Lancaster was the head coach and they lost the series 3-0. They have faced the All Blacks only three times in the past eight years.

Borthwick has the Six Nations and four warm-up matches on these shores before the World Cup, which starts in September so there will be no summer tour next year.

Other nations who will be in action include Wales that are due to face Australia, Ireland are primed to go to South Africa and Scotland are set for tests in the Pacific Islands. It is also understood that the plan is for France to visit Argentina and for Italy to play the United States and Canada.

Borthwick has nine tests before the start of the World Cup since taking over as head coach from Eddie Jones. The latter never visited the land of the long white cloud during seven years at the helm as coach.

Five of those tests will come in the Six Nations, plus four World Cup warm-ups, against Wales (twice), Ireland and Fiji in August.

The full schedules for the trips have not been finalised, but it is believed that there are options for teams to add a third test against an emerging nation to their tour programme. For example, England could arrange an extra match against Fiji, Tonga, Samoa or the Māori All Blacks, if they wished to.

These match-ups between southern and northern hemisphere nations could be the last of the fully fledged traditional tours, as the British & Irish Lions will go to Australia in 2025, and then the Nations Championship is set to begin in 2026.

Global rugby executives are still finalising plans for a revamped calendar, with the centrepiece a 24-team, two-division international league with promotion and relegation and a grand final every two years.

If that is introduced by 2026, as planned, it would involve teams playing multiple countries in July and November as part of a league table, rather than the present model, in which stand-alone cross-hemisphere series are played each summer.

England have 'massively evolved' on India tour despite series loss, says Ben Stokes ahead of fifth Test in Dharamsala

England will look to finish their Test series against India on a high with victory in the final Test in Dharamsala, which starts on March 7 live on TNT Sports. England are 3-1 down in the five-Test series but captain Ben Stokes thinks the team has "massively progressed" in certain aspects. Stokes also gave his backing to bowler Ollie Robinson and praised his work ethic.

Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum oversee practice at the HPCA Stadium

Ben Stokes determined to finish on high amid India’s Himalayan peaks

England’s captain says his side have ‘massively evolved’ despite results and the Test team have a spectacular setting to prove it

T he colourful HPCA Stadium is a relative newcomer to Test cricket, being number 114 out of the 122 grounds to have hosted a men’s game. But nestled 1,317m above sea level, with a Toblerone of snow-capped Himalayan peaks as its backdrop and eagles swooping overhead, it is unquestionably among the most breathtaking.

Add the presence of the Dalai Lama, whom England’s cricketers are due to meet on Wednesday, a day out from the fifth Test, and the Tibetan population who live in exile in Dharamsala, and it ranks among the most fascinating, too. Even though India have won the series, those attending the region’s second Test match – its first since Australia lost by eight wickets back in 2017 – should feel pretty blessed.

All of which seems a decent antidote to what is known in cricket as departure lounge syndrome; the collective wave of mental fatigue that can strike a defeated touring side before a series is completed. Not that Ben Stokes views it this way. The England captain is taken by the venue – it is impossible to be anything but, hence the avalanche of photos on social media – but is also confident of motivation regardless of India’s unassailable 3-1 lead.

“I don’t think that anyone is thinking like that,” Stokes said on Tuesday, regarding thoughts turning towards home. “We feel every opportunity to play for England is special. That’s just our mentality and our mindset, regardless of where you are, or how long you’ve been away. But that shouldn’t take away from the fact that this place is pretty special.”

There are, of course, a number of milestones this week, be they 100 Test caps for Jonny Bairstow and Ravichandran Ashwin, Jimmy Anderson needing two wickets for 700, or young Yashasvi Jaiswal simply needing to nudge a single to break Virat Kohli’s Indian record of 655 runs in a Test series against England. Stokes shrugged off his 100th cap earlier in the tour, calling it “just a number”, but the sentiment regarding the buzzing Bairstow was different.

Jimmy Anderson bowls at the HPCA Stadium with the Himalayan peaks behind him

“This is probably going to be more of an emotional thing for Jonny than it ever was for me,” said Stokes. “He’s got his mam, his sister, his partner, his little baby boy and some friends here. Playing for England means so much to him. I’ve been there for a lot of his career, from age-group cricket to playing against him, or with him a lot for England. He’s one of our finest all-format batters and has done some unbelievable things.”

The match can also be viewed as ending the first half of the Bazball project that Bairstow kickstarted in 2022. Stokes does not have a term of office as captain but Brendon McCullum signed a four-year deal as head coach that runs until the end of the 2025-26 Ashes. The New Zealander is not one for overthinking the future – in contrast to what came before – but he is still working within the cycle that England’s Test side has long since operated.

After a breakneck start of 10 wins from 11 that saw a bold new culture embedded, results have tapered off as the quality of opposition has risen, with the ledger now reading: played 22, won 14, lost seven, drawn one (rain). A similar incline comes over the next two years with series against West Indies and Sri Lanka this summer, returns to Pakistan and New Zealand next winter, then two final challenges in 2025 with India at home and the next attempt to regain the urn from Australia.

India v England teams

England (possible): Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root, Bairstow, Stokes (c), Foakes (wk), Hartley, Wood, Anderson, Bashir

India (possible): Sharma (c), Jaiswal, Gill, Patidar, Jadeja, Sarfaraz, Jurel (wk), Ashwin, Kuldeep, Bumrah, Siraj

As such, the end of this tour may be a point at which to take stock; to decide which areas need a refresh. Harry Brook’s expected return is a natural one and will have a knock-on effect at wicketkeeper. The seam stable simply has to evolve, given Anderson’s age and Ollie Robinson’s unreliable fitness. Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir have done enough to challenge Jack Leach’s status as first-choice spinner, unfortunate though this may be.

after newsletter promotion

“If you take the results by themselves you’d say we’ve gone backwards,” said Stokes, offering a wider appraisal of the tour. “But we haven’t. The individuals and the team have massively evolved on this tour. Progression doesn’t always show itself with the results.”

Stokes cited fitness and attitude, even if the middle order have struggled and winning important moments has eluded England. Once again, he pushed back at the latter being a mental issue, pointing to India’s superiority at home. “All you can do is try your nuts off in the nets because that’s where you get better,” he added. “We ain’t been the pushovers like many teams have looked when they’ve come over here.”

Stokes was still mulling his final XI on Tuesday, torn between atmospherics akin to a county fixture in April and Sunil Chauhan, the head groundsman who sports a natty cowboy hat, having prepared a flat, beige pitch. Ashwin, speaking before his personal milestone, said the ground “sometimes feels like an away game in India” but the sense was that it will aid runscoring before taking spin later in the contest.

Not that India do not have all bases covered regardless, the hosts welcoming back Jasprit Bumrah after he missed the fourth Test for a breather. England were considering a return for Mark Wood, most likely for Robinson after last week’s rusty showing. But even if three seamers was the play – Bashir is nursing a sore spinning finger given his workload has entered new territory – the uncapped Gus Atkinson appears likelier.

Whatever the final selection and the scoreline that follows, a memorable week in the Himalayas awaits.

Australian Stockman Rugby is calling for expressions of interest from young men across Australia with rural/regional backgrounds interested joining the team for its upcoming tour to England in October 2024 – applications close 29 February 2024. More details below.

england rugby tour 2024

Stockman Rugby is an Australian Country representative side providing athletic and personal development opportunities to grass-roots rugby union players, with a strong focus on positive conversations around men’s health issues.

Applicants must be available to tour England from 4-25 October, 2024.

While Stockman Rugby aims to subsidise some costs through sponsorship and fundraising, tours are largely self-funded by the touring squad members (tour costs include things like transport, teamwear, accommodation and flights over the three week period).

Ben Stokes: England are no pushovers despite defeat in India

Captain convinced side have taken big stride forward despite series defeat and are desperate to prove it by winning a second Test on tour

Ben Stokes sports a beanie in chilly Himachal Pradesh

Ben Stokes has called on his England team to sign off their tour of India with a win having made “massive progress” and not being “pushovers” despite losing the series with a game to spare.

England won the opener in Hyderabad but have lost the three Tests since and India secured the series before the teams arrived in the stunning Himalayan town of Dharamsala.

Stokes’s side will finalise their team for the fifth Test after looking at the pitch on Wednesday, but were expected to make one change, with Mark Wood returning for Ollie Robinson, who went wicketless on his only appearance of the series , in Ranchi.

Skipper Stokes said heavy rainfall at the weekend meant England expected a lusher pitch, but instead found a “quite bare” surface that “looks an absolutely belting cricket wicket”.

Mark Wood wraps up warm

The outfield has been a long-standing issue, with Australia’s Test a year ago moved to Indore, and problems during the World Cup. It has been relaid, however, and looks much better, with Jonny Bairstow – who will play his 100th Test – praising the “brilliant job” done by the ground staff since England were last here in October for his 100th one-day international.

At 1,500 metres above sea level, there is a chill in the air comparable to an early season County Championship fixture, and England have swapped their trademark bucket hats for woolly ones, and also received a shipment of puffer jackets.

Seamers tend to have more say here than at other venues in India but the pale wicket – which was used in a Ranji Trophy match last month – is likely to persuade England to stick with their two young spinners, Shoaib Bashir (who has a slightly sore spinning finger, after a heavy workload in Ranchi) and Tom Hartley, rather than selecting a third seamer, either Robinson or the uncapped Gus Atkinson. Stokes said the team would once again be selected without his own bowling in mind, but it is likely he will bowl a few overs for the first time since the Lord’s Ashes Test in June.

Stokes promised there would be none of the “departure lounge syndrome” he has experienced on previous tours and is confident his team have kicked on in India. That is despite the 3-1 scoreline being the same after four Tests as it was on their last visit to India in 2021. There has been a general dip in England’s form over the last year that has seen Stokes’s overall record as captain drop from 10 wins in 11 Tests to 14 in 22. Even if the series is gone, they have the carrot of being the first touring team to win two Tests on a tour of India since 2012.

“We want to win this week,” Stokes said. “The message again, in the huddle this morning, [was that] we’ve been on so many India tours, you know what it’s like when you get to an end of a long one that sometimes you start thinking about the end of the game.

“Whereas honestly, I don’t think that anyone is thinking like that because every opportunity we feel at the moment is special to play for England. Because we’ve lost the series, it doesn’t mean that this game is different to what last week was or the week before. We are playing international cricket and playing for England. Playing for England is the biggest and most wonderful thing to be able to do as a cricketer.

England's huddle

“If you take the result by itself you’d say, ‘Oh, we’ve going backwards’, but we haven’t. The individuals and the team have massively evolved on this tour. Even before we got here, I hadn’t seen the group for a very long time because of the rehab on my knee, but progression doesn’t always show itself with the results. I think the way in which everyone committed to becoming a better version of themselves from when we last played was quite obvious.

“Everyone’s fitter. Everyone was just – I don’t want to say there’s more desire – but it was just a really different feel around how we operated from the summer before [2023]. When you know that you’re part of something special, you want to work your nuts off to keep your place in the team.

“We’ve definitely evolved as a team. Just because the scoreline at the moment reads 3-1, it doesn’t mean that we’ve gone backwards. There are lots of these things that we have massively progressed on as a team whilst out on this tour.

“We haven’t been the pushovers like many teams have looked like when they’ve come over here because of how dominant a force India are in their home conditions.”

Stokes hailed Bairstow – who will be one of two players bringing up their Test century, alongside India’s Ravichandran Ashwin – as one of “England’s finest all-format batters”.

Bairstow, who is joined for the occasion by a large contingent of family and friends, admitted it would be an emotional moment.

“Like in every game, I’ll put my best foot forward,” Bairstow said. “No matter what it is, I’ll be going out there, chewing my gum, puffing my chest out and trying to have a good time with the other 10 blokes out there. Whatever the situation is, we’ll be going out there with smiles on our faces, like we have done in the whole series.

“I’m proud. You know what I’m like, an emotional guy, so yeah – get the tissues ready.”
