Latest Attraction - Sky Bridge Tour

The new attraction, Sky Bridge Tour was launched on 24 July 2020. Visitors can walk on top of Seoul Sky Observatory with the bridge connecting to Lotte World Tower’s two structures at the peak.

The outdoor bridge provides stunning 360-degree view of Seoul. It is 11m long and 541m above the ground.

Starting from Sky Station at 117th floor where visitors will be briefed on the safety instructions and put on the gears before venturing outdoor.

How to Get to Lotte World in Seoul (The Easiest Way)

Take the Subway Line 2 or Line 8 to Jamsil Station . From there, you go out of Exit 4 , which is connected to Lotte World.

1. Myeongdong to Lotte World

Take the Subway Line 4 from Myeongdong Station to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. From there, you change to Subway Line 2 and go to Jamsil Station. Then look for Exit 4 for direct access to Lotte World. The travel time is about 26 minutes and one-way trip costs 1,350 won.

2. Seoul Station to Lotte World

Board the Subway Line 4 from Seoul Station to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. Then you transfer to Subway Line 2 and head to Jamsil Station. From Jamsil Station Exit 4, you can directly access Lotte World. The journey takes around 31 minutes and costs 1,450 won.

3. Hongdae to Lotte World

Catch the Subway Line 2 from Hongik Univ. Station to Jamsil Station. And then, you head for the Exit 4 which is directly connected to the theme park. The one-way travel is about 38 minutes, and the fare is 1,450 won.

1. Reserve your tickets in advance

The smartest way to save money for your trip is to reserve the Lotte World tickets here beforehand.

Booking your tickets online instead of buying from the physical counter means you get to enjoy up to 35% discount !

2. Kick off your adventure in the morning

It’s highly suggested to visit the Lotte World in the morning so you have enough time to enjoy the rides.

Or you may spend the entire day here because the theme park is quite big . Hence, there are a lot of things to see and do.

3. Don’t forget to check the maintenance announcements

Another significant thing is to know that some rides in the theme park may close for maintenance .

Therefore, you should check Lotte World’s attractions closure date before going. This is so you can plan what to visit ahead of time.

4. Download the Lotte World app

Download the Lotte World app ( Android / iOS ) so you have an idea of the schedule of the performances on a specific day .

This is important so you won’t miss the shows and you can head to the area before it begins.

5. Schedule your visit during the weekdays

And for the last tip, visit the park on weekdays . Choosing to visit from Monday to Friday is the best option to avoid crowds .

Seoul Lotte World Guide — 13 Things You Need to Know Before Going

A comprehensive Lotte World guide on how to conquer this adventurous theme park —  both outdoors and indoors.

The last time I visited Seoul, I was 10 or 11. It was a family trip full of sightseeing, shopping, and eating KBBQ. Like all family trips, they were aite but tame (read: boring). No hikes, no camping, and no theme parks (my one true love!). It’s not easy being a “wild” child in a family that suffers from motion sickness.

Fast-forward a decade+ later, I visited Seoul again as an adult. Unlike the little kid I used to be, I was now armed with financial power and the independence to decide what I wanted to do. So, first thing on the agenda — go wild and scream my damn lungs out at Lotte World (롯데월드)!

Located within Seoul city, Lotte World is an incredibly popular theme park. Compared to South Korea’s largest theme park Everland , Lotte World has an outdoor and indoor park — basically, twice the fun. Each area is packed with a variety of thrilling rides and attractions, as well as entertaining goodies the whole family can enjoy. (Are you seeing this, mom?)

Pre-Trip Planning

1) peak periods to avoid.

Besides the usual weekends, Summer break (mid-Jul to mid-Aug), Chuseok , or Korean Thanksgiving Day should be avoided at all costs! The holiday falls typically sometime in September but check here to find out when the next Chuseok will be.

You’d also want to avoid Christmas and New Year period, which coincides with Winter vacation for schools. That said, if the dates are unavoidable, below are some ways you can beat the snaking queues.

2) Save up to 38% when you pre-book the tickets online

Tickets can be purchased at Lotte World entrances, but you’d get a better deal when you get them online. At the door, tickets go for ₩62,000 (~S$64). We got our tickets via Klook at ~S$40. Quick maths: We scored a lotte discount of ~38%!

To beat the crowds, you can also purchase Lotte World’s premium Magic Passes alongside your regular tickets. They work like express passes, allowing you to skip the queues and hop on rides almost instantly.

3) Download the Lotte World app

Before you reach Lotte World, download the Lotte World Adventure mobile app . It provides information such as park hours for the day, show timings, attraction wait times, as well as ride closures and maintenance.

After collecting your physical tickets, register them on the app by scanning the QR code. Doing so will grant three free Magic Passes for each ticket, which you can use to reserve rides. They work similarly to Disneyland’s Fast Passes, but more on this below !

4) Getting from Seoul to Lotte World

Lotte World is located in Jamsil, about an hour from the city centre, and is easily accessible by public transport. We recommend using a reloadable T-money card for the journey.

(1) By Subway/Metro (₩1,450, 45mins) : From Seoul Station, take Line 4 to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. Then, transfer to Line 2 bound for Sindang or Seongsu Station. Ride for 11 stops to Jamsil (Songpa-gu Office) Station.

At Jamsil Station, exit Gate 4 and follow the signs to Lotte World. If you’re coming from another station, refer to Google Maps or Naver Maps for directions.

(2) By Public Bus (₩1,400, 1hr): From Seoul Bus Station, take bus 402. Ride for 13 stops to Nonhyeon Station. Then, transfer to bus 360. Ride for 14 stops to Jamsil Lotte World Station.

To redeem your pre-booked tickets from Klook , head to Lotte World’s South Gate located outside the mall. Enter the Group Admission office on the left to show your vouchers. The staff will hand you your physical tickets, then it’s time to play!

Lotte World consists of an outdoor (“Magic Island”) and indoor area (“Adventure”). On Magic Island, you’ll find an iconic princess castle, as well as a majority of the theme park’s thrilling rides. This is probably where you’ll be screaming the most!

On the flipside, Lotte World Adventure is one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world, spanning four levels. Built under a beautiful glass dome, it’s more atmospheric and family-friendly than Magic Island. Most of Lotte World’s facilities and eateries are also located here.

5) Use Lotte World’s Magic Pass for Popular Rides

We mentioned earlier that Lotte World has two types of Magic Passes: Free and premium. We recommend getting premium passes if you’re short on time and want to jump on the ultra-popular rides. However, if you’re on a budget or just want to try your luck, stick with the free passes.

How to use free Magic Passes: (1) Via Lotte World App – Register your tickets on the app. – Under “Magicpass reservation”, pick your desired rides and timeslots.

The reservation system opens every 15 minutes. However, spots tend to get snapped up quickly. Some of the more popular rides may also close their reservation system by the afternoon. To counter this, arrive early in the morning to reserve your spots.

(2) Through Magic Pass kiosks – Head to the ticketing machines in front of rides, or around Lotte World, to scan your tickets. – You’ll receive a receipt with your ride time.

Compared to free passes, premium passes are stored inside your physical ticket. They can be used anytime throughout the day, except on some rides . Be careful not to lose them, as Lotte World will not replace lost tickets.

How to use premium Magic Passes: – Queue up in the Magic Pass lane of the ride. – Pass your ticket to the attending staff.

6) Must-Rides at Magic Island (Outdoor area)

One of Magic Island’s most sought-after rides is the Gyro Swing . The monstrous pendulum hurls riders back and forth while spinning 360° at the same time. If you ever want to feel weightless and dizzy — this is it!

Lotte World’s signature rollercoaster is the Atlantis . The ride starts slow, before launching you through twists, turns, and really close shaves with water (you can touch it too, if you dare). What won this coaster for me, though, are the two drops in the course that come when you least expect them!

Theme parks aren’t just a test of your body, but your mind too. Conquer your fear of heights on the Gyro Drop . The tower drop ride presents you with panoramic views of Magic Island before sending you on a free-fall at 100km/h for a few seconds. The fear-less ones can opt for a VR experience, where you’ll be dropped in a futuristic cityscape. Yikes .

Fun fact: Someone edited a video of the Gyro Drop and made it even more terrifying. Some netizens had mini-heart attacks watching it, but (un)fortunately, it’s fake.

7) Must-Rides at Lotte World Adventure (Indoor area)

Arr you ready for the ride of your life, matey? Modelled after a Spanish pirate ship, The Conquistador is a Viking ship ride that swings up to an impressive 75°, promising a riveting, gut-wrenching experience.

Like a hot air balloon, the Aeronauts Balloon Ride takes riders on a slow and scenic journey above the indoor theme park. One of the best times to ride this is in the evening when the park comes to life with lights and flashy parades.

A classic theme park ride, the Camelot Carousel is many visitors’ favourite at Lotte World. The family-friendly ride is equipped with 64 graceful white horses that revolve at a mellow pace. Even if you’re not interested in riding it, the carousel serves as a whimsical backdrop for your IG photos. 😍 (Hint-hint to all the couples out there!)

8) Recommended Route for Adrenaline-Junkies 

Daredevils, you’d want to prioritise these rides as they’re Lotte World’s wildest! But, have a backup plan in case some of them close due to maintenance or bad weather.

Route: Gyro Spin (Magic Island) > Atlantis > Gyro Drop > Gyro Spin > Bungee

9) Recommended Route for Families with Kids or Elderly Folk

This route features less-adventurous rides in Lotte World but is still enjoyable. Anyone who wants to take it easy can also hop on this route (you are on vacation after all). Lotte World even has a Korean folk museum and trick-eye museum on the third floor if you really want to take things slow!

Route: The Adventure of Sinbad (Adventure 1F) > Drunken Basket > Camelot Carousel > Aeronauts Balloon Ride (4F) > Pharaoh’s Fury

10) Attractions and Experiences that Aren’t Included in Your Ticket

Scattered around Lotte World are extra paid attractions such as VR experiences, haunted houses, carnival games, and mirror mazes. The entrance fees for most of these attractions cost ₩3,000 (~S$3.50) and above.

If you feel like getting active, head to the giant ice rink in the middle of Lotte World Adventure! The rink is technically a separate attraction from the theme park, hence you would end up leaving the premises. Show your Lotte World ticket to get a discount on ice skating, with varying prices on weekdays and weekends .

To re-enter Lotte World, you’ll need to show your ice rink tickets to the staff.

11) Catch Must-Watch Shows and Parades 

While at Lotte World, check the location and timings for live shows and performances via the app or printed programme lists. Do arrive early to secure the best seats, especially for seasonal shows. People start chope -ing their spots an hour before shows even begin!

For us, we caught Lotte World’s “Let’s Dream” Night Parade at 8PM. It was a spectacular light show, and all of Lotte World’s mascot characters were out in full swing dancing about and waving. If you’re lucky, you might even catch some indoor fireworks!

12) Grab some Food in Lotte World

Lotte World houses a wide variety of food , ranging from the quintessential Korean grub to Chinese, Japanese, and American cuisine. There are many familiar international brands such as KFC, Quinzos, Panda Express, and even Gongcha.

Price-wise, a meal inside the theme park costs similar to what’d you find in most restaurants outside (~₩10,000, ~S$11.60). However, if you’d like to save money, Lotte World allows you to bring your own food, which you can consume at the picnic lounge .

For light bites, snacks like waffles, churros, and ice cream (₩3,000 – ₩6,000) are available around the theme park.

13) Don’t Miss Seasonal Events at Lotte World

As an adrenaline junkie, I’m biased when I say the best time to visit Lotte World is during Halloween (usually Sep – mid-Nov)!

When we arrived in Oct, we found the whimsical Lotte World decked out in Halloween decor, ranging from cutesy (think of the children!) to deliciously gruesome. Special VR experiences, haunted houses, and performances are also rolled out to complement the spooky festivities.

I highly recommend catching the impressive Zombie Show on Magic Island after sundown. It’s short but intense — the zombie dancers were so dedicated to their roles, they even grabbed at the audience like real zombies (pre-Covid days of course)!

Christmas in Lotte World is also a huge, merry event that’s not to be missed. The theme park brings in carol bands, seasonal winter treats, and themed performances and parades that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a lovely winter wonderland.

FAQs about Lotte World

1) Everland or Lotte World?

Everland is mostly outdoors, while Lotte World has both an indoor and outdoor park. If the weather forecast doesn’t look good, you can still explore Lotte World Adventure for rides and shelter. Comparably, most of Everland’s attractions would be closed.

Distance-wise, Lotte World is closer to Seoul city than Everland. If you’re strapped for time, Lotte World would be a better choice, as it takes up to 2 hours to travel to Everland via public transport.

When it comes to ambience, Lotte World is more atmospheric with more child-friendly attractions in its indoor park. Everland has more heart-racing rides like the iconic T-express , as well as an integrated zoo, that’ll appeal to all ages. Where you go really depends on your itinerary and preferences, but both theme parks hold plenty of fun and surprises!

2) Is there a language barrier at Lotte World?

Unfortunately yes. Most of the shows, rides, and performances are only in Korean but are still entertaining nonetheless. Signs and maps are available in English, Chinese, and Japanese. The staff only know limited English, but that’s what Google Translate is for!

3) Where should I stay?

Lotte World is conveniently located an hour from the city centre, so there’s no need to stay onsite.

4) Are there lockers at Lotte World?

Yep! Lockers are located at all entrances of the park. They’re single-use, and cost between ₩1,000 – ₩2,000.

5) What else is there to do besides the theme park?

For some retail therapy, head to the huge Lotte Mall that’s connected to the theme park. There, you can also venture into Lotte World Aquarium which houses over 50,000 marine animals, including adorable belugas and penguins.

There’s also Lotte World Tower , the tallest skyscraper in South Korea. Visitors can head up to the observation deck on the 123rd floor and marvel at the views below.

How to Get Discounted Tickets for Lotte World 

Amidst the adrenaline-pumping rides and magical festivities, Lotte World feels like a Korean Disneyland. But just like Disneyland, Lotte World will hit you with exorbitant ticket prices: ₩62,000, or ~S$64 to be exact.

Rather than shell out that much money, pre-book your tickets from Klook . Tickets go for ~S$40, meaning you’d enjoy a discount of ~38%!

If you’re unsure of your Seoul itinerary, here’s the good news: Tickets are open-dated!

About the Observatory & View

The Seoul Sky Observatory is located at the top of the Lotte World Tower, the world's fifth tallest building standing 123 stories and 555 meters high. 2024 Lotte World Seoul Guide: Tickets, Attractions & Tips

Opened on 12 July 1989, Lotte World Seoul is one of the biggest and most popular theme parks in South Korea. On our Korea winter trip , we didn’t visit this famous Seoul attraction. But on our Korea spring trip , we made sure to add it to our itinerary.

Initially, we thought that Lotte World is just another family-friendly theme park. But we were surprised to see its own unique charm. In fact, we saw many haksaeng (students) donning cute Korean school uniforms and screaming their lungs out on the nerve-wracking rides. It’s a massive recreation complex   that’s even connected to a mall and the Lotte Hotel World .

Our good friend Kevin took us around Lotte World, and we could not thank him enough. In return, allow us to take you around this fun theme park so you know what to expect by the time you come here yourself.

From tickets to top attractions and rides, here’s everything you need to know about Lotte World in Seoul, South Korea.

Lotte World entrance fees

You have several options to buy your Lotte World tickets:

Option 1: Klook

Purchase the Lotte World Daily Pass from Klook for ₩37,800 (US$28.99 / ₱1,653) inclusive of admission to Lotte World and Folk Museum.

• You need to exchange the Klook e-Voucher for an actual ticket at Lotte World Wild Tour Gate (refer to map above).
• Children three and below are free to enter Lotte World.

Option 2: WAUG

WAUG is South Korea’s number one activity booking platform so you are assured that their offers are curated well, especially for tours and activities in Korea. WAUG’s Lotte World ticket starts from ₩38,900 (US$28.78 / ₱1,620), which already includes access to Lotte World and Folk Museum.

Option 3: Lotte World

You can also walk-in and buy your tickets on site. However, it may cost you more. For instance, an adult price for a day pass costs ₩62,000 (US$46.56 / ₱2,600). See full list of Lotte World ticket prices from their official website.

What’s included in the Lotte World ticket?

In general, a Lotte World day pass ticket is inclusive of the following:

• One-day admission to Lotte World:   Lotte World Adventure (indoor area) and Magic Island (outdoor area) as well as some selected rides
• Folk Museum ticket

What’s NOT included in the Lotte World ticket?

A Lotte World day pass ticket usually does not include the following premium attractions as you would have to buy separate admission tickets for each:

• Lotte World Indoor Ice Skating Rink
• Lotte World Magical Forest
• Mirror Maze

Game Factory

• Haunted House
• Terror Cemetery

Aside from the aforementioned attractions, guided tours, school uniform rentals as well as food and drinks are also not included in the Lotte World admission ticket.

Lotte World operating hours

Lotte World Seoul is open from Monday to Sunday, 10am to 9pm. However, the Lotte world opening hours could change depending on several factors like the weather condition and system inspections. Do check the updated Lotte World operating hours prior to your visit.

How to get there

Lotte World is located at 240 Olympic-ro Songpa-Gu in Seoul, South Korea.

To get to Lotte World, you may take the following public transport:

By train: Take Metro Line 2 and 8 to Jamsil Station, Exit 4.

By bus: There are several buses that take you to Lotte World. You can take the Green Bus, Express Bus, Blue Bus, or Airport Bus. Refer to this list of specific bus numbers .

Lotte World is composed of two main parts: Lotte World Adventure (indoor area) and Magic Island (outdoor area).

The entire theme park is so huge that you would probably have a hard time picking which attractions and rides to experience first. We’re recommending a few popular ones, but feel free to cherry-pick based on your interests.

Lotte World Adventure is the indoor part of Lotte World where you can find the ice skating rink, stage for performances, arcade games, indoor rides, and some dining options.

Here are some of the popular Lotte World Adventure rides and attractions:

Ice Skating Rink

Open all year round, the indoor ice skating rink was the first Lotte World attraction that caught our attention as it is located right at the center of Lotte World Adventure. While we didn’t end up ice skating ourselves, it’s truly a sight to behold and a good spot to take some IG-worthy snaps.

World Monorail

Hop on this adorable skytrain to explore the indoor part of Lotte World. It’ll surely give you a different perspective of Lotte World Adventure.

Balloon Ride

It’s as if you’re riding a hot air balloon up in the air! The balloon is actually attached to the ceiling and goes around the area slowly to give you a bird’s eye view of the indoor park.

The Conquistador

At first, it may not be intimidating to look at. But mind you, this Spanish pirate ship ride will leave you hanging on for dear life as it swings from one side to the other like a perennial pendulum.

French Revolution

It’s a different kind of roller coaster experience as you slither through different parts of Lotte World Adventure. Of course, the 360-degree rotation will make you scream your head off.

Splashing into the water on a log boat sounds a lot like fun! This exciting ride also takes you through a jungle-like environment from the Jurassic period.

Get your adrenaline pumping as you collide with fellow riders. Remember to keep your cool all the time.

Camelot Carousel

Take a break from the death-defying rides and get aboard the merry-go-round. Pick your white horse and live in your own magical world.

Unleash your competitive spirit by playing different arcade games, shooting guns, air hockey, claw machines, and more. Game on!

Magic Island

Magic Island is the outdoor part of Lotte World where you can find the Magic Castle, thrilling outdoor rides, and food stalls to buy some snacks and drinks.

Magic Castle

What’s a fantasy world without a castle? Strike a pose and keep a memory of this quintessential Lotte World structure.

This is the French Revolution and Flume Ride combo so you can just imagine the heart-stopping experience on this ride.

Bungee Drop

Picture yourself being dropped suddenly from a tall structure not once, but multiple times! Can you take the challenge?

If you think Bungee Drop is terrifying enough, wait until you ride the Gyro Drop. It’s a longer free-fall and it spins! This one’s truly not for the faint of heart.

It’s tagged as Asia’s first non-vibration anti-noise spin ride – whatever that means, it’ll literally make your world spin like hell.

How about a spin and swing combo? We don’t know about you, but just the thought of it makes us dizzy already.

It’s a rotating giant swing, but it’s not as extreme as the Gyro Swing.

The Comet Express

True to its name, it’s as though you are riding a comet in the dark outer space. And yes, it’s a roller coaster with seats that rotate 360 degrees.

This one’s for couples who want to cap off the day on a romantic moon-shaped boat.

These are just some of the many Lotte World attractions and rides that are in store for you. Feel free to experience the rest if your time permits. Do note that not all attractions are included in the day pass. Some attractions and rides have separate admission fees.

Friendly reminders

• Wear comfy clothes and shoes apt for the season.
• Although you can rent and wear a Korean school uniform , cosplaying that covers the face and is disturbing is not allowed.
• Pets are not allowed inside the park.
• Filming is not allowed for wedding and commercial purposes.
• You also cannot bring tripods and drones.
• Bringing of dangerous items or weapons is strictly prohibited.
• Lotte World is smoke-free but there are designated smoking areas.
• You can only eat your lunch box food at designated picnic areas.
• Familiarize yourself with the Lotte World rules and regulations before your visit.

Located in the heart of the city, Lotte World is the perfect spot for entertainment and sightseeing. It is a theme park filled with thrilling rides, an ice rink, different kinds of parades as well as a folk museum, a lake, and much more. About 6,000,000 visitors are welcomed every year, and about 10% of the visitors are foreigners. The structure inside makes use of the natural sunlight, and it is open for visitors all year round, regardless of the weather. Lotte World is divided into a ‘’Adventure’ theme once you are inside the building, and outside is a ‘Magic Island’ theme next to Seokchonhosu Lake. Lotte World Adventure has certain different countries with various kinds of facilities and souvenir shops. You can enjoy watching parades, numerous films, laser shows, and a variety of international cuisines even during the holidays. Magic Island is situated outdoors, where the dazzling Magic Castle is located as well as thrilling high-altitude rides that you can’t experience elsewhere. Be sure to also check out the peaceful walking trail around the lake. One of the major reasons tourists are attracted to Lotte World is the amusement rides. The Gyro Drop and Gyro Swing are the top pleasers– a steep drop with an altitude of 70 meters, or taste the thrilling sensation of being inside a tornado. On the other hand, The Folk Museum is the most popular museum for foreign tourists. Lotte Kopecky Uncorks Huge Sprint to Win Paris-Roubaix Femmes

Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) had been dreaming of winning Paris-Roubaix Femmes Avec Zwift since its first edition, and the world champion did it in sensational fashion Saturday.

Kopecky made a huge sprint from the middle of a six-rider group and denied Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) and Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM Firmenich-PostNL) to claim her first victory at “Hell of the North”.

Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike), Amber Kraak (FDJ Suez), and Ellen Van Dijk (Lidl-Trek) were all protagonists in a wild, tailwind-driven race, and finished fourth through sixth respectively.

Defending champion Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale) missed one of the day’s early splits and didn’t feature in the decisive moments of Saturday’s fourth edition of the race.

Victory in Roubaix is a blockbuster result for Kopecky, who hit a top-10 in both her past two starts in “Hell” but couldn’t capture her long-sought win.

It also salves the sting of her disappointment at Tour of Flanders least weekend, where she was left downcast with fifth.

“This was the goal of the season and to do it is really nice,” Kopecky said at the finish. “The team gave me so much confidence already this season but especially in the last week.

“My teammates tried to make me laugh the last two days as much as possible. I could really feel how much they believed in me being able to win this race.”

Clad all in white, the world champion delivered a champion’s performance of relentless attacking and ruthless sprinting.

The track and road sensation was boxed in around the back-straight of the final loop of the velodrome, but was able to navigate through the crowd with a massive acceleration that came around her rivals and grab the win by a length.

“It’s always nervous,” Kopecky said of the finale. “You are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, and you are never sure.

“One moment I thought, ‘now I am boxed in,’ but they had to start their sprint pretty early. I could keep sprinting,” she laughed.

The 28-year-old now counts victories at road worlds, De Ronde , Strade Bianche, and Paris-Roubaix on her glittering one-day palmarès .

Lidl-Trek will leave the Roubaix velodrome feeling stung.

The squad took two riders into the velodrome but was denied by Kopecky’s final kick.

“If they told me that I would be second at the start I wouldn’t believe it,” Balsamo said. “Being second in an important race like this is always a little bit disappointing, but it is 10 minutes after the finish and I am happy.

I think that I did a good sprint,” Balsamo said. “Then after such a hard race Lotte was just stronger. So it’s OK.”

SD Worx looking for redemption

All eyes were on the “super squads” Lidl-Trek and SD-Worx Protime to animate the race Saturday.

Lidl-Trek was without multi-discipline sensation Shirin van Anrooij and former Roubaix champions Elisa Longo Borghini and Lizzie Deignan, but still packed a lot of depth with Van Dijk, Balsamo, and Lucinda Brand.

SD Worx-Protime left Tour of Flanders disappointed and was without Demi Vollering for Saturday. Nonetheless, the peloton dominators still brought Kopecky and Lorena Wiebes for a heavy double-punch.

Vos didn’t have such a strong team but looked in some of the form of her life and packed a second-place finish on her Roubaix resume .

There was no Arenberg on the menu Saturday, but two five-star stips – the Mons-en-Pévèle and Carrefour de l’Arbre were both there.

Defending Jackson crashed twice in the space of a handful of kilometers in the first 50km of racing. She seemed unaffected and barreled back into the bunch, but missed the day’s main splits and couldn’t make an influence in her title defense.

The 17 sectors of cobblestones were loaded into the back-half of the race, with the opening Hornaing à Wandignies sector arriving at 83km to go.

While conditions Saturday were mild and clear, the pavé was scattered with dirty wet patches after a week of rain. Despite the unpredictable surface, crashes did not impact the front-half of the peloton.

Racing started relatively quietly and so the bunch hit the first sector together.

However, a raging tailwind and some super-motivated riders from DSM Firmenich-PostNL and Lidl-Trek strung the bunch over a kilometer in the space of the first two sectors.

Kopecky earns crown at ‘Queen of the Classics’

Kopecky was on a mission all day.

She put Roubaix at the center of her season as was pummeling on the front as soon as the cobbles started.

Unmissable in her all-white skinsuit, the world champ seemed at the center of all the action. She was forced to make an on-the-fly mechanical adjustment to her bars at 61km, and just 10km later helped create a super-dangerous split.

Kopecky, Vos, Georgi, and Christina Schweinberger (Fenix-Deceuninck) got away at 52km and looked like they had the power to go to the velodrome.

Classics super-squad Lidl-Trek missed the split and the team’s powerhouse TT ace Van Dijk did a huge pull to drag the race back together for the brutal Mons-en-Pévèle sector.

The peloton got smaller and smaller with each sector in a true race of attrition. There were only 25 riders left out front as the race tilted into its final hour.

Lidl-Trek and Fenix-Deceuninck both took three riders into the group, while FDJ-Suez packed into the attack with four.

Vos had two teammates with her and SD Worx was relatively short handed with only Kopecky and Wiebes out front.

Kopecky outkicks Lidl-Trek’s double threat

Van Dijk only returned from her maternity break at the start of March but was far from labored.

The Dutchwoman unleashed a series of attacks in the final 35km and was instrumental in helping pull back a solo attack by Jade Wiel (FDJ-Suez).

Kopecky made a huge drive on sector 5 – the Camphin-en-Pévèle – and only Vos and Balsamo could follow.

The trio bridged across to an earlier move by Amber Kraak and Van Dijk, and the five hit the brutal five-star Carrefour de L’Arbre at KM 15 together.

Balsamo was briefly dropped only to be saved by the charging chaser Georgi, who brought her and the Italian to the leaders to form the final group of six that roared toward Roubaix.

Around a dozen riders chased hard, 20 seconds back.

The six leaders began to play poker into the final 4km and it looked like the chase peloton could make the catch.

Van Dijk committed to Balsamo in the final few kilometers and did another huge pull on the front to keep the attack clear and lead the sextet onto the velodrome.

The big Dutchwoman led out the sprint and Balsamo and Vos hit the front first – but Kopecky’s huge finish won her the cobblestone trophy.

Paris-Roubaix 2024: Mathieu van der Poel retains classic cycling title in style

A blistering attack 60km from the finish saw Mathieu van der Poel make it back-to-back wins in the Paris-Roubaix men's road cycling classic.

The Dutch star, who last weekend claimed a third victory in the Tour of Flanders , surged clear of the lead group at the start of sector 13 -- the sectors count down from 29 to one - of the cobbles.

And the reigning road race world champion was able to avoid mechanical mishaps on the infamous terrain, coming home more exactly three minutes clear on Sunday (7 April 2024) in the hardest one-day race on the road cycling calendar.

Speaking after the race, van der Poel said of his break, "I just wanted to make the race hard from thereon because I know that’s my strength. I felt super good today. When I had the gap, I knew that it was a tailwind to the finish for the most part.

"You always know in Roubaix a puncture is never far away, but I had quite a gap and the car also behind me so I was confident. And I could really enjoy the moment more than I could last week. I was really at my limit last week but today I felt incredible and I could really enjoy the last part.”

He also gave thanks to his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates, including second-placed Jasper Philipsen , saying, “I’m super proud of the boys and very happy to finish it off."

The 29-year-old is the first man since Tom Boonen in 2009 to win back-to-back Paris-Roubaix races, with the Belgian going on to claim a record-equalling four victories.

Van der Poel also became the eighth man to win the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in the same year, a feat last achieved by Fabian Cancellara in 2013.

Fellow world champion Lotte Kopecky claimed the fourth edition of the women's 'Paris-Roubaix Femmes' race on Saturday.

Kopecky was in a group of six riders entering the the Roubaix Velodrome, and the Belgian outsprinted Elisa Balsamo to secure her first Paris-Roubaix triumph.

Van der Poel on top again despite course criticism

The build-up to the 119th edition of the 'Hell of the North' was dominated by concerns about crashes after a number of riders were injured in the Itzulia Basque Country race on Thursday.

Two-time reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard suffered multiple injuries including a collapsed lung and broken collarbone, while Jay Vine avoided requiring spinal surgery having slid off into a concrete ditch.

The Australian will spend up to six weeks wearing a neck brace and is doubtful for both the Tour de France and the Olympic Games Paris 2024 .

Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic also face time on the sidelines after being caught up in the mass collision.

A new sharp U-turn was introduced on the Paris-Roubaix course this week to slow riders down before the Arenberg Forest section, a measure van der Poel had questioned on social media with the words, "Is this a joke?"

The 55.7km of cobbles in the 259.7km test are notoriously hard on both body and bike, but the pre-Arenberg chicane was free of incident. And the riders had not even reached the cobbles when a pile-up forced Elia Viviani to abandon.

The early cobbled sectors and strong winds triggered big splits in the peloton before the halfway stage.

Just after the Arenberg Forest section, a group of three made the first serious break with Stefan Küng , Nils Politt and van der Poel's Alpecin teammate Gianni Vermeersch going clear.

Tom Pidcock was among those working hard at the front of the pack, and the trio was soon reeled in before van der Poel made his decisive attack.

Former world road race champion Mads Pedersen tried to close the gap, but the presence of Alpecin riders Vermeesch and Philipsen in the chase group made his task almost impossible as van der Poel extended his lead to two minutes with 35km remaining.

Vermeesh was then dropped from the chase group, and New Zealander Laurence Pithie lost his front wheel on a bend transitioning from tarmac to the cobbles while in second place.

Despite a mighty effort, Pithie was unable to close the gap leaving Philipsen, Pedersen, Küng and Politt to fight it out for the podium places.

Philipsen attacked with 10km to go with Küng unable to go with him, but could not shake off the others.

Pedersen led the three into the velodrome, Politt moved alongside, but Philipsen found a gap down the inside to make it an Alpecin one-two ahead of Petersen.

Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Deceuninck crossed the line unchallenged following a 59-kilometer attack the day after Lotte Kopecky of SD Worx-Protime won Paris-Roubaix Femmes from a six-up sprint.

This is the second time Van der Poel claims victory in the prestigious Roubaix Velodrome on a day filled with intense action and drama. Second place was Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was third.

This is the third Spring Classics race won by Alpecin-Deceuninck this season. It was the fastest-ever edition of Paris-Roubaix with Van der Poel averaging 47.85 kilometers per hour for 260 km—1 kilometer per hour faster than his previous record, which was set last year.

“It is hard to believe. The team was stronger than last year. I’m super proud of the boys and happy to finish it off,” said Van der Poel in the post-race interview.

When asked if his 59-kilometer attack was planned, he said. “No, not really. I wanted to make the race hard from there on because I knew that was my strength, and I felt super good today. I knew it was a tailwind to the finish line for the most part. I had a really good day.”

“I never could have dreamt of this as a child. I was super motivated for this year. I wanted to show the jersey in a nice way. It goes beyond expectations. I’m a bit loss for words,” the World Champion added.

Saturday’s Paris-Roubaix Femmes was an entirely different race from the 2023 edition, with a lead group featuring multiple World Champions and six racers who all could handily win a race like Paris-Roubaix. But it was reigning World Champion Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) who played the race flawlessly from the early moments, including an on-bike handlebar adjustment to a picture-perfect sprint finish. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) finished second, and Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL) third.

“This was the goal of the season,” said Kopecky in the post-race interview. “The confidence the team has given me the whole season, but especially this week—they made me laugh as much as possible, and they made me feel like I could win this race.”

“It’s always nervous. You are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, so you’re never sure. One moment, I thought, ‘Now I’m boxed in,’ and I had to start the sprint pretty early, but I could keep sprinting,” the Belgian added.

Kopecky is the first woman to win Paris-Roubaix Femmes in the World Champion colors.

How Paris-Roubaix unfolded

As the peloton rolled out from Compiègne, anticipation was heavy. Riders knew they would face a true test of grit and endurance across 29 punishing cobblestone sectors spanning nearly 260 kilometers. Among the favorites were Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), alongside stars like Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), and Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers).

Numerous attempts at breakaways were made throughout the early kilometers, but it wasn’t until Kasper Asgreen (Lidl-Trek) made his move that a serious threat to the peloton formed. Asgreen, along with a select group of ten riders, including Per Strand Hagenes (Visma-Lease a Bike), Marco Haller (Bora-hansgrohe), and Rasmus Tiller (Uno X-Mobility), managed to carve out a 1:30 gap, signaling the beginning of a strategic battle.

Behind them, the peloton, led by Alpecin-Deceuninck, remained vigilant, unwilling to let the breakaway gain too much ground as they entered the first cobblestone sector. The dynamic changed continuously as attacks and counterattacks peppered the race, with each rider jockeying for position on the unforgiving roads.

Van der Poel positioned himself strategically throughout the race. His Alpecin-Deceuninck team worked efficiently to control the pace and keep him in contention. Despite challenges like punctures and crashes that plagued some riders, Van der Poel remained focused on staying near the front of the race.

With still 150 kilometers left to go, just 60 riders were left on the front, six of them from Alpecin-Deceuninck. Crosswinds kicked in as the race entered its decisive phases, and Van der Poel led a chase group that gradually reeled in the leaders.

Ineos-Grenadiers rider disqualified

Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers) was disqualified from the race after taking an illegal tow from his team car following a puncture. Tarling was part of the select 30-rider front group, which formed after Alpecin-Deceuninck forced the pace for Van der Poel with 150km to go.

After an impressive performance from the young Brit at Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, his race ended early with 130km to go when he was officially disqualified by race commissaries and visibly disappointed.

60 kilometers to go

With 59 km to go, Van der Poel unleashed a savage attack on the Mons-en-Pévèle sector, leaving his rivals struggling to respond. Behind him, the chase group fractured, unable to match Van der Poel’s relentless pace. Riders like Pedersen and Pidcock fought bravely but couldn’t close the gap. Philipsen, meanwhile, was happy to sit in the group while his teammate Van der Poel stormed away from the group.

With his lead approaching almost a minute, Van der Poel’s victory seemed increasingly inevitable. As he navigated sector 10, his lead grew to over one minute and thirty seconds. His lead extended to 2 minutes and 46 seconds as he finished sector 9 unscathed. Despite attempts by the chase group to close the gap, Van der Poel’s lead remained substantial.

10 kilometers to go

With just 10 kilometers to go, Van der Poel’s lead continued at over 2 minutes. And despite the efforts of the chasers, including Pedersen, Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), and Politt, Philipsen maintained a strong position for the podium.

Van der Poel navigated Carrefour de l’Arbre with ease, extending his lead to 2 minutes and 46 seconds. However, a crash for Laurence Pithien (Groupama-FDJ) interrupts the chase behind them as he loses control on a corner.

Philipsen makes a decisive attack on sector 3, putting pressure on the chasers. Despite no attacks from the chase group, Pithie and Vermeersch struggle to bridge the gap, trailing by almost 30 seconds.

With a lead holding steady at about 2 minutes and 50 seconds, Van der Poel’s advantage was remarkable, reminiscent of his Tour of Flanders win. As the race entered the final kilometers, Van der Poel faced only two more sectors, both relatively tame.

As the tension mounted in the chase group behind, it was evident that only two podium spots remained, leaving one rider disappointed. Van der Poel smoothly navigated Sector 2, inching closer to a worry-free finish.

Van der Poel’s dominance continued as he began to relax and celebrate, even sharing a fist bump with his team car. Meanwhile, Küng fell further behind after being distanced by Philipsen’s earlier attack.

At the velodrome

Once at the Roubaix Velodrome, Van der Poel crossed the finish line with exactly a three-minute margin—the biggest the race has seen in 22 years. This is also his sixth monument victory, putting him inside the top sixteen riders to ever do so, joining the likes of Tom Boonen, Fabian Cancellara, and Johan Museeuw. Van der Poel is the first rider since Cancellara in 2013 to win both the Tour of Flanders and Roubaix in the same season.

Behind him, the group of three, consisting of Philipsen, Pedersen, and Politt, entered the velodrome for the sprint. Küng trailed seconds behind. Following the ring of the bell, Politt attacked first, but Philipsen came around the German for a 1-2 win, and Pedersen finished in third place.

For Jasper Philipsen, this is another great result in an exceptional spring. He’s now won Milano-Sanremo and Brugge-De Panne and made the podium at Paris-Roubaix.

One-hundred thirty-nine riders took to the start in Denain on a warm, almost sunny day—definitely not your usual cobbled classic weather! The crosswinds were brutal, though, and riders spread across the cobbles, buffeted by 18 mph wind gusts.

Early in the race, there were some minor crashes, including Coryn Labecki (EF Education–Cannondale) and last year’s winner Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale). Still, there were no major catastrophes, and all the riders made it back onto their bikes, though Jackson required a bike change and was forced to chase. Small breaks attempted to ride away early, but the peloton quickly swallowed them up.

At 15 kilometers, Victoire Joncheray of Komugi-Grand Est launched a solo attack, growing her gap to an impressive 1:50. She held her solo lead for over 20 kilometers before getting caught by the peloton as Jackson caught up from behind.

At kilometer 66, the first cobbled section of the race, from Hornaing to Wandignies. The peloton entered the 3.7km stretch of cobbles together, jockeying for position. SD Worx-Protime’s Lotte Kopecky—one of the top contenders for the win—controlled the pace at the front. Team dsm-firmenich also wanted to control the race, with Rachele Barbieri attacking at the front. Visma-Lease-a-Bike’s Marianne Vos also moved towards the front, using her cyclocross skills to fly over the cobbles.

Live coverage thankfully began with 80 kilometers of racing to go. As riders hit the road between the cobbled sectors, the peloton swarmed and bunched, jockeying for position. The pace seemed higher than you would typically see with 80 kilometers to go, with key riders clearly trying to stay close to the front after the early crashes in the day.

Strategic moves and on-the-fly adjustments

As they hit the fourth cobbled section, Kopecky attacked, spreading the peloton out across the cobbles, stringing out riders behind her. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) stayed close as Vos accelerated to jump from the peloton into the newly formed lead group. While no serious breakaway had formed once the riders hit the pavement again, the peloton had certainly broken up quite a bit, with a group of 15 in the front and a large chase group close behind.

Jackson attacked out of the front group, with Lidl-Trek’s Ellen Van Dijk covering the move instantly. In the short sector 14 (Beuvry-la-Forêt to Orchies), the chase group worked to make that connection to the lead group as Van Dijk took control of the front of the race. A drone shot showed riders stretched across the entirety of the sector. Kopecky had a bike issue at 61 kilometers to go, asking the team car for an Allen key as she impressively tightened her handlebars on the fly .

Kopecky quickly raced her way back up to the lead group, moving towards the front just as the lead group hit Sector 13, the 1.7-kilometer Orchies segment, lead by Visma Lease-a-Bike’s Sophie Von Berswordt. Following the sector, the pace settled at the front as the peloton came back together.

At 53 kilometers to go, Kopecky made another attack on the cobbles, this time joined by her teammate Lorena Wiebes, who almost instantly began to struggle with a bike issue, Vos, Christina Schweinberger, and Pfeiffer Georgi. As Wiebes struggled with her bike, Vos attacked, bringing the lead group of four to a gap of 10 seconds.

Behind them, several riders, including FDJ Suez’s Grace Brown and two Human Powered Health riders, struggled with flats on the tricky cobbled section. The attack was reabsorbed into the dwindling peloton, forming a lead group of about 25 riders. Riders, including Kopecky and Van Dijk, tested small attacks, but they were quickly contained by the strong riders in the lead group.

FDJ-Suez’s Jade Wiel attacked out of Sector 8, building a slight advantage as Tiffany Cromwell of Canyon SRAM led the chasers. Wiel’s advantage grew to 10 seconds before Kopecky moved to the front, with Vos tight on her wheel. Van Dijk counterattacked, but FDJ-Suez moved into the lead group to cover moves as their rider moved up the road. Wiel’s advantage grew to over 20 seconds as Kopecky made a stop at the team car to pick up extra bottles. Wiel’s lead continued to extend, hitting 30 seconds with just under 28 kilometers and a few sectors of gravel of racing left.

20 kilometers to go

At the front of the chase group, Vos and Kopecky looked around, and Van Dijk attacked the group, aiming to shut down Wiel’s attack. But the FDJ riders hopped on her wheel, dropping the efficacy of Van Dijk’s attack. Wiel’s advantage dropped to 10 seconds, but then began to grow again. But in sector 6—Bourghelles to Wannehain—Wiel’s was reabsorbed into the lead group as Visma Lease-a-Bike and Van Dijk brought her back with FDJ’s Amber Kraak close behind. Van Dijk and Kraak both dropped into the time trial position, creating yet another small gap off the front.

Kraak and Van Dijk quickly extended their small gap as FDJ continued to play defense in the front of the race. As the gap grew to 15 seconds, the Visma Lease-a-Bike and SD Worx riders seemed unbothered by the two-woman attack, though the peloton’s pace accelerated as they hit the cobbles yet again.

Kopecky moved to the front and attacked with Balsamo, Georgi, and Vos on her wheel. The gap to the leaders quickly came down as Georgi fell off the pace and dropped back. Thanks to Kopecky’s massive surge, the gap to the rest of the peloton stretched aggressively in mere moments. The trio closed on Kraak and Van Dijk, putting two Lidl-Trek riders in the lead group with 18 kilometers to go.

Van Dijk let into Carrefour de l’Arbre, and the group of five maintained a strong lead on the peloton as Georgi tried to claw her way back, only eight seconds behind. Balsamo started to separate slightly from the lead group, struggling to hold the pace. Georgi made contact with Balsamo, passing her in her quest to connect to the leaders.

At the front, the riders struggled to pull together, as Van Dijk didn’t want to pull since Balsamo and Georgi were coming close to bridging up to the group. Balsamo and Georgi closed the gap, and immediately, Van Dijk attacked, with Vos staying tight to her wheel. The group of six stayed together as they hit 10 kilometers of racing to go, 40 seconds ahead of the chasers.

With eight kilometers to go, the group’s advantage shrunk to 25 seconds as the riders at the front struggled to work together cohesively. As the gap dropped to 20 seconds to a chase group of 10, including Wiebes and Borghesi, Kraak worked at the front, seemingly trying to press their advantage as Kopecky calmly sat on her wheel.

At five kilometers, the gap was just under 20 seconds as Kraak attacked, then Van Dijk with Kopecky and Vos on her wheel, Georgi and Balsamo staying tight behind. Behind them, the group of chasers tried to bridge up, but couldn’t seem to make any headway. The lead group’s 20-second gap was still in place at 2.5 kilometers to go, as the six racers started to focus on being prepared for the finish sprint while maintaining their gap. Van Dijk took a pull on the front with Vos right on her wheel, and they hit the final small cobble sector.

The final sprint

The group of six—nearly all World Champions—hit the velodrome together, preparing for the final sprint.

The bell rang for one lap to go. Georgi was the first to go, followed by Vos, but it was Kopecky coming from the back and around the other riders to take her first-ever Paris-Roubaix Femmes win. “This was the goal of the season,” said Kopecky in the post-race interview. “It’s always nervous. You are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, so you’re never sure. One moment, I thought, ‘Now I’m boxed in,’ and I had to start the sprint pretty early, but I could keep sprinting”

Australian cycling star Jay Vine will not have to have surgery on the spine injuries he suffered when falling heavily in a horror crash at the Itzulia Basque Country race . 

His UAE Team Emirates medical director Adrian Rotunno reported on Saturday that last year's Tour Down Under winner would remain in hospital and would be in a neck brace for up to six weeks.

After suffering what the team described as "a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures" in Thursday's crash in northern Spain, there had been initial fears that the 28-year-old would need an operation.

"After examining MRI and final clinical assessment, thankfully no surgery will be necessary for Jay. The fractures are stable enough not to warrant surgical correction," Rotunno said in a team statement.

"Jay will remain in hospital over the following days to allow for ongoing observations and further recovery. He will be in a neck brace for up to six weeks but will be able to start with general body rehab from next week."

Vine looked to have come off worst of the dozen who fell in the mass crash that caused serious injuries to other luminaries, including double Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard and double world champion Remco Evenepoel.

After the Canberra rider had slid at high speed on a descent into a concrete ditch at the side of a road, he lay motionless while being treated and TV pictures left his wife Bre, a former cyclist herself, fearing the worst .

But she said Vine was a fighter who would bounce back from a setback that may have completely scuppered his Olympic hopes for 2024.

The accident left few with any appetite for the rest of the week-long race, but the show had to go on, with Spain's Juan Ayuso taking overall victory on Saturday's sixth and final stage around Eibar.

Ayuso, the rising star of Spanish cycling, started the stage just four seconds behind overnight leader Mattias Skjelmose, but ended up winning by 42 seconds over stage winner Carlos Rodríguez.

Denmark's Skjelmose completed the podium.

The leading Australian was 2022 Giro d'Italia winner Jai Hindley, who finished 12th, 3 minutes and 19 seconds adrift of Ayuso.

In the day's other big race, the Paris-Roubaix Femmes Hell of the North over the cobbles was won by women's world champion Lotte Kopecky, who prevailed in a sprint in the famed Roubaix velodrome from five rivals.

Women's Paris-Roubaix: Lotte Kopecky wins as GB's Pfeiffer Georgi finishes third

World champion Lotte Kopecky won her first women's Paris-Roubaix as Great Britain's Pfeiffer Georgi claimed a podium place in a sprint finish.

Georgi, 23, led out a six-strong group in the Roubaix Velodrome before being overtaken in the finishing straight.

Italy 's Elisa Balsamo was second but Georgi just edged out the Netherlands ' three-time world champion Marianne Vos on the line to finish third.

Britain's Tom Pidcock is a late entry into the men's race on Sunday.

"This was the goal of the season," said SD Worx-Protime rider Kopecky, 28, who was fifth in the Tour of Flanders last Sunday and won Strade Bianche in March.

The race, which featureed almost 30km of cobbles, was decided by a breakaway group of six riders that came together with just under 12km of the 148.5km route remaining.

They stayed together going into the velodrome before reigning British champion Georgi hit the front.

"It was so hard and so close on the line, my legs completely clamped up, I just wanted it so bad," said DSM-Firmenich's Georgi, who believed she had finished fourth before the final results were revealed on the stadium screen.

"I can't believe it. This is a dream race. I know it is not the win but it means a lot. Some of these girls were my heroes growing up so to stand on the podium with them is pretty crazy for me," she added.

Fellow Briton Zoe Backstedt, 19, who rides for Canyon/Sram Racing, finished 28 seconds back in the second group in 16th place.

Pidcock enters men's Paris-Roubaix

The Netherlands' Tour of Flanders winner Mathieu van der Poel is favourite to win the men's race as he attempts to complete the classic cobble double.

The world champion will be joined on the start list by Pidcock, 24, who is a late entry after injuring his hip in a fall earlier this week.

The Ineos Grenadiers rider went down during a practice time trial before the Itzulia Basque Country and was forced to withdraw from the stage race .

Pidcock, who has won both the junior and under-23 versions, reported no lasting problems and will now make his debut in the monument - one of the five major one-day races.

Meanwhile, Spain 's UAE Emirates rider Juan Ayuso, 21, won the overall classification in the Itzulia Basque Country after finishing second in a gruelling sixth and final stage behind compatriot Carlos Rodriguez, who was second overall.

The race was marred by a serious crash on stage four that led to the withdrawals of reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard, fellow Grand Tour winner Remco Evenepoel and race leader Primoz Roglic.

Vingegaard, 27, suffered a collapsed lung and broke his collarbone and several ribs.

The world champion Lotte Kopecky delivered a devastating final sprint to claim the Paris-Roubaix Femmes title in a thrilling finish.

Belgium’s Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) was in a lead group of six when the 148.5km race arrived at the famous Roubaix velodrome and had enough in the tank to outpace her rivals. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) finished second while Britain’s Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) pipped Marianne Vos (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) to third place.

Vos made the first move on the velodrome lap and led into the final straight, but Balsamo went past her before Kopecky timed her victory surge around the outside to perfection.

“This was the goal of the season, to also do it is really nice. The team gave me so much confidence the whole season already, but especially the last week,” said Kopecky, who was the most dominant rider on the cobbles during the 148.5km race. “It’s always nervous, you are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, so you’re never sure.”

Balsamo was pleasantly surprised with being the runner-up, admitting afterwards: “If you had told me at the start I would finish second, I wouldn’t have believed it, so I’m extremely happy, but when you’re runner up in such a race, you can’t help to feel some disappointment … Now I need to believe in myself because I didn’t think I could do well here. I’ll try again in the coming years!”

The men’s race takes place on Sunday when Mathieu van der Poel will be aiming to retain his title and make it a golden double after winning last week’s Tour of Flanders.
