Why Choose Us for Your India Nature Adventure?
- An All-Encompassing Wildlife Itinerary...in Less-Traveled Parks This is the ultimate India experience for nature lovers. Boost your chances of seeing Bengal tigers—plus a host of other Indian wildlife—on visits to three different national parks that are home to some of India's most concentrated tiger populations. Most travelers go to Ranthambore National Park at peak season, which is heavily advertised and very crowded. We visit equally appealing Bandhavgarh National Park instead, plus Kanha and Kaziranga, which are more remote with far fewer tourists. Kanha also offers some of India's best tiger-viewing possibilities, while Kaziranga offers close encounters with rhinos and wild elephants. We also have a chance to see seven deer species and 600-plus bird species among an impressive diversity of wildlife.
- India’s Finest Naturalist Guides Our India Expedition Leaders average more than 15 years' experience—with top-level training including resources from WWF scientists. You won’t find more knowledgeable, personable or enthusiastic guides than those who are proud to work for us. Our philosophy is simple: a nature adventure is only as good as the guide who leads it, so we provide the very best! See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
- A Small Group Means More Authentic Nature Experiences Most visitors to India travel in large groups aboard tour buses, focusing on cities and crowded cultural monuments. But that’s no way to experience India’s rich nature, which is our focus. We take just 11 guests, for a lower impact in nature reserves and more personal encounters with wildlife and local people.
- Nine Days of Wildlife-Focused Activities in Varied Habitats Spend three days each in three premier wildlife reserves as we explore contrasting Asian habitats: the dry mixed deciduous forests of central India and the moist floodplains and grasslands of the Brahmaputra basin. Morning and afternoon safari outings provide a variety of perspectives.
- Distinctive Accommodations Enhance Your Safari When you travel with us to India, our accommodations ensure your every comfort. Environmentally sensitive ecolodges, while secluded, offer exceptional amenities. Each is selected for proximity to wildlife and the high quality of the guest experience. India’s luxury urban hotels are renowned worldwide, and the 5-star hospitality of the landmark Taj Mahal Hotel in Delhi and the Taj City Center New Town Kolkata offer welcome indulgences before and between our safari adventures.
- Our Presence Directly Helps to Protect Tigers After years of precipitously declining tiger numbers, India is charting steady increases. Its 2022 quadrennial tiger census counted 3,682 tigers, up from 2,967 in 2018, an annual rise of 6%. Conservation groups attribute a share of the increase to responsible ecotourism. The economic value of visitors to India's tiger reserves benefits local communities, offering people an incentive to protect the wildlife they share the land with. Given that India is home to 75% of the world's remaining wild tigers, our presence here for wildlife tourism here is integral to that continued success.
- Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Outstanding India Wildlife Safari With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive quality value guarantee that promises we will meet the high expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.

When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

Central India Wildlife Tour
I had to cancel the tour for personal reasons. This review is in praise of the thoughtful and understanding treatment that I received from Sunil at Alkof. He spend a lot of time explaining everything to me before and booked. Then, when I had to cancel, he was sympathetic and refunded my deposit. I've travelled a great deal and there are many tour operators who are untrustworthy. Alkof has shown itself to be honest and reliable.
Bandhavgarh Kanha Pench Tour
Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

Best North India Wildlife Tour
Many thanks to Yolo India Tours for organizing my dream holiday of experiencing the Indian wildlife. Our 10 days wildlife holiday ranks high among our all time favorite holiday. This tour is a treat for every wildlife lover and offer the best wildlife experience of India. From our first informational emails, to being personally dropped at the airport to go home everything was perfect. The hotels were wonderful and safaris to the national park organised very well. I will always remember this wild life experience of India.
Taj, Tigers & Lakes - Golden Triangle Delhi Agra Jaipur with Ranthambore & Udaipur
Pushpendre our guide was extremely helpful polite and informative He was keen to accommodate our needs and explain any issues we did not understand He was always pointing out things we may find interesting and to stop for photos We were very impressed by his driving skills Overall he enhanced our enjoyment of the trip Maureen and Alexandra
For The Love of Taj & Tiger - Golden Triangle of India & Ranthambore with 3 Tiger Safaris
We had a wonderful 8 days with MTA -tour radar. We enjoyed our kind driver Manu who tried to accommodate our every wish - while managing to drive the busy crazy streets of India. Each guide was unique and explained the sights well. We had fun on the Jeep safaris and saw beautiful landscapes and some animals but seeing a tiger is rare. The hotels were acceptable- said 4 star but realty 3-3.5 USA saying that - the service was excellent and we were in remote places. The food was delicious- repetitive after a ew days but it’s India so Curry’s and dal! We would recommend it to anyone not wanting to be in a large group. As a credit to MTA tours we were well cared for and checked in on - often. We also enjoyed private dinner and cooking in Jaipur. We would recommend paying major tips in advance- this became awkward- with finding atms and getting small bills. Overall really fun and worthwhile!

Highly recommended. Everything that I hoped and expected, plus more. From the warm and hospitable welcome of Ms Sonia and Ms Shilpi, through the expert and safe driving of Mr Shiv, on to the knowledgeable and companionable local guides, I have nothing but gratitude and praise. A concise and well-constructed itinerary that delivered a memorable Golden Triangle experience. Plus tigers! Tremendous value for money.

Indian Wildlife Safari Reviews
Our expectations were fairly high before we started, but we were blown away by the expertise, treatment and knowledge of our MTA GUIDE, Manish. Additionally, our driver Prakash was professional and very efficient. Nothing was too much trouble and we have come away with a feeling of genuinely having had a true 'Indian Experience'. Thank you, MTA!

Redefining the Indian Safari Experience
A luxurious melody of sustainable living.
Pugdundee Safaris is recognized as one of India's leading responsible safari companies. With seven intimate jungle lodges in Central India and many bespoke wilderness experiences it presents the very best of the Indian subcontinent wildlife & hospitality. Between 2009 and 2022, we have been awarded for our excellence in wildlife safaris, our commitment to sustainability, our experienced naturalists and our pioneering mobile safari initiative.
Pugdundee is a Hindi word meaning a foot trail commonly used by humans and animals, this word is popularly used for such beaten paths in the Indian jungles. We continuously strive to deliver the best possible guest experience, while still integrating the conservation of jungles and the people living around. We are motivated by the hope of reaching out to people in the remotest areas of our country, as we believe that they are the front-runners of wildlife conservation. However, maybe just a drop in the ocean we consider that we are making a significant contribution to wildlife conservation and rural economy wherever our lodges are.
Driven by the love of Indian jungles we made an unplanned humble beginning in 1986, with a small-tented camp at Panna. Between 2007 -2010, two more lodges were setup and it was not until the year 2011 that they were all put together under a common umbrella. Today, Pugdundee Safaris is run by a passionate team of wildlifers and hospitality professionals with a team of over 300 people committed in providing an incredible wildlife experience. The team includes naturalists, nature guides, boatmen, trackers and a marketing team based in Delhi.
Besides its mainstay of running wildlife lodges, Pugdundee Safaris has been keenly engaged in conservation and community development activities. At Pugdundee we believe local people hold the future of the forests in their hands and can either help protect or destroy them. If we wish to conserve our forests, we must look after the needs of local people by helping to improve their ability to earn livelihoods. Our lodges set mostly in remote locations away from regular tourism hubs help ensure that the benefit of eco-tourism is distributed far and beyond.
Our Eco Wildlife Lodges
Our lodges are nestled in the large forested estates in the most pristine locations away from regular tourism hubs, yet close enough to offer easy access to the national parks. Offering an unparalleled Indian Safari experience, they are the epitome of luxury, comfort & unimagined indulgence.

Most first-time visitors to North India start their trip from Delhi. Even if you intend to just pass through the city, there is a wealth of birdlife in different corners of the capital where you can easily spend a few hours of fruitful birdwatching.
Good birding can be had on the banks of the Yamuna river while Lodhi gardens and Buddha Jayanti Park hold a fine selection of species. In addition, some historical sites serve as suitable habitats for many birds.
Species to look out for are the greater flamingo , Eurasian spoonbill , striated grassbird , and many species of ducks and raptors such as booted eagle , marsh harrier , and peregrine falcon among many others. Overnight Delhi.

Days 2 and 3 – Kosi River and Kumeria Reserve Forest, Uttrakhand
The Western Himalayan foothills, some 250 km northeast of Delhi offer excellent wildlife and birding opportunities. Your home for the next two nights will be the luxury Click Resort Corbett Tiger Den on the outskirts of the world-famous Jim Corbett National Park , named after the legendary man-eating-tiger hunter, Jim Corbett. With an Asian elephant population of over 2,000 individuals in Uttarakhand , this is your first chance to spot them during the trip.
On arrival, you can spend the latter part of the day searching along the Kosi river for brown dipper , little forktail , spotted forktail , three species of wagtail , brown fish owl , tawny eagle owl , and other lowland species.
Next day is spent in the forests around Mohan looking for great barbet , orange-bellied leafbird , crimson sunbird , black bulbul , rusty-cheeked scimitar babblers, a variety of warblers , tits, and flycatchers . Tracks of leopards and wild tigers are commonly seen, though the big cats are only occasionally spotted. Two nights at Tiger Den.
Days 4 and 5 – Jim Corbett National Park
The Dhangari Gate of Corbett National Park is a short thirty minutes drive from Kumeria and is an excellent place to spot Sirkeer Malkhoa ( sirkeer cuckoo )and streak-throated woodpeckers . On the 31 km drive to Dhikala, elephant and tiger sightings are common, mostly during the warmer months. Otherwise, it is not typically easy to spot the Royal Bengal Tiger in the dense jungles of Corbett. A jungle safari will take you closer to a sighting of a lifetime.
Mammals of Corbett National Park
Tiger, leopard, elephant, jungle cat, fishing cat, leopard cat, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, chital deer, sambar deer, hogg deer, barking deer, goral (goat-antelopes), wild boar, jackal, rabbit, Indian grey mongoose, otters, Indian pangolins, yellow-throated martens, langur, and rhesus monkey.
The tiger, the national animal of India, is the biggest cat in the world and a glimpse of this endangered species will leave you in awe. The elusive leopards are more difficult to spot, so if you see one consider yourself a very lucky person.
Expect to see great hornbill , grey-headed fishing eagle , and Pallas’s eagle on a stump in the middle of the Ramganga Reservoir once you reach Dhikala. Here you will spend the rest of the afternoon in your open vehicle looking for grassland specialists like the marsh harrier , black francolin , red avadavat, and oriental skylark are quite common here.
There will be two more game drives in the morning and evening on the second day in the eternal search for the tiger. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and scan the forest for the famous tiger stripes. Driving through the forest east of Dhikala is the best place to spot the elusive cat as prey is plentiful in the chaur grasslands of Corbett.
There are about 700 Asian elephants in Corbett; they are part of a migrating population that also lives in Rajaji National Park. These Asian elephant herds can often be seen feeding on the green grass in this area. You will spend two eventful nights at Malani Forest rest house . Keep in mind that there is no phone reception at Malani and they run on solar.
Day 6 – Corbett to Nainital
After breakfast, you bid adieu to Corbett and take the scenic journey back to Dhangari Gate and onwards to the town of Ramnagar. Have lunch at any of the good wayside restaurants, then cross the barrage over the Kosi River, where there is a small park on the left.
Here you will be rewarded with large flocks of Brahminy ducks ( ruddy shelduck ), and other common waterbirds like cormorants and darters . The reservoir walls are one of the few places where you can spot the rare wall creeper .
Towards the end of the day drive to Nainital (38 km), the hill town at 7000′ where you will be spending three nights. Overnight at Nainital.
Days 7, 8, and 9 – Nainital
Nainital is a beautiful hill station, affording excellent views of the Himalayas and some of the prominent peaks such as Nanda Devi (the second-highest mountain in India) and Trishul Peak. Many interesting bird species are found in the local gardens and the surrounding hillsides, making birding in Nainital a memorable experience.
Birds like the red-billed blue magpie , chestnut-crowned laughing thrush , and black-headed jay can be seen within walking distance of Vikram Vintage Inn, your home during your stay in Nainital.
The lush Mongoli Valley is a thirty minute drive downhill from Nainital where you will spend the better part of the day looking for striated laughing thrush , Asian barred owlet , orange-flanked bush robin , and slaty-headed parakee t.
On the third morning, follow a trail uphill from the hotel till it meets a road. Cross the road and walk down the steps in search of Indian black-lored tits , bolden bush robin , and white-capped bunting .
The Uttarakhand Government has an exceptional network of clean and affordable guesthouses. For those who want to spend more time birding or hiking, these provide excellent bases.
Day 10 – Agra
The best way to travel to Agra from Nainital is by driving down to the railway station at Kathgodam,(38 km) and catching the overnight train to Agra Cantt railway station. You will arrive in time to catch a glimpse of the sun rising over the Taj Mahal, a destination at the top of most visitor’s lists.
The river Yamuna flows directly behind this mausoleum and early morning sightings on the banks could include waders like common sandpiper , black-winged stilts , plovers , great thick-knees , gulls , river terns , and more.
After a long day of sightseeing and birding, you will drive for about two hours towards Bharatpur. Enroute, don’t forget to pay a visit to the ancient city of Fatehpur Sikri. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in the 16th century, was the capital of the Mughal empire for 10 years, and has one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid. Overnight at the stunning Bagh Resort , Bharatpur. While at Bagh Resort don’t forget to visit their magnificent bird hides. Golden oriole , hoopoe , black-winged stilt , white-throated kingfisher , and pond heron are regularly seen.
Day 11 and 12 – Bharatpur
Bharatpur is home to the world-famous Keoladeo National Park , the most popular bird sanctuary in India , and you must spend at least a few days on any trip to North India. This is probably the only place in the world where as many as 130 species have been recorded in a single morning of birding.
The sanctuary is well-managed and the birds are not easily spooked. During winter, the park is home to nearly 400 species and on a good day, a visitor can hope to spot nearly half of them, especially the period between October and March when huge numbers of Paleoarctic migrants arrive and mingle with the resident birds.
There is an excellent network of tracks across the park which can either be explored on foot or bicycles available for hire at the entrance gate. Great white pelicans fly in during winter while Dalmatian pelicans occur annually. The stunning black-necked stork is on the decline, but fortunately can still be seen at Bharatpur. Overnight at Bharatpur.
You will spend the next day at the Band Baretha Wildlife Sanctuary , about an hour and a half drive from Bharatpur and a birdwatcher’s paradise. There are many regular species found here, but the star attraction here is the Indian skimmer . There is a dam at the end of the lake where you can look for the brown crake, painted snipe , dusky crag Martin , and the rarer crag martin .
On your leisurely return to Bharatpur, there are spots to see booted eagle , desert wheatear , tawny pippin , Blyth’s pipit , and long-billed pipit .
Day 13 and 14 – Ranthambore National Park
Day 13 will take you to one of the best national parks in India, Ranthambore. Once a famous hunting ground of the former maharajas of Rajasthan, the Ranthambore National Park offers an exceptional chance to see the royal Bengal tiger in its natural habitat. It can be easily incorporated with your tour to Bharatpur as it is just a two-hour train/road drive.
You can access the park by private jeep or canters, but to maintain the flow of visitors, the number of vehicles allowed inside the park during morning and afternoon is greatly restricted.
Ranthambore is an exciting Indian National Park. Primarily known as the home of the Bengal tiger, the park has amazing wildlife, with a total of 40 species of mammals, 320 species of birds, and 35 species of reptiles. A wildlife safari in Ranthambore will bring you great animal sightings.
Mammals of Ranthambore:
Tigers, sloth bear, leopard, spotted deer, sambar deer, chital, nilgai, jackal, desert fox, Indian fox, jackal, striped hyena, jungle cat, desert cats, caracal, common langur, macaque, Indian wild boar, chinkara, common palm civet, five striped palm squirrel, palm civet, common yellow bats, rufous tailed hare, Indian false vampire, Indian flying fox, Indian gerbil, Indian mole rat, long-eared hedgehog, ratel, Indian porcupine, small Indian mongoose, small Indian civet, and common mongoose.
Reptiles of Ranthambore:
Snub-nosed marsh crocodiles, tortoise, desert monitor lizards, banded kraits, common kraits, Ganga soft-shelled turtles, cobras, Indian pythons, saw-scaled vipers rat snakes, Russel’s vipers, North Indian flap-shelled turtles and the Indian chameleon.
The stunning scenery of steep cliffs and a thick expanse of jungle dotted with historical ruins are worth a visit in itself. Semi-desert specialties found here are painted spurfowl , painted sandgrouse , the Eurasian owl , and Indian eagle owl ( rock eagle owl ).
Apart from big cat and sloth bear sightings, there is plenty of good birding, both outside and inside the park. Half a day should be kept aside for birding on the main road to the park. Indian courser and the yellow-wattled lapwing can be found here. The acacia woodlands on either side of the road are good for white-bellied drongo and the scarce white-naped woodpecker , and the black-rumped flameback woodpecker . You will be spending two nights at any of the lodges outside the park.
Day 15 – Return to New Delhi
Your return journey to Delhi from Ranthambore will be by rail. It takes about six hours by express train to reach Delhi and if you have the afternoon to spare, head to the Humayun Tomb (built in the 1560s), ten minutes from the railway station.
You can spend a good couple of hours birding here on the lookout for spotted owlets , black kite , black-rumped flameback woodpecker , and many other resident species.
Return to the hotel/airport to freshen up, before catching the flight to your next destination.
(If you choose to return to Delhi by car, stop at a place called Sonkh, about 15 km from Bharatpur, on the road towards Mathura, to see several Indian black ibis (also known as red-naped ibis ) feeding in the open fields.

WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA – A BEGINNER’S GUIDE
Introduction
Hey nature lover! Dreaming of your first big cat sighting? Looking for a weekend getaway from the hustle bustle of city life? Is a wildlife safari just the thing on your mind? We figured you may have some questions and we are here to help you ease your way to the forests. So, let’s go!
Wildlife safaris in India have become one of the most thrilling vacation activities or popular weekend escapades in recent times. The growing number of majestic big cats, thus greater sighting opportunities, the meticulously planned itineraries and the well managed resorts and lodges promise a memorable trip of peaceful rejuvenation.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about wildlife safaris in India and their answers in nutshells.
1. ARE WILDLIFE SAFARIS IN INDIA SAFE?
With more and more trained naturalists and stricter rules and regulations, a wildlife safari in India is not only an enjoyable activity, but is safer than ever before. Follow the instructions of your naturalist / guide / tour operator and you will be fine!
2. BEST NATIONAL PARKS IN INDIA?
This answer is totally subjective and it is hard to pick one over the other. Despite it, if we had to pick our favourites, we’d pick Kabini in South India, Kanha in Central India and Jim Corbett in North India. If you are planning a wildlife trip and are conflicted about which park to visit, please feel free to contact us and we will happily assist you.
3. BEST TIME TO GO ON A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?
Wildlife safaris in India occur year round, although the main season is between October and June in most national parks and tiger reserves. The core zones remain closed during the monsoon months i.e. July to September, while the buffer zones remain open to tourists.
Broadly speaking, the best time to go on a wildlife safari is between October and April. Our suggestion is to plan your wildlife safari depending on the purpose of your travel and the species you hope to see.
If you love tigers, March to May would be the best time to spot them. If you love migratory birds, November to January would be ideal. As a photographer, you may enjoy visiting the jungles in October and November, right after the monsoons when everything is lush and fresh.
Follow us on social media to know more about animal behaviour, sightings, and wildlife photography.
4. TIMINGS OF A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?
Most national parks in India offer 2 wildlife safaris in the day. The morning safari is usually between 5-11 A.M. (depending on the national park and the time of year you travel). The afternoon safari is between 2-7 P.M.
The better-known national parks such as Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh and Kanha offer full day safaris which operate from 6 A.M. and 6 P.M. Additionally, some of these parks and others also offer night safaris.
5. HOW TO BOOK A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?
There are two ways to book wildlife safaris in India. Usually, most resorts and tour operators offer packages which include stay, food and safaris. So, all you need to do is to give them your travel dates and they will book the safaris as per your schedule.
The second option is to book the safari online yourself. For example, if you want to book a safari in Tadoba, you can click on this link that will take you to their website. Likewise, each forest has its own website.
Lastly, you can hop onto a pre-planned meticulously designed itinerary that suits your needs. You can check out some of our upcoming tours here .
6. HOW MANY WILDLIFE SAFARIS ARE NEEDED TO SPOT A TIGER?
Legend says, in the jungle you might not see a tiger, but the tiger is always watching you. But, there is never a guarantee of a tiger sighting and the element of luck is always involved. However, the growing tiger numbers have made sightings more frequent. We would suggest a minimum of 4 safaris to boost your chances of a tiger sighting.
Some people get multiple tiger sightings worth a lifetime on their very first safari, while it takes others ages to spot their first tiger. It took ace wildlife photographer Sudhir Shivaram 10 years to get his first tryst with a tiger in the wild! Test your luck!
7. WHAT ANIMALS CAN I EXPECT TO SPOT ON A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?
Usually, the charismatic tigers and elusive leopards are on top of most people’s lists and any sighting should be considered extremely lucky and precious. Moreover, depending on the forest you visit, you can spot elephants, rhinoceros, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, wolves, civets, otters among other usual suspects like the spotted deer, sambar deer, nilgai, wild boars and langurs.
Some birds that you would most often also encounter are rufous treepies, jungle fowls, jungle babblers, bee-eaters, Indian rollers, woodpeckers, peafowls and kingfishers among several others. You can also bump into some raptors such as the crested serpent eagle, changeable hawk eagle, white-rumped vulture, oriental honey buzzard, mottled-wood owl, spotted owlet and many more.
8. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CORE ZONE AND BUFFER ZONE?
Tourists are allowed to explore about 10-20% of a national park. Most forests divide the tourism zones into core zones and buffer zones. While core zones are forested areas where wildlife and natural resources are strongly protected by the forest department and no human activity is permitted, buffer zones are areas adjoining or surrounding the core area, where wildlife and nature is conserved, but coexists with small human hamlets with limited activity.
9. WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I WEAR WHILE ON A WILDLIFE SAFARI IN INDIA?
You can pick your clothes according to the season in which you visit the jungles. We recommend something that covers your legs to avoid insect bites. Avoid fluorescent clothes and try to blend in with the forest scenery.
In the summer months, you can wear anything you are comfortable in to battle the scorching heat. If you are allergic to dust, do not forget to cover your nose! It can get chilly during winter, especially before sunrise and after sunset so ensure you carry enough warm clothes and something to cover your ears. The rest is really your choice.
10. WHAT CAMERA EQUIPMENT SHOULD I CARRY?
Broadly speaking, an entry level DSLR camera body with a telephoto zoom lens of at least 200 mm should suffice for large mammals as you can sometimes spot them just 15 metres away! If you are interested in bird photography, a greater zoom length (400 mm and above) is necessary. Depending on your budget and the animal you wish to photograph, we leave the choice up to you!
However, if you need more help, read our blogs on our top recommendations of camera lenses for a wildlife safari. Tip – Do carry an extra battery and SD card. Also, a cleaning kit to wipe the dust off your lens and camera body is extremely important!
Here are a few last-minute tips! Do not forget to carry a first aid kit in case of any emergencies. Stay as alert and calm as possible during the safari and keep your phones on airplane mode. Also, please do not litter and do not feed the animals. Have a great time!
We hope this blog helped answer your questions and you are psyched about your upcoming wildlife safari! We would love to be the ones to show you your first or next tiger!

Arrive New Delhi
Arrive in Delhi and transfer to the Andaz Delhi Hotel . The day is yours to explore this vibrant cultural melting pot. Delhi consists of two starkly different worlds: upscale New Delhi was built as the seat of government for the British Raj; Old Delhi served as the capital of the Mughal Empire. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner and briefing at the hotel. Overnight at the Andaz Delhi Hotel .
New Delhi / Bhopal / Satpura National Park
Depart Delhi early on a flight to Bhopal, the capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. From there, a picturesque drive will take you to the sandstone peaks and narrow ravines of Satpura National Park. Satpura, covering roughly 200 square miles, is part of an ambitious government initiative that seeks to preserve and reclaim dwindling forests and repopulate the area with endangered wildlife. Dinner and overnight at the small Reni Pani Jungle Lodge at the edge of the Satpura Tiger Reserve.
Satpura National Park
Early this morning, cross the Denwa River in a 4×4 to watch the Satpura Reserve come alive. Satpura is located in a transition zone between the forests of eastern India and Western India—the careful observer will notice stands of both Teak and Sal—and this affords the privilege of being at the exact place where several habitats overlap. The area is home to Gaur, a bison-like animal that is the largest of all the world’s bovids; the world’s only four-horned antelope, the Chousingha; and the Rhesus Macaque. The impressive Malabar Giant Squirrel, an unusual species for Central India, has also been spotted here. But of all the park’s denizens, it is the Sloth Bear for which Satpura is most famous, for nowhere else on Earth are these typically elusive and reclusive creatures more conspicuous. Explore the reserve on foot or take another 4×4 safari to its outer reaches, constantly alert for any sign of the presence of this spectacular animal. Overnight Reni Pani Jungle Lodge .
Satpura / Pench National Park
Leave Satpura this morning for a scenic day’s drive past picture-perfect teak forests and jungle streams and arrive this afternoon in Pench National Park and Tiger Reserve. Immortalized by Rudyard Kipling in “ The Jungle Book ,” Pench’s terrain is characterized by both dry, deciduous forest and undulating grasslands, making it choice habitat for a staggering diversity of wildlife, including one of the highest densities of herbivores of any Indian park. Dinner and overnight at Jamtara Wilderness Lodge, in the heart of rural Pench outside the park .
Pench National Park
This India wildlife park gets its name from the Pench River, which winds through it like a python, adding a number of aquatic species to an already long list of wildlife. Renowned as an ever-more-reliable location for India’s apex predator, the iconic Bengal Tiger, Pench is also home to the elusive Asiatic Leopard and the handsome Dhole, or Asiatic Wild Dog. It’s also a bird-watcher’s dream, with over 250 recorded species, including the impressive Malabar Pied Hornbill, Crested Serpent-Eagle and Madhya Pradesh’s State Bird, the Yellow-footed Green Pigeon. Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and guided walks, watching herds of elegant Chital, or Spotted Deer, often accompanied by foraging troops of elegant, long-tailed Hanuman Langurs. Dinners and overnights at Jamtara Wilderness Lodge .
Pench / Kanha National Park
After breakfast, travel past rich farmland and colorful villages to Kanha National Park. This 366-square-mile preserve was established to save the endangered Barasingha, or Swamp Deer, before being declared part of the Project Tiger network. Take an afternoon wildlife safari, before returning for dinner and overnight at Kanha Jungle Lodge , at the edge of the park.
Kanha National Park
Kanha’s magnificent Sal forests are home to prolific wildlife, notably India’s largest population of tigers, and your time in this wildlife Mecca will focus on experiencing firsthand this most regal of big cats. Beginning every day before dawn, enter the park with morning mists still hanging over dew-drenched meadows. At sunrise, the forests resound with bird song, from the quiet purring of Jungle Owlets and rich melodies of Orange-headed Thrushes to the raucous crowing of Red Junglefowl. Be especially alert to the warning barks of Sambar, Chital or Barking Deer that may lead to a a majestic Bengal Tiger padding through the forest. While seeing tigers will undoubtedly be foremost in your mind, you may also cross paths with Golden Jackal, Ruddy Mongoose, Wild Boar, or the impressive Gaur.
Ascend the plateau of Bamni Dadar for panoramic views over the park far below. Flamboyant Asian Fairy Bluebirds, Red-whiskered Bulbuls and flocks of Scarlet Minivets enliven the treetops, and in the arid scrub of the plateau you may be lucky enough to glimpse the elusive Chousingha. This remote part of Madhya Pradesh still preserves its rural tradition, and between excursions into the park you’ll visit a nearby school for a taste of local village life. The lodge is also renowned for its fine Indian cuisine and you may choose to partake in a cooking demonstration.
Kanha / Raipur / Kolkata
After a last morning wildlife safari drive in Kanha, head east through rural villages to Raipur, in the state of Chhattisgarh. Transfer to the airport and fly to Kolkata, where you have time for dinner before the overnight at Taj City Centre New Town .
Kolkata / Guwahati / Kaziranga
Rise early this morning for a flight east to India’s principal tea-growing region, Assam, on the fertile plains of the Brahmaputra River. Land in Guwahati and continue by road to Kaziranga National Park, global stronghold of the prehistoric-looking Greater One-horned Rhinoceros. Once hunted to near-extinction, this rhino’s numbers have now rebounded to more than 1,600, two-thirds of which are found within this park. Kaziranga is also home to the highest density of tigers, although the density of the Elephant Grass makes seeing this elusive cat unlikely. Dinner and overnight at Diphlu River Lodge , in traditional stilt cottages set amongst lush bamboo groves.
Kaziranga National Park
Bordering the sacred Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga National Park is a World Heritage site and one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas of eastern India. Morning and afternoon game drives will reveal the park’s 160 square miles of Elephant Grass, marshland and dense, tropical, moist broadleaf forests. Aside from Greater One-horned Rhinoceros and the elusive tigers, the park is home to Asian Elephants, one of only two populations of wild Water Buffalo in existence, Barasingha, Hog Deer, and Indian Rock Python. It has also been deemed by Birdlife International an Important Bird Area, due to its population of both Lesser and Greater Adjutant Storks and the scarce and endangered Bengal Florican, as well as the abundant herons, migrant waterfowl and shorebirds that often throng its oxbow lakes, or jheels . Gather at our lodge on the final night for a festive farewell dinner. Overnights at Diphlu River Lodge .
Kaziranga / Guwahati / New Delhi
Drive back to Guwahati for an afternoon flight to Delhi. Transfer to the Andaz Delhi Hotel , near the airport, for dinner. Rooms are booked for the night, although many flights depart late this evening, or early the following morning.
Depart New Delhi
Transfer very early this morning to the airport for your international flights home.

6 sensational places to see wildlife in India
Explore India's National Parks to spot diverse animal life, including tigers, leopards, rhinos, birds and river dolphins.
Beyond India’s buzzing cities nature lovers can discover serene sanctuaries teeming with wildlife . While the iconic Bengal tiger—India’s national animal—is the top draw for safari-goers, an impressive array of wild things can be spotted in India’s teakwood forests, grasslands, mountains, rivers, and other natural spaces.
India has more than a hundred national parks, covering over 15,600 square miles of protected land. Many of the country’s wildlife sanctuaries once were hunting reserves of the maharajas, and more than 50 have been designated as tiger reserves. According to the last available census, done in 2014 by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), India is home to 2,226 tigers, 70 percent of which reside within tiger reserves.
If you’re ready to fulfill a bucket-list dream of seeing a wild Bengal tiger or are eager to spot Asian elephants, Asiatic wild dogs, and other species rarely seen outside of zoological parks, here are six superlative spots in India for wildlife watching.
Nagarahole National Park, Karnataka
The lush forests and marshlands of southern India’s Nagarahole National Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park , form one of the country’s premier tiger destinations. Backed by the hills of the Western Ghats, the park is filled with fragrant sandalwood and teak trees, thick groves of bamboo, and dozens of winding streams. A jeep safari is the best option to spot big cats, while a slow drift in a coracle—a small round boat—along the Kabini River offers prime viewing opportunities for aquatic birds, crocodiles, and Indian elephants.
FUN FACT: Nagarahole is one of the best national parks in the world for spotting leopards.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The park is open year-round but can close due to flooding in July and August during monsoon season. It’s best explored as part of a tour of the region, combining Nagarahole with trips to Karnataka’s beaches, hill stations, and the lovely city of Mysore (Mysuru).
WHEN TO VISIT: October to February
GATEWAY CITY: Mysore
Kaziranga National Park, Assam
On the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga National Park began as a forest preserve in 1905 with the aim of bringing the greater one-horned rhinoceros back from the brink of extinction. Hunted for their prized horns, rhinos are a prime target for poaching. With Kaziranga’s protection, nearly two-thirds of the world’s population of greater one-horned rhinos now live inside the park. The reserve’s many tigers are well hidden amid elephant grass and dense jungle. But you’ll spot buffalo, endangered swamp deer, and river dolphins.
FUN FACT : Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985, Kaziranga is one of the last areas in eastern India largely untouched by humans.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO : Most visitors fly from Kolkata to Jorhat, 70 miles from the park, or Guwahati, 135 miles away. The park is closed from June to September for monsoon season.
WHEN TO VISIT: November to March
GATEWAY CITY : Jorhat
Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan
Situated between the historic cities of Jaipur and Agra, Keoladeo National Park is an ornithologist’s dream, with hundreds of bird species in its compact size. Once a duck-hunting ground for maharajas in the 19th century, this reserve became a bird sanctuary in 1976 and a national park in 1982. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it plays a vital role in protecting migratory birds, an aim of National Geographic’s 2018 Year of the Bird campaign. Many species along the Central Asian flyway, some critically endangered, winter here. Part wetland and part savanna, the park is crowded with painted storks, and birders delight in spotting sarus cranes, spoonbills, and black-headed ibises.
FUN FACT: Keoladeo hosts migratory waterfowl from China, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Siberia.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO : Most visitors arrive via the two-hour drive from Agra, while the nearest airports are in Delhi and Jaipur.
GATEWAY CITY: Agra or Jaipur
Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh
Picturesque Satpura National Park , in the highlands of central India, is a photographer’s paradise. Grasslands and malachite green forests are riddled by ravines and slot canyons, concealing temples and waterfalls. “I love Madhya Pradesh,” says National Geographic photographer Matthieu Paley. “It’s a pocket of real India, far from the obsessive selfie culture. Just make sure you bring enough spare camera batteries.” The park is home to leopards, birds, and sloth bears, but the highlight is its diverse range of antelope and deer species.
FUN FACT: Tranquil herds of diminutive Indian muntjacs, long-limbed spotted chital, and splendidly antlered sambars and blackbucks move through Satpura’s woodland glades.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Satpura offers safaris by jeep, motorboat, kayak, and foot. Bhopal is the nearest airport, while Pipariya is the closest railhead. The park is easily accessed by road from the cities of Jabalpur, Chhindwara, and Nagpur.
WHEN TO VISIT: November to February
GATEWAY CITY: Bhopal
Hemis National Park, Jammu And Kashmir
High in the Himalaya, Hemis National Park envelops snow-covered peaks and alpine tundra at the northern tip of India. Most visitors come in summer when Buddhist prayer flags flutter under the sun, but the park is a year-round picture of sparse beauty. “Visit Hemis in winter,” advises Paley. “That’s when landscapes are starkest.” It’s also the best time to spot this remote park’s headline attraction: snow leopards. A new count is forthcoming, but the WII, citing a 2013 estimate, reported that 3,920 to 6,390 snow leopards may remain in the wild. Hemis likely hosts the densest population, but sightings are rare.
FUN FACT: The park’s elusive snow leopards are known as “gray ghosts.”
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: About an hour flight from Delhi, the Ladakh region’s main city, Leh, is 11,500 feet above sea level, so allow time to acclimatize to the altitude.
WHEN TO VISIT: January to March
GATEWAY CITY: Leh
Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Andaman Islands
Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park consists of 15 forest-cloaked islands surrounded by coral reefs and home to indigenous tribes. Tourism is just beginning to take off here, and only two islands—Jolly Buoy and Red Skin—are open to the public, offering visitors a profound sense of remoteness. “Finding a king cobra on her nest, visiting the home of the endemic Narcondam hornbill, watching manta rays feed in the current. These have been my most precious experiences in 40 years of visiting the Andamans ,” says Rom Whitaker, a National Geographic filmmaker and co-founder of the Andaman Nicobar Environment Team.
FUN FACT: More than 560 coral species have been identified in the coral reefs of Jolly Buoy and Red Skin islands.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Arrival is via Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair, 600 miles from India’s east coast. Most activities close from June to August for the monsoon.

Beyond wildlife safari in national parks: 6 must-do activities
TRAVEL TRENDS , INDIA Updated : Apr 21, 2024, 11:41 IST
National parks are not just about observing wildlife from a distance. These are sanctuaries of biodiversity, preserving precious ecosystems and providing habitats for diverse flora and fauna. But, they are in fact much more than that. They offer a plethora of activities that cater to diverse interests, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all visitors. Apart from thrilling adventures, you get to enjoy some of the serene moments in nature, which definitely stands out whenever you are in national parks.
Forest trek
Most national parks have extensive networks of hiking trails, catering to all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a novice explorer, there's a trail waiting for you. Hike through those breathtaking landscapes, from towering mountains to lush forests, and get to see the raw beauty of nature first-hand. Places like Kanha National Park, Satpura National Park, and Kunjkharak trek near Corbett are some that you should definitely try.
Wildlife encounters
Beyond the confines of a safari vehicle, national parks also present chances for intimate wildlife experiences. Participate in guided strolls or explore on your own to witness animals in their natural surroundings, ranging from elusive birds to awe-inspiring predators. Always keep a safe distance and honour the wildlife's habitat.
Camping under the stars
Yes, you also have the option to spend a night beneath the twinkling stars by camping in national parks. Set up your tent at designated camping areas for an authentic and immersive adventure. Drift off to sleep serenaded by the melodies of nature and awaken to the breathtaking vistas of a new day unfolding. Several national parks, including Eravikulam National Park in Kerala, Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, Sariska National Park in Rajasthan, and others, offer campsite facilities nearby for your convenience.
Water-based activities
Numerous national parks feature untouched lakes, rivers, and water passages, providing ample chances for aquatic adventures. As a result, boat safaris emerge as a primary attraction for tourists visiting these parks. Providing a distinct chance to venture into regions unreachable by land, boat safaris gain significant acclaim, especially in destinations like the Sunderbans and Periyar, where observing wildlife via jeep or elephant proves challenging.
Educational programs
National parks are treasure troves of natural and cultural heritage, and educational programs offer insights into their significance. Join ranger-led programs, guided walks, or interpretive tours to learn about the park's history, geology, and ecology. Gain a deeper appreciation for the land and its inhabitants.
Photography expeditions
Capture the beauty of national parks through the lens of a camera on photography expeditions. From golden sunrises to vibrant sunsets, there's no shortage of breathtaking scenes to photograph. Join workshops or explore on your own, honing your skills while creating lasting memories.
