Credibility Check

On the USTOA (U.S. Tour Operators Association) and Travelstride site, Perillo gets 4.8 out of 5 . Perillo is not BBB accredited but earns an A+ rating from the organization.

Tour Destinations

Perillo is best known as an Italy specialist, with tours that range from nine to 15 days all across Italy. The company also offers a limited number of itineraries to Greece and Spain. And for 30 years, Perillo has also been hosting guided tours to Hawaii.

Perillo’s group Italy tours focus on either a geographical region or a theme. So for instance, you could opt for a tour that focuses exclusively on Rome and the Amalfi Coast, or Sicily and Italy’s South; or you could choose a themed tour like Renaissance and let the topic take you to cities (like Florence) that were important during the period. Some tours are more food-focused (for instance, Green Heart of Italy) but all Perillo tours are focused on good food experiences.

COMFORT AND STYLE: How to Choose the Best Walking Shoes for Travel

Perillo’s Greece tour itineraries are more limited in number, but most offer a mix of land and sea excursions. The company currently offers just one Spain tour, a 13-day trip that covers much of the country. Perillo’s Hawaii tours focus on multi-island excursions that give travelers an easy way to experience the different islands of Hawaii on one itinerary. Hawaii tours range from about nine to 13 days.

Tour Guides

Perillo uses both tour directors and local guides, and both must pass a rigorous series of written and oral exams before becoming Perillo tour guides. According to Perillo: “This is a very difficult process, with approximately only one in 10 applicants passing the examinations.” And All Perillo guides are trained in the “Perillo style of ‘over-the-top’ guest service.”

Excursions/Extras

Perillo tour prices include hotels, sightseeing with expert guides, transfers, baggage handling, daily breakfast, select scheduled meals, tips, taxes, and complimentary WiFi on all Perillo coach buses. While Perillo does offer competitive airfare, it’s not included in the base price of the tour.

READY FOR ADVENTURES: Best Tour Companies for Older Travelers

There are often additional optional activities offered at (a fair and modest) extra cost during tour free time. Examples of such extras include a gondola serenade in Venice, the Illuminated Rome at Night experience, a Lake Como boat cruise, and a visit to Villa D’Este in Tivoli.

Typical Travelers

The majority of Perillo Tours’ guests fall in the 59-77 age range, and most are from the United States. Perillo Tours are popular with couples, but about 13% of tour travelers are solo travelers.

SOLO BUT NOT ALONE: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Fit for the gods

From the coasts of the Mediterranean to the top of Mount Olympus, Greece is a place grand enough for mythical gods and friendly enough for travelers alike. Uncover its ancient ruins and relics and take in an iconic landscape of whitewashed homes. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil.

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

diana

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

Perillo Tours, which specializes in escorted travel to Italy, is expanding its 2023 portfolio with a new 11-day tour program to Greece.

“We’ve been looking for a new Mediterranean destination to offer our thousands of loyal, Italy tour alumni guests,” said Steve Perillo, owner of Perillo Tours. “Greece has so much to experience from the history to the food, to the beaches, making it the perfect complement to our Italy product.”

The new 11-day Deluxe Greece tour features three nights in Athens, three nights in Mykonos, and three nights in Santorini. Tour highlights include walking tours, a sunset catamaran cruise, visits to ancient ruins and markets, and more. The itinerary also features free time for self-exploration, immersion and relaxing at the beach.

A three-night Crete extension is also available with hotel, daily sightseeing with a private guide, daily breakfasts and transfers included.

Perillo Tours Heads into 2024 with Fresh Outlook

A new COO at Perillo Tours , Keith Baron, is helping CEO Steve Perillo shake things up a bit at the venerable tour operator company. As Perillo tells Recommend , the family wanted to bring in “someone from the outside; first time in its 80-year history. We wanted to bring a fresh breeze into the company.”

That said, 2023 is going to be the best year in a long time for Perillo Tours, with 2024 looking even more robust, so bringing Baron into the fold is more about allowing for new ideas and new perspectives.

Baron notes that one of the things that attracted him to the company it its ties to Italy. “Everybody wants to go to Italy,” Baron says. “And demand for Italy, like nowhere else, stays strong, right? The opportunity that I see with the company is just exceptional.” He adds, too, that they’re anticipating “really exceptional revenues and profits for this year and next.”

Baron himself brings a hefty resume to Perillo Tours, having worked in senior leadership roles at some of the top tour operators within the industry. Says Baron, “Steve came to me and said, look, you’ve got this background and this history leading big brands, very successful companies, and so we had some chats and I was very receptive because I believe in Perillo Tours. This is a company that has had a legacy of exceptional delivery in-country [Italy] for decades.

“Steve asked me to come on board and effectively lead the long-term growth strategy for the organization. So, we’re excited to do that. We’ve had very good conversations and we’ve been building plans. To be fair, it’s only been about a month, but we are very aligned and we both feel quite good about the potential for the future.”

Perillo Building for Continued Growth in 2024 & Beyond

Perillo Tours, notes both Baron and Perillo, is a company “that delivers, on a very consistent basis, very high-quality products that our guests are very, very happy about. And we do that while delivering exceptional value. That’s very appealing.”

“These are very high-quality products delivered with incredible value,” notes Baron. “And the intent isn’t to move away from that. What we want to do is we want to build upon what we’ve done already. And that is effectively beyond Italy, growing Europe and the Europe portfolio.”

That said, it’s important to note that Italy is Perillo Tours’ “bread and butter,” serving as the largest continuous operation in Italy of any U.S. tour operator. “We’ve taken over a million people to Italy since 1945,” adds Perillo.

So, the executives want to make sure they enable the continuity of the operator’s stronghold in Italy and look at ways to leverage what they already do and already know through a process of continuous innovation. “We’re going to adopt this mindset of continuous innovation,” says Baron. “What I mean by that is saying, let’s look at the things that we deliver and let’s make them as good as they can possibly be while we innovate on a very regular planned basis. We don’t know in advance what we’re going to innovate, of course. But, on at least a very annual basis, we’re going to be innovating every product that exists.”

That means, he adds, bringing new things in and finding things that are pretty challenging for individuals to do on their own. “We’re going to be delivering things that our competitors are not able to do. We’re going to have innovation every year no matter what. Even if it’s the smallest thing.

“We don’t want to be in a place where we’re pulling things off of a DMC shelf somewhere. We are going to be creators and innovators, and that is what we’re going to do in Italy.

“And not just in Italy. We’ll do it beyond Italy, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet in the conversation,” Baron says.

Perillo Tours’ second European tour focus will be Greece, where they already offer itineraries, with Perillo noting that “Keith thinks that the model for Italy and Greece—we’re in Spain also and that’s growing—can be applied to other European destinations.” That said, they didn’t mention which European countries they’d be focusing on beyond those three, with more news expected to come out in 2024.

“What we need to do,” says Baron, “is deliver consistent experiences. Even if what you do, and what you eat, and what you see might be different. It’s the way we deliver it—the choreography of the experience.

“Avoiding the crowds, so you go at this time instead of the [usual] time]. All of that, which is built in, must be consistent, because that’s what our guests expect.”

Additionally, Baron says that the tour operator is looking at a faith-based portfolio, with hopes of launching it in early 2024.

The Growth of the FIT Product Perillo Tours was founded on group tours, but as Baron notes, “there’s this whole segment of the community, the world, the country, that prefers independent travel. And travel advisors service a lot of FITs. Who better to deliver that than Perillo Tours, who are experts in delivering Italy. And if you can do it for 40 people, you can certainly do it for four people, right?”

He stresses that it’s about delivering these trips in a very bespoke way. And when it comes to being able to deliver that, Baron says the “biggest challenge is inventory. What we have in terms of inventory, though, is that we hold many, many, many hundreds of relationships. So, while we all want our preferred hotel, or our preferred option, preferred location, we have a series of backups that are generally available. What I can tell you is, at least to this point, we’re not turning people away. We find solutions to those challenges, but by and large, if guests are still coming to us for 2024, we’re able to fill their interest.”

Baron adds, too, that they will be educating travel advisors on Perillo Tours’ FIT component as well as new product coming out in 2024, but how that will happen is still in the planning stages. Possibilities include going out in person and through digital channels. “Effectively, we’re going to build a ‘Love the Travel Advisor’ model,” says Baron.

What’s New in Italy Perillo Tours is introducing three new guided Italy tours next year; each of the new tours, ranging from nine to 12 days, highlights a different region. The 11-day Green Heart of Italy , running April to October, explores the region of Umbria, while the 9-day Renaissance Tour 2024 , available March through October, visits Rome, Florence and Chianti’s picturesque hillsides and medieval towns. The 12-day Best of Southern Italy , running through March to October, takes travelers to the regions of Campania and Puglia.

In 2024, Perillo Tours will offer 10 itineraries to Italy ranging from 15 days exploring Rome, Sorrento, Florence, Venice, and Milan, to nine days in Rome and the Amalfi Coast.

Perillo Expands Its Reach to Greece

perillo tours 2024 greece

Perillo Tours, long associated with Italy, expanded to Greece in 2023 – with plans to add more programs to the destination next year, said Steve Perillo, the company’s third-generation owner. Italy, however, will remain the core of the operator’s programs as it adds three new escorted itineraries to that country for 2024.

The company is having its best year in 2023, Perillo said, selling out its programs in Italy, Greece and Spain. He attributed the success partly to pent-up demand but also to the goodwill generated during the pandemic by the way the operator treated its customers during that crisis – offering refunds to all affected clients. In fact, tours are selling even faster this year than at this point in 2022, and satisfying demand is mostly a question of keeping up with supply, he said.

Greece Debut

The debut for the Greece program was an 11-day “Deluxe Greece” itinerary highlighting Athens, Mykonos and Santorini, and including walking tours, a catamaran cruise, and visits to ancient ruins, a market, winery, medieval village and more, as well as extensive free time.

In 2024, the operator will add a second Greece itinerary under the “Classical Greece” banner, Perillo said. It will include visits to places like Delphi and Olympia, as well as a three-night Aegean cruise.

Italy Tours for 2024

All told, Perillo will offer 10 itineraries in Italy next year. In addition to Italy and Greece, the company will continue its programs to Spain and Hawaii as part of a gradual expansion. All of these programs, Perillo said, reflect the fact that the company has been moving into a slightly higherlevel market and also offering more small group options than in the past. Still, he said, the operator has managed to keep its prices accessible in the face of rising costs.

Even with the geographic expansion, Perillo said that what has always set the company apart – and still does – is the genuinely personal approach to clients. “I know every person who’s traveling – not many CEOs can say that.”

Selling Perillo Tours

While there is much talk of changing attitudes toward group travel, Perillo believes there will always be a market for traditional escorted tours.

As travelers age, he said, they realize they don’t want to lug their bags around and worry about the logistics. “Our trips are foolproof,” he said, “and that’s a big deal.”

Each itinerary includes hotels, sightseeing with expert guides, transfers, baggage handling, daily breakfast, select scheduled meals, tips, taxes, free time for self-discovery and complimentary Wi-Fi on all Perillo motorcoahes.

New Italy Itineraries

In addition to its already-robust Italy offerings, Perillo is adding three new tours in 2024, which range from nine to 12 days and highlight different regions, showcase art, history, food and culture, and offer more off-the-beaten path towns and villages.

  • 11-day “Green Heart of Italy” – The tour features Umbria and includes visits to Rome, Spoleto, Assisi, Gubbio, a cruise on Lake Trasimeno and the Tuscan countryside. It includes visits to wine and oil producers, a truffle hunting excursion and a cooking class.
  • Nine-day “Renaissance Tour 2024” – The itinerary includes Rome, Florence, the hillsides and medieval towns of Chianti with oil and wine tastings, truffle hunting and more.
  • 12-day “Best of Southern Italy” – The tour’s focus is on Campania and Puglia, with visits to Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Matera (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Bari, Lecce and Alberobello, and such activities as pasta making and a focaccia tasting.

Please remember to post your photos & activities on Facebook so your friends can follow along.

FRIDAY : Upon arrival, your tour director will be waiting to greet you. We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from the airport to your hotel (it’s a short 10-mile ride from the airport to the hotel).

Madrid welcomes you with its friendly atmosphere. You’ll have some free time to settle in and relax before a panoramic sightseeing tour of Madrid.

You’ll see Retiro Park, Alcala Gate, Serrano´s street, Columbus Square. For those of you who love to shop, you’ll be happy to know that your hotel is situated in the heart of the downtown shopping district.

Tonight, we enjoy dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

SATURDAY : This morning we’ll visit the world-famous Prado Museum. We’ll get to see the masterpieces of Velasquez, Goya, El Grco, El Bosco, Murillo, Rubens and many more. Next, we’ll visit the ancient Austrian quarter and the famous Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s grand central square.

Next we will visit the magnificent Royal Palace (Palacio Real) made up of over 3000 rooms, one of the most beautiful Palaces in Europe. It ends with a red carpet leading to the King’s actual throne!

Enjoy the remainder of the day and evening on your own. Be sure to ask your tour leader for some restaurant suggestions.

SUNDAY : This morning we travel south to Andalucia, and will visit the ancient city of Toledo – the historical, cultural and religious heart of Spain. Due to the influence of its Islamic, Hebrew and Christian occupants, Toledo is known as the city of 3 cultures. We visit the Church of Santo Tome to see the famous El Greco painting “El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz.”.

Next, we visit the Synagogue as well as a factory creating Damascenes – intricate inlaid metallic artwork. A perfect souvenir to bring home! By now we’ll have worked up an appetite – we’ll enjoy a traditional Spanish lunch in a fine Toledo restaurant.

After lunch, we’ll make our way To Cordoba, we arrive to our beautiful boutique Hotel and have dinner in our hotel with fine Spanish wines.

MONDAY : We will visit Cordoba, one of the most beautiful and ancient cities of Andalucia. Every corner of this city is adorned with sweet smelling orange blossoms.

No monument is more iconic of Spain’s changing culture than the Mezquita, a former mosque that was transformed into a Catholic cathedral, which then resulted in Moorish and Gothic architecture all in one building.

Afterwards, we’ll stroll over to the Juderias Quarter (Jewish Quarter) with its beautiful cobblestone alleys filled with shops, tabernas and music.

Remainder of the Day at your own. Remember to ask your tour guide for Tapas suggestions.

TUESDAY : Today we’ll learn how to make the world famous “Paella” and then we’ll get to taste-test our own cooking.

Next, we motor to the amazing city of Granada, home of the world famous, and massive, Alhambra!  Tonight, we enjoy a relaxing dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

WEDNESDAY : Today we discover the marvels of the Alhambra, a summer palace built by the Moorish Kings. The Alhambra will remain etched in your memory forever!

Also included is a visit to the Royal Chapel, as well as a visit to the famous San Nicolas Mirador, to enjoy spectacular sunset views of the Alhambra.

Tonight, we thought you would like to enjoy dinner on your own. Be sure to ask your tour leader for restaurant suggestions!

THURSDAY : An action-packed day! We will visit Jerez de la Frontera, well known for its wines, horses, and flamenco. We’ve reserved the best seats for you at the Royal Equestrian School “dressage” horse show.

Next, get ready for Bodegas Tradición—a winery producing world-class Sherry. Be careful—it’s strong!

Lucky for us, the vintner has his own, personal fine-art gallery filled with million-dollar Spanish masterpieces—including Picasso’s childhood art. After a light lunch, we drive to Seville, the capital city of the Andalucia Region.

Tonight, we enjoy dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

FRIDAY : After breakfast, we discover the marvelous city of Seville. We start by viewing Cartuja Island where Christopher Columbus lived while planning his voyage to “India”.

We’ll see Columbus’ ornate tomb inside the Seville Cathedral with its gothic Giralda Bell Tower. You’ll also see the statue of King Ferdinand who defeated the last Islamic rulers in Spain - also in 1492.

To this day, Spaniards argue over the more important figure in their history – Columbus or King Ferdinand? You’ll have to decide for yourself! Via the old Jewish District, we’ll visit the vast Plaza de España built for the Ibero-American Exposition in 1929.

We end our tour with an old-fashioned, 30-minute horse and buggy ride through the center of Seville!

Tonight we will attend an authentic "Flamenco Show" in a real Andalusian "Patio".  Dinner and wines will be served during the show. But be careful not to drink too much – you don’t want to end up being part of the show!

SATURDAY : Today, we will spend the afternoon at the Basilippo Olive Oil farm. Spain's olive oil is among the world's best, often referred to as “liquid gold”.

After a light lunch in the olive oil farm, we’re off to the airport for our quick flight to Barcelona. Upon arrival, we’ll go directly to our hotel to enjoy dinner and relaxation.

SUNDAY : It’s time for us to discover the fascinating seaside city of Barcelona.

We’ll visit the Columbus Monument, Plaza Cataluna and the historic buildings along Paseo de Grazia. Then we’ll have the opportunity to see the most visited bullring in Spain, and, Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece, the almost psychedelic Church of the Sagrada Familia.

Our day ends with a visit to the Basilica Santa Maria del Mar in the Gothic Quarter. Tonight, we’ll enjoy our final dinner together in a fine local restaurant with our new travel friends.

Don’t forget to exchange email addresses and make travel plans for the future. How about you all meet again on another Perillo Tour – to Italy or Hawaii!

MONDAY : Today we enjoy more of Gaudi’s amazing work. We visit his Casa Mila’, originally a private mansion, it resembles an undulating pastry made of concrete.

Next, we visit Gaudi’s colorful Park Güell, similar to “Main Street” in Disneyland but created 50 years earlier. We’ll end our visit atop Montjuic Mountain, with the best panoramic views of the city and harbor.

Tonight, you’ll enjoy your final evening on your own. Be sure to visit some last-minute shops for souvenirs!

TUESDAY : Today, we fly home full of happy memories and pictures to show our friends and family. For now, a warm hasta luego!
