GM’s Super Cruise getting fully automatic, hands-free lane changes and more for 2022

Over-the-air feature updates for 2021 models are coming, too.

General Motors’ Super Cruise, one of the best advanced driver assist systems on the market, is getting a big upgrade for 2022 and will be available on way more vehicles — including, for the first time, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra half-ton pickup trucks.

To test out the new stuff, GMC had me out to GM’s Milford Proving Grounds to play with the new Super Cruise on the facility’s 4.5-mile banked circle track. Security at the facility is tight and our cameras were either confiscated or, in the case of my iPhone, covered in obnoxious red security tape.

I soon understood the need for security when I spotted what appeared to be the upcoming 2023 Z06 mid-engined Corvette being tested, a whole bunch of GMC Hummer EV pickups and, curiously, a Tesla Model Y. (GMC wouldn’t say why, but I assume it was to check out the competition.)

Available for the first time in the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks

There are three main new capabilities to the 2022 variant of Super Cruise, and I got to test two of them:

  • Fully automatic lane changes , meaning the car can determine when it’s safe to pass a slower car in front of you and execute all lane changes without involving the driver at all.
  • Support for towing , allowing for hands-free trailering (but you can’t tow and have automatic lane changes, it’s one or the other).
  • Upgrades to the navigation, to show Super Cruise-enabled roads on the in-vehicle navigation system during route selection.

I took the Sierra out onto the facility’s “highway” and a GM engineer followed in a chase car. After setting Super Cruise to 70mph, I settled in for a nice hands-free drive in a large circle.

Super Cruise, which debuted in 2017 in the Cadillac CT6 sedan , is capable of completely hands-free driving across more than 200,000 miles of divided highway across North America. It compares the vehicle’s position, taken from both GPS and on-board cameras, to its location in a lidar scan of the world. Once the vehicle knows where it is, and that it’s safe to activate, Super Cruise will take over both steering and acceleration.

The driver is still required to pay full attention

The driver is still required to pay full attention. The car uses an infrared vision system to ensure that the driver’s eyes remain on the road. Look away at your smartphone for too long and the system starts with warnings before disengaging entirely. But if you keep your eyes on the road, you won’t need to touch the steering wheel at all unless there’s a situation the system can’t handle.

And with the updates, you’ll be able to touch the wheel even less. After I pulled onto the highway and set my speed, the chase car sped past, moved into my lane, and then slowed down to less than 70mph. My Sierra noticed this and slowed down to match, but then it began scanning the left-hand passing lane to see if it was safe to move over.

After a moment, the car beeped at me and popped up a message warning of the impending lane change and the vehicle swiftly moved to the left lane while simultaneously accelerating back up to my 70mph set speed. It wasn’t a dramatic move, but it was impressive to watch it in action. After passing the slower car, it moved back into the right lane and continued on.

The truck has four new wide-angle, long-range radar sensors to support the system, one on each corner of the vehicle. GM upgraded the two existing rear / side radars that were there to enable existing blind-spot monitoring features. The existing long-range radar for the adaptive cruise system is carried over. Between the seven different radar sensors, the car has 360-degree long-range coverage of the world around it.

Between the seven different radar sensors, the car has 360-degree long-range coverage of the world around it

2021 Cadillac Escalade models have an older version of the lane change system where the car would change lanes if the driver activated the turn signal (though it didn’t require any interaction with the steering wheel), but this is a significant improvement on that. Just keep an eye on the road, and the car should be able to move around slower cars and trucks in your way.

The new trailering option is more complicated than it might appear at first glance. When you attach a trailer for the first time, the truck asks a series of questions like how long the trailer is. This helps the truck calculate the total length and weight of the vehicle.

While in a normal curve, Super Cruise will stay closer to the inside lane line, which is how most humans drive. With the trailer attached, Super Cruise will instead work to keep the vehicle and trailer dead center in the lane. It’ll also leave more space between you and a vehicle in front (since the truck and trailer will take longer to slow down).

All versions of Super Cruise use mapping data to determine if it should slow down for an upcoming curve. But it will be more conservative with a trailer attached, slowing down sooner and to a lower speed than without.

A Sierra can haul 10,000 pounds without breaking a sweat, and that’s a significant amount of weight to entrust to the computer, but GMC’s engineers say it really works. In my 15-minute demo, I’m inclined to agree with them — though it was the definition of a controlled environment.

“democratization of technology”

Company reps wouldn’t specify pricing nor what trim levels on which Super Cruise will be available. Phil Brook, GMC’s VP of marketing, said the addition of Super Cruise to Sierra was a “democratization of technology” and that they didn’t want to keep it buried at exclusively high trim levels. We’ll see about that, but expect Super Cruise to be an expensive option either way.

GM says the new Super Cruise will be available on a number of different vehicles, including the upcoming GMC Hummer electric pickup, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups, the Cadillac Escalade and XT6 SUVs, and the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans. The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV will receive an older version of Super Cruise that doesn’t include the lane change features. Owners of 2021 Escalade vehicles with Super Cruise equipped will also receive the new features in a future over-the-air update.

Of course, this was a contrived test on GM’s own test track. But, given the performance of Super Cruise in our own real-world testing and the company’s conservative, take-it-slow approach to rolling out the feature across its lineup, we expect the new features to work as advertised.

None too soon, either. Arch rival Ford is planning to unleash its own hands-free Level 2 driving system, BlueCruise, later this year starting in 2021 versions of the Ford F-150 pickup and the Mustang Mach-E electric car.

And, of course, there’s Tesla’s Autopilot and the new beta version of its Full Self Driving features which also support automatic lane changes on the highway. However, the Tesla system requires the driver to keep their hands on the steering wheel to confirm that they’re paying attention instead of the completely hands-free driving that the camera-based driver monitoring systems from Ford and GM allow.

Though both Super Cruise and Autopilot have been around for a while, they haven’t been available in any pickup trucks — by far the most popular vehicles in America. The addition of Super Cruise to the Silverado and Sierra, and BlueCruise to the F-150, will bring these technologies (which might be old hat to Tesla owners) to an entirely new market of flyover truck buyers.

GM expands Super Cruise tech for use on 400K miles of roadways

chevrolet super cruise availability

Customers driving General Motors Co.'s vehicles with the Super Cruise hands-free driving technology soon will have access to double the amount of miles where they can use the technology, GM said Wednesday.

The Detroit automaker is expanding Super Cruise availability from 200,000 miles to 400,000 miles of roadways in the U.S. and Canada, included undivided highways. The technology was previously only offered on mapped divided highways or interstates. A few known routes with large sections coming online in the expansion include: U.S. Route 66, California State Route 1,  U.S. Route 1 and the Trans-Canada Highway.

Super Cruise is available as an option on new vehicles built on the VIP electrical architecture.

The expansion will be available later this year on previously sold model year 2021 and 2022 vehicles with that architecture. It will be offered at no additional charge over-the-air on Super Cruise-equipped models, which have included the Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade, GMC Hummer EV and electric Cadillac Lyriq. It will also be available on some new 2023 model year vehicles.

GM still intends to have Super Cruise on 22 models sold in the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2023, but the chip shortage has affected its ability to offer Super Cruise on some of the equipped vehicles.

"We continue to work through the chip shortage," said Mario Maiorana, Super Cruise chief engineer. "We continue to balance the usage across our products ... the customer has the option of buying with or without Super Cruise but yes, there are challenges there that we continue to manage."

Pricing for the Super Cruise option varies by brand. For Cadillacs, the technology is priced at $2,500. It's available on: 2021-2023 Escalade, 2023 Escalade-V, select 2021-2023 CT4, CT4-V, CT5 and CT5-V, 2022-2023 XT6 and the 2023 Lyriq.

Super Cruise is also offered on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country, 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Premier and Redline trim levels only for $2,200.

The self-driving technology is also offered on the the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali and comes standard on the 2022 Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate. The cost is included in content packages, GM said.

Super Cruise uses precision LiDAR map data, real-time cameras, radars and GPS for the hands-free driving experience. The system will accelerate and brake, it steers to maintain lane position, and on certain models, can perform lane changes.

GM's expansion of the automated driving system comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has expanded a probe into Tesla Inc. for its Autopilot driver-assistance technology after several crashes.

"We're always working with NHTSA. We talked to them about these types of expansions," Maiorana said. "We talked to them about our strategy with respect to driver attention, so we're having regular conversation with them. We'd like to have an open relationship there and discuss these types of significant changes."

GM's Super Cruise monitors drivers closely to make sure they can grab the wheel when necessary. The driver attention system is "very key" to safety, Maiorana said.

"We believe that is the linchpin of safety for our system in that we are ensuring the driver is always attentive and aware because there's situations that can be thrown at you at any point in time," he said.

Sam Abuelsamid, principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights, sees Super Cruise as "the best system on the market today out of everything I've tried so far. It does a better job of keeping the vehicle steady in the center of the lane."

And the Super Cruise driver monitoring system is "more capable and robust." But he's not totally convinced that hands-free driving systems are a good idea because drivers can still get "complacent and not pay enough attention," he said.

"GM does a pretty good job of that with the driver monitoring system. But when you have to continue watching the road ... I'm not convinced that it's actually more relaxing."

Review: Super Cruising in a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado

C hevrolet has given its Silverado lineup a broad range of powertrains, trim levels, and cab configurations to capture a huge swath of the pickup truck market. The Silverado’s current generation , first launched in 2019, continues to adapt and improve. We recently nabbed a highly optioned 1500 High Country to see how its newest tech stacks up.

The Silverado 1500 remains a very comfortable place to spend your time, with a roomy cabin for both rows of seats and a pleasant ride that shakes off poor pavement surfaces and isolates the driver and passengers from both road and wind noise. Even when equipped with the optional 22-inch wheels as our tester included, the ride quality was top-notch.

Since we’ve driven plenty of the current-generation Silverado in various trims , one of our top priorities was to experience Super Cruise hands-free driving. Our test drive coincided with a recent expansion of Super Cruise availability, as the compatibility now includes 750,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada. Major freeways and highways were among the first to roll out, but the expansion now also includes smaller connecting highways.

We tried Super Cruise on some of Southern California’s biggest freeways as well as some of its smaller, windier ones. To use Super Cruise, the driver must first engage adaptive cruise control. That makes perfect sense, especially if you consider adaptive cruise control as the next step in driver assistance above standard cruise control, and then Super Cruise as its progression. If the vehicle is on a compatible highway, pressing the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel will start the system and inform the driver to keep their eyes on the road. A camera mounted on the steering column keeps tabs on the driver to ensure they’re paying attention. We drove during the day, at night, and in the rain, and Super Cruise was only stymied on a few occasions. One such example was a curving portion of a small, two-lane highway when we couldn’t engage Super Cruise even though the road appeared to be part of the system’s network. Instead, we were told that our speed, which was keeping up with the flow of traffic, was too great. Okay, we may have been over the speed limit, fair enough. Once we dropped our speed a bit, Super Cruise took the wheel.

Specs: 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country

  • Price: $68,095/$78,110 (Base/as tested)
  • Powertrain: 6.2-liter V-8, 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Output: 420 hp, 460 lb-ft of torque
  • Layout: Four-wheel-drive, four-door, five-passenger full-size pickup truck
  • Curb Weight: est. 5100 lb
  • EPA Fuel Economy: 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, 17 mpg combined
  • Competitors: Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Nissan Titan, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra

We have to admit, we’re still getting used to the concept of hands-free driving. With just a few hours of experience, the process is a bit disconcerting. On straight sections, the vehicle’s course corrections match what you’d expect from a human driver. On curves, however, the minute steering corrections seem odd. The constant small adjustments happen about twice a second. Although these adjustments don’t look smooth, they don’t transmit to the occupants, either. It’s just that watching the adjustments of the wheel, you can almost picture a computer anxiously muttering to itself as it makes its way through a curve.

The one downside to Super Cruise is that it is very conservative. Of course, that’s how you’d hope it operates. However, when surrounded by other drivers who are assertive or even aggressive with their passing, Super Cruise’s automatic lane-change function can meet its match.

For example, when approaching a driver in the number two lane who is going under the speed limit when there’s no good reason to do so, Super Cruise will match that vehicle’s speed at a safe distance. Now two vehicles are driving slower than the flow of traffic, and everyone driving with the flow of traffic will make moves to get around them both. Despite the Silverado’s 420-hp V-8 and a responsive 10-speed transmission, Super Cruise will wait, left turn-signal blinking, looking for a large opening in traffic before initiating a lane change. The maneuver is aborted if anything fills whatever void that Super Cruise deems large enough to be safe for a lane change. All of this information is relayed via the driver information center dead ahead in the dash, so it’s not a surprise.

After a few of these aborted passes, however, we took over for Super Cruise, stomped on the gas, and easily made the pass. If we hadn’t intervened, normal traffic would have kept passing and Super Cruise would have been happy to follow at a safe distance behind the 55-mph rolling chicane. That said, it’s exactly how you’d hope a driver-assist system would function. Any driver-assist function naturally requires some sort of trust, and Super Cruise helps build that trust by being conservative and communicating with the driver.

With the speed, following distance, and course corrections handled by Super Cruise, the driver can focus on surrounding vehicles, upcoming traffic, and road hazards. For our short trips, Super Cruise remained a novelty. On longer trips, the ability to relax your shoulders, sit back, and delegate the monotonous course corrections to Super Cruise could help reduce fatigue and improve alertness.

Whether you trust an advanced driver-assistance system in your vehicle is up to you, but that could change over time. If GM’s Super Cruise , Ford’s Blue Cruise , and the like continue to improve with oversight that helps steer things along a safe course , perhaps many of those who resist the technology will be won over. We were once skeptical of adaptive cruise control, just as there once were those who scoffed at plain old cruise control when it was introduced.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country

Highs:  The Silverado remains roomy, comfortable, and powerful. Super Cruise expansion brings impressive coverage and an intuitive interface.

Lows:  Luxurious High Country trim still plays second fiddle to its GMC Sierra Denali cousin.

Takeaway:  The Silverado continues to impress, but with the pickup market stretching even more upscale, there’s probably room in the lineup to bring the High Country some flashier interior colors and luxury amenities. Super Cruise could help it win some customers.

2023 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Are the Latest GM Models to Offer Super Cruise

Chevrolet plans to offer its hands-free driving tech on its big SUVs for 2023, but with the chip shortage, will it actually be able to do so?

the 2023 suburban high country front three quarter view parked

  • Chevy plans to add Super Cruise to its 2023 Tahoe and Suburban.
  • The tech is limited to high-end Premier and High Country trims.
  • The semiconductor shortage, however, may ultimately affect Chevy's plans.

"Due to current supply-chain shortages, certain features—including Super Cruise—have limited and late availability," a spokesperson wrote in an email to Car and Driver . When asked if Chevrolet may ultimately need to push Super Cruise's debut in the Tahoe and Suburban to the 2024 model year , the same spokesperson replied that Chevy is "continuing to monitor chip availability and will make this determination when our business deems appropriate in the model year cycle."

2023 chevrolet tahoe and suburban super cruise

We wager Chevy feels pretty confident it can get the needed semiconductor chips to bring Super Cruise to these two full-size SUVs for the 2023 model year. Otherwise, the bowtie brand would have surely pushed back announcing this information until it had a firmer grasp on its semiconductor chip situation.

Nevertheless, it’s entirely possible Chevy released this information under the guise of "hoping for the best but planning for the worst." If the worst does happen, and Chevy pulls Super Cruise from the options sheets of the 2023 Tahoe and Suburban, then buyers of these big SUVs will find the brand making only a handful of very small changes for the new model year. Three new exterior hues (Silver Sage Metallic, Sterling Gray Metallic, and Radiant Red Tintcoat) are added to the two vehicles' color palettes, while a new accessory grill, which forgoes the bowtie badge for the Chevrolet name, is available on LS, LT, RST, and Premier trims.

That said, if Chevy succeeds at bringing Super Cruise to the 2023 Tahoe and Suburban, then consumers of these models ought to plan on spending big bucks for the Level 2 driving-assist system, as it’s limited to the SUVs' pricey Premier and High Country trims.

2025 Buick Enclave revealed with new looks, technology

It's now available with super cruise.

chevrolet super cruise availability

The 2025 Buick Enclave has been revealed, and as expected it combines Buick's current corporate styling with the new-generation three-row SUV platform shared with the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia . It also gets plenty of standard features and technology, along with the first Buick implementation of Super Cruise .

The design of the Enclave is much more boxy and upright than the extra-curvy model that precedes it. Even the wheel arches have been squared-up. It's coupled with the shark-nose front fascia taken from the Wildcat concept that has adorned every other vehicle in Buick's lineup. The whole thing is slightly larger than before, too, though Buick didn't specify by how much. And as is the case with most Buicks, there's a base Preferred model, as well as Sport Touring (ST) and Avenir trims that receive appearance tweaks in addition to different feature sets. The ST adopts black trim, including in the grille, whereas the Avenir uses bright metal trim and body color wheel arches, plus larger 22-inch wheels (Preferred and ST have 20-inch wheels).

chevrolet super cruise availability

The interior is the biggest upgrade by far, though. Immediately obvious is the standard 30-inch combination instrument and infotainment display. It has a curvy, inverted trapezoid shape that has a slight retro-futurism vibe. It sits atop a low, wide and gently curved dashboard, one with a small set of physical short-cut buttons above the center air vents. A "floating" center console rises to meet the dash, though stops short of connecting to it. Adjustable ambient lighting is standard in here, along with power, heated seats, wireless device charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 12-speaker Bose sound system. Avenir upgrades the sound system to 16 speakers, adds a panoramic sunroof, front seat ventilation and massage function, rear seat heating and a head-up display.

Mechanically, the Enclave is basically the same as the Traverse and Acadia . It uses the new platform and also gets the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder as the sole engine option. In the Enclave, it makes 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, the same as the GMC , and a tad more than the Chevy . An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission offering, though both front- and all-wheel drive are available. Towing capacity is again mirrored at 5,000 pounds, and Super Cruise is available, making Enclave the first Buick with the hands-free driving assist system. Buick also boasts about the Enclave coming standard with automatic emergency braking with intersection support, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, plus lane-keep assist as standard. The Avenir features adaptive shocks for enhanced ride and handling, too.

Pricing hasn't been announced for the Enclave, yet. But that should come soon, as the SUV will be available later this summer.
