Usher’s Wild Ride
By Vanessa Grigoriadis
Vanessa Grigoriadis
U SHER RIPS A BASEBALL CAP OFF HIS HEAD, smacks it down on a dressing-room countertop and growls, “Fuck this motherfucking shit!” A minute ago, he pulled up in his silver Hummer to the Fox Theatre, the ornate 1920s palace in downtown Atlanta, to begin filming a video for his summer tour, but suddenly he started ranting and raving, then sprinted up four flights of stairs to this lounge, three paunchy crew guys trailing as he went by in a blur. They stagger to the doorway, huffing and puffing. “Motherfuckers in here now!” Usher yells.
“I’m getting here late — for real — and still nothing’s organized,” he says, his normally adorable face, still childlike at twenty-five, contorted with rage. “Venue not what it’s supposed to be, dancers all around downstairs and ain’t supposed to be: As usual, everyone’s tripping and I’m un-abreast of the motherfucking plans. Nigga’s got to do what a nigga’s got to do, and I ain’t doing it. I ain’t gonna do it.” He grabs his hat and kicks the door open. “I be out.”
Then he pops back in, smiling a goony grin: “April Fools’!
“You was gonna lose all your hair, man,” says Usher.
“You were gonna soil your pants from shit heat,” says one of the crew to another.
The April Fools’ punking has been going on all day. First Usher called his A&R rep and said a producer he once had a beef with had come by his house with a baseball bat and smashed his elaborate glass-plate front door, so he’d grabbed a gun and was driving over to his house — “I’m gonna handle this like a real man! I’m gonna kill this dude!” Next, he called a friend and told him that he was about to commit suicide because of all the pressure of his career, and then he told his mother, who is also his manager, that he wouldn’t drive an Aston Martin in the tour video, as planned, unless he had an endorsement deal — “Aston Martin think they gonna use me? Use me? I don’t think so.” He even called his publicist and said he didn’t want to do this story. “I sold millions of albums in my time and never been on the cover of ROLLING STONE before?” he says. “Shoot, I thought they don’t put black faces on those covers.”
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
Usher leans back in the dressing-room chair, content with the havoc he has wreaked. His body, cut like a professional tennis player’s, hums with energy, and he’s wearing jeans slung so low that you not only see the waistband of his boxers but can actually make out cheeks. His personal assistant and best friend, Keith Thomas, starts to trim his hair and the room goes quiet, the buzz of the razor and snip of the scissors all there is to hear. Then Thomas breaks up. “The best was waking Usher up this morning,” he says, snickering. “We were like, ‘Forget 1.1 million! You sold 2 million albums yesterday!’ He was all, ‘Duh, I did?'”
Usher laughs, and then he nods slowly, staring at his reflection in the mirror. “Yes, sir,” he says.

It’s 2004 all over again.
“Mean Girls” topped the box office, and fans can’t get enough of Usher and Underoath announced they’re going on tour to celebrate their breakthrough album “They’re Only Chasing Safety.”
From September through December, the ‘They’re Only Chasing Safety 20th Anniversary Tour’ will take the screamo metalcore quintet along with special guest Static Dress to theatres, ballrooms, event centers, pavilions, and music halls all over North America.
That includes gigs at New York City’s Palladium Times Square on Friday, Sept. 20 and Sayreville, NJ’s Starland Ballroom on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
“This is going to be like nothing we’ve ever done,” the band shared on Instagram .
“(We’re going to perform) ‘They’re Only Chasing Safety’ in full every night plus another set of songs voted on by each city…Let’s get nuts.”
For those who can’t wait to scream themselves hoarse with Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie later this year, you can pick up tickets for all 35 shows as soon as today.
Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 19, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.
Underoath’s fourth studio album was released on June 15, 2004.
If it’s been ages since you’ve listened, the lead single was “Reinventing Your Exit;” other big tracks include “A Boy Brushed Red Living In Black And White” and “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door.”
Critics reacted favorably to the record; the band “(does) a decent job of integrating the honey and the vinegar,” Alex Henderson of AllMusic wrote.

Usher to receive keys to Chattanooga in Tennessee: 'I look forward to celebrating'
Usher is showing some hometown love before he goes on tour .
The " Ruin " singer, 45, is due to return to his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, later this month and receive the keys to the city as well as "proclamations from state and local government," the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County announced Wednesday.
"The city of Chattanooga provided a spark that ignited the fire in me to pursue my dreams as a singer and I’m thankful for the support I received from so many great family members, friends, and mentors so early in my journey. Thank you for the honor, I look forward to celebrating with you all," Usher said in a press release.
How to go to Usher's homecoming in Chattanooga, Tennessee
The event, "Coming Home: A Celebration of Usher," will take place at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on April 20 and is free for ticketholders. Guests can reserve up to two tickets at cha.city/usher starting on Friday at 10 a.m. until sold out.
The event is in partnership with The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Chattanooga Business Elite.
"The pride in Chattanooga during Usher iconic Super Bowl halftime show was palpable," Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly said in a release. "We know as a smaller city we punch way above our weight when it comes to the talent our city produces, and Usher is one of the finest examples of that talent."
Kelly added: "He’s going to feel the love when he comes home to McKenzie Arena on April 20th. I look forward to seeing y’all there."
Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp called Usher "one the great talents who have come through our public school system."
"I hope other young boys and girls across Hamilton County see USHER’S rise to the world stage and know that they have the same potential," Wamp stated in the release.

Usher's upcoming Past Present Future Tour begins in August
The multi-Grammy-winning singer's appearance at his hometown comes after his headlining Super Bowl 58 halftime show in February and ahead of his Usher: Past Present Future Tour in celebration of his album " Coming Home ."
The multi-city arena tour starts with the North American leg in August and ends in November followed by a European leg beginning in March 2025. The tour does not include a stop in his hometown.
Usher talks Super Bowl show, reveals most 'personal' song on new album: 'Oh, I'm ruined'
Usher ended his sold-out Las Vegas residency in December after 100 shows, but many people have called on the "King of R&B" to take his talent on the road.
"Vegas has offered an opportunity to celebrate the past and celebrate the records, the No. 1s, the connection to the audience, the entertainment," Usher told USA TODAY for The Essentials series in November. "And then the Super Bowl moment offers not only that, but then a segue into the next chapter," teasing "Coming Home."
The singer/songwriter's chart-topping 2004 album "Confessions" has sold over 15 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling R&B album of the 21st century by a male artist.
"Confessions" celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, so it's possible he'll incorporate some throwback songs on this tour.
