7 awesome virtual tours of London museums

The british museum virtual tour.

The British Museum has put together an incredible virtual experience. Thanks to Google Arts & Culture you can explore pretty much everything the museum has to offer, and at your own pace.

Just click on any of the pictures of stories, collections or items, and you will see a more close up photo of that item, as well as relevant information and history. You can also do a Google Street View tour of the courtyard and interior of the British Museum.

My personal favourite is the interactive The Museum of the World experience. Here you can learn about individual artefacts through a global timeline.

The Tate Modern 360 tour

The Tate Modern put together a 360 tour hosted by Nick Grimshaw, presenter of Radio 1, and Frances Morris, director of the Tate Modern.

Throughout the video you can listen to them talking about and explaining some of the art pieces, while using your controller to turn around and get a 360 view of the rooms.

It’s a really cool virtual tour, which allows you to explore some of the most popular art pieces of the Tate, while learning about them from Frances Morris herself. It’s not every day that you get a museum director giving you a tour!

Virtual tour of the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum also has a virtual tour hosted through Google Arts & Culture. However it doesn’t go into as much detail as the British Museum with specific artefacts that you can click on to learn more.

It’s still really cool though since you can explore every single room of the museum with a Google Street View interface. You can get closer to specific pieces, turn around and get a 360 view.

It’s my personal favourite museum in London and I’m glad you can get such a detailed virtual tour of it.

Google Street View view of the Natural History Museum

Science Museum virtual tours

The Science Museum is my second favourite museum in London after the Natural History Museum. Their huge space exhibition has always fascinated me.

I love their virtual experience also because it’s very varied. They over a Google Street View of their museum spaces, so that you can click through and see all the different rooms and exhibitions.

They also offer curator gallery guides. Here you can select specific exhibitions and watch videos by the museum curators, where they go into more detail about each of them.

The National Portrait Gallery 360 virtual tours

The National Portrait Gallery offers 360 virtual tours of all its main galleries. Just select the gallery you want to explore and you will get a 360 view of it.

You can zoom in and get up close to the portraits. While the National Portrait Gallery wouldn’t be my first choice if I had to pick a London museum to explore, the fact that I can tour it from the comfort of my bedroom makes it very appealing.

360 view of Weldon Galleries at the National Portrait Gallery

Virtual tour of the Courtauld Gallery

The Courtald Gallery is another museum that uses a Google Street View type of interface. You can freely roam around the rooms of the various rooms of the museum and zoom up close to specific paintings.

You can also choose specific rooms from a sidebar menu. Here you will find famous pieces like Vincent Van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear .

Virtual tour of Courtauld Galleries

Houses of Parliament virtual tour

You can do a virtual tour of the Houses of Parliament while learning about the main interest points. You can either select the room you want to explore from the drop down menu, or click your way there through the interactive map.

There are also big “i” buttons that, once you click on them, will give you information about the room in general, or about specific hotspots in those rooms. This virtual tour is a great way to tick off one of the main London bucket list experiences.

How to virtually tour the British museum from your very own home

We bring you a how-to on exploring the british museum without moving an inch from your sofa..

British Museum Building

As the UK eases out of lockdown into a new set of restrictions , with pubs reopening and restaurants welcoming back guests for outdoor wining and dining, we're still yet to see the re-opening of our favourite galleries and museums.

If you're anything like us then you're probably itching to take a tour around the likes of the British Museum, Buckingham Palace , or the Natural History Museum , and even some art galleries wouldn't go amiss - well, you can visit all of these spots, just virtually .

What is a virtual museum?

A virtual museum gives people an opportunity to explore the museum virtually, through a collection of digitally recorded images which allow you to navigate through the museum using full 360 degree photography, as well as a compilation of sound files, text documents and other data of historical, scientific, or cultural interest conveyed through electronic media.

How to virtually tour the British Museum

One of the worlds' oldest national public museums - the British Museum , is a public institution dedicated to human history, art and culture.

It's home to art collections, literature, and other artefacts that all tell a tale on human history throughout the world.

1. Take a tour with google street view

Google street provides an opportunity to virtually explore more than 60 galleries, all from the comfort of your own sofa. It's easy to use, simple to navigate and you won't face any annoyance with people getting in your way because it's a virtual tour catered just for you- go at your own pace using this bespoke tour service, and gain a genuine cultural insight and be blissfully educated.

King's library British Museum with The Piranesi Vase in view

Why not see a vast array of beautiful textiles from the African gallery or stone sculptures from the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery. The sights to witness here are truly endless.

Jump immediately to the King's Library.

2. Explore the British Museums' online galleries

'Reclining figure and red rocks' by Henry Moore (1898-1986)

On the British Museum website there are virtual galleries where you can peruse and delve deep into the extensive prints, paintings and drawing collections to see a vast range of classics, or new and spirited contemporary pieces.

We won't give too much away but it truly is worth feasting your eyes on.

3. Submerge yourself with insightful audio info

Decorative lantern ('fanoo') a historical piece hung up to celebrate the Holy month of Ramadan

Brought to Apple Music and YouTube Music is the Museum Curators' introduction to each collection/ gallery.

Having this sort of audio information right at our fingertips is something to be hugely grateful for - it provides us with an on-demand opportunity to get expert insight and knowledge into the collections and pieces that lay day and night within the museum.

It's remarkably fascinating.

4. Keep up to date and check for events!

The British Museum is bound to hold countless events in the upcoming future - both in person when museums reopen in May, and virtually to experience an in-depth education on specific topics.

Be sure to check their website frequently for updates .

How it works, how do i make a booking.

All Virtual Visits are free.

Only bookings made directly by UK schools will be accepted. We don't accept bookings from third parties.

Before you book your Virtual Visit online, please ensure you have read the privacy policy and have the following information ready:

  • Your school address
  • Your school email address and phone number
  • Your choice of workshop
  • Your group's access requirements

Booking confirmation should be within two weeks. Book now

How do I book multiple classes?

You can book multiple dates and times for different classes or all your classes can join at the same date and time.

As each Virtual Visit is taught live and is interactive, the fewer the number of classes attending each session, the greater the likelihood of our experts being able to engage directly with more individual students.

If you'd like to make bookings for multiple dates and times, these must be booked separately.

To make it easier for you to manage your bookings, you can assign different teachers to different bookings using their professional contact details when booking.

What happens during your Virtual Visit?

You'll join the meeting on the video conferencing platform Zoom, using the details sent to you by email after your booking confirmation. If your students are joining from multiple locations, you can share these details with them. A British Museum expert will be in the Museum and will lead the live workshop. You and your students will be the only participants during the workshop, it's just for you.

At least one teacher will need to remain present during the workshop, either in your physical classroom or as a participant on the call if students are joining from multiple locations. If at any point our staff believe the teacher is no longer present, they will end the event as we can no longer adhere to the Museum's safeguarding policy.

How do you connect your class to the Museum?

If students are learning in your classroom, you'll need:

  • A computer with the ability to join a meeting on Zoom. This is how we'll connect your classroom to the Museum.
  • A smartboard, large screen or projector connected to the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will see the live video.
  • Speakers, often built into smartboard, screens and projectors connected to the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will hear the live video.
  • A webcam connected or built into the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will be visible to the Museum's expert.
  • A microphone connected or built into the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will be heard by the Museum's expert.

You can test all of the above equipment prior to booking by joining a test Zoom meeting. Instructions are available on Zoom's website .

Students learning remotely will each need a computer with the ability to join a meeting on the video conferencing platform Zoom.

How do I cancel or amend my booking?

If you're not able to attend a session you must inform the Box Office at least 14 days before the session date.

For further information see the  cancelling your booking section of our terms of use .

What safety measures are in place?

In addition to the Privacy policy and the Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults policy , the Museum also has a risk assessment for Virtual Visits.

How can these workshops be tailored for specific access requirements?

We aim to make our workshops as accessible as possible, for example:

  • We ensure our staff speak clearly and slowly
  • We provide session support notes in advance
  • We send all worksheets in advance so they can be printed as required

If you have specific access requirements for your group, you can communicate these when booking, and we we'll endeavour to meet them.

How do your students take part in the online quiz?

You'll need:

  • One or more devices (smartphone, tablet or computer) in addition to the computer running Zoom. This can work with up to one device per student or even only one device for the whole class. We recommend as many as possible.
  • The ability to open Kahoot on devices. This is how students will answer during the interactive quiz. We recommend opening this link on all devices prior to the start of the workshop.

You can test Kahoot with your students by doing this short Pre-Virtual Visit Quiz  with them.

What happens to my data?

  • Personal data which is provided by you as part of your booking will be held in accordance with our privacy policy  and will be securely deleted as soon as the purpose for which it has been collected has been fulfilled.
  • The British Museum will never take screen shots or make audio or visual recordings of any Virtual Visits without consent.
  • The Virtual Visit will be hosted using a video conferencing platform which is used under license by the British Museum. Your unique meeting invitation and passcode will be shared by email only with you. We won't share any of your personal data with the video conferencing platform and you may need to register with the platform in order to use the service. Any personal data which you provide to the platform in order to register will be held according to their terms and conditions and privacy policy. The British Museum will not have access to this information.

What happens after the workshop?

You'll be emailed an evaluation survey to the same address you used to book. Completing the survey is optional. Your feedback in the survey will help to develop and improve the workshops.

Feedback is greatly appreciated.

What can you do if your question is not answered here?

Contact the Box Office. If they can't answer your question directly, they should be able to pass your question onto someone who can.
