Travel company Elsewhere is making authentic and local travel easier than ever

Elsewhere_FB

As you look to explore the world once again you may find yourself searching for trips that offer more profound, authentic and off-the-beaten-path travel experiences. That's where the travel company Elsewhere comes in.

Elsewhere was founded by tourism industry veterans Alexis Bowen and Craig Zapatka, who have spent more than a decade working in that field. From on-the-ground tour guide skills to running operations on the back end, they know the travel world from the inside out.

Born during the onset of the pandemic, Elsewhere presented a chance to turn the travel industry's downturn into an opportunity. The result: a brand-new travel company with a mission to help people travel better, more responsibly, more authentically — and have the time of their lives.

Bowen and Zapatka are on a mission to offer authentic, personalized travel planning services. Their goal in creating Elsewhere is to connect travelers directly with local experts to create experiences that dig deep into destinations while ensuring tourism dollars go to the residents of the places people visit.

"Our trips allow you to see beneath the surface of a destination. We operate extraordinary trips — trips that are off the beaten path and trips that allow for opportunities of authentic exchange," Bowen said. "Our goal is to open travelers' eyes to unique insights and ethically memorable experiences."

One of the biggest challenges in planning an international trip that goes deeper into more authentic activities and itineraries is time, which not everyone has the ability to devote.

Elsewhere understands this, and because of its on-the-ground support and experts, it can save travelers massive amounts of planning time while offering them experiences that otherwise would be inaccessible to even seasoned travel planners.

Get started: Plan a trip of a lifetime with Elsewhere

Working with locals

A pillar of Elsewhere is local insight.

The company connects you with certified local travel agents who not only live in the destinations they serve but who also are wholly and completely immersed in those places.

Their years of experience and time spent building close personal connections with their local communities allow them to provide unforgettable, "unGoogleable" experiences, whether that's tracking jaguars in the Pantanal region of South America or learning how to make traditional Japanese knives with an artisan. These are authentic, immersive experiences that create memories that last a lifetime.

"When you take a trip with Elsewhere, you're getting up-to-date, reliable recommendations, like when you ask a trusted friend for advice," said Bowen. "Our local experts invite you into their communities, introduce you to their culture and guide you to less-touristy locations and experiences that only they can show you. This is a surprisingly big differentiator in the business, but it's what makes our trips so special."

Tiago Rodriguez, Elsewhere's charming Portugal expert, has nearly 20 years of travel industry experience under his belt. He's known for going above and beyond for his travelers, as he did recently while planning a couple's honeymoon.

local travel operators

After learning that the bride's grandparents had been married in Portugal, Rodriguez took it upon himself to bring the newlyweds to the town where her grandparents got married. However, he didn't stop there. He asked around to find any other connections to the bride's family and, through his network of friends and locals, located someone who remembered the grandparents and took them to the specific church where they were wed.

Because of these types of direct connections, whenever you have a question, an idea or just some aspect of the trip you want to talk through, you won't be dealing with call centers, long response delays or third parties. You will be speaking or interacting directly with the company's local expert.

Local economies

It's not fun to talk about, but the unfortunate reality is that at times, the travel industry has done significant damage to not only the planet but also the people in the communities that travelers visit. Elsewhere believes in the power and importance of seeing the world while being mindful of the impact that travel experience may have on communities. Like physicians, their credo is: First, do no harm.

One in 11 people work in travel and tourism globally, but many aren't paid a livable wage. The bulk of tourism revenue in many traditional models ends up in the pockets of large corporations based outside of the destination.

The typical international trip for U.S. travelers can leave as little as 10% of their travel dollars in the destination visited. The root of the problem with the industry is that this economic model perpetuates systemic issues, like low wages and poor working conditions.

When you travel with Elsewhere, you're helping fight this economic leakage by eating, staying and patronizing local businesses.

"At Elsewhere, we [prioritize] 'local' at every turn so your tourist dollars are returned back into communities, empowering them with access to long-term, locally based income," Bowen said.

"We thoroughly audit our entire supply chain, prioritizing proper wages and safe working conditions. We privilege women and other underrepresented members of society and ensure there is access to equal opportunities and career advancement."

How Elsewhere works

To get started with planning one of these authentic and meaningful travel experiences with Elsewhere, you begin by filling out an online trip request . This 10-question form is all it takes for Elsewhere to get started matching you with a local expert.

Once that connection is made, the next step is a Zoom call to get the planning kicked into high gear. From there the local expert will do all the heavy lifting to craft a personalized, one-of-a-kind trip for you.

Elsewhere traveler Kyle Smith described his experience working with one of the company's local experts to plan a trip to Italy like this:

We talked with Andrea [Gambino] a couple of times over a year ago and just told him about us and about what we like to do, and he took it from there and planned the most amazing trip. ... He was so knowledgeable and helpful. It made the trip that much better.

local travel operators

Another Elsewhere client, Jane Ellen Miller, wrote the following in a review of her trip to Costa Rica:

[F]rom zip lines, to hanging bridges, coffee to waterfalls, volcanos to sunset cruises aboard a catamaran, [our local expert Guillermo Aguilar] had us covered. This was our daughter's 6th birthday trip (she's been asking to see the Monteverde Cloud Forest for over a year … no, really) and [he] even gave her small gifts along the way.

When Elsewhere is involved, experiencing a trip of a lifetime can be very simple.

All you have to do is pick the location, then talk to one of Elsewhere's fabulous local experts. They will create an itinerary based on your preferences and then they will book everything for you — all through the Elsewhere platform .

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.

The all day Death Valley tour from Las Vegas was beautiful. But the best part was the guide, Joel, who shared his amazing knowledge base with us, was funny, and, best yet, had many interesting stories about history and particular individuals in Death Valley as well as Las Vegas. A magnificent day!

My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!
Judd was excellent, and very knowledgable, he was very prepared and i would recommend Intrepid to my friends and family

The tour was great, especially our guide Pasquale, who brought more flavour to all places we visited and did his best to show and teach us everything, meet everyone’s expectations and create a great atmosphere. Our driver Jacob also was very kind and supportive. Hotels had a good standard and necessary itinerary adaptions were on spot. In my point of view, the only shortfall was tour start and end (meeting/drop-off) points; which would work quite better starting and ending in a hotel, also offering pre and post tour accommodation for the ones arriving early or leaving late. Meeting points in public spaces when you have luggage is not comfortable and might cause problems to travellers. All the rest was great!
Thanks a lot. I had a very good 8 days from 22nd of Jan till 29th 2024 with your team and literally suggest your company to all. Your tour leaders were responsible, respectful, helpful, and supportive. Goodness bless you guys.

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

My first experience with an organized tour like this. Expense alone will limit future trips. Much more walking than my wife was prepared for. This alone reduced her enjoyment. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and thorough with his planning and execution. Andrew has a fun personality and very personable. One item that disappointed me was the shuttle from airport to resort at both ends of the
Insights Tours are always amazing and this one was no exception. Nice balance of free time to relax and experience Hawaii on your own with visits to places on the islands to experience the culture. It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)

From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

A hectic and fast paced trip, starting with early mornings. Loved Niagara Falls and being able to go to the Canadian side for one night (remember to apply for a Canadian Esta and bring your passport). Pennsylvania and Amish country side was a treat. Wish we had more time there. Love hearing about American history. Then Washington DC- amazing city. We disembarked after touring DC monuments and aeronautical museum and spent two more days in DC. Wharf, eateries, sights and monuments within reach.
Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.

The Top 10 Tour Operators in 2019

local travel operators

A great tour operator can turn a good vacation into an extraordinary one. Our readers’ favorites this year are experts in their fields, whether they’re arranging the perfect family safari in Zambia, a cycling tour in France, or cultural immersion in Japan. These companies were valued for their tailored itineraries and access to normally off-limits experiences, but their greatest value might be their ability to save travelers time — they’ll iron out the logistics that could take non-pros countless hours. To some, that’s a priceless benefit.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

Japan has long been a popular destination with readers, and last year, our editors selected it as Destination of the Year. InsideJapan Tours (No. 8) taps into parts of the country that are not as well known, and it provides super organized, step-by-step itineraries for both first-time visitors and those who return every year. “They provided a booklet for us to self-guide for ten days after a tour of Honshu Island. We haven’t stopped raving about the service of their office, and have spread the word to many,” wrote one reader. Another remarked that “InsideJapan made sure every step of my journey was amazing.”

“Excellent variety of trips and top-notch tour guides” is how one reader characterized this year’s winning tour operator. Among some of its globe-spanning expeditions is a cultural tour through Cuba that hits Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Havana – while meeting artists, horticulturalists, farmers, a Santeria priest, and cooks along the way. And there is a sporty journey through Puget Sound’s San Juan Islands for Kayaking (while getting up close to passing Orcas), hikes through rain forests, and soaks in natural hot springs. One reader summed it up by declaring Classic Journeys “could not have been better.”

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

sights g elektrostal

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

the main attractions of the electric steel

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

sights of electrostal

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.

Rates for Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Territories and Possessions are set by the Department of Defense .

Rates for foreign countries are set by the State Department .

2 Choose a date

Rates are available between 10/1/2021 and 09/30/2024.

The End Date of your trip can not occur before the Start Date.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

Lafayette beekeepers take great care of bees, local enviroment

M ar. 24—Noelle Northcutt and Kelly Schoeppler, owners and operators of Koelle Tiny Farms, moved to Lafayette two years ago to pursue their beekeeping hobby. For them the farm is not just about what they harvest, but how they can give back to the environment and their community.

Northcutt and Schoeppler, who have been together since 2011, moved to their farm in Lafayette from Aurora two years ago along with their two dogs Bodie and Zephyr. Previously, they took up beekeeping as a hobby but they were limited by their urban environment. So when they made the decision to expand their beekeeping hobby to a business, they knew more land was needed.

For them, the farm is a way to give back to their ecosystem by providing a habitat for their honey and local bees as well as a chance to connect with their community when selling honey at local markets.

Schoeppler said she checks in with the bees to ensure the hive is healthy and the queen is laying eggs, but she and Northcutt mostly just leave the bees to their own devices. They ensure the bees have more than adequate access to flowers and water.

The bees are left with 40-60 pounds of honey to get through the winter, but Schoeppler and Northcutt are able to harvest the surplus.

"The bees always know best and they'll tell us when (the honey) is ready," Schoeppler said.

Northcutt said that as bees dehydrate nectar down to approximately 18% water content, it becomes what humans call honey. As soon as the water content is right, the bees will cap each cell from their hive with wax, to preserve the honey.

Frames from the hive are taken out, the cells are uncapped to reveal the honey and the frames are placed in a centrifuge to get the honey out. The honey is strained to clear out any wax or debris, but their job is finished there.

Northcutt and Schoeppler have multiple beehive boxes for their bees, and they said each hive is unique. Some hives will produce just enough honey to get through the winter while other hives will supply a generous surplus of honey.

"Even though the bees live in the same environment, they still experience different stressors. So, not every hive behaves exactly the same way," Northcutt said.

The genetics of the queen bee also affects how the bees behave as well as the season the honey is harvested.

"Based on what flora is blooming at the time that (the bees) collected that nectar, made that honey, you'll get different flavors," Northcutt said.

Schoeppler said the flavor of the honey changes year to year, but they find they get a distinct spring flavor and fall flavor.

Schoeppler said farming and nature are often seen as being at odds with one another, but they wanted their farm to converge the two. She said the farm works to be good environmentalists while also being good honey harvesters.

Schoeppler and Northcutt ensure their property is a sanctuary for their honey bees, but also local bees and other pollinators.

Northcutt emphasized that their farm does not function under the assumption that bees are replaceable livestock, and they treat their bees with great respect and dignity. For them, hive loss is a significant event.

"If you can imagine being a tiny invertebrate and this giant human picking up your hive box and just setting it down thoughtlessly," Northcutt said, "It could potentially lead to a lot of animal loss."

They said they are not the fastest beekeepers in the world, and joked that they might actually be the slowest, but each action they take is done gently, with care and with the bees best interest at heart.

"Even the smallest insect has value. We don't want people to view insects as immediately replaceable," Northcutt said.
