Traveling beyond your province or territory protect yourself with travel insurance 9 ..

When your travels take you far from home in Canada, even a minor accident or sickness can become a major expense and a costly inconvenience—especially since the coverage you have may not fully protect you, whether that’s your provincial health plan, protection offered through your credit card or coverage through your employer.

Your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) typically covers only a limited portion of your medical expenses once you leave the country and your province. For example, a four-day stay in a U.S. hospital for an appendectomy could cost $39,400 (USD), with only $1,600 (CAD) covered by your GHIP. And a one-day stay in a U.S. hospital for a broken arm could cost $32,600 (USD), with only $400 (CAD) covered by your GHIP.

Coverage offered through your credit card 9 and employer, while valuable, may only cover specific scenarios and not offer the comprehensive protection you will want while you’re away from home.

Travel insurance can cover your entire family for the duration of your trip, and family pricing is generally available to help you save on the coverage you need. If you travel regularly, a multi-trip annual travel insurance plan that can offer protection for a full year, regardless of the number of times you travel, is a smart option to consider.

RBC Insurance – Travel Insurance that offers more coverage in more places ™ RBC Insurance offers the travel coverage you need, as well as 24/7 access to a caring team of medical professionals – no matter how big or small your emergency. Next Step: Tell us who is travelling so we can give you an accurate quote.

Who do you want to get a quote for?

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance covers you, your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote will calculate the coverage you already have on your card—saving you money!

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance does not cover travellers other than you (the cardholder), your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote for these travellers will not factor in your credit card coverage.

Tip: You will need to get a quote and buy travel insurance for other eligible travellers separately so that we can give you an accurate quote for everyone.

Travel insurance is a necessity when you are away from home . It guarantees your ability to access and pay for health care, if and when you need it. Beyond medical emergencies, travel insurance can also help with flight issues, lost luggage, and more.

Do not ask for a call back

Called twice on January 9th for a quote and to ask how to calculate the days that I needed as I have 31 days covered by my credit card with them. Waiting over 1h on hold to reach an agent only to be told I will get a call back in 24h. Called back the 19th at 19h14. And I'm considered a good client. 🙄

Worst insurance company ive ever had.

It's the worst insurance I've ever had. My flight was cancelled, and I had to book another flight. When I contacted them to ask for compensation, they asked me to send in documents. After three months, during my follow-up, they indicated that the documents had to be sent back. I sent them back, but after another three months, the person I spoke to on the phone finally said that the insurance doesn't cover flight cancellations. What do they cover????

Worst Coverage & Service Experience

RBC Avion Travel insurance changed and now provide 3rd party insurance coverage under Allianz Insurance and my experience in submitting delayed flight and delayed luggage has been horrible. I have been trying for over a year on a flight delay during the winter storm. The lack of Allianz support and communication has been horrendous on their claim submittal process. I Would not recommend RBC Avion Travel card nor their insurance!

Great value - as long as you never have to make a claim!

It's been 7 months since my medical incident, and 5 months since I submitted all receipts (the hospital took 2 months to send invoices - as Allianz (RBC's provider) would not pay hospital directly.). After no progress for months, I had an email today asking for a receipt that was previously submitted that was somehow misplace. Trying to get an update via phone (with long holding times) was useless. Claim was always in progress. . . Allianz is hugely understaffed.

I'll never buy RBC insurance again, as long as Allianz is the provider.

Do NOT buy this insurance!

As a long-time RBC customer, I thought I could have confidence in purchasing this insurance product. Boy, was I wrong! My case was so simple. I fell and struck my chest. After three days of considerable pain, I felt it best to go to ER and have it checked. A few questions, a simple chest xray and the doctor confirmed to fracture or concerns. No medication, nothing else required. Good - easy. Yes, it is Florida so the bill for that was $1,600. I have been fighting with this insurer for six months. Still they have not paid and continue to get threatening emails and calls from the medical provider. Folks, this can JEOPARDIZE YOUR CREDIT RATING. They take your money and then don't pay out their claims. I will also be formally filing a complaint with the Royal Bank. RBC, SHAME ON YOU FOR USING THEM AND EVEN ALLOWING YOUR LOGO TO APPEAR ON THEIR DOCUMENTATION. I will be closing my bank accounts @ RBC as well.

Worst customer experience I have ever encountered.

Everything said in all of the previous reviews are 100 per cent accurate. We have been dealing with Allianz for over 6 months now trying to resolve a $200 claim and had nothing but a run around. They even went as far as wanting proof of our RBC travel health purchase as the told us that they had nothing on record. Pathetic and RBC should be ashamed for even being associated with Allianz Global ASSISTANCE! Joke of a name.

Absolute worst!

Rest assured that you won’t be able to contact them, no one answers their phones. It doesn’t matter what time of day you call, they are “always experiencing high call volumes”. When you submit a claim, be prepared for them to ask you for the same documents over and over again. It’s been a month and I’m still waiting. It’s obvious they don’t want to pay even though they should as per their policy. They are clearly trying to frustrate me so I don’t keep asking for reimbursement. Shocking defeat the whole purpose of having insurance when you get zero benefits from them!

RBC travel insurance/ Allianz provide incredibly frustrating lack of service

You provide all documents to Allianz and wait...and wait...and wait. Months later they request the same information. For example, they request proof that there is no refund... The documents sent clearly say no refund. So we rescan the same documents and circle/highlight where it says no refunds. After multiple requests, resubmissions, and months of waiting, they move on to other requests like proof of prepaid airline tickets for our return flight. To take advantage of an employee discount we were flying standby however, our numerous canceled documents for our 5-week vacation (cut short to just 1 week because my wife fell, broke her arm, and needed surgery) cruise, etc were clearly dated after our flight home. And trying to phone Allianz is very frustrating... a recording either informs you they are too busy and call back OR you wait hours on hold. If I could rate them with a negative star, I would. I suggest you get your travel insurance elsewhere

Not able to reach them

It has been three days that I have been trying to contact them to get clarity with regard to the insurance coverage that we have. Spend hours waiting on hold to speak to no one. Very disappointed! Find someone else who will value your business.

Zero customer service

I bought travel insurance for my daughter but we never received a confirmation email. I have called 3 different toll-free numbers, waiting on hold for hours, and with one of them was able to leave a callback number - however, the callback was supposed to be 3 hours ago so I don't think I am going to hear from anyone. This is absolutely ridiculous.

You’ve packed your bags, mapped your itinerary, and set your “out of office” message – it’s vacation time! But what about travel insurance?

According to a 2019 study by the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada, 13% of Canadians aren’t sure if they have travel insurance before they go on vacation. Of those who have bought insurance, 17% don’t know what their policy covers.

As a professional travel writer, I find this rather alarming. Canadian health insurance is not valid outside Canada, and your provincial or territorial health plan may not cover all the costs even if you’re travelling domestically. If you suffer an accident or get sick abroad, unexpected medical bills can bankrupt you. It’s why the Canadian government  advises all travellers to buy travel insurance , and I never leave the country without it. Whether you’re taking a two-week trip or a gap year abroad, every one needs the best travel insurance in Canada, regardless of age, health status, destination, or length of vacation.

World Nomads: Best for thrill seekers

Designed for adrenaline lovers with wanderlust, World Nomads insures a long list of adventure sports, activities and volunteer/work experiences, as well as sporting equipment delay/loss/theft. You also get access to a 24/7 hotline that provides information that adventure travellers may need: weather reports and travel advisories, assistance locating the nearest trail, and finding a gear shop.

World Nomads

The standard policy covers emergency medical expenses up to $5 million, emergency dental, trip cancellation/interruption/delay, baggage delays/theft/damage, and more. The downside: you must be under 66 years of age to qualify.

CAA Travel Insurance: Best for families

A long-trusted Canadian institution, CAA travel Insurance offers flexible travel plans to suit every type of traveller and vacation, but their policies are particularly great for families. Their stand-alone emergency medical policy of up to $5 million in health coverage is extremely comprehensive, even including medical repatriation, emergency dental, and reimbursements for pet care and kenneling.

CAA

The Vacation Package Plan provides full cancellation/interruption insurance – ideal for prepaid, all-inclusive vacation packages – as well as family transportation and escort of children during emergencies. Anyone can buy CAA travel insurance, but members get a 10% discount.

CAA’s emergency medical plans also now include coverage for COVID-19-related illnesses for vaccinated customers. Coverage is up to $2.5 million if partially vaccinated and up to $5 million if fully vaccinated.

Blue Cross: Best for seniors and retirees

Blue Cross has been around for more than 70 years, and 1 in 4 Canadians utilize its travel insurance. Blue Cross’s emergency medical covers up to $5 million. It has special “snowbird” travel insurance packages designed for Canadians who head to warmer climates each year, making Blue Cross ideal for retirees.

Blue Cross

Part of the package is the recently launched Serenity Service. This free perk provides a range of benefits if your flight is delayed, including access to an airport lounge or even a hotel room (depending on the length of the delay). Pre-existing conditions are generally not covered.

Travel CUTS Bon Voyage Insurance: Best for budget travellers

Starting at only $1.36 a day, Travel CUTS Bon Voyage Insurance offers very affordable travel insurance packages, and it’s personally been my “go-to” travel policy for years. Yes, it’s geared toward students (e.g., you can swap your travel dates at no charge due to an exam schedule conflict), but anyone between 15 and 50 years of age can purchase a policy.

Travel CUTS

The standard package includes hospital and medical up to $1 million, dental care, air ambulance evacuation, flight accident, accidental death or dismemberment, and trip interruption/cancellation insurance. Adventure and extreme sports are also covered.

Manulife CoverMe: Best for Canadians with pre-existing medical conditions

Manulife CoverMe offers highly comprehensive Canadian travel insurance packages for those travelling as a family, a visitor to Canada, or a student. You also get access to the TravelAid mobile app, which provides directions to the nearest medical facility and local emergency telephone numbers.

<a href="https://www.coverme.com/travel-insurance.html?province=ON&agecode=0" target="_blank">Manulife CoverMe</a>

However, the stand-out feature is arguably TravelEase – a special policy designed to cover fully disclosed medical conditions. For travellers with pre-existing conditions, it insures a bunch of expenses for health services and transportation. It provides up to $10 million in emergency medical benefits – a unicorn in the travel insurance world.

Medipac Travel Insurance: Best for emergency medical assistance

Medipac is one of the only travel insurance companies out there that is staffed by their own team of trained medical professionals, via their Medipac Assistance hotline. Medipac’s medical professionals are your first point of contact in an emergency medical situation. This service is also helpful for dealing with foreign medical systems and helping to prevent unnecessary expenses when dealing with a large deductible.

Medipac Travel Insurance

Medipac offers several competitive features for their travel insurance plans, including no age limits, a claim-free discount, and a 90-day stability period for most pre-existing conditions. If your pre-existing medical condition isn’t covered by a standard Medipac insurance plan, Medipac also offers personalized, underwritten insurance policies to help you meet your needs.

Medipac is offering a 5% Vaccine Discount to clients who have received a minimum of one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, as well as the new MedipacMAX option. This COVID insurance option provides maximum coverage of up to $5 million USD for COVID-19, in addition to its other benefits.

Allianz Travel Insurance: Best for frequent travellers

Touted as a world leader in the Canadian travel insurance and assistance industry, Allianz Travel Insurance is a major provider of travel insurance, corporate assistance, and concierge services. It seeks to help its customers find solutions to various travel-related problems. Allianz Travel has partnered with many reputable companies, including travel agencies, airlines, resorts, websites, event ticket brokers, corporations, universities, and credit card companies.

<a href="https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/" target="_blank">Allianz Travel Insurance</a>

Allianz Travel Insurance is a great choice for anyone looking for travel insurance. Its single-trip plans are perfect for those leaving home and visiting another destination (or destinations) before going back home. Its parent company, Allianz Global Assistance, has five plans to choose from, all offering different levels of protection and coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance’s annual/multi-trip plans are perfect for both personal and professional travelers who take multiple trips in a year. It offers four distinct options to choose from.

No! If you get sick or injured overseas, the Canadian government will not cough up a dime to cover your medical costs. Here are the sobering facts:

  • Canadian public health insurance is not valid outside of Canada.
  • Foreign hospitals can be extremely expensive and may demand payment before treating you.
  • The Canadian government will not pay a Canadian’s medical bills for an illness or accident suffered abroad. You’re on the hook for footing the bill!

Will my provincial insurance work in another province/territory?

Flash your valid provincial health card in another part of Canada, and you’ll likely be covered for some of the same services insured by your home provincial plan. This is because the provinces and territories (except Quebec) signed an agreement whereby the host province foots the bill for any medically necessary health care services and gets reimbursed by the home province later.

However, that doesn’t mean you’re completely out of the woods. Depending on your destination, a slew of other services may not be covered, such as an ambulance, hospital transfer, prescription drugs, transportation back to your home province, and procedures not currently approved by your home plan.

Plus, since Quebec wasn’t a signatory to the interprovincial billing agreement, you’ll likely be charged for any medical bills incurred there. For this reason, it’s recommended that you buy extra travel insurance (or verify your  credit card’s travel insurance coverage ) to cover any uninsured health care services that may crop up during your trip.

What does the best travel insurance in Canada cover?

Every travel insurance policy is different and what’s covered depends on how much you’re willing to pay for coverage. Typical medical services that you can expect to be covered include:

  • Emergency hospital and medical costs
  • Ambulance and air ambulance costs
  • Outpatient services
  • Physician and laboratory costs
  • Prescription drugs
  • Direct payment to the hospitals and doctors caring for you
  • Assistance with bringing a family member to your bedside
  • Air ambulance or commercial repatriation home
  • Return of your vehicle if you are ill and have to come home

Additional benefits may include:

  • Trip cancellation for non-refundable monetary losses
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage loss, rental car damage, out-of-pocket expenses
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

How much coverage do I need?

Securing a policy with a minimum of $1M maximum payable is a safe bet. But don’t just look at the numbers when choosing a policy – read the fine print. Every insurer has a list of situations in which coverage is not provided, otherwise known as “exclusions.” Check whether your provider includes coverage or has provisions for the following:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions: According to the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers, a pre-existing condition is “something that happened (or started to happen) before you were insured.” Some policies may cover claims relating to pre-existing conditions that are “stable and controlled,” but read the definitions carefully. If you don’t declare a condition, the entire policy could be invalidated!
  • Medical evacuation: Ensure the policy covers medical evacuation to the nearest hospital and/or to Canada and the costs of a medical escort to accompany you to your final destination.
  • Repatriation in case of death: On the grim side, ensure that your plan covers the preparation and return of your remains to Canada.
  • Adventurous Activities: If you plan on engaging in “high-risk” activities on your trip, you may need to shell out extra dough for a more comprehensive plan. Many policies don’t cover “risky” activities, such as skiing or snowboarding “out of bounds,” skydiving, scuba diving, white-water rafting, mountaineering, or participation in any rodeo activity. To cover your bases, ask questions and get specifics before purchasing a policy.

You may have to pay more to have these things included, but a few extra bucks may be worth it for peace of mind.

Should I buy “a la carte” travel insurance or get a travel credit card with free insurance?

A credit card with travel insurance is always a good thing to carry in your wallet. The  best travel credit cards in Canada  usually cover everything from emergency medical costs to trip cancellation/interruption to flight delay to rental car insurance, which could save you a wad of cash.

The  Scotiabank Gold American Express ® Card  has saved my butt a few times, and I’ve filed several travel-related claims through my card. I cancelled my trip to Portugal a few years ago due to a death in the family, and I got a full refund on my hotel deposit and flights for myself, my husband, and my baby. It totally justified the $120 annual fee.

That being said, don’t rely on your credit card to take care of all your travel insurance needs. It usually includes a basic policy, meaning it offers low (or no!) travel medical insurance as part of the package. Like any travel insurance company policy, you’ve really got to read the fine print and understand the conditions of your policy to avoid sticky situations.

For instance, the Scotiabank Gold American Express ® Card requires a cardholder to have charged at least 75% of trip expenses to make a trip cancellation/interruption insurance claim. So if you book an all-inclusive vacation for $5,000 and then cancel due to illness, at least $3,750 must have been charged onto your AMEX to qualify for a claim. If you didn’t do that, you’re out of luck.

Can I still purchase insurance if i’ve already started my vacation?

The short answer: most insurance providers won’t cover you after your departure date. However, a handful of insurers (such as World Nomads) will allow you to purchase a policy while already overseas. Just know that it can come with sky-high costs and/or conditions: World Nomads has a 48-hour waiting period before coverage kicks in. The bottom line? It’s always best to buy travel insurance before leaving the country.

Can I get travel insurance for part of a trip?

Some plans offer insurance coverage options that will allow you to customize your coverage, but you’ll have to research to find one that works for your unique circumstances. Alternatively, you could take out an insurance policy for each destination and/or segment of your trip.

For instance, you could get a World Nomads policy for the two weeks you’re scuba diving in Australia, followed by a basic Travel CUTS Bon Voyage insurance to cover a month-long trip to Europe. However, when you buy Canadian travel insurance, you must select a trip start and end date – meaning you must know the exact dates for travelling to those places.

Should I carry a printout of my policy with me at all times?

I recommend carrying the travel insurance card in your wallet and locking it up in the hotel safe with other important travel documents like my passport. But don’t rely totally on paper: Wallets get lost or stolen, luggage can be delayed or M.I.A., and papers are easy to misplace when you’re on the road. My advice is to send a copy of the policy to your email and save it on your iCloud or another storage system that can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

Trawick International Travel Insurance  is another medically robust insurance provider that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance  offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex American plan is meant for trips limited to the US, but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the US for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about the financial aspect of receiving medical care while traveling , even in the most remote corners of the globe.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away.

Choosing Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with preexisting conditions, so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose The Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award 5 stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2022 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the US Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

The State Department poured a bucket of cold water on spring break 2024 when it recently issued warnings for several popular spring destinations.

It also got everyone to start thinking about travel insurance, which could protect you if something goes wrong on your trip.

"Spring breakers tend to see the world through rose-tinted glasses," says Weronika Popiolek, a spokeswoman for Insured Nomads . "Their excursions are fueled by adrenaline—and the last thing on their minds is the fine print of an insurance policy. That can be a costly mistake."

The government advisories are an important wake-up call, say experts. This year, the traditional March and April getaways are a truly global event, according to Tim Dodge, vice president of marketing at Arch RoamRight .

"We're seeing a higher volume of travel with top international destinations including Europe—specifically Greece, Italy, U.K., France, Spain and Portugal, as well as Mexico, the Caribbean, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, and South America," he says. "Cruises with multiple destinations are also quickly growing in popularity."

In other words, travelers are going everywhere—and anything can happen. But is spring break travel dangerous this year? How is it different from past years? And when do you need insurance?

Let's find out.

Travel is risky, particularly during the 2024 spring break season.

Is Spring Break 2024 Dangerous?

In a sense, spring break has never been entirely safe, at least when compared to other types of vacations. No matter where you go, people tend to get a little raucous.

“Asking a security professional where to go for spring break is like asking a doctor what cigarette is safe to smoke,” says Harding Bush, associate director for security operations at Global Rescue , a provider of security and travel risk management services. “Spring break is the perfect storm of a high-risk age group, international travel, crime, alcohol and predators."

But this year it feels a little different. Among the recent warnings:

  • Ecuador got hit with a State Department advisory because of the risk of civil unrest, crime, and kidnapping. That could be an issue if you have a Galápagos cruise or are headed to Quito.
  • The government also warned Americans to avoid the Bahamas , where violent crimes , such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in tourist areas. Nassau is a popular stop for cruise ships this spring break.
  • And the U.S. urged Americans to reconsider traveling to Jamaica , where it noted the homicide rate is highest in the Western Hemisphere. Jamaica is home to some of the most famous all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean.

"Many travelers are under the belief that tourist areas are protected and safe," says Joan Rupar, area senior vice president at Gallagher , an insurance brokerage and risk management firm. "Vacation deals promoting all-inclusive experiences look exciting and risk-free."

But that’s not necessarily true, she says.

You should be thinking of protecting yourself—and travel insurance is one way to do that.

Spring break is different this year. Here's how.

How Is The 2024 Spring Break Season Different?

Experts say it's not just the travel warnings that set spring break 2024 apart. There are other distinguishing features.

It's crowded. "The 2024 spring break season is witnessing an unprecedented resurgence in travel, surpassing pre-COVID levels for the first time," says Deanna Caffrey, director of Redpoint Resolutions . Many industry watchers are worried that the influx of travelers could lead to overcrowded destinations and the potential for increased travel delays.

It's expensive. "The biggest difference facing spring break travelers this year is cost," says Stan Sandberg, co-founder of travel insurance site TravelInsurance.com . He says airfare and accommodation costs continue to rise this year. Based on a recent study of TravelInsurance.com's customers, the overall spring break trip cost this year is 12% higher than last year. And the average cost per person per day is up almost 15% over last year's spring break. Sandberg says with the rising costs of travel, it's even more important to consider trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, which can reimburse your nonrefundable trip costs when unexpected travel hazards disrupt your trip.

It's unpredictable. It's an El Niño year, which means the weather will be a little wacky. You could get freak snowstorms on the East Coast or rain in the Caribbean and Mexico, which could potentially affect your spring trip. "Some meteorologists are predicting cool and possibly stormy weather in popular spring break regions this year," says James Nuttall, general manager of Insubuy . He adds that it's important to remember that unless you purchase "cancel for any reason" travel insurance, deciding to stay home because of bad weather is not a valid reason for trip cancellation.

It could be prone to delays. That's especially true if you're flying. Airlines are not quite out of the woods when it comes to some of the operational challenges during the pandemic, say travel insurance experts. "While airlines addressed some of these travel challenges in 2022, there still are staffing shortages that may be exacerbated by increased volumes of travelers during spring break 2024," says Scott Adamski, head of global product development at AIG Travel.

So there's really something for everyone this spring break, says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA .

“Spring break travel provides the opportunity to experience both big crowds and inclement weather,” he says.

You may need insurance if you are traveling this spring.

Do You Need Insurance For Your 2024 Spring Break Vacation?

I asked Beth Godlin, president of Aon Affinity Travel Practice , how how to decide if you need travel insurance this spring break. She recommends keeping three things in mind.

1. Can you afford to lose the value of your vacation?

"Check your flight, cruise or tour cancellation policies and determine what money you’re comfortable with losing if you had to cancel at the last minute," says Godlin.

2. What kind of protection do you need at your destination?

For example, if you’re on a motorcycle tour on a desert island and need a medical evacuation, travel protection may be especially valuable to you.

3. What kind of problems are you likely to encounter?

"If your family travels often, you know that delays are common due to things like weather events and mechanical issues," she says. "For this reason, I suggest finding a travel protection plan that includes trip delay benefits that can help offset additional costs due to a delay, including meals, lodging or transportation."

What else should a good spring break travel insurance policy include? Look for one with supplemental medical benefits if you’re traveling internationally. Medical coverage for international travel can vary. Most domestic health insurance plans provide partial or no coverage while traveling overseas.

"If your family is adventurous and you find yourself cliff jumping, mountain climbing, jet skiing or ziplining, be sure to check for any exclusions related to those activities in your travel protection," she adds.

You can still buy travel insurance for your 2024 spring break vacation.

Can You Still Buy Travel Insurance For Spring Break Now?

Yes, you can.

"It is definitely not too late to get travel insurance for spring break," says Bailey Foster, vice president of trip insurance at Trawick International . "In fact, a travel insurance plan can be purchased up until the day before you depart so you have coverage while you are traveling."

Some restrictions may apply. For example, your policy may not cover a pre-existing medical condition if you purchase it closer to departure. But all of the essential protections will still be there.

What's the time limit to get all the coverage? It depends. If you have a Travel Guard policy, for example, you must purchase your insurance plan within 15 days of making your initial deposit on your trip. If you do, then a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver may be included in your travel insurance plan.

What Are The Best Spring Break Travel Insurance Policies?

That really depends on where you're going and what you need.

  • If you're traveling somewhere with your family, you might want to consider travel insurance like Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s (BHTP) ExactCare policy . It's a comprehensive policy that covers two children aged 17 and under for each adult on the policy. ExactCare also covers nonrefundable vacation rentals and theme park deposits, in addition to traditional vacation expenses such as flights and hotel or resort deposits, if the family must cancel its spring break vacation for a covered reason.
  • A plan like Trawick International's Safe Travels Protect will cover trip cancellation, travel delay, baggage delay, and emergency medical. If you're traveling with kids, Safe Travels Protect even offers even lower rates for children under age 18.
  • Redpoint Travel Protection has policies that cover trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and travel delays. But if you have a taste for adventure, you might also want to check out its comprehensive Ripcord plans , which offer everything from $100,000 of primary medical expense coverage to political, security and natural disaster evacuation.
  • You may be able to get high-risk spring break activities included in your policy. There's a misconception that you need a policy add-on for many regular sports. Before paying for supplemental coverage, check your policy. For example, Faye Travel Insurance includes activities such as kitesurfing, boating, wakeboarding, regular skiing and regular snowboarding in its base policies.

If there's one thing travel insurance experts agree on, it's that you need to make sure you have adequate medical coverage. That's especially true for international trips, where your health insurance is unlikely to work. Even if you're in excellent health, accidents happen.

"During spring break, in particular, we often hear stories about college students traveling internationally with a group of friends and ending up in the hospital with a broken arm, and needing to pay out of pocket for the medical bills," says Joe Cronin, CEO of International Citizens Insurance .

Cronin says many international travelers assume travel medical insurance is expensive. But it can cost as little as $1 a day and can prevent a financial disaster if you end up in the hospital during your trip.

And while we're on the topic of medical coverage, don't forget medical evacuation. If you’re going somewhere with poor or no hospital facilities, you might want to consider an air medical transport membership like Medjet.

"Insurance medevac only gets you to the nearest acceptable hospital," says Laura Heidt, insurance desk manager at Brownell Travel . And if you need a non-medically necessary transfer, you could spend anywhere from $45,000 to $200,000 on medical transportation.

So be sure to research and buy the appropriate insurance coverage for your trip, because you don't want to go on spring break—and end up spring broke.

Does travel insurance cover family members?

Generally, you can insure your whole family on one travel insurance plan, so you won't have to buy separate plans for every traveler. Your travel insurance plan will cover every person listed on the policy.

Does travel insurance cover cancellation due to a death in the family?

In many cases, travel insurance can help you recoup the cost of your vacation if you have to cancel due to a death in your family. However, you'll want to carefully read your policy's definition of a family member, as not everyone in your life could be included.

Bottom line

A family vacation can be a big investment, so it's important to protect yourself in case anything goes awry. Having a travel insurance plan that's easy to access, provides 24/7 support and fits your specific travel concerns and budget can help ensure your trip will go smoothly.

Our methodology

To determine the best travel insurance companies, CNBC Select analyzed dozens of travel insurance companies and compared them based on various factors.

While narrowing down the best travel insurance companies, we focused on the number of plans available, the availability of 24/7 assistance to access while traveling, coverage for Covid-19, the availability of cancel for any reason coverage, and financial strength (which measures a company's ability to pay on contracts) using A.M. Best ratings. We also considered family-friendly features, such as the inclusion of children on policies for free with parent's coverage, and reasons for cancellation, including school year extension as a reason for cancellation.

Note that the premiums and policy structures advertised for travel insurance companies are subject to fluctuate in accordance with the company's policies.

How the 2024 RBC Heritage is a familiar scene with a different ‘signature’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The countdown to the 2024 RBC Heritage dropped below 50 days last week, creating a sense of urgency for tournament officials to assure a smooth operation for the PGA Tour’s annual April visit to the Palmetto State.

That’s business as usual.

Bleachers are already overlooking on parts of the Harbour Town Golf Links. Markings to place the hospitality suites dot the area around some greens. Paint just off fairways provides direction for electrical and television cables.

The scene is familiar.

The wonderful Pete Dye-designed course is still a demanding challenge that requires precision over power for the game’s elite players. And the sponsors with names on the title, the Royal Bank of Canada and Boeing, remain on board.

Yet, the 56th edition of the Heritage (April 18-21) will be different.

With the combination of the COVID outbreak in 2020 and the turbulence created by the emergence of LIV golf to challenge the PGA Tour for supremacy in the pro game at the highest level, change became inevitable.

This year’s tournament wears a “signature” tag, which translates into a field of only 70 or so golfers playing in a no-cut event for shares of a $20 million purse.

“We’ll have the best competing against the best on a great golf course,” longtime tournament director Steve Wilmot said.

“The best” includes household names: Rory McIlroy, Scott Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas , Ricky Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Victor Hovland and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick, among others.

Those names on the tee sheet put the Heritage in the top tier of Tour events.

Yet, getting to this point has been a logistical nightmare for tournament officials. Remember, the pandemic forced cancellation of the 2020 Heritage in March. Then, tournament emerged with a June date — with no spectators allowed.

The 2021 Heritage unfolded with limited fans, and normalcy seemed to be the theme in 2022.

To borrow announcer Lee Corso’s signature line: “Not so fast!”

Along came LIV, and the PGA Tour went into scramble mode.

By October 2022, officials announced the 2023 Heritage would be a “designated” event, which meant the stars would be playing for $20 million, but the field would be stretched into the 150-player range.

“We didn’t have time to change much,” Wilmot recalled. “In fact, we had to add 18 players, which meant more housing and courtesy cars and parking places — all the other things for the players, their families and caddies.”

Now, the field will be 70 or so, and the no-cut provision assures the stars will be around to play the weekend.

“We will have 50 to 60 fewer players, families, caddies and entourages, and that will make everything more manageable,” Wilmot said.

In turn, the fewer players will enhance the experience for fans, he said, “and that’s something we’re always striving to improve.”

Still, there are challenges.

The refined format limits sponsors’ exemptions to four, and some players who are RBC “ambassadors” have not qualified. Plus, Wilmot said, “There are players who have been great supporters of the tournament through the years, guys like Webb Simpson and Kevin Kisner, are not in the field yet.”

No matter which players receive the exemptions, “we’ll have the best field ever,” Wilmot said, “and we’ll provide a great experience for the fans.”

One of the tournament’s most compelling points is its list of winners, starting with Arnold Palmer in 1969. Jack Nicklaus would win and so would Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Davis Love and Payne Stewart to provide a who’s who of champions.

Jordan Spieth joined that select company in 2022 and Matt Fitzpatrick earned the champion’s plaid coat a year ago.

Big name winners. That’s not different; that’s business as usual at the Heritage.

Chip shots . Save the date: The South Carolina Golf Ball, a fund-raiser for the South Carolina Junior Golf Association Foundation, coincides with the opening round of the Masters, April 11, and is set for 6:30-9:30 p.m. at USC’s Pastides Alumni Center. ... Casey Kosney (Spartanburg) led the boys’ division and Ella Kate Barnett (Galivants Ferry) won the girls’ title in the SCJGA’s Morgan Lucas Championship at Greenville CC.

Boeing Co. is interested in buying supplier Spirit AeroSystems, which is at the center of several of the recent quality problems at the aerospace and defense company, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the negotiations.

Spirit AeroSystems SPR, +14.99% did not immediately return a request for comment about a potential deal. Boeing BA, -1.16% said it doesn’t have “anything to add.”

Shares of Spirit Aero jumped 16% in midday trading Friday. According to the report, Spirit, headquartered in Wichita, Kan., has hired bankers to explore options.

Spirit AeroSystems made the fuselage involved in the Alaska Airlines mid-air panel blowout last month.

A preliminary report earlier this month found that bolts were missing. Aviation regulators this week gave Boeing 90 days to come up with plan to improve safety and quality problems .

Additional measures are likely to be required as part of the safety review, RBC analyst Ken Herbert said in a note earlier this week.

The implications for Boeing are likely lower first half of 2024 deliveries, Herbert said. Through Thursday, Boeing and European rival Airbus AIR, -0.20% have made 23 and 32 aircraft deliveries, respectively, the analyst said.

Last year, Boeing and Spirit disclosed a few problems involving the 737 Max jets, which slowed production.

In the last 12 months, shares of Boeing fell 1.8% and shares of Spirit AeroSystems dropped 4.5%. That contrasts with gains of around 30% for the S&P 500 index SPX in the same timeframe.

Our goal is to make affordable travel insurance coverage available to as many Canadians as possible. In general, any Canadian resident can purchase some form of coverage with us. Factors such as where you are travelling, your health and the length of your trip may affect the specific coverage(s) available to you.

Note : Non-residents travelling to Canada, immigrants to Canada or foreign students studying in Canada may be eligible to purchase one of our Visitors to Canada Plans.

Generally speaking, no. While your age can affect your eligibility for certain coverages, we have packages and plans that cover all age groups. If you are age 65 or older, we may ask you to answer a few questions about your health to make sure you have the most appropriate coverage.

Yes, you may purchase a policy for your parents. Simply call us at 1-866-896-8172 , buy online , or visit an RBC Insurance Store . Depending on their age, they may be required to complete health questions in order to obtain coverage. If this is not a requirement, please keep in mind that all terms and conditions apply to your parents, therefore we recommend that you review the insurance with them prior to purchase.

Possibly. Depending on your age, medical condition and, if applicable, your answers to our health questions, pre-existing medical conditions are covered if they are stable for a certain time period (as specified in your policy) before your policy's effective date.

Note: Please refer to the policy document for complete coverage details regarding pre-existing conditions.

Your answers to the health questions (if applicable) will be used to help determine the benefits you are eligible to receive under your insurance policy.

When answering the health questions:

  • Take your time. The questions may take up to 10 minutes to complete.
  • You (the applicant) should complete and sign the Medical Questionnaire. (If you have someone else complete the Medical Questionnaire on your behalf, it is still your responsibility to make sure the answers to the questions are correct.)
  • Read and answer each question carefully and accurately. Review your answers to confirm they are correct. Incorrect answers may lead to your coverage being voided or your claim denied.
  • Have your prescriptions or a description of your medications nearby for reference.
  • If you are unsure about any questions regarding your medical condition or medications, please speak to your physician.

If necessary, a family member or close friend can complete the questions on your behalf. Please keep in mind, however, that it is still your responsibility to sign the form and make sure the answers are correct.

Yes, it is recommended that you buy coverage for your spouse as well.

This answer depends largely on your child's age.

  • If your child is under 2 years old and you are purchasing the Deluxe Package or a TravelCare ® Package, then your child receives emergency medical coverage at no extra cost.
  • If your child is 2 or older , you'll need to purchase emergency medical coverage for him or her.
  • No matter how old your child is , if you've purchased an airline ticket or made a separate trip deposit for him or her, consider buying a travel insurance package or trip cancellation and interruption insurance .

The right coverage for your trip depends on several factors, including (but not limited to) where you're travelling to, how long you’ll be gone, the kind of transportation you'll be using and, in some instances, your overall health. View all of our travel insurance products now.

An accident, illness or medical emergency can happen anywhere, anytime. If you need medical care or treatment in another country, your government health plan may cover only a portion of the costs. Travel insurance starts where these plans leave off.

Plus, with our emergency medical coverage, you have access to the multilingual representatives of Allianz Global Assistance.

Yes, if you are travelling outside your home province or territory. There are several reasons why it's important to get travel medical insurance when you're travelling within Canada. One reason is that accidents can happen anywhere. Another is that government health insurance plans do have limits on reimbursement of emergency medical expenses incurred while you are in another province. For example, the ambulance, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered by some government health insurance plans.

You may extend your coverage if you extend your trip, subject to certain conditions of your policy.

If you've purchased a single trip plan, the following conditions apply:

  • If you have not had a medical condition during your trip or while covered under your policy, you can request an extension by contacting us at 1-866-896-8172 before your original policy’s expiry date.
  • If you have had a medical condition during your trip and while covered under your policy, you must request the extension by contacting Allianz Global Assistance before the expiry date of your original policy. Your extension is subject to the approval of Allianz Global Assistance.
  • You must pay the required additional premium before your original policy’s expiry date.
  • If we are unable to extend your particular policy's coverage due to the trip duration limits of your policy, you may be able to purchase a new policy from us.

If you've purchased a multi-trip annual plan, the following conditions apply:

You may purchase a top-up policy for the additional number of days beyond the duration covered by your multi-trip annual plan as follows:

  • Before your effective date, you may contact us at 1-866-896-8172 to purchase top-up coverage.
  • After your effective date and if you have not had a medical condition during your trip, you must contact us at 1-866-896-8172 before your original policy’s expiry date to purchase top-up coverage.
  • After your effective date and if you have had a medical condition during your trip, you must contact Allianz Global Assistance before your original policy’s expiry date to request approval for and to purchase top-up coverage.
  • The terms, conditions and exclusions of the new top-up policy apply to you.
  • You must pay the required top-up premium on or before the effective date of the top-up period.

If you do NOT top-up your coverage for a trip, you will not be covered for any claims you make outside the period of insurance for that trip. If the top-up policy you are purchasing requires you to complete health questions, you must complete the health questions.

Please see the policy documents for complete coverage details regarding trip extensions.

It may, but not always. We recommend that you carefully review the travel insurance coverage provided by your credit card, as well as any special conditions or stipulations.

Do you have an RBC Royal Bank ® credit card?

To review the travel insurance coverage that comes with your RBC Royal Bank credit card, visit: www.rbcroyalbank.com/cards/documentation/index.html and click the "Insurance Certificate" link for your card.

We recommend that you carefully review your government health plan coverage. Government plans may not cover all emergency medical expenses once you leave your home province/territory and typically cover only a limited portion once you leave the country. In fact, the Canadian Government (Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada) urges Canadians to purchase supplemental health insurance when leaving the country. They say:

Do not rely on your provincial or territorial health plan to cover costs if you get sick or are injured while abroad. Out-of-country health care can be costly, and your health plan may not cover any medical expenses abroad. It is your responsibility to seek information from your provincial or territorial health authority and to obtain supplementary travel insurance and understand the terms of your policy. 2

Plus, government health insurance plans don't guarantee coverage for special care (air ambulance or emergency dental services, for instance).

Unlike government health insurance plans, our insurance offers you:

  • Unlimited coverage for eligible medical expenses 1
  • Up-front payment of eligible medical expenses whenever possible
  • 24-hour, multilingual emergency medical assistance—one toll-free phone call puts you in touch with a multilingual professional who will refer you to a local doctor or facility in order for you to receive the care you need

Government health insurance plans also don't provide coverage for situations such as lost, damaged or delayed baggage or trip cancellation and interruption. Our travel insurance can provide these coverages and more.

Yes, you do need travel insurance to protect yourself against the unexpected, even if you are going to the United States for a few days. An illness or accident can happen at any time, whether you're on the road for a few days, or a few months. And remember, the cost of health care is very expensive in the United States and very little of this cost would be covered by your government health insurance plan, credit card or company benefits plan. For a short trip, the cost of travel insurance is minimal, and it gives you the protection you need.

If you purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance, it will help pay for your expenses to return home in the event of a covered emergency. There are a number of circumstances that qualify as an emergency (for example, the death or serious illness of a family member). The cost of cancelling a trip prior to departure can be very expensive, as most trips are non-refundable and/or non-transferable, especially if you have to cancel just before leaving on your trip. Having to return early from a trip can also be very expensive. Either way, trip cancellation and interruption insurance is very important to protect your travel investment.

You must purchase coverage before departing on your trip. You may benefit from purchasing coverage as soon as you make your initial trip deposit, especially if you are purchasing trip cancellation and interruption insurance —either as stand-alone coverage or as part of one of our insurance packages .

If you were to book your trip 6 months in advance, consider the unexpected situations that could occur in that time.

If you purchase travel insurance from RBC Insurance, we will pay the eligible bills directly to the hospital or physician whenever possible.

There are a number of sports that are not covered during your trip. For more details, see the Exclusions section of the individual policy document.

You may purchase a top-up policy for the extra number of days beyond the duration covered by your multi-trip annual plan. Here are the conditions:

  • After your effective date and if you have had a medical condition during your trip, you must contact Allianz Global Assistance before your original policy’s expiry date to request approval for and purchase top-up coverage.

Please see the policy document for complete coverage details regarding top-up coverage.

If you purchase one of our travel medical insurance plans—either Classic Medical or TravelCare ® Medical—you can, subject to certain conditions:

  • If you are travelling for more than 183 days, you may purchase single trip coverage for up to 365 days provided that you are covered under your government health plan for the full duration of your trip.
  • If you are 40-74 years of age , you must also answer a few health questions, which will determine whether you are eligible to purchase coverage for trips beyond 183 days.

Yes, if you are travelling with your spouse/partner and children or other family members, you could save money with our family plan pricing.

The cost of a trip can be a significant financial investment. A lot can also happen in the time between booking your trip and departing—if a medical emergency or other unexpected event prevents you from going on your trip, you could potentially lose some (or possibly all) of the money you paid.

With trip cancellation and interruption insurance, you're protected when certain situations prevent you from travelling as planned. Examples include:

  • You can't travel due to an illness, job loss or immediate family member's medical emergency
  • You need to return home earlier than scheduled because of a family emergency or medical condition

Note : We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance at the time you pay your initial travel deposit. Please see the policy document for complete coverage details, including terms and conditions.

Yes! Tell them about our Visitors to Canada Plans , which offer affordable emergency medical protection to visitors, immigrants, foreign students and Canadians without government health plan coverage.

We strongly recommend you do. Your insurance policy is a valuable source of information and contains provisions that may limit or exclude coverage. Please read it before you go, keep it in a safe place and carry it with you when you travel.

RBC Insurance has appointed AZGA Service Canada Inc. (operating as “Allianz Global Assistance”) as the provider of all assistance and claims.

Whether you have a new claim or questions about an existing claim, representatives will work with you to make things as easy as possible. Visit the Travel Insurance Claims page for more details about how to submit a claim.

It's our goal to settle every claim as quickly as possible. While every claim is different, there are things you can do to speed things up:

  • If you require emergency care on your trip , call our emergency contact number immediately, or at the earliest possible opportunity (someone else can call if you're unable to). If you do not, your coverage may be limited and your benefits could be reduced.
  • If you need to cancel your trip prior to departing , call your travel agency, airline, tour company or the carrier immediately to cancel your trip no later than one business day after the cause of cancellation. Call Allianz Global Assistance the same day.
  • For all claims , carefully read the instructions for submitting your claim. Make sure you fully complete any required claims forms and submit all required documentation at your earliest possible convenience. For example, you may need to provide information on your past health history if you are submitting an emergency medical claim or a trip cancellation claim due to a medical condition.

The documentation you need to provide will depend on the type of claim, the type of plan you purchased and the province/territory in which you live. Visit the Travel Insurance Claims page for more details about how to submit a claim.

If you don't call Allianz Global Assistance first, your benefits may be reduced and your coverage may be limited. Gender pay gap composite

Dozens of Australian businesses have gender pay gaps above 50%, landmark data reveals

Data showing nearly two-thirds of workplaces have a pay gap that favours men is being published in the hopes of ending disparity

Dozens of Australian companies have gender pay gaps of more than 50%, according to landmark data released for the first time by the government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

The individual gender pay gaps at nearly 5,000 businesses across Australia – every private company with 100 employees or more – were published on Tuesday with the explicit aim of attempting to reduce the gender pay gap.

The data paints a stark picture, with some of the country’s biggest and most recognisable employers posting gender pay gaps of 30-40% in favour of male employees.

The publication of this data comes after the government passed the Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (Closing the Gender Pay Gap) bill 2023. Nationally, the gender pay gap sits at 19%, meaning that over the course of a year, the median that a woman is paid is $18,461 less than the median of what a man is paid.

“The absolute objective of doing this is to create momentum to close the gender pay gap,” Mary Wooldridge, the chief executive of WGEA, said.

“The evidence has shown overseas that [publishing individual company pay gaps] is a catalyst for action to be taken … It’s not a silver bullet. It’s not going to close overnight, but we expect reductions.”

More than 3,000 employers, or 61.6% of the total, had a gender pay gap that favoured men. Meanwhile, 30.1% (1,493 employers) had a neutral gender pay gap – defined as a gap of 5% or lower – and just 412 employers, or 8.3% of the total, had a pay gap that favoured women. The Guardian (listed in the data as GNM Australia) reported a pay gap of 2.5%.

The pay gaps are based on the median remuneration for men and women in each business – that is, the middle value when the pay of male or female employees within a company is listed from lowest to highest.

“It’s really important that it’s known that it’s not about equal pay,” Wooldridge said. “So equal pay [for equal work] has been the law in Australia for over 50 years. The gender pay gap is more than that, because it looks at, in this case, the median remuneration … If you have a lot of men who are highly paid and a lot of women who are in the lower paid areas, then the gender pay gap will reflect that by showing the differential between the two.”

Thirty-eight companies had gender pay gaps in favour of men of 50% or more.

The largest of these pay gaps was at Hunter Primary Care, a health services provider in the Newcastle region of NSW with a pay gap of 73.1%. The company said the pay gap was due to the fact that it had a large number of highly paid male GPs who worked an average of one four-hour shift a month. Their salaries were annualised by WGEA as part of calculating the gap, but when these employees were removed from the dataset, the gap came down considerably.

WGEA said it was important to include the annualised salaries of casual and part-time employees, because women make up a large proportion of this workforce.

There were 27 companies with gender pay gaps of 50% or more in favour of women. These were largely concentrated in the healthcare and social assistance sectors. Of the 27 companies with the largest pro-women pay gaps, 18 were disability support organisations.

Airlines tended to have very significant pay gaps. Alliance Airlines had a pay gap of 50.2%, Jetstar’s was 43.7%, Virgin Australia Airlines sat at 41.7%, Cathay Pacific had 39.5% and Qantas had a pay gap of 37%.

A Qantas spokesperson said the pay gap “does not mean women are paid less than men to do the same jobs at Qantas and Jetstar, but shows there is a significant underrepresentation of women in highly paid roles like pilots and engineers across airlines globally”. The company is “working hard to encourage more women into pilot and engineering roles” but that due to the years of training required “improving the gender balance of these workgroups will take time”, the spokesperson said.

A Virgin Australia spokesperson echoed this, saying its pay gap was driven by the fact “we have a larger proportion of men occupying higher paying roles, such as pilots and aircraft engineering roles”. Virgin is “focused on improving the demographic profile of key roles across our organisation over time”, the spokesperson said. The other airlines did not respond to requests for comment.

Banks scored badly. Out of more than 30 banks, none had a neutral gender pay gap, or a pay gap that favoured women. Eight banks had a median pay gap of more than 30%.

after newsletter promotion

The big four banks all paid men significantly more than women, based on median pay packages. Commonwealth Bank had the highest pay gap at 29.9%, followed by Westpac (28.5%), ANZ with 23.1%, and NAB at 18.8%.

Spokespeople for CBA and Westpac said their pay gaps were reflective of the makeup of the workforce, with higher numbers of women working in lower-paid areas of the business such as contact centres, operations and retail branches. Both banks said they were working to reduce the pay gap.

NAB said it had made “solid progress” regarding pay equity and representation but acknowledged there was more work to do. ANZ said the company had “a strong focus on the gender pay gap. In the last two years our gender pay gap has improved five percentage points from 28.1% to 23.1%”, but acknowledged it had to do more.

Sally Curtis, a lecturer at the research school of management at ANU, said when you look at other countries that have introduced similar legislation requiring employers to publish their pay gaps – including the UK, Denmark and Canada – gender pay gaps have come down.

Curtis said there are many reasons that addressing the gender pay gap is so crucial.

“It’s not good for individual women but it’s also not good for society … There’s a moral reason for doing this. The gender pay gap is an indicator of who has power in society. [It’s] about fairness and treating people of all genders fairly, in terms of power distribution in society, and valuing the work that everybody does.”

Research conducted by KPMG found that women bearing the brunt of caring responsibilities for children and older family members caused about one-third of the gender pay gap.

Women are far more likely to take time out of work after having children and are far more likely to work part-time than men – 30% of women, compared to 11% of men. But employer data showed that that in 2022-23, only 7% of managers are employed part-time, which means part-time workers face a “promotion cliff”.

According to KPMG, gender discrimination accounted for 36% of the cause of the pay gap.

“There can be conscious or unconscious discrimination in hiring and pay decisions,” said Natasha Bradshaw, a senior associate at the Grattan Institute. “We also know that women are less likely to negotiate for higher pay or to strongly advocate for themselves or play up their achievements to go for a promotion. Often, that’s because of the, often correct, perception that they’ll face backlash for doing that.”

The other main driver of the pay gap was industrial and occupational segregation, which sees women over-represented in lower paid industries, according to KPMG.

This was reflected in the pay gap data released on Tuesday. While every single industry had a pay gap in favour of men, the largest pay gaps tended to be in the highest paid industries. For example, construction had a pay gap of 31.8% (meaning the median paid to men was $38,562 more than that paid to women); financial and insurance services had a gap of 26.1% ($36,537); and professional, scientific and technical services had a gap of 26.1% or ($34,600).

The smallest gaps were in some of the lowest paid industries – accommodation and food services (1.9% or $1,122); public administration and safety (2.3% or $1,638); and arts and recreation services (4.6% or $3,493).

“What we need to reduce the gender pay gap is a strong commitment across society – government, from businesses, from the community, from the education sector,” Bradshaw said.

Wooldridge said that while the factors that lead to gender pay gaps at companies are often society-wide and complex, companies can still do more to shrink the pay gap.

“I always think there’s things that employees can do and creative employers are doing it. You know whether it’s pilots, or manufacturing or mining, we hear great stories of employers going into schools and recruiting, or supporting scholarships. So you can be passive and say, ‘well, we get what we get’, or you can be proactive and try and shift that by moving earlier in the pipeline.”
