Military tax statements

Defense Finance Accounting Service recently announced the schedule that DFAS will release W-2s and other military tax forms, including Retiree Account Statements (RAS), Retiree 1099R and Annuitant 1099R forms, Form 1095 health insurance verification forms and other related tax forms .

The dates are staggered, so we have a list below covering the release dates. Tax forms for 2023 will be released starting mid-December 2023 and will continue through January 2024.

DFAS customers with myPay access will be able to retrieve their tax statements electronically up to two weeks sooner than those relying on regular mail delivery. This is good for those who want to file their taxes early and receive their refunds as soon as possible .

DFAS also encourages all customers to elect to receive digital tax forms because it is safer, faster and more secure than relying on the mail system. Digital tax forms are also a must for those who frequently travel or expect to be deployed during tax season.

Military Tax Forms Release Schedule

2023-2024 military tax forms will be available starting in mid-December

Military tax forms for the 2023 tax year (filed in April 2024) will be available starting in mid-December 2023 and will be released through January 2024, as they become available.

Here is the 2024 tax statement schedule for military members and civil service Department of Defense employees. Source – DFAS :

What About the Mailing Dates?

In previous years, DFAS also posted specific dates they anticipated these forms to be mailed. This year, DFAS has released only one date for those who elect to have tax statements mailed to their homes. DFAS states, “Tax statements sent through the U.S. Postal Service will be mailed no later than Jan. 31, 2024.”

However, DFAS recommends that everyone choose to receive their tax forms electronically, as they are available earlier and more securely than mail delivery. This also reduces the risk of identity theft .

myPay Security and Other Features

Mypay is secure.

myPay is a secure, web-based pay information system. One of the many benefits of this system is avoiding risks associated with identity theft. myPay has a series of security measures, with layers of defense against identity theft. The secure technology provided to myPay customers meets or exceeds security requirements used by private corporations worldwide.

Tax Statement Availability

The tax statements available through myPay are approved for use by the IRS and have several added benefits for myPay users. One is the ability to retrieve your military tax forms directly from myPay at any time during the year. The statements remain online to allow customers to view and print whenever it is convenient for them. This is especially important for service members who are TDY or deployed during the tax season.

Keep in mind that military members may be eligible for a free automatic tax extension if they were deployed during the previous year or during the current tax season. Be sure to read up on the details. And even though the extension is automatic, it’s a good idea to file for an extension to get it on the books with the IRS.

myPay Limited-Use Passwords

Another great feature is the use of restricted-access PINs, which allows users to have other family members, tax preparers or other trusted individuals view and print their tax statements without the ability to change any payment account information. The restricted-access PIN can be established after logging into a customer’s myPay account. For more information, see the FAQs on the myPay site.

Keep Permanent Copies of Your Military Tax Forms

Even though myPay stores a long-term copy of your military pay and tax forms, it’s always a good idea to keep permanent copies of your W-2s, 1099s, 1095s, leave and earning statements or retiree account statements and related forms. myPay does a good job of keeping an online repository of these forms, but technical issues have been known to happen. As with all military records , it’s a good idea to keep a permanent copy of your tax forms and other important documents.

I need my W2 from the Army?

Ryan Guina says

March 12, 2024 at 9:44 am

Rita, you should be able to download it from the myPay website. Please contact DFAS if you have separated from military service and can no longer access myPay. Best wishes!

February 2, 2024 at 5:27 pm

As an US Air Force retiree, I have not received my 1099-R in the mail yet. Today is Feb 2, 2024. There used to be a law where they had to be received in the mail by the end of January. Guess that has changed along with the postage increases

February 9, 2024 at 12:58 pm

Will, I believe organizations are required to mail them by January 31st. Either way, you should be able to log into your account to access your 1099-R. If not, contact DFAS customer for assistance. Best wishes!

Don't Forget Your Travel W-2 When Doing Your Taxes

Did you do a Personally Procured Move , also known as a PPM or DITY move, in 2020? If so, be sure that you have the special travel W-2 when you complete your 2020 income tax return.

Many military families are eager to file their tax returns when the IRS opens the filing season on Feb. 12, 2021, especially when they are expecting a refund. Having this special W-2 is an important part of having an accurate income tax return filing.

Reimbursements for PPM moves are taxable income to the military service member. As such, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service issues a W-2 for that money. It's found on MyPay, in the tax document section, under Travel/Miscellaneous Tax Statement (W-2).

Thankfully, that money isn't always taxable, or at least not all of it. Active-duty military service members moving on Permanent Change of Station orders are the only group of U.S. taxpayers who are still eligible to deduct moving expenses from their income tax calculations.

You'll use the information on the travel W-2 to calculate your deductible moving expenses on IRS Form 3903, Moving Expenses. The IRS has pretty specific rules on which moving expenses can be deducted. If you're unsure what you can include in your calculations, consider getting free assistance from your installation's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, or get advice from the Military OneSource MilTax program .

If you've been reimbursed more than your actual expenses, you must include the excess as income on Line 1 of your 1040 tax form. This may increase your tax liability for the year, which means you'll either get a smaller refund or owe a larger payment.

If qualified service members moving on PCS orders have actual moving expenses that exceed their reimbursement, they can deduct the excess costs on Line 13 of the 1040 tax form. This may decrease your tax liability for the year, which means you'll either get a larger refund or owe a smaller payment.

Either way, it's important that you report the income listed on your travel W-2. It has been reported to the IRS, and not showing it on your tax return may cause it to be flagged for review or even audit. Plus, if your expenses exceed your reimbursement, you want to get the benefit of that moving expense deduction.

If you don't know that it exists, it's easy to miss the travel W-2. The first time I saw one, I had no idea what it was or what to do with it. We ended up just adding it to our taxable income and paying full taxes on it. Be smarter than me, and calculate your actual moving expenses so that your tax return will be as accurate as possible, and you won't have to pay taxes on the full amount of your reimbursement.

PCS: Reimbursable Relocation Income Tax

Relocation Income Tax Allowance (RITA) is intended to reimburse you for substantially all of the additional federal, state, and local income taxed incurred as a result of reimbursement or payment of certain travel and transportation expenses and PCS allowances that are not excludable from gross income for Federal income tax purposes.

Taxable reimbursements include:

  • All payments for house hunting trips
  • Temporary quarters
  • Meals for en route travel
  • Miscellaneous expenses
  • HHG Storage more than 30 days
  • The sale of the old residence
  • The purchase of a new residence
  • Lease expenses
  • The relocation income tax allowance
  • Third party payments are also considered income--for example, if the government pays a moving company $1,000 for the second 30 days of storage on household goods, that payment is considered income to the employee.

Non-Taxable reimbursements include:

  • HHG shipment
  • HHG storage for the first 30 days
  • En route travel (lodging and transportation, to include government issued airline tickets)

The taxable reimbursements are taxable to you in the calendar year in which you are reimbursed, not the year the expense is incurred. A PCS W-2 will be issued by the paying travel office by Jan. 31 of the year following the year of the reimbursement.

Withholding Tax Allowance Each time covered reimbursements are paid, a withholding tax allowance (WTA) is computed to reimburse you for Federal taxed paid on these covered reimbursements. WTA is a derived advance against RITA and is subtracted from any RITA allowance.
