Zambezi River Cruise FAQ's

Before booking a Zambezi River Cruise in Victoria Falls, please read some of the below more frequently asked questions about cruising on the Zambezi River in Victoria Falls.

Guests of all ages are welcome of a Zambezi River Cruise. Children under 12 pay half price and children 2 and younger are free.

Although wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on a Zambezi River cruise, with the banks of the Zambezi National Park flanking each cruise, you’ll be likely to spot elephants, hippos, crocodiles, a range of antelope species and a range of exciting birdlife.

Your safety and enjoyment is our main concern. Your Victoria Falls River Cruise may be delayed due to weather conditions. Normally rainstorms only last about half an hour, so be patient,  we will try to ensure you get to experience your cruise. If it starts raining while you are on your cruise, rain flaps on the side of the boat will drop down to keep you dry.

National Parks fees are not part of the Zambezi River Cruise price. They are an additional fee charged by the Government to help maintain the Zambezi River and the surrounding National Park areas. These fees are to paid on arrival before your cruise and are US$10 per adult and US$5 per child.

The water level of the Zambezi River varies remarkably throughout the year. The Victoria Falls region receives seasonal rainfall, and therefore the amount of water flowing over the Victoria Falls changes drastically.

The water level is at its lowest point around November each year. At this time of year the water falls mainly in the deeper section of the river on the Zimbabwean side of the Falls. During the low water season some areas of the Zambian side dry up completely leaving a gigantic crack of exposed bare rock in the earth. This may not be as spectacular as the Victoria Falls in full flood.

The water level is at its highest between April and May. During these months the Victoria Falls are a thundering wall of falling water and the spray from the falls can obscure the view.

So which time of year is best to experience a Zambezi River Cruise in Victoria Falls? The real answer is all year round. During the dryer months between June and September you are more likely to spot wildlife on the banks of the river. However a Zambezi River Cruise is a "not to be missed" opportunity no matter what time of year you are visiting Victoria Falls.

During the Jurassic Period (150-200 million years ago), volcanic activity resulted in thick basalt deposits covering large parts of Southern Africa. As the lava cooled and solidified, cracks appeared in the hard basalt crust, which were filled with clay and lime. Erosion and the course of the mighty Zambezi River cut through these softer materials, forming the first of a series of waterfalls.

Communication with Tongesai from Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours was excellent and he came to pick us up on time. He drove us to the border and handed us to a Botswana tour operator and we had a great day in Chobe, which consisted of a 3-hour game drive, a good lunch and 3-hour boat ride. After the tour, we met Tongesai at the border and he drove us back to our lodge. All in all, everything went as planned and Tongesai provided friendly service. We were a bit concerned about the weather, as we were visiting Chobe NP during the rainy season (March 2024), but the weather turned out to be very warm and sunny. We saw a lot of animals, such as lions, hippos, elephants, giraffes, crocodiles and buffalos. Boat drive also offered a nice perspective as you could get very close to the animals. • Scenic07808551758 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing experience! Our guide Tongesai Mutematsaka was very reliable, concientous and accommodating. Our 9 day tour which included Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Chobe Park and Okavango Delta, Botswana went very smoothly. The local guides who led excursions and game drives were all knowledgeable and excellent. We enjoyed seeing elephants up close at the water hole at Elephant Sands, the meerkat tour at Planet Baobab, two beautifil sunset cruises and walking safaris, one viewing rhinos, helicoptor rides over Victoria Falls and over Okovango Delta. The Mokoro dug-out canoe experience viewing hippos and crocodiles along with many birds was awesome and, of course, the game drives and variety of animals were amazing. Accommodations and food were very good and the Boma restaurant with local food and entertainment was a fun experience. I had a minor health issue in Maun on a Sunday night and Tongesai was very helpful and drove my daughter to the local hospital pharmacy to get a medication. My daughter made all the financial arrangements and found Cultural Vibes to be very competitive for the services offered. If you go during winter there be sure to pack a down jacket, base layer, gloves and hat. The morning and evening game drives can be cold! • SamWard1D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Safari Experience ever!!! There are sooo many fantastic things I could say about Cultural Vibes and Tongesai. From the first day when I messages him about making this trip possible, he has been nothing but helpful and a very good communicator. He put together an amazing itinerary for us to do Kruger in South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and Chobe in Botswana. He made the entire booking process easy and really put our mind at ease at booking this major vacation from thousands miles away. Kruger started off absolutely amazing with the partner company that he is aligned with. They were absolutely amazing and provided us with the absolute best safari experience. Then in Zimbabwe, we got the personal tour of the beautiful Victoria Falls by Tongesai himself. He was very knowledgeable and truly cared about making our experience fantastic. This continued into our day trip to Botswana which was also fantastic. Tongesai chooses great accommodations and places to eat which made our trip even more fantastic. I have many family and friends that are looking to take a similar trip, and I would not hesitate to recommend Cultural Vibes to them for their vacation! Read more Written June 21, 2023
  • joycemB2306IK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely wonderful! I can't say enough good things about this fantastic tour. For a very reasonable price, the tour included sunset and morning river cruises, 2 game drives, a helicopter ride over Victoria Falls, a guided tour of the Falls park, a dinner & drum show, meals, rooms at a very comfortable lodge and transport from hotel and to airport. The guides were all great (Garikai was exceptional); very knowledgeable and personable and patient with us "older" ladies. Cultural Vibes obviously put a lot of thoughtful consideration into how to make their guests feel comfortable and welcome. The whole tour was truly exceptional. Read more Written May 8, 2023
  • MichelleKretz 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great adventure in Zimbabwe We had a wonderful time in Zimbabwe. We spent some days in Hawange National Park and could enjoy the wilderness in this beautiful nature. We had lovely lodge called Hide Lodge. Some days later we visited the Victoria falls. The helicopter flight was amazing and the guided tour very interessting with our guide Tongesai. We also did a canoe tour which I can also really recommend. It was so much fun and a bit of adventure too. We also did the sunset cruise, the rino walk and the Chobe river. All of that did we enjoy. But the rino walk was a bit short. It was just one short walk, the rest of the time we had a safari there. But it was still impressiv to come to those animal close. I can really recommend the Chobe river. It's just great to have a safari by boat, so that you can enjoy the wildlife in another way. Cultural vibes travel an tour did a great job. Everything was well organised and our guide Tongesai was always here for us to answer questions and to have a good talk. Thank you very much for this amazing time!!! One day, we will come back! :-) Read more Written April 25, 2023

It's a cool restaurant in one of the townships and is quite fun. We highly recommend this place for everyone. If you're looking for good food, good drinks, and a unique experience, this is the place. It's also a great place to hang out with friends, have some snacks and a few drinks, soak in the Zimbabwean atmosphere and chill. Highly recommended. 10/10 We'll upload a video of the place to our blog (1000daysoftravel.com) later if anyone wants to see more. Read more Written April 25, 2023
  • ZR07 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing local village experience We were in Vic Falls for 3 days and did all the main attractions but had half a day available. My wife booked a helicopter tour then added the village visit and Dusty Road dining experience. All 3 were great but the Monde Village visit was eye-opening and is a must-do. This Victoria Falls visit was an extension to our 2-week trip in South Africa and neighboring countries, but the village visit is easily one of the best experiences of the entire trip! We'll post a longer review and YouTube video (accessible from my blog, 1000daysoftravel.com) in a few weeks. We would like to share this experience with as many people as possible, and encourage everyone to experience it. We also did the Dusty Road dining experience and the helicopter ride. Dusty Road is very nice while helicopter ride is as expected (we've done one before). We thank our tour guide and out host for this incredible experience! Read more Written April 25, 2023
  • Paul11962 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles All my dreams have come true I found this company a few days before my trip through Safari Booking. Tongesai Mutematsaka promptly and thoroughly answered all my questions even late in the evening. We quickly agreed on everything. Upon arrival, he met me at the airport and took me to the hotel. All days of stay, he fully provided the embodiment of all my desires. On the first day, he organized a boat tour of the Zambezi. On the second, he took me to Botswana, where his friend organized first a three-hour boat tour along the Chobe River, and then a three-hour tour of the Chobe National Park. It was amazing. Huge crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, giraffes, elephants, antelopes were literally at a distance of 3-4 meters. We also saw many other animals. Only lions could not be seen. On the third day, first there was an excursion to the Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe, and then from Zambia. Impressions are very strong. I highly recommend to see both sides (for this, put down a KAZA visa upon arrival). On the fourth day, a transfer to the airport was also carried out. Separately, I want to emphasize the reliability of Tongesai Mutematsaka. He was never late, fulfilled all my wishes, did not ask for extra money. And the prices are probably among the lowest in Victoria Falls. Let his car not very new, but reliable and he drives it very carefully. During the entire stay, there was not a single problem. I highly recommend! Read more Written March 4, 2023

Get to Know the Zambezi River

Before diving into these tips on taking a Zambezi cruise safari, let’s look at the river itself and why it is so important to the region and Africa as a whole.

The Zambezi River is one of Africa’s most iconic and spectacular waterways, flowing through six countries in Southern Africa: Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. With a length of approximately 2,574 kilometres (1,599 miles), it is the fourth-longest river in Africa.

Drone shot of the Zambezi River

The river begins its journey in the northwest corner of Zambia, where it emerges from a marshy area called the Zambezi Marshlands. It then meanders eastward, forming the border between Zambia and Namibia for a short distance before entering Angola. In Angola, it takes a southward turn, forming the border between Namibia and Angola, and eventually flows back into Zambia.

As you embark on your Zambezi River cruise, you’ll witness the raw power and grandeur of the world-famous Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Zambezi River, with its impressive cascades, creates a thundering spectacle as it plunges into the Batoka Gorge, enveloping the area in mist and creating a mesmerizing rainbow. The sheer magnitude of this natural wonder is an awe-inspiring sight that will leave you in awe.

In addition to its natural wonders, the Zambezi River has played a significant role in the lives of the people living in the region. It serves as a vital water source for agriculture, supports local communities with fishing opportunities, and offers tourism opportunities, including Victoria Falls river cruises, Zambezi cruise safaris, and canoe safaris.

The Zambezi River’s beauty, power, and ecological importance make it a captivating destination for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking a unique African experience.

Whether you choose to explore its waters by boat, witness the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, or simply relax on its banks and take in the breathtaking scenery, the Zambezi River promises an unforgettable journey through one of Africa’s most remarkable natural wonders.

So, get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey along the Zambezi River, where every twist and turn promises a new discovery. Let us be your virtual guide as we navigate through the tips and insights for a remarkable Zambezi River cruise in Victoria Falls.

Tips for Taking a Victoria Falls River Cruise

1) take a zambezi cruise safari in the dry season.

The best time of year to take a Zambezi River cruise is generally during the dry season, which typically runs from May to October. During this period, the river’s water levels are lower, allowing for better visibility of wildlife along the banks and in the river itself.

The dry season also offers more stable weather conditions with less rainfall, making it a comfortable and enjoyable time to be on the water.

Additionally, during the dry season, the Zambezi River is less likely to experience heavy flow , resulting in calmer waters for a smoother and more tranquil cruise experience. The reduced water levels may also expose sandbanks and islands, providing opportunities for closer wildlife encounters and bird watching.

Two boats on the Zambezi River

It’s important to note that the exact timing can vary slightly from year to year, and it’s always recommended to check local weather and river conditions before planning your cruise. If you’re interested in specific wildlife sightings, such as migratory bird species or certain animal behaviours, it’s advisable to research their seasonal patterns to align your visit accordingly.

That being said, it’s worth mentioning that the Zambezi River can be a captivating destination year-round, and each season has its unique charm.

I took a Victoria Falls boat cruise during the wet season (November to April) which has higher water levels and lush greenery and enjoyed the experience. On top of that, the falls were in full force which was a mindblowing sight.

2) Pick the Victoria Falls River Cruise That’s For You

The Zambezi River offers a variety of cruise experiences throughout the day, catering to different preferences and occasions. Here are the different types of Zambezi River cruises based on specific timings:

Sunrise Cruises

Sunrise cruises are a wonderful way to start your day on the Zambezi River. These cruises usually depart early in the morning, allowing you to witness the tranquil beauty of the river as the sun rises. It’s a peaceful and serene experience, perfect for nature enthusiasts and those looking to capture the soft morning light and the river’s awakening wildlife.

Lunch Cruises

Lunch cruises provide a delightful midday experience on the Zambezi River. These cruises often depart around midday, offering a leisurely and scenic journey while enjoying a delicious meal onboard. You can enjoy the flavours of local cuisine, soak up the views, and perhaps even spot wildlife along the riverbanks during this relaxing cruise.

Dinner Cruises

Dinner cruises on the Zambezi River are an enchanting and romantic experience. These cruises typically depart in the early evening, allowing you to enjoy a stunning sunset and the transition into a starry night sky. Enjoy dinner accompanied by music and a soothing ambience, you can revel in the beauty of the river and create lasting memories.

That said, dinner cruises are offered on larger boats which makes for a less intimate and peaceful experience.

Sunset Cruises

Sunset cruises are among the most popular types of Zambezi River cruises. Departing in the late afternoon, these cruises provide a magical experience as you witness the breathtaking colours of the setting sun reflecting off the water.

It’s a serene and captivating journey that allows you to unwind, enjoy the scenery, and observe the wildlife that congregates near the river at this time.

Each of these cruises offers a unique perspective and ambience, allowing you to connect with the Zambezi River in different ways. Whether you prefer the serenity of a sunrise, the indulgence of a meal, the romance of an evening, or the awe-inspiring beauty of a sunset, there is a Zambezi River cruise tailored to suit your needs.

3) Take a Zambezi River Cruise that Includes Snacks

If you aren’t taking a dinner cruise, be sure to select a Zambezi River cruise that includes snacks. You will be out on the river for a couple of hours in the heat and may get hungry. Most operators include drinks so it’s also a good idea to have something in your stomach.

I took a Ra-Ikane river tour which included a small bar paired with excellent bar snacks.

4) Take a Ra-Ikane Sunset Cruise in Victoria Falls

Although you can take a Victoria Falls boat cruise in the morning or for lunch, departing early evening offers the best overall experience. Taking a Ra-Ikane sunset cruise in Victoria Falls offers the most intimate and relaxing experience.

A sunset cruise in Victoria Falls offers a truly magical and memorable experience. Animals are more active during this time so you can witness a vibrant array of wildlife. This includes elephants, hippos, and various bird species, as they come to the riverbanks. The opportunity to observe these majestic creatures against the backdrop of a stunning sunset is truly remarkable.

A Ra-Ikane Zambezi River cruise offers an exceptional and immersive experience. With small, luxurious boats and silent electric-powered operation, the intimate setting allows for a personalized journey without disturbing wildlife. Up-close encounters with animals create memorable wildlife interactions.

Knowledgeable guides provide insightful commentary, enriching your understanding of the ecosystem. The scenic beauty, especially during sunset, offers breathtaking views and culinary delights add to the indulgence of the experience, showcasing local flavours.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic experience or simply want to create lasting memories, the idyllic setting, gentle boat sway, and breathtaking views make it the perfect choice. With opportunities for photography, you can capture the changing colours of the sky, silhouettes of wildlife, and the cascading water, ensuring that the beauty of the experience stays with you long after the cruise ends.

5) Bring Sunscreen

That said, a sunset cruise in Victoria Falls can be very hot. Until the sun dips low enough, the cover in your boat may not be enough to keep you out of the rays. I got roasted on our Victoria Falls boat cruise and spent most of the ride rotating seats.

If your Victoria Falls sunset cruise is busy, you may not have this option. Best to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat that can also cover your neck .

6) Don’t Forget Your Camera

Taking a Victoria Falls river cruise gets you the unique opportunity to see wildlife from the water. In a sense, it is very much a Zambezi cruise safari. As such, don’t forget your camera!

Close up of a crocodile on land in Zimbabwe

Having a good quality camera and zoom lens is recommended as you won’t get as close to some of the animals as you would on a traditional safari. That said, a good cell phone camera works in a pinch.

Man taking photo of a sunset with his iphone from the bow of a Victoria Falls river cruise

On my Zambezi cruise safari, I saw plenty of hippos coming up for air as well as a pair getting out of the water for an evening stroll. We also saw plenty of crocodiles, colourful birds, and antelope.

7) Take a Chobe River Safari

To increase your chances of seeing animals from the water, I highly recommend taking a Chobe River safari from Victoria Falls.

The Chobe River flows through Botswana and forms part of the Botswana-Namibia border. It’s a tributary of the Zambezi River and is renowned for its exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.

Hippo in the Zambezi River

During the dry season, the river attracts a diverse range of animals, including herds of elephants, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species. A Chobe River safari offers a chance to get up close to the wildlife and explore the picturesque landscapes.

The Chobe River also provides a habitat for a rich variety of bird species, making it a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The full-day Chobe River tour starts early AM with pickup from your Victoria Falls hotel and includes transport across the border and then to your boat. It is a full-day outing, getting you back to Victoria Falls late afternoon.

This tour gets you the best of both worlds combining a Victoria Falls river cruise with a chance of seeing a wider range of wildlife.

Best Place to Stay in Victoria Falls to Enjoy a Zambezi River Cruise

After my Rovos Rail journey to Victoria Falls , I stayed at the amazing Palm River Hotel . On top of it being a top-notch lodge with an amazing restaurant, they operate a Zambezi cruise safari company from their front lawn! This made taking a Victoria Falls river cruise super convenient and helped me maximize my short visit to Zimbabwe.

Taking a Zambezi River cruise in Victoria Falls is an experience that should not be missed. To make the most of your adventure, remember to choose the right type of cruise that aligns with your preferences, whether it’s a sunrise, lunch, dinner, or sunset cruise.

If you want to make the most of your time on the water, you book a Ra-Ikane for an intimate and luxurious experience.

Take advantage of knowledgeable guides who can enhance your understanding of wildlife and the ecosystem and don’t forget your camera to capture the stunning scenery, wildlife encounters, and breathtaking sunsets. The Magic of a River Safari Through Zimbabwe

F rom my seat on the pontoon boat, I squeal in excitement at the splinter of gray I see in the distance. I almost missed it, despite the attempts of my fellow travelers to aim my gaze, but the flapping ears give him away.

Tucked up on the hill, deep in a green cluster of Zambezi teak trees, his telltale wrinkled grey skin and sturdy legs at first seemed like just another tree in the bush. But once those ears flap, there’s no denying the majesty of an African elephant.

From his perch at the front of the boat on the Chobe River , our guide and captain Emmanuel Maruza, doesn’t attempt to mask his own excitement. “Look at that,” he says, mostly to himself as he maneuvers the boat closer to shore. “Amazing. Amazing.”

It is day three of a nine-day unforgettable African river adventure. The ambitious CroisiEurope itinerary takes a maximum of 16 guests across four countries: South Africa , Namibia , Botswana, and Zimbabwe. In each, we spend time on land with the people and animals. But in three of the four, there’s a bonus: time spent cruising the continents’ scenic and vital waterways.

Having the opportunity to explore from both land and water makes booking with CroisiEurope appealing, and it’s the European cruise company’s first foray into Africa. Most luxury African safari operators whisk guests away to a plush lodge and then offer twice-a-day open-jeep safari rollouts into the wild. CroisiEurope’s African Dream itinerary offers a similar lodge stay (it owns two lavish properties on the edge of the Zambezi River where Namibia borders Botswana), but takes it a step further with multiple trips out on water safaris and a three-night stay on one of two intimate houseboats in Zimbabwe. The advantages of exploring the countries by both land and water are almost immediately evident.

On the land tour of Chobe National Park in Botswana, animals are everywhere: Lions lazing in the tall grass on the roadside, giraffes gracefully crossing the savannah, warthogs bumbling past Cape buffalo who seem oblivious to the Oxpeckers on their own backs.

You don’t have to get on the water to see the wildlife. There are more than 50,000 elephants—my favorite wildlife sighting—that freely roam in and out of the fenceless Chobe National Park, alone. But there’s no question that cruising the region’s rivers will amplify the experience.

The rivers and lakes we traverse are calm. Small ripples across the glassy surface and the occasional bubbles around us are reminders that life—crocodiles and hippos mostly—lie beneath. Reeds and mangroves line the shores on the rides out from the lodge, barely moving in the absence of heavy breeze despite the birds nimbly balanced on their tips. And it’s not long before the gentle hum of the motor becomes almost meditative, and our small group settles into a quiet as we watch hippos yawn and grunt from the land and the water in reverent silence.

The animals look different from the water, too. The perspective change means that instead of looking down on them from the height of the jeep, you’re gazing up or across. Kudus seem larger, hippos more foreboding. And you’re encountering them in places that feel almost intimate: Elephants bathing in the shallows of the river amongst a field of water lilies, crocs sunning on the shore and then slithering into the water beneath the boat. You feel smaller on the water. More vulnerable.

It's a feeling that stays with us when we eventually move to CroisiEurope’s luxury houseboat in Zimbabwe. There, we take turns boarding smaller boats, perfect for sundowner cruises, scooting up to reedy mounds to listen to the birds as the sun sets or zigzagging through sun-bleached Mopane trees on afternoon fishing jaunts. And with no other boats in sight, early risers share the morning with the animals as they start their day. I watch hippos shake the sleep off their backs and head back to the water, and elephant moms nurse their babies and meander the short grass just beyond the shore.

The trip is not all slow cruising and shoreline searching. In South Africa, we trace the life of Nelson Mandela through the Apartheid Museum, on Impalila Island in Namibia we walk the villages with a resident guide, and in Zimbabwe we take in the stunning Victoria Falls by foot and helicopter. Emotional moments abound on this trip and adrenaline is in no short supply.

The moments are all incredible in their own right, but for me the highlight remains that first glimpse on day three and the surprise that followed. As it turned out, the elephant I saw wasn’t alone.

The whistle of tree branches being pulled and broken gives them away. Three adult elephants and a few babies come forward toward us. Our boat backs up to give them space, but we remain close enough to hear them slurp and splash as they drink and dip in the water.

When it’s time to go, we erupt in a smattering of giggles and chatter. A shared moment on a trip where magic seems to flow as easily as the waters beneath us.
