American Triangle – 5 Days

The first 3 days were unreservedly very good. The two tour guides were very sympathetic and approachable. The last two days suffered greatly from the fact that there was no German-speaking tour guide. The tour guide just did his job. In addition, we liked the small group at the beginning much better than the large group (about 50 pers.) of the last two days. The visit to the Amish people can be omitted. Has no experience value. The driver of the last two days was "better" than the first driver. Calm and level-headed. To feel good.

Iconic Cities & Natural Marvels: 21-Day USA Group Tour from East to West Coast Tour

Iconic Cities & Natural Marvels: 21-Day USA Group Tour from East to West Coast

From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

Arguably, the world's greatest city - new york city

Enjoy four unforgettable days exploring arguably the world’s premier city. An epicentre for the arts and America’s dining, theatre and shopping capital – New York City wears many crowns. Suppose you still have the energy after your flight and you arrive early enough. In that case, we recommend you start your adventure with an open-top bus tour of the city. This will help you familiarise yourself with the Big Apple’s layout and tick off many of its famous sights. Your Road Trip Pack will be full of recommendations of where to eat and what to see and do during your stay.

New York, NY

Manhattan, New York to The Hamptons, USA. City Skyline

New York City offers so much to see and do

Explore Midtown Manhattan today, highlights include shopping on 5th Avenue, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, Times Square, Broadway and the Rockefeller Centre – just make sure you leave time to visit either the Top of The Rock or The Empire State Building as the sunsets, to witness the city’s lights come alive across the Big Apple.

Manhattan, New York, USA

discover downtown on your third day in new york

A third day to explore New York, go downtown to the business district or the uber-cool neighbourhoods like Greenwich or Soho. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty can be visited by catching a boat from Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan. The Financial District is also located downtown and is anchored by Wall St, home to the New York Stock Exchange, and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, New York City, USA

a fourth and final day to enjoy New York City

Manhattan’s Central Park offers a break from the stresses of city life, watch joggers and dog walkers stretch their legs amongst more than 800 acres of well-maintained lawns, boating ponds and even a castle and a zoo. While in uptown Manhattan, you can visit the world-renowned Natural History Museum on the Upper West Side, or if art is more your thing, head to the Upper East Side’s Met and Guggenheim Museums.

Central Park, NYC. New York to LA

collect your car and drive south to Philadelphia

Start your road trip by heading south to the “Birthplace of America”, Philadelphia. Known as Philly to locals, you’ll have two nights to get familiar with the capital of Pennsylvania. In the evening, you may want to take a riverside stroll and head to Race Street Pier for an incredible sunset and nighttime view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia - Independence Hall, East Coast America

a second day to enjoy Philadelphia's highlights

Any visit to Philadelphia will only be complete by consuming an authentic and delicious ‘Philly Cheese Steak’ sandwich. You can enjoy these guilty pleasures in the foodie heaven that is Reading Market and at establishments all over the city. To burn off those calories, recreate the famous scene from the film ‘Rocky’ by climbing the 72 steps outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art (pictured).

Philadelphia, USA - Museum Of Art, East Coast America

cruise south from philadelphia to washington, dc

Your detailed Road Trip Pack will be the perfect companion to explore Washington, DC and all the other destinations along this route. You may want to begin by taking a self-guided tour of some of Washington’s iconic buildings. The White House, Capitol Hill and the Lincoln Memorial are just some of the key buildings that can be visited. Arlington lies across the Potomac River, a must-see for history and military enthusiasts.

Washington, DC

Capitol Building, Washington DC, USA

a full day to discover more of washington's attractions

You may want to dip into some of the famous Smithsonian Museums today, and there are many to choose from. The most notable, the Air & Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History, are on the National Mall, in the city’s heart. Best of all, they’re free to visit. Our favourite is the Newseum, which has impressive artefacts chronicling how ‘news’ has changed over the last 100 years.

Cherry Blossoms. Washington Monument in Washington DC, USA

Leave washington, dc for shenandoah national park

Front Royal marks the start of the legendary Skyline Drive, which cuts through the heart of Shenandoah National Park. Stunning surroundings, abundant wildlife and a 35 mph speed limit mean you’ll easily spend the day meandering this 105-mile leg of your journey. Why not pull into one of the scenic lay-bys and stretch your legs on one of the many trails.

Shenandoah NP

The superb blue ridge parkway awaits...

The best way to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains area is to drive Skyline Drive through the middle of Shenandoah National Park and then the famous Blue Ridge Parkway down to Great Smoky Mountain National Park. These are two of America’s truly great roads, making the most of the stunning mountain views with the famous blue haze.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains, USA

another day enjoying the blue ridge parkway

The world-famous Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail roll across this picturesque mountain region. As you cruise south, you’ll witness outstanding scenery around every corner. Old-time mountain music can be heard regularly, and wineries and craft breweries offer tastings in small towns and on mountain slopes.

Balloon over the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains USA

Final stop on the blue ridge parkway... asheville, nc

Our route will continue south along the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville, North Carolina. Some of today’s drive’s primary points of interest will include Lynn Cove, Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls. Asheville has numerous farmers’ markets to try, and the restaurant scene takes advantage of the seasonal produce sold there. Take advantage of the microbreweries too!

Asheville, NC

Lynn Cove, Blue Ridge Parkway, USA

Asheville to Great Smoky Mountains National Park

You’ll complete the Blue Ridge Parkway on your way to Great Smoky Mountains National Park today, where you’ll find ridge upon ridge of forest, which straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Great Smoky Mountains is America’s most visited National Park, so a second day to scour its gorgeous landscape for wildlife is essential. Look out for furry residents roaming the region; these include black bears, bobcats, racoons and elk. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a fantastic place to visit at any time of year; however, during autumn, the trees put on a dazzling show of colour for hikers and road-trippers to enjoy.

Tonight, you’ll stay in the heart of this incredible National Park, close to the canyon’s rim. Our Road Trip Experts will help you decide whether the North or South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best overnight stop for your party.

The Grand Canyon to bryce canyon national park

Drive west to Bryce Canyon National Park, famous for its unique geology consisting of horseshoe-shaped amphitheatres carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the colourful limestone rock into bizarre shapes, including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called “hoodoos”.

bryce canyon national park to zion national park

Zion National Park is stunningly beautiful. Emerald-coloured pools, lush green trees, and rust-red canyon walls are all on show in this picturesque valley. This combination of colours is a visual delight, and the Park’s trails offer the chance to explore nature at its best. The brave and athletic among you may wish to tackle the epic Angel’s Landing trail, culminating at a lofty perch boasting magnificent 360-degree views over the valley below. Alternatively, walk the famous ‘Narrows’, often knee-deep in water. Tonight, enjoy a meal at Zion Lodge or in the neighbouring town of Springdale, which has plenty of local restaurants.

It's time to head to Vegas baby!

Today, you’ll leave the National Parks of Utah and Arizona and head to the bright lights of Las Vegas. However, your detailed Road Trip Pack will advise you to take in one last area of outstanding beauty en route. Valley of Fire State Park offers a super scenic loop drive off the I-15 interstate, so if you can cope with yet more beautiful landscapes, then this is well worth the detour on your way to Las Vegas. Try to arrive in Vegas after the sun has set, and the lights of the world-famous Strip are turned on. This will be a break-taking moment after the numerous dark-sky places you’ve visited over the last few days.

Las Vegas, NV

wake up in the splendid luxury of las vegas

It’s glitzy, tacky and wrong on so many levels… but we love it! Firstly, it’s unique, and secondly, it’s indulgence at its very finest. First-class hotels, classy restaurants and show-stopping entertainment are all located in the middle of a desert landscape, miles from anywhere. Oh, and if you like to gamble, then Las Vegas is the place to be. If your head hurts from the night before, relax by one of the giant pools that adorn every hotel. If not, then walk the legendary Strip, book tickets to one of the world-class shows or shop till you drop – the choice is yours. As for food, we recommend visiting one of the mega buffets available. Just make sure you are hungry when you visit.

leave las vegas for death valley national park

Death Valley has an extreme climate and geology. The roads here are superb, dipping and leaning around curves before straightening out as you fall to 85m below sea level in the salt flats of Badwater. You’ll finish your drive on the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada. It’s one of the longer driving days but carries with it three awesome experiences.

Monterey was once California’s capital of the whaling and sardine industry; however, today, it’s best known for the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium that presides on Cannery Row. Want to experience Monterey Bay first-hand? Then take a whale watching trip during your stay. In the early evening, cruise along the famous “17-Mile Drive” to pretty Carmel-by-the-Sea. Carmel offers two world-class beaches backed by a gorgeous small town with beautiful homes, quality restaurants and quaint streets.

Big Sur is arguably the best driving experience in all of America. Cruise down the curvy roads, stopping at State Parks and vista points as you go. One optional stop is Hearst Castle, which perches on “The Enchanted Hill” and overlooks the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Next up is Santa Barbara, which was built in a charming Mediterranean style, thus making it one of the Central Coast’s very best highlights. If this drive is too long for your taste, then we’ll be happy to add an extra stop to cut this drive in half.

spend the day enjoying hollywood's attractions

Tinseltown is synonymous with glitz and glamour, and although many of the studios have now moved on to other parts of the city, it’s still fun to visit the home of the Oscars and walk Hollywood Boulevard looking for the handprints of your favourite movie stars. The Griffith Observatory is just a short drive northeast of here, perched high on a hill overlooking the city. The landmark is well worth a visit and offers excellent views of the legendary Hollywood sign.

Beverly Hills offers the chance to see movie star homes on palm tree-lined streets and Rodeo Drive, where you can shop with the rich and famous. Washington DC Tours From NYC Reviews

1. washington dc day trip from new york city.

  • Duration:  11 to 13 hours
  • Departure:  330 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036
  • Departure Time: 6:30 AM
  • Includes:  Professional tour guide, transport by 15-passenger van or full-sized bus, free wi-fi on bus

There’s a common misconception that in order to see the US, you need to spend a lot of money. With tours like this first one, however, you’d be surprised at the kind of experience you get for the price.

The Washington DC Day Trip from New York City  is an incredible opportunity to see the country’s capital and learn about its history in just half a day!

Starting by you meeting your guide at the Port Authority terminal building at 6:30 am, there’s no time to waste! Depending on the size of your group, you’ll either take a smaller van or a full-size bus!

Both come with free wifi on board, so you don’t have to worry about every losing signal or not staying up on emails while you’re cruising along.

I thought the journey there was actually quite entertaining in itself, as you get to watch the beautiful landscapes from Delaware, NJ, and Maryland as the guide tells entertaining stories!

Expand To See More See Less

Once you get to DC, you’ll make a visit first to the most well-known cemetery in the US: Arlington. Nearly 400,000 men and women were laid to rest here, and you’ll also get to see the Kennedy family gravesite, too.

After this, you’ll tour over to see the imposing Capitol, Senate, and White House which was built between 1792 and 1800 with a necessary reconstruction in 1812 due to the British army’s invasion.

After, continue on to the Smithsonian, along with an array of important memorials for learning about and taking photos.

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. 2-day washington dc, philadelphia and amish country tour from new york.

  • Duration:  2 days
  • Departure Time:  6:30 AM
  • Includes:  Pro tour guide, breakfast, transport by air-conditioned bus, sightseeing in Philly and DC, 1-night hotel accommodation, continental breakfast, authentic Amish buggy ride, wi-fi on bus

Our next tour is simply one of the most comprehensive educational and cultural experiences one could possibly have in this area of the US. Covering 3 very diverse destinations in a couple of days, you’re going to learn and see more than you thought possible!

Needless to say, the 2-Day Washington DC, Philadephia and Amish Country Tour from New York  is really something special.

Kick things off at 6:30 am, meeting your guide at a convenient location where you’ll hop on your air-conditioned bus. Philly is super close to NYC, so it’s really not much of a journey to your first destinations.

Upon arrival, you’ll first head to the Liberty Bell Center, where you’ll get to see and learn about the famous Liberty Bell, see Constitution Square, and Congress Hall. You’ll get to see the Rocky Statue and steps, the financial district, as well as the incredible local architecture in historic Philadelphia.

Then, you’re going to get quite a cultural switch here by heading on over to Amish farm country, where you’ll take a fun ride on an authentic Amish buggy! Learn about how this community lives without electricity, running water, phone services, appliances, and other modern technology.

For me, this was actually the coolest part – a lot of assumptions are made about the Amish but to see and learn in person was really eye-opening.

After getting some rest (and breakfast!) at the Wyndham Garden in DC, you’ll start the day off bright and early with a visit to important monuments such as the Jefferson Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and more.

Next, make your way to the National Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History before checking out Capitol Hill and the White House. With fully-guided tours throughout, you’ll pack your brain full of fun facts and anecdotes at each site!

3. Washington DC Day Tour from New York City

  • Duration:  14 hours
  • Departure:  1651 Broadway, New York, NY 10019
  • Includes:  Professional guide, fully-guided tour, transport via Mercedes Sprinter or coach bus, free wi-fi on vehicle, all taxes and fees

Visiting Washington DC should be on anyone’s bucket list, no matter where they’re from or what they’re interested in. Steeped in a rich history (to say the least!), you can imagine the architecture, galleries, museums, and memorials you’ll get the chance to see.

With the Washington DC Day Tour from New York City , it’s all possible on a convenient day-long expedition! Your professional tour will also start out early in the morning to make the most of the day. Hop on your air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinter or coach, which both have plenty of spacious seating and wi-fi so you’re never out of contact.

Passing through the states of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, there’s no lack of pretty scenery as you journey on. As you enjoy the landscapes, listen to your guide tell you all kinds of interesting stories about the area and Washington DC.

Once you get to DC, you and your group will start off at Arlington National Cemetery where you’ll visit a whole lot of historical graves, including the Kennedy family gravesite.

Renowned for its impressive monuments and memorials, you’ll also visit the iconic Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, WWII Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, among many others.

You’ll learn about the significant historical events and individuals around them, and why they made such an impact to the United States and our way of ilfe.

As the seat of the US government, Washington DC offers many opportunities to see where these political processes actually take place. On this particular tour, you will not enter the White House and Capitol, but you’ll get the chance to see outside.

There’s no way we can leave out the National Mall with its stunning reflecting pool, followed by a trip to the beautiful Union Station with its stunning vaulted main hall ceilings, marble columns, and intricate details.

4.  Washington DC and Monuments Day Tour from New York

  • Departure: 790 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019
  • Departure Time: 5:50 AM
  • Includes:  Professional guide, air-conditioned vehicle

I think a lot of us imagine Washington DC basically just as the seat of the US government, filled with memorials and museums rather than a city where plenty of civilians live.

I really enjoyed this tour as it not only showed us the “touristy” side of things, but also took us through the vibrant neighborhoods with their unique character and charm.

The  Washington DC and Monuments Day Tour from New York  is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in DC’s interesting atmosphere while learning about the history behind it.

This tour starts off a bit earlier than most, but for me, that was perfectly fine as the air-conditioned coach was so smooth and comfortable that it lulled me to sleep. Once we arrived in DC I was energized and ready to take on this new adventure!

After driving for a few hours, you’ll finally arrive in DC for the first stop of the day: Arlington National Cemetery.

Once at Arlington, you’ll learn how it’s the final resting place for hundreds of thousands of veterans who fought in American conflicts starting from the Revolutionary War.

If you or someone close to you is a Marine, you’ll definitely find the Marine Corps War Memorial dating back to 1775 very interesting. The Memorial Park ties in perfectly, featuring monuments from various wars, as well as President Lincoln, and the famous Obelisk.

There’s no way you can visit DC without stopping by to see the US Capitol and a somber stroll through National Mall: America’s most visited national park. When at the Capitol, you’ll learn all about its very colorful history and have some time to take photos in front.

When in the National Mall, you’ll browse through various museums and galleries on a guided tour followed by almost 2 hours of free time for lunch and exploring.

5. 4-day Niagara Falls, Washington DC, and Philadelphia Tour from New York

  • Duration:  4 days
  • Includes:  Pro tour guide, transport by van or full-sized bus, 3 nights hotel accommodation with tax and continental breakfast, wi-fi on bus

If you’re looking for the ultimate experience in hitting all those “bucket list” places in the region, we sure have you covered with this next tour.

It’s perfect if you have a few days and want to see some of the coolest locations outside of NYC! The 4-Day Niagara Falls, Washington DC, and Philadelphia Tour from New York  allows you to see 4 of the most popular (and varied!) destinations in the easiest way possible.

Start by meeting your guide and the rest of your group at 6:30 am right in front of the Port Authority Bus Terminal Building and hop aboard your van! If you have quite a few people in your party, you may end up taking a full-sized bus but both are very comfortable.

Head north first, where you’ll get to behold the beautiful Delaware Water Gap and even take some time to stroll through Watkins Glen Canyon. Upon arrival to Niagara Falls, you’ll get a full tour of Niagara, including the American Falls, Goat Island, and Luna Island.

At night, you can choose to either cross the border into Canada or stay on the American side for some free time.

Then, get some rest at the Microtel by Wyndham Niagara Falls or the Quality Inn Lockport. In the morning, you’ll make your way back down south, stopping at the Crossings Premium Outlets for some shopping.

After resting in New Jersey for the night, you’ll head to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell Center, Rocky Statue, historic Philly, and more. Enjoy an authentic Amish buggy ride and learn how this interesting community lives without modern technology.

In the late afternoon, you’ll head over to Washington DC where you’ll take a guided tour through all sorts of memorials, museums, and more.

The Trump GOP’s inverted perception of crime in America

tour america da new york

During a visit to a small convenience store in Upper Manhattan on Tuesday, Donald Trump distilled his party’s approach to crime — and, really, everything else.

Trump had come directly from the courthouse where, for the second day in a row, he observed as prospective jurors were questioned for the trial in which he stands accused of falsifying business records, part of an effort before the 2016 election to hide an alleged sexual encounter with an adult-film actress. The stop at the bodega was meant to draw a contrast between how Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg handled a killing that occurred at the store in 2022 — charges were eventually dropped against a clerk who argued he was acting in self-defense — and Trump’s situation.

Sign up for the How to Read This Chart newsletter

“Everything is screwed up in New York, and the whole world is watching,” Trump insisted while speaking to reporters. In his case, he added, “there’s no crime. You know where the crime is? In the bodegas, where they come and rob them every week.” As is his recent habit , he included a separate excoriation of recently arrived immigrants, who, he insisted, were taking all the jobs and who were “prisoners and people from mental institutions, largely.”

Viewed through a sympathetic lens, you see what Trump is arguing: They’re coming after me when there’s real crime out there? Step back one degree from that sympathetic view, though, and you come to a more useful position: Rather than being assessed on a sliding scale, crimes should generally be subject to accountability.

For years, Trump has offered his base a bifurcated view of law enforcement. Local police are lionized, both as a statement of allegiance and as the thin blue line keeping America safe from salivating hordes of leftist rioters, urban criminals and immigrant savages. Federal law enforcement, though, is suspect and corrupt, a position intertwined with long-standing investigations into Trump at the federal level. With his indictments at the local level in Georgia and Manhattan, Trump simply tied the local district attorneys back to his federal political opponents. (“By the way, this trial that I have now?” he said at the bodega. “That’s a Biden trial.”)

At the moment, though, this divergent view of crime — Trump and his allies are innocent political targets while liberal prosecutors let other criminals slide — is more distant from reality than usual.

Crime, by most available metrics, is down in recent years. That includes homicides, which, as the Wall Street Journal reported this week, have dropped sharply in several cities. In New York City, violent crime is down 3 percent year-to-date. Grand larceny is similarly down 3 percent, though the number of robberies is up 4 percent.

But it is an election year, so, as was the case in 2020 and 2022 , warnings from Trump and his allies about criminal activity are omnipresent and breathless.

“The next six months is going to be intense,” Kari Lake, a Republican candidate for Senate in Arizona, said at a rally over the weekend, as the New York Times reported . She told listeners to get ready: “We are going to put on the armor of God. And maybe strap on a Glock on the side of us just in case.”

The New York Post — a perpetual engine of fearmongering about crime — reported that “Californians are buying up guns after Border Patrol starts dumping thousands of migrants on streets.” In March, there were about 131,000 background checks conducted in California, a process that generally precedes a gun sale. Last March there were 128,000; the March before that, 129,000. In March 2021, there were 144,000.

None of this is to say violent crimes don’t occur; they do. It is, instead, to point out that heightened rhetoric about the dangers of crime doesn’t comport with the reality of trends in crime data.

This rhetoric sits alongside a willingness to give Trump and his allies a pass. Polling from the Associated Press, conducted by NORC this month, shows that only a small fraction of Republicans think Trump did anything illegal concerning the four indictments he faces. Only 6 percent of Republicans think he did anything illegal in the New York case.

This idea that Trump is being unfairly targeted for scrutiny and sanction — an idea Trump has relentlessly promoted for obvious reasons — extends to his allies. On Tuesday night, Newsmax host Greg Kelly (son of the former commissioner of the New York Police Department) encouraged viewers to write to former Trump adviser Peter Navarro, imprisoned in Florida.

Let’s all WRITE Peter Navarro.  He’s in JAIL and that’s a TOTAL CRIME.  Send him a note!  (Message: We Care!) PS: No contraband. pic.twitter.com/QSPjxcAAXK — Greg Kelly (@gregkellyusa) April 17, 2024

“He’s in JAIL and that’s a TOTAL CRIME,” Kelly wrote on social media on Wednesday morning. The reality is that Navarro ignored a congressional subpoena and was found guilty of contempt of Congress.

But Navarro was just stonewalling the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 , 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, hardly something a Trump supporter is going to be overly worried about. Likewise the actions of Trump: Oh, he tried to block Joe Biden’s presidency? Why not focus on the real criminals?

It's all about how the criminal actions are perceived. Trump keeping classified documents gets a shrug, but the specter of tattooed immigrants lying in wait in the dingy streets of New York is indelible. That the former happened and the latter is wildly overheated is neither here nor there. They are the bad guys, not us. They deserve to be cracked down on, to be constrained or punished. Not us. They are the ones we should be worried about.

In Kari Lake’s world, you’re advised to walk down the street armed and with your head on a swivel before you arrive at the courthouse to support Donald Trump during his criminal trial.

‘Civil War’ Review: We Have Met the Enemy and It Is Us. Again.

In Alex Garland’s tough new movie, a group of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst, as a photographer, travels a United States at war with itself.

‘Civil War’ | Anatomy of a Scene

The writer and director alex garland narrates a sequence from his film..

“My name is Alex Garland and I’m the writer director of ‘Civil War’. So this particular clip is roughly around the halfway point of the movie and it’s these four journalists and they’re trying to get, in a very circuitous route, from New York to DC, and encountering various obstacles on the way. And this is one of those obstacles. What they find themselves stuck in is a battle between two snipers. And they are close to one of the snipers and the other sniper is somewhere unseen, but presumably in a large house that sits over a field and a hill. It’s a surrealist exchange and it’s surrounded by some very surrealist imagery, which is they’re, in broad daylight in broad sunshine, there’s no indication that we’re anywhere near winter in the filming. In fact, you can kind of tell it’s summer. But they’re surrounded by Christmas decorations. And in some ways, the Christmas decorations speak of a country, which is in disrepair, however silly it sounds. If you haven’t put away your Christmas decorations, clearly something isn’t going right.” “What’s going on?” “Someone in that house, they’re stuck. We’re stuck.” “And there’s a bit of imagery. It felt like it hit the right note. But the interesting thing about that imagery was that it was not production designed. We didn’t create it. We actually literally found it. We were driving along and we saw all of these Christmas decorations, basically exactly as they are in the film. They were about 100 yards away, just piled up by the side of the road. And it turned out, it was a guy who’d put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival, and he’d gone bankrupt. And he had decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmer’s field, who was then absolutely furious. So in a way, there’s a loose parallel, which is the same implication that exists within the film exists within real life.” “You don’t understand a word I say. Yo. What’s over there in that house?” “Someone shooting.” “It’s to do with the fact that when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant and the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant. So it doesn’t actually matter, as it were, in this context, what side they’re fighting for or what the other person’s fighting for. It’s just reduced to a survival.”

By Manohla Dargis

A blunt, gut-twisting work of speculative fiction, “Civil War” opens with the United States at war with itself — literally, not just rhetorically. In Washington, D.C., the president is holed up in the White House; in a spookily depopulated New York, desperate people wait for water rations. It’s the near-future, and rooftop snipers, suicide bombers and wild-eyed randos are in the fight while an opposition faction with a two-star flag called the Western Forces, comprising Texas and California — as I said, this is speculative fiction — is leading the charge against what remains of the federal government. If you’re feeling triggered, you aren’t alone.

It’s mourning again in America, and it’s mesmerizingly, horribly gripping. Filled with bullets, consuming fires and terrific actors like Kirsten Dunst running for cover, the movie is a what-if nightmare stoked by memories of Jan. 6. As in what if the visions of some rioters had been realized, what if the nation was again broken by Civil War, what if the democratic experiment called America had come undone? If that sounds harrowing, you’re right. It’s one thing when a movie taps into childish fears with monsters under the bed; you’re eager to see what happens because you know how it will end (until the sequel). Adult fears are another matter.

In “Civil War,” the British filmmaker Alex Garland explores the unbearable if not the unthinkable, something he likes to do. A pop cultural savant, he made a splashy zeitgeist-ready debut with his 1996 best seller “The Beach,” a novel about a paradise that proves deadly, an evergreen metaphor for life and the basis for a silly film . That things in the world are not what they seem, and are often far worse, is a theme that Garland has continued pursuing in other dark fantasies, first as a screenwriter (“ 28 Days Later ”), and then as a writer-director (“ Ex Machina ”). His résumé is populated with zombies, clones and aliens, though reliably it is his outwardly ordinary characters you need to keep a closer watch on.

By the time “Civil War” opens, the fight has been raging for an undisclosed period yet long enough to have hollowed out cities and people’s faces alike. It’s unclear as to why the war started or who fired the first shot. Garland does scatter some hints; in one ugly scene, a militia type played by a jolting, scarily effective Jesse Plemons asks captives “what kind of American” they are. Yet whatever divisions preceded the conflict are left to your imagination, at least partly because Garland assumes you’ve been paying attention to recent events. Instead, he presents an outwardly and largely post-ideological landscape in which debates over policies, politics and American exceptionalism have been rendered moot by war.

The Culture Desk Poster

‘Civil War’ Is Designed to Disturb You

A woman with a bulletproof vest that says “Press” stands in a smoky city street.

One thing that remains familiar amid these ruins is the movie’s old-fashioned faith in journalism. Dunst, who’s sensational, plays Lee, a war photographer who works for Reuters alongside her friend, a reporter, Joel (the charismatic Wagner Moura). They’re in New York when you meet them, milling through a crowd anxiously waiting for water rations next to a protected tanker. It’s a fraught scene; the restless crowd is edging into mob panic, and Lee, camera in hand, is on high alert. As Garland’s own camera and Joel skitter about, Lee carves a path through the chaos, as if she knows exactly where she needs to be — and then a bomb goes off. By the time it does, an aspiring photojournalist, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), is also in the mix.

The streamlined, insistently intimate story takes shape once Lee, Joel, Jessie and a veteran reporter, Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), pile into a van and head to Washington. Joel and Lee are hoping to interview the president (Nick Offerman), and Sammy and Jessie are riding along largely so that Garland can make the trip more interesting. Sammy serves as a stabilizing force (Henderson fills the van with humanizing warmth), while Jessie plays the eager upstart Lee takes under her resentful wing. It’s a tidily balanced sampling that the actors, with Garland’s banter and via some cozy downtime, turn into flesh-and-blood personalities, people whose vulnerability feeds the escalating tension with each mile.

As the miles and hours pass, Garland adds diversions and hurdles, including a pair of playful colleagues, Tony and Bohai (Nelson Lee and Evan Lai), and some spooky dudes guarding a gas station. Garland shrewdly exploits the tense emptiness of the land, turning strangers into potential threats and pretty country roads into ominously ambiguous byways. Smartly, he also recurrently focuses on Lee’s face, a heartbreakingly hard mask that Dunst lets slip brilliantly. As the journey continues, Garland further sketches in the bigger picture — the dollar is near-worthless, the F.B.I. is gone — but for the most part, he focuses on his travelers and the engulfing violence, the smoke and the tracer fire that they often don’t notice until they do.

Despite some much-needed lulls (for you, for the narrative rhythm), “Civil War” is unremittingly brutal or at least it feels that way. Many contemporary thrillers are far more overtly gruesome than this one, partly because violence is one way unimaginative directors can put a distinctive spin on otherwise interchangeable material: Cue the artful fountains of arterial spray. Part of what makes the carnage here feel incessant and palpably realistic is that Garland, whose visual approach is generally unfussy, doesn’t embellish the violence, turning it into an ornament of his virtuosity. Instead, the violence is direct, at times shockingly casual and unsettling, so much so that its unpleasantness almost comes as a surprise.

If the violence feels more intense than in a typical genre shoot ’em up, it’s also because, I think, with “Civil War,” Garland has made the movie that’s long been workshopped in American political discourse and in mass culture, and which entered wider circulation on Jan. 6. The raw power of Garland’s vision unquestionably owes much to the vivid scenes that beamed across the world that day when rioters, some wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “ MAGA civil war ,” swarmed the Capitol. Even so, watching this movie, I also flashed on other times in which Americans have relitigated the Civil War directly and not, on the screen and in the streets.

Movies have played a role in that relitigation for more than a century, at times grotesquely. Two of the most famous films in history — D.W. Griffith’s 1915 racist epic “The Birth of a Nation” (which became a Ku Klux Klan recruitment tool) and the romantic 1939 melodrama “Gone With the Wind” — are monuments to white supremacy and the myth of the Southern Lost Cause. Both were critical and popular hits. In the decades since, filmmakers have returned to the Civil War era to tell other stories in films like “Glory,” “Lincoln” and “Django Unchained” that in addressing the American past inevitably engage with its present.

There are no lofty or reassuring speeches in “Civil War,” and the movie doesn’t speak to the better angels of our nature the way so many films try to. Hollywood’s longstanding, deeply American imperative for happy endings maintains an iron grip on movies, even in ostensibly independent productions. There’s no such possibility for that in “Civil War.” The very premise of Garland’s movie means that — no matter what happens when or if Lee and the rest reach Washington — a happy ending is impossible, which makes this very tough going. Rarely have I seen a movie that made me so acutely uncomfortable or watched an actor’s face that, like Dunst’s, expressed a nation’s soul-sickness so vividly that it felt like an X-ray.

Civil War Rated R for war violence and mass death. Running time: 1 hour 49 minutes. In theaters.

An earlier version of this review misidentified an organization in the Civil War in the movie. It is the Western Forces, not the Western Front.
