Ludovico Einaudi’s Journey Through Italian Music

ludovico einaudi tour italy

The boom of classical music in Italy is commonly associated with Verdi, Puccini, Vivaldi, and Rossini ; but the heyday of composition is not over in Italy. In the current landscape of contemporary music, Ludovico Einaudi is the genre’s shining beacon. An acclaimed composer whose oeuvre finds its definition in the notion of a journey across sound, Einaudi brings a contemporary edge to classical music.

Ludovico Einaudi

Born in 1955 in Turin, composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi was the son of Giulio Einaudi, founder of the Einaudi publishing house, and nephew of Luigi Einaudi, President of the Italian Republic from 1948 to 1955. The young composer began his musical career playing keyboards in the jazz-rock group Venegoni & Co, while continuing his studies at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, from which he graduated with a degree in classical music. It was only after his graduation that he started to define himself as a classical musician, composing both orchestral and chamber operas.

Einaudi’s first great success arrived with the album ‘ Le Onde ’ (1996), which received wide international acclaim. Based on the eponymous novel by Virginia Woolf, ‘ The Waves ’, ‘Le Onde’ is a set of piano ballads that would later become characteristic of Einaudi’s style – a style that refers to the classical tradition of the past while drawing on clear folk, pop, rock and contemporary influences, with a circular, enveloping and minimalist sound. The booklet attached to the album offers a reading key, provided by the composer himself: “If it were a story, it would have been set on the waterfront of a long beach. A beach with no beginning and no end. The story of a man walking along this shore, a man who perhaps never meets anyone there. His gaze lingers from time to time to observe some object or fragment taken from the sea, the footprints of a crab, a lone seagull. The landscape is always the sand, the sky, a few clouds, the sea. Only the waves change, always the same and always different, smaller, larger, shorter, longer.” After the highly successful ‘Le Onde’, Einaudi published the album ‘Eden Roc’ (1999), a collaborative effort with the Armenian musician Djivan Gasparyan , in which he continued his experimental research, adding a string quintet to the piano.

Soon after, in 2004, ‘Una Mattina’ climbed to the top of the British classical music charts; a song characterised by undulating melodies in motion, spaced out with accelerations and suspensions. From that moment on, Einaudi embarked on a long period of worldwide tours, with concerts that often sold out and garnered great critical praise. During this time, he had the chance to meet international artists from different traditions and musical inspirations, and with whom he collaborated musically; among them were Paolo Fresu , Rodrigo Leão , Mercan Dede and To Rococo Rot (Robert and Ronald Lippok). The 2006 album ‘Divenire’ became an immediate hit with over 80,000 copies sold in Italy and a number of awards. The entire album revolves around only three tracks: ’Divenire’, ‘Primavera’ and ‘Svanire’, songs inspired by three paintings by Segantini : ‘Life’, ‘Nature’ and ‘Death’. The tour that brought ‘Divenire’ to the world’s most renowned and sought-after concert halls finished in 2007 at the Royal Albert Hall in London .

The intriguing ‘Nightbook’ was released in 2009, and defined by the pianist as his ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ in an unambiguous reference to Pink Floyd’s revolutionary album; ‘ each song ’, he says, ‘is a chapter in a story, the facet of a prism, a gaze on the experiences that belong to the most dreamlike, the innermost side of ourselves. It’s a dream where anything can happen.’ The album provided a contrast to the acclaimed ‘Divenire’, whose sounds evoked the movement towards the world, the flow of life; on the contrary, ‘Nightbook’ analyses the inner, the psyche, the deep aspects of reality that refer to a mystical dimension. Ludovico Einaudi’s latest album, ‘In a Time Lapse’, was released in 2013. Here, the tracks are played and lived by an incredibly wide harmony of sounds, including the piano, strings, percussion and electronics. ‘When you become conscious that our time is limited’ – the pianist explains – ‘that is the time when you try to fill that empty space with all your energy and again to live each moment of your life as fully as when you were a child.A period of time that does not freeze the moment but rather includes all of our experience, our past, present and future, our expectations, our desires, our limits, all that we are.’ The whole of ‘In a Time Lapse’ explores worlds of new sounds and new arrangements that come together in a layered, consistent and accurate language.

The main characteristic of Einaudi’s music is its ‘transversality’, thanks to which he is able to step away from the canons of classical music as a genre, and to mix and merge it with sounds of pop, rock, folk, jazz, electronic and ethnic music. Einaudi’s albums inevitably focus on and revolve around a suite – a direct reference to the classical idea of a novel that’s divided into several chapters. Though each piece carries its own individuality, it is by listening to them all that a complete view of the whole, and the idea behind the entire album emerge. The sound world evoked by Einaudi happens around the piano, as the composer explains, ‘the piano is my pencil, and notebook on which to put my notes. In the piano I found my voice, I live in it in a certain way, I identify myself in that sound.’

Ludovico Einaudi in Concert 2011

The vast story Einaudi wants to tell in the meticulous construction of his albums is thus peppered with other sounds, other instruments that create the path the pianist wants us to take with his songs – sounds and instruments that emerge unexpected, but dazzling. Listening to the music of Ludovico Einaudi is a journey through the magical sounds that evoke deep and ancestral feelings, and that can help to understand the true magic of music.

Beloved by millions over the world, Italian composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi makes his long-awaited return to Esplanade after his sold-out Singapore debut in 2020.

You know an artist has made an impact when they are referred to mononymously—and it’s safe to say that Einaudi can be included in this category. Across several decades, the contemporary classical icon has garnered millions of fans from the world over for his singular sound, an amalgamation of influences such as minimalism, neo-classical, pop and other experimental forms.

Having started his career in the 1980s as a composer for theatre and ballet, Einaudi began to gain more recognition for his work when he ventured into film soundtrack compositions in the 1990s, entering mainstream consciousness after award-winning films such as Les Intouchables. What remains the most compelling for listeners are his uniquely evocative original compositions, as evidenced by the success of his 2013 album, In A Time Lapse. In a testament to his timeless sound, the track Experience from this album found virality on the social media app TikTok in 2023. With multiple chart-topping albums and streams that count into the billions, Einaudi is undoubtedly one of the world’s best known classical music artists today.

In 2022, the composer released Underwater , his first solo piano album after more than 20 years. Comprising evocative, interior piano works, the album exactly reflects what many have felt during the pandemic—trapped, lost, struggling to tread water. Introspective and emotionally honest, the album is a mark of the universality of Einaudi’s compositions.

Pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin on November 23rd, 1955. He began to study music at the Conservatory of Turin and graduated under Azio Corghi at the Conservatory of Milan. In 1982, his talents won him a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival. He spent the next several years composing for ballet, cinema and theatre, as well as numerous pieces for orchestra and ensemble. It was with Le Onde [ The Waves ] (1996), his first solo album inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel, that he truly caught the piano world’s attention.

The score he wrote in 2002 for the remake of Doctor Zhivago triumphed at the New York Film Festival, confirming the increasing prestige of his soundtracks: Not of This World (2000), Light of My Eyes (2001), The Untouchables (2011), Samba (2014), and many more. He began performing in increasingly important venues, such as La Scala of Milan the Hangar Bicocca and the Royal Albert Hall. In his next studio album, Una mattina (2004), Einaudi's music becomes more introspective, while in the following Divenire it expands, driven by the sonorities of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Both records, which were already topping the classical charts, also crossed over into the pop charts. He was the only classical musician to play at the first iTunes festival.

In 2009, he released Cloudland , with Robert and Ronald Lippok, and Nightbook . The peak performance of his European and American tour was once again at the Royal Albert Hall, recorded live and later released. For two consecutive summers, he conducted the Orchestra della Notte della Taranta. In 2013, he released In a Time Lapse , a reflection on time recorded in a monastery, in which his piano was accompanied by strings, percussion and electronic tracks. The world tour that followed featured remarkable performances at venues such as Sydney Opera House and Arena of Verona. The album Elements (2015) was recorded over three months in his home studio in the Langhe countryside. In 2016, he performed Elegy for the Arctic , commissioned by Greenpeace, on a floating platform amidst the ice in the Arctic Ocean. The same year marked the debut of Dieci Notti at Teatro Dal Verme, Milan, which would become an annual concert series.

Emerging from long winter walks in the mountains, Seven Days Walking was an ambitious project of seven records, released monthly from March to October 2019. During this time, he resumed touring major venues, including seven consecutive sold-out shows at London’s Barbican. Performances and tours were interrupted by the pandemic, but some of his music from Seven Days Walking and Elements continued to walk on its own in highly acclaimed films such as Nomadland by Chloé Zhao and The Father by Florian Zeller. Much of his musical production for the screen is collected in Cinema (2021), preceded by two collections recorded during the lockdown and released in 2020: 12 songs from home and Einaudi Undiscovered , a series of lesser-known songs by the composer.

In the summer of 2021, Einaudi took his music back to nature, in a series of eleven concerts immersed in the breathtaking scenery of natural landscapes. It was the experience of suspended time during the lockdown that led to the new solo piano album, Underwater (2022), “a metaphor for fluidity without external interference”. In October 2022, he received the Opus Klassik award for the album Underwater , going on to tour the album to great success in the American continent, Europe and Central Asia.

ludovico einaudi tour italy

Composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi is one of the best-selling classical artists of all time. But how much do you know about the man behind the music?

Listen to Ludovico Einaudi’s new album Einaudi Undiscovered on Apple Music and Spotify and scroll down to discover more about his life and music.

Einaudi’s family and early life

Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin in 1955 to a publisher father and an amateur pianist mother. His maternal grandfather was a pianist, conductor, and composer (named Waldo Aldrovandi). Meanwhile, his paternal grandfather was an economist and journalist who went on to become President of Italy between 1948 and 1955.

Ludovico Einaudi worked with composers Berio and Stockhausen

Einaudi trained at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan. Then, in 1982 Einaudi took orchestration classes with Luciano Berio, the Italian experimental composer. He later said: “Luciano Berio did some interesting work with African vocal music and did some arrangements of Beatles songs, and he taught me that there is a sort of dignity inside music. I learnt orchestration from him and a very open way of thinking about music.”

Later on, the composer worked as an assistant for Berio and for the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.

How did Ludovico Einaudi become famous?

Ludovico Einaudi started out writing music in fairly traditional forms, such as chamber and orchestral music before turning his hand to film music, writing scores for films, including This is England and I’m Still Here .

His first solo album, Le Onde , was released in 1996 and was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel, The Waves . But it was the follow-up that really brought Einaudi to the world’s attention.

Einaudi released I Giorni in 2006. The album was inspired by his travels in Africa, and the title track caught the attention of DJ Greg James, who played it on his BBC Radio 1 show. The rest is history: the track entered the UK Singles Chart at No. 32 – an almost-unheard-of feat for a classical track.

Einaudi in the Arctic

In 2016 he wrote a work called “Elegy for the Arctic” and partnered with Greenpeace to perform the work on a floating platform in front of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier in Svalbard, Norway.

Ludovico Einaudi’s most famous songs

Many of Einaudi’s pieces have become famous as stand-alone songs. Nuvole Bianche is currently his most-streamed piece, taken from his album Una Mattina . It has featured in television shows, including Ricky Gervais’ Derek, and has now been streamed over 14 million times. Divenire is another popular track: it’s featured in many adverts and shows, but perhaps most notably it was used in ITV’s Love Island .

Ludovico Einaudi, Alessia Tondo - Nuvole Bianche (Live at the Old Vic Tunnels / 2011)

Seven Days Walking

Ludovico Einaudi announced a large-scale project in early 2019: Seven Days Walking was made up of seven albums of music released over the course of seven months. The albums were inspired by time the composer had spent walking in the Alps. He said the heavy snow helped his thoughts “roam free inside the storm, where all shapes, stripped bare by the cold, lost their contours and colors.”

Here’s how the composer himself described the project: “I associated everything with walking, with the experience of following the same routes over and over, discovering new details each time. And so, in the end, I decided to thread them all together in a sort of musical labyrinth, a little like stepping inside the twists and turns of the creative process, to understand how a musical idea can develop in multiple directions, and changing once again at the moment in which it is heard.”

12 Songs From Home

12 Songs From Home , released in May 2020, was recorded at the composer’s home during the coronavirus lockdown. The solo piano album was recorded on Einaudi’s own upright piano and features some of the best-known works from his career.

Ludovico Einaudi explained, “I recorded 12 Songs From Home between March and April 2020 during the peak of Italy’s lockdown. In March, I started to play live concerts regularly on social media. Switching on my phone to connect for 30-40 minutes with the world has been a beautiful and intimate alternative to the spring tour that I regrettably had to postpone. This new release is the memory of those home live concerts, my memory of this time, the memory of a strange and new atmosphere that we won’t forget.”

Einaudi Undiscovered

Ludovico Einaudi released Einaudi Undiscovered on September 18, 2020. It features previously unreleased tracks and highlights curated by the composer from his 25-year career. The collection includes live performances of tracks including “Elegy For The Arctic” and “Four Dimensions” from Steve Jobs’ Theater, a rarely heard vocal version of his most popular composition “Nuvole Bianche” and the “Main Theme” from The Third Murder, which was previously only released in Japan.

Ludovico Einaudi - Einaudi: Four Dimensions (Live From The Steve Jobs Theatre / 2019)

Ludovico Einaudi explained, “For me, it was nice to look back, brush up my memories, being surprised and somehow rediscover myself, and compose a new necklace made of stones of my past.”

Ludovico Einaudi’s Einaudi Undiscovered is out now and can be bought here .

Over his three decade career, Italy’s Ludovico Einaudi has become one of the world’s most celebrated and well regarded pianists and composers. From his award-winning scores of Luce dei miei occhi and Sotto falso nome putting him in an enviable category alongside fellow Italian composers like Morricone, to his debut in the Western cinematic world with This Is England  and a slew of his own material, including the 2013 release  In a Time Lapse , Einaudi has been nothing short of prolific. Briefly in Australia last year for GRAPHIC festival, Einaudi will be returning to Australia this week for his first tour of the country. Though it was brief – just three days – his memories of the first trip down under are a positive one, “It was my first time to Australia and it was very nice for me to come. Everything was very condensed, but your country was very welcoming and nice. I have very beautiful memories of the concert and the audience at the Sydney Opera House”.

As for what we can expect for this run of shows, Einaudi commented on his joy at bringing his current tour to Australia, “I’m very happy to come back, even if this time it’s going to be more days but at opposite ends of the country, so it’ll be very short in each city! About a day and a half and then onto the next. The performance will be with seven musicians around the pianos, cello, violin, percussion and electronics. I will be playing music from In a Time Lapse , my latest record and my previous repertoire.”

“The group (of seven musicians) works well together, because last year we played 120 concerts. So we know eah other very well. It’s very nice to play with this group for me because we can experiment every night, little changes and explore it and change it here and there. And so everyone that comes to these concerts is experiencing this connection on stage, and that’s very nice for them and for me.”

Einaudi is a man who has never seemed to stop making music since his first releases in the mid-1980s, so I asked him what inspires him to keep making new music, what challenges him along the way, and how he feels his latest record compares to his previous works.

“Of course every record is for me, it’s a different episode of my creativity and it’s like I try always to achieve something different and explore something different. So if you compare this record ( In a Time Lapse ) to the previous one, the sound is is quite different. I think sometimes it can be a risk to change things and try new things and to fulfill new ideas… but of course I do not like the idea of keeping working on one sound.”

“There are probably parts that are unique to my style, but I try to find unique parts, new sounds, new experiences… I look at the power of the emotions – we have strong emotions from very basic things around us. The experience of the rain can be very powerful, as can the experience of the wind. I think you can think about the experience of those elements and hear those elements inside the music.”

This led me to the ineviable question of technology, and how the developments in digital music and editing software has influenced the way we writes his music. Though he uses computers for his compositions, he goes on to reinforce the importance of the pencil:

“Well of course I use much more with the computer and I experiment with sound through it. And even the form of the music, working with the computer it’s a different technique of composition because you can now experiment with things before you record it. You can experiment around the pieces and experiment different forms. The nice thing with a computer you can make a sort of global idea of the perception of the music before you record it. It’s not exactly the same perception as to when you perform the music with other musicians, but you can get an idea of the form of the music, and this can give you a sort of a starting point. I enjoy very much the process of working between the piano, my pencil, the computer. The pencil is important it’s very nice also to work with the details of the music … act of making changes, erasing, it’s a very beautiful connection you have…”

And as for his work on screen, I ask him what makes him choose one project over another, as he has one of the most diverse collections of film and television compositions in the industry – everything from J. Edgar and I’m Still Here to the Ricky Gervais series Derek , Stargate: Universe and the highly acclaimed French film Intouchables .

“Sometimes it’s the story, sometimes it’s the relationship you establish with the director. It’s a combination of things that makes me choose one project over another. I’m glad I don’t do this too much, I find this much more exhausting to compose for film than to work for myself and for my concerts, because there’s always a relationship with the production team that never stops. You have to get the details really right…”

And for a man who never stops working, what comes next, after his Australian tour? “I will have a bit more time for composing, I have a new project for a french film coming the Spring. And I have another project between a concert and an installation I’m doing on Edgar Allan Poe in Italy in the Summer. And then there’ll be some concerts again. I’m also happy to think about more projects for the next year and focus on some new idea for my next record. It’s a very big year.”

Don’t miss Ludovico Einaudi in his first Australian tour, kicking off tomorrow at Perth Festival, ahead of Sunday night, February 9th at the Sydney Opera House, the 11th at Adelaide’s Festival Theatre and 13th at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. ludovico einaudi tour italy

The most streamed classical artist of all time, Ludovico Einaudi returns to the Kennedy Center fresh from his recent triumphs composing the scores to acclaimed films The Father and six-time Oscar-winner Nomadland . Witness the famed pianist LIVE performing works from Underwater , his first new solo album in 20 years. Born in lockdown, Underwater displays the virtuoso’s unmistakable sound in its purest and most intimate form: just Einaudi and his piano.

Underwater features 12 transcendent solo piano tracks, beautifully showcasing Einaudi’s luminous, emotive, effortlessly lyrical, and supremely refined sound. This new album embraces the simple purity of songwriting, each note touched with an innocent, delicate beauty.

On the making of Underwater during the pandemic, Einaudi explains: “The music came naturally, more than ever before. I felt a sense of freedom to abandon myself and let the music flow differently. I didn’t have a filter between me and what came out of the piano; it felt very pure. The title Underwater is a metaphor—it is an expression of a very fluid dimension, without interference from outside.”

Underwater follows an exciting year for Einaudi, which saw the release of the soundtracks to Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe-winning films Nomadland and The Father (which include tracks from his immensely popular 2019 release Seven Days Walking ), compilation album Cinema , showcasing Einaudi’s composition achievements in film and TV, and new podcast mini-series Experience: The Ludovico Einaudi Story , which features celebrated filmmakers including multiple award-winning actor and director Russel Crowe ( Gladiator ), Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao ( Nomadland ), Academy Award winner Florian Zeller ( The Father ), Shane Meadows ( This is England ) and Eric Toledano ( The Intouchables ).

Einaudi is one of the most ubiquitous contemporary composers of the century, repeatedly topping the classical charts globally, and becoming the biggest streamed classical artist of all time. Einaudi transcends generations and, in addition to his chart and streaming accolades, enjoys more than 1 million YouTube subscribers, 10 million views, and 150 thousand pieces of content on TikTok.
