Padang is an urban-Indonesian sprawl sandwiched between the Indian Ocean and the Minangkabau hills. It is to West Sumatra what Medan is to North Sumatra (but with better scenery) – a handy transport hub with air, boat and road connections to major regional attractions, including the Mentawai Islands, Bukittinggi, Danau Maninjau and the Kerinci Highlands. Due to the sheer volume of backpacker and surfer traffic passing through, it also has an above-average amount of good budget accommodation and an excellent dining scene, with its regional food the most globally famous of Indonesian culinary offerings.

Essential Things to Do in Padang in Western Sumatra – High Time to Visit This Underrated Indonesian Gem

August 4, 2019 by Bino Leave a Comment

The name Sumatra often brings to mind images of exotic wildlife as well as gourmet coffee beans. As the largest island that entirely belongs to Indonesia, it’s also one of the less commonly explored – especially when you consider the myriad of attractions found there. The Western Sumatran capital of Padang for instance, does not receive many overseas visitors. The trickle who come would take the quickest boat to the Mentawai Islands rather than spend a couple of days in Padang. The fact that Padang is not a buzzing or up-and-coming destination certainly adds to its charms. For the most part, you’ll find yourself to be the only foreigner in a town that Indonesians have long been in-the-know about – and for good reason, too. Here are the things you can do when you visit Padang, Indonesia.

Table of Contents

Marvel at the colonial architecture at the old town of Padang

weekend cafe at padang's old town

weekend cafe at padang’s old town

Padang is one of the older colonial settlements in the island of Sumatra and in its old town, you can still find some fine examples of Dutch architecture – many which have survived the countless earthquakes that have wreaked havoc on the city. The old town of Padang is generally recognized as that area north of the Muaro river along Jalan Kelenteng II, Jalan Ps. Borong III and Jalan Batang Arau. It seems that gentrification has not caught on that much in Padang yet. In other cities, such charming old buildings could have easily been turned into cafes, art galleries or independent shops. In Padang, most of these buildings are abandoned save for the likes of Weekend Cafe (Jalan Kelenteng II, #1, open daily 11:30AM to 11PM), a “safe” brunch place that many travelers in town go to for its chic interiors and milder versions of local dishes.

Gedung Padangsche Spaarbank

gedung padangsche spaarbank

gedung padangsche spaarbank

One such heritage building is the Gedung Padangsche Spaarbank. As suggested by its name, the building used to be a bank during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia. This particular structure dates back from 1908 and at various times, have also been used for a different bank and also as a hotel. Its most recent use was as Hotel Batang Araw which existed in the early 2000s until 2009 when the great earthquake struck.

Gedung Geo Wehry & Co

gedung geo wehry and co

gedung geo wehry and co

This building is hard to miss especially if you are walking towards Sitting Nurbaya bridge. The structure used to house the local office of Geo Wehry and Co. The company used to be active in trading various commodities during the period of the Dutch East Indies. For the longest time, it is being used as a warehouse for an Indonesian company. Entrance is forbidden without permission but the real highlight is the frontage. If you look closely beneath all the stains, you can still make out the logo of the Geo Wehry & Co.

Sitti Nurbaya Bridge

view of the muaro river from sitti nurbaya bridge

view of the muaro river from sitti nurbaya bridge

The 156 meter long Sitti Nurbaya bridge is often touted as one of the most romantic spots in Padang. It is a bit of a stretch however. Sure, the view towards the river and the hillside houses provide for a bit of atmosphere but the unsightly garbage being dumped on the river quickly dissipated any mood build up, in my view.

Still, locals who are dating commonly visit this place, owing to its supposed origins in Indonesia’s own Romeo & Juliet story. You will find hawkers lining the sidewalk and locals parking their cars on the side to get out and take photos, especially during sunset.

See Hin Kiong Temple

Originally dating back to 1841, the See Hin Kiong Temple is Padang’s old town serves as the oldest temple in Padang. The structure itself has had 3 different incarnations. The original one burned down in 1861 and was rebuilt. The second version was destroyed during the great 2009 earthquake. The structure that stands now, with its elaborate carvings, was built recently and was designed by architects from China.

Gunuang Padang

You can see this place from afar, especially if you are situated in a high building. Padang’s own version of the “Hollywood” sign is displayed blatantly on a hill on a cape. Those who climb up the hill are rewarded with a view of Padang’s coastal areas. This is also said to the be place where Sitti Nurabaya’s (the lady involved in Indonesia’s own Romeo & Juliet story) tomb is situated.

Go cafe-hopping for Sumatra coffee

What’s a trip to Sumatra without a taste of the local coffee? As Padang is located in an island that serves as one of the world’s top coffee producers, there is no shortage of cafes in Padang. These hipster cafes provide for a great place to relax especially after one explores Padang’s often grubby streets. Great options include Pavilon Coffee (Jl Hayam Wuruk 20A, open daily 2pm to 10:30pm) and KiosK (Jl Tepi Pasak, 40-42, open daily 11am to 10pm). If you go to the latter, make sure to try their delicious fried noodles as well.

Adityawarman Museum

If you are looking for traditional Minangkabau architecture without heading out of Padang’s city limits, then Adityawarman Museum is your best bet. You will find plenty of exhibits there about local culture, and even local wildlife. If you’re feeling all touristy, you can also rent local Minangkabau attire for a photoshoot. But what I found most fascinating is the showcase/miniatures of various Minangkabau architectural styles found throughout the island and even the influence it has had on Malaysia’s Negeri Sembilan state.

Daytrips & Excursions to Batusangkar and Bukittinggi

minangkabau center in padangpanjang

minangkabau center in padangpanjang

  • Bukittinggi – This hill is a popular holiday spot for locals due to its cooler climate. Activities here are more kids-oriented though you can also spot some heritage structures in the form of Jam Padang (colonial clock tower) and the Sianok Canyon .
  • Padangpanjang – An easy day trip for Padang, Padangpanjang houses one of the finest Minangkabau buildings in my view. I had a bit of difficulty locating it but the  Minangkabau Information and Documentation Centre is highly recommended if you still haven’t had enough of the local architecture. While here, also check out the  Asasi Nagari Gunung Mosque with its ornate wall carvings.
  • Batusangkar – The town of Batusangkar is the former Minangkabau royal capital and is a good 3.5 hour journey from Padang. While here, check out the massive Pagaruyung Palace and visit local villages.

Getting Around

You won’t have problems getting around town with a ride-sharing app such as Grab. This allows you to pay local prices. I found most rides within town to cost roughly US$1 to US$2. Even rides out to/from the Minangkabau International Airport to Padang’s city center roughly cost around US$6 to US$8 by Grab.  For trips farther afield, I found my ride by asking one of my Grab drivers if they wanted to do customized trips. Many are happy to do so!

Where to Stay in Padang

In choosing where to stay in Padang, my main criterion was that it had to be earthquake-proof. During the great 2009 earthquake, many buildings in the city were destroyed including some notable hotels. The Ibis Padang proudly displays its earthquake-proof technology, with the usage of rubber shock absorbers in case one hits. Incidentally, it is also the tallest building in Padang. Rooms are similar with Ibis hotels one finds elsewhere. The restaurant at the top floor has great views of the city.

8 Padang Attractions To Visit, Including Beaches, The Grand Mosque & Padang Old Town

padang indonesia tourism

Padang attractions to visit

As the heart of West Sumatra, Padang is a port city where you’ll find rich natural and cultural attractions – from Padang Old Town’s Dutch colonial architecture, to Air Manih Beach tied to a local legend, to a bridge named that connects the city with Mount Padang.

Here are 8 Padang attractions to add to your future itinerary in this underrated Indonesian city.

1. Padang Beach – no need to go too far to have some fun in the sun

padang beach in west sumatra

Padang Beach is one of the most accessible tourist spots in the city, a short drive from many hotels and the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra. Known locally as Taplau, this beach gives you a clear view of Mount Padang, as well as the all-white Al-Hakim Mosque (Masjid Al-Hakim), designed to resemble the Taj Mahal in India.

Aside from enjoying the scenic view, you can also play on the beach or buy souvenirs and snacks at the many kiosks you’ll find here.

A lot of local events take place at Padang Beach, including the famous Siti Nurbaya Festival every November that celebrates all things Minangkabau culture – from boat rides to music to cuisine to traditional clothing. One more thing to note is that the sand you’ll see at this beach has an atypical brownish color, setting it apart from the white sandy beaches of more well-known islands in Indonesia.

Address: Purus, West Padang, Padang, West Sumatra 25115 How to get there: 30-minute Grab or Gojek drive from Minangkabau International Airport

2. Air Manih Beach – home to the legend of Malin Kundang

air manih beach in padang west sumatra

Another Padang beach people visit for the view is Air Manih , or Air Manis, which literally means “sweet water.” Located in the southern part of Padang, this beach is also covered with brown sand. Riding ATVs, renting a motorboat to nearby islands, camping out in a tent, or staying the night at local family-run homestays are popular activities here.

Air Manih is known for a statue linked to the Legend of Malin Kundang. It tells the story of a man who, upon reuniting with his poor and frail mother after a long journey at sea, refused to acknowledge her. He was subsequently cursed and turned into stone for his arrogance.

After years and years of exposure to the elements, the statue has slowly deteriorated. It’s recently undergone restoration, giving travelers better holiday photos.

3. Lubuk Paraku – a local bathing spot with clear water

lubuk paraku

Those of you who love swimming, but don’t fall into the category of beachgoers, can hike to the river Lubuk Paraku in inland Indarung, east of the beaches.

For only Rp. 5,000 (~USD0.36) per person, you can have access to the natural baths and changing rooms for a whole day. The pools’ crystal-clear water makes for a pristine dipping spot, and you’ll also come across a variety of fish, butterflies, and dragonflies.

Even if you’re not interested in taking a dip, you can breathe in the clean air and be enthralled by the view.

Address: Indarung, Lubuk Kilangan, Padang City, West Sumatra 25168 How to get there: 30-minute drive from the city center

4. Sitinjau Lauik – view the city and surrounding mountains

To get away from the city and see how it feels like to be 1,000 meters above sea level, go to Sitjinjau Lauik , which is often referred to as the “Padang Scenic Point.”

Despite being heralded as the city’s best vantage point, it’s not an overcrowded tourist spot so if you live in a populated urban area and are able to travel to Padang, you’ll enjoy the fresh air and greenery on this peak.

Sitinjau Lauik is only 30 minutes away from the city center, so it’ll definitely be worth visiting for the view, but come with an experienced driver familiar with the steep hill.

Address: Jalan Selayo–Padang, Indarung, Lubuk Kilangan, Padang, West Sumatra 25168 How to get there: 30-minute drive from the city center

5. Siti Nurbaya Bridge – a landmark with literary origins

6. Grand Mosque of West Sumatra – a modern Muslim house of prayer

The Grand Mosque of West Sumatra , or Masjid Raya Sumatera Barat, is the second-largest mosque in Sumatra. The compound is approximately 40,000 square meters, while the building itself is a whopping 18,000 square meters.

First opened to the public in 2014, it’s a photo-worthy contemporary example of Minangkabau architecture, particularly with its iconic roof that resembles the horns of a buffalo. It was also designed to withstand earthquakes in response to the horrific earthquake that shook West Sumatra in 2009.

7. Adityawarman Museum – get to know Minangkabau culture

Those of you who want to get properly acquainted with the history of the people of Minangkabau should drop by the Adityawarman Museum . The museum takes its name from King Adityawarman, the ruler of Malayapura – where present-day Padang is located – in the 14th century.

The roof of the museum, like that of the Grand Mosque, also resembles the horns of a buffalo, which is a prominent feature of traditional Minangkabau architecture.

The museum’s collection includes archeology, history, and fine art from the region, and is labelled both in English and Indonesian. Entry is affordable too, so do swing by if you want to enrich your cultural knowledge.

Address: Jalan Diponegoro #10, Belakang Tangsi, West Padang, Padang, West Sumatra 25114 Entrance fee: Rp. 3,000 (~USD0.21) How to get there: 19-minute drive from the city center

8. Padang Old Town – a blast from the colonial past

old town padang

To get a grasp of the kaleidoscopic history of the city of Padang, a trip to the Old Town , or Kota Tua , is not one to miss. Dutch colonial-era buildings mark the area as it was once a busy commercial hub.

The Old Town has always been a cultural melting pot. Kampung Pondok, a subsection of the quarter, is heavily influenced by Chinese culture and is home to the See Hien Kiong (also known as the Tri Dharma Temple or the Kelenteng See Hin Kiong).

Unfortunately, earthquakes over the years have damaged several buildings in West Sumatra – and some Padang Old Town structures haven’t been spared. Still, those of you who are deeply interested in old buildings and their connection to daily cross-cultural life should take their time in the Old Town.

Journey Beyond the Horizon

Things to do in Padang, Indonesia- info, tips and ideas

West Sumatra in Indonesia is an off-the-beaten-path tropical paradise, full of jewels, most of them still undiscovered by most travelers. And those who are familiar with this place, know about the fantastic Mentawai, the city of Bukittinggi, or Mount Kerinci. When they arrive in Padang, they usually use it only as a starting point to these destinations. But don’t skip Padang, add more travel experience to your adventure, there are certain things to do in this city!

Table of Contents

Basic info about Padang

So, you arrive at Minangkabau International Airport- the main airport of West Sumatra. This is the entry point for Padang, the capital of West Sumatra Province. The center of the city is more than 20 km south of the airport. When you travel to the center, you can notice that it is a colorful city with low buildings, full of life. And your eyes can’t skip the wonderful weird roofs of some of them, reminding you of buffalo horns!

Some geography

This is Padang , the administrative and cultural center of West Sumatra . It is established on the plain between the Barisan Mountains (the main mountain chain of Sumatra Island) and the coast of the Indian Ocean. The mountains, rising east and south of the city are covered by lush equatorial rainforest, and the coast is straight, with long sandy beaches.

An image of Padang- no high buildings

A curving river flows from the mountains and through the southern part of Padang. It is called Batang Arau River, and it “closes” the flat plain between the ocean and the mountains. South of it is a hilly area, and the coast is different- it is rugged, with promontories, bays, nearby islets, and small beaches.

Padang is located in a highly seismic area. The main rift between the Asian and Indian Ocean plates is here and the city is regularly hit by earthquakes. However, you don’t need to worry- the earthquakes are not stronger and not more than those in Tokyo, California, or Istanbul.

The ancient local people discovered the good properties of this place and created Padang. Let’s see how.

Some history

From ancient times, the lands around what is today Padang were covered by jungles and inhabited by Minangkabau people who lived in scattered villages beside the ocean coast and the rivers. Some local kingdoms and even empires controlled this area but with an insignificant presence.

In the 14th century, the land of Padang became a part of Pagaruyung Kingdom. Gradually, the villages around the Batang Arau River merged and established a trade harbor. And since the 16th century, the new village cluster, now called Padang, started its growth as a trade center with the neighboring kingdoms and the first Europeans. Pagaruyung kings ruled over Padang until 1663.

Traditional Minangkabau clothing

From 1663 to 1942, Padang has been mostly a part of the Dutch Indies, and only temporarily under the control of the British Empire. Actually, the Pagaruyung Kingdom still existed until the 19th century, but the authority of the Dutch was higher than that of the Pagaruyung kings.

As in the rest of Indonesia, it was the colonial period of Padang. The city continued growing, and more cultures were added to the local Minangkabau- the Dutch culture, and the Chinese, some of which migrated here. The best area where you can see the traces of them is beside the Batang Arau River, where you can spot some buildings in Dutch architecture, as well as the small Chinatown.

In 1942, Padang was conquered by the Japanese for three years. And when they left, the newly independent Indonesia was established. The city grew more and gradually developed into a modern metropolis. And due to the exotic destinations nearby, travelers started noticing Padang, although the tourism is still in an initial stage here.

Some culture

When you walk around the streets of Padang, you can see what the people look like. Almost all women wear hijab, and many men have beards and traditional Muslim caps. They are Minangkabau, and most of them are Muslim.

But although they are conservative, they are very friendly. It is totally normal when a foreigner (non-Indonesian-looking) walks around the streets to hear “Hello Sir”, from men and women. These people are also very helpful, and in general, you can feel safe and cozy in Padang.

Our journey to Padang

Padang was inevitably the first destination of our West Sumatra journey since we arrived by plane.

We came from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Padang was our starting point for visiting Mount Kerinci , the Mentawai Islands , and the area around Bukittinggi . It was not a circle route, so we had to back to Padang three times. And we used these opportunities to explore the most essential of this city.

Below are the eight best and most essential things to do in Padang. We tried seven of them (we skipped the eighth, visiting a nearby small island, because we had a similar experience in one of our next destinations- Sipora Island of Mentawai), and we can say that we got the taste of this nice and cozy city.

Things to do in Padang

Some of these things are related to certain spots, while other things you can try everywhere in Padang.

For first-timers: get familiar with the local life!

This is mostly for those who visit most of Indonesia for the first time. I mean, if you have already been to other neighboring cities in Sumatra, you probably would not see too much difference in Padang. But if you haven’t been to Indonesia yet, or you have been only to Bali or Jakarta, this experience is highly recommended.

You can try it everywhere in Padang, in every part of the city. But still, the best area to do it is in the center. Go to Pasar Raya and the area around Imam Bonjol Square. Here you can see just normal average streets, but also a nice park, a lively market, shops, restaurants, and more.

A local market street in Padang

So, walk around, buy some fruits from the market, do some shopping (you may not be a fan of shopping, but now this is about diving into the local life rather than shopping itself), or just relax in Imam Bonjol Square. Then, go to a café or a restaurant to see how everything looks and tastes!

Explore the Old part of Padang- Chinatown and the Dutch architecture

This is the historical and cultural core of Padang, the oldest part of the city. It is located north of the Batang Arau River. Here you can see not only an ordinary local urban area but also some old Dutch buildings, as well as the Chinese temples and halls of Padang’s Chinatown.

You can explore it on foot. The best route can start from the last railway station of the local train- Pulau Aie and can end at Mentawai Fast Harbour . It is about a 20 min walk. First, you can see one of the oldest mosques in Padang- Masjid Muhammadan, then you enter Chinatown. The highlights in this area are Kelenteng See Hin Kiong Temple, the Chinese halls, Pasar Tanah Kongsi (a local market), and some cafes and restaurants (if you want to try Chinese meals, go to Liong Hai restaurant).

From Chinatown, go south to the north bank of the Batang Arau River and just follow it. On the way you can see several old Dutch buildings like Gebouw van Padangsche Spaarbank, and Gebouw Handelsonderneming “Geo Wehry & Co”. And there are dozens of elegant cafes where you can relax.

A Chinese temple in Chinatown

On your way, you can’t skip the Siti Nurbaya Bridge. Although it is just a normal bridge over the river, with normal traffic on it, it is beautifully decorated with flowers and other ornaments, making it one of the local landmarks. Eventually, you will reach Mentaway Fast Harbour, the starting point for a journey to the fantastic Mentawai Islands. And beyond it is the coast of the Indian Ocean.

Visit Adityawarman Museum

This is the largest and most representative museum of history and culture in West Sumatra. And it is located again in the same area, not far from the Batang Arau River and the old town.

Adityawarman Museum is named after the first king of Pagaruyung Kingdom, who reigned over what is today West Sumatra in the 14th century. It is arranged in a splendid traditional Rumah Gadang house, with its typical buffalo-shaped roof and richly ornamented walls. The building, as well as other additional buildings containing more exhibitions behind it, is established in a beautiful garden with two rangkiangs (traditional rice granaries).

Adityawarman Museum

The museum contains several exhibitions. The largest and most important of them is located in the main Rumah Gadang building (Minangkabau house) which has two floors. It consists of historical and ethnographical relics, mostly from the Minangkabau people, as well as some from the Mentawai. There are also natural and technical exhibitions in the buildings behind the Rumah Gadang.

Entrance fee: 5000 IDR Working hours: from 8:30 to 17:00. Monday: closed.

Try the Minangkabau cuisine

The local Minangkabau cuisine is well-known in the whole of Indonesia and beyond. It is well-known for its heavy use of coconut milk and chili, something with curry. Here the people eat mostly rice and sometimes noodles as basic meals.

So, in general, the local food is spicy. Not too spicy, but enough to make a problem for those who can’t get used to eating spicy (anyway, you still can tell the waiter in the restaurant to not add spicy ingredients, and in most cases they understand, at least can make it much less spicy).

While you walk around Padang, you can see several types of restaurants and food corners. The most traditional one is where a lot of meals are exposed in buffet style, and you just choose from whatever you want. You can use a spoon and a fork, but if you want to be like a local, you have to eat directly with your fingers. And there is always a cup with water where you can wash your fingers.

Besides these, you can find more “normal” restaurants with a menu (instead of exposed meals). The most popular meals in such places are nasi goreng (spicy rice with egg), mie goreng (spicy noodles with egg), ayam goreng (chicken with rice), and more.

Spot the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra, one of the main landmarks of Padang

This is one of those projects in the world that are intentionally designed to serve as a grand symbol of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. In Padang, this is the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra- a religious center, and a landmark at the same time.

The Grand Mosque is located in a different place, a few km (miles) north of the old town. It was accomplished in 2014, and it is the second-largest mosque on the island of Sumatra. The mosque’s design is unique and is intended to present the traditional Minangkabau Rumah Gadang roof style. There is a large square-type garden around it.

The Grand Mosque of Sumatra

Today, it is an active religious center, but for those who are not Muslims, it is a landmark for visiting and exploring. It is a good spot for photos, and you can also enter inside (but with proper clothes, of course) and see its interior.

Enjoy the views of the beach

Padang has a long beach, a part of a long beach chain on the southwest coast of Sumatra Island. This is not a beach for swimming- no people are swimming or relaxing on the sand under an umbrella, like in the “classical” beaches. First, because the water is not so clean- several murky-water rivers flow into the ocean and much of the city water pollution flows with these waters too. And second- the local people still don’t have this “mass-beach” culture, partly due to their religion.

But the charm of the beaches of Padang is in the panoramic views. There is a road with an alley beside it, and it is perfect for a walk. If you walk to the south, on your left side will be the colorful urban park of Padang. And on your right side- the vast Indian Ocean. However, it is not “empty”- you can notice several small islets like spots before the horizon.

Padang Beach

And the most beautiful part of the beach is its southern end. It ends with the mouth of the Batang Arau River, and beyond it is a small hill covered with lush forest, with letters “PADANG” on it. And before the end of the beach, on your left side, you can see another landmark mosque. This is Masjid Al-Hakim, entirely in white color, built in 2020.

Go to the green south

What is south of the Batang Arau River? Here the landscape changes drastically. It is hilly, covered by equatorial rainforest, with a rugged coastline. The first hilly area is Puncak Gado-Gado, today used mainly as a park, with some villa and resort zones, and entertainment spots. The highest point of Gado-Gado is not too tall, but it reveals breathtaking views of Padang, the Indian Ocean, and the small islands in it. Today, it is a popular place for paragliding.

There are several beaches in this area (different than the long beach of Padang in the north). The most popular beach is Air Manis. Its coast is full of stalls, restaurants, and cafes, and it is well-known for ATV activities on the beach sand, especially during low tide.

Air Manis Beach

And there is a small famous spot on the beach, called Malin Kundang. It is a rock formation that looks like a prostrating man. According to a local legend, there was a son who disowned his poor mother and she cursed him to turn into a stone.

Finally, you can rent a motorboat to the nearby islands of Pisang Gadang and Pisang Ketek. They are small “tropical paradise” types of spots, great places for relaxation.

Float to one of the small islands offshore of Padang

I already mentioned Pisang Gadang and Pisang Ketek. But there are more than 15 small islands not far from Padang. You can see some of them from the long beach of Padang, while others are hidden in the south, beyond Gado-Gado.

These small islands are uninhabited, covered by jungle and coconut palms, usually with small beaches. They are flat, no more than 400-500 m wide and long, and are great spots to escape from the city. The waters around them are cleaner than at the beach of Padang, but still not crystal clear, because they are not too far from the mainland coast.

On an island near Padang

Some of these islands can be reached by a “boat taxi” from Air Manis Beach, or from Semen Padang Port. Those of them with resorts usually can be reached only by private resort boat, arranged only for the guests of the resort (like Pulau Sinyaru). And some islands like Pulau Pieh are completely uninhabited, but you can rent a boat to go there- the waters around Pulau Pieh are great for diving.

Useful tips

These are essentially the best things to do in Padang. And you can accomplish these activities for two days. However, you have to be prepared with some useful information- about transportation, accommodation, and other important details.

How to reach Padang and roam around it

Usually, travelers reach Padang from Minangkabau International Airport, as a traditional entry point. Although the airport is international, the only convenient connection with abroad is from Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia. There are also flights from Jeddah and Medina, Saudi Arabia, but obviously, they are mostly used by Muslims who go to Mecca, rather than foreign tourists.

Check for flights to Padang!

However, there are domestic flights from Jakarta, Batam, and some other cities in Sumatra. So, if you are previously in other parts of Indonesia (like Bali or West Java), you can use these flights.

Another option is to include Padang in your on-land journey- by bus, or by car, from Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, or other destinations in Sumatra. There are travel vans that operate between these cities and they are not expensive.

But let’s back to Minangkabau Airport. Once you get your Visa on arrival (unless you have already gotten it in advance), you go out. There are taxis and private drivers waiting for tourists outside. Needless to say, they are expensive. But there are cheaper options to go to the center of the city.

Minangkabau Airport

This is a very convenient system, well-developed in Padang, with cars or motorcycles. You have to download your Grab app on your phone in advance, point your destination, and book. Of course, you would need some internet, and if you haven’t bought your SIM card in advance, there is free WiFi at the airport. Use it! Usually, getting to the center by car is about 80,000 to 100,000 IDR (about 5-7 USD), and from 60,000 to 80,000 by motorcycle.

This is a cheap and very convenient option. A van takes passengers for 400 m from the airport to the first railway station. Then, the price to the center is only 10,000 IDR. There are only 5 trains per day but their schedule is calculated according to the arriving flights.

City transport

There are various types of local transport around Padang. Ojeks (motorcycle taxis) can be easily found everywhere, but for foreigners, they are always more expensive than Grab. Angkots (red vans with open doors) are very cheap and usually used only by locals unless you know their routes. Their price is between 5000 and 10,000 IDR. There are also several city buses but with limited route range.

But again, the most convenient way is Grab. There is another system, called Maxim, and it is similar to Grab, with the same prices. You can use both of them. Their prices are fixed by the app, but they would be always happy to get some tips. You can pay them in cash.

However, keep in mind that they seldom go to more remote areas like Air Manis- yes, they can take you there, but when you want to back to the center, you can’t find them but only local, more expensive ojeks.

Where to stay in Padang

Hotels in Padang are cheap. Even the most luxurious ones like Truntum Hotel offer rooms for only 50 USD per night. Keep in mind that the cheapest hotels are between 6 and 10 USD, but their quality can be very low. For example- dirty rooms, dirty toilets, out of the room, without hot water, etc.

You can easily find a lot of hotels on Booking or Agoda . The best area to stay is the old town, especially if you plan to go to the Mentawai Islands on the next day with the ferry from 7:00 a.m. This location is more touristy and convenient for exploring the area.

Check for accommodation in Padang on Booking!

Check for accommodations in Padang on Agoda!

The travel vans that go for Sungai Penuh (including Mount Kerinci and other destinations in the area) depart from Tabing, in the north of Padang, far from the old town. There are a few hotels in Tabing but with very low quality. So, since the travel vans can roam around the city before leaving it, you can ask the hotel manager in the reception to call them, and they can pass by your hotel to take you.

I would advise you to talk to them by Booking or Agoda messages before you arrive. I booked a hotel in Tabing (I thought it would be convenient for my next destination Mount Kerinci) on Agoda, but when I arrived, they told me that they no longer work with Agoda, so I had to pay twice. At least, the people from Agoda were so good to refund me the money.

Another option is Airbnb, which can allow you to get closer to the local people. However, it is usually more expensive than the hotels.

Keep in mind that most people in Padang (and in the whole of West Sumatra) can’t speak English. So, the only way to communicate with them, other than “body language” is to use Google Translate. And for that, you would need the Internet.

Getting a SIM card in Padang is not as easy as it looks. Have it in mind if you haven’t bought it online in advance! First, there is no SIM card shop in Minangkabau International Airport. You have to go to the center, and you can find some shops. But the cards they cell are usually problematic- you have to insert your Indonesian ID card (which obviously you don’t have if you are a foreigner!), and the whole guide on how to install it is in Indonesian.

So, the best way is to go to the central offices of the Indonesian mobile companies. The best of them is Telkomsel, and I bought a SIM card with 30GB of internet for 80,000 IDR. You can add an additional 30,000 to include minutes for talking on the phone.

The whole procedure was slow (I waited more than 2 hours in their office until the girl inputted all the necessary information and installed my SIM card). But it was worth the waiting- I had good quality Internet, and I could freely browse, look at the maps, and communicate with Google Translate everywhere, even in some remote areas in the next destinations of our trip later.

Padang is located very close to the Earth’s Equator, and it has an equatorial climate. It is a quite wet city, one of the wettest in Southeast Asia. There is not much difference between the “dry” and the “wet” seasons. Sometimes, it can rain a whole morning, sometimes- only about 30 min in the afternoon. And very seldom- without rain at all. Statistically, the least wet (I would not say “dry”) months are February and July.

This is Padang- a nice city full of life, in a beautiful tropical area. It is also full of local culture, with friendly people, and definitely worth exploring before you leave for the other exotic and adventurous destinations in West Sumatra.

Padang is the capital city of West Sumatra , Indonesia . It is mostly used by tourists as an access point to Bungus Bay , the surfing sites of the Mentawai Islands , the inland hills of Bukittinggi , and the Kerinci Seblat National Park .

Understand [ edit ]

The city is very pleasant with a nice promenade along the beach, distinctive Padang architecture and wonderfully friendly people. The city is also the home of the delicious Padang food and the town is stuffed with restaurants and street stalls. The locally available guidebook 'Sozzie Sumatra' can be referred to on arrival for upcoming local events and a current 'what to do' section.

Padang is a considered to be the main centre of Minangkabau culture. Unusually among the world's Muslim peoples, the Minangkabau are matriarchal, with husbands moving into their wives' homes after marriage, and with family possessions being passed from mother to daughter rather than father to son.

By plane [ edit ]

From the airport, the cheapest way to get into the city is by Minangkabau Express Airport Train, for a fare of Rp 10,000 per person, departs only five times a day, due to the single-track railway operation.

Damri bus also connects the airport with the city for a fare of Rp 25,000 per person. Its route passes by the major hotels in Padang. The bus departs the city every hour from 04:30 and the last one at 18:00. The trip takes roughly 45 minutes depending on the traffic.

Taxis and rental cars are also available at the airport.

By train [ edit ]

Rail transport to Padang are limited, the only passenger trains running is a service from Pariaman several times per day. This connection can be quite useful if traveling from Jakarta overland. The main station is -0.94186 100.373688 2 Stasiun Padang , located just off Jl. Dalam Gadung road.

By bus [ edit ]

There are many luxury buses from Java to Padang, mostly from Jakarta and Bandung. It is a good option for the budget if you don't mind being on the road for two to three days, since flight tickets can cost more than three times of their normal price, especially during Eid Al-Fitr season.

Get around [ edit ]

Crazily-decorated angkots run along the two main roads. Prices for a trip are approximately Rp 2,000. You can get taxis from the Minangkabau International Airport to town for less than Rp 50,000 if you speak the language.

If you are obviously foreign, Minang people are well known to be good business people and are quite skilled at making you pay a few extra thousand rupiahs. But don't bother squabbling over 50 cents here or there.

There are several alternatives that you can choose for transportation in Padang, such as bus kota (for city bus transportation), angkutan kota (for transportation in the city), taxi, and car rental. Most public transportation is not safe and clean by international standards. During rush hour, the buses are overcrowded. Be careful with your valuables, although pickpocketing is very rare.

If you're looking to spend a few days in Padang, car rental is the preferred way to go around. All car rentals include the driver, who can also act as your guide. It's not recommended for tourists to self-drive, because road signs are not followed by the locals and courtesy while driving is virtually nonexistent in Indonesia.

If you need a taxi, Argo, Blue Bird Taxi and Grab Taxi apps can be downloaded for free. Fill the departure and arrival points and Google Maps will show the map and the taxis and also estimate the cost in a range. Taxis arrive within 5 minutes after being summoned. Only qualified taxis and qualified drivers can join the apps. The service is available in Bukittinggi and Payakumbuh as well.

Relaxing is the main thing to do here. This is a mainly administrative city. Honestly, there isn't too much to do downtown. But if you go uptown, some interesting spots await to be explored. These include Sikuai Island , Lubuk Minturun river (a 'natural jacuzzi') and Bungus Bay (crystal water river), all in southern Padang.

Pool/Billiard is a popular sport to play and there are a few places dotted around.

The nightlife is relatively dull because Padang is a minor city and a rather devout Muslim community. Bars are available at some hotels but don't expect alcohol.

If you can find your way down to Chinatown and get some kripik Padang (crackers, available in two flavours: spicy and sweet), that could be a good idea, too. In Chinatown, you also can explore the mixture of Minang-Chinese food.

Buy [ edit ]

There are a lot of stores on the side of the road, much like anywhere else in Indonesia. There are two malls, Minang Plaza, which is smaller and better for your more supermarket and basic clothing needs. There is a bit of Western Food at Plaza Andalas in the form of Papa Ron's Pizza.

Shopping at Andalas is a little bit better, but at this point in time, the malls are more downscale, mainly local products and local shops. No big retailers here. Brand names aren't really easy to find. You could find a few surfing items at Andalas plaza - but that's about it.

There is a Gramedia across the road from Andalas Plaza also.

Eat [ edit ]

Padang is famed throughout Indonesia for spicy Padang food ( masakan Padang ). Ordering at a Padang restaurant couldn't be easier: just sit down at a table, and watch the dishes pile up. Eat what you like, as you'll only pay for dishes you've actually consumed. Famous dishes include:

  • Beef Rendang , spicy curried beef cooked until the sauce is dry.
  • Soto Padang , crispy beef in spicy clear soup.
  • Ayam Pop , chicken that has been boiled in coconut juice and then fried for a short time.
  • Sate Padang , beef satay in curry sauce, served with ketupat (Indonesian rice cakes).

Padang dishes can use rather unusual ingredients though, including internal organs like hearts, lungs and even brains. One notable dish is Gulai Tambusu , which consists of cooked egg wrapped in cow intestines and served with a curry. All Padang/Minang dishes are Halal due to the Islamic roots of Minang people.

Drink [ edit ]

The only real bars you will find are at the major hotels. This is a very Islamic community and therefore the influence of alcohol is minimal. That being said, beer is for sale at the major supermarkets. Bintang is about all you will find. If you are feeling game, the traditional market could be something you might want to visit, as hard liquor such as Johnny Walker may be available there.

Hard liquor is also available at several warungs (small shops on the side of the road) and it is quite easy to obtain cheap vodka, whisky or rum. The going rate for a 250-ml bottle of spirits is Rp 23,000.

The best nightclubs in Padang are Hotel Pangeran Beach, Rocky Hotel, Ambacang hotel (the newest hotel) and Queen.

Insiders’ tips

  • Padang is home to one of Indonesia’s large population, with over 1 million and counting residents. Expect major cities and areas open to tourists to be crowded as it can’t be avoided!
  • Bring along a pair of slippers and raincoat for your trip here as it rains often in Padang. The roads flood quite easily as the city is still in the process of repairing the damage from the massive earthquake of recent years.
  • Padang is also a conservative city, with Muslims being the major population here. When entering religious sites, it is advisable to respect the holy places by wearing less revealing clothes.
  • There are a lot of restaurants all over the city. Common Padang-style restaurants will serve you all of the local dishes on the table and you will pay only for those you have eaten.
  • Car rental is the best and most convenient option if you are looking to spend a few days in Padang. The price usually comes with a driver that can also be your guide. It can be hassling to drive here on your own since the road signs can be a bit confusing.

Encompassed by jungle-clad hills, terraced rice paddies and glistening Indian Ocean beaches, the city of Padang is a conglomeration of trader warehouses packed with aromatic cinnamon and spices, traditional Indonesian homes and rustic bamboo shacks, anchored to its place on the south-eastern coast of Sumatra by a cosmopolitan local population of Chinese, Indonesian and European ex-pat alike.

Start by asking your Padang tour guide about the medley of markets that pepper the town, lurking between the sporadic traces of dutch colonial architecture and the banks of the Muaro River, selling woven cloths and whittled trinkets from the Minang hills. Then, why not delve into the bustling streets of Chinatown, sampling some of the region’s famous masakan Padang (comprising mainly of spicy beef curries and chilli laden satay)?

And once you’ve had your fill of city life, consider a walk along the pretty stretches of Padang Beach, where local juice sellers cluster to offer refreshments over a sunset show. Or, break out even further, to the beaches and legendary surf swells of the nearby Mentawai Islands, or the rugged caves and canyons of Bukittinggi town in the hills.

Tell us your destination, date, and group size.

The Getaway to the Minang Highlands

Padang is the gateway to the Minang highlands. With the largest port on Sumatra’s West Coast, this is a merchant town attracting ships trading in goods such as rubber, cinnamon, coffee, tee, cement and coal. If you take a stroll down to the old colonial waterfront you’ll see century old warehouses stocked with fragrant cinnamon and other spices waiting to be shipped to Jakarta and Singapore.

Air Manis is Padang’s most popular beach, located about one hours walk along the coast, or a quick trip in a minibus. The legend of the beach says that once a young man named Malin Kundang went out to sea to become a rich merchant. Famous throughout Indonesia for its distinctive cuisine, Padang is the place to go to sample the famous spicy nasi padang food that has spread throughout the country and the world, includes such delicacies as the spicy coconut curry rendang and soto padang. Experience the unique way Padang food is served. Watch how waiters expertly carry more than ten plates with all kinds of delicacies on both arms. These dishes will then be spread out on the table for diners to pick and choose.

Padang is half-way up Sumatra’s west coast and is served by a good network of land, air and sea routes. Padang’s new airport is the Bandara Internasional Minangkabau, 20 km north of the centre of town. Domestic flights go daily between Padang and Jakarta, Medan and Palembang. Airlines operating flights to Padang include Garuda, AirAsia and Lion Air. Padang’s Bengkuang bus terminal is located 12 km from town.

Most attractions in Padang are within walking distance but if you need a break, there are metered taxis available. Although slower, a more romantic option is to take a bendi – a horse drawn cart. The city is also serviced by mini buses and buses.
