Contributor, historic racer and now working on two wheels for our motorcycling titles as head of digital.

This is the Ford Ecosport, and we have high hopes for it. It’s based on the Fiesta – the finest driving supermini money can buy. It uses Ford’s peppy range of turbocharged EcoBoost engines. And, it’s a Ford crossover – if the Kuga is anything to go by, this Nissan Juke and Renault Captur-rivalling soft-roader should be a winner, and give the Peugeot 2008 and Vauxhall Mokka nightmares…

Doesn’t make a very good first impression though, does it, this Ford Ecosport?

Glance up from the spec sheet to gaze upon the car and it’s fair to say the Ecosport is no looker. The collection of grilles in a teetering stack, together with piggy headlights and bluff bonnet all aim for SUV aggressiveness, but sail too close to cuteness. It’s like a Chihuahua in a studded collar. And don’t blame the bluff face on jumping through crash-test hoops: EuroNCAP didn’t much care for the Ecosport’s lack of compassion for pedestrians (58% score), though occupants are very well looked after (93% score).

The car’s profile is unsettled by the undersized alloys, which are dwarfed by the slabby sides, and the enormous spare wheel cover tacked onto the tailgate for original Toyota RAV4-aping off-road pretensions.

The name is awkward too. You’d imagine it to be pronounced ‘eee-koh-sport’, just like the engine range is ‘eee-koh-boost’. But Ford would prefer you called it ‘echo-sport’.

Ouch. What’s it like inside?

Hmmm. Fiesta-esque, and that’s a mixed bag. Ford’s cabin materials have come on in leaps and bounds in recent models, and even though it’s still not up at head-and-shoulders level alongside VW, Ford is snapping at the German’s heels.

However, as attractive as the Ecosport’s angular dial binnacles and vents are, the main infotainment panel uses the same old mobile phone-inspired interface we’ve been coming to terms with since 2008, and familiarity is breeding contempt, not acceptance. Well screwed together it may be, but the Ecosport is somewhat dingy and grey, and too button-heavy. Porsche Panamera drivers will feel at home, perhaps, what with more buttons being present than at Jenson’s birthday party.

I can live with the looks. Is it practical?

Now the Ecosport fights back. Not only are the seats comfortable, but that boxy profile makes for excellent cabin space front and rear for such a short car. You can tilt the rear backrests to vary passenger comfort and bootspace, with a maximum of 375 litres on hand as a five-seater, and 1238l once the back row is folded.

Those figures match the Renault Captur, trounce the Nissan Juke, but lose out to the bigger Vauxhall Mokka. Incidentally, both the Mokka and Ecosport can feel a touch claustrophobic inside despite what the tape measure says – blame fashionably high beltlines and slim windows for the lack of what estate agents call ‘natural light pathways’.

Black marking the Ecosport’s copy book is the tailgate. It’s a left-hinged door, carrying that huge spare wheel housing. Not only is it heavy, but in the left-lane-driving UK, the ’gate opens towards the pavement.

There’s plenty of on-board kit, though: there are a refreshingly simple two trim levels for the Ecosport. ‘Titanium’ spec offers 16in alloys, foglights, keyless go, climate control, tyre pressure-monitoring, and electric windows. Upgrading to ‘Titanium X’ brings 17in wheels, auto lights, mirrors and wipers, and cruise control. Sat-nav and rear parking sensors are still optional, however. With prices ranging from £14,995 to £16,495, the Ecosport stacks up well value-wise, compared to the more generously equipped Nissan Juke models, which cost around £17,000.

Surely like most Fords, the Ecosport comes good when you drive it…?

Like the Fiesta, the Ecosport’s steering lacks response around the straight-ahead, but weights up nicely from a quarter turn of lock onwards. Unlike the Fiesta, you won’t be chucking the Ecosport through bends, though. Ford’s gone for a rather soft suspension set-up, prioritising ride comfort and refinement (which is very strong) over handling dynamism (which isn’t).

We’ve often criticised carmakers for handing down wannabe ‘sporty’ cars that are spoiled by stiff suspension, with no discernible handling benefit, so the Ecosport’s setup sounds like manna from heaven. However, being a Blue Oval product, it does smack of disappointment – what Ford’s done so well since the original Ka and Focus of the 1990s is to team compliant suspension with agility and poise. The tall-toes Ecosport naturally warranted some compromise (it’s 140mm taller than the Fiesta, don’t forget) but we expected a better steer than this – something more like the Kuga, in fact.

What’s the pick of the engine range?

The engine that’ll suck up 35% of all Ecosport sales is also the best of the bunch. It’s a 1.5-litre turbodiesel: its 98bhp is adequate, but 151lb ft from 1750rpm squirts the Ecosport along keenly, despite the 14sec 0-62mph time. It starts to struggle in fast motorway cruising, but as an about-town runabout, the 1.5 TDCi is well up to the task. It’s best when teamed with a typically slick Ford manual gearbox.

With Ford claiming more than 60mpg, it should be the cheapest Ecosport to run, too. The three-pot petrol engine also makes an appearance in the range, but as CAR exposed when we sampled the 99bhp motor in the Fiesta , it struggles to achieve half of its claimed economy, languishing in the mid-thirties.

The Ford Ecosport rockets the UK’s favourite carmaker into the heart of the fastest-growing UK car market segment, so it’d be a shock to see it not sell strongly. However, that’s not to say we think it deserves to.

We’re disappointed with the Ecosport’s unenthusiastic handling, and gripes about Ford’s exterior and interior design remain. Our pick of the compact crossovers remains the Renault Captur for the fashionistas, and Nissan’s cramped-but-quirky Juke as a driver’s car.

What's the used ford ecosport hatchback like.

The truly international Ford Ecosport is a compact SUV designed in Brazil and built in India and sold worldwide by what is essentially an American company.

It stands out in a class of heavily stylised cars by being shorter and taller than the norm, with tonka-toy looks and a side-hinged rear tailgate with an external covered spare wheel only adding to its rugged appeal. The car received a major redesign in 2018, incorporating a new nose and grille similar to the firm’s larger SUVs, the Kuga and the Edge .

Underneath is more conventional fare, with similar engines and mechanicals to the Fiesta , B-Max and Tourneo Connect cars. The engine line-up is usefully simple, with four options to choose from: a 113bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol, an 89bhp (bo0sted to 94bhp in 2015) 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel and the UK-designed 123bhp 1.0-litre, three-pot EcoBoost engine. To complete the range, and only available with the Titanium S trim, is a 138bhp 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine. The facelifted model keeps the 123bhp and 138bhp 1.0-litre Ecoboost engines and adds 99bhp and 123bhp version of the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel to the range.

What Car? has a buying service

Trim levels start with the entry-level Zetec, which comes with a long list of standard equipment, including a DAB radio, two USB sockets, 16in alloy wheels, air-con and electric front and rear windows. Next-level Titanium models get 17in alloys, built-in sat-nav, a rear-view camera, partial leather seats, keyless start, climate and cruise control, as well as automatic headlights and wipers. Meanwhile, the range-topping ST-Line gets sports suspension and various sports-inspired styling.

On the road, the Ecosport is not a sparkling performer with any of the engine options. The 1.0-litre engines never feel quick and the diesel option adds unwanted noise and not much more in the way of grunt. However, given that we found the braking to be surprisingly poor, that shortage of straight-line speed is perhaps just as well.

After the engines, the car’s ride is its most disappointing aspect, with the Ecosport thumping into potholes and bouncing over road irregularities, all the while proving fidgety and unsettled over most of the UK’s roads. The Ecosport handles well at lower speeds, but feels a little insecure at higher ones. It’s safe, but remarkably uninspiring.

Inside, the driving position is commanding, and the quality of the later cars seems to have improved on that of the earlier ones. The dashboard is based on the latest Fiesta’s, and most of the major controls are easy to use on the move. A 6.5in colour touchscreen is standard, while the smarter Titanium and ST-Line models get an 8.0in version. Both respond quickly and come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, although one or two rivals on-screen graphics are slightly sharper.

Up front there’s enough space, but the Ecosport is a narrow car, and that hinders three people seating abreast in the rear for any length of time. Even more irritating is the small boot, accessed via a side-hinged tailgate.

Ownership cost

What used ford ecosport hatchback will i get for my budget.

To join the Ecosport club you’ll need around £6000, at the time of writing. This will buy you an early car with an average mileage for the year and a full service history, bought from an independent dealer or a trader. Up the money to around £8000 and you’ll net a good 2016 car that satisfies the same criteria. Expect to pay £11,000 for a facelifted example from late 2018.

How much does it cost to run a Ford Ecosport hatchback?

The latest post-facelift version of the 1.5 TDCi diesel is the most economical engine, with a claimed average fuel consumption figure of 64.2mpg. Choose one of the 1.0 Ecoboost engines and the best-performing can claim an average figure of 52.3mpg. Early versions fitted with an automatic gearbox came exclusively with a 1.5-litre petrol that only manages 44.8mpg.

CO2 emissions

Go for a 95bhp 1.5 diesel and you'll have an Ecosport with the lowest CO2 emissions of 115g/km; the earlier 89bhp model puts out 120g/km. The best petrol is the 1.0 Ecoboost with 125g/km, while the worst performer is the 1.5 petrol because it emits 149g/km.

Car tax (VED)

Cars registered before the tax changes of April 2017 will be relatively cheap in VED road tax, while those registered after will all be charged at the new unified rate. You can find out more about road tax costs here .

Servicing costs

A Ford service plan for the Ecosport includes three services over three years and 60,000 miles, as well as the Ford Assistance breakdown plan. Payments can be budgeted by direct debit. Alternatively, examples that are outside of the manufacturer's warranty period can qualify for cheaper Ford Essential servicing that starts from £169 per visit.

Our recommendations

Which used ford ecosport hatchback should i buy.

On the whole, the petrol engines are smoother and more refined than the diesel option, so unless you do lots of miles we’d try to seek out the 1.0 Ecoboost engine, preferably the 123bhp version.

Specification

Zetec trim is well equipped as standard, and is the one we’d look out for. We'd recommend going for a 2018 example though because a number of improvements were made that makes the Ecosport a more pleasant ownership prospect.

Our favourite Ford Ecosport: 1.0 Ecoboost 125 Zetec

Alternatives

What alternatives should i consider to a used ford ecosport hatchback.

The Nissan Qashqai is the iconic SUV that kickstarted the revolution. It’s still great today, with its chunky looks, raised driving position, practical and classy interior, comfortable ride, excellent refinement and low running costs.

The Suzuki Vitara is another highly competent small SUV that shows the Ecosport how it’s done when it comes to driving. It’s also got a practical interior and is well equipped, and used examples are looking good value.

Retrofitting Cruise Control - Guide

Hi guys, I have just successfully fitted cruise control to my 2016 ecosport.  Couldn’t find a guide so thought I would write one!

It’s relatively easy.  Tools required:

T15 torx (long one)

T55 torx and ratchet

Needlenose pliers

Parts required:

Relacement steering wheel with cruise control wiring already in (I used a fiesta ST one)

Firstly you need to disconnect the battery and wait 30 mins, this is so no residual charge sets the airbag off.

Then use the T15 torx to poke through the holes to release the airbag spring clips.  You will find these holes either side of the steering wheel behind the bezel. You are looking for a line, and you just push the T15 against it and it pokes through.

Once both clips are released you pull the airbag forwards and disconnect the yellow connector in the middle and the 2 spade connectors.  Once this is done you put the airbag to one side.

Now you disconnect the wiring loom from the clockspring.

Undo the steering wheel securing bolt with the T55 torx and remove.

Refitting is the same but in reverse.

Now with forscan you need to activate the cruise control in the IPC and BCM modules.

Once this is done you should have cruise control (this is how it worked for me).

Sorry no pics as I was figuring it out!

Ford EcoSport 2014 Review

Ford EcoSport Titanium Road Test

Fords contribution to the compact crossover segment boasts a myriad of features, however, for almost $30,000 on the road the top-spec Titanium has a lot to live up to. While the EcoSport excelled in some areas, it did have its shortfalls, which may disappoint those wanting real value for money.

As Australia’s compact crossover segment becomes more competitive, I was eager to see what Ford could bring to the table.

The Indian-designed and built EcoSport lines up against with some pretty dominant players, including the Holden Trax, Suzuki S-Cross and Peugeot 2008, to name just a few.

The crux of the EcoSport is its blend of economy, space and amenity, or so it is said. It’s a vehicle for those chasing something bigger than a light hatch, but smaller – and less expensive to own – than a traditional small SUV.

The EcoSport brings a fresh, youthful look to the Ford line-up. This city runabout boasts plenty of curves, a bold front-end and plenty of edgy, chrome accents.

Aesthetics are of course subjective, however, one can’t deny that obvious cost cutting has been a priority here, as is evidenced by the cold, hard plastic interior that I was greeted with upon my first drive.

The leather faced seat trims with contrasting stitching were an elegant touch that made me feel a little better about the poorly joined panels and persistent lack of any soft-touch finishes.

In saying this, the high driving position was fantastic, along with the overall height of the vehicle which was very well received by my taller passengers.

Both passenger and drivers seats were relatively comfortable, with the added bonus of adjustable lumbar support for the driver

I was impressed by the sheer abundance of storage spaces throughout the EcoSport; in fact Ford boasts that the car has 20 storage compartments…not bad!

Space was not only limited to the cabin, with the cargo compartment allowing for plenty of groceries and other essentials.

As I was moving house at the time of this road test, I was quick to fold down the seats, which made room for four large boxes. The best part being that due to its height, ergonomically getting boxes in and out of the back was a cinch.

The only trouble I had in this department was that the tailgate is designed for the left-hand drive market – meaning it opens out into traffic. Be sure to keep this in mind when you’re parallel parking…

Depending on how much of a technology lover you are, you may or may not be in love with the busy dash and control panel that the EcoSport encompasses.

In a word, the cockpit was overwhelming, namely the dash and centre control panel. If you’re into simplicity, allow yourself time to get to know the car before you set off on your test drive.

I found it took me longer than usual to connect my Bluetooth in comparison to other vehicles I’ve driven. This was primarily because it was difficult to navigate the settings function in the entertainment unit – I’ll admit I did give up after a few attempts.

With all the hype and advertising surrounding Fords partnership with Microsoft’s SYNC, I was expecting smooth, simple and most of all responsive technology. Unfortunately, I didn’t get smooth, or simple, and I really didn’t get responsive. I tried giving instructions verbally to the SYNC several times during my time with the EcoSport, and either it didn’t understand me or I didn’t understand it.

The concept of SYNC and what Ford has tried to achieve here has been done before, and perfected – particularly in relation to simply playing music via Bluetooth connectivity to your phone. It is as though Ford have tried to reinvent the wheel here, when it wasn’t in need of fixing in the first place.

Once I got to know my way around the inside of the EcoSport, it was time to take it for a spin – and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised.

As mentioned earlier in this review, the high driving position felt great, and allowed for fairly good visibility across most angles.

Despite a little low gear engine lag, which in turn created a little more noise from under the bonnet than I'd like, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine did provide adequate punch when asked to accelerate quickly on the freeway.

The ride and handling that the EcoSport presented was impressive considering some of its other shortfalls. Throughout my time driving the car I experienced minimal body roll through corners with the car feeling stable even when I gave it a little more throttle around bends.

I did find the suspension to be a little on the hard side, however, it certainly didn’t put me off the overall feel of the car.

The turning circle was equally as impressive as the ride, being well on par with a compact hatch coming in at a decent 10.6 metres. I found it easy to get in and out of tight spaces and parallel parking was a breeze.

Fuel economy read fairly close to the tested claims of 5.7L/100km, with my combined driving leaving me at an average of 6.2 – although when utilising the cruise control on the freeway I found the reading was consistently closer to 6.0L/100km (according to the trip computer).

The EcoSport, particularly in the variant tested, is worth considering if you’re after something that offers the economy and convenience of a small car, with higher, more secure driving feel of a small SUV... and have the cash to splash.

What it lacks in materials quality and refinement, it makes up for with a reliable, fun ride and better than expected handling.

Consider this along with a three-year/100,000km warranty and Fords’ capped-priced servicing and you may find yourself the owner of a new breed of crossover vehicle.

2014 Ford EcoSport Titanium pricing and specifications: Price: $27,790 (plus on-road costs) Engine: 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol Output: 82kW/140Nm Transmission: Six-speed automatic Fuel: 6.5L/100km (ADR Combined) CO2: 154g/km (ADR Combined) Safety Rating: Five-star ANCAP

What we liked: >> Good ride/handling compromise >> Plenty of oddment storage >> Decent fuel economy

Not so much: >> Dated infotainment system >> Sub-par interior trim >> Slight step-off lag

Adaptive cruise control?

Hdale85

  • Add to quote

Hi we just picked up a 2019 Titanium yesterday and I was wondering, was adaptive cruise control not an option on these? We seem to pretty much have every other option including a sunroof and b&o so I was surprised we didn't have adaptive cruise control? I know on my F-150 it was possible to add it on with forscan so was thinking I could do that with this but maybe not if it wasn't even available.

Darksider

No, its not available on the Ecosport

Well darn that sucks.

Network Message Chart

Network Input Messages - Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)

Network Input Messages - Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Cruise Control Operation

The cruise control functions include:

  • turning on the cruise control system.
  • setting and maintaining the desired vehicle speed.
  • accelerating the vehicle speed.
  • coasting down to a lower speed.
  • resuming the prior vehicle speed.
  • turning off the cruise control system.

Hardwired inputs to the PCM are:

  • Digital TR sensor
  • BPP switch assembly (contains the stoplamp switch and cruise control deactivator switch)
  • Clutch pedal cruise control deactivator switch (if equipped)

Hardwired outputs of the PCM are:

  • Electronic Throttle Body (ETB) command

The vehicle speed is controlled by the PCM through the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) subsystem.

The cruise control system provides self-diagnostics. Cruise control is disabled anytime an error is detected in the system. No IPC indicator or message center messages are displayed when faults occur. Fault codes are logged by the PCM or SCCM .

An Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system fault also causes the cruise control system to be disabled. In this case, an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator is displayed.

Additionally, certain conditions cause the cruise control system to deactivate:

  • Transmission gear selector is placed into a position other than D or OD
  • Cruise control set speed is overridden with the accelerator pedal for a period longer than 5 minutes
  • Cruise control switch is pressed or stuck longer than 2 minutes
  • Clutch pedal depressed (if equipped)

Cruise Control Indicator

The cruise control indicator, located in the IPC , illuminates to indicate the cruise control system is active.

Steering Wheel Switch Function

Cruise control switch inputs are received by the SCCM and sent to the GWM on the HS-CAN . The GWM then sends the switch information to the PCM .

Pressing and releasing the ON/OFF switch turns the cruise control system on. Pressing up (SET+) or down (SET-) on the SET switch while the vehicle is traveling at the desired speed activates the cruise control system.

While the cruise control system is active, applying the brake pedal or pressing the CAN/RES switch puts the cruise control system into standby mode. Pressing the CAN/RES switch when the cruise control system is in standby mode causes the vehicle to accelerate to the last set speed. Resume does not function if the ON/OFF switch is pressed, the ignition is cycled OFF or if the current vehicle speed is below the minimum operational speed.

Pressing the SET switch up or down while in the active mode increases or decreases the maintained vehicle speed by 1.6 kmh (1 mph) per press. If the respective switch is pressed and held, the vehicle speed continues to accelerate or decelerate until the switch is released.

Pressing and releasing the ON/OFF switch while the cruise control is active or the ignition is cycled OFF, turns the cruise control system off.

Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) Operation

The Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) feature is mutually exclusive of the cruise control system. The feature allows the driver to set a desired speed that the vehicle cannot exceed during normal driving conditions. Unlike cruise control, the vehicle slows down when the accelerator pedal is released.

Pressing the Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) switch (LIM) on the steering wheel turns the Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) feature on and off. Pressing the cruise control switch (SET+) and (SET-) buttons selects the desired speed limit. Any speed can be selected within the minimum to maximum range of 30 kph (18 mph) to 180 kph (112 mph). The speed selection is indicated in the instrument cluster.

Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) inputs are received by the SCCM and sent to the GWM on the HS-CAN . The GWM sends the switch information to the PCM on the HS-CAN indicating the system is activated.

The front wheel speed sensors monitor the vehicle speed. When the vehicle reaches the selected set speed, the PCM limits the amount of fuel delivered to the engine, preventing the vehicle from traveling beyond the set speed.

The Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) speed limit can be overridden, without pressing the steering wheel switch or by pressing the accelerator pedal to 90% of travel. The speed limit automatically resumes when the accelerator pedal is released and the vehicle slows down to below the set speed limit. If the system is not overridden and the set speed limit is exceeded, an audible chime sounds and a message displays in the instrument cluster.

The Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL) operates exclusive of the cruise control and is not connected to the brakes or the clutch (if equipped). Applying the brake pedal or clutch pedal does not override or deactivate the Adjustable Speed Limiter (ASL).

Component Description

Steering Wheel Switches

The cruise control steering wheel mounted switches are momentary contact switches. Each steering wheel switch function corresponds to a specific resistance value. The SCCM sends out a 5-volt reference voltage to the steering wheel switch and monitors the voltage when a switch is pressed. The voltage varies depending upon the resistance of the specific switch pressed, indicating which switch is pressed.

Brake Switch

When the brake pedal is applied, an electrical signal from the stoplamp circuit to the PCM deactivates the cruise control system. Under increased brake pedal effort, the cruise control deactivator switch opens and removes the ground signal from the PCM input circuit releasing the throttle, immediately deactivating the cruise control system.

Clutch Switch

Vehicles equipped with a manual transmission have an additional clutch pedal cruise control deactivator switch. The clutch pedal cruise control deactivator switch is a normally open switch with the clutch pedal released. When the clutch pedal is pressed, an electrical signal is sent from the clutch pedal speed control deactivator switch circuit to the PCM which deactivates the cruise control system.

Check out Moscow’s NEW electric river trams (PHOTOS)

Water transportation has become another sector for the eco-friendly improvements the Moscow government is implementing. And it means business. On July 15, 2021, on the dock of Moscow’s ‘Zaryadye’ park, mayor Sergey Sobyanin was shown the first model of the upcoming river cruise boat.

The model of the electrical boat with panoramic windows measures 22 meters in length. The river tram - as Muscovites call them - has a passenger capacity of 42, including two disabled seats. The trams will also get cutting edge info panels, USB docking stations, Wi-Fi, spaces for scooters and bicycles, as well as chairs and desks for working on the go. The boats will be available all year round, according to ‘Mosgortrans’, the regional transport agency.

Passengers will be able to pay with their ‘Troika’ public transport card, credit cards or bank cards.

The main clientele targeted are people living in Moscow’s river districts - the upcoming trams will shorten their travel time in comparison to buses and other transportation by five times, Mosgortrans stated.

As the river trams are being rolled out, Moscow docks will also see mini-stations, some of which will also be outfitted with charging docks for speed-charging the boats.

Moscow is set to announce the start of the tender for construction and supply in September 2021. The first trams are scheduled to launch in June 2022 on two routes - from Kievskaya Station, through Moscow City, into Fili; and from ZIL to Pechatniki.

“Two full-scale routes will be created in 2022-2023, serviced by 20 river trams and a number of river stations. We’ll continue to develop them further if they prove to be popular with the citizens,” the Moscow mayor said .
