Hotel stripes .
Small hotels are what you’ll find the most authentic experience in Chow Kit but one of our most memorable hotel stays is at the Hotel Stripes.

The bedroom was super comfortable with the warm lighting and a decent view of the city. But the highlight of the hotel is the infinity pool. You don’t have to love swimming to appreciate the pleasant poolside ambiance which is complimented with a view of the iconic KL tower.
A day rate starts at about RM288/night which is super worth it considering the amount of facilities you get to enjoy. Click here to read the full review of Hotel Stripes.

A Traveller's Guide To Chow Kit Market, Kuala Lumpur
As cities develop, the new and modern replace the old and decrepit. Traditional markets in Malaysia and other parts of Asia are disappearing at the expense of high-rise blocks and shopping complexes. Chow Kit Market is one of very few that have survived the test of time in Malaysia’s capital.
Chow kit market.
Chow Kit holds many titles, with some more favourable than others. Named after the former tin miner and public figure, Loke Chow Kit, and sandwiched between the two parallel roads of Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit Market thrives. Inside a residential area with large Malay and Indonesian communities, the market has provided a lifeline for local families for decades.
Chow Kit Market is Malaysia’s largest wet market. Seemingly hundreds of stalls filled with meat, fresh fruit and freshly caught fish line the narrow passageway. As Kuala Lumpur saw rapid development over the last 20 years or so, the market has survived the test of time. But only by the skin of its teeth. A few years ago, Chow Kit Market was fortunate to avoid demolition to make way for yet another one of the multi-storey’s so prevalent in Kuala Lumpur today.
The infamous
But Chow Kit Market has an infamous side too. Towards the other side, away from the market and vendors lies a labyrinth of small side streets. This seedy area is Kuala Lumpur’s unofficial red light district. Locals warn about the dangers of walking around after dark due to the number of drug addicts, prostitution and gangsters.

Where is Chow Kit Market?
Located on the northern end of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, approximately 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) from KLCC and Petronas Towers , Chow Kit Market is accessible within 30 minutes from most hotels and attractions. The Monorail passing through KLCC and KL Sentral goes to Chow Kit. From the station, the market is just a few hundred metres down the road. Or, outside of rush hour, Uber and Grab can get passengers here within no time at all for a few ringgits. Chow Kit Market opens at 6:00am until 5:00pm; most people spend approximately one hour.
Shopping at Chow Kit Market
Chow Kit Market divides into two sections: the wet and dry market. The wet market, known locally as Bazaar Baru Chow Kit, bursts with local families and restaurant owners from early in the morning to buy their fresh produce. Walk through the stalls and see everything from hanging meat carcasses to fish spending their last minutes in a pail of water next to the stall. The market isn’t for the faint-hearted. Vendors butcher their meat in their stalls, and the smell can be overwhelming. But at the same time, endless varieties of tropical fruit from the red spiky rambutan to pineapples, longans and bananas fill the stalls at rock bottom prices. The dry market, at the other end, features a more tourist-friendly setting selling clothes, shoes, DVDs and textiles among many others.
Practical information
Tourists sometimes feel overwhelmed when they explore Chow Kit Market. From the overpowering smells, pushy vendors, crowdedness, noise and less than hygienic conditions, this personifies the true spirit of an Asian marketplace. But embrace the environment and glimpse into the real way of life for many locals. Those who persevere and walk through the bustling market will find the freshest fruit and several opportunities for that photograph that captures the very soul of Kuala Lumpur.

Chow Kit: Local Street Markets Galore
2023 Travel Update: As of 2023, Malaysia essentially is open for tourism by both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers without Covid-specific documentation or testing. However, be sure to double check the official government site and travel alerts for up-to-the minute details.
Chow Kit — named after Loke Chow Kit, a 19th century Chinese merchant who owned a variety of businesses in the area including everything from a well-known department store to gambling joints and opium dens — remains the present day home of a cluster of local pasars . These markets include the interconnected Chow Kit Pasar and Chow Kit Bazaar Baru , commonly considered to be the largest local market in the city.
Unlike Jalan Petaling and Kasturi Walk — which are patronised almost exclusively by tourists — the markets in Chow Kit very much are intended for a local audience with vendors hawking everything from cheap clothes, costume jewelry, and mobile accessories to fruit, veggies, spices, and heaps upon heaps of meat and fish.
Chow Kit did show up in the top 75 or so attractions on the big tourist advisory sites at the time that travelgasm.com first wrote this piece — and there have long been a smattering of basic hostels and guesthouses in the area — but the vast majority of tourists never make it to the neighbourhood. It's not for everyone, but if you want to see Kuala Lumpur beyond the glitz and glam of the shopping malls in Bukit Bintang and KLCC , Chow Kit is a good first step toward leaving the tourist trail. Accordingly, we think Chow Kit is a worthy addition to our 7 Things Tourists Don't Do in Kuala Lumpur, but You Should .
Stay Safe in Chow Kit
Chow Kit has a well-deserved reputation for being a rough area. Fifteen years or so ago, some reportedly considered it even too dangerous for the police to patrol regularly. Back streets can remain the turf of organised crime and much of the area still is considered an unofficial red light district often staffed by transvestite prostitutes ( maknyah ), but following more recent efforts both by the police and the community itself to reduce street crime and drug use, the district is not as bad as it once was. These days, the main street — Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman — shows little evidence of the unseemly.
Nevertheless, now is a good time to remind you that travelgasm.com, and the author thereof, are not legally responsible for you in any way in Chow Kit or elsewhere — and you always should be vigilant about your safety and not wear or carry expensive items — but if you visit Chow Kit in the morning and stick to the main streets and the markets, the risk of pickpockets or other trouble striking an observant visitor likely only is modestly higher than Bukit Bintang . Pickpockets go to work in Bukit Bintang; Chow Kit very well could be where they sleep.
Shop & Eat in Chow Kit
Cheap local shopping in the Chow Kit Pasar and Chow Kit Bazaar Baru markets are the primary appeal of the district. However, there are no shortage of eateries, as well.
To eat in Chow Kit, there is a small food court toward the north side of the Chow Kit Bazaar Baru where we enjoyed simple Penang-style char koay teow (noodles) on one visit. Three locally well-regarded places near main streets that you also might enjoy for lunch or a snack include Mohd Yaseen for Indian Muslim food, Kin Kin for chilli pan mee (noodles), and Sin Hwa Bee for traditional Chinese pastries and cookies.
Below, we've mapped out the best walk from the Chow Kit Monorail station to the local markets.
How to Get Here: Take KL Monorail (Line 8, Light Green) to Chow Kit (MR10). To follow our suggested walk, take the West Exit (toward Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman; opposite side of the street from the markets) and head down the passage to the left. Instead of dealing with the unpleasant intersection under the monorail station, this route makes it easy to c ross Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman via a people-only overpass in about a block.
