How to Enable Cookies on iPhone

Turning on cookies in mobile Safari can make life a little easier

cookie safari iphone

  • University of Reading
  • King's College London
  • Switching from Android

What to Know

  • iOS 11 and Later: Settings > Safari > Block All Cookies > toggle switch to Off position.
  • iOS 7 through 10: Settings > Safari > Block Cookies > Allow from Websites I Visit > select desired option.

This guide explains how to enable cookies in Safari on an iPhone.

How to Enable Cookies in iOS 11 and Later

Assuming that you've already disabled cookies, enabling them again is extremely simple.

Go to  Settings .

Scroll down and tap  Safari .

Tap the switch next to Block All Cookies , so that its moves to the Off position.

That's it, you can now resume viewing websites as normal. You are asked by each new website you visit whether you accept its cookies, and you can choose to tap Yes or No according to whether you trust each website.

How to Enable Cookies on iPhone iOS 7 Through 10

Enabling cookies on iPhones loaded with iOS 7, 8, 9 or 10 (iPhones 4 to 7 Plus) is almost identical to enabling them on the more recent operating systems. However, there is one extra step involved, as shown below:

Scroll down and tap  Block Cookies .

Tap  Allow from Websites I Visit .

You could tap Allow from Current Website Only , which would mean that only first-party cookies are allowed, rather than third-party cookies from websites you've visited previously. You could also tap  Always Allow , which would enable every kind of cookie, even those that don't come from a party whose website you've visited.

How to Delete Cookies

You can choose to periodically delete the cookies you currently have stored without opting to permanently disable cookies. This might be desirable in situations where you've stored settings or visited sites you'd rather erase.

Here's how you do it:

Go to Settings .

Scroll down and tap Safari .

Tap Advanced .

Tap Website Data .

Slide individual website cookies to the left and tap Delete or remove all the cookies from the phone by tapping Remove All Website Data .

Tap Remove Now to confirm the deletion.

By doing this, you clear cookies you currently have stored on your iPhone without preventing new cookies from being saved during subsequent use.

Why Do I Need to Enable Cookies on My iPhone?

In our increasingly privacy-focused age, cookies are getting a bad rap. Some of this is justified, but this doesn't change the fact that cookies can be useful. For example, cookies remember your login data for particular websites, so whenever you return to them you remain logged in and don't have to go through the hassle of remembering your password every time you visit.

Similarly, cookies remember your settings for specific websites and domains, saving you from having to answer the same irritating pop-up that asks whether you'd like to receive notifications. For online retail sites, they save what's in your shopping basket, which means that they're all-but-essential if you're a regular online shopper.

They are, in other words, a big timesaver, which is why enabling them is advisable.

How to clear or block cookies on an iPhone to help it run more efficiently

  • If Safari isn't displaying pages correctly, or your iPhone is running out of space, you might need to clear your cookies.
  • You can clear cookies on an iPhone with just a few taps in the Settings app.
  • You can also block cookies entirely, if you're concerned about third-party websites collecting your personal information and browsing history.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

Cookies are small files that websites store on your phone or computer to help them remember information about you and your visit. In this way, they can customize and personalize your web experience. Your bank might use cookies to remember your login email address, and how to display the web page. A retailer might use cookies to remember what's in your shopping cart.

Cookies can sometimes be a problem, though. You might need to clear your cookies on an iPhone to resolve a problem with the way your browser is behaving, or to save storage space. And some privacy advocates recommend blocking cookies entirely, so that websites can't glean personal information about you.

That said, while occasionally clearing cookies can be beneficial, we recommend leaving your cookies enabled because blocking them leads to an inconvenient and unsatisfying web experience. If you've blocked cookies and later decided to turn them back on, see our article, " How to enable cookies on an iPhone to help streamline your web browsing ."

How to clear your cookies in Safari on an iPhone

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Scroll down and tap "Safari."

3. Tap "Advanced" at the bottom of the page.

4. On the Advanced page, tap "Website Data." On the Website Data page, you can see the size of the cookie files for every website stored on your iPhone.

  • To delete cookies for just certain sites, tap "Edit" and then tap the red icon to the left of the site's name. Tap "Delete" to confirm your choice.
  • To delete all your cookies at once, tap "Remove All Website Data" and confirm this by tapping "Remove Now" in the popup window.

You might want to remove not just the cookies, but all history information from Safari as well — this saves additional storage space and can help you troubleshoot if Safari is misbehaving. To do that:

3. Tap "Clear History and Website Data." Then confirm this by tapping "Clear History and Data" in the popup window.

How to block cookies in Safari on an iPhone

3. Turn on Block All Cookies by sliding the button to the right, and then tap "Block All" to confirm.

How to clear your cookies in other browsers on an iPhone

If you are using a browser other than Safari on your iPhone — like Firefox or Google Chrome, for example — you can clear the cookies in those apps as well. You won't find the controls for cookies in Settings, though. You will need to look in the app itself. In Firefox, for example:

1. Open the Firefox app.

2. Tap the menu in the lower right corner of the app (it's shaped like three horizontal lines).

3. Tap "Settings," and then tap "Data Management."

4. Tap "Clear Private Data" and confirm your decision by tapping "OK" in the confirmation window.

Other third-party browsers let you clear cookies in a similar way. Here's how to clear cookies in Chrome:

1. Open the Chrome app.

2. Tap the menu in the lower right (it looks like three horizontal dots).

3. Tap "Settings," and then tap "Privacy."

4. Tap "Clear Browsing Data" to go into a menu where you can select what you want to clear.

5. Select "Cookies, Site Data" and whatever else you'd like to erase, tap the red "Clear Browsing Data" button, and confirm when it asks you to.

Now that you have enabled Cookies on your iPhone, you need to understand why cookies are essential in the browsing experience.

What Are Browser Cookies and Why Do You Need to Enable Them

Browser cookies are small files created by sites you navigate and stored on your device. They make your browsing experience easier and hassle-free. Without cookies, you will have to log in after you leave the site every time. Also, it will take longer to load pages.

Have you added a few items to the shopping cart? You must add them again if you accidentally close the tab. Cookies will help the browser remember such information.

With Cookies, sites can keep you signed in, remember your site preference (this is how the browser remembers and showcases search history), and give you locally relevant content. After all, you won’t want to see Amazon UK ads when browsing websites from the US.

In short, browser cookies are no threat to your privacy and security on iPhone. In fact, they enhance the whole browsing experience. Some websites might not work when cookies are turned off on iPhone. It’s better to keep them enabled using the steps above.

How to Enable/Disable Google Chrome Cookies?

Google Chrome, being the browser pioneer, doesn’t offer an option to disable cookies on iPhone. It’s enabled by default.

Can You Clear Cookies on iPhone?

From browser settings, you can easily clear browser cookies on iPhone. If your preferred browser is acting weird, you may consider deleting cookies and cache on your iPhone. Just remember to save any unsaved data you may have open in the browser first. You will lose it.

Wrapping Up: Enable Cookies on iPhone

In the name of security and privacy, you shouldn’t block all cookies on your iPhone. If you have disabled cookies in the past, the steps above should help you enable cookies from Safari and Microsoft Edge on iPhone. There is no way to enable or disable cookies on Chrome. It is enabled by default so you are good to go.

How to Enable Cookies on Your iPhone (iOS 16)

cookie safari iphone

Website cookies have a pretty bad reputation today, and while it is not undeserved, it's often overstated, and most sites use cookies to make their everyday use a much smoother experience. If you're finding some of your favorite sites difficult to use for reasons like needing you to log in on each visit, it may be time to turn cookies back on.

How to Enable Cookies on Safari

On your iPhone, you only have the ability to completely block cookies in Safari, so if your main browser is Chrome or Firefox, this will not fully apply to you. You can enable a setting for those browsers to allow cross-website tracking, but in general, I would not recommend this. Leaving this toggle disabled, as it is by default, shouldn't get in the way of normal site use, and turning it on allows sites to track you in ways that have benefits mostly only for those sites and the companies that own them.

Now, here's how to enable cookies in Safari:

iPhone Life

That's all there is to it. With this option disabled, sites will be able to remember your login information and preferences, but you may also be at higher risk of being tracked and other less-than-helpful uses of cookies, so be cautious and check out our guide on how to clear cookies from Safari if you think you may have visited a malicious site.

Should I Enable or Disable Cookies on My iPhone?

Knowing how to enable or disable cookies on your iPhone is only half the battle. It doesn't help you decide whether you should choose to keep using cookies or not.

Cookies are part of what identifies you on the internet. That can lead to more personalized experiences on the web, but it also results in more tracking and data harvesting. If you value your privacy, you might want to disable cookies. But by doing so, some websites and features won't work.

Luckily, there are plenty of other steps you can take to improve the privacy of your iPhone. Another option you might want to look into is disabling ad tracking. When disabled, this ensures advertisers can’t track your activities online.

How to Clear Cookies on iPhone 11: A Step-by-Step Guide

Clearing cookies on your iPhone 11 is a straightforward process. You simply head to the Settings app, scroll down to Safari, tap it, then scroll down to ‘Clear History and Website Data,’ and tap it. Confirm the action, and your cookies, along with other browsing data, will be cleared.

After you complete the action, your iPhone will have removed all cookies, browsing history, and cached files. This means websites may take slightly longer to load initially, as they’re no longer using stored data to speed up the process. Additionally, you may have to log back into frequently visited sites.

Introduction

In the age of digital privacy concerns, knowing how to manage your online data is key. Cookies are small files that websites store on your device to remember your preferences and browsing history. They can be helpful, making your browsing experience smoother, but they can also be a privacy concern. After all, they can track your online behavior.

That’s why, for many iPhone 11 users, clearing cookies is an essential part of managing their online footprint. It’s a simple process that can help protect your privacy and clear up space on your device. Whether you’re a privacy-conscious individual, someone looking to troubleshoot browser issues, or just wanting to keep your device clean, this article is for you.

Step by Step Tutorial: Clearing Cookies on iPhone 11

Before we dive into the steps, let’s understand what we’re about to do. Clearing cookies will remove the data that websites have stored on your iPhone 11. This can help protect your privacy and free up some space on your device.

Step 1: Open Settings

Navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone 11 and tap to open it. The Settings app is the one with the gear icon. You’ll find it on your home screen or in your app library.

Step 2: Scroll to Safari

In the Settings menu, scroll down until you find Safari, then tap on it. Safari is the default browser for iPhone, and this is where all your browsing data is stored.

Step 3: Clear History and Website Data

Once in Safari settings, scroll down to the ‘Clear History and Website Data’ option and tap it. You’ll be prompted to confirm your action. Remember that this will clear not only cookies but also your browsing history and other website data.

Step 4: Confirm the Action

A pop-up window will appear asking if you’re sure you want to clear history and data. Tap ‘Clear History and Data’ to confirm. Once you’ve confirmed, the process is complete. Your iPhone will remove all stored data, and websites will no longer have access to your cookies.

Additional Information

When you’re clearing cookies on your iPhone 11, it’s important to note that you’re also clearing your browsing history and cached files. This is a good thing for your device’s storage, but it could mean that some websites will load a little slower the next time you visit them.

Moreover, if you’re someone who uses Safari’s autofill feature to remember passwords and usernames, those will be removed too. It might be a good idea to make sure you remember your login details or have them stored somewhere else before clearing cookies.

Another thing to consider is that some websites use cookies to offer a personalized experience. Clearing cookies will reset this, so you might notice that some websites seem less tailored to your preferences after you’ve cleared cookies.

Additionally, if you own other Apple devices that are synced with your iPhone 11, clearing cookies on your phone might also remove them from your other devices. This is due to iCloud’s feature that syncs Safari data across all your Apple devices.

Lastly, remember to clear cookies responsibly. While it’s a good practice for privacy and device maintenance, doing it too frequently might result in a diminished browsing experience.

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll to Safari and tap it
  • Tap ‘Clear History and Website Data’
  • Confirm by tapping ‘Clear History and Data’

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s not just about privacy; it’s about making sure your device serves you in the best way possible. So, take a few moments, clear those cookies, and enjoy a cleaner, faster, and more private browsing experience on your iPhone 11.

How to clear cookies / cache for a single website on iphone or ipad.

Clearing the cache on your iPhone or iPad is really easy, but that will log you out of every single website that you were previously logged into, and wipe any other cookie-based preferences.

Quick Links

Clear cookies / cache for a specific website.

Clearing the cache on your iPhone or iPad is really easy, but that will log you out of every single website that you were previously logged into, and wipe any other cookie-based preferences. So what if you want to just wipe cookies or cache for a single site?

Luckily that's also pretty easy... though not quite as simple since you'll have to dig through a list of all the sites you've ever visited or that have put cookies on your device.

You might be asking yourself why you'd bother doing this, and the answer is simple: if a particular site is misbehaving you can wipe the cache and cookies just for that site, login again, and sometimes the problem will be resolved.

First you'll want to open up the Settings app, and then find Safari on the left-hand side, and then scroll down until you see the Advanced on the right-hand side. If you're using an iPhone it won't display like this, but you'll be able to easily figure it out.

Now press the Website Data button.

And now push the Edit text button on the upper right-hand corner.

Now you'll see a list of the sites that have put cookies on your device. You'll probably need to expand to show all of the sites, and then browse down through the list. Once you've found the one you want to wipe, just hit the red minus icon and then press Delete, just like you would in most iOS apps.

There isn't a whole lot more to it.

How to Enable Cookies on iPhone

Cookies are good, whether we're talking about eating them or enabling them for the browser!

Sakshi Garg

Cookies are getting a bad reputation these days. And everyone thinks blocking them is the way to go to protect your privacy. While it is true that many companies use unnecessary cookies to track you and then misuse this information, not all cookies are bad. Some cookies are necessary for the normal functioning of websites.

For instance, cookies can keep you signed in to websites, remember your preferences, like whether you want to allow notifications, and give you relevant local content.

What are Cookies?

Cookies are the files that a website creates to store information about you on your device. By storing information, a site can make your browsing experience better since the file lets the website identify you.

So, when you log in on a particular website and the browser keeps you signed in, it’s made possible because of cookies. Similarly, when you leave some products in your cart while online shopping and return to find them still there, it’s the cookies at work.

There are two types of cookies: first-party cookies and third-party cookies. First-party cookies are created by the sites you visit. Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are created by other sites. Whenever you visit a website, a site can create third-party cookies if it owns any content, like ads or images, on the site that you’re visiting. It’s the first-party cookies we’re interested in. They can save you a lot of time, so it’s in your interest to enable them.

How to Enable Cookies on Safari on iPhone

If you ever disabled cookies on your iPhone previously, it’s very easy to enable them again.

Open the Settings app and scroll down till you find the option for ‘Safari’. Tap it to open it.

cookie safari iphone

Then, turn off the toggle for ‘Block All Cookies’.

cookie safari iphone

There’s also an option to ‘Prevent Cross-Site Tracking’ just above it. If you want, you can keep it enabled to block third-party cookies.

How to Delete Cookies on Safari

Sometimes you might need to clear cookies on your browser when a site isn’t behaving the way it should or when you need to empty the storage space. While leaving them on is the way to go, it doesn’t hurt to clear them every once in a while. Clearing the cookies will delete your saved information, so you’ll be logged out of any sites where you were logged in.

To clear cookies, open the Settings app and go to Safari. Then, scroll down and tap the option for ‘Advanced’.

cookie safari iphone

Tap ‘Website Data’.

cookie safari iphone

The websites with the most stored data will appear in descending order. You can delete cookies for individual sites. Swipe left on the site and tap ‘Remove’.

cookie safari iphone

To delete all cookies, tap ‘Remove All Website Data’ at the bottom.

cookie safari iphone

The above method deletes only cookies from your browser. There’s also a quicker option that lets you delete cookies along with browsing history, if you want to delete history as well.

How to Enable Cookies on Chrome on iPhone

If you use the Chrome browser to browse the internet on your iPhone, you don’t have to worry about cookies. Cookies are automatically enabled in Chrome and they stay on, so there’s nothing for you to fret about. In fact, if you ever want to disable the cookies, you really can’t, since there’s no option.

If you ever don’t want the browser to save cookies, you can use the Incognito mode. The browser doesn’t save any cookies and site data when you’ve gone Incognito.

How to Delete Cookies on Chrome

If you think cookies are slowing your browser, you can clear them. But clearing the cookies will sign you out of websites and delete any saved preferences.

Open the Chrome browser and tap the ‘Profile’ icon in the top-right corner to open settings.

cookie safari iphone

You can also tap the three-dot menu icon at the bottom-right and tap ‘Settings’ from the menu.

cookie safari iphone

Then, go to ‘Privacy’ from settings.

cookie safari iphone

Tap the option for ‘Clear Browsing Data’.

cookie safari iphone

Only check the option for ‘Cookies, Site Data’ and uncheck any others if you only want to delete cookies.

cookie safari iphone

Then, tap ‘Clear Browsing Data’ at the bottom of the screen.

cookie safari iphone

A confirmation prompt will appear. Tap ‘Clear Browsing Data’ to confirm.

cookie safari iphone

No matter what privacy advocates may be telling you, disabling cookies isn’t the best way to browse the internet. If you don’t want a seamless experience, then by all means, go for it. But for most of us, keeping the cookies enabled is the way to go.

How to make your iPhone go faster

I t’s hard to be patient with a slow iPhone , especially when using it for everything, from the calculator to getting directions on Maps. No one likes dealing with lag, buffering, or app freezing. Fortunately, there are a few ways you could speed up your iPhone.

Restart your iPhone

Let’s start with the classic “Did you try turning it off and on again?” It’s a classic for a reason, not just another tech myth. On a technical level, it helps refresh your iPhone’s RAM or working memory, which optimizes its overall performance. Since it’s probably the most straightforward hack, I’d recommend starting with this one.

There are slightly different ways to restart an iPhone based on its model. If you can’t get yours to restart, you might want to do a quick “how to restart [your iPhone model]” search. In case you’re unsure about your iPhone’s model, we have a guide for that , too.

Clear Safari Data

I’m sure we have encountered an ‘Accept Cookies’ popup. Even if you have no idea what that does, you’ve probably accepted tons of cookies by now. Refer to this helpful guide for a detailed and easy lesson on internet cookies. For the scope of this piece, all you need to know is that every time you click on ‘Accept Cookies’ on your browser, you’re putting a bunch of files on your device. These files pile up over time and end up slowing your phone.

If you frequently use Safari on your iPhone, you probably have a lot of passwords, cookies, tabs, and other login info in your Safari cache. It’s a good habit to clear that from time to time. Note that this will require re-entering login credentials or other personal info on some sites since clearing your cache will make your Safari brand new again.

To clear all Safari data, go to Settings on your iPhone and look up ‘Safari.’ Once in the Safari menu, scroll down until you see ‘Clear History and Website Data.’ It will ask you to pick a timeframe. Select ‘All history’ and then hit the red button at the bottom that says ‘Clear History.’

Free Up Space

Full storage is one of the leading causes of a sluggish iPhone. Go to Settings , scroll to General , and click on iPhone Storage from the menu. Doing so will present you with a stacked bar chart and an ordered list of your iPhone’s storage situation, clearly labeling how much space is occupied by which app.

It will also provide you with recommendations on how to free up space. Under Recommendations , click on Review Large Attachments to see the photos, videos, and attachments that are taking up the most space. When you see something you want to delete, swipe left and hit Delete .

There are other ways to free up space on your iPhone, but it ultimately depends on your priorities and your phone use. If you don’t always need all your photos and videos on your phone, you can back them up on iCloud and delete them from your iPhone. However, this would mean you would no longer be able to access them without the internet.

Similarly, if you don’t need all your iMessages, you can mass-delete them. I’ll review all the ways to clear storage on your iPhone in a separate, dedicated guide.

iOS updates often bring bug fixes that help improve your iPhone’s efficiency, so it’s a good idea to always be on the latest software update. You can do that by turning automatic updates on. Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and turn on the toggle switch for all three options on the page. This will automatically download and install iOS software updates when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi, charging, and locked.

You can also manually update your iOS. A ‘Software Update Available’ notice on your Settings app under your Apple ID will tell you there’s a newer version you haven’t yet updated to. If you see that, scroll down to General > Software Update and click Download and Install to begin the update. If you don’t see that notice, you’re on the latest version.

Replace Battery

Another possible reason for a slow phone is a battery overused to the point of dysfunction. If your iPhone is old, its battery’s health may not be ideal. To see if that’s the case, go to Settings, look up Battery Health, and click on Battery Health & Charging from the open menu. Anything 80% and above is good, but Apple recommends replacing your battery when its health falls below that mark.

Turn Off Automatic Downloads and Background App Refresh

Apps on your iPhone tend to auto-update. While this is helpful, it could become overwhelming for your phone, especially if you have many apps on it. Multiple background app refreshes also take place without you knowing. Again, this is a helpful feature, but it could lead to a considerable drop in your phone’s efficiency if you have many apps that constantly refresh and update.

Go to Settings > App Store and turn off all three toggle switches under ‘Automatic Downloads.’ These are App Downloads, App Updates, and In-App Content. Then, go to General > Background App Refresh > Background App Refresh (again) and choose Off . Doing both will ensure no power-hungry apps are running in the background. If you’d like an app updated, you can constantly manually update it in the App Store.

No, closing your background apps won’t help.

I know; I felt as deceived as you did when Gizmodo Maxwell Zeff told us that closing background apps doesn’t do anything and that I have been making my poor little thumb do all that labor for years for nothing. It’s just a tech myth that originated years ago on Apple’s community forum and Stack Overflow and has been perpetuated ever since (because it sounds like it should work!). But yeah, doing that won’t affect either performance or battery.

Are some of your apps still running slow?

Are you sure it’s your phone and not your network? People often mistake a slow connection for a slow phone. Especially if you’re experiencing lag on apps that require an internet connection, it might just be your internet that needs fixing.

To quickly check this, look up ‘speed test’ on your browser. You’ll see an ‘Internet speed test’ pop-up. Hit the blue button that says ‘run speed test.’ In around 30 seconds, you’ll get precise stats on your download and upload speeds and a comment on your internet performance.

I just ran mine, and it said, “Your Internet connection is very fast. It should be able to handle multiple devices streaming HD videos, video conferencing, and gaming at the same time.” So, if my iPhone starts acting up, I’d know it’s not my internet.

Google yet again delays killing third-party cookies in Chrome. Here's what you need to know

lance-31.png

Chrome users waiting for Google to kill third-party cookies now have to wait even longer. In a Tuesday news update , the company revealed that its plan to start blocking third-party cookies by default won't kick off until early next year, at the earliest.

Even then, the process will depend on whether Google can reach agreements with the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Both of these organizations have a vested interest in the fate of these cookies for privacy reasons and have expressed concerns about Google's plans. Google has also faced pushback from advertisers worried about the financial impact if third-party cookies disappear from the world's most popular browser.

Also:  Google's latest project could help protect you against cookie theft

This marks yet another in a series of delays and setbacks in Google's desire to curtail third-party cookies in Chrome. The company originally planned to  start blocking third-party cookies in 2022 . After that year came and went, Google  postponed the process until H2 2024 . Nudging the deadline further still, the company then announced that third-party cookies would be deprecated starting in the second half of Q4 2024. Now we have the latest delay, until early 2025.

This seems like a straightforward matter. Advertisers and companies use third-party cookies to track you while you browse the web through a process called cross-site tracking. Cybercriminals can exploit these types of cookies to steal personal information or spread malware. Cutting off support for such cookies would protect the privacy and security of Chrome users.

So, why the constant delays? In short, lots of cooks in the kitchen.

Even Google has complicated things. The company has proposed a Privacy Sandbox that would replace third-party cookies. The sandbox would still send targeted ads to Chrome users, to placate advertisers, but would limit cross-site tracking, to satisfy regulatory bodies.

Also: Google releases two new free resources to help you optimize your AI prompts

Regulators such as the CMA and ICO are not so keen on this proposal. Google's Privacy Sandbox idea is a sticking point for the CMA in particular, which in January 2024 compiled a list of 39 concerns .

The CMA is concerned that Google could continue to benefit from user activity data while limiting access to the same data from its competitors, that Google could control the inclusion of competitors in the sandbox (benefiting its own ad services), and that publishers and advertisers might be less able to identify fraudulent activity.

"We welcome Google's announcement clarifying the timing of third-party cookie deprecation," a CMA spokesperson told ZDNET. "This will allow time to assess the results of industry tests and resolve remaining issues. Under the commitments, Google has agreed to resolve our remaining competition concerns before going ahead with third-party cookie deprecation. Working closely with the ICO, we expect to conclude this process by the end of 2024."

Advertisers and industry groups are of course worried about losing third-party cookie access in a browser with such dominant market share. Advertisers depend on third-party cookies to gather a host of details about internet users for the purpose of sending them targeted ads. For that reason, they see such cookies as vital for conducting successful ad campaigns.

"Google's ambitious plan to retire third-party cookies in Chrome is facing roadblocks on multiple fronts," Sarah Jones, Cyber Threat Intelligence Research Analyst at security provider Critical Start, told ZDNET.

"Achieving a solution that satisfies the often conflicting needs of various stakeholders proves to be a complex challenge," Jones said. "Advertisers who rely on these cookies for targeted advertising, publishers who depend on ad revenue, and developers who need to implement the new solutions all have valid concerns. Balancing these needs alongside user privacy expectations and navigating the regulatory landscape set by authorities like the CMA further complicates the process."

To move forward, Google needs to get buy-in and consensus from all these disparate entities.

"We recognize that there are ongoing challenges related to reconciling divergent feedback from the industry, regulators, and developers, and will continue to engage closely with the entire ecosystem," Google said in its news release.

"It's also critical that the CMA has sufficient time to review all evidence including results from industry tests, which the CMA has asked market participants to provide by the end of June. Given both of these significant considerations, we will not complete third-party cookie deprecation during the second half of Q4."

Also:  How to stop Google from selling your browser history for ad targeting

Though third-party cookies are not blocked by default in Chrome, you can easily disable them yourself. In Chrome, go to Settings and select "Privacy and security." Click the setting for third-party cookies and check "Block third-party cookies."

This isn't the first time that Google has tried to resolve the concerns and conflicts over third-party cookies.

"Their first try, Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC), was a flop, criticized for privacy issues, leading to its replacement by the Topics API ," Jason Soroko, Senior VP of Product at Lifecycle Management firm Sectigo, told ZDNET.

"Regulatory pressures, including privacy laws and antitrust issues, are causing further headaches, complicating any new tech rollouts," Soroko said. "Additionally, creating something that doesn't just boost Google's ad dominance while respecting privacy is a legal and ethical minefield. The need to satisfy all parties--publishers, advertisers, and regulators--means Google keeps hitting walls and facing delays."

Though Google has struggled with this issue, other companies have already cut off support for third-party cookies. In 2019, Mozilla's Firefox started to automatically block all such cookies . The Standard and default mode of protection in Firefox specifically blocks cross-site cookies in all windows. In 2020, Apple completed its process to block all third-party cookies in Safari . By default, Safari prevents cross-site tracking on both mobile and desktop.

Google is still eliciting feedback on its Privacy Sandbox proposal , inviting anyone to share their thoughts. Until all the regulatory parties and other groups are satisfied, third-party cookies in Chrome are likely to stay on by default.
