The Asiatic Society of Mumbai is hosting two talks centred on Republic Day. The first one is by Kurush Dalal, director, Instucen School of Archaeology, and is titled Mumbai and the Independence Struggle. The second, by Faisal Devji, professor of Indian history at University of Oxford, is titled Gandhi’s Silence. Speaking about his talk, Dalal tells us how Mumbai’s role in Indian independence can be traced back to its transfer to the British and its emergence as a modern industrial city. “Though they did this to create a better-equipped workforce to suit their growing needs, it led to the emergence of a people who began to think of themselves and the possibility of their emancipation,” Dalal shared. A jumbo tale

There is a fascinating story of how Peter Marmorek, a five-year-old boy from Canada, once corresponded with then PM Jawaharlal Nehru, after reading an article in which it was written that Nehru had offered to provide an elephant to the zoo in the town that Marmorek lived in. The young boy wrote to the Indian PM requesting the same, and was pleasantly surprised to hear back from him in two weeks. Two years later, there was indeed an elephant on its way to Granby, the small town that Marmorek lived in. Tulika Books has now put up a video of the narration of a picture book, Uncle Nehru Please Send an Elephant. Listen to the heartwarming tale that spans across two continents, narrated by no less than Marmorek himself. Log on to: @tulikabooks on Instagram

1 Day in Mumbai: The Perfect Itinerary for First-Timers (2024)

1 day in Mumbai

If you’re planning on spending 1 day in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) as a first-timer, then you have come to the right place!

Often dubbed the “City of Dreams”, Mumbai is famous for being the place where Bollywood movies are made. This is one of India’s major cosmopolitan cities and there are plenty of things to do here.

To be honest, you could easily spend weeks exploring this city, as it’s HUGE. If you’re short on time, like I was during my visit to Mumbai, however, one day will be enough to see the highlights.

So, from seeing the Gateway to India, one of the country’s most famous landmarks to exploring ancient caves and visiting markets, here are the best things to do in Mumbai in 1 day.

14 Best Things to Do in Mumbai in 1 Day

This itinerary is quite packed, so I recommend leaving early in the morning.

It’s good to know that #3 the Elephanta Caves, #6 the Prince of Wales Museum and #12 the slums are the most time-consuming places to visit in Mumbai. It all depends on your personal pace and interest, but I would suggest picking just one or two of these places so that you don’t have to hurry.

1. See the Gateway of India

Gateway of India in Mumbai

The Gateway of India is one of India’s most famous landmarks . This monument was built in Indo-Saracenic style in 1924. It commemorates the landing of King George V and Queen Mary, who were the first British monarchs to visit India in 1911.

Later, this arch-formed monument was used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance for the Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. The Gateway of India overlooks the Arabian Sea, making it a good place for a symbolic entrance to the country.

Not that as this is Mumbai’s most popular tourist attraction, it tends to be quite crowded and if you’re a foreigner, people will ask for plenty of selfies!

Although the Gateway of India is impressive, my favourite thing about the place was the view of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which brings me to my next point.

2. Check out the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai

You cannot miss this majestic building when you’re at the Gateway of India (#1 on this list). This is from where you will have the best view of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel .

This luxurious hotel opened its doors in 1903 and, as you might have guessed, it was named after the famous Taj Mahal . Over the years, it has housed many famous guests, including presidents and movie stars.

The building in which the Taj is set is truly magnificent, and it’s good to know that, even if you don’t stay there, you can still visit the hotel’s shops and restaurants. There’s an entrance on the right side of the building.

3. Head to the Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves in Mumbai

Located on Elephanta Island, the Elephanta Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage site right off the coast of Mumbai.

This small island is home to a collection of cave temples mainly dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. They date back to the mid-5th to 6th centuries AD and they’re full of beautiful rock-cut stone sculptures.

You can take a ferry from the Gateway of India (#1 on this list) to reach the Elephanta Caves. Do note that it’s a 1-hour boat ride to reach the island and you will have to make the journey back too. So, this is quite a time-consuming place to visit.

I decided to skip the Elephanta Caves because I only had 1 day in Mumbai and I was on a budget (a ticket costs 600 INR for foreigners + 260 INR for the ferry). I visited the Bandra neighbourhood instead, which is a nice alternative if you’re on a budget too (but more about this later).

4. Have lunch at Leopold Café

Leopold Café in Bombay

Located just a 10-minute walk from the Gateway of India, Leopold Cafe is one of Mumbai’s most iconic cafes . It opened its doors in 1871 and was named after King Leopold of Belgium , although Iranis opened it.

This cafe gained popularity after it was mentioned in the famous novel Shantaram and its sequel, The Mountain Shadow by Gregory David Roberts, and it’s a great place to take a break, have a drink or eat something. I had cheesecake here and it was delicious.

Sadly, Leopold Cafe was also a target during the Mumbai terrorist attacks of 2008 , and 10 people lost their lives here. The restaurant was severely damaged during the attacks but it has been restored.

5. Pass by Regal Cinema

Regal Cinema in Mumbai

Regal Cinema is just a 5-minute walk from Leopold Café (#4 on this list) and this is one of Mumbai’s oldest movie theatres . It opened its doors in 1933 and it’s one of the few old-style movie theaters that still operates in the city.

If you’re looking for a fun activity in the evening, going to the movies in Mumbai is one of these Indian travel bucket list experiences and Regal Cinema is a great choice. After all, Mumbai is the city where Bollywood movies are made.

6. Visit the Prince of Wales Museum (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangralaya)

Prince of Wales Museum in Bombay

If you’re a museum lover or a history buff, the Prince of Wales Museum, now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangralaya (but that’s a mouthful), is one of the best places to visit in Mumbai.

This museum was founded by the British in the early 20th century and showcases the history of India from prehistoric to modern times . You will find thousands of artefacts here, which are categorized into three sections: art, archaeology and natural history.

Not only is this an interesting museum to visit, but the building it’s set in is quite spectacular too. It was designed in an Indo-Saracenic style of architecture by Scottish architect George Wittet.

7. Take a stroll in Oval Maidan and see the High Court and University

Oval Garden in Bombay

Oval Maidan is a 15-minute walk from the Prince of Wales Museum and this is a nice place for a short stroll. This is a recreational ground where locals love to hang out and play cricket.

The High Court of Bombay and the University of Mumbai are located right next to Oval Maidan and these are some pretty impressive pieces of architecture. Both of these buildings date back to the 19th century and they’re worth checking out while you’re there!

8. Pass by the Flora Fountain

Flora Fountain in Mumbai

The Flora Fountain is just a 10-minute walk from Oval Maidan (#7 on this list) and it’s on the way to the Victoria Terminus (#9 on this list).

Although this is not one of these places in Mumbai that you absolutely have to see, it is a nice place to stop by if you’re in the neighbourhood. If you’re short on time, however, skip it.

Built in 1864, the Flora Fountains depicts the Roman goddess of flowers (Flora) and it’s surrounded by some beautiful heritage buildings.

9. Admire the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus ( Victoria Terminus)

Victoria Terminus in Bombay

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is one of these places that you cannot miss, even if you’re in Mumbai for just 1 day! This is my favourite piece of architecture in the city.

Formerly called the Victoria Terminus, this train terminus was built by the British in 1887 and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in Victorian Revival architecture with some traditional Indian elements blended into it.

Make sure not to miss the BMC building while you’re here (though it would be hard to). This 19th-century building is located right across the Victoria Terminus and it’s quite impressive too. BMC stands for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and this is the governing civic body of Mumbai.

10. Visit Crawford Market

Crawford Market in Bombay

One of the best things to do in 1 day in Mumbai is to visit one of the city’s markets. Crawford Market, for example, is very close to the Victoria Terminus (#9 on this list) and this is one of the city’s best places to shop.

You will find anything here, from fruits and spices to beauty products and jewellery. This may just be the perfect place to find some nice Indian souvenirs !

Do make sure to negotiate the price before buying something here (you might want to do some research on how much something costs too) because vendors will quote very high prices if you’re a foreigner.

11. Stop by Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai

Dhobi Ghat is one of the most unique places to visit in Mumbai! This is believed to be the world’s biggest outdoor laundry place . There’s a similar place in Kolkata , but I found out about it too late. I will make sure to visit it next time I’m there, though, because I loved visiting Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai.

Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat opened its doors in 1890 and, ever since, washers have been cleaning clothes and linen from hotels and hospitals here. If you visit the place in the early afternoon, you will see how the clothes are hanging outside to dry.

Dhobi Ghat is located right next to the Mahalaxmi railway station, so it’s pretty easy to reach. You will have a good view of the ghat from the station’s bridge.

12. See the slums

Slums of Mumbai

Mumbai is home to Asia’s largest slum – Dharavi , and it’s possible to visit this place. This has become an increasingly popular thing to do ever since the movie Slumdog Millionaire came out.

Visiting slums is a bit controversial, though, and there are pros and cons to it. On one side, it can help boost the economy if done ethically, but it can also feel a bit voyeuristic.

I chose not to visit the slums of Mumbai, as I have visited many slums in the past ( Jamestown in Ghana , for example, was a great experience) and I’m not sure how I feel about Dharavi becoming more and more of a tourist attraction. This being said, I saw some slums when I took the train in Mumbai. You will see some around Bandra Station, for example.

It’s completely up to you whether you visit Mumbai’s slums or not, though. In all honesty, if I hadn’t visited so many slums already, I would have visited Dharavi. It’s estimated that over 50% of the population of Mumbai lives here , so it will give you a better understanding of what life is like for many people in this city.

Although you can visit the slums by yourself, if you go on an ethical tour, the money will be used to benefit the people who live there. This is a nice way to give something back to this community.

Note that it takes around 2,5 hours to visit the slums. So if you have just 1 day in Mumbai, it’s better to skip the Elephanta Caves (#2 on this list) and/or the Prince of Wales Museum (#6 on this list) if you decide to head here.

13. Watch the sunset at Marine Drive

Marine Drive in Mumbai

Marine Drive borders the Arabian Sea and it’s home to a long promenade which is a popular place to watch the sunset. Head to the Queen’s Necklace , from where you will have a view of Mumbai’s skyline, for the best view.

If you’re in Mumbai for just 1 day, I wouldn’t do as I do and not plan to walk the entire promenade. This is a 3.6-km long walk I slightly underestimated when I was in Mumbai. Although it is a nice place, I think the area around the Oval Maiden and Flora Fountain is a better place for a stroll. It will give you a better understanding of what Mumbai is all about too.

Note that, if you’re visiting the Queen’s Necklace for sunset, you probably won’t be the only one there as this is Mumbai’s most popular sunset spot. This being said, India is famous for being the world’s most populated country and being one of India’s major cities, there are no quiet sunset spots in Mumbai.

14. Relax at Chowpatty Beach

Chowpatty Beach in Bombay

Chowpatty Beach is argued to be one of the best beaches in Mumbai and this is a nice place to relax a little after a busy day of exploring.

If you come here in the evening, the beach will be full of food stalls and locals enjoying some time off with friends. This is a nice place to soak up the atmosphere and end your day in Mumbai.

Note that swimming is strongly discouraged at Mumbai’s beaches because the water is very polluted.

If You Have More Time

Street Art in Bandra, Bombay

How long it will take to visit the places mentioned above depends on your personal pace, so if you have more time (or if you would like to switch things up a little according to your interests), the following places are worth visiting too:

  • Mani Bhavan: This is the house where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934. It has been turned into a museum where you can learn more about this freedom fighter’s life.
  • Bandra: Often called the “Queen of Suburbs”, Bandra is the place where Bollywood actors, models and celebrities live. I strolled around this neighbourhood for a couple of hours and loved it!
  • Mumbai Film City: Mumbai Film City is the place to be if you would like to visit Bollywood film sets. It’s good to know that this place can only be visited by guided tour .
  • Four Seasons Rooftop Bar: If you would like to have a magnificent view of Mumbai’s skyline, the Four Seasons Rooftop Bar is the place to go! This is not the most affordable place to have a drink, but the view surely makes up for it.

I visited Haji Ali Dargah and the Siddhivinayak Mandir too, and if you’re short on time, these are places I would skip. Haji Ali is incredibly crowded and a little difficult to reach, and I think there are more impressive Hindu temples than the Siddhivinayak Mandir in India.

Haji Ali Dargah in Bombay

How to Get Around Mumbai

Many of the places mentioned in this post are within walking distance of each other. Some, however, are a bit further away. You can reach them by:

  • Taxi: Taking a taxi is the easiest way to get around Mumbai. I use the Ola app , which works just like Uber, to book taxis in India because taxi drivers tend to charge foreigners 10 times the normal price.
  • Train and metro: The Mumbai train and metro are super cheap. This is a good option if you’re on a budget, but it is a bit time-consuming.
  • Scooter or bicycle: If you feel comfortable driving in Mumbai yourself, you can rent a scooter or a bicycle for the day. This is a fun and sporty way to explore the city.

As this itinerary is quite packed, I would recommend taking a taxi to reach places that are further away. You could also hire a taxi for the day, this will help you save some valuable time.

If you would like to walk or get around using the train, I would either skip the Elephanta Caves or the Prince of Wales Museum as these are the most time-consuming activities in Mumbai.

Note that there are no rickshaws in South Mumbai but you will find these in other neighbourhoods.

Best Time to Visit Mumbai

The best time to visit Mumbai is in the winter, between October and February . This is when the weather will be at its best. I visited Mumbai in January and, although it was pretty hot, it was manageable.

You will find an overview of the weather that you can expect during each season below:

  • Winter (October to February): This is the best time to visit Mumbai. You can expect temperatures around 30°C (86°F) during winter.
  • Summer (March to May): Summers are hot and humid in Mumbai. While the temperature is similar to during the winter (32°C or 89.6°F), it feels much hotter due to the humidity.
  • Monsoon (June to September): While the monsoon season is slightly cooler (28° or 82.4°F), it’s very humid and on top of that, there will be a lot of rain, which can cause floods.

Where to Stay in Mumbai

There’s an abundance of hotels and hostels in Mumbai BUT this is the most expensive city in India , so if you’re on a tight budget, a dorm will probably be the best option.

If you only have 1 day in Mumbai, I recommend staying in Colaba (South Mumbai) or Bandra. This is where most tourist attractions are located. It all depends on your budget, but you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (⭐ 9.1,$$$): This is Mumbai’s most iconic hotel, and if you’re looking for a luxurious stay in the City of Dreams, this is the place to go! It’s located right across the Gateway of India and features magnificent rooms with sea, city or pool views.
  • Residence Hotel Fort (⭐ 8.3, $$): Ideally located within walking distance of Mumbai’s main tourist attractions, Residency Hotel Fort offers beautiful, clean rooms, and a delicious breakfast. It has all the amenities you might need.
  • Locomo Mumbai (⭐ 8.4, $): Located in Bandra, close to Juhu Beach, this hotel offers affordable dorm rooms as well as private rooms. The place is clean, the rooms are nice and the location is great.

1 Day in Mumbai: Final Thoughts

And voila, that was it, my complete itinerary for 1 day in Mumbai! I hope that this post has inspired you and that you will have an amazing time exploring this bustling city.

Although you could easily spend a week in Mumbai and explore different neighbourhoods every day, one day will give you just enough time to see this city’s highlights.

Happy exploring!

Republic Day in India

What You Need to Know

places to visit in mumbai on republic day

anand purohit/Getty Images

Republic Day is one of three national holidays in India . The other two are Independence Day (August 15) and Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday (October 2). Read on to find out what you need to know about it.

When Is It?

Republic Day in India falls on January 26 every year.

What's the Significance?

Republic Day marks India's adoption of a republic constitution (with a president rather than a monarch) on January 26, 1950, after gaining of independence from British rule in 1947. Understandably, this makes it an occasion that's close to the hearts of all Indians.

How Did India Become a Republic?

India fought a long and hard battle for freedom from the British empire. Known as the Indian Independence Movement, the battle spanned 90 years, starting from the large-scale Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the British East India Company in the northern and central parts of the country. During the later decades of the movement, Mahatma Gandhi (who is affectionately referred to as the "Father of a Nation") led a successful strategy of non-violent protests and withdrawal of cooperation against British authority.

In addition to many deaths and imprisonments, independence came at a price -- the 1947 Partition of India, in which the country was split along the line of religious majorities and Muslim-dominated Pakistan came into being. It was deemed necessary by the British due to growing conflicts between Hindus and Muslims, and the need for a unified secular democratic republic.

What's important to note is that although India officially gained independence from the British on August 15, 1947, it still wasn't entirely free of them. The country remained a constitutional monarchy under King George VI, who was represented by Lord Mountbatten as the Governor General of India. Lord Mountbatten appointed Jawaharlal Nehru to be the first Prime Minister of independent India.

In order to move forward as a republic, India needed to draft and implement its own Constitution as the governing document. The work was headed by Doctor Babasaheb Ambedkar, and the first draft was completed on November 4, 1947. It took almost three years for the Constituent Assembly to finally ratify it though. This occurred on November 26, 1949, but the Assembly waited till January 26, 1950, to put the new Constitution of India into effect.

Why was January 26 chosen?

During India's struggle for freedom, the Indian National Congress party voted for total independence from British rule, and this declaration was formally made on January 26, 1930.

What Happens on Republic Day?

Celebrations take place on a grand scale in Delhi , India's capital city. Traditionally, the highlight is the Republic Day Parade . It features contingents and displays from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The parade also includes colorful floats from each of India's states.

Before the parade starts, the Prime Minister of India places a floral wreath at the new National War Memorial near India Gate, in memory of those soldiers who lost their lives in battle. This is followed by two minutes silence.

Smaller Republic Day parades are held in each state as well.

  • The second most impressive show of military might (after Delhi) can be seen in Kolkata, West Bengal . An extensive military parade takes place along the historic Red Road in front of Fort William in Kolkata's Maidan, starting with a traditional military fly-past. It includes various marching contingents from the armed forces, display of weapons, military bands, and floats from various military departments.
  • The ceremonial parade at Marina Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu , commences with the hoisting of the Indian national flag near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. It's followed by a march of contingents of the armed forces, paramilitary personnel, state police personnel, and various school bands. Plus, a display of various government department floats. Local students also perform in cultural events.
  • There's a parade and cultural fair at Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground on M.G. Road in Bangalore, Karnataka .
  • In Mumbai, in Maharashtra , a Republic Day celebration is organized by the state government at Shivaji Park in Dadar and features a parade of the police force.

Indians love a good party, so many people and housing societies organize individual Republic Day celebrations. These often consist of fairs and talent contests. Patriotic songs are played through loudspeakers all day.

The Republic Day Parade in Delhi is followed up with a Beating the Retreat ceremony on January 29. It features performances by bands of the three wings of the Indian military -- the Army, Navy and Air Force. This type of military ceremony originated in England and was conceived in India in 1961 to honor the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip for the first time after Independence. Since then, it has become an annual event with the President of India as chief guest.

The Republic Day Chief Guest

As a symbolic gesture, the Indian government invites a chief guest to attend official Republic Day celebrations in Delhi to participate in India's pride and happiness. The chief guest gets to accompany the President of India, flanked by the horse-mounted President’s Bodyguards, to the place on Rajpath where the President watches the Republic Day parade. The chief guest is also given a ceremonial guard of honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President's residence), and attends an evening reception hosted by the President.

The chief guest is always a head of state or government from a country that's selected based on India’s relationship with the country concerned. Important factors include strategic, economic and political interests.

The inaugural chief guest, in 1950, was Indonesian President Sukarno.

In 2015, US President Barack Obama became the first US President to be the chief guest at Republic Day. The invitation reflected closer relations between India and the US and an era of "new trust" between the two countries.

The crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, was the chief guest at Republic Day celebrations in 2017. Although he may seem like an odd choice, there were a number of underlying reasons for the invitation such as infrastructure investment, trade, geopolitics, and deepening of relations with the United Arab Emirates to help thwart terrorism from Pakistan.

In 2018, the leaders of all 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries were chief guests at the Republic Day Parade. This included Indonesia, Malaysia , Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. It was the first time that so many heads of government and state attended the parade together. In addition, there have only been two Republic Day parades in the past (in 1968 and 1974) that have had more than one chief guest. ASEAN is central to India's Act East Policy, and both Singapore and Vietnam are important pillars of it.

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa was the chief guest in 2019. He is a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, which is significant because Gandhi was born 150 years ago in 2019.

The chief guest for 2020 was Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. India intends to strengthen its strategic partnership with Brazil through trade and potential investment in areas such as agricultural equipment, animal husbandry, post-harvest technologies and bio fuel.

This year, in 2021, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was invited to be chief guest. This is reflective of a new era of bilateral ties, with Indian Prime Minister Modi scheduled to attend the upcoming UK-hosted G7 summit as well. Unfortunately, the UK Prime Minister had to cancel his plans to attend the parade due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be the first time since 1966 that the parade is without a foreign leader.

Formerly called Bombay, Mumbai is a densely populated city on India’s west coast. It is home to an ever-volatile financial center, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), where fates are decided at every second. On the Mumbai Harbour waterfront stands the iconic Gateway of India stone arch, built by the British Raj in 1924.

Gateway of India, Mumbai

Pleasurable rides on small family ferries with the sea breeze in your hair give you the feeling of ruling the deep seas and experiencing an unusual calm even in the harsh morning sun which really does not seem so hot after all. The nearby Elephanta Island holds ancient cave temples dedicated to the highly revered Hindu God Shiva.

Visit tourist attack sites to understand the pulse of the City

This waterfront also makes you think about how Kasab and his 10-member team of terrorists landed in Mumbai via the sea route and managed to rage havoc with their planned attacks on the iconic Taj Palace on 26th November 2008 amongst other locations such as the CST – Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus formerly known as Victoria Terminus, Mumbai Chabad House, the Oberoi Trident, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, Nariman House, Metro Cinema and a lane behind the TOI Building and St. Xavier’s College.

The terror still reigns strong in the heart of every Mumbaikar. Mumbaikars have been applauded a thousand times and often been referred to as the ones who rose like a phoenix from the ashes in spite of the relentless fear caused by the attacks.

Enter the Haji Ali Dargah and experience spiritual calm

A special mention should be made about Haji Ali , a dargah which contains the tomb of Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, located on an islet off the coast of Worli in the southern part of Mumbai. The dargah is a must visit and looks ethereal during the rains. With its humid climate, the pearls of sweat shed actually don’t make you mind the heat and a stranger would find you looking fresh even at the end of a hard, tiring day at work.

See the Hanging Gardens, go to Chowpatty & spend romantic evenings on Marine Drive

If you have just a day to spend in Mumbai, you would not want to miss visiting a few sights like the Hanging Gardens , Chowpatty , Marine Drive , Mannat (Shah Rukh Khan’s abode – The King of Romance in Bollywood) or even the world’s most expensive house (Antilia) which belongs to the entrepreneur Mukesh Ambani, founder of the Reliance Group. The Bandra Worli Sealink is a joy for most photographers and it looks as if it holds the mighty sea in its strong throes. The Mumbai Dabbawalas also famous as the new-age Management Gurus are a common sight in the local trains of Mumbai. You have failed to capture the essence of the city if you have not travelled in Mumbai’s local trains. Their dry-fish induced strong odor that fazes many a new face in the city. But you get used to it quickly.

Even if there is an expected trickle of unpredictable rain which actually wants to show who’s in charge of the weather, the celebrations still go on without a hitch and that’s the beauty of the city in its unfiltered best. Food and stay prices do tend to hike during these months as the city witnesses a lot of tourists at this time of the year.

Enjoy mouth-watering Kebabs at Bademiya

The nightlife in Mumbai shows you a part of the city that might surprise and entice you at the same time. If you are a hard-core nocturnal non-vegetarian foodie, Bademiya located right behind Hotel Taj in Colaba, South Mumbai is the place to be. Relish in lip-smacking tandoori tikkas and kebabs with your 2 AM confidante to lend you company. If you frequent the nightspots, you might even happen to make a friend or two of the four-legged kind. The stray cats and dogs guard are a very common sight.

It also has world-class DJs who play the latest tracks of all kinds of genres from hip hop to Bollywood. You can also opt to stay at one of the pet-friendly hotels that will make sure your companion is taken care of. In case your pet does not like the sea air and has trouble adjusting to it, you could probably get him checked by a Vet on Call service that will check your pet and give it the go-ahead certificate.

Day Trips from Mumbai to Exotic Locales

A 3-4 hour drive, Pune offers a lot of historic sites to visit and authentic Maharashtrian Food.

Pawna lake is 117 km away from Mumbai. It is a place famous for its nature, green hills and a great day trip from Mumbai to change the scenery.

Hardly a couple of hours’ drive from Mumbai with decent roads, one can unwind their troubled minds by the sea and maybe write a few pages of a book that they happen to be working on.

Try the ferry ride from Mumbai, boarding at Gateway of India early morning and reach Mandwa and then take a bus service to Alibagh – beach destination and great to hog on seafood.

Extra Tips Before Visiting Mumbai

The city dwellers are compassionate but at the same time are always game to set out on a new adventure at any point of the day. The city is a lover of pets and owing to the dwindling pet population, the youth of the city always try to create awareness about taking extra care of its pet dogs, cats, hamsters and other pets through its events that are pet focussed and dole out unconditional love to these four-legged angels.

  • Traffic Rules are strict. Don’t argue with the cops.
  • Always carry loose change with you to give to the beggars or they will pester you till the signal turns green.
  • As per the new decree by the government, the malls and restaurants in Mumbai will now be open 24 hours.
  • Be careful with your belongings like laptops, cameras and cell phones.
  • Learn how to bargain like a pro.

The 2024 March lunar eclipse and full moon happen on the same day. Here's how to watch

S o far, 2024 has been a notable period for celestial phenomena, bringing a series of major astronomical events that have captivated skygazers worldwide. From awe-inspiring meteor showers to the enchanting glow of full moons, the year has been marked by a plethora of celestial spectacles.

Anticipation is building for the total solar eclipse coming in April , but in the meantime, you can see this: The March full moon — also called the Worm Moon — happens on the same day as a penumbral lunar eclipse, meaning an eclipse in which the Earth passes between the sun and the moon.

Here is everything you need to know about the lunar eclipse in March 2024.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

What time is the lunar eclipse in Phoenix?

According to Time and Date , the lunar eclipse will start in Phoenix at 9:53 p.m. Monday, March 25, with the maximum being at 12:12 a.m.

What happens during a penumbral lunar eclipse?

During a penumbral lunar eclipse the Earth comes between the sun and the moon. This causes the moon to move through the outer part of Earth's shadow, which is called the penumbra, according to Time and Date . Unlike a total or partial lunar eclipse, in which the moon passes through the darker central part of Earth's shadow, a penumbral lunar eclipse is more subtle.

What does penumbral lunar eclipse look like?

During a penumbral lunar eclipse, observers may notice a slight darkening or shading on the surface of the moon as it moves through the penumbra. The effect is often quite subtle, according to EarthSky,org . Penumbral lunar eclipses are generally less obvious and dramatic compared to other types of lunar eclipses.

What is the difference between a penumbral and a total lunar eclipse?

According to NASA , the primary distinction between a penumbral lunar eclipse and a total lunar eclipse lies in the segment of Earth's shadow through which the moon passes.

During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the moon traverses the outer part of Earth's shadow, known as the penumbra. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves through the central part of Earth's shadow, the umbra, causing the moon to be completely enveloped by Earth's shadow.

This phenomenon leads to a striking transformation in the moon's appearance, often giving it a reddish or coppery hue, commonly referred to as a "blood moon."

Does the moon turn red during a penumbral lunar eclipse?

No, the moon does not typically turn red during a penumbral lunar eclipse. Unlike partial or total lunar eclipses, where the moon can appear red due to the scattering of sunlight through the Earth's atmosphere, the penumbral eclipse does not involve the moon passing through the Earth's umbral shadow where the red coloration occurs.

What does penumbral lunar eclipse mean in astrology?

Astrologers often associate lunar eclipses with significant energetic shifts and changes on a personal and collective level.

In astrology, the moon's movement during a penumbral lunar eclipse may be associated with subtle shifts in consciousness, emotions and awareness.

According to Astrology.com , some people believe penumbral lunar eclipses can bring insights, revelations and the culmination of energies initiated during the preceding lunar cycle. They may also highlight introspection, releasing old patterns and aligning with one's true path.

Are penumbral lunar eclipses rare?

Penumbral lunar eclipses are not rare compared to partial or total lunar eclipses, according to InTheSky.org . Penumbral lunar eclipses typically happen a couple of times each year.

Is it safe to look at a penumbral lunar eclipse?

Yes, it is completely safe to look at a penumbral lunar eclipse with the naked eye. Unlike solar eclipses , which require special eye protection to prevent damage or blindness, lunar eclipses are safe to observe without eye protection.
