Evergreen Museum & Library

Housed in a former Gilded Age mansion surrounded by Italian-style gardens, Evergreen Museum & Library is at once an intimate collection of fine and decorative arts, rare books and manuscripts assembled by two generations of the philanthropic Garrett family, and a vibrant, inspirational venue for contemporary artists. In the mid-19th century, when railroads were king, Baltimore's Garrett family ruled the rails. Evergreen, their home for two generations (1878-1942), is a superb example of Gilded Age architecture set on 26 landscaped acres in Baltimore and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed; Boston’s Old State House, where the Boston Massacre and the American Revolution began; Washington D.C.’s National Mall, where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech; Virginia’s Jamestown settlement, the country’s first colony; Charleston’s Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired; New York’s Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants were introduced to their new home. All of these sites, significant to America’s history, can be visited, toured, and admired. While visiting one of the many historical sites around the country, consider the importance in preserving these sites.

Field Ecology

This program will focus on intensive group and individual field research on current topics in ecological science. These topics will include forest structure, ecosystem ecology, effects of forest management, ecological restoration, riparian ecology, fire history, bird abundance and monitoring, insect-plant interactions, and disturbance ecology. Students will be expected to intensively use the primary literature and student-driven field research to address observations about ecological composition, structure, and function. Multiple independent and group research projects will form the core of our work in local forests of the South Puget Sound lowlands, national forests, national parks, state forests, and other relevant natural settings. Students are expected to hit the ground running and should develop research projects for the entire quarter within the first several weeks of the program.

Through a series of short, intensive field exercises, students will hone their skills in observation, developing testable hypotheses, and designing ways to test those hypotheses. We will also explore field techniques and approaches in ecology, and especially approaches related to measuring plant and avian biodiversity. Students will have the option to participate in field trips to remote sites in the Pacific Northwest. Research projects will be formally presented by groups and individuals at the end of the quarter. Finally, student research manuscripts will be created throughout the quarter, utilizing a series of intensive multi-day paper-writing workshops. We will emphasize identification of original field research problems in forest habitats, experimentation, data analyses, oral presentation of findings, and writing in scientific journal format.

Registration

College-level biology, college-level chemistry, and college-level precalculus, or calculus, or statistics. Students should also have previous credits in botany, taxonomy, ornithology, or zoology. Ability to use plant taxonomic keys and identify birds from song is especially encouraged.

Academic Details

plant and wildlife ecology, environmental studies, habitat management, ecological restoration, and conservation biology

$350 fee covers a field trip fee for an extended overnight trip to North-Central Washington/The Sinlahekin Valley ($300) and a required lab fee ($50).

Students who successfully complete the work in this program can expect 16 upper division science credits. Credits may be earned in field ecology, statistics, and project-based ecological topics.

What can we learn about ourselves and our values by looking at flowers? In the exhibition Arrangements , artists look at the many meanings attributed to cut flowers, gardens, and wild plants to explore how people use flowers to communicate all kinds of ideas. The artworks in the exhibition go beyond ideas of beauty to take an unexpected look at this familiar floral subject matter.

Moscow Food Co-Op celebrates expansion

UI addition brings local ingredients, healthy food options to campus, expands community

LUKE HOLLISTER | DAILY EVERGREEN FILE

Businesses interested in joining Moscow Food Co-op’s sustainability efforts can reach the co-op at [email protected] . More information about the co-op’s efforts can be found on their website.

Marco McCray , Evergreen reporter January 12, 2018

The Moscow Food Co-op recently opened their expansion on the University of Idaho campus.

The business was founded in 1973, and now has locations at 121 E 5th Street in downtown Moscow as well as the Campus Christian Center at UI.

Co-op General Manager Melinda Schab said one of the most unique aspects of the company is the cooperative business model.

“I would say [the Moscow Food Co-op] is a community, and we happen to sell groceries,” Schab said.

The Moscow Food Co-op is co-owned by about 8,000 people throughout the Palouse. The co-owners vote to appoint nine board members on a panel representing the company. Only existing co-owners are eligible to run for board member positions.

Alisa Melior, the campus store manager, began her involvement with the Moscow Food Co-op about 20 years ago and attributes the store’s continued success to the strong sense of unity within the organization.

“[The Moscow Food Co-op] keeps itself relevant by really listening to the needs of its members and community,” Melior said.

It costs $10 a year for ownership or $150 for a lifetime ownership. According to the Moscow Food Co-op website, benefits of becoming an owner include discounts at over 80 local businesses and a 15 percent discount off all store items on owner appreciation days.

The store is dedicated to providing its customers with healthy food options by locally sourcing the ingredients. It offers organic fruits and vegetables, vegan and gluten-free items, and dairy alternatives. All prepared products, including bakery and grab-and-go items, are made in-house.

Marketing Manager Alycia Rock said The Moscow Food Co-op acts as a bridge between local farmers and the community year-round due to the weather-driven, seasonal nature of farmers’ markets.

“There’s no cutting corners,” said Rock. “We do everything with integrity and honesty, and we can offer that to the community.”

The Moscow Food Co-op provides educational community outreach programs. The company also sponsors a program called Community Contributions, where an individual or a business can apply for donations.

According to their website, due to limited budget, applicants are encouraged to send in donation requests six weeks prior to their estimated need.

The business looks to continue its expansion and currently plans on bringing a location to Pullman and possibly WSU, Schab said.

The Moscow Food Co-op is open Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
