Top 6 Sci-Fi TV Shows Like Star Trek

The original Star Trek series was undoubtedly the first of its kind, a show that dared to “ boldly go where no man has gone before. ” And the world instantly fell in love with Captain Kirk and his crew as they went from one adventure to another. Today, Star Trek has evolved into a franchise that has gone on for over 50 years, spanning over 900 episodes and 13 movies.

But when you have a genre-defining show like Star Trek , it’s never enough. So if you’ve binged through all of it and still find yourself craving some more intergalactic adventures, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are six sci-fi TV shows like Star Trek that will certainly help you scratch that itch:

1. The Orville

Cast of The Orville

As Star Trek went on, it began to shift its focus, leaning more into the action and visual spectacle like Star Wars . That’s why, In 2017, Seth MacFarlane released The Orville as his love letter to the golden days of Star Trek . It’s a beautiful homage with loads of references to classic Star Trek to look out for. What sets The Orville apart is its crew — it’s a goofy set of characters with an edgier sense of humor that’s far from the prim and proper characters of Star Trek . Almost every cast member has a background in comedy, and it shines through in the show’s laid-back comedic backdrop.

2. Babylon 5

Babylon 5 Picture

Babylon 5 is a space opera that’s more focused on politics and diplomacy. It’s a bit like if the Enterprise had a permanent posting at Deep Space Nine. So, if you’re a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan, you’ll probably love Babylon 5 . The crew of Babylon 5 is also far from the perfect altruists we see in Star Trek . They’re flawed, imperfect, and they often butt heads. And the tech in Babylon 5 isn’t a magical fix-all solution like in Star Trek ; it’s more primitive, used as a tool as part of a larger solution rather than serving as the band-aid for every problem.

Firefly Show

If Star Trek was a Western, it would be Firefly . Directed by Joss Whedon , Firefly is set 500 years into the future, where, after a universal civil war, a bunch of ragtag misfits aboard a small spaceship will take any job as long as it puts food on the table. You can follow it up with Serenity , a movie set in the Firefly universe , which wraps up the plot points left hanging in the show. And because the story just spans a single season and a movie, Firefly is the perfect show if you’re looking to quickly binge a sci-fi TV show like Star Trek.

4. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Legends of Tomorrow Season 4

Set in the CW Arrowverse, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow takes characters that are part of a larger universe and puts them aboard the Waverider, the show’s very own version of the Enterprise. The difference is that while the Star Trek crew usually visits new planets, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow explores new timelines, with the heroes trying to fix history. The show finds fun ways of throwing references to iconic historical and pop culture moments. In Season 5, Episode 14, “The One Where We’re Trapped on TV,” the show even did a one-to-one parody of Star Trek , with its characters trapped in a fake sci-fi TV show called “ Star Trip .”

5. Battlestar Galactica

Top 6 Sci-Fi TV Shows Like Star Trek

If you’re into Star Trek , you’ve probably heard of Battlestar Galactica . Both the original and the reboot are centered around a spaceship called Battlestar Galactica, leading the fleet carrying the last surviving humans in the universe. Unlike Star Trek , Battlestar Galactica isn’t about exploring space; it’s about surviving it. It’s gritty, intense, and all about making it through one day at a time. The big bad species of the show are called Cylons, reminiscent of the Borg from Star Trek , and they want to destroy humanity. They’re even scarier in the reboot because they can shapeshift into humans!

6. Farscape

Farscape cast

Farscape follows a NASA astronaut as he finds himself aboard a living spaceship called Moya. He finds a new home and friends on the spaceship as they fight to escape a fascist military organization called the Peacekeepers. What makes Farscape special is the side characters. Almost every character has an extremely well-fleshed-out storyline. In fact, it’s so good that it served as one of the biggest inspirations for James Gunn ’s  Guardians of the Galaxy .

Hulu's Star Trek-Like Sci-Fi Gem Is Now Streaming on Disney Plus

The Orville is must-see television for science fiction fans.

star trek like show on hulu

More people need to watch The Orville.

The Orville: New Horizons, the third season of Seth MacFarlane's sci-fi series, concluded last week on Hulu and makes its way to Disney Plus  on Wednesday. What began life as a parody of Star Trek has evolved into a show that expands on the ethical dilemmas and social commentary the iconic sci-fi series was known for.

Plus, it has the kind of laughs expected from the creator of Family Guy and American Dad. There's still that love of Star Trek in every episode, but The Orville's maturation makes me enjoy it more than the series that inspired it. Both Hulu and Disney Plus subscribers can watch all three seasons to see the evolution of the show.

The series is set in the 25th century and follows the adventures of the starship USS Orville, which gets its name from Orville Wright of the Wright brothers.

MacFarlane plays Capt. Ed Mercer, who leads the ship with his second-in-command and ex-wife, Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki). Like Star Trek, the crew is made up of humans and aliens exploring the far reaches of the galaxy, but its characters are more modern, with plenty of human (or alien) flaws and behaviors. They straddle the line between the almost flawless, erudite crew of the Enterprise in the original Star Trek series and The Next Generation, and the more gritty and foul-mouthed characters of Picard and Star Trek: Discovery .

Episodes focused on ethical dilemmas and commentary about modern issues are what made me a Star Trek fan, and they are what's won me over as a fan of The Orville. There's a sentiment about The Orville that fans put this way: "The Orville out Star Treks Star Trek."

This third season really exemplifies the saying, with episodes focused on ethical problems that aren't so easy to answer, in contrast to the original Star Trek and TNG, which often trod more lightly or tied up episodes with a clear decision. Like the Federation's Prime Directive in Star Trek, The Orville's Planetary Union has its own rules to not interfere with the customs of other civilizations, and those regulations are put to the test constantly.

A perfect example of this is the penultimate episode, Domino, where crew members develop a weapon that can easily annihilate an entire race that's been hostile to members of the Planetary Union. This leads to the question of how to use such a device and, as expected, there's turmoil over the ethics of the weapon, leading to another dilemma.

#TheOrville New Horizons is now streaming on @hulu . pic.twitter.com/NDSpAjZNwY — The Orville (@TheOrville) June 2, 2022

In another episode from season 3, Twice in a Lifetime, Lt. Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes) gets sent back in time to 2015 after a mishap on the ship. Earlier in the episode, he'd showed his interest in this time period by carrying around a replicated smartphone and showing it off to the crew. He ends up living in the past for 10 years before the crew can find him in 2025. Viewers learn the Planetary Union has regulations for time travel: Stay put, don't interact with anyone in the past and wait for rescue. Gordon breaks the rules, leading to a dilemma over whether to destroy this tainted timeline and create an entirely different future.

One ethical puzzle from an earlier season involves  Lt. Commander Bortus, who's part of the male-dominated Moclan race. In the first season, Bortus and his mate Klyden had a baby girl named Topa. What the crew found out is that the Moclan despise women so much that they change the sex of their girls, which Bortus and Klyden decide to do for Topa. The third season shows the ramifications of their decision on Bortus' family, the Orville's crew and in fact the whole Planetary Union. This scenario is similar to stories in The Next Generation, but not so much in the current batch of Star Trek shows.

For longtime Star Trek fans, the franchise holds an important place in our hearts. It always presented a brighter side of the future, where the world comes together for the betterment of humanity. But then the current iteration of the franchise seemed to view that aspect of the show as milquetoast, focusing on space battles instead of what fans really want: a future version of humanity solving problems not so different from what humans deal with today.

The Orville, however, has taken on this challenge. It gives viewers thought-provoking yet memorable scenarios that make viewers question their own morals and ethics, which is what a sci-fi fan should expect from a show about a utopian future. This made me a fan of The Orville, and it's also the reason I prefer the series over the current batch of Star Trek offerings. Hopefully, other people will come around to enjoying the show just as much.

The 33 Best Sci-Fi Shows to Watch Right Now on Apple TV+, Netflix, Amazon, and More

Sci-fi on a boat? Yep

instg.png

The latest entries on our list of the best sci-fi shows to watch come from the great minds of science-fiction: William Gibson, George Lucas, Baran bo Odar, and Jantje Friese. Okay, those last two may not be super familiar by name, but they created the Netflix series 1899 , a spooky, ocean-bound mind-bender just as confusing as their previous outing, Dark . Yes, it was canceled after one season, but an incomplete 1899 is still better than a complete bad show. If that's not your thing, then don't miss Disney+'s Andor and Prime Video's The Peripheral .

Below you'll find plenty of shows across various streaming platforms that are about future societies, clones, robots with feelings, galaxies far, far away, and even immortality. Our list of all the best sci-fi shows to watch right now covers several streaming services, including Netflix , Amazon , Hulu , HBO Max , Apple TV+ , and more.

The Newest Sci-Fi Shows

Aneurin Barnard, Emily Beecham, Andreas Pietschmann, 1899

Aneurin Barnard, Emily Beecham, Andreas Pietschmann, 1899

What it's about:  Passengers on board a ship headed from Europe to New York City in 1899 encounter some strange occurrences... and that's barely the beginning Why it's worth watching: We'll start with the disclaimer: Netflix canceled 1899 after one season. But for those not bothered by the prospect of an incomplete series, 1899 , from the creators of the German time-traveling series Dark , is worth the ride. It's a multicultural mystery box show built for many seasons of twists and turns, and the first season ends on a massive reveal that, in a way, if you squint hard enough, serves as a series finale. But it's the show's mood, look, and feel that sets it apart. Does it always make sense? No, but that's intentional. How many seasons:  1

Diego Luna, Andor

What it's about:  This prequel to Rogue One is set five years prior and follows a smuggler named Cassian Andor ( Diego Luna ) who becomes intertwined with the fledgling Rebel Alliance in the resistance fight against the Empire Why it's worth watching: The short answer is Andor is the best Star Wars television series (sorry Grogu!) ever made. And at the risk of offending everyone, part of that is because it's unlike anything else that Star Wars has done. It's a tense and gritty spy story about relatively unfamiliar characters, which is part of its accessibility. But it also injects a stark political message about authortarianism into Star Wars, making it a universally familiar premise that we can all get behind. How many seasons:  1

Gary Carr and Chloë Grace Moretz, The Peripheral

Gary Carr and Chloë Grace Moretz, The Peripheral

The Peripheral

What it's about:  A woman (Chloë Grace Moretz) who is a wiz at virtual reality gaming finds herself connected to another universe when she's got the goggles on Why it's worth watching: The Peripheral is based on William Gibson's 2014 book of the same name, and is executive produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of HBO's Westworld . It feels a bit similar to that series, as it flips back and forth between what's real and what's not and shares a similar aesthetic.  How many seasons:  1

For All Mankind

For All Mankind

What it's about:  The space race between America and Russia never ends — and goes beyond the Moon — in this alternate history drama Why it's worth watching: If you want to watch some historical fiction but also have an itch for science-fiction, For All Mankind is your one-stop shop. The show asks what would have happened if Russia landed on the Moon first and America kept pushing the space race well beyond the 1960s. The first two seasons cover lunar politics and the rush to establish a moonbase, while Season 3 puts boots on the Red Planet and adds a private space tourism company to the mix. How many seasons:  3

Ewan McGregor, Obi-Wan Kenobi

Ewan McGregor, Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan Kenobi

What it's about:  Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi gets his own series that bridges the prequel films with the original trilogy Why it's worth watching:   Obi-Wan Kenobi  picks up with the titular Jedi master ( Ewan McGregor , reprising his role) 10 years after the events of  Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith , and it also marks the return of  Hayden Christensen  as Anakin Skywalker. Rupert Friend stars as the Grand Inquisitor, the latest franchise villain with elaborate face makeup, and Moses Ingram plays Reva Sevander, another Jedi-hunting Inquisitor who uses her own methods to accomplish her goals. How many seasons:  1

Love, Death + Robots

Love, Death + Robots

What it's about:  Animated sci-fi shorts go all over the place Why it's worth watching:  David Fincher produces this collection of animated shorts that cover everything from sentient robots to massive man-eating sea crabs. Each short, which runs less than 20 minutes, features a unique animation style and original story. It's perfect for short attention spans. How many seasons:  3

Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

What it's about:  A prequel to the Original Series follows Captain Pike on the USS Enterprise Why it's worth watching:  It's always dangerous to dip into one of sci-fi's most revered franchises for a new take, but Paramount+ has had good success launching new Star Trek franchises, and Strange New Worlds might be the best of the bunch. Set a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series and emulating it, Strange New Worlds sees Kirk predecessor Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ) at the helm of the Enterprise with a young Spock ( Ethan Peck ), a total noob Nyota Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ), and the rest of his crew as they explore the universe in standalone episodes. How many seasons:  1

Angelique Cabral and Rosa Salazar, Undone

Angelique Cabral and Rosa Salazar, Undone

What it's about:  A woman with unique powers helps her deceased dad solve his own murder Why it's worth watching: This utterly unique animated series from the producers of BoJack Horseman stars  Rosa Salazar  as Alma, who discovers she has the power to move through space and time, an ability her dead father ( Bob Odenkirk ) helps her hone to find out how he was killed. It's animated through rotoscoping, where film is drawn over so the animation preserves actors' work, which it also uses to achieve Alma's glorious travels through the continuum. Emotional, funny, and mind-blowing, Undone is one of those rare gems that deserves to be on more people's watchlists. How many seasons:  2

220317-halo.jpg

What it's about:  A cybernetic super-soldier realizes he may not be a weapon for good Why it's worth watching: The long-awaited Halo adaptation finally arrives after wearing out its tires on a long, bumpy development road, but the end result is better than naysayers say it is. Pablo Schreiber suits up as Master Chief, uncovering an ancient alien weapon (the titular Halo), a human military using him as a pawn, and a group of hostile aliens that want him and all humans dead. It's got action AND butts.  How many seasons:  1

Adam Scott, Severance

Adam Scott, Severance

What it's about:  A company makes its employees divide their consciousnesses into their work selves and their home selves Why it's worth watching: The idea of a solid work-life balance gets taken to the max in this trippy, unique, and funny series in which workers at a strange company voluntarily have their minds severed so that their work-life is unaware of their personal life, and vice versa. Naturally, the company is up to no good, and as the employees begin to wonder more about their outside lives, things get very weird. The spectacular cast includes Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken.  How many seasons:  1

Alan Tudyk, Resident Alien

Alan Tudyk, Resident Alien

Resident Alien

What it's about: An alien visits Earth, assumes human form, and is mistaken for the town doctor... but his plan is to kill all humans. Why it's worth watching: Alan Tudyk . The science-fiction mainstay ( Firefly, Doom Patrol ) is at his most charming as an extra-terrestrial in disguise in this mystery comedy that's part small-town mystery, part procedural comedy. Based on a graphic novel series, Resident Alien runs on the threat of Harry (Tudyk) getting exposed as an invader, as well as the strange lessons he learns about these oddball humans. How many seasons:  2

Oats Studios Vol. 1

Oats Studios Vol. 1

What it's about:  A collection of short science-fiction films from filmmaker Neill Blomkamp Why it's worth watching: Blomkamp ( District 9 ) is one of sci-fi's great directors, combining raw action with desolate landscapes to create a moody atmosphere that jumps off the screen. This collection of shorts that span anywhere from 8 minutes to 30 minutes and genres from black comedy to doomsday apocalypses show off Oats Studios' tech and Blomkamp's ability to tell a tight story. It's like Black Mirror . How many seasons:  1

Lou Llobell, Foundation

Lou Llobell, Foundation

What it's about:  In the future, a galactic empire struggles to hold on to its power when a mathematician predicts its demise and a descent into dark ages. Why it's worth watching: An adaptation of Isaac Asimov's novels, Foundation is Apple TV+'s big-budget swing to get a genre drama to the masses, and it looks great. The story is a big task as well, as different characters are stationed on different planets and various ambitions create conflict with others. It's a sort of Game of Thrones in space, if you will. How many seasons:  1

Tom Hiddleston and Wunmi Mosaku, Loki

Tom Hiddleston and Wunmi Mosaku, Loki

What it's about:  What Loki got up to while  Avengers: Endgame was going on Why it's worth watching: Tom Hiddleston 's God of Mischief is back, and free from that pesky conscience, in Marvel's latest Disney+ series. This one is a crime thriller that follows the alternate version of Loki who stole the Tesseract in  Avengers: Endgame , an event that basically broke reality. Now he has to fix it. He's recruited by  Owen Wilson 's Mobius M. Mobius at the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA) to travel through history and correct the timeline he messed up. Forgive me for the blasphemy of comparing a Marvel series to a DC one, but it kinda sounds like Loki's  Legends of Tomorrow . How many seasons:  1

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, WandaVision

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, WandaVision

WandaVision

What it's about:  The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Scarlet Witch and Vision find themselves... trapped inside classic TV comedies? Why it's worth watching:  Better late than never, WandaVision is the first television show from the MCU, and represents the future of Disney+, which is kind of a big deal. For fans of Marvel, it's a must-see, soft-launching Phase 4 of the MCU and affecting the events of the upcoming movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . As for the show itself, it adds comedic dimension to stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany while a slowly unfolding mystery keeps things captivating.  How many seasons:  1

The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian

What it's about: A bounty hunter zips about the post- Return of the Jedi Star Wars universe with some very precious (and adorable) cargo.  Why it's worth watching:   The Mandalorian is arguably one of the best Star Wars products to be released... ever. As a story that's only slightly connected to the rest of the franchise's canon, it's easy for anyone to jump into right away and enjoy the episodic stories of Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda, the most legit pop culture icon we've been blessed with in years. The real reason to tune in is that The Mandalorian is the TV equivalent of candy; it's throwback, swashbuckling television that looks absolutely incredible, with flecks of tiny Star Wars Easter eggs sprinkled in. It's pure entertainment of the highest degree.  How many seasons:  2

Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno, Devs

Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno,  Devs

What it's about: A woman investigates the disappearance of her boyfriend, who was working on a top-secret project at a powerful tech company in San Francisco. Why it's worth watching: After movies like Ex Machina and Annihilation , Alex Garland is proving to be one of sci-fi's most exciting creators, and his TV debut features all his trademarks. Devs is  packed with philosophy and intellectual discussions about existence, technology's place in society's advancement, and the dire consequences of tinkering with fate, almost to the point that it's too cerebral. But take it slow and you'll find a beautifully filmed single-season series that has big points to make about the dangerous precipice advanced computing has us inching toward.  How many seasons:  1

Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter; Timeless

Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter; Timeless

What it's about: A team of three travel throughout time to save the future from a mysterious organization that wants to change history Why it's worth watching: Time travel shows can become messy affairs of paradoxes, brain-busting theories, and plot holes, but Eric Kripke's Timeless used time travel simply and splendidly in this throwback, swashbuckling adventure series. A historian, an engineer, and a soldier are sent back in history to prevent the villainous organization known as Rittenhouse from altering history in order to change the future to their advantage, meeting famous overlooked figures from history -- often minorities and/or women -- along the way. In that sense, Timeless is almost as educational as it is exciting. But the real strength of Timeless comes from its characters and their relationships, like the epic romance between Lucy (Abigail Spencer) and Wyatt (Matt Lanter). Timeless is a real crowd-pleaser, the kind of sci-fi series for people who usually shy away from the genre. How many seasons: 2

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black

Orphan Black

What it's about: A woman discovers that she may not be the only one of... her Why it's worth watching: Orphan Black burst onto the scene in 2013, coming out of nowhere to stun critics and viewers with its crafty premise: a con artist witnesses the suicide of another woman who looks just like her, leading her down a rabbit hole of clones and conspiracies. The BBC America series combines action, science-fiction, and humor extremely well, creating characters you'll adore (Alison Hendrix is a legend) and anticipate venturing into each others' orbits. Chameleon Tatiana Maslany won an Emmy for her roles as the many different versions of the same woman, though she really should have won at least three. The first seasons are the strongest, but Maslany and the great cast stay great throughout its run. How many seasons: 5

Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica

What it's about: A reimagining of the 1970s classic in which alien robots threaten to wipe out humans Why it's worth watching: Battlestar Galactica is considered one of the all-time great sci-fi series, and when it was released in the mid-2000s, one of the best TV shows period. Ronald D. Moore's take adds a wrinkle that increases the paranoia tenfold; the Cylons can impersonate humans, meaning the crew of the Galactica realizes that some of its members could be Cylons in disguise, even if the Cylons don't know it themselves. Watch the miniseries that launched the series first, then dive into the next two seasons, which is some of the greatest sci-fi television ever made. Later seasons tail off a bit, and the ending wasn't well-received by all, but the show is still well worth the journey. How many seasons: 4

The Orville: New Horizons

The Orville: New Horizons

The Orville

What it's about: In the far future, the crew of a space ship explores the galaxy to bring alien cultures into the Planetary Union, while also sometimes manufacturing pot brownies in the ship's food synthesizer. Why it's worth watching: The Orville is an homage to Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane , who fawns over all things Trek while also not afraid to make fun of it. It's hard to tell what kind of show The Orville wants to be at some points because it's really trying to be all of them: an interstellar stoner comedy, a sci-fi swashbuckler, a workplace drama, a futuristic Twilight Zone . But that's part of the fun. Season 1 has some bumps, but Season 2, especially the midseason two-parter "Identity" is an improvement. Though the first two seasons aired on Fox, Season 3 is a Hulu exclusive. How many seasons:  3

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, The X-Files

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson,  The X-Files

The X-Files

What it's about:  A pair of FBI agents investigate the paranormal and inexplicable -- UFOs, ghosts, and even cannibals. Why it's worth watching: It's a classic for a reason. The X-Files set the mold with Fox Mulder ( David Duchovny ) and Dana Scully ( Gillian Anderson ) -- the definitive believer and skeptic, paired up to investigate the unexplained. But the Fox procedural was always too smart to draw a clean line between faith and science; even Mulder wanted proof, and even Scully had her religion. This is the most scientific thing about the science fiction of The X-Files (which is otherwise not all that sciency): The show's heroes are two people willing to upend their entire belief systems to get the truth. Mulder and Scully asked the messy questions, and it changed genre television. - Kelly Connolly How many seasons: 11 Bonus: 9 Shows Like The X-Files That You Should Watch Next

J.K. Simmons, Counterpart

J.K. Simmons, Counterpart

Counterpart

What it's about: A government desk jockey ( J.K. Simmons ) an an office in Berlin learns that an event split the world into two parallel universes, and the two sides are slowly approaching an all-out war against each other. Yikes! Why it's worth watching: The gimmick gives its wonderful cast (which includes Olivia Williams and Harry Lloyd ) the opportunity to play dual roles as each universe has a "counterpart" in the other. Simmons leads the way as his counterpart is a superspy, and watching him play against himself is incredible. Fans of espionage and science-fiction will have their heads full with the intricately plotted and twisty story . How many seasons: 2

Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; Black Mirror

Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Black Mirror

Black Mirror

What it's about: This anthology series tells different tales each episode about the dangers of technology and the depravities people will use it for. From digital worlds to dark dystopias, Black Mirror will have you second-guessing whether you should cut every cord you own just to be safe. Why it's worth watching: If you're in the mood to start hating the human race, Black Mirror is the sci-fi show for you. While most of these stories are a little bit depressing (and some are borderline horrific), a few are uplifting enough to cleanse your palate (check out Season 3's "San Junipero" or Season 4's "Hang the DJ" for some heart eyes). The best part about this binge is that while you'll definitely get hooked, the fact that it's an anthology series means you won't necessarily find yourself powering through episodes at 3 a.m. since each episode is a standalone story. How many seasons: 5

Brian J Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blue, Alaina Huffman and Jamil Walker Smith, Stargate Universe

Brian J Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blue, Alaina Huffman and Jamil Walker Smith, Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe

What it's about: A group of scientists, military personnel and a few civilians accidentally find themselves transported onto an ancient ship, thousands of lightyears from Earth. While stranded in strange galaxies, tensions run high as they attempt to explore the unknown universe and find a way back home. Why it's worth watching: Out of all the Stargate series that could have made this list, we picked Stargate Universe because it combines all of our favorite sci-fi elements: a brilliant group of stranded strangers, space, time travel, political infighting and terrifying aliens. It's literally a one-stop shop for every nerd-tastic fantasy you've ever had with the bonus of great performances and top-notch storytelling. We do warn you, however, Stargate Universe was canceled after Season 2 and ended on a pretty huge cliffhanger, so you should go into this binge knowing that when you get to the end, you'll want to pull your hair out wishing there was more. You're welcome for the heads up. How many seasons: 2

Fringe

What it's about: A team of experts led by a kooky old scientist ( John Noble ), his son ( Joshua Jackson ), and an FBI agent ( Anna Torv ) investigate strange occurrences around the country, X-Files style. Their work leads them to discover something entirely new that will change the world forever. Why it's worth watching: The J.J. Abrams-produced series is one of the best broadcast science-fiction shows of all time, particularly in its first three seasons, and perfected the art of the serialized procedural by weaving the show's deep mythology and excellent character work into weekly standalone stories, making it easy to binge or watch in spurts. And by the time the end of Season 1 starts, you'll have a hard time stopping. How many seasons: 5

Amanda Schull and Aaron Sanford, 12 Monkeys

Amanda Schull and Aaron Sanford, 12 Monkeys

What it's about: After a deadly virus kills 7 billion people, the survivors living in 2043 send a scavenger named James Cole ( Aaron Stanford ) to the past to stop the virus from being released in the first place. Naturally, time loops and even forbidden romance get in the way of his mission to save the human race. Why it's worth watching: 12 Monkeys is a show you have to pay close attention to in order to keep track of the changing timelines and loops, but ultimately the mythology and the world-building are just too good to pass up! Plus, this show has some of the most kick-butt women on TV, which is harder to find than it should be in the sci-fi genre. With the fourth and final season come and gone, you'll be able to binge the whole thing start to finish! How many seasons: 4

Mandip Gill, Jodie Whittaker, John Bishop, Doctor Who

Mandip Gill, Jodie Whittaker, John Bishop, Doctor Who

What it's about: The Doctor, a humanoid alien of an extinct race called the Time Lords, travels the universe in his (or her!) Tardis, a time-traveling spaceship that takes that shape of a phone booth. Together with his (or her!) human companions, The Doctor regularly saves the world from destruction with his (or her!) quick wit and timey-wimey adventures. Why you should watch: If you're looking for something a little less intense and more whimsical, Doctor Who is the show for you. Typically, each episode travels to a new time period or galaxy (often both) where the Doctor and companions of the moment have wild adventures while escaping the evil clutches of the Daleks and Cybermen. Although, when you least expect it, the show knows just how to hit you where it hurts. So although it's a show of whimsy, be prepared to cry your eyes out too. Jodie Whittaker joined the series as the first female doctor in Season 11. How many seasons: 13

Joel Kinnaman, Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon

What it's about: Far in the future, scientists have found a way to digitize and save human consciousness, allowing people's minds to be copied and transported from one body to another, essentially making humans immortal. When one of the richest men in the universe is murdered -- though his copied consciousness obviously survives -- he hires Takeshi Kovacs ( Joel Kinnaman ), a mercenary hundreds of years old to figure out who "killed" him. In Season 2, Kovacs, in an entirely new body ( Anthony Mackie ), searches for his long lost love while investigating a series of new murders. Why it's worth watching: This futuristic series will have your head spinning with awesome technological advancements and a mystery that's almost too tangled to unravel. The kicker, though, is the flashback portion of the saga that not only ties well into the overall narrative but will have you begging for a spin-off based completely in the past. How many seasons: 2

Eliza Taylor, Lola Flanery, and Marie Avgeropoulos, The 100

Eliza Taylor, The 100

What it's about: Nearly 100 years after nuclear war wipes out the human race on Earth, the only survivors are the members aboard a joint-space station called The Ark circling the globe. When overpopulation becomes a problem, The Ark decides to send 100 teenage delinquents to the ground to see if the Earth is habitable, but these misfits find more than bargained for when they arrive. Why it's worth watching: Assuming the words "apocalypse" and "teens" didn't get you, The 100 is worth a binge simply for the dynamic storytelling alone. Rather than focus on hot teens running a community, the show hones in on the lengths to which humans will go to stay alive and whether that survival requires you to lose what it is that makes you human. It's a pretty insightful look into the future, and with seven seasons under its belt, it's a good, long binge. How many seasons: 7

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin, Firefly

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin, Firefly

What it's about:  Space cowboys. Enough said. Why it's worth watching: What list would be complete without the cult classic Firefly ? This short-lived series took fans by storm back in 2002, though it was canceled after only 14 episodes. That makes it a quick binge full of shoot-outs and smuggling that will leave you begging for more. If you want an end to the story, you'll have to find the wrap-up movie, Serenity , which is currently streaming through Starz . How many seasons: 1

Lisa Vicari, Dark

Lisa Vicari, Dark

What it's about:  Thanks to a wormhole in the underground caves beneath the local power plant, strange things start happening in the small German town of Winden. Time travel, disappearing children, and family secrets intertwine in a thrilling mystery that spans three generations. Why you should watch: Dark was Netflix's first German-language Original, meaning you've either got to watch with subtitles or the English dub. Though it may take you a minute to get into it, once you do, you're in for a wild ride. Tangled webs of time travel and family secrets pair well with the show's odd sense of humor, making for a cool mystery that will keep you binging late into the night. How many seasons:  3

Nadine Nicole, The Expanse

Nadine Nicole, The Expanse

The Expanse

What it's about: Set in a future where humans have colonized the solar system, prejudices have divided humanity into three camps: Earth, Mars, and The Belt (an asteroid belt). But when a mysterious alien technology is discovered and a political conspiracy spanning the solar system begins to unravel, it becomes up to the idealist James Holden to try and save humanity from the potential alien weapon -- and themselves. Why you should watch: The most intriguing part of The Expanse is the intricate world-building and political machinations that underscore the cool sci-fi stuff like space battles and even gravity torture. The interplanetary conflict at the core of the show's story creates a ton of juicy arcs that all build toward some seriously unpredictable reveals. How many seasons: 5

Best Hulu Sci-Fi April 2024

Best Hulu Sci-Fi to Watch Now (April 2024)

By Jason Faulkner

You don’t need to look any further for the best Hulu sci-fi in April 2024 . This month, Hulu has a ton of great science fiction shows to keep you hooked to your screen. There are a lot of old favorites like The X-Files and Firefly, as well as newer hits like The Handmaid’s Tale and The Orville.

What are the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Hulu in April 2024?

The best sci-fi shows on Hulu in April 2024 have something for everyone, whether you’re looking to dive into a dystopia, or chase down bounties with a group of space cowboys. You’ll have a blast with these series and movies that are available to watch now.

Cowboy Bebop

The adventures of a ragtag group of bounty hunters on the spaceship Bebop are told in this highly acclaimed anime series. Cowboy Bebop is one of the most influential anime of all time and is a must-watch for fans of any genre. It has great visuals, memorable characters, and an iconic jazz soundtrack. The show isn’t strictly sci-fi either. It mixes different genres — noir, western, and comedy — to the point where it becomes something wholly unique.

When Dr. Stone begins, a mysterious light freezes the world’s population to stone. Thousands of years later Senku, a young scientist, is one of the first to awaken from this state he sets out to rebuild society with his know-how. Dr. Stone is a new and entertaining take on the post-apocalyptic sub-genre. Its fascinating characters, smart plots, and educational content make it a great choice for people who want to watch something fun and informative at the same time.

The Fifth Element

This stunning and underrated space opera, is directed by Luc Besson with art design from the iconic artists Moebius and Jean-Claude Mezieres. The Fifth Element is about a cab driver named Korben Dallas who gets involved in a mission to save the world from a great evil. Along with the mysterious Leeloo and a group of memorable characters, Korben has to race the clock to prevent Earth’s destruction. This movie is a true classic in the sci-fi genre. It has stunning visuals, eclectic humor, and endless action.

Firefly takes place in a galaxy where Earth’s government has become harsh and totalitarian and many have fled to the edges of civilization to keep their freedom. It follows the adventures of a group of rebellious people on the spaceship Serenity as they do both legal and illegal jobs to stay alive. This short-lived but incredibly popular show was created by Joss Whedon of Buffy fame. It smoothly blends elements of science fiction and western genres, creating a unique and immersive world with unforgettable characters.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is based on Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking dystopian book of the same name. It takes place in a totalitarian society where women have no rights and are forced to work as sexual slaves. June, a handmaid who has to deal with the harsh government and fight for her freedom, is at the center of the show. Fantastic acting and deep themes make The Handmaid’s Tale an exciting and moving sci-fi drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you think about its strong message long after the credits roll.

Idiocracy Camacho

A normal guy named Joe is put into suspended animation as part of a military experiment. He wakes up 500 years later to find that society has become an alarmingly stupid place. Though of average intelligence in his time, Joe finds he’s the smartest person in this new world, so he has to figure out how to deal with its problems and save everyone from being so stupid. Idiocracy is a funny and biting look at modern society that shows how dangerous anti-intellectualism can be and how important it is to value knowledge and critical thought.

The Orville

The Orville , created by Seth MacFarlane, is a love letter to classic sci-fi shows like Star Trek. It follows the crew of the exploratory spaceship USS Orville as they deal with the difficulties of traveling between stars, meeting aliens, and building relationships with other people. The Orville has quickly become a fan favorite and a standout addition to Hulu’s sci-fi genre. It has the right blend of funny and serious stories and is surprisingly self-aware and tender.

Outlaw Star

Follow the crew of the spaceship Outlaw Star as they go on a quest to find called the Galactic Leyline, the location of an immense treasure, in this action-packed anime series. Along the way, they have to deal with threats, such as other pirates, hostile aliens, and a powerful company that wants to take control of the wealth for itself. Outlaw Star is an exciting and engaging story that keeps sci-fi fans on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. It seamlessly blends science fiction, adventure, and fantasy elements.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

This exciting show picks up where Terminator 2: Judgment Day left off. It follows Sarah Connor and her son John as they keep fighting Skynet. With the help of Cameron, a modified Terminator, they work to stop the end of the world and change the future. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a well-written, suspenseful, and action-packed addition to the Terminator world, even though it only lasted a two seasons. It gives fans a new way to look at their favorite characters and their ongoing fight against the machines.

The X-Files

The X-Files is widely considered to be one of the most important sci-fi shows of all time. It follows FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigate strange events and cases of the paranormal. There are equal parts science fiction, horror, and conspiracy in The X-Files. It has become a cultural touchstone, and any sci-fi fan should watch it. The show has been revived and spun off multiple times because of how famous it is, making it a true classic in its genre. With its captivating plots, memorable characters, and masterful mix of genres, The X-Files continues to fascinate viewers and inspire new generations of sci-fi fans.

  • Trivia Unlike the first two seasons, the whole third season was written in advance, and scenes from different episodes were shot in a row, based on the location and actors' availability. Jon Cassar and Seth MacFarlane split the direction duties for the 10 episodes so they could work like that.
  • Goofs Moclan biology makes no sense. It appears that the "males" have all the necessary equipment for reproduction, which implies that they are in fact hermaphrodites. If that were the case, cisgender Moclans would have been bred out as useless, and the concept of "male" and "female" would be at best only a dim memory in the lexicon of the race.

7 Shows Like Star Trek: Picard You Must See

Sayak Basu of 7 Shows Like Star Trek: Picard You Must See

When we talk about the most popular film or television franchises in the world, one name which is bound to come up is ‘Star Trek’. With its massive range of 13 movies, eight TV shows, three animated shows, merchandise, games, action figures and so on, ‘Star Trek’ has influenced popular culture unlike anything else.

Therefore, when this franchise comes out with a new TV series, it is bound to send fans into a frenzy. ‘ Star Trek: Picard ‘, the eighth series of the franchise, centers around one of the most popular characters of the ‘Star Trek’ universe, Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart ), the former captain of the starship USS Enterprise.

However, when this series begins, we see him leading a happy and peaceful retired life. This peace proves to be short-lived as we soon see a woman called Dahj coming to Picard and telling him about how a group of Romulan assassins is out to get her. The series is a fine blend of drama and science fiction and treads a territory hardly witnessed earlier in this franchise.

If you have enjoyed watching ‘Star Trek: Picard’, here are some other shows you might want to check out. Many of them are available on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

7. Star Trek: The Original Series (1965-1969)

star trek like show on hulu

This is the series with which the entire franchise kicked off. ‘ Star Trek: The Original Series ‘ first started airing on NBC in 1965, but was discontinued after three seasons due to low ratings. However, the series later garnered a huge cult following when it was shown on syndication.

Most of the iconic characters of the ‘Star Trek’ universe like Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, and others appear in this series for the first time. Here we see Captain Kirk out with his crew in the 2260s, exploring the entire Milky Way, looking for newer civilizations mankind has never contacted before. This series’ cultural significance trumps any critical evaluation.

6. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

star trek like show on hulu

While talking about shows to watch if you like ‘Star Trek: Picard’, it would be criminal to not mention the series where we see the legendary Picard for the first time. Picard and his crew, consisting of people like Commander William Riker, Geordi La Forge, and others are all a part of the second generation of space explorers who have been sent out into the world with newer equipment and faster spacecraft.

This is the series that launched the franchise in a massive way and made it the talk of the town. The excellent writing of the series goes a long way in bringing the characters pretty close to our hearts.

5. The Orville (2017-)

star trek like show on hulu

Created by and starring Seth MacFarlane , ‘ The Orville ‘ can easily be called a satirical take on shows like ‘Star Trek’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’, and others. The premise of the series is almost the same as the aforementioned shows. MacFarlane plays the character of Captain Ed Mercer who is commanding the eponymous ship.

However, problems in his personal life constantly prevent Mercer from carrying out his duties in a way he wants to. The comical situations these characters on the Orville constantly face are the primary concerns of this series. ‘The Orville’ fails to clearly make a statement in Season 1 but does make it up with a brilliant follow-up in Season 2.

4. Origin (2018)

star trek like show on hulu

A unique science fiction drama series, ‘Origin’ centers around a group of space explorers who are heading towards an unknown planet on a spacecraft. As they struggle to survive, the crew begins to realize that one among them is a cause of concern for all the others.

As tension and suspicion begin taking a toll on the members of the crew, everyone’s basic instinct of survival comes through. The series falls back on tropes a lot, but the performances by the actors are simply spellbinding.

3. Avenue 5 (2020-)

Avenue 5 season 1

An HBO original series, ‘ Avenue 5 ‘ is the story of the eponymous interplanetary cruise ship which is under the command of Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie). While on its way, the ship suddenly goes off its intended track due to a technical glitch and ends up far away from its preset course.

While there are provisions for eight weeks for the people on board, the cruise ship will take years to return back to its course. How Clark leads the crew during these perilous times is essentially what the show is all about. The comedic elements of the series give it a nice twist. Each character is also written with great insight, and thus they get etched into the hearts of audiences quite seamlessly.

2. The Expanse (2015-)

This brilliant Syfy series is set far in the future when Mars has also been colonized by humans and there is a constant tension between the governments of the two planets. In this war-like scenario, we follow a detective and the captain of a spacecraft, who are both looking for one woman.

The quest is not only limited among these three characters but can have a huge effect on humanity as a whole. The writing, the brilliant production designs, and amalgamation of various genres make ‘ The Expanse ‘ an unmissable series.

1. Lost In Space (2018-)

star trek like show on hulu

This series is set during a time when the earth is rendered inhabitable and many families are being sent on another planet so that they can colonize the place and make it ready for others. ‘ Lost In Space ‘ follows one such family, the Robinsons, who have been sent to space on a large mothership.

However, a technical error forces the Robinsons, along with many others, to land on a different planet altogether. Besides being a brilliant science fiction story, the series also has interesting characters, an emotional core, and certain subtle but effective comedic moments.

Invader zim.

The early ’00s were a dark time for ambitious animation, but Invader Zim is a definite stand-out. Zim comes from an intergalactic empire bent on conquest. Unfortunately, their social hierarchy is based on height, so the diminutive Zim is forced to settle with invading a “mystery planet” known as Earth. The humor is very Hot Topic … in a good way.

Cowboy Bebop

This space western Neo-noir is not just a great sci-fi offering, it’s one of the best Anime shows of all time. Spike Spiegel and his comrades may just comprise the solar system’s baddest bounty hunters. The team gets involved in countless sticky situations in their quest to claim bounties, but always manage to stay a few steps ahead of the law and vicious crime syndicates alike.

Solar Opposites

From the creators of Rick and Morty comes an animated comedy that’s out of this world … literally. A family of aliens has crash-landed on Earth. Is this a good thing? That remains to be seen. In the meantime, Korvo, Terry, Yumyulack, and Jesse are going to make the most of it, and maybe, just maybe, make Earth their forever home.

The truth is out there … or is it? The X Files follows the investigations of two FBI agents as they uncover everything from the existence of cryptozoological creatures, persons with magical abilities, and of course, extraterrestrials.

Stargate SG-1

Space is massive, and behind every uncharted star is a race of invaders like the parasitic snake-like Goa’uld. Luckily, the top secret Stargate Command scours the universe for alien allies and weapons to defend against the Goa’uld threat using the Stargate to travel across space. It’s the sequel series to the popular 1994 Roland Emmerich film.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Douglas Adams’ book series is arguably one of the finest pieces of sci-fi fiction ever published. The 1981 BBC Two series is far more fleshed out than the nearly-ubiquitously-hated 2005 film. And in typical BBC science fiction production tradition, everything from the props to the stage design looks cheap as heck. But that’s part of the charm.

Best Dystopian Sci-Fi Shows on Hulu

The handmaid’s tale.

The series, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, may have become more difficult to watch in its most recent season. Yet, this Hulu original remains one of its best offerings. The show depicts all the main characters from the novel, but expands their stories more than a single book could ever do.

If you managed to get your hands on a time machine, where in time would you travel to? Would you prevent atrocities from ever happening? The popular Steven King novel examines the limits and dangers of messing with established timelines, with the John F. Kennedy assassination at the forefront. James Franco stars in this thrilling and thought-provoking entry.

Set in a distant future, the last remnant of humans live in a domed city of New Babyl, that protects them from the aftermath of a cataclysmic war. A group of teens stumble upon an ancient archive of music and popular culture that shakes the foundation of their society.

Best Star Trek Shows on Hulu

Star trek: the next generation.

The intergalactic adventures of Captain Jean Luc Picard and his crew, including Starfleet’s first Klingon officer and a Noonien Soong Android, hit television with a bang in the late ’80s. It may just be the most beloved iteration of Star Trek ever made. If you’re a sci-fi fan, it’s definitely a must-watch.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future is utopian. But what if paradise wasn’t as clear cut as once thought? Deep Space Nine takes place on space station over the planet Bajor, captained by Captain Benjamin Sisko, played to the hilt by Avery Brooks. The series delves deep into the darker aspects of Star Trek , and explores themes about morality, the limits of humanity, and even religion. It may not be the most popular Trek series, but it’s as close to prestige TV as the series ever got.

The Orville

Technically, it’s not Star Trek . But this sci-fi adventure sitcom helmed by comedian and well-known Trekkie Seth McFarlane takes tons of inspiration from Trek and does little to hide it. Imagine if The Next Generation had dick jokes thrown in. Otherwise, it’s the same planet-hopping romp Trek fans are used to.

Although it only lasted for three seasons in the 1960s, the original Star Trek has become one of the most influential TV series---and pieces of science fiction in any medium---of all time. Creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision focuses on exploration rather than conflict, as the starship Enterprise seeks out "new life and new civilizations." Led by William Shatner's hotheaded Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's logical Vulcan Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley's irascible Dr. McCoy, Star Trek remains a sci-fi gold standard.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek are streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Thanks to the popularity of Star Trek reruns, NBC brought back Gene Roddenberry and many of the show's writers and actors for this animated version, which lasted for two seasons in the 1970s. It follows the continuing adventures of the Enterprise crew and has been considered an extension of the original series, with characters and concepts that later made their way into live-action. The animation may be rudimentary, but the stories are every bit as thoughtful and layered as the episodes of the original series.

Following the continued success of Star Trek reruns and theatrical films, creator Gene Roddenberry launched a new series with a new Enterprise crew, set even further in the future. Starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, The Next Generation continues Roddenberry's focus on a harmonious future, while expanding on alien races and galactic regions introduced in the original series. Co-starring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and more, The Next Generation has become every bit as iconic as its predecessor, setting the stage for decades of Trek to come.

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: The Next Generation are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Overlapping with the end of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine is the first Star Trek series to take place away from the Enterprise, set on a space station located in a volatile area of the galaxy. Avery Brooks leads the series as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, overseeing an unpredictable crew of Starfleet officers and alien allies, along with an entire station's worth of residents and businesses. In its later seasons, Deep Space Nine introduced serialized storytelling to Trek for the first time, gaining a reputation as the darkest and most mature Trek series to date.

Returning to the exploratory missions of a starship, Voyager takes Star Trek into an entirely new quadrant of the galaxy. The crew of the titular vessel is transported via a mysterious energy wave into an area of space where Starfleet has never been. Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) must lead her crew on a long journey home, while navigating the unfamiliar threats in this strange new region. Voyager expands the scope of Star Trek's universe while introducing fan-favorite characters like the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the former Borg Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: Voyager are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A prequel set in the years before the formation of the galaxy-spanning United Federation of Planets, Enterprise takes place on the starship Enterprise a century before it's occupied by Capt. Kirk and his crew. The primarily human crew is led by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), as inhabitants of Earth are just beginning to explore the galaxy and encounter some of Star Trek's familiar alien races. Enterprise features a more action-oriented focus than previous Trek series, setting the tone for Trek series and movies to come, and its later seasons are driven by long-term serialized stories.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Enterprise are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

After a dormant period of more than a decade following the cancellation of Enterprise, Discovery brings Star Trek into the streaming era with another prequel. Set after Enterprise but before the original series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, the science officer on the starship Discovery. The first two seasons explore the early days of the Federation and revisit many classic Trek themes and characters. In later seasons, both the starship and the show are thrust forward hundreds of years into the future, truly going boldly where no Trek has gone before.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Discovery are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

In conjunction with Star Trek's streaming revival, this anthology of bite-size episodes provides supplemental stories for the new Trek era. Some are standalone pieces highlighting minor characters or side stories from Star Trek: Discovery, while others tie more closely to ongoing plots from Discovery (and later Star Trek: Picard as well). It's another way for Star Trek's creators to illustrate their expansive universe of galactic space exploration.

All episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a series set 20 years after Picard's last Star Trek appearance. The retired Picard returns to active duty with a new mission and a new crew, in a slower, more character-driven story than other Trek series. In addition to Stewart, actors from other past Trek series, including Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan, make appearances, as Picard struggles to find his place in a changed Starfleet that no longer reflects his values.

Seasons 1-2 of Star Trek: Picard are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s is also the first overtly comedic Trek series, focusing on a group of lower-level recruits who do all the grunt work on intergalactic voyages. Set around the end of the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era, Lower Decks takes place on the Cerritos, a Starfleet ship mostly assigned to minor missions. The creators combine gentle mockery with a deep love for and knowledge of Trek lore, which makes them perfect for taking the franchise down a peg.

Star Trek returns to animation again for this family-friendly series aimed at bringing in a younger audience. Like Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy takes place in the remote Delta Quadrant, where a rowdy group of young aliens from a prison colony discover an abandoned Starfleet ship. They take control of the ship so they can escape their grim circumstances, in a harsh backwater beyond the reach of the United Federation of Planets. As they flee the colony's cruel overlord, they're trained in starship operations by a hologram of Voyager's legendary Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds takes place on the Enterprise before Capt. Kirk took over, when it was led by Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike is joined by younger versions of familiar characters who've served on the Enterprise, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). In contrast to the heavily serialized storytelling of other modern Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds focuses primarily on single-episode stories, enhancing its throwback style.

Star Trek Movies and Shows

Launched on September 8, 1966 — nearly 54 years ago — the NBC-TV series Star Trek was the beginning of a new age of science fiction on television and, eventually, the big screen. The first show to echo the sophistication and vision of sci-fi literature , Star Trek was only a cult hit at the time of its initial run but refused to die even after its cancellation, with the original 79 episodes running for years in syndication.

More than five decades later, Star Trek encompasses eight TV series (a total of 764 episodes and counting) and 13 films, plus countless books, comics, games and more. It’s had its ups and downs, its high points and its misfires, but it remains one of the most beloved and durable franchises in all of pop culture.

Now, thanks to streaming, all those episodes and movies are available to watch any time (we know you diehard Trekkers have the Blu-rays and DVDs, but you don’t have to break those out anymore). Below is a handy guide to where you can stream every iteration of Trek , from The Original Series to the movies to the new Star Trek: Picard . Grab your remote and boldly go…

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969)

The one that started it all, the original Star Trek came along at a time when most screen sci-fi (movies and TV) was still just monster movies or kiddie fare ( Lost in Space , anyone?). Gene Roddenberry ’s vision of an intelligent, allegorical sci-fi series, which used actual genre writers for much of its first two seasons, was groundbreaking in ways that reverberate to this day. And its cast, led by William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock and DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, became iconic.

Star Trek: The Animated Series

Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1974)

Using the voices of many of the original cast members and even employing writers from the original series, TAS had a genuine chance to extend the original show with the visual freedom animation offered. But the format turned out to be its enemy, as clunky, cheap animation and frequent reuse of shots gave the show a shoddy, amateurish reputation. Some of the stories are quite good, however.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

Set nearly a century after the original series, with Gene Roddenberry mandating that conflict between the crew members be diminished by that point, ST: TNG proved to be enormously popular even with a brand new, unfamiliar crew. It took most of three seasons for the show to find its footing, but Captain Picard (a magnificent Patrick Stewart ) and company went on many captivating and genuinely outstanding adventures of their own.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999)

Many fans consider DS9 the best Trek series ever , and they certainly can make a good argument for it: the first Trek show not set on a starship, but instead on a remote space station, DS9 addressed cultural divides, character conflict, religion and war in a bolder fashion that any Trek entry before it — while also utilizing the kind of serialized storytelling that is now the standard across the medium.

Available in the UK on Netflix UK , Amazon UK* (*purchase only)

Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001)

Voyager found members of a Federation starship and the rebel Maquis stranded together 70,000 years from Earth in the Delta Quadrant, facing a 75-year journey home. Headed by Trek ’s first female captain , Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Voyager encountered all kinds of interesting new races as well as old enemies the Borg during the long and often compelling journey home.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005)

The first series to act as a prequel, set a decade before the creation of what would become the United Federation of Planets, Enterprise followed the crew of the first ship to bear that name. Uneven in quality and struggling to find resonant stories, Enterprise was canceled after four seasons and ended an 18-year run for Trek on TV.

Available in the US on Amazon , Netflix , Hulu , CBS All Access

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery (2017- )

Set 10 years prior to TOS , Discovery ’s troubled birth (it went through numerous delays and several showrunners) led to the most polarizing show in the franchise to date. Focusing for once on a central character other than the captain — mutinous anthropologist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who turns out to be the adopted sister of one Mr. Spock — it has often ignored or played fast and loose with Trek continuity while painting Starfleet in a more conspiratorial light. Season 3 will debut in 2020.

Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard (2020- )

Like Discovery before it, Picard has divided Star Trek fans with its depiction of a Federation in decline, marked by bigotry, deception and treachery. But there is no questioning the powerful presence of Patrick Stewart, playing an older, flawed Picard for the first time in 18 years, and the thrill of seeing old friends like Seven of Nine, Will Riker and Deanna Troi. The show has certainly had its moments ; we’ll see if more are to come in the already-announced season 2 .

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

After an aborted attempt at a second TV series ( Star Trek: Phase II ), Paramount Pictures brought Trek to the big screen in a lavish, $40 million epic (the most expensive movie of its time) that reunited the original crew in a 2001 -like encounter with a massive, mysterious space probe. Slow-moving, alternately impressive and shaky visually, ST: TMP nevertheless proved that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise could hold their own on the big screen — and strangely, the film has actually aged better than most.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Still considered the finest Trek movie of all , and rightfully so, The Wrath of Khan focused — like the original show — on character and story instead of visual effects and esoteric concepts. Bringing back a deadly enemy from the first season, the generic superman Khan (Ricardo Montalban), the movie was thrilling, dramatic and, with the death of Spock at the finale, incredibly moving.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Even though the end of Star Trek II strongly hinted at Spock’s return, it wasn’t a given. But Leonard Nimoy did come back for Star Trek III — as director (and yes, as Spock too in the film’s closing minutes) of this somber and often underrated entry . Captain Kirk loses almost everything — his beloved ship, his commission and his newly reconciled son — to save his friend’s life in a poignant story about friendship and loyalty. And there’s a bad-ass villain too, a Klingon captain played to the hilt by Christopher Lloyd.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Leonard Nimoy’s second outing as director is both a comedy and an environmentally themed adventure — and it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the franchise. This light-hearted romp sent Kirk and the gang back to 20 th century San Francisco to rescue a pair of humpback whales, and the fish-out-of-water (pun intended) antics of the crew provide plenty of laughs and a ton of heart.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Shatner got behind the camera for this turgid, unfunny mess , which regularly rates near the bottom of any Trekker’s list. The old “alien pretending to be God” trope, a long-lost brother we never knew Spock had and the other cast members acting by and large like buffoons make this perhaps the most embarrassing of the Enterprise ’s big screen voyages. There are a few nice moments — there always are — but this nowhere near first on our revisit list.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * Amazon UK , *YouTube , * Sky Store (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

The classic Trek cast bounced back from Star Trek V with a final adventure that was also one of their best . A suspenseful, urgent meditation on aging, grievance and the end of the Cold War, Star Trek IV was a remarkable example of how Trek could show us at our finest even while facing down our lingering demons. Plus it ends with both a great space battle and one of the greatest cast send-offs ever (which was emulated by none other than Avengers Endgame ).

Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

What could have been a magnificent passing of the torch from the classic Trek cast to the TNG crew ends up looking and feeling more like a tepid extended TNG episode with weak cameos from Kirk, Scotty (James Doohan) and Chekov (Walter Koenig). Patrick Stewart and his team are all solid, as is villain Malcolm McDowell, and the crashing of the Enterprise is a genuinely gripping setpiece. But the story and motivations are undercooked — as is most of the movie.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

Easily the best of the TNG quartet, First Contact travels back in time to the very start of Earth’s push into space, where the Borg intends to cripple humanity once and for all. The crew of the Enterprise follow them to make sure history isn’t changed, even as Picard confronts his fear and hatred of the Borg . Jonathan Frakes does a nice first-time directing job, balancing the action and character work ably, while Alice Krige steals the show as the sensual Borg Queen.

Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

Like Generations , the third TNG theatrical outing feels like a mediocre TV segment stretched to feature length; even Frakes’ direction seems uninspired. One difference: with Picard fighting a secret plan (engineered by F. Murray Abraham, above) to uproot the natives of a “fountain of youth” planet, the seeds were planted for later Trek entries that portrayed an increasingly corrupt Federation. Otherwise, this is a forgettable, often cheesy film.

Star Trek: Nemesis

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

The final big-screen outing for the TNG cast is better than its reputation suggests , as Picard squares off against a renegade Romulan who happens to be his clone. Tom Hardy chews the scenery fabulously as the latter, and the climactic battle between his massive ship and the Enterprise is well handled by director Stuart Baird. There’s also a surprising emotional payoff for Data (Brent Spiner) that ends up being the hook for Star Trek: Picard 18 years later.

Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams does what many thought couldn’t be done — he reboots Star Trek with a fresh, young cast inhabiting the original roles made iconic by Shatner, Nimoy and their crew. The new cast, led by Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, is the best thing about the film, which also uses a clever plot device to position this timeline just slightly to the side of the original one. The reliance on action over ideas is a bit of a letdown, and unfortunately would carry over to the next two movies.

Available in the UK on Netflix , NOW TV , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

One of the worst Trek films ever , right down there with The Final Frontier . STID insults both fans and casual viewers with a brain-dead script, frantic action and massive contrivances (such as the sudden ability for someone to beam across the galaxy or the screenwriters’ well-worn “magic blood” gimmick). But its most egregious offense is turning into a half-assed remake of The Wrath of Khan that’s as dumb as it is pointless. This is what happens when people tackle Trek with no understanding of it.

Available in the UK on * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Still too reliant on action over depth, and featuring the third revenge-driven storyline in a row, Star Trek Beyond is nevertheless better than its predecessor . It mostly works as a standalone adventure, and once again the Pine/Quinto cast delivers with heart. But even though Beyond does occasionally capture the vibe of classic Trek , there’s a vague sense of desperation at work — like the franchise knows it’s run out of gas (and crashing the Enterprise for the third time in 13 films doesn’t help).

All Five Classic Star Trek Shows Leaving Hulu In January Too

The Star Trek library is leaving a third USA streaming service; this time it’s Hulu.

Trek TV saying goodbye Hulu

The USA-based Hulu has offered five live-action Star Trek series as part of its paid subscription service for most of the last decade, but that will all end in early January. Star Trek: The Original Series , The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise are all leaving the Disney-controlled streamer on January 5, 2022. Each of the shows now carries an expiration warning, counting down to that day.

Star Trek shows now have expiration warnings on Hulu

It’s all about Paramount+

The Star Trek TV exit from Hulu will come just days after the same five shows will be removed from the Amazon Prime Video subscription service in the USA. Three Trek shows left Netflix in September with The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine expected to be removed as soon as their licensing deal with ViacomCBS expires. Even after launching CBS All Access in 2014, the Star Trek library of television shows also continued to remain available on the three big streaming services continually for the last seven years. But with the 2021 rebranding as Paramount+ and a new focus on streaming, third-party licensing is no longer favored by ViacomCBS. This is an industry trend with the major content producers also seen with WarnerMedia/HBOMax, Comcast/Peacock, and Disney+.

This pulling back of Star Trek licensing with third-party streaming services is part of an avowed strategy of ViacomCBS to make their key franchises and assets available only on their own streaming service, Paramount+. And it isn’t just Star Trek. Other ViacomCBS shows are also exiting Hulu in January including The Twilight Zone , Twin Peaks , I Love Lucy and others. However, many more remain for the time being, including popular shows like Cheers , Frasier , and CSI .

But with all the Star Trek feature films and all the television series, including new original Trek shows, Paramount+ will soon be the sole home for streaming Star Trek in the USA.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Showrunner Explains Why They Reopened A TNG Mystery To Start Season 5

Since Star Trek is the only reason I stream at all, I’ll be happier when it’s all in one place!

I’m sad now. I didn’t realized until now that I watch various old Star Trek series when I want to between Amazon and Netflix. I don’t have Paramount+.

This was ALWAYS the plan, and if you were Paramount, you’d be stupid NOT to do this. Plus, it now makes Paramount+ worth getting. On top of the only place to legally stream ALL Star Trek, there’s suddenly a handful of good originals.

I’ll admit I recently got it for 1883 and I think i’ll likely be dropping Amazon now after dropping Netflix in 2020. Disney/Hulu bundle, Paramount and HBO Max seem to be the best combo for me right now. And will probably drop HBO next year especially now that the’y’re not doing new releases day-and-date (also helps that I got a discount promotion in October).

It’s not necessarily a good business strategy. It depends on whether Paramount+ is enough of a draw. Putting these series on already popular platforms has boosted their discoverability (especially Voyager) so it’s a (limited) risk. If Paramount+ doesn’t work out they still own and can license the content again.

I havent seen any of the new Star Wars since it is behind a paywall. I havent seen any of the new Star Trek series since they too are behind a paywall. Now I am being left out of the classic series too. The entire reason to cut cable was to stop overpaying for junk I dont watch just so I can have one or two things I do watch. So sad, I used to love Star Trek. Paying 10 bucks a month for something I was able to get along with my Prime subscription is not worth it.

So the stuff you watched on Prime was also a paywall…same thing.

I wonder if this isn’t a mistake in the long run. I’d think it might be sensible for them to keep making the various legacy shows available on some formats so as to encourage new people to find them and then maybe come sign up for Paramount + to see the others. I mean, yes, it makes sense fo all of them to be available at Paramount +, but taking them completely off of everything else seems a bit iffy to me.

From a realistic perspective it’s a yes/no answer.

While it does enhance brand awareness by offering the show on multiple services, it diminishes the push to get people to Paramount+ because they have access to the classic shows through another medium. For some fans there is a strong desire to avoid the new series and a view that the classics are available elsewhere so they feel they don’t need Paramount+, this moves the product to a centrally controlled service. Thus, Paramount is the only one benefiting from Trek streaming revenues moving forward.

They did say recently (I want to say Star Trek Day) that Paramount+ was going to be the exclusive home to Trek.

Aren’t they on Pluto for free?

If they are, they’ll be gone eventually.

Pluto is owned by ViacomCBS, so the Star Trek channel will stay.

And several shows are on H&I which is available in many markets with an antenna. But they’re still not On Demand or commercial-free.

Is H&I Viacom? I find myself watching the H&I Trek block every now and then. I think that’s a good way for them to pull folks to Paramount+ for Trek

Good point!

No, it’s not sensible. These are legacy shows that everyone knows, you can find clips on youtube, or they can run free one-month trials. People upset about this move to remove them from other services don’t seem to get the point of this whole streaming model.

Does Netflix license their originals to their competitors? C’mon now, folks.

My pre-teen nephews and niece who became Star Trek fans thanks to TOS being on Prime didn’t know the show before finding it there.

People can get the point but still find it upsetting.

I still just use dvd (blu for special stuff like Trek,Wars etc). it was kind of a big thing for me to change from vhs and held out until the last moment (collecting all those beautiful TOS vids! with 3eps per tape!), I can’t see me ever getting onboard with stream tho I’m just too old fashioned, like an old school 80s guy who can’t change and suddenly finds himself in the future

I salute you, but for most people, physical discs are a thing of the past and will never go back to how inconvenient they are in comparison to streaming (heck i’d rather stream the old SD low quality versions than watch blu-rays on disc).

Moving forward too, the legacy audiences who still prefer discs will only continue to shrink. They have to think progressively, or they will fail.

What about all the extras docs etc that are on the blus I guess they are avaliable on stream?

The appeal of value added material which people championed as a reason to get DVDs to replace their VHS has sadly wasted away. The enticement of HD transfers for people with blu ray obviously had appeal, but we are long past the days when some stars were getting paid big money just to sit down and do commentary for their movies.

Now it’s sadly just a niche audience that cares about things like that still. Classic Doctor Who, for example, is going strong on blu ray because the fanbase still laps up special features.

But as long as I have space for them, I will continue to buy physical copies of films and shows I love, simply because licensing deals are never forever. But I too am guilty of watching old Trek on the streamers. Never Paramount+, though – the UX is still horrible.

How can you fail if you own DVDs of these series?! You own them free and clear, don’t have to use Netflix or Hulu or paramount+ to pay/watch. I feel like I’m better off since I don’t NEED these streaming services for Trek if I don’t want to be forced by all this tripe, . . .

I like having the physical media too. There are some Trek series that are not worth buying the complete series for me like Voyager and Enterprise. I did enjoy having them available to watch a few choice episodes from time to time on streaming though.

I’m with you there, although I’d say im more a ’70’s guy – probably a few years older than you, . . .

Is there any way to know when DS9, VOY, and ENT will be removed from Netflix in Latin America? I’m in the middle of re-watching them but won’t be done until March, so I’d like to be able to plan accordingly and accelerate if need be. Thanks.

Look at the Netflix blogs for Latin America – I am guessing you need to accelerate your rewatch.

I don’t know of any, though.

..:annnd there goes my last streaming access to Trek. Good thing I have it all on DVD. P+ can wait.

At least “The Orville” will be on Sulu (as a friend and I call it).

There are, of course, six classic Star Trek shows, not five. :)

TAS was pulled back to P+ as an exclusive in late-2019. So it’s been gone from 3rd party streamers for sometime.

It’s still on Netflix in Latin America for now.

thank goodness for DVDs, then.

DVDs? Are you an archeologist?

No need to mock peoples viewing preferences dude.

DVDs are still quite popular, and elitism is not needed here.

If Trek is something you enjoy watching on a regular basis, owning the physical media is the best, most reliable bet. Streaming channel drops it, who cares? Internet goes down, who cares? It’s yours. So when I hear these announcements, I can take them with a grain of salt.

For all the people complaining about the cost of “another streaming service”… how do you think Paramount gets the millions upon millions of dollars to spend on making these series? And besides, isn’t P+ like $4.99 USD a month with ads? If you have a computer or phone to be streaming anything at all you most likely can afford $4.99. So quit complaining. It makes you seem sad. #DignityPlease

Yeah but when you add up all the streaming services you need to have to see all the shows that people are talking about or are nominated it gets to costing almost $50 plus the cost of the internet to even be able to stream the services.

This doesn’t bother me at all- Paramount+ has been getting better on content all along, but honestly – I have it for Trek alone, and doesn’t bother me one bit – especially now that it looks like there will be 40+ weeks of new content a year on it.

I’ve streamed a little off the other services, and every so often, the aspect ratio will be off on the shows older than Enterprise. Don’t understand that one bit – why does every streaming service (and channels for that matter) not correct the ratio for 16:9 every time now? Paramount+ has it right, and for TNG and TOS, you’re always getting the best resolution available.

How do you proclaim P+ to be the home of Star Trek when you can’t even make a coherent Star Trek hub on the app? Seriously, compared to the way Disney+ handles Star Wars and Marvel and its franchises, Star Trek has no equivalent on P+, another reason it is an embarrassing, third-rate streaming app with half as many features as pretty much every other service out there. I’m actually angry at how awful Paramount+ is, and Paramount/CBS in general and the way it’s handled Star Trek the past decade.

They do have a Trek hub under shows, but is only the shows and not the films.

I noticed today that Trek 2009 is listed as leaving again.

this is why you should just buy the dvds & watch them that way. you can watch whenever you want & don’t have to pay monthly fee. plus how are the going to get new fans this way.

Now how much longer til H&i & BBC America stop airing the show. H&I is currently the main way I watch the old Star Trek. BBC America is a joke since they speed up the episodes & cut about 30 Secs for more commercials . H&I plays them as they originally aired.

The best Paramount Plus Star Trek shows, plus a look at the shows to come

Published on July 1, 2021

star trek image

Since September 1966, the Star Trek universe has become one of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time. While others — particularly Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe — are perhaps more popular, it was Star Trek that led the way decades ago. Its legions of fans would not let this low budget three-season series disappear. This has led to 13 feature films, six additional live action TV series, and even an animated series, with more to come.

While there have been lots of Trek feature films, most people associate Star Trek with its many TV series incarnations. While you can find some Star Trek shows on platforms like Hulu and Netflix, Paramount Plus (previously known as CBS All Access) is the place to go if you want access to every Star Trek show.

Read more : Paramount Plus – Everything you need to know

The reasons why Star Trek has lasted this long as a major mainstream franchise are varied. Its many popular characters are one reason, along with its main themes of exploring space, cooperation with a variety of races and species, and more. It’s sometimes hard to believe that that it all started on a small Hollywood soundstage in late 1964, when the first of two pilots for the original series started filming.

With that in mind, here are the best Paramount Plus Star Trek shows you can stream right now. We will also take a look at all the announced Paramount Plus Star Trek shows that are planned for the future. You can sign up for the service at the link below, with a seven-day free trial.

Best Paramount Plus Star Trek shows:

Deep space nine.

  • The Next Generation
  • The Original Series
  • Lower Decks
  • The Animated Series

Editors note: We will update this post when new Star Trek shows on Paramount Plus are officially launched and completed.

star trek deep space nine

This might be a surprising choice for some people, including some fans. However, in our humble opinion, Deep Space Nine deserves this top spot on our best Star Trek shows list. It was the first Trek series with a black lead actor. Until Star Trek: Picard came along, it was also the only Trek series that wasn’t centered on a single starship. Being set on a remote space station allowed this series to go in different directions compared to other Trek series. It took on a ton of themes that actually make it relevant to watch today, including diversity, the use of misinformation in society, and much more.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Best sci-fi shows on Netflix Star Trek

Newer Trek fans might remember that when TNG first debuted way back in 1987, it got slammed by fans, mostly because it didn’t star the actors and characters of the original series. It took nearly three years for the show to find its own voice. For the rest of its run, TNG helped expand Star Trek beyond its base of TOS Trekkies. It presented us with great characters like the human-aspiring android Data, the complex Klingon Worf, and especially the level headed, but still determined, Captain Picard. TNG expanded the Trek universe by introducing us to its best alien villains, the Borg, along with making the Klingons more than just a violent warrior race. It still holds up today.

Star Trek: The Original Series

the original series

The Original Series will always hold a special place in the hearts of many long time Star Trek fans, if only because it was the first one out of the gate. Back in 1966, serious science fiction on television was found on anthology shows like the original The Twilight Zone (also on Paramount Plus) and The Outer Limits. TOS was the first adult sci-fi series with a recurring cast and setting. The look of the original U.S.S. Enterprise, and the many planets on its travels, definitely has a dated look (even with the remastered visual effects). However, the stories (at least from the first two seasons) still hold up, and Leonard Nimoy’s performance as Spock still stands out above the crowd.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

While there have been comedic episodes in various Star Trek series, Lower Decks is the first full-blown situation comedy set in this universe. Created by major Trek fan Mike McMahan (a former writer for Rick and Morty and the co-creator of Solar OPPOsites for Hulu ), this series examines the characters who are on board the U.S.S. Cerritos during the TNG/DS9/VOY era. The twist is the main characters of this show are not the captain or the bridge crew of this ship, but a group of lower-ranked crewmen who still have to deal with various alien and internal issues. While this series is a little mixed, Trek fans will likely smile, and even laugh out loud, when they watch this show. It’s extremely faithful to the source material but still manages to make fun of the franchise with a wink in its eyes. You can check out its second season on August 12, 2021.

Star Trek: Picard

star trek picard

The latest live action Trek series was something of a mixed bag in its first season. On the plus side, Sir Patrick Stewart is excellent as always, playing an older version of his TNG character. Picard remains a character who always searches for the truth in any situation, no matter how painful that truth might be. His main task is to find out the secret of a woman who apparently is an artificial being but just doesn’t know it yet. Isa Briones plays this character Dahj with both a wide-eyed innocence as well as terror (in fact, she plays multiple characters, but that’s going into spoiler territory). The visual effects of this series are the best ever made for a Trek TV show as well. On the downside, it takes far too long for this series’ story to actually get underway, and quite frankly there are lots of characters to keep up with that we don’t really care about. Hopefully, for Picard’s second season in 2022, we will get a more focused storyline, fewer characters, and more on Picard himself.

star trek voyager

The idea behind this series was a good one; push a Federation starship into a region of space that had never before been explored, with no backup from any other Starfleet vessels. It promised us new things to see in the Trek universe, and also a chance to see how Federation values would be tested when the crew didn’t have anyone to answer to. Unfortunately, while there are a number of good Voyager episodes to watch, this series basically turned into “The Next Generation: Phase Two.” It was (mostly) the same old stories and situations we have seen before (indeed, there were more than a few episodes that connected directly with TNG). Despite excellent performances from Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway and Robert Picardo as the ship’s holographic doctor, Voyager was a missed opportunity.

star trek discovery

This was the first of the live-action Paramount Plus Star Trek shows. Discovery is supposed to take place roughly a decade before the adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock in The Original Series. However, we have to wonder why the creators and producers of this show decided on this particular timeline for this series. It just feels like they used a dartboard, and the “10 years before TOS” was the section that was hit by the dart. As a result, Discovery feels like a mix of old Trek references and new storylines and formats. It just doesn’t jell well.

That’s not to say the show is all bad. Sonequa Martin-Green does an excellent job playing the rebellious Starfleet officer Michael Burnham. She has to learn some lessons herself even as she has to earn the trust of the crew of the Discovery. Jason Isaacs is excellent as Discovery’s mysterious captain Lorca and Doug Jones does his usual terrific performance, under lots of makeup, as the alien Saru. In the second season, we get treated to Anson Mount, who plays Christopher Pike, the Enterprise’s captain before Kirk, and he makes us believe in heroic Starfleet leaders again. Ethan Peck is also introduced as a young Spock, and he does an admirable job.

At the end of the second season, we saw the Discovery time-warping 900 years into the future. Free from having to meld its storylines into previous Trek continuity, Discovery told a story of a galaxy that no longer is governed by the Federation. That’s because an event in the past destroyed most of the galaxy’s dilithium crystals, which are needed for most ships to travel at warp speed. The season is devoted to figuring out what happened during “The Burn”, how to reverse its effects and restore the Federation. While it’s an improvement, the show still doesn’t have the rawest of the original series or the sense of wonder that TNG has. It will be interesting to see how the show evolves again during its upcoming fourth season.

star trek enterprise

This show seemed like a bad idea from the start. A show that takes place 100 years before Kirk and Spock, and even before the formation of the Federation? It seemed like something that could have been done in a movie, or at most a mini-series. In the end, Enterprise was an even more watered-down version of TOS and TNG, although it did get somewhat better in the final two seasons of its four-season run. Scott Bakula is always good, and he does the best that he can as Captain Archer, but this show, with the exception of a few episodes, is mostly not worth your time.

Star Trek: The Animated Series

animated series

A few years after TOS was canceled, Filmation got the rights to create a Saturday morning animated series based on the original show, with most of the cast returning to voice their roles. It was an admirable effort, with some episodes written by many of the writers of TOS. In the end, this series is more of a curiosity than anything else. It looks and feels even more dated than the live-action series in terms of visuals, and the restrictions of Saturday morning cartoons kept the storylines from being as good as the original show. This is yet another missed opportunity.

New Star Trek series on Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus will be the exclusive home to at least three new Star Trek series.

Strange New Worlds

strange new worlds

This is a planned spinoff of Discovery that will take place onboard the original U.S.S. Enterprise, just a few years before Captain James Kirk takes command. Anson Mount will return as Captain Christopher Pike, as well as Ethan Peck as the young Ensign Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. This show will hopefully learn from the lessons of Enterprise and Voyager, with a mix of cool new encounters combined with some nods to the TOS era. There’s no release date yet for this series.

prodigy

Originally set to debut on the Nickelodeon cable channel, this will now be a Paramount Plus Star Trek series. It’s also the first Trek show that was created specifically for kids. The 3D animated show will center on a group of children who find an abandoned Starfleet ship, and decide to take it and go on adventures on their own. Kate Mulgrew will return to voice her Voyager role of Captain Janeway in this series, or rather a hologram version of Janeway. There’s no word on when Prodigy will debut.

section 31

This is yet another planned Discovery spin-off, this time focusing on the mysterious, and sometimes evil, Federation agency known as Section 31. Michelle Yeoh, who played the Mirror Universe leader Emperor Georgiou, is expected to be the lead for this series. You may remember that Emperor Georgiou, after crossing over to the main universe, joined Section 31. There’s still no launch date for this series.

That’s our look at the current and new Star Trek series on Paramount Plus.

What to watch this weekend: new tv shows and movies to stream on netflix, hulu, prime video and more.

Everything new to stream this weekend on all your favorite streaming apps from Netflix to Hulu to ... [+] Amazon Prime and more.

For the second week in a row, I’m posting my weekend streaming guide on Wednesday evening instead of Friday. This is because I’ve noticed that a lot of new shows release on Wednesday and Thursday so it makes some sense to post the guide a bit early and then update it over the weekend if I realize I’ve missed anything.

This week I’m also including a couple VOD (Video On Demand) releases so we have quite a long list of shows and movies to get through, including a couple theatrical releases. From pirates on the high seas to epic space operas to vampire ballerinas, here’s what to watch this weekend. Enjoy!

Be sure to let me know if there’s something I missed on Twitter or Facebook . Check out last week’s streaming guide here:

Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver (April 19th on Netflix)

star trek like show on hulu

The Best Gaming Mouse That’ll Improve Your Aim

I had mixed feelings about Zach Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part 1: Child Of Fire , but mostly because I went in with very low expectations and then it ended up being not as bad as I’d expected—though still not great! We’ll see if Part 2 “The Scargiver” can give fans a satisfying conclusion. If you like campy space opera and don’t care much about a super derivative story, this might be a fun weekend watch.

Update: I’ve watched the film and you can read my review here . I was not a fan.

Under The Bridge (April 17th on Hulu)

I’ve been on a huge mystery kick lately and Under The Bridge looks like it will scratch that itch nicely. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went missing in British Columbia after attending a party with friends, we follow Godfrey (Riley Keough) and local police officer (Lily Gladstone) as they dig into the lives of the teen girls accused of Virk’s murder.

Freud’s Last Session (April 20th on Netflix)

A fictional account of Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and Christian apologist and author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) having a conversation about God, the universe and everything. I’ve been wanting to watch this for a long time and now it’s finally coming to Netflix.

Migration (April 19th on Peacock)

Here’s one for the whole family from the makers of Despicable Me and Minions all about ducks and other birds migrating, which I suppose is fitting for a streaming service called Peacock. This one came to theaters last December and scored decently well with critics (72% on Rotten Tomatoes) and better with audiences (88%).

Black Sails Seasons 1 - 4 (Netflix, April 17th)

I’ve written about why you should stream the Starz historical pirate drama Black Sails now that it’s on Netflix already , but figured I’d include it in this guide as well. It’s a great show (that gets better as you go) especially if you enjoy swashbuckling adventure and plenty of gritty scheming and skullduggery.

Late Night With The Devil (April 19th on Shudder)

I’ve been wanting to see this one ever since I first saw its super creepy trailer, but I haven’t made it to the movies much lately. Fortunately, Late Night With The Devil lands on Shudder this Friday and I think I’m going to sign up for a free 7-day trial to watch it. And then try try try to remember to cancel before they start charging me for it! This movie looks so freaky! Edit: I have AMC+ which I just realized includes Shudder, so nevermind!

In The Land Of Saints And Sinners (April 16th VOD)

Liam Neeson in a gritty Irish crime thriller set in the 1970s. Looks better than anything Neeson has done in a long, long time. You can still catch this in theaters but now it’s on Video On Demand as well.

Buy on Amazon

Dune Part 2 (April 16th VOD)

I had mixed feelings about Dune 2 , which I found visually and sonically amazing but a bit thin in terms of plot and character. Still, if you missed this in theaters (which is where you really should see it) now you can stream on VOD with a later HBO/Max release.

What’s Ongoing

I would love to include Amazon’s Fallout series in the “Ongoing” section of my guide, but since they decided to release all the episodes at once, it’s going the way of pretty much every Netflix show that only ever pops up in one guide and then disappears forever. You can see that show and some Netflix one-and-doners in last week’s guide, however. Also, as this guide is already fairly long, I’m going to move through the ongoing section a bit quicker and not include trailers.

Sugar (Apple TV)

Colin Farrell as a private detective in a stylish noir mystery drama set in Tokyo and LA involving the mysterious disappearance of a Hollywood producer’s granddaughter. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen so far. Episodes air each Friday on Apple TV+.

Shogun (Hulu)

Easily one of my favorite shows of the year, Shogun brings us into feudal Japan in a time of upheaval, as protestants and catholics vie for control of trade routes and the political factions in Japan prepare for war. New episodes air every Tuesday on Hulu.

Read my recap/review of Shogun episode 9 right here.

The Sympathizer (HBO / Max)

The Sympathizer

A spy thriller set during the Vietnam war in which a North Vietnamese spy infiltrates the South Vietnamese army before fleeing to the United States where he continues to gather intelligence for the Viet Cong. Check out Robert Downey Jr.’s new look! New episodes air Sundays on HBO / Max.

Other shows currently airing include:

  • Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth season is airing every Thursday on Paramount+. This actually reminds me that I never watched Season 4. I have mixed feelings about the show. It had some great moments in its first three seasons but plenty of stuff irked me. I’m behind on all things Star Trek, truth be told.
  • Parish on AMC with Giancarlo Esposito. I tried the first episode of this out and got a little bored and decided to watch something else. I have not yet returned to this show, and I’m not sure I will. But Esposito is terrific in The Gentlemen on Netflix which I’m absolutely loving. What a fun show!
  • A Gentleman in Moscow on Paramount+ starring Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, about a Russian aristocrat under house arrest following the Soviet Revolution. This one is good. I need to write something up about it. New episodes come out on Sundays.
  • X-Men 97 on Disney+ brings back the classic, vintage feel of the old X-Men series. It continues airing on Wednesdays and really is a lot of fun.
  • Mary and George on Starz. A sex-fueled historical drama of political intrigue, deception and black humor set during the reign of King James I—loosely based on true events. Julianne Moore is the main draw here. New episodes air each Friday.

In Theaters

This may be a streaming guide but I always try to post one or two theatrical releases as well because going to the movies is awesome.

The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare (April 19th)

Guy Ritchie did such a great job with The Gentlemen on Netflix (you really should watch it!) I can’t help but be excited to go see The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare in theaters. The film follows a group of colorful, off-the-books special forces types during WWII as they go give Nazis a good beat down. The Special Operations Executive—commissioned by Winston Churchill in 1940—is led by Gus March-Phillips (Henry Cavill) and sets out to disrupt German operations as a sort of precursor to modern black ops tactics. Looks like fun to me!

Abigail (April 19th)

A kidnapping of a young ballerina goes horribly wrong when it turns out, well, she’s a vampire and the daughter of another, even more famous, vampire. Soon the hunters become the hunted. It looks like good campy horror fun and so far the reviews are mostly positive.

Blood For Dust (In Theaters and VOD April 19th)

This bare-bones indie crime thriller was pretty good— you can read my review here —and Scoot McNairy in particular did a great job as a down-on-his-luck salesman drawn into a criminal underworld where things go horribly wrong. It’s also fun to see Game Of Thrones alum Kit Harington play a bad guy with a handlebar mustache.

And that’s all for now, folks. Be sure to let me know if you have any recommendations for me as well!

6 TV shows you need to watch in April

C an you believe it’s almost April? While it might feel like you were just ringing in the new year, spring is already on the horizon, which also means a whole new selection of TV shows to sink your teeth into. With dramas, thrillers, shows based on video games, and even a Star Trek franchise show’s final season, this month’s picks are delightfully diverse.

Half of the six TV shows you need to watch in April are shows returning with new seasons and the other half are new titles that may well become your favorites. They are available through top streaming services, so make sure to bookmark these titles, their premiere dates, and where to stream them so you don’t miss out.

American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 (April 3)

The 12th season of the popular horror anthology series premiered in September 2023, but fans have waited seven months for part 2, which is finally here. As with every season, American Horror Story: Delicate features an entirely new storyline with new characters, who are played this time around by Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, and others.

As the first story to be based on a novel (Danielle Valentine’s Delicate Condition ), American Horror Story: Delicate centers around Anna (Roberts), an actress who is desperate to get pregnant, but believes someone is trying to prevent this from happening. She becomes obsessed with this idea, unsure if she’s just hallucinating or if her paranoid feelings are justified. Beneath the surface entertainment of the thrilling story is social commentary about topical issues like abortion rights, pregnancy, and gaslighting. AHS devotees might miss regular cast members like Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe, but the new cast brings a fresh take to the unique story in this season.

Stream American Horror Story: Delicate on Hulu.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 (April 4)

Ending its run after this fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery flips back to a decade prior to the events in Star Trek: The Original Series . The setting begins in the 23rd Century, though the timeline jumps ahead by the end of season 2 to be well into the 32nd century, where the rest of the show takes place. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is a science specialist-turned-captain who leads her crew aboard the starship Discovery. Fresh off reassignment when her previous actions start a war, Burnham embarks on new adventures, investigating everything from rogue AIs to mysterious signals.

As the seventh Star Trek series overall and the first since Star Trek: Enterprise  ended in 2005, Star Trek: Discovery was a huge draw for CBS All Access (since rebranded as Paramount+ ) when it premiered in 2017. The series was followed by the show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is gearing up for its third season. The upcoming movie Star Trek: Section 31 will serve as a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. Although it has receivied praise for its prosthetic makeup and visual effects, Martin-Green’s gripping performance is really what fuels Star Trek: Discovery and its story.

Stream Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+.

Fallout (April 12)

The latest in a series of shows based on popular video game franchises, Fallout brings the role-playing game to life on the small screen. The postapocalyptic story is about a group of survivors residing in underground bunkers known as Vaults. They have escaped the resource war above ground, and are hunkering down in fear of a potential nuclear war. Lucy (Ella Purnell of Yellowjackets ) grew up in the vaults and decides to venture outside to explore the desolate wasteland above. Once there, she realizes the world outside of the fallout bunkers is more dangerous, savage, and terrifying than she ever imagined.

The Fallout TV show is developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, co-creators of the Westworld series. Nolan is also known as the creator of the sci-fi series Person of Interest and co-writer of movies like The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises , and Interstellar . The series also stars Walton Goggins ( The Righteous Gemstones ) as a mutated gunslinger called  The Ghoul, Aaron Moten as Maximus, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Kyle MacLachlan as Lucy’s father, Hank. Fallout is a must-watch for fans of the video game, especially as it’s expected to remain faithful to the original story. But even those unfamiliar with the story and game will appreciate the series as another great entry in the postapocalyptic subgenre.

Welcome to Wrexham season 3 (April 18)

Right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decided to do something totally unexpected and purchased a flailing Welsh football association club. In true Ted Lasso fashion, the pair believed they could turn the team around and inject much-needed passion (and funds) into the project. Why not chronicle their journey of trying to bring this club back to life in a docuseries? They did, and they call it Welcome to Wrexham.

Inspired by sports docuseries like Sunderland ‘Til I Die, Last Chance U , and Cheer , Welcome to Wrexham follows the new owners, but also gives fans a look behind the scenes at the players and others involved in the club, as well as the games. While Wrexham has yet to achieve its dream of making it to the Premier League, the team has been consistently moving up the ranks. Season 3 will, for the first time, premiere in spring, coinciding with the league games. The heartfelt, funny, and inspirational show has become a hit among fans who recognize the passion behind it.

Stream Welcome to Wrexham on Hulu.

Knuckles (April 26)

If you love Sonic the Hedgehog , Knuckles should be on your list of shows to watch this month. The miniseries is based on the Sega video game series and serves as a spinoff of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. The story takes places between the events in Sonic the Hedgehog 2  and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and centers around Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba. The super-strong echidna, who has now moved to Earth, is adjusting to his new life and setting. His primary job, however, is training Wade Whipple (Adam Pally), a dim-witted deputy sheriff, on how to be an echidna warrior, and, of course, how to help save the world.

Also featuring Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Scott Mescudi, Christopher Lloyd, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles is a fun live-action movie to watch with the whole family.

The Veil (April 30)

Those who have been waiting anxiously for the return of The Handmaid’s Tale can check out Elisabeth Moss in The Veil in the meantime. She stars in this limited series thriller about two women traveling together from Istanbul to Paris, then London. But this isn’t a joyful road trip: one woman has a dangerous secret and the other is desperate to expose it before thousands of lives are lost.

Written by Steven Knight, best known for creating the BBC series Peaky Blinders , The Veil is all about truth, lies, and two women playing a game with stakes higher than they ever imagined. Moss, who learned a British accent for the role, also serves as a producer of the series.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5's Captain Rayner Ran His Ship Like a Pirate

Callum Keith Rennie also discusses coming into 'Discovery's final season, getting into prosthetics, and how much he has in common with Rayner.

The Big Picture

  • Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner brings conflict and depth to Star Trek: Discovery 's final season.
  • Rennie discusses his experience on Star Trek: Discovery , praising the supportive cast and crew, despite the initial challenges of joining an established series for its last season.
  • In Season 5, Episode 4 "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner must work together within a time bubble to save the universe.

As Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) embarks on one last adventure with her crew, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is bringing a few new characters along for the ride. Chief among those newcomers is the blunt, war-worn Captain Rayner. Played by Battlestar Galactica alum Callum Keith Rennie , Rayner is Burnham's new second in command on the Discovery , taking over after Saru ( Doug Jones ) took a different position at Starfleet.

Having lived through The Burn, Rayner doesn't have time for niceties and butts heads with Burnham almost immediately — so naturally, she takes it upon herself to give him a second chance when Starfleet is ready to cut him loose. Last week's episode saw him, rightfully, put in his place a bit as Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) attempted to help him connect with the crew, much to his chagrin. In Season 5 Episode 4, "Face the Strange," Rayner and Burnham are thrown into a time bubble, forcing them to work together if they ever want to get back to the correct timeline and prevent the universe from being destroyed.

Ahead of the episode, I sat down with Rennie to dig into Rayner's backstory, what we can expect from him in the rest of the season, and what it will take for Rayner to truly connect with the crew of Discovery . During our conversation, we also discussed Rennie's history with sci-fi, what it was like joining Discovery for the show's final season, and what he's taking away from the whole experience.

Star Trek: Discovery

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

Rennie is no stranger to science fiction, having had roles in such series as The Umbrella Academy , Jessica Jones, and Battlestar Galactica. As Battlestar Galactica was the series that turned me into a sci-fi fan, and perhaps Rennie's most recognizable role, I had to ask him about being a part of such massive and beloved franchises within the genre. "It's amazing," he said. For Rennie, even though Battlestar was also a reboot of a classic series , the show's success was a lot less predictable than the mainstay that is Star Trek . He explained, "Like, say Battlestar , when I started on that I had no idea where that one was gonna go. Discovery was already very established , but I actually didn't let any of that into my [head], because I went, “That's not gonna help.” So, I didn’t. Now, I'm feeling the world of it. Now, I'm sensing what the world of Discovery is and how many people love it, and how it fits. "

Discovery also isn't his first experience with Star Trek , "I watched the original. That was my thing, and that was it," Rennie told me. While he may have missed some of the series' in between, saying, "There's big chunks of time where I just didn't watch a lot of TV, so I missed all of the other stuff," he'll always make time for The Original Series when he comes across it, "even if the old Star Trek comes on, I'll still watch it because that was my Star Trek . Jim Kirk, and all of that. "

While we've gotten a pretty good sense of who Rayner is in these first four episodes, most of his backstory remains a mystery. Rennie revealed that "some backstory comes up in a few episodes." Part of his gruff exterior will be explained as we'll "get a sense of why he's maybe got a chip on his shoulder and has some unprocessed resentments about a bunch of things that maybe have played out in his work in a negative way."

Rennie Calls 'Star Trek: Discovery's Latest Episode "Amazing"

"Face the Strange," is such a classic Star Trek episode, employing the ever-entertaining sci-fi trope of sticking our main characters in a time loop, both to put an obstacle in their path as well as to bring them face to face with some of their own demons. For Rennie, the episode really put the science in science fiction. "It was like, 'Whoa! What's happening? I don't get it.' There's just so much science stuff and talk, so much jumping about to places and history and stuff." But he had high praise for his fellow castmates as well as the crew behind the camera." Lee [Rose] being the director, you're in great hands. Being in scenes with Sonequa, you know that you're gonna be in it , and it was great. I watched it again last night, and there’s just an amazing amount of stuff in there. It was just an amazing episode. "

In this episode, Burnham and Rayner are tossed back in time to the first season of Discovery , bringing them both face to face with the version of Burnham who's fresh off her own demotion in Starfleet . Throughout the episode, it becomes quite clear that Burnham and Rayner have a lot more in common than either of them might have realized. When asked if this experience might put them more on equal footing, Rennie confirmed that "he's learned an understanding of the crew." He went on to point out that we haven't seen the relationship that Rayner had with his own crew.

He explained: "We're not on the Antares talking about his crew, which I think is an important part that we missed, where you go, 'How did I see my people on my particular ship? And how well did I know them?' No one's asking me how well I knew everybody because I did, but if I've only been there a brief time, you're only gonna have facts." He admits that it is important for Rayner to connect past the surface level. "Through that particular episode, you learn and go, 'Yes, it is good to know what people are up to and where they're from,' because in that particular instance, it saved us. So, I learned a thing, and I give a, 'Yes. Got it. Thank you.'"

Rayner Will Have to Shorten the Distance Between Himself and the Discovery Crew

While it doesn't sound like we'll be getting any flashbacks to Rayner's time on the Antares Rennie believes that he'd spent a similar amount of time with that crew as Michael has with hers. "We didn't get to inhabit that, I get to make it up in my own mind," he said. "But for me, it was more like a pirate ship that I had. " While Rayner comes off as the more stubborn, stick-to-the-mission Captain between him and Burnham, Rennie doesn't think he was quite so strict on his own ship. He said:

"That's the way I perceived it. It wasn't some rigid, completely stoic, boss fest, but a little bit of a wild card ship. We're gonna go into things that nobody else wants to go into, or knows how to deal with, but we would. "

While the walls around Rayner are still pretty high, Rennie explained that we will see him "shorten the distance" he's put between himself and the crew of the Discovery. "There's a great bit, there's an episode where Burnham leaves me again to take control of the ship. There's an interaction with everybody in a certain way because they don't like me yet. [Laughs] And I need some help a little bit, but I've created a distance, and I have to shorten that distance between everybody." He went on to say there are plenty of "fun dynamics" to look forward to and Rayner's insistence on keeping everyone at arm's length will likely come back to bite him.

Star Trek has quite a long list of original alien species created for the franchise, and Rayner just happens to be a Kellerun, a race that hasn't been seen since Deep Space Nine . In classic Trek fashion, Kelleruns appear mostly human with the most visible difference being the shape of the ears. As he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Leonard Nimoy and any actor who has ever played a Vulcan or a Romulan, I asked Rennie about getting into prosthetics for the role. "Those guys are great. Rocky [Faulkner] was great, Nicola [Bendrey] was great." While it was certainly an extra step the process was brief enough that it didn't bother him to come to set a bit earlier than usual. "That was probably an hour, and I really didn't think about that enough to go, 'Oh, that's right. I have to get up earlier.' But I think we got it down to an hour and a bit for just the ears because there’s a lot of stuff on them."

Despite the agonizing wait of sitting in front of a mirror for an hour, Rennie noted that Faulkner and Bendrey made the make-up experience as fun as it could possibly have been. He said: "I don't love just sitting there looking at myself for an hour, but there's music and great company and coffee, and it became a really sweet part of the day, and then another sweet part of the day where I download. " It wasn't his first time getting into prosthetics, but his previous experience had been brief. After playing Rayner across an entire season, Rennie admitted by the end, removing the glue actually started to feel like you'd expect pulling costume glue off your ears to feel. "There was a point near the end where the glue-on, glue-off became quite painful for a while."

The Support of the Cast and the Fans Are Highlights of Rennie's 'Star Trek' Experience

While this is Rennie's first season on the show, it's the final bow for Star Trek: Discovery . When asked what he'd be taking away from this experience, he had nothing but high praise for the cast and crew. As a newcomer on a well-established show, jumping into the fifth season had a bit of a learning curve. "I found that coming into the show was difficult for me because it was unlike a show that I'd been on before. It was already very well established." He went on to say:

"I pat myself on the back because I made it through, and there was this wonderful group energy that helped me do that. The good naturedness of the show was something that I maybe haven't worked on. There was a wholehearted goodness about it, which was quite nice, which overlapped into how people treated each other and mutual respect. Also, I kind of blocked out all Star Treks in my mind, so I'm there not thinking of Star Trek history. I'm just doing scene-to-scene and working on this stuff, and then it finishes, and then I forget that there's an incredible vast following of the show that somehow you are now part of it like that. All of that, this is all relatively new to me."

As a new addition to an already established group, I pointed out that it seemed as though Rennie's experience mirrored that of his characters, and he agreed. "I'm excited for people to see the season. And then, coming into it playing, “I don't want to be liked. It doesn't matter if I'm liked. I'm there to do my job, like Rayner, and I'm doing it. And then there's the after-effect of an incredible fan base that seems to be very supportive ."

What’s the best destination for spring TV ? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.

Meanwhile, Hulu will continue airing episodes of FX’s “The Veil” and gear up for FX’s “Welcome to Wrexham,” now in its fourth season. The streamer is also hyping up the original documentary “The Contestant,” about the man who spent 15 months isolated, starved, and naked in a tiny room while his movements were broadcast all over Japan. The streamer continues to be home for all your favorite next-day network shows, including ABC and FOX.

Top Pick: “Black Twitter: A People’s History” (Available only on Hulu)

When Jason Parham first published the oral history of Black Twitter, his three-part “Wired” series ended with the 2021 insurrection. Now in the hands of executive producers Prentice Penny and Joie Jacoby, the history explodes on screen in motion and color, with gifs, comments, and videos — like Twitter itself come alive. Many of the original participants in Parham’s piece return to chart the rise of the internet’s hub for culture, commentary, and creativity, while Penny and Jacoby move the story forward into the present (including Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform). The three-part docuseries premieres in full on May 9.

The orville season 4 seemingly confirmed by seth macfarlane after 2-year wait.

Creator and star Seth MacFarlane seemingly confirms that The Orville season 4 is happening, two years after season 3 premiered on Hulu.

  • Seth MacFarlane confirms The Orville isn't over yet, hinting at season 4.
  • MacFarlane describes The Orville as a passion project and hints at more episodes to come.
  • Fans of The Orville can perhaps look forward to future seasons, according to Seth MacFarlane's recent comments.

Seth MacFarlane seemingly confirms The Orville season 4, two years after the show last premiered original episodes. A comedy-slanted take on Star Trek -style space adventures, MacFarlane’s sci-fi show premiered on Fox back in 2017, moving over to Hulu exclusively for season 3 in 2022. In early 2024, MacFarlane sparked hopes of The Orville season 4 happening, saying that he’s “ working on ” getting new episodes launched.

A few months after that promising update, MacFarlane has stoked further hopes that his cult favorite sci-fi show has not been permanently sent to spacedock, stating that The Orville is not yet over. " The Orville was a passion project, I say ‘was’ but I don’t really mean ‘was’ because there will be more ," the series creator said in an appearance on The Mike Henry Show (around 17:20 of the video clip below):

Why MacFarlane May Not Be Confirming Orville Season 4 (Yet)

MacFarlane states that The Orville “ is not yet over ,” but his new remarks are not an absolute confirmation that season 4 is on the way. It’s possible that the “ more ” MacFarlane has on tap will take the adventures of The Orville and its plucky crew outside the realm of series TV and into another medium. Indeed, the show creator has already spun off Orville content to book form, turning an unproduced season 3 episode into the novella The Orville: Sympathy for the Devil . The show has also been spunoff into a trio of Dark Horse Comics miniseries.

While it’s possible that MacFarlane has something in mind other than another season of the show, his new statement in conjunction with his January 2024 interview revelation that he’s “working on” The Orville should raise hopes that the series’ run has not yet come to an end. Even if The Orville season 4 isn’t presently in the works, MacFarlane’s love for the sci-fi series is obvious, and it’s likely he will keep creating content in his Star Trek -inspired universe, in every available medium, for as long as he can.

How MacFarlane's Ted Could Help The Orville Live On

MacFarlane has expanded his small screen presence with the Peacock show Ted , a miniseries prequel to his pair of Ted movies, following the exploits of a foul-mouthed sentient teddy bear, with MacFarlane himself voicing the titular toy. Ted has indeed been a surprise hit for Peacock, setting a viewership record for the streamer when it premiered, and re-invigorating a franchise that seemed like it had come to an end after 2015's movie Ted 2 .

Chances of Ted season 2 happening seem strong now that the first run of episodes has caught on with audiences while doing fairly well with critics, as reflected in the show's 72% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But the success of MacFarlane's new comedy streaming show may have a positive effect on the creator's on-hiatus series, boosting chances of The Orville season 4 finally getting underway. If Hulu doesn't wish to continue the adventures of The Orville , perhaps Peacock could pick up the show, and build upon the solid relationship they've already established with MacFarlane.

The Orville seasons 1-3 are available to watch on Hulu.

MacFarlane indeed has a lot of potential projects on his plate, to go along with Family Guy , which continues its long run with no end in sight. Ted season 2 might be front-and-center at Peacock, but The Orville remains a passion project for its creator, and season 4 is very much a possibility, assuming there is a streamer that wishes to give it a home.

Created by Seth McFarlane and set in the 25th century, The Orville follows the crew of the titular ship and its captain, Ed Mercer (McFarlane) as they explore the galaxy. Inspired by Star Trek, it also spoofs the sci-fi classic, taking a comedic approach to its serialized story and science-fiction premise. Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, and Scott Grimes star alongside McFarlane as part of an ensemble cast.
